22 Dec 2023The Devil's Advocate (aka Accent Roulette) with Heath Corson02:01:44
Come for the absolute masterpiece of scene chewing that is Al Pacino as The Devil, stay out of the morbid curiosity of hearing what accent is going to come out of Keanu's mouth next. His accent grows no moss, because it's a rolling stone. Don't try to pin him to any one place or syntax.
Hey, guys, did you remember that Charlize Theron is in this movie. They don't give her a ton to work with, but she's playing Florida girl for wall she's worth! There so much going on and yet, somehow, not enough. See a man learn to run while on camera. Regret paint choices that aren't even yours. Learn about the evil titties of lawyers' wives. Downright demonic nips.

16 Jul 2021Freaky (aka Our Real Kinks Were The Friends We Made Along The Way) with Terra Acevedo & Mila Valecillo02:10:54

Fear Level: Spoopy (not scary)
Trigger Warnings: Gore, brutal assault, mild racism, homophobic slurs (all by bad people), Vince Vaughn, body swapping.

Body swapping movies always feel a bit squiggy going in, especially when you look at them through the lens of trans and non-binary folks. That's why we had two guests this week as we all gushed over the amazing way this body swapping slasher starring a man not known for his ability to be funny and mindful of the LGBTQIA+ community. It's a modern day miracle, but this movie actually does a really amazing job of handling trans issues and even goes out of its way to get the pronouns right!

    • Director: Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Paranormal Activity -Marked ones, Disturbia, Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse) outspoken gay filmmaker
    • Writers: Michael Kennedy, Christopher Landon

  • Homecoming: do people care?
  • Why wouldn't you have the homecoming game on a Friday?
  • Things a teen girl likes or things a 30 something gay man likes?

  • Woodshop? In this economy?
  • Az-teck-i-an

18 Dec 2020Mayhem (aka Office Space Game of Death) with Allie Mullin01:41:54

Fright Level: Spoopy with a side of existential dread about capitalism
Trigger Warnings:
Pandemic, disease, blood and gore, mild workplace sexism, a disability slur, horrible workplace, mild nudity

Let's establish something real quick: there are two opposing types of action movies:

-A "Die Hard": Work your way down through a building to rescue hostages / escape

-A "Game of Death": Work your way up through a building, taking out level bosses on the way, to reach a final boss at the top.

Now that we have that out of the way, you have everything you need to understand what I mean when I say that "Mayhem" is an Office Space Game of Death, in which you have to work your way through your evil coworkers to reach and fight the evil CEO of your company. Sound fun? Well, then it's time you met Mayhem!

Directed by Joe Lynch, Mayhem is a blood splattered, nail shooting, mug smashing good time. It may not have anything even remotely not straight to offer you, but what's less straight than fighting for the downfall of late stage capitalism, right? Maybe that's a stretch, but this movie is jam packed with class conversation and features an effortlessly diverse cast including Steven Yuen and Samara Weaving, who are cutting a bloody swath through an office under quarantine for a disease that causes you to lose all inhibitions.

Meanwhile, Joel McHale is entering his creepy dad phase and we are deeply disturbed by it. I mean, he's good at it, but boy is it hard to watch.

29 Dec 2023Constantine (aka The Angel of Gender) w/ Jay Joseph Jr.01:50:41

We've been talking about this movie since we started the podcast and now we finally did it!

Unfortunately, this film's John Constantine is from LA. Mercifully, that means Keanu doesn't have to do a British accent. Not that he can't do it. I mean, forsooth, we all remember Bram Stoker's Dracula, do we not? Instead, this time we leave it to Rachel Weisz to do an accent which basically just equates to "Americans talk low and mumble, right?". Hey, did she teach Benedict Cumberbatch? That's definitely a Greenwich Village accent, right?

But just like The Prophecy, nothing that happens in this movie really matters until Gabriel and Satan show up! Tilda Swinton's Gabriel is The Angel of Gender and Stormare's Satan is really just having the time of his life for the whole five minutes he's in the movie. This is how you become THE DEVIL.

Oh and for some reason Shia LeBeouf is here. Why? Unclear. Ask again later.

12 Apr 2024Underworld (AKA The Spirit of Nu Metal) w/ Phoenix Davis01:37:33

Which kind of horror creature are you? Are you the wet shirtless sewer dwelling kind or the or the dry in lingerie kind?

Underworld is a movie that will have you asking how it can be so full of ideas that seem good on paper and still somehow make something so boring. Guns that shoot bullets full of daylight? A sexy vampire assassin played by Kate Beckinsale? A  centuries old blood feud between sexy vampires and sexy werewolves? A secret history? An evil mentor? Werewolf Michael Sheen vs Vampire Bill Nighy? It seems impossible to screw up... and yet!

You do have to admire a movie about vampires and werewolves that constantly tells you that everything you know about vampires, werewolves, and even the details they just told you about the plot up until now is actually wrong!

We're finally talking about Underworld and you don't want to miss it!

11 Dec 2020After Midnight (aka The Sweet Sad Song of Florida Man) with Karley Richard01:54:37

Fright Level: Spoopy (mostly not scary)
Trigger Warnings:
Violence toward animals, gaslighting, jump scares, moderate alcoholism, Florida

We brought in an additional psychologist for a second opinion as Karley Richard joins the podcast to talk about "After Midnight." After Midnight is a 2019 movie written by, directed by, and starring Jeremy Gardner and co-starring Brea Grant, Henry Zebrowski, and Justin Benson. It's about life love and monsters that are either aliens, your shape shifting girlfriend, or your radioactive housecat in Northern Florida.

Hank's girlfriend has disappeared and since then every night a giant clawed creature has been trying to get into his house. It's a movie about relationships and also about scary monsters. It's about gaslighting asshole brother-in-law cops and also about sweet redneck friends that will grab a hatchet and come help you hunt your monster. It's about overcoming traditional masculinity and drinking gorilla farts. Come join us as we swirl, sniff, sip, and savor the rare horror romance of After Midnight.

16 Jun 2021Sarah Swire (Steph North) and Alan McDonald (Writer) Talk "Anna and the Apocalypse" - Pride Rebroadcast01:48:31

OH MY GOD! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!

Actually I can tell you how it happened! We recorded a podcast about Anna and the Apocalypse and since we talked about our favorite tiny queer girl, Steph North, a whole bunch I tagged actress Sarah Swire in the tweet about the episode and then both she and Alan McDonald, the writer of Anna and the Apocalypse got in touch to say thanks for the shout outs in the episode and then Jeremy was like "Hey would you guys want to come on and talk about Anna and the Apocalypse and they both said yes and we had to do it at a weird time of day because Alan is in Scotland so Chris couldn't make it but she was there in spirit.

Topics of conversation are far ranging but include:
-Not burying your gays
-Singing
-Dancing
-Choreographing
-The many times of year during which different drafts of this movie were set
-Creating honest queerness in your characters
-Female protagonists not being your prize for hanging around long enough
-Sliding Doors alternate universe where this movie never happens
-Why directors should always want writers on their set
-Overcoming traditional masculinity at the end of the world
-Sarah's voice and how it's very good
-Ben Wiggins, the man who makes a mockery out of the concept of sexuality

14 Jun 2021Anna and the Apocalypse - Pride Rebroadcast02:38:39

Fright Level: Spoopy (not scary) with mild jump scares and moderate existential dread
Trigger Warnings: zombies, gore, pandemics, high school, musicals, Christmas

Anna and the Apocalypse is a 2017 horror/comedy/musical from Scotland that combines our love of musicals set in high schools and zombie horror comedies set in England. It's directed by John McPhail and it stars Ella Hunt, Malcolm Cumming, Christopher Leveaux, Marli Siu, Mark Benton, Paul Kaye, and the podcast's new girlfriend Sarah Swire and new boyfriend Ben Wiggins.

This movie has us co-sleeping in ballpits, fantasizing about power throuples, and examining the effects of toxic masculinity on how we deal with apocalypses and friendships. We also talk extensively about Sarah Swire's portrayal of Steph North and how rare it is to have a non-sexualized queer woman with social anxiety, a warm winter wardrobe, and a hatchback in a horror movie, despite the fact that that describes a quarter of our friend group. We are Soldiers at War for this movie and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now.

04 Feb 2022Blacula (aka Give Skillet a Cape) with Aaron Amos, Shawn Pryor, Alicia Whitley01:44:25

Scare Level: Spoopy
Trigger Warnings: Homophobia, racism, bury your gays, several homophobic slurs, the n-word (though used entirely by people in the community), blood and gore, potential gaslighting or hypnotism (unclear), one racist ass Dracula

It's time to talk about the original black horror movie about the man himself, Mamuwalde aka Blacula! An African Prince appeals to Count Dracula to stop the slave trade and Dracula rewards him by attempting enslave his wife, turning into a vampire, and locking him in a coffin for a few hundred years. And that's all in the first five minutes!

  • The Basics
    • Director: William Crain
    • Writers: Joan Torres, Raymond Koenig
    • Stars: William Marshall, Vonetta McGee, Denise Nicholas
  • What’s it about?
    • IMDB says: An ancient African prince, turned into a vampire by Dracula himself, finds himself in modern Los Angeles.
    • This month we’re focusing on horror films with black directors and as far as it goes, this is the classic. William Crain was directing this movie when there weren’t many black directors making movies and certainly not ones that look like this. What’s everybody’s history with this movie?

06 Nov 2020Anna and the Apocalypse (aka Sing it, Ben Wiggins!)02:36:55

17 Sep 2021Drag Me to Hell (aka The Roasting of the Pork Queen) with Matt Wilson02:22:28

Fear Level: Spooky
Trigger Warnings: body horror, anti-Roma racism, jump scares, animal death

A tour of exoticism, anti-Roma racism, early 2000's real estate / banking, and some real big Sam Raimi vibes. We try to puzzle out where exactly the Raimis are falling all of this? This is one movie where the tone and the message clash so hard, we don't actually know how the movie feels about anything.

  • Director: Sam Raimi
  • Writers: Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi
  • Stars: Alison Lohman, Justin Long. Lorna Raver, David Paymer, Adriana Barazza, Reggie Lee, Dileep Rao

21 Jan 2022You're Next (aka Piss on your Levis) with Kat Calamia01:42:55

Fear Level: Spooky
Trigger Warnings:

Welcome to the watch along guide for Progressively Horrified Episode 67. Here’s some things you might want to know before you watch the movie or listen to the episode.

This week we are discussing the  2011 home invasion thriller “You’re Next”
It is directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett.

Our hosts ranked this movie as spooky, meaning it has some legitimately scary moments, but is not among the scariest movies we’ve watched.
Some relevant trigger warnings for this movie include: family mental and emotional abuse, gaslighting, fatphobia, intense body trauma, gore, flashing lights, nudity, and violence against women.

After the music, we will talk about the movie in full, so expect spoilers.

And while you’re here, if you can, stop by our patreon at ProgressivelyHorrified.patreon.com. You’ll get extra episodes, all episodes a week early, and most importantly you’ll get to help us keep the lights on. We’d greatly appreciate it.

Topics of Discussion:

  • Horrible families

05 Jul 2024Good Manners (AKA Werewolf Moses) w/ Sara Century01:38:12
Let my people AWOOOOOO!
Time to talk about the Brazilian werewolves and lesbians! Good Neighbors is a fantastic film about falling in love with the absolute disaster pregnant bisexual woman who hires you to take care of her unborn supernatural child. Who hasn't been there?
The movie truly answers the question "How do we make pregnancy even more scary and fucked up?" and it turns out the answer is werewolves! Didn't see that one coming, did you?
Alicia had to cut a bunch of jokes, presumably because this one was just too funny and some people listen to this while driving and we don't want to be responsible for any traffic accidents.
Okay, but what if a podcast about horror movies started killing people? CALL ME HOLLYWOOD!

27 Nov 2020The Cabin in the Woods (aka hit em with the dumb-ass gas) with TJ02:56:36

Fright Level: Spoopy
Trigger Warnings: Extensive gaslighting, violence toward women, extensive gore, disturbing images, Joss Whedon.

It's the first episode of this podcast we've ever done to necessitate and upfront creator based content warning as we talk about the meta horror of "The Cabin in the Woods" and having grown up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly in a post Justice League world.

Despite our Whedonesque misgivings, we're still very much here for Drew Goddard and a just pre-fame Chris Hemsworth. There's a lot of speculation about how many times a person has to write or underwrite the same type of character before it MEANS something. We dig into the small but important difference between being clever and being self-aware as the movie identifies a number of important tropes and then...continues them. Witness the worst final girl ever to continue to be alive. Laugh along with us as we fall in love with the incredibly comic booky idea of "dumb-ass gas". Gasp with us as we unravel the mysteries of Chekov's dirt bike! Head to your basement and summon up the monster or your choice to enjoy this one with. We summoned TJ!

  • Stars: Andrew Robinson (Garak!), Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence

Hellraiser is a horror classic and with good reason. The special effects are incredible, the monsters are memorable, and for some reason half of the cast had their voices dubbed over. Okay, we're not as keep on that last one, but Hellraiser is revered at large and especially in the LGBTQIA+ community. But why? Oh, we have such sights to show you.

Topics of Discussion:
-This movie doesn't know its monster's name yet.
-Makeup you can't talk or move in.
-Clive Barker's home run the first time at the plate
-Industrial music, Aphex Twin, and other things Emily could give a Ted Talk on
-The queer lens of Clive Barker
-Frank - hot, disgusting, or both - discuss!
-A simple tailor
-What a woman will go through to get some goo dick
-Hammer time!
-Penises with teeth and stingers
-The final girl rubix cube.

05 May 2023The Invitation (aka The Absolute Worst Vibes)00:44:15
We open up AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Island) Heritage month by talking about our girl Karyn Kusama and The Invitation.
You know how sometimes you have a tragic divorce and your ex runs off and joins a cult for six months with her new husband? And then when they do come back they want to tell you all about the joy of death show you videos about euthanasia? And you know how your new black girlfriend thinks all of this is perfectly normal and is very cool with being shut up in a scary LA villa with a bunch of death obsessed cultists and never raises the slightest objection to any of this and acts like you're crazy for thinking it's at all strange? And then you find out your friend that supposedly has been running late left you a message saying they actually showed up early and you're pretty sure he's dead?
Has this ever happened to you?

15 Jan 2021The Craft (aka The One with TMI) with Allie Mullin and Alicia Whitley02:19:05

Fear Level: Spoopy (not scary) w/mild hatred of who you used to be
Trigger Warnings: Snakes, bugs, rats, suicide, suicidal ideation, abuse, sexual assault, mind control

  • Directors: Andrew Fleming
  • Writers: Peter Filardi, Andrew Fleming
  • Stars: Rachel True, Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Breckin Meyer, Christine Taylor

If you grew up in the nineties, at any point had an all black wardrobe, and ever had a friend who warned you about particular herbs because they could be used to put a love spell on you (hi Jennifer) then the odds are pretty good at some point you were very well acquainted with the 1996 film "The Craft".
It's about four high school girls who are very into magic, very bad at wearing their catholic school uniforms to regulation, and each have one very specific life problem that they decide to change with the practical application of magic. Of course, in any nineties movie, girls strive to get some kind of power and control in their lives and when they get it they go immediately insane and begin killing people and turning on each other (sigh). We all remember this movie (except Ben, who is a literal infant) but just how well do we remember it? Is it the "Whedonesque" girl power phenomenon that some people remember or is it "Whedonesque" in all the wrong ways? Jump in and let's find out!

Points of Interest:
Which element are you?
What's your favorite 90's fashion accessory?
This soundtrack
Jewel
The many thunderstorms of Los Angeles
90's Suicidal ideation and the "right way to commit suicide"
Unrealistically barren magic shops
Don't steal from local witches
We find out a lot about each other (everybody was a witch, except Jeremy who was a football player. TWIST!)
WHY IS EVERYBODY IN LOVE WITH CHRIS HOOKER?! HE'S THE WORST!
Large chunks of this plot don't make sense.
So many snakes
Did The Craft change the ecosystem of Los Angeles?
This movie hates people experiencing homelessness and victims of abuse.
Please invite Rachel True to your convention you racist trash people

25 Dec 2020Black Christmas (aka Just a Regular Herring) with Bob Reyer02:02:24

Fright Level: Spooky with intense amount of existential dread
Trigger Warnings:
Intense depictions of and lengthy discussion of sexual violence and rape. Violence. Mild gore. Jump scares. Home Invasion. Stalking. Cyber Stalking. Christmas.

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Friday!
We got you a Christmas and/or Friday present! We did a very merry episode of the podcast with our very own Santa Claus, Talking Comics' Bob Reyer! Bob brought us some figgy pudding and we talked about the 2019 film "Black Christmas" directed by Sophia Takal and starring Imogen Poots and an army of amazing young female actors. Fair warning, this movie is extensively about misogyny, sexual assault, rape, and the way all of those things intersect with college. Just be cautious going in, we don't want to ruin anybody's Christmas or Friday.

Topics of conversation for this one include:
-Cary Elwes and how he can sell us anything, fixing leaky busts
-How funny the word bust is (to Ben) and how Emily just won't stop saying it.
-Bob brings the knowledge of all the other movies that are also called Black Christmas (I didn't check to see if he knew about Black Friday, but I'm guessing he does).
-Honestly, who steals a diva cup?
-Actual toxic masculinity
-Mean Girls (again).
-Why it's uncool to hang out at your friend's work and talk about their sexual assault.
-Archery
-Alternate uses for dry cleaning bags
-One overly aggressive analogy about what it's like to be Jewish on Christmas

19 Feb 2021Bad Hair (aka A Period Piece) with Bre Indigo, Lando Toothman, and Alicia Whitley02:10:01

Fear Level: Mostly Spoopy with existential dread
Trigger Warnings:  Racism, colorism, trauma, body horror, sexual assault, violence, blood

  • Director: Justin Simien
  • Writers: Justin Simien
  • Stars: Elle Lorraine, Judith Scott, Vanessa William s, Jay Pharoah, James Van Der Beek, Lena Waithe, Kelly Rowland, Usher, Blair Underwood, Michelle Hurd, MC Lyte, Robin Thede, Laverne Cox, Nicole Byer

"Bad Hair" is a politically and socially relevant drama, filled with the real life challenges that black women faced and continue to face in the workplace and in their daily lives. It's a thoughtful consideration of the pressure to conform to traditional Eurocentric beauty standards even in creative fields and the damned if you do, damned if you don't nature of what we as a society demand of black women. It highlights the way in which Anna, a young black woman working in television is overlooked, mistreated and betrayed.

Psych! Actually it's a campy horror movie about a woman that decides to get a weave that turns out to suck blood, physically violates her, and murders her friends. It's "Little Shop of Horrors" if Seymour wore Audrey II around on his head and Audrey II occasionally stuck its plant tentacles down his pants and into his bodily orifices.

Psych! Actually it's both of those movies and we had just as much trouble trying to figure out what it was saying as that description implies. Come be completely stumped with us!

Topics of Discussion:
-Hair drama
-Hair trauma
-Bad Hair/Good Hair/Bad Hair
-If you want to have a magical negro, but your movie is full of black people, do you just have a magical trans woman?
-The late 80's career minded black issues drama that Ben was here for.
-The 80's camp horror movie about killer hair Bre was here for.
-The blood oath that forced Lando to be here.
-Welcome to our podcast about black hair. No, really, this episode contains a lot of discussion about black hair by black women and non-binary folks.
-Jeremy does his best not to talk about his hair. It just makes everyone mad.
-Horror movies and fantasy movies have to have rules.
-Elle Lorraine acts good
-Who cast Blair Underwood as Laurence Fishburne in this movie?
-Witches: who are they and what do they want?
-Can you make a movie about racism and colorist affecting black people and still completely exoticize Native Americans?
-This movie sure tried.
-James Van Der Beak - down or clueless?

You wanna make an omelet, you gotta murder a few men.

  • IMDB says: 'Everybody knows if you're fixin' to GOSSIP, you gotta have a little dirt on somebody. And everybody knows if you're fixin' to BURY, you gotta throw a little dirt on somebody. But don't everybody know that if you're fixin' to CONJURE, it's best to take a little dirt from a body...' So begins this Southern Gothic tale of 'root-work', self-righteousness and comeuppance.

  • Directors: Zoe Lister-Jones
  • Writers: Zoe Lister-Jones, Peter Filardi
  • Stars: Cailee Spaeny, Zoey Luna, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, David Duchovny, Michelle Monaghan

Did you ever meet somebody who seemed really great and begin what felt like it was going to be a deep and fulfilling relationship and then it turned out that they never made good on any of their promises?

Nevermind, I don't know why I brought that up.

The Craft: Legacy is the sequel/reboot/remake of the classic The Craft for 2020 that has so much going for it. The young actresses are all great. One of the main characters is trans and is played by a young trans actress. David Duchovny is here to handle the creeping you out so that none of our girls have to go mad with power and pull a Dark Phoenix.

So why doesn't it work? Well...there are a few reasons but you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out for sure.

Topics of Discussion:
-Princess Nokia
-Mysterious self-cleaning jeans
-Shadows
-Dangling plot threads
-Meaningful representation
-Daddy Duchovny
-The Red Flag Factory
-Dickensian orphans

27 Oct 2023Evil Dead Rise (aka Chekov's Cheese Grater) w/ Lan, Adam, and Brent01:35:59
Break out your antique evil vinyl collection and wake up your EDM DJ nephew, it's time to party Evil Dead Rise style! Come witness what is either the mostly wonderfully gruesome continuation of the Evil Dead legacy or the world's strangest most indirect anti-abortion argument! Maybe it's both! We haven't really figured that out yet. But really, honestly, if you average saving one out of every three of your niblings, you'll almost probably definitely be a good mom. Don't worry about it!
So grab yourself a nice wine glass to eat, grab your best doll head on a broken mop handle friend, and settle in for a night with the evil dead! We promise you'll be fed by dawn!
