22 Feb 2022Birth Story: Spilling the Milk with Caitlin00:47:16

Send us a text

Today, we have a remarkable birth story from one of our amazing mums inside the FitNest Mama membership. Caitlin is the mother of a little boy Hunter, a business owner ‘To Living the Abundant Way’, and has her own podcast ‘Belly and Beyond’.

Caitlin shares her incredible birth story. Hunter was born with a birth defect, a cleft lip and palate. She talks candidly about her feelings when the doctors took him away after birth, his time in NICU, and her worries surrounding how other people would treat him. He has had two plastic surgeries before he was even 1 year old. There will be more surgeries, speech therapy, a potential palate break, and braces in the future and Caitlin shares her feelings for the path ahead.

Caitlin openly describes her struggles with breastfeeding, calling in support, needing a chiropractor, empowering yourself through knowledge, and how FitNest Mama has helped her in her postnatal journey.

I’m so grateful to have Caitlin on the show today and could have listened to her for hours!

08 Feb 202230 Day Pelvic Floor Challenge00:16:19

Send us a text

It’s so easy to forget our pelvic floor muscles, they’re out of sight and out of mind. Often, we don’t start placing an emphasis on them until we begin to experience problems with our pelvic health.

In this episode, I’m chatting about an upcoming 30 day pelvic floor challenge that I would love for you to join me in. Inside FitNest Mama starting the 1st week of March for the whole month, a daily email will be sent out with daily pelvic floor exercises. They’ll get harder as the month progresses to challenge you and will include a variety of different positions.

I’ll run you through a set of exercises in the episode to show you what you can expect. The challenge will help safeguard you against future pelvic floor issues, such as urine leaking, faeces leaking, flatulence, and pelvic organ prolapse.

22 Mar 2022Safe Pregnancy Exercises for all trimesters00:17:51

Send us a text

Pregnancy and postpartum is an incredibly special time in a woman's life. Your body is adapting and growing something beautiful and it requires special consideration to support your changing body during this season.

We all know the benefits of exercise but even when we know what we ‘should’ do, it can be a real challenge to exercise during pregnancy when you have less time, energy and focus to take care of yourself.

In this episode, I dive into the guidelines around exercise during pregnancy and offer my realistic take on how to support your body during all three trimesters.

It’s so important to take care of yourself inside and out so don’t worry too much about reaching a certain standard. Do what’s right for your body and modify exercises where you need to.

There are certainly more barriers to exercise during pregnancy but you can still do it in a way that helps you feel rejuvenated and not depleted.

03 May 202210 Reasons to include postnatal rehab in your after birth plan00:17:15

Send us a text

Why do we need postnatal rehab?

When we think of rehab, we often think of rehab after a sports injury, or perhaps an addiction.

If a pro footballer has a knee injury, they may have surgery.

And then it’s a given they will have a period of rehab before getting back on the footy field.  This includes rest, recovery, and then a graduated return to exercise.

Whereas women might have a 6 week doctors check, and then no guidance whatsoever to helping her body recover from what has been one of the biggest events a body could go through.

Postnatal rehab is something that all women need, after giving birth, to some degree or other.

Everyone’s postnatal rehab journey will be different.  Each woman is unique and has her own set of challenges and goals.  And every woman deserves to one day feel like a confident and strong mama.

What is postnatal rehab?
Why do I need postnatal rehab after I've had a baby?
How can I take care of myself after giving birth?
How long does it take to heal after giving birth?
What is the Postpartum recovery timeline?

These are all questions we will cover in today's episode.

31 May 2022When should I start doing pelvic floor exercises in pregnancy?00:20:11

Send us a text

I am super excited to chat to you about this common question today: When should I start doing pelvic floor exercises in pregnancy?

It is a question a lot of women DM me on Instagram @fitnestmama to ask.

It is a topic we discuss a lot inside the FitNest Mama Membership, as around 50% of the women who join FitNest Mama are concerned about their pelvic floor, or want to make sure they are doing everything they can to help during this stage of motherhood.

So we are going to discuss 4 main things.

WHAT are pelvic floor muscles?

WHY are pelvic floor exercises so important during pregnancy?

WHEN can I start doing pelvic floor exercises in pregnancy?

HOW do I do pelvic floor exercises?

We also dive into these common questions:

  • When should you start doing pelvic exercises in pregnancy?
  • Are pelvic floor exercises safe during early pregnancy?
  • How often should you do pelvic floor exercises when pregnant?
  • Is it too late to do pelvic floor exercises in pregnancy?

And, we also have a super exciting announcement about a new pelvic #fridayfloor series on the FitNest Mama Podcast!

16 Jun 2022Pelvic Floor Friday #3 [Quick lift pro]00:08:13

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Pelvic Floor Friday session!

Every week on a Friday, I talk you through a set of pelvic floor exercises.

These episodes are short, these episodes are actionable, and are designed to just help you get it done and tick off your pelvic floor from the to-do list.

Perfect if you’re having a vaginal or a caesarean birth, pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy, or years and years down the track.

You could even send this podcast episode to your mum, as pelvic floor exercises are something I believe ALL women need to do.

So, today, we are diving into a set focussing mostly on our quick lifts.

These are my favourite of the pelvic floor exercises, and I much prefer them to the longer holds (which I will take you through very soon as well I promise).

As I say every week - Everyone is different.

Focus on Quality over quantity.

And If you can’t hold for as long as I say, don’t.

Any discomfort or questions please do stop and consult your healthcare provider.

REPEAT X 3

15 quick lifts

10 second strength hold

21 Jun 2022How to relax tight pelvic floor muscles?00:16:56

Send us a text

In today's podcast episode I answer the question 'How do I relax my tight pelvic floor muscles?'

Like all muscles, we need them to function properly.  If our muscles around our head/neck and shoulders are tight or overactive, we might be predisposed to head aches or neck pain.

Similarly, sometimes we want our pelvic floor muscles to be strong and activated, and at other times we need them to relax and release the tension in the muscles.

When do we need to relax our pelvic floor muscles?

  • Pelvic floor muscles may be weak
  • Or, pelvic floor muscles might be overactive
  • Tight / overactive pelvic floor muscles might predispose us to issues with constipation / sexual pain / difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel, or perhaps coccyx pain or back pain.
  • Sometimes our emotions, stress levels / feelings impact our overall body muscle tension, eg if you're feeling anxious or stressed.
  • Sometimes there is no known cause / reason.

Why do we need to relax our pelvic floor muscles?

It is important to relax for all of the above reasons (plus more).
Preparation for childbirth is also an important time to become aware of our pelvic floor muscles, and pelvic floor relaxation can work really well when combined with perineal massage.

*Please be sure to touch base with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns around your pelvic floor muscles.

How can we relax our pelvic floor muscles?

Some things to think of:

  • Diaghragmatic breathing
  • Visualisation - ripples
  • Body relaxation
  • Body scanning
  • Tummy relaxation
  • Relaxed environment
  • Opening bowels, and letting it gooooo.

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Pelvic Floor Friday session!

Every week on a Friday, I talk you through a set of pelvic floor exercises.  Then, our normal podcast episodes will be released every Tuesday.

These episodes are short, these episodes are actionable, and are designed to just help you get it done and tick off your pelvic floor from the to-do list.

You could even send this podcast episode to your mum, as pelvic floor exercises are something I believe ALL women need to do.

So, today, we are focussing on a ‘standard’, or ‘traditional’ set of pelvic floor exercises.

These are perhaps what you’d consider gold standard.

But if you’ve been listening to me for awhile you will know I always say how everyone is on their own journey,

Everyone is different.

Focus on Quality over quantity.

And If you can’t hold for as long as I say, please don’t.

And, don’t forget these exercises don’t substitute for a pelvic floor assessment by your local pelvic floor physio, they are designed to help with motivation, and support, to just help you to get them done more consistently.

Enjoy!

15 Jul 2022Pelvic Floor Friday #7 [Quality Lift]00:09:03

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Pelvic Floor Friday session!

Today, we are focussing on a quality pelvic floor lift.  I am going to talk you through a few ways of imagining your pelvic floor, we are going to do a lovely lift together, and then focus on that full relaxation and release.

So, although I am talking you through this pelvic floor set, if you’ve been listening to me for awhile you will know I always say how everyone is on their own journey,

Everyone is different.

Focus on quality over quantity.

And if you can’t hold for as long as I say, please don’t.

Any discomfort or questions please do stop and consult your healthcare provider.

Right, let’s dive in.

Find a position where you can relax.

1. Focus on draw string bag. Close off the bag, then lift it up off the ground.

2. Clock face. Bring the 4 points on the clock together in the middle.

3. Relaxation: focus on full release.  Imagine a bud is blooming.  Dropping and flopping. Avoiding straining down, instead release and let all the muscle tension drop away.

Postnatal depletion:

  • What is  postnatal depletion?
  • Why is it so important to know about postnatal depletion?
  • How do I know if I have postpartum depletion?
  • How long can it last?
  • How to recover from postpartum depletion?
  • How to nourish yourself postpartum and avoid when possible.

These are all questions we discuss in this brilliant episode today, with the duo from Fill Your Cup.

Fill Your Cup is the first Biochemist-led postpartum Doula village, which provides evidence-based care to nurture, nourish and support newborn mothers.

30 Aug 2022Using stairs in pregnancy00:15:31

Send us a text

Can I use stairs in pregnancy?

This was a question sent to me via DM on Instagram @fitnestmama, and I thought that it might be a good question to do a podcast topic on.

Pregnancy can be an exciting time, but it might also feel like a time when you are googling everything.  And, the question around the safety of climbing stairs during pregnancy is relatively common.

So if you’re pregnant, perhaps you have lots of stairs at home.  Or perhaps you have been finding it difficult to climb stairs.  Or perhaps you are just curious about the answer, then this is for you.

In this podcast episode I discuss:

  • Every pregnancy is different
  • Common reasons to climb stairs
  • Safety of climbing stairs during pregnancy
  • Precautions to take climbing stairs
  • What to do if you're achey/sore during pregnancy.

13 Sep 2022Birth story: how things can change quickly from routine to emergency00:52:50

Send us a text

In this birth stories podcast, Jacqui describes her emergency birth story.

Jacqui shares her incredible birth story. Unfortunately the birth didn't go according to plan and she describes her emergency birth story which included hours of labour, induction, haemorrhaging, and Jacqui shares how quickly things progressed to an emergency caesarean.

This episode does describe a traumatic birth experience, and if this episode does bring up anything for you, please don’t hesitate to speak to your healthcare provider, call Beyond Blue or the Panda helpline. And see the links with resources below.

However, although this episode does describe a traumatic experience, it also shows Jacqui’s amazing take on her situation, how Jacqui has come through this experience, and how her positive attitude has really helped her to move forwards.  Her bubbly beautiful personality just shines in this episode, and it was an absolute honour to be able to chat to Jacqui about her experience.

What does the economic downturn mean for women who are pregnant, or who've had babies recently?

Have you been reviewing your household costs recently?

One in three women who've had a baby had some sort of incontinence after having a baby, and one and two women have prolapse, according to the Australian Continence Foundation.

So, if you have been looking to cut costs, is there an alternative way you can access the support you need, without compromising on your short and long term healthcare needs?

Today is the start of a fertility series on the podcast, so over the next few weeks I will be talking to various expert on different topics around fertility.

And we are kicking off this fertility series with a chat about egg freezing with Dr Daniel Lantsberg.

Daniel is a consultant gynaecologist specialising in fertility, reproductive endocrinology and fertility preservation. His special interests are elective egg freezing, age-related infertility, unexplained infertility, male infertility, fertility preservation, PCOS, endometriosis and fibroids.

Daniel has worked in Israel and Australia, and he now works in Australia, privately in rooms in East Melbourne Victoria, and also at the reproductive services unit at the royal women’s hospital.

In having this conversation with Daniel, and I am sure you’ll agree with me once you’ve listened, but you can really tell that quality of care is of the utmost importance for him and his team, and treating each and every person he sees as an individual, and working with their goals, is super important.

It is a great discussion, and Daniel answers these common questions about egg freezing:

  • What is the best age to freeze eggs?
  • What is the process of freezing eggs?
  • Side effects of egg freezing
  • Egg freezing success rates
  • How much does it cost to have your eggs frozen?

13 Jun 2023Want to lose weight after birth? Do this instead.00:13:24

Send us a text

Firstly, congrats.  You’re a mum!

A whole new world has opened up.

Even if you thought you were prepared, I am guessing motherhood has been an amazing ride.

Today. I am broaching the topic of weight loss after birth, which I don't usually don’t do.

I usually avoid this topic.

For me and my program, FitNest Mama, it isn’t about weight loss.  Our physical recovery program post birth is about that inner strength.  Feeling better inside/out.

Regaining our confidence.

It’s about the huge correlation between physical and mental health.

It's not about weight loss.

However, from surveying over 500 members who have been through FitNest Mama, I know it is a common goal post birth.

So in this episode I discuss about different ways of reframing postpartum goals to help make them manageable, and achievable.

15 Jul 2023Induction, morphine, gas | Spilling the Milk with Mel [pregnancy journey, birth story, recovery]00:47:09

Send us a text

Join me as I spill the milk with Mel, mum of a 10 month old baby girl.

Mel experienced morning sickness, weight gain, pelvic girdle pain and was 10 days passed my due date when she gave birth.

She had a vaginal delivery after being induced and her pain relief included morphine and gas and even though she had hired a TENS machine, she didn't use it once.

Even though she had wanted to labour at home as much as possible and have a water birth she reports she had a wonderful team of midwives who were supportive and competent.

I trust you will love listening to Mel's story.
