Zero Waste Daniel is a New York based clothing designer and zero-waste lifestyle pioneer who uses pre-consumer waste sourced from New York City’s garment industry, as well as other hard-to-recycle materials, to create his line of genderless clothing and accessories that send nothing to landfills. At Zero Waste Daniel, fabric waste is kept at zero. Pattern making techniques, appliqués, tiled mosaics and embellishments absorb one hundred percent of the textile goods that are brought into the make / shop. Each piece from zwd diverts roughly one pound of fabric from hitting landfill. On this episode we talk about Daniel’s fashion career, zero waste design, ReRoll and his famous patchwork designs, using the teeny-tiniest of scraps, and so much more. I’m really, really excited for this episode, Daniel was an absolute blast, so let’s dive right into the episode! During the pandemic, she started classes in sustainability at FIT while she was furloughed, and also started selling tie-dyed vintage t-shirts on her Instagram. In the end, she decided not to go back to production work – turning to vintage clothing full time, which we discuss on the show. These days you can find her at the Brooklyn Flea every weekend, as well as shows like Manhattan Vintage. Pre-Loved Podcast: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena Hey, vintage lovers, I’m Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you’ll want to go thrifting with. Thanks for joining us! Last week, we heard from Liz Rickett, co-founder of the OR Foundation, and we had a conversation that I hope brought some nuance to your understanding of the global second-hand industry, including the industry in Accra, Ghana. Today we’re joined by four Ghanians: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena. All have different stories to tell in the second-hand sphere. First up, you’ll hear from David Adams. David’s family has run a second-hand clothing business in Kantamanto Market in Ghana for over thirty years. After finishing his degree, David took the helm of the business in 2014. He told us a bit about his business at Kantamanto, and what his day-to-day as a reseller looks like. Since David’s family has been in this industry for so long, I also wanted to get his perspective on how things have changed in the last 30 years. You’ll hear all this and more coming up on the show. Then, we have Sammy. Sammy is graduate of Radford University of Fashion, and today he’s a fashion designer and member of the Board of Fashion Ghana. His sustainable streetwear brand utilizes upcycled clothing from Kantamanto Market. Finally, we have Yayra and Kwamena of The Revival and Afro District. These two are vintage wizards. They have spent years sourcing gems from Kantamanto for resale, repair, upcycling and styling. Over the last year they have focused their efforts on promoting a culture of upcycling using clothing that cannot be sold in Kantamanto. Let’s hear from them now Let’s dive right in! 04 Sep 2023 | S7 Ep26 BLACK RABBIT VINTAGE: owner, Madelyn - on loving and restoring old things, recovering from a devastating fire, and the special stories attached to cherished garments. | 00:55:30
Pre-Loved Podcast is a weekly vintage fashion interview show, with guests you’ll want to go thrifting with! For more Pre-Loved Podcast, subscribe to our Patreon! Today’s episode is with Madelyn of Black Rabbit Vintage, based out of Benton Park in St. Louis. Madelyn has long been a vintage lover – she loves restoring old things to their former glory and passing on stories associated with vintage garments. She says she’s been sewing for as long as she was allowed to touch a machine, and since high school she knew she wanted to own her own space – maybe vintage, maybe vinyl, maybe old books? But now, 15 years later she does it all! We hear her whole story with opening Black Rabbit Vintage on today’s show. Tragically, in late June, around when we filmed this, Madelyn learned that Sk8 Libourious, an indoor skate park and community center in North City was on fire – the destruction of this space was devastating in its own right, but it was also where Madelyn stored a large amount of Black Rabbit Vintage’s back store. Luckily, her storage room did not fully burn in the fire and she was able to get a majority of my things out of the building, but it has been a long restoration and recovery journey. A journey which we talk about on today’s show – I also want to flag that there is a GoFundMe page for Black Rabbit’s recovery efforts linked in the shownotes, if you’re inclined to help out another vintage-lover. All this and more in today’s episode, so let’s just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE:

We also had secondhand stylist KG Lillian, hop on the line with us, she’s known for her thrifted style boxes, and Pinterest asked her to curate thrifted and vintage style boxes based on our festival trend data. We talk moodboarding, how vintage dealers and collectors might want to use Pinterest, and all the nostalgia we’re seeing in fashion – especially at Coachella this season! 18 Nov 2024 | S8 Ep32 TAILORED THRIFTS: Sierra started her vintage business as a college sophomore, alongside her fashion merchandising degree - on sustainable fashion in a college town. | 00:56:12
On today’s show, we’re chatting with Sierra, who started her secondhand clothing business, Tailored Thrift, while she was a sophomore in college. She wanted to bring a curated selection of vintage and secondhand to her college town – and what started as popups and markets turned into a brick-and-mortar store. I loved hearing about how Sierra worked on her business, almost as a research project tackled alongside getting her fashion merchandising degree. She found that in her college town there was a large group of people who wanted to shop sustainable, but didn’t feel like digging through the racks to thrift their clothing. We also shared stories of vintage shopping on travels – from Brimfield Market to the UK – and wild times at summer vintage markets in the Midwest. I loved getting to hear from Sierra’s experience as a college student entrepreneur, and I know you will, too – so, let’s dive right into it! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE:

In this episode, we talk about the role of the ILGWU in labor history, and how it revolutionized garment work in the United States. We discuss why consumers were trained to “look for the union label” and Nick shares some of the amazing stories he discovered researching the exhibition.
