Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 158 "Categories Of Prepping"

Please share this episode with friends. Here is the direct link: https://practicalpreppingpodcast.buzzsprout.com

In this episode we discuss the categories in prepping for which we need to be prepared, in order to be balanced

Practical Prepping
Website: www.practicalprepping.info
Email at info@practicalprepping.info

TODAY'S TOPIC: CATEGORIES OF PREPPING

In a grid down SHTF situation:
If you have a hundred guns & a million rounds of ammo,
but no food & water, you will likely die

If you have five years of food & water, but no first aid
or security, you will likely die.

We must be balanced, and address every catagory.
Start broad - what will be needed in every event
Then narrow down to the specific threats
Water & food necessary in all events
Faraday cage useful only in EMP/CME
Much lower probability of occurrence

Here are the catagories we believe preppers should address.

Financial prepping
Get our finances in order

Water
Storage, Filtering, and Purifying

Food
Shelf stable foods
Store what you normally eat

Fire
Learn to build a fire. It could save your life.
Learn to cook on an open fire

Lighting

Shelter
Usually where you live
Know where there is a storm shelter
Must not stay in mobile homes or campers during tornado warnings
Sheltering for a GHB situation

Skills/Knowledge
Navigation, Fire starting, First aid, Filtering & purifying water
Farming/agriculture, Knitting/sewing, Canning/Baking/Cooking

First Aid/Medical
We may be our own first responder
We may need to give aid before responders arrive
Learn CPR
Learn first aid skills
Stopping bleeding
Bandaging
Wound care
Fighting infection
Splinting
First aid kits

Sanitation
We need a poop plan
Stock household cleaning supplies

Power options

Traditionally, prepper books, forums, and websites are geared toward men, originated by men. Knowledge is Power!

  3. SELF-DEFENSE FOR WOMEN
  4. MENTAL TRAINING/EMERGENCY CONDITIONING

23 Feb 2022Episode # 167, "The Top Five Antibiotics To Fight The Most Common Infections."00:13:30

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 167, "The Top Five Antibiotics To Fight The Most Common Infections."

Antibiotics will be critical in long-term SHTF situations.

The info is shared from www.foodstoragemoms.com. Linda Loosil, author.

DISCLAIMER: Ms. Loosil is not a doctor or nurse, but has implemented medical info and advice from her own physician, and has researched numerous medical peer-reviewed articles.

TOP 5 ANTIBIOTICS, and what they affect:

  1. AMOXICILLIN -- strep throat, dental infections, sinus infections, bronchitis  bladder infections
  2. CEPHALEXIN (KEFLEX) -- skin/staph infections, bladder, bronchitis, sty, chronic conditions
  3. CIPROFLOXACIN (CIPRO) -- bladder  inhaled anthrax
  4. LEVOFLOXACIN (LEVAQUIN) -- pneumonia, diverticulitis, severe sinus infections
  5. AZITHROMYCIN (Z-PACK) -- strep, sinus, bronchitis, tonsilitis

Ms. Loosil's doctor allows her to purchase antibiotics directly from his office at a significant savings, and can be dispensed I  a 90-day supply. Her doctor stated that most prescription antibiotics are effective 5-10 YEARS after their expiration dates.

Again, antibiotics will be critical in long-term SHTF situations. We need to include them in out medical plan and our preps.

17 Mar 2022Episode # 183, "Could Prepping Become Illegal? Can The Government Really Take your Preps?"00:37:31

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 183, "Could Prepping Become Illegal?  Can The Government Really Take your Preps?"

Please share this important episode.
https://practicalpreppingpodcast.buzzsprout.com

Today's Topic: Could Prepping Become Illegal? Can The Government Really Take Our Preps?

The answer is "It possibly could" become illegal
And "YES", they could legally take our resources

This topic is easily verified and much research has gone into the episode.

Listen for:
Sept 8, 1950, Eisenhower enacted the Defense Protection Act
Since 1950, definition of "National Defense" has been expanded

June 1994, then President Bill Clinton signed EO12919
NATIONAL DEFENSE INDUSTRIAL RESOURCES PREPAREDNESS
It allows the Feds to seize all food and water resources
from public and private sectors

Jan 3, 2016 - then President Obama signed EO 13606
NATIONAL DEFENSE RESOURCES PREPAREDNESS Act

The language in the executive order encompasses control over a broad range of resources including:

“(1) all commodities and products capable of being ingested by either human beings or animals
(2) all forms of civil transportation
(3) all forms of energy
(4) all usable water from all sources
(5) health resources
(6) military conscription”
under both emergency and non-emergency conditions!

It covers food resources, facilities, livestock, veterinary resources, plant health resources, and the domestic distribution of farm equipment and commercial fertilizer;

We cover some things that can we do as individuals

18 Mar 2022Episode #184, "How We Can Deal With All That Is Going On In The World Today" - rewind00:36:24

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode #184, "How We Can Deal With All That Is Going On In The World Today" This episode features one of Krista's original songs from her album, "I've Got A Joy" - rewind

This episode is brought to you by Covenant Music and features Krista Lawley singing the title cut from her album, "I've Got A Joy."

Worldwide we have come through a very hard two years:
We have experienced Covid Lockdowns, School closures, Economic repression, Political upheaval, Skyrocketing unemployment, Business closings, Rising prices, Declining mental conditions, Mass depression, and Increasing suicides.

Now there is war in Ukraine with the threat of the use of nuclear weapons.

How do we come to a point of believing that God really is in control, that He will carry us through this?

We can Praise, Pray, or Meditate

For Christians, praise is worship
Prayer connects us with our creator
Meditation means "To ponder"
Who we are, our strengths & weaknesses,
     Our Core beliefs, life's purpose,
     Lessons learned,
     And our priorities

We end todays episode with one of Krista's original songs,
 "I've Got A Joy"

If you would like to hear more of Krista's music, you can find her on YouTube, just search for Krista Lawley.

15 Apr 2022Episode #204, "Easter 2022"00:11:54
Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 204, "Easter 2022"

Krista shares the ultimate prep, which is the most important decision one can make; trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.
The whole reason believers celebrate Easter, also called Resurrection Sunday, is because Jesus came to be our Savior, our Passover Lamb, to pay the penalty of death for our sins, and His resurrection from the grave proves His Lordship and power to save souls, not only for our eternal life in Heaven, but for a relationship with Him in our lives today.

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 212, "Situational Awareness, A Necessary Skill To Use In Everyday Life."

Please share this episode with friends. Here is the direct link: https://practicalpreppingpodcast.buzzsprout.com

Do you ever just watch people?

Maybe you see some of the same problems we have observed. People have their face in their phones and don't pay attention. We've seen them step into traffic, run into poles, and one even fell into a fountain, all because they were not paying attention.

Situational awareness can be broken down into three components, observation, comprehension, and projection. We explain each one, and how they fit together to help you make good decisions based on good information, and thereby  keep your family and yourself safe.

In this episode, we discuss situational awareness in a number of scenarios. Here's a few we discuss: eating in restaurants, in parking lots, exiting businesses, malls, doctors offices, etc., and returning to your vehicle. We discuss getting gas, Using ATMs, returning home, how to tell and what to do if you are being followed.

Situational awareness principles apply to daily life as well as SHTF situations.

Keep your head on a swivel, stay aware of your situation, and make good decisions based on good information.

Stuff happens. Stay prepared!

04 May 2022Episode #217, "Learning as you go, in life, as well as in prepping"00:25:58

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode #217, "Learning as you go, in life, as well as in prepping"

We should strive to improve each time we do something, in all areas of life.
Seek to increase your prepping knowledge regularly
Work to improve our prepping skills each week or each month

Understand That We Will Make Mistakes
Do not fear failure, or making mistakes, unless you are a bomb disposal technician.
Thomas Edison, when questioned about having unsuccessfully tried thousands of times to make a working lightbulb, replied, "I have not failed.... I've just found 10,000 ways that wont work"

Learn from our mistakes
What went right?
What went wrong?
What can we do better next time?

Learn from the mistakes of others
What did they do wrong?
What could they have done to avoid the mistake?

Try doing old things in new ways
We're not reinventing the wheel here, but looking for little improvements in systems or procedures
ie: A better way to inventory your food or your water storage, or rain water collection

Remember that we can learn something from everyone
Sometimes What/How to do
Sometimes What/How not to do

Doing a "hot wash," "post mortem," or "after-action" of an event or practice and make notes
What did we do right?   Or what went right?
What did we do wrong?  Or What went wrong?
Analyze the information
And Develop a plan

Commit to the learning process !
Learn something every day
Read something every day
Books, journals, website, articles, magazines, forums, social
media groups (may have to filter thru the clutter)
Even if only for a few minutes each day
Watch/listen to something once or twice each week
Youtube videos, podcasts, especially while driving

Recapping
Learn as you go
Don't fear mistakes
Figure out what you did right or did wrong
Try doing old things in new ways
     ie: Fire starting, water filtration,
Commit to the learning process

Do these things and you will be light years ahead down the road.

05 May 2022Episode # 218, ""Having A Positive Attitude And A Survival Mindset, rewind"00:22:32

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 218, ""Having A Positive Attitude And A Survival Mindset, rewind"

Please share this episode with friends. Here is the direct link: https://practicalpreppingpodcast.buzzsprout.com

In this episode we discuss: "Having A Positive Mental Attitude and Survival Mindset, And Dealing With Stress"

"A positive mental attitude will not let you do anything, but it will let you do everything better than a negative attitude will". - Zig Ziglar

" Whatever the mind can conceive, and believe, the mind can achieve" - Napolean Hill

"We become what we think about" - Earl Nightingale

We all know people who are so negative that we often hate to see them coming. We also know people who are so positive, to quote Ziglar again, they "would go after Moby Dick and take the tarter sauce with them."

In such a time when we need to use our preps or put our emergency plans into action, the stresses mount up. Stress can impede our performance in areas of memory, decision making, and multitasking, as well as increase fatigue.

Two basic types of stress: chronic stress and acute stress.

Chronic Stress
Remove the stress, if possible
Take some deep breaths
Take a break
Break things down in to smaller tasks
Count to 10 before speaking or responding
Take a break from news & social media
Develop Regular routines
Prepping relieves stress & worry
Make a plan and work your plan

Acute stress
Train to handle acute stress
Visualize Scenerios
The mind doesn't know the difference between visualization and the actual doing of a thing.
A Survival mindset says, "I am ready, I will prevail"
A survival mindset is the prepper mindset. We decide ahead of time that we will survive most any situation and that we will do what it takes to protect our family.

Decide ahead of time what you will do.
Acknowledge there will be stress
Plan for the stress
Plan a course of action

What are you willing to do to save your family or to save your own life?
Are you willing to turn others away when there is little food?
Are you willing to take another's life?

We decide ahead of time that we wont let the situation drag us down.
We prepare. We train.
We visualize scenarios so that when we get there we are prepared because in our minds, we have already been there.

Find ways to relieve your stress

Have some fun

In this episode we discuss recently discovered information about "keyword warrants" being used to compell Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft to turn over key word searches and user information to government agencies.

We also discuss the IRS proposal (in the three trillion dollar bill before congress) that will require banks to send all transactions from every bank account with $600 or more transactions per year.

We discuss a whole lot more including our children's education and even history.

16 May 2022Episode #225, Reporting Storm Spotter Information To The National Weather Service."00:35:24

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode #225, Reporting Storm Spotter Information To The National Weather Service."

In this episode, we discuss what and how to make storm spotter reports to the National Weather Service, even if you have not had the Storm Spotter training.

What To Report:

Tornadoes, funnel clouds, rotating wall clouds
Hail one inch, or quarter-sized, or larger.
(Do not use "pea sized" or "marble sized" in reports, use
standard measurements or coin sizes for reports)
Wind speed, 58+ mph,  measured or estimated
Wind damage to trees, roofs, structures, or downed power lines.

Check your local National Weather Service website to find the ways to reports to them. You can make phone reports, online reports, for most local offices, and apps for others.

We discourage "storm chasing" for the untrained and inexperienced, but we certainly encourage you to get "storm spotter" training.

18 May 2022Episode #227, "Cooking Without Electricity."00:22:36

Practical Prepping Podcast, Episode #227, "Cooking Without Electricity."

In many natural disasters, we often lose electricity, occasionally for extended time. This creates a challenge in preparing food. We must have alternatives for preparing food.

In this episode, we explore many options for cooking without electricity, and some creative ways to bake, fry, and slow cook.

We must stress that USING A GRILL INSIDE IS DANGEROUS AND CAN KILL!

A propane cook stove inside can be safely used for short periods in well ventilated areas.

Here are some of the options we discuss for alternative cooking methods when the power is off.

Butane stove, Rocket stove, alcohol stove, backpack stoves

Grills may be used for more than grilling:
Side burner Useage
Using a crock pot insert for slow cookIng
Baking
Frying
Roasting
Smoking

Turkey fryers are for more than frying turkeys

Cooking On Open Fires
Fireplace
Camp fires
With foil  &  Disposable pans

Heating Water

25 May 2022Episode # 231, "Tips For Saving Money"00:50:32

Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 231, "Tips For Saving Money"
Please share this episode with friends, family, and on social media.

In this episode we discuss: Money Saving Ideas

Dump cable or satellite TV

  • Use a smart TV like a Roku Tv and a streaming service.
  • Prices vary greatly, so do your research.
  • Antenna TV is an option as well, and is necessary for local events and weather coverage.

Eliminate that daily $5 cup of coffee
Saves money & tastes better

Buying in bulk
At wholesale clubs and by sharing with family

Shopping at Dollar Stores
Name brands are the same
Store brands have significantly lower prices

In the grocery store
Using coupons
BOGO deals
Divide larger quantities for later use.

Buy generic medications when possible
Especially pain relievers and stomach medications

Combine car trips
Save gas by doing multiple errands in one trip.

Do regular maintenance on vehicles
Vehicles will last longer, and you'll get better fuel mileage

Use cloths rather than paper towels
"Bar mops"  are bulk towels, usually a 12-14 inch square of white terry cloth save a lot of money compared to paper towels.

Eat at/from home
Eating out can get expensive
Meal preps for the week are very popular

Utilize Ebay, Craigs List, FB market Place and thrift stores
Here are some good sites:

Do online price comparisons & shop locally
You can see prices, compare, and call for availability.

Online shopping

  • Compare prices, not all sites prices the same.
  • Compare exact models, features.
  • Read reviews.
  • Utilize free shipping.

Utilize free cancellations for travel or subscription-based services
Plans/needs can change-don't get stuck
