14 Feb 2024E027 – Pazz Kluger with Pat Av – Infectious NY/NJ Post-punk dramatic Alterna Goth01:12:50
In this episode I chat with Patrick Av who creates post-punk dramatic alterna goth under the project name Pazz Kluger. Pat is drawn to the drama of relationships in new wave and post-punk songs and seeks to write and sing about the darker, tortured side that we’ve all felt at times in our life. Even with the darkness, one can feel an underlying longing for peace and wholeness in each of these songs. We had a great conversation about his musical beginnings, his post-punk influences, and discussed some of the songs from his substantial catalogue. If you love Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Sound, The Mission UK, The Chameleons, The Church and other post-punk/new wave bands from the 80’s you will dig the music of Pazz Kluger as much as I do. Thanks for joining us! All songs and song clips are used with the permission of Patrick Av - Pazz Kluger. All other sounds and clips used were procured from publicly posted clips and used under fair use. 08 Dec 2024E036 – Steve Scott - The New Wave Essential Emotional Tourist Part 201:36:41

This episode is part two of the conversation Jim Anderson and I had with Steve Scott. Steve is a legendary yet obscure musician and artist who played an essential role in the integration of new wave music and art in the church in the late 70’s and early 80’s. His unique musical style and vision has had a profound effect on many. Please follow the links in the show notes to check out Steve’s albums and spoken word projects. If you enjoy Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, The Associates, The Comsat Angels and other early new wave/post-punk acts, you should check out his music and poetry. Thanks for joining us!

17 Oct 2023021 - "What is Post-punk?" Follow-up - Why Talking Heads, Television, Ultravox and XTC lost out to Magazine00:39:37

In this episode, I do a follow-up to Episode 005 - What is Post-punk and welcome to the Post-punk Heartstrings State of Mind– In that episode, I gave my own personal definition of post-punk and offered my pick for the first post-punk album released. After the episode, I received the following feedback from a listener: “Enjoyed this episode! I'd have been interested in more explication on what are the hallmarks of post-punk and why Television, Talking Heads, etc. were not counted. What exactly were the classic rock sounds you heard to keep them from being counted as a true post-punk album.” So, I decided to do a follow-up episode to explain a little more and provide some examples of why I excluded some of the releases the listener mentioned.

Artists/albums covered are:

Television – Marquee Moon – 1977

Taking Heads – Talking Heads – 1977

Ultravox – Ha! Ha! Ha! – 1977

White Music – XTC – 1978

Magazine – Real Life – 1978

All other clips procured from publicly posted clips and used under fair use.

11 Jul 2023018 - The Police - Synchronicity: Connected Chaos with guest Jamie Harmon02:05:40

In this episode, Jamie Harmon returns to the podcast and we discuss The Police’s new wave/post-punk/Jazz master work Synchronicity. The influence of The Police on later post-punk bands is often overlooked and Synchronicity displays the band at their most eclectic and chaotic. In spite of the infighting, the band was able to put together the #1 album in the country and create the most ever played rock song: "Every Breath You Take."

19 Oct 2024E034 – Michael Knott Vocal Tribute01:02:38

In this episode, I share about the impact of Michael Knott’s life and art through music and vocal tributes. Shortly after Michael’s passing, I put a call out for friends to share voice tributes through text and social media messages. I have combined these tributes with musical clips from Michael’s extensive catalog to help me process the passing of this creative genius and dear soul. It’s amazing to hear from and read about how many individuals have pointed out that they never  met Michael and yet they feel like they knew him. What an amazing legacy! I hope that fans of his work will enjoy reminiscing and hearing about the impact his life had on those who have shared in this episode. For those of you who are not familiar with Mike's work, you will hear pieces of Morrissey, Peter Murphy, Nick Cave, The Mission UK, Elliot Smith, and many others in his musical style. Please take some time to check out his music. Thank you so much for joining us in celebrating Michael's life!

Many thanks to Steven Guiles, Doug Gillis, Chris Taylor, Mark Feldbush, and Steve Chalk for sharing your voices in tribute!

28 Feb 2023013 - Sam Phillips - Part 2: The Indescribable Wow – Dissecting Romantic Relationships with Acid Pop01:07:39

Mark Feldbush and I continue our discussion of Sam (Leslie) Phillips’ albums The Turning, The Indescribable Wow & Cruel Inventions. These three albums represent a pivotal time in Sam's life and in this episode, Mark & I discuss The Indescribable Wow, her 1988 album that was the first on the Virgin record label.  We dig into each song, trying to describe the indescribable… and seemingly falling short.

Articles quoted:

“My record company was demanding dishonesty from me, saying weird things like ‘This song just sounds a little too sexy. We don’t know why, but you’ve got to change it. And no, we don’t know how you’re supposed to change it.’ At that point, it just got ridiculous. I said ‘This is ludicrous. I’m not going to continue with this label.’ At first they were upset and said ‘You have to.  You’re under contract.’ I was selling well enough for them that they didn’t want to let me go. But I said ‘There’s a moral clause in my contract.  And you know what? I’ve slept with someone that I’m not married to. And I’m not ashamed to tell anybody about that. And I will.’ They said ‘Okay, you’re free to go. You’re out of your contract.’ That’s how easy it was to get out of it. That’s how silly it was.” -  Jeffery Overstreet; Year unknown; A Conversation with Sam Phillips, The Image Journal; Issue 60; Date accessed 2/27/23;  https://imagejournal.org/article/conversation-sam-phillips/

“I think the so-called born again movement in this country has about as little to do with real Christianity as a Xerox of a hundredth-generation print of the Mona Lisa has to do with the real thing. The born-again movement is more about obsession and narrow-mindedness and repression—and true Christianity is about mercy and freedom and love.”- CHRIS WILLMAN; AUG. 28, 1988;   Sam Phillips . . . 15 Mar 2024E028 – Palm Ghosts – with Joe Lekkas & Ben Douglas – Haunting post-punk disillusionment that dances you into the glimmering light of hope01:53:34

In this episode I have the privilege of chatting with Joe Lekkas and Ben Douglas, the two main drivers behind the band Palm Ghosts. I chatted with the fellas about their beginnings, inspirations and writing process as well as digging into some of the songs off of their latest album, I Love You, Burn in Hell. The duo, along with drummer, Walt Epting, craft melodic yet brooding rhythms and melodies that sway you back and forth between the New Wave/alternative sounds of the 80’s and the modern alternative post-punk revival sounds of the 21st century. Joe & Ben are a couple of really down to earth guys and I really enjoyed our conversation. The band manages to remind the listener of a myriad of 80’s & 90’s new wave/post-punk/alternative/shoe gaze bands while creating a new unidentifiable genre that seems to belong only to them. If you love Joy Division, New Order, The Cure, Peter Gabriel, XTC, Echo & The Bunnymen, Mission UK, The Psychedelic Furs, The Doves, Bloc Party, Simples Minds (Yeah… the list goes on and on!) then you will be as enamored with Palm Ghosts as I am. This year (2024), the band will be releasing a series of songs, one at a time, every 2 weeks, which will end up populating 4 EPs and ultimately a double LP by the end of the year so be sure to check them out on the streaming platform of your choice. Thanks for joining us!

05 Dec 2022010 Chris Taylor & Love Coma - Part 2: The album Love Coma was meant to make and The Mad Painter01:12:08

My Guest: Chris Taylor of the band Love Coma In this episode, I talk with Chris about the wind down of the early Love Coma years, the move into his solo work, and how “The Mad Painter” was a major influence on his visual art. We touch on the political climate, the repression of the church on rock and roll and why Chris feels that the latest self-titled Love Coma release is the album the band was meant to make. 10 Feb 2023012 - Sam Phillips - Part 1: The Turning - Pulling Down Your High Ideals01:36:14

My friend Mark and I sat down to discuss Sam (Leslie) Phillips albums The Turning, The Indescribable Wow & Cruel Inventions. These three albums represent a pivotal time in Sam's life and in this episode, Mark & I discuss  The Turning, the album that started Sam's break away from the Fundamental Christian machine and CCM music. We dig into each song and reflect back how they relate to her transition.
