Positively Trek 177: Book Club: Terok Nor - Day of the Vipers This Book’s Not Gonna Have a Happy Ending
The Occupation: its legacy looms large over the entire Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series, with the scars of that brutal era still felt by Bajor years later. However, not much has been told about the start of the occupation; what was Bajor like before the Cardassians came? What drove Cardassia to commit the crimes of the occupation? The subject of this week’s Book Club episode explores these questions and more!
Before we finish with The Lost Era, there are just three more books to cover: The Terok Nor trilogy, chronicling the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan and Bruce talk about the first of these: Day of the Vipers by James Swallow. We discuss the characters both familiar and new, life on Bajor prior to the occupation, the state of Cardassia, dramatic irony, personal stories, scapegoats, the rise of the occupation, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.

20 Jun 2024 | Breaking Bread with Starfleet Officers | 00:59:45
Positively Trek 274: Breaking Bread with Starfleet Officers Food and Drink in the Star Trek Universe Throughout its 58-year history, food and drink has played a significant role in the Star Trek universe. Food can be a cultural touchstone, from the Klingons and their gagh, bloodwine, and rokeg blood pie, to the Vulcans and their plomeek soup, and the Bajorans with their very spicy hasperat. Peace treaties can be hammered out over the dinner table. Captains can search living nebulas for coffee. And a certain Talaxian can cook for his crew in the ultimate expression of love. In this episode of the Positively Trek podcast, hosts Barry and Dan share their thoughts on the role of food and drink in Star Trek. The discussion ranges from what the Klingons’ disgust of cooked food says about their culture, to what Janeway’s love of coffee says about her, and even talking a bit about our favorite chefs over the years. So grab a raktajino, try your best to order a hot, plain tomato soup from the replicator, and join us for a discussion that’s sure to make you hungry! Positively Trek 269: The Vibe That Is Data Part 2: Data in Nemesis, Picard, and Beyond… Warning: This episode contains spoilers for all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard, as well as minor spoilers for the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth and final season. Data is one of the most enduring and beloved characters in the Star Trek universe. When the character was killed off in the film Star Trek Nemesis, many Trek fans believed that he would one day be back. Now, thanks to Star Trek: Picard, they have been proven right when Data was raised from the dead not once, but twice! In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Barry and Dan continue their two-part discussion of Data. We talk about his death in Nemesis, what that death means in the larger context of pop culture, his first resurrection in season one of Star Trek: Picard, his (extremely) extended family, and finally his most recent incarnation in Picard’s third season! 22 Jan 2021 | Book Club: Picard: The Dark Veil | 01:08:47
Positively Trek 84: Picard: The Dark VeilWith Special Guest: Author James Swallow! The year is 2386, and the United Federation of Planets has been dealt a serious blow: synthetic lifeforms have attacked the Utopia Plantia Shipyards at Mars, derailing a massive relief effort to save the Romulan people from an impending supernova. The Federation, reacting to this tragedy, has turned inward, halting relief efforts in the Romulan Empire and instituting a ban on research and development of synthetic lifeforms. All of this serves as the backdrop to the situation facing Captain Riker and the crew of the U.S.S. Titan as they respond to an urgent distress call from the Jazari, a species situated very near the Romulan Neutral Zone… In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan and Bruce welcome renowned author James Swallow to the show to discuss his latest novel, Star Trek: Picard: The Dark Veil. We talk about the genesis of the novel, the links to the Star Trek: Titan book series, Thaddeus Worf Troi-Riker, the situation in the Federation, the Romulans, the Jazari, easter eggs and continuity connections, and wrap up with where James can be found online and what he has coming next! 23 Mar 2025 | 19th Century Technobabble | 01:06:53
Positively Trek 292: 19th Century Technobabble Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World As Star Trek fans, we often see our favourite franchise reflected in books, films, and other media that isn’t, strictly speaking, “Star Trek.” One such example is the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, adapted from the Captain Jack Aubrey novels by Patrick O’Brian. With its 19th century nautical setting, Master and Commander contains much of the DNA of other influences that eventually found their way into Star Trek, including the majesty and adventure of a highly-trained crew on a ship pushing the boundaries of exploration on the edge of the frontier. In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Barry and Dan talk about Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, commenting on the many parallels it has with Star Trek, cementing it as the second best Star Trek film (after, of course, Galaxy Quest)! 07 Aug 2020 | Book Club: Strangers From the Sky | 00:56:30
In the history of the Federation, the story of first contact between Humans and Vulcans is well-known: Earth astronauts came to the rescue of a Vulcan ship, stranded in our system’s asteroid belt. The rest is, as they say, history. But what if the official story is not how it actually happened? What if first contact with the Vulcans actually came many years earlier? And what if Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise were instrumental in that event happening the way it did? In this, the first episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by author Margaret Wander Bonanno to talk about her renowned and much-celebrated novel, Strangers From the Sky. We discuss how Margaret became a fan and an author of Trek books, how this story came about, how it stands up in the face of the canon that has moved on in the years since it was published, the characters that populate the story, and how its legacy has affected Trek Lit in the years since.

Positively Trek 265: Book Club: Seven of Nine Knows Her Name! Picard: Firewall with David Mack & Guest Host Jessie Gender In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, Dan Gunther and guest host Jessie Gender welcome David Mack to the show to discuss his new novel, Star Trek: Picard: Firewall. When the USS Voyager returned to Earth, Seven of Nine’s life looked promising: Earth, the bastion of acceptance and equality, stood ready to accept the former Borg with open arms. Right? Reality proved to be very different from what had been promised, and soon Seven finds herself on the outside looking in. Refused a commission in Starfleet, and even denied Federation membership, she sets out to find herself, beginning a journey that would eventually lead to the Fenris Rangers and the Seven that we meet in the series Star Trek: Picard. We talk about all four issues, including our thoughts on the story, whodunnit, whether or not Worf acts out of character, and speculate on Garak’s guilt or innocence. We wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings on the series as a whole.
