“I was pretty tweaked out all the time, right? Anybody else? There was no in-between. I’m either using or I’m not. His disposition while drinking resembles his normal nature but little. If we can’t be honest with ourselves, if we can’t differentiate the true from the false, how do we know what our normal nature was? Did we know what our normal nature was? I mean, lying, cheating, and thieving really is not who I am.”

Wayne shares his experience of being extroverted even while tweaking, keeping people around him only to complain about their presence. This behavior underscores the Jekyll and Hyde transformation many alcoholics experience, becoming dangerously antisocial despite being, at their core, good people.

After making our review, we ask God’s forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should be taken. I hear a lot of people saying, ‘Why would I ask for forgiveness from this power I don’t believe in?’ Well, first of all, you’re coming to believe. And second, you’re going to learn that forgiveness is a divine act, so it’s going to have to come from the divinity within me. Because the flesh says, ‘I forgive, but I don’t forget,’ which means I didn’t forgive anything—I’m just waiting for timing. But forgiveness from the divine means it’s been completely removed or it’s been completely repurposed for me. Does that make sense? “So we took stock honestly first we searched out the flaws in our makeup which caused our failure. Being convinced that self manifested in various ways was what had defeated us, we considered its common manifestations. Do you understand when they use words like that that we don’t commonly word what they’re talking about? I think of myself one way. But then I want to impress you or I’m mad at you or something and I act out in a different way that is not how I want to think about myself. That’s when my self manifested based on fear or whatever. So I’m going to have to look at that to see how I ended up in the deplorable condition I ended up.”

“Main problem centers in the mind, right? And so one of the things that you cannot do as a human but we still desperately want to believe we can is we can’t think our way into a state of being. Beingness is absent self. My being knows I’m part of a greater whole. That’s why when you experience the power, I can tell you I felt it too. But I can’t do that when I’m aware of me; I can only do that when I’m aware of him. So the fact is I can’t do it at all. Does that make sense? And if you don’t believe me, think about the most selfless, humble thing you ever did.”
