04 Dec 2024 | S06E01 Celine Dion 'The Colour Of My Love' | 01:57:18
It's a brand new season of PCL, you wonderful people! A reason for celebration and joy all over the world except for the fact that our first episode is apparently on a Celine Dion album that first came out in 1993. How is this the case? It's the one with 'Power Of Love' and 'Think Twice' on it, two monster power ballads which are a weakness of ours so perhaps this will actually be up our streets? There is also a record breaking amount of album and single releases that we get the chance to talk about because Celine's album was at number for multiple weeks at the start of 1995 so you can hear us chat about the likes of Leftfield, Quicksand, PJ Harvey and for some reason, PJ & Duncan. And we also bring up the topic of Jimmy Nail about three times so sorry about that. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
16 Aug 2022 | S04E18 Pet Shop Boys ’Very’ | 01:30:17
It turns out that this was the Pet Shop Boys' first, and only, number one album which was a surprise to both of us considering how big they were in the latter half of the 1980s but neither of us had actually heard a PSB's album in full before so we went into this with pretty high hopes that there would be some gems inside. Just how many gems we did uncover remains to be seen. But we also chatted about other classic acts such as Afghan Whigs, Duff McKagan and Dave gets to give us a very level-headed opinion on Damon Albarn and Blur. Fun times. You can hear the full Pet Shop Boys album as well as loads of the bands and songs we chat about on this episode's companion Spotify playlist. As always come and say hello on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages where we always post terrible jokes about the most recent album we've done so you can give us grief on there. And check out our ongoing Spotify compilation playlist featuring "the best" songs from every single number one album we've done to date. Thanks as always to everyone who has given us the price of a pint on our paypal or even just spread the word and told some friends about our show - it warms our hearts every time we get mentioned in a Twitter thread asking what podcasts people are listening to or would recommend to others. Until next time!
06 Jul 2022 | S04E16 Meat Loaf ’Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell’ | 01:44:31
We are back after a longer than anticipated break so thank you for sticking with us (or thank you for just joining us if you're a new listener - you're very welcome), we reckon you're going to enjoy this episode a lot. We managed to bully Dave's wife Jenny into joining us to talk about Meat Loaf's massive 'Bat Out Of Hell II' album because when she was a child it was the only CD she owned and therefore thanks to the effects of Stockholm Syndrome she has some very fond memories of it. But how does she feel about it 30 years later? As well as discussing this veritable rock opera we manage to also touch upon things like Stone Temple Pilots, Paul Weller and whether or not Culture Beat should have had a second career as a male stripper called Mr Vein.
19 Feb 2020 | S03E01 Wet Wet Wet 'High On The Happy Side' | 01:17:29
Good crikey, it's Season 3 of Pop, Collaborate & Listen! And what better way to start off our journey through 1992's number one albums than Wet Wet Wet? Well, probably loads of ways to be honest but we don't make the rules. We just listen to what the pop charts dictate and then whinge about it for an hour or so each week. Neither Dave nor Krister had ever heard this whole album before because of course not so it really was a journey into the unknown. Obviously we were familiar with the big 80s hits that the band had released and with their seemingly neverending cover version of 'Love Is All Around' but this album was unfamiliar territory. Did it convert us to a newfound love of Pellow & Co? We shall have to see. During our conversation we look at an absolute ton of other releases that came out in the six week period at the start of 1992, there are some absolute treasures that we chat about like KISS, Daisy Chainsaw and Sultans of Ping just for starters. Seriously though, check out this week's Spotify playlist of the whole Wet Wet Wet album and all the other stuff we talk about - it's fantastic. And as usual please do feel free to get in contact via any method you choose, lots of links to do so at our website www.pclpodcast.com
01 Dec 2021 | S04E10 Janet Jackson ‘janet.‘ | 01:38:50
Almost halfway through 1993 now and after a few episodes of more leftfield (let's just forget that we ever talked about Cliff Richard) records we've come to a big pop album in the shape of 'janet.' by Janet Jackson. Neither of us have ever heard the full album before but since seven of the songs were released as singles surely we must know quite a lot of it already, right? Right? Along the way we also discuss things like Anthrax, Snow and Guru's Jazzamatazz. Nice. Do check out our social media platforms and have a listen to this episode's companion playlist with all of the Janet album as well as the other tunes that we talk about and play as well. And you can hear our ongoing Spotify playlist made up of our favourite tunes from each episode to date here.
07 Apr 2020 | S03E07 The Cure 'Wish' | 01:27:48
We're back with a proper episode! Yes - we, two men in our 40s, worked out how to use Zoom and managed to record this episode while sitting in our pants in our respective bedrooms. And it turned out surprisingly well if we do say so ourselves. Another album that neither of us had actually ever heard before but obviously we know plenty of Cure songs so we were looking forward to this one. Along the way we discuss L7, how Dave was almost a goth in sixth form and the Sisters of Mercy. Companion playlist is here, links to all our social media are on our website www.pclpodcast.com and keep an eye on our facebook page for details of when our next live music quiz will be (hint: probably every Friday evening during the coronavirus lockdown at 8pm GMT).
10 Apr 2024 | S05E15 The Prodigy 'Music For The Jilted Generation' | 02:00:59
Some albums are deserving of the term 'gamechanger' and here's a massive one from 1994. The Prodigy's second album 'Music For The Jilted Generation' introduced so many people to dance music who might not previously have given it a second thought so we were very excited to do an episode on it. So excited in fact that we brought a guest in to help us out so huge thanks to Cliff Barnes from the Devil Times Five Horror Movie Podcast who is a Prodigy uber-fan as well with loads of insights. Among us we also talk about other acts and albums from the time like Downset, Killing Joke and Julian Cope. Oh and the Vengaboys of course but presumably that goes without saying. We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! And as always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
27 Oct 2021 | S04E09 New Order ‘Republic‘ | 01:25:43
Join us in this episode for a look at one of the most influential bands of the 80s and their only album from the 90s. After the whole Manchester scene had exploded around them, with baggy and shoegaze coming to the fore and then fading out again, with their label Factory Records and their club The Hacienda becoming the absolute epitomes of cool, could New Order find their place in a new decade? Along the way we also chat about things like Credit To The Nation, Rancid and Terrorvision to name but a few. Hope you enjoy this episode and don't forget to check out our ongoing Spotify playlist which features at least one song from every number one album we've done so far.
27 Oct 2020 | S03E15 Prince 'Love Symbol' | 01:47:45
We are back with a much more frivolous and light-hearted episode than our previous one so you can expect many more smutty jokes and terrible puns throughout alongside our usual incisive music knowledge and expertise. Ahem. This week we are listening to and chatting about Prince's 'Love Symbol' album which Dave has vague memories of from back in 1992 and Krister has definitely never heard before in his life. And because it's Prince, and you can't tell him what to do, there are 18 tracks on the album across about 50 different genres. So plenty to get stuck into, alongside the whole thing about it being a rock opera soundtrack to another flopped Prince movie. We do also get the chance to talk about things like Madonna, Temple of The Dog and that awful rave version of the Tetris music so there's something to look forward to. You can hear all of the above as well as the full Prince album and all the other bits we mention on our companion Spotify playlist here and catch up with our ongoing Best Of The PCL Albums playlist here.
11 Nov 2020 | S03E16 Bonus Episode - Rage Against The Machine S/T | 01:33:50
Yes yes yes, we know that this was never a number one UK album and therefore it doesn't fit our remit, but our podcast, our rules. Both Dave and Krister are such big fans of this album that we decided to do a full bonus episode on it to give it the props it deserves. And not only that but we were lucky enough to persuade the legendary man behind Download Festival, Andy Copping to come and talk to us about his recollections of the album coming out back in 1992 and all the times he's put the band on from his days of booking gigs at Nottingham Rock City up to getting them to headline Download in 2010. We've included about half of the full chat in this episode but we'll put the whole thing out by itself in a couple of days so that you can hear all of Andy's thoughts and stories. As always we'd love to hear your take on this album so please do get in contact via our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or email. And tickets for Download 2021 are on sale already so get on it and we'll see you there.
13 Apr 2021 | S04E01 Little Angels 'Jam' | 01:44:25
WHAT THE HECK? Yes indeed, it's the first episode of Season 4! We've finished with the music of 1992 and are casting it off like a bootleg T-shirt that you bought outside the gig but then lost all of its backprint and one of its sleeves after just one wash. And here we are looking down the barrel of a very exciting 1993 with so many amazing bands and new genres appearing almost weekly, a brand new world. So obviously we're starting this journey off with Little Angels and their album 'Jam' which it turns out, no really, got to number one in January 1993. I know. It's a band and a genre that both of us thoroughly ignored at the time so neither of us had any clue what this was going to sound like - well I mean, that's not strictly true but you know what we mean. But along the way we do get to chat about other bands like Apache Indian, Jesus Jones and The The so that's always a treat. All of these acts, as well as the entire Little Angels album, are included on this episode's companion playlist. As usual follow us on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram and check out our website for more links to stuff. And don't forget our ever-growing Spotify playlist of at least one song from each of the albums we chat about.
09 Dec 2020 | S03E18A Best Albums of 1992 Special - Part One | 01:22:17
Well we've done all of the UK number one albums of 1992 so as is now customary we're rounding up this season with a two-part episode of our own choices of what we reckon the best albums released that year were. Or our personal favourites at least - some of our choices probably wouldn't make any other proper Best Of list. We've also invited some special guests to drop in with their favourites - on this episode you'll hear from: Andy Copping, the man who runs Download Festival and has been booking live acts in the UK for more years than we care to imagine; Rich Wilson, stand-up comedian and the podcaster behind the Insane In The Men Brain and Insane In The Fem Brain podcasts; and Carla & Zoe from Number One Rerun podcast who are another pair of podcasters looking back at pop culture from the past who love a terrible joke just as much as we do. We also asked our listeners for their top five lists before we recorded this episode and we've put up all the submissions we got on our website so you can see the sort of stuff that everyone else is into. This is part one of our top ten, the next episode will be our proper top fives so look out for that, but in the meantime enjoy this one and feel free to get in contact and tell us just how wrong we are about our choices.
09 Feb 2022 | S04E12 Jamiroquai ’Emergency On Planet Earth’ | 01:45:46
Back with a new episode about everyone's favourite Acid Jazz hat-botherer and his band Jamiroquai and for this one we have drafted in the absolutely wonderful comedian Phil Lucas to help us out as he is a massive fan of the band and promised us he wouldn't fall out with us too much if we were nasty about Jay Kay during the recording. If you haven't already heard the podcast that Phil Lucas produced with the much-missed Phil Jerrod, Crash Bang Wallop, then we cannot recommend it enough if you like laughing until you're sore. Along the way in this episode we also talk about the likes of Chaka Demus & Pliers, House of Love and Phil introduces us to the wonders of fake porno soundtrack composer Klaus Harmony. Also during our conversation we refer to a couple of video clips which we promised to link and so here they are: A truly horrifying 'Stars In Their Eyes'-style show featuring a white woman becoming Stevie Wonder; and The Fast Show's very thinly veiled pisstake of Jamiroquai. As always, please follow us on social media if you're not already, all the links are on our website. And tell your mates how good we are, go on. Do us a favour.
31 Mar 2020 | Lockdown 90s Music Quiz 01 | 00:32:15
It's Pop, Isolate & Listen this week! Everywhere is on lockdown so we decided to put together a 90s based music quiz which we held live on our Facebook page but have also uploaded for you here in case you missed it at the time. We'll hopefully be back with our normal programming next week but in the meantime test your knowledge and let us know on our social media how you did. Big thanks to Chris Green of Tyketto for helping us out with the music round, the man is a guitar god as you will hear on here. If you want to test your friends with this quiz you can download the PDF of the questions and answers here.
24 Apr 2024 | S05E16 Rolling Stones 'Voodoo Lounge' with guest Gaz Jones | 02:04:03
Thirty years after their debut album it turns out that the Rolling Stones are still capable of getting to number one in the UK with a new record. The 90s were fucking weird. Is this actually a good album though, should the Stones still have bothered putting out new music to add to their legacy? Opinions are divided. For this episode we are joined by the wonderful Gaz Jones from the Trve.Cvlt.Pop (and previously Track One, Side One) podcast who is a big Stones fan and actually bought this record in the week it came out back in 1994. Big big thanks again to him for coming to join us on this one. And this week we also get the chance to chat about bands like Kerbdog, Marilyn Manson and the mighty Let Loose. All of which made Gaz very happy. We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
09 Jun 2020 | S03E11 The Orb 'U.F.Orb' | 01:44:41
A seven track, 73 minute long, ambient album you say? And it got to number one in the UK? Well alright then! Chuck a load of drugs in your face and join us in a journey through space on an album where we really didn't know if we'd find anything to talk about [spoilers: we definitely did]. We do chat about a LOAD of other stuff that was going on in the charts at the time as well such as Kyuss, Jimmy Nail and the prevalence of rave tunes involving children's TV themes that seemed to be going on in 1992. Companion Spotify playlist available to listen to here with all the stuff we talk about, and the Orb's website we mention where they sell cannabis seeds FOR SOUVENIR PURPOSES ONLY is here.
20 Apr 2022 | S04E15 Mariah Carey ’Music Box’ | 01:12:00
We confess right at the start of this one that we were not fans of Ms Carey in the early 90s but tried to keep an open mind going into the episode. And it's fair to say that more than once we were very pleasantly surprised; consider some of those words completely eaten. Alongside singing along to some massive power ballads we take the opportunity to talk about other acts such as The Wildhearts, Stone Temple Pilots and The Breeders among others. Check out all of our social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), our Spotify playlist for this episode and our ongoing Podcast Playlist featuring hand-picked songs from each number one album we've talked about so far.
09 Nov 2022 | S04E20 Phil Collins ’Both Sides’ | 01:36:53
Well lookee here - we started this whole podcast about four years ago with a Phil Collins album and here he is again like a bald-headed returning character in the soap opera that is Pop Collaborate & Listen. Can this album live up to the heady heights of his 1990 effort 'But Seriously'? Probably not to be honest. But at least in this episode you also get to hear us chat about MC Ren and Guns & Roses, and you can hear Dave sing along to quite a bit of Onyx. Consider yourselves warned. We also mention a few links that we recommend checking out: Dave's flashy new website where you can find his Edinburgh show ADHDave to watch for free on youtube; and Gaz Jones' music podcast Track1Side1.
31 Mar 2021 | S03E21 Sugar 'Copper Blue' Bonus Episode | 01:16:15
Another bonus for you to wrap up season three - this week we're doing a listener's choice of Sugar's 1992 debut album 'Copper Blue'. Both Dave and Krister remember this from the time but haven't revisited it in many years so it's all very fresh to our ears. Thanks to everyone who has listened along the way this season, we will be back with Season Four as soon as we can manage, seeing what delights 1993 can throw at us. Fingers crossed for some absolute quality, eh? Surely it couldn't be a year which sees number one albums from artists like 2 Unlimited and Cliff Richard, could it? As always, check out our Facebook, Twitter and website for more info and links to various things.
25 Jul 2023 | S05E07 Pink Floyd ’The Division Bell’ | 01:56:53
Sound the Prog Rock Siren, we're back in business with Pink flipping Floyd and their 1994 album 'The Division Bell'. An album which the band thought at the time would be their last - did they try and mix things up for their swansong and put together a record full of upbeat happy tunes to make you laugh and dance? Well, no. This episode also sees us chatting about acts such as Terrorvision, Rollins Band, Salt & Pepa and The Offspring among many many others. As always check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. And you can catch up with our ongoing playlist made up of songs from all of the albums we've covered so far right here.
17 Aug 2021 | S04E06 - Bonus Episode! Monster Magnet ’Superjudge’ | 01:13:50
Time to get spaced out and explore the world of Monster Magnet's 1993 album 'Superjudge' as requested by one of our listeners. Basically he made a big enough donation to the show via our PayPal that we couldn't say no but luckily we didn't actually want to because we both love a bit of Monster Magnet. So indulge us chatting about a load of stoner rock and big weird riffs, psychedelic nonsense and lyrics that run the gamut from having sex with the Andromeda Galaxy to becoming an ape. Nope, not a clue. Normal service will be resumed for our next episode but this one was a lot of fun for us to do, hope you enjoy it as well. As always you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter to see all of our terrible jokes and posts etc etc.
01 Jan 2020 | S02E20 Michael Jackson 'Dangerous' | 02:05:07
Let's get this out of the way at the start - if you don't want to hear a few pretty bad taste jokes as MJ's expense then maybe skip this one. We don't need the hassle. But if you do want to hear two people who genuinely liked the previous Michael Jackson albums discuss his first release of the 90s then step this way! Lots of chat about the new direction that producer Teddy Riley has taken things - for better or for worse? Also some chat about U2's 'Achtung Baby', a comparison of MJ to Megadeth and whether or not the special effects in the 'Black Or White' video still look any good these days. The Spotify companion playlist is available here and everything else is probably linked on www.pclpodcast.com. Go to Itunes and leave us a review by the way!
22 Jan 2020 | S02E22-B: The Best Albums of 1991 part two | 01:05:04
As we close the book on 1991 we run through both of our top five albums of the year, some of which may surprise you, some of which definitely won't. Feel free to agree with us or give us immense amount of grief about our choices via our various social media platforms. But before you do that, enjoy our chat and check out our spotify playlist where we picked one track off each of our album choices from the whole top ten. It is, as you can imagine, a pretty fucking solid playlist. You're also welcome to let us know what your own choices might have been from our album choices - do you agree with our picks? Thank you for listening to our nonsense as we've gone through 1991, we will be back soon to tackle 1992, see you then! www.pclpodcast.com
29 Sep 2020 | S03E13 Mike Oldfield 'Tubular Bells II' | 01:46:57
It was 1992, a time of musical turbulence and experimentation, when new and exciting bands were cutting through the dead weeds of a changing music industry and forever leaving their mark on a brave new world. So what better time for Mike Oldfield to have a number one album with his long-awaited sequel to 1973's original 'Tubular Bells'. We had no idea what to expect from this one, as you'll find out pretty much straight away, but we were definitely interested to see what made it such a big deal upon release. Along the way we also chat about the likes of The Shamen, Brand New Heavies and Skid Row among other people in the charts at the time. You can hear all of the Oldfield album and the rest of the singles we talk about on our companion spotify playlist, there are some ace tracks on there this week for sure. As usual please get in contact on our facebook or twitter to say hi or let us know your thoughts on Tubular Bells in general.
15 Feb 2023 | S05E01 Chaka Demus & Pliers ’Tease Me’ | 01:57:29
Season Five, people! Imagine that if you can: we have survived the albums from 1990-93 relatively unscathed and we're now diving headfirst into 1994 to see what that holds for us. And it appears to hold Chaka Demus & Pliers. We decided that we needed some help in taking this one on so we drafted in Stephen Hill from the Trve.Cvlt.Pop podcast to join us since he had previously espoused his love for some of CD&P's tunes. Massive thanks to him, go and check out his show for more brilliant music chat. Talking about other shows, you can hear some more of Dave talking about his favourite albums of the 90s on the Track1Side1 podcast with Gaz Jones where he was a guest recently. But back to this episode, as well as talking about the album in question we cram in some chat about other stuff like Green Day, Underworld and, erm, K7. It's all go in this first episode of the new season. Check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can get do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
13 Nov 2020 | S03E16A Extra Bonus Episode - Full Interview With Andy Copping about Rage Against The Machine | 00:23:39
Extra bonus content for you lucky people - in our recent episode about Rage Against The Machine's debut album we are lucky enough to talk to Andy Copping, the man behind Download Festival and general rock music guru about his experiences and memories of the album and the band. We included about half of it in the episode for time limit reasons but here is the full thing to expand on some of the areas you'll have heard us talk about in there. You can hit Andy up on his twitter account and keep abreast of Download announcements on their one as well.
21 Sep 2021 | S04E07 David Bowie ‘Black Tie, White Noise‘ | 01:42:03
Hey, remember that time that David Bowie said he wanted to create a new form of melodic house music? Of course you do, don't pretend otherwise. This episode we are looking at his 'Black Tie, White Noise' album from April 1993 and it's definitely pretty hard to categorise. It was hailed as a return to form by some people at the time but does it hold up nearly thirty years after release? In other music news we get to have a chat about acts like LL Cool J, The Fall and Poison among many others but it's realistic to say that the majority of our time is taken up being surprised by the amount of saxophone (and other horns) all over the Bowie album. We also mention the fact that this episode goes out to the memory of the wonderful Phil Jerrod who was a stand-up comic and good friend to Dave who sadly passed far too young just a few weeks back. And to regular listener and friend of the show Mat Davies who similarly left us just recently as well - our hearts go out to friends and family of both of these truly lovely, creative and kind men. As usual you can check all of our social media for stupid pictures and more nonsense, all links available on our website www.pclpodcast.com
12 Jun 2020 | Special Download Festival Episode | 00:27:32
Because no festivals are happening this year Dave and Krister wanted to have a very quick chat about some of their favourite times from previous years at Download watching some of the best rock and metal bands of the 90s. This is just a one-off special, totally fine if you want to skip two middle aged men reminisce about getting drunk in a field and loving live music. Also, this was recorded over Zoom using that audio output so the sound quality is slightly lower than usual. The quality of the chat is its usual rubbishness though, that's not changed.
15 Sep 2020 | S03E12 INXS ’Welcome To Wherever You Are’ | 01:33:10
We are back! After a slight hiatus (details of why are explained in the intro) we've got a new episode for you. Thank you for bearing with us and being so lovely and patient. In this one we're chatting about INXS and their 1992 number one album 'Welcome To Wherever You Are'. Remember that one? Well, fair enough. But how does it fare nearly thirty years after release? Should it be re-evaluated? We shall see. Also prepare yourself for hot discussions about the likes of Ministry, House of Pain and the Flaming Lips. It's like you can almost taste the early 90s just from reading those names. As usual we love to hear from you guys so feel free to hit us up on Facebook, Twitter or on our email. And check out this episode's Spotify playlist with all the stuff we talk about on it. Until next time...
13 Oct 2020 | S03E14 REM 'Automatic For The People' | 02:11:10
Well this is a massive album and deserves a lot of time devoted to it, so we did. Fair warning - there are some subjects touched upon in our discussion that might be a bit too much for some people; the album itself is all about death, mortality, suicide, pain, grief etc and so we talk about our own issues and experiences with such things so if you think this might be a bit too heavy for what is normally quite a jaunty podcast with too many jokes about farts and dicks then we understand if you want to skip it. But there are also a load of stupid things we talk about as well in amongst the more heavy bits. Just so you know.
We do also get the chance to talk about other bands such as The Prodigy, Suede and the Jesus Lizard so that's something to get your teeth into as well.
The companion Spotify playlist has the whole REM album as well as all the chart singles we chat about and our ongoing playlist made up of songs from every number one album we've covered so far can be found here. Please do hit us up on facebook, twitter or instagram to let us know your thoughts or just to give us abuse. Cheers!
14 Apr 2020 | Lockdown 90s Music Quiz 02 | 00:23:06
Here's another of the 90s music pop quizzes we did on our Facebook Live page to keep you all entertained while we're in isolation lockdown - this is the second one we did and we focused more on alternative acts of the 90s this time. There are rounds on Nu-Metal, Britpop, anagrams and general trivia to test your brain. And there is also another brilliant music round courtesy of Chris Green from Tyketto, this time performing big indie and alternative tunes of the 90s in a proper metal style for you to identify. Massive thanks again to him for helping us out. Once again if you prefer to download the quiz as a PDF to do at your leisure or to test your friends then you can do so from our website and you can also download the fiendishly hard picture round that we did on the night which doesn't really work as part of a podcast. Check out our Facebook page and join in with the next quiz, every Friday evening at 8pm GMT. Credit as well to Bensound.com for the wonderfully smooth muzak you can hear running throughout this week's episode - nice!
10 Mar 2021 | S03E20 BONUS EPISODE - Mr Bungle 'Mr Bungle' | 01:24:40
We're back with a very special bonus episode and you can interpret "special" any way you want. At the behest of a podcast listener who donated a far too generous amount of money to our paypal link we are covering an album of his choosing. It's possible he chose this particular one because he is a massive fan and knows that Dave is as well or it's possible that he knows how much Krister was likely to absolutely hate it. Who knows, it's a proper mystery.
Either way we hope you enjoy listening to us discuss this one but since the album is definitely an acquired taste and the episode is easily one of our most self-indulgent ones to date we won't mind if you skim this one or have to give up before the end. Although we'd much prefer if you didn't obviously. Have fun!
14 Feb 2024 | S05E13 The Cranberries 'Everybody Else Is Doing It...' | 01:23:22
We're taking a metaphorical journey to Ireland to dip our toes into the debut album by The Cranberries 'Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We'. A band that both Dave and Krister admit to not liking the majority of what they've heard but then again the majority of what they've heard is the single 'Zombie' so perhaps there's more to The Cranberries "dan dis". As well as pointed digs at Krister's Irishness we also chat about acts like Fun-Da-Mental, Rancid and The Sp!n Doctors. Apologies for that last one. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
16 Dec 2020 | S03E18B Best Albums of 1992 Special - Part Two | 01:23:34
Here's the second part of our rundown of our top ten albums of 1992 for you. Probably not a lot of surprises in here but you simply can't argue with some of these choices - so many great albums! Thank you again to all of you listeners who sent in your own top five lists to us - you can see them all here on our website. And thank you as well to our lovely guest contributors to this episode: Darren who had previously joined us on our Def Leppard episode; Si Sharp from Beat Rehab who was on our Beastie Boys Special; Stephen and Remfry from the brilliant Riot Act podcast; and comedian and host of the We Are History podcast, Angela Barnes. As you will hear on the episode we've put a track (or two) from each of our album choices into a Spotify playlist which is obviously pretty damn wonderful. We hope to have a special Christmas episode out before the end of this year but if you don't hear from us again beforehand, have a brilliant Christmas and New Year!
16 Jul 2024 | S05E18 Oasis 'Definitely Maybe' | 01:50:12
When you're talking about bands that defined 90s music it's hard not to include Oasis which means that simply doing an episode on their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' from 1994 is a minefield because everyone has an opinion on this one, usually either VERY positive or VERY VERY negative. Krister had this album at the time and remembers enjoying it for the most part, Dave has never previously deliberately listened to Oasis in his life but still knows most of the songs on here through mere osmosis. Will either of us end up loving this one by the end of a reassessment? Not completely, no, but we both have songs on here that we really love it turns out. We also talk about bands like Portishead, Manic Street Preachers and, erm, Indie Kylie along the way. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
21 Apr 2020 | S03E08 Carter USM '1992 - The Love Album' | 01:34:01
Strange as it may seem to us nowadays, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine had an actual official number one album back in 1992. Grebo is an oft-overlooked genre from the time: is that for the best or are we unfairly overlooking what it had to offer? With opinions ranging from "not really bothered" to "actively disliked them" between Krister and Dave will this album win them round? We talk about loads more in this episode as well including the likes of En Vogue, R. Kelly and Aphex Twin. You can hear all of the songs we discuss in our companion Spotify playlist and immerse yourself more fully in 90s goodness with our ongoing "best of the albums we've featured" playlist. Links to everything on our website as usual.
03 Aug 2021 | S04E05 Suede 'Suede' | 01:31:55
We are back after a short break to have a look at what the big deal was about Suede's debut, self-titled album which was released in April 1993. Krister remembers really liking those big three first singles while Dave remembers actively hating the band and all they stood for when he was an angry 17 year old. We also get the chance to chat about Tool, David Essex and Jade in the course of the show which must surely be the first time those three have ever been in the same sentence. And we really must thank Stephen and Remfry from the brilliant Riot Act podcast for letting us join them on their 90s One Hit Wonders special episode - we've seen loads of new listeners come on board after hearing us on there so we hope you enjoy what we're doing as well! You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter, listen to this episode's bespoke Spotify playlist with all the songs we talk about on there, check out all previous episodes on our website and as always feel free to contact us via any of the above to say hi or tell us why we're wrong about most everything.
30 Oct 2024 | S05E22 Best Albums of 1994 - Season Five Wrap-up | 02:06:46
It feels like it's taken forever but here we are at the end of season 5, our journey through 1994. And as is now tradition we have put an episode together to discuss what our own personal top ten lists of the best albums released during the year are. After a brief chat about some of the albums that NEARLY made our top tens we then get into it and have a lovely conversation about bands like Portishead, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Senser, NIN, Kyuss and loads of others. We're also very grateful to some of our friends who contributed their thoughts about their favourite albums of 1994 - big love to the wonderful comedians Stephen Grant and Rich Wilson, and Steve & Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop - stay tuned right at the end of the episode to hear their whole conversation about their choices where Steve manages to not mention the Chaka Demus & Pliers album which frankly none of us could have predicted. If you want to check our our playlist with songs from each of our own choices on it then you can find it here. We will be back ASAP with a whole new season of albums to look at as we go through 1995 but until then enjoy this episode and as always please do let us know your own faves from '94 if we totally missed them out.
28 Mar 2023 | S05E03 Enigma ’The Cross Of Changes’ | 01:32:04
Why do bad things happen to good people? Why did two Enigma albums have to get to number one meaning we are duty bound to listen to them? 1994 continues its rollercoaster up and down ride with 'The Cross Of Changes', the second album from new age bastards Enigma. Thankfully we are able to talk about other music that was happening at the time as well such as Therapy, Beck and Low among many others.
04 Mar 2020 | S03E03 Def Leppard 'Adrenalize' | 01:35:01
Do you wanna get rocked? That's what we're all REALLY asking ourselves all the time, isn't it? Well, maybe Def Leppard's 1992 album 'Adrenalize' can provide some answers. For this one we are joined by special guest Darren who is Dave's oldest friend and a massive Lep fan from the 'Hysteria' album days. But what did he think of this follow up? What did Dave and Krister think for that matter? Spotify playlist for this one is here and social media links are all at our website www.pclpodcast.com. I suppose a rock's out of the question?
19 Mar 2025 | S06E03 Radiohead 'The Bends' Bonus Episode | 01:29:18
Only three episodes into Season 6 and we're already doing an off-piste bonus episode. But how could we NOT do one on 'The Bends' by Radiohead considering it's crazy that it was never a number one album. For this one we both admit that we were slightly late to The Bends Party but these days we recognise it for the classic that it is and so while this episode might not be as jocular and funny as we try to make our regular ones, we hope that we make up for it in enthusiasm for the source material. Back with a regular episode as soon as we can, hope you enjoy this special bonus treat.
25 Nov 2020 | S03E17 Bon Jovi 'Keep The Faith' | 01:35:19
It's Bon Jovi's big return after their 80s heyday - Jon Bon Jovi has cut off his big hair and the band has decided to go for a "more mature" sound in this post-grunge world of 1992. Great. Dave was a big fan of these guys in the 80s while Krister was a lot more ambivalent and had never heard this album before listening for the show. But in between talking about Bon Jovi's more grown-up attitude and divergence from their poodle-pomp reputation we get the chance to mention albums by Ice Cube and Dr Dre and singles by the likes of Charles & Eddie, Wrexxx n Effect and U2 among many others. As always, you can listen to this episode's companion playlist featuring the whole Bon Jovi album and all the other songs we chat about on Spotify and hit us up on our Facebook and Twitter if you so fancy.
17 Oct 2023 | S05E10 Erasure ’I Say I Say I Say’ | 01:32:25
We are thoroughly back into our regular episodes after a bumpy, special-riddled journey of recent times. And this one is about Erasure's sixth album 'I Say I Say I Say' from May of 1994. We have already done an Erasure album back in Season 2 and we thought that that record was just ok, maybe this one will be more up our street? Along the way we also chat about Jeru the Damaja, Pearl Jam and, erm, Toad The Wet Sprocket so enjoy those diversions. And as always check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. And you can catch up with our ongoing playlist made up of songs from all of the albums we've covered so far right here.
19 Feb 2025 | S06E02 Elastica 'Elastica' | 02:04:51
One for the 90s indie fans, here's an episode on Elastica's self-titled debut from 1995 which even though it's got 15 songs on it is somehow only a 38 minute long record. That doesn't mean a short podcast though - quite the opposite in fact as we find ourselves with plenty to enjoy and lots to say. Plus an absolute avalanche of other album and single releases to chat about so apologies if those sections aren't your cup of tea, feel free to skip them (although then you'll miss out on thrilling conversation about the likes of Monster Magnet, Morphine and, erm, Scooter). Cheers!
25 Mar 2020 | S03E06 Beastie Boys 'Check Your Head' | 01:40:14
Bonus episode alert - this was never a number one album but it's held in such high regard by both Dave and Krister that we figured it deserved an episode to discuss it. And we got our friend Si Sharp from Beat Rehab in to help us as well since he's a massive fan of it too. So we understand this is a very niche one and won't appeal to everyone, feel free to skip it if you want! But it was lots of fun to record and hopefully we can convince you that this is one of the best albums ever. You can check out more of Si's ramblings and recommendations at Beat.Rehab where he writes about music or whatever comes into his head, and you can also often hear him guest on the brilliant Dancing About Architecture podcast as well. The companion playlist for this episode is available on our Spotify profile but to be honest you could just search for this album as that's all we really chat about. Hope you enjoy it!
11 Apr 2023 | S05E04 Morrissey ’Vauxhall And I’ | 01:51:52
Like a bit of existential misery and complaining with your indie guitar music, do you? Well what a lucky day you're about to have being able to hear us talk about Morrissey's fourth solo album 'Vauxhall And I' from March 1994. Both of us love some Smiths tunes but don't really know any of Moz's solo stuff so we're not sure what this is going to be like going in. But it's a bumper time period for other releases as well so we get to talk about bands like Nailbomb, David Holmes and Pantera among many, many others. Oh, and fucking Doop. As always check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can get do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. And you can catch up with our ongoing playlist made up of songs from all of the albums we've covered so far right here.
01 Apr 2025 | S06E04 Boo Radleys 'Wake Up!' | 01:56:30
We are back into our regular schedule after a brief detour to do a special on Radiohead and so here we are to talk about 'Wake Up!' by the Boo Radleys. Now, we feel it's only fair to say right from the outset that if you're a big fan of the band, and especially this album, then you might not enjoy this episode because it really, really wasn't for us and we are quite forthcoming about that. So feel free to skip it if you fancy, we understand. Luckily alongside the main chat we get the chance to talk about things like Strapping Young Lad, UK hip hop and Clawfinger. Cheers!
04 May 2021 | S04E02B East 17 Addendum Bonus | 00:10:37
Just a quickie here - it was pointed out to us after we released our 'Walthamstow' episode that the version of 'It's Alright' that we talked about (and the one that everyone knows) wasn't the original version that was on the first release of the album. We then listened to the original version and decided it was so terrible that we really should make all of you listen to it as well. So here's ten minutes of us chatting about a really bad song - enjoy! Make sure you check out the full song as well on YouTube. No really, do it.
05 Oct 2021 | S04E08 Cliff Richard ‘The Album‘ | 01:41:35
I'm sorry, for a second there I could have sworn you said that this episode was all about a Cliff Richard album. Wait, what? Really? It actually got to number one in the UK album charts and so we have to listen to it and do a whole show on it? Fucking hell. Yes indeed, brace yourselves because this is actually happening. Songs tinged with Jesus and saxophone solos straight out of 1987 all over the place; let's take a minute to remember that this was whole grunge was taking over the whole world. Although while we mention it, do take the time to check out our saxophone solos quiz from last year if you haven't done so already - it's great fun. Thankfully we do also get the chance to talk about Porno For Pyros, Screaming Trees and Let Loose (about four times) so it's not wall to wall Cliff. As always, give us a follow on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram if you fancy and feel free to get in contact with any thoughts about this or any episode. Check our website www.pclpodcast.com for more links and stuff.
27 Apr 2021 | S04E02 East 17 ’Walthamstow’ | 01:50:39
Get out your stupid hats and prepare to be "sung" at by a load of teenagers from East London. Yes, it's been a while since we've done a full on 'pop' album but here we are with one of the biggest boy bands in the UK in the 90s and their debut album 'Walthamstow'. Containing their hits 'Deep', 'House Of Love' and 'It's Alright' as well as quite a lot of utter nonsense, we dig in to see how this bad boy sounds 30 years after release. It's quite something. But as well as marvelling at how East 17 maintained a career we discuss bands like Dinosaur Jnr and Belly; Dave effuses about one of his all time favourite albums 'Slip' by Quicksand; and Krister reveals that he still has absolutely no idea how to pronounce Einsturzende Neubauten. Check out our ongoing Spotify playlist of our choice of songs from each of the albums we do an episode on (we put three East 17 tunes on here this week if you can believe it - THREE), the standalone playlist for this episode featuring all the tracks we chat about including the singles rundown, follow us on Facebook and/or Twitter for extra stuff and nonsense and head to our website for links to all of the above and more if you need to.
18 Mar 2020 | S03E05 Right Said Fred 'Up' | 01:20:31
We knew it was coming - looming on our timeline like a brash, bald, pop behemoth. And here we are - Right Said Fred's actual debut album. Obviously we knew the singles already but weren't sure what to expect from the rest of it. Who know, maybe it's full of pleasant pop surprises, we shall have to see. We do get to discover the link between Jimi Hendrix, RSF and Taylor Swift though which seems unlikely but is actually true, and we reveal a US alt-rock band that almost took Right Said Fred on tour with them in 1992 until their management pointed out what a dreadful idea that actually was. Check out our companion playlist as always with the full album we discuss and loads of other tunes we talk about, and head to our website for crap memes and links to our various social media.
08 Jan 2020 | S02E21 Hip Hop in 1991 | 01:42:38
What a year it was for hip hop in 1991 - so many massive and great albums being released, the mainstream beckoning and big changes coming to the scene. So we're dedicating a whole episode to looking at what was going on and deciding on what we reckon our favourite albums are from the year. We are joined for this one by a special guest, the brilliant Rob Mulholland - stand up comic, professional northerner and big fan of hip hop. Check out his website to see when he's next coming to a venue near you, send him abuse on Twitter and definitely check out his hour long show 'Too Big To Fail' free to watch on youtube. Do be warned that there's probably even more swearing than usual in this one given that we're playing a load of hip hop tracks, and just the fact that there are three of us instead of two. That's simple swearing mathematics. We've chucked a load of tunes that we talk about into a playlist that you can listen to on Spotify and as usual do check out our social media platforms to get in contact, all links at www.pclpodcast.com
09 May 2023 | S05E05 Nine Inch Nails ’The Downward Spiral’ Bonus Episode | 01:46:45
It's our 100th episode!! Which is mad enough in itself so we figured we should mark the occasion with a bonus episode on a true classic album of the 90s, Nine Inch Nails 'The Downward Spiral'. Dave came into this one already a huge fan of the record but Krister was brand new to a lot of it. Along the way we have a few clips from some old friends and former guests such as Darren from our Def Leppard episode, Cliff from the Devil Times Five horror movie podcast, Niall from The Zeroes podcast, Stephen Hill from Trve.Cvlt.Pop (and our Chaka Demus & Pliers episode where he truly shone) and Si Sharp from Beat Rehab/Nautilus Gin and other general music nerdery. Huge thanks to all of them. Hope you enjoy this episode and thanks to everyone who has listened to any of the previous 99 shows or got in contact with some pithy comments or simply liked one of our shit joke posts on social media. You're the best.
24 Dec 2021 | A Very PCL Christmas! | 00:27:11
Happy Christmas! Although it's all still a bit weird and no one knows what's going to happen in the next few weeks we hope that you're all having as lovely a time as you can under the circumstances. We decided to get together for a short bonus episode and talk some rubbish about Christmas in general, Christmas music, films etc etc and obviously Krister brought along some of the finest festive jokes known to mankind which pleased Dave no end as you'll hear throughout. We'll be back with another proper episode before long but in the meantime have a glass of eggnog and think of us. Cheers!
29 Aug 2023 | S05E08 Blur ’Parklife’ | 02:01:30
If you've ever heard Dave talk about Blur on the podcast before you'll know that he was NOT looking forward to this episode one bit. But rules are rules and so we had to cover it and see what we reckoned - the question is did it change Dave's mind? The answer is pretty much a "no" but with some definite concessions along the way. But apart from hearing Dave rant about Damon you can also hear us chat some nonsense about bands like Biohazard, Tricky and G Love & Special Sauce among many others.
28 Apr 2020 | Lockdown 90s Music Quiz 03 | 00:28:09
Another 90s music quiz for you to play along with - this is a re-recorded version of the live quiz we do on Friday nights on our Facebook page at 8pm GMT so please join us for the next one if you're able, we'd love to have you along. This week we've got questions about 90s novelty hits and all-girl bands as well as general trivia and our wonderful music round courtesy, as usual, of Chris Green from Tyketto who has metalled-up some more 90s pop hits for you to identify. We also have a picture round that you can check out on our website, just name the famous 90s album covers that podcast co-host Waffles The Dog has inserted himself into (big thanks to Jenny for making this round by the way). If you fancy challenging your friends you can download the PDF of the questions and answers from our website as well and see how you fare. Let us know if you enjoyed this one and how you got on, or let us know which ones you didn't get and feel eternally ashamed for not knowing. Credit as well to Bensound.com once again for the wonderfully smooth muzak you can hear running underneath the questions. We shall be back next week (hopefully) with another proper episode so until then stay safe and enjoy the quiz.
29 Nov 2023 | S05E11 Seal II | 01:38:22
We are back, and so is Seal with another self-titled album. After doing Seal 'Seal' in our second season we find ourselves doing Seal 'Seal' in season 5 as well. Has the music changed or progressed? Is this a very different beast to the one that went before? What we did find is that this is up there with the most divided we have been on an album - let us know which way you end up landing. But as well as Seal we do chat some rubbish about Fish from Marillion, the Beastie Boys and, most bizarrely, 2 Live Jews. The 90s were a very strange time indeed.
23 Mar 2022 | S04E13 U2 ’Zooropa’ with special guest Stephen Hill from Riot Act | 02:06:38
What DO you do after releasing 'Achtung Baby' and already going off piste from what you're known for? Well, if you're U2 in 1993 then the answer is you go even more experimental and try new things to see what works. For this episode we have a very special guest in the form of Stephen Hill from Metal Hammer and the Riot Act podcast who is probably the biggest U2 fan we know and agreed to come on and tell us why we're wrong if we say we don't like one of their songs. It was a real treat for us to have this chat with him - go and follow him on Twitter so you can read some of the articles he writes about bands like Tool and Radiohead and make sure you check out the Riot Act Podcast itself to keep yourself up to date with all the new releases worth knowing about. Oh, and most importantly you can hear the Broken Records podcast that they do as well where they try and seek out the worst albums ever made. At least we have an excuse for listening to some of the rubbish we have to do for this podcast. They're doing it for fun. As well as talking about U2 on this episode we also squeeze in some chat about bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, and, er, Spin Doctors. July 1993 was a wild time. You'll find links to all our social media and spotify playlists etc on our website www.pclpodcast.com
25 May 2021 | S04E03 Lenny Kravitz 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' | 01:47:32
THAT RIFF! THAT STYLE! THOSE FLARES! With Lenny Kravitz's 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' we may be checking out an album from 1993 but it's one that was trying to sound like it was from 1970 in the first place so buckle up for double time-travelling. Krister had never heard the whole album before and Dave only had the vaguest of memories of it so we went in pretty blind, hoping for a sea of big guitar rock and Hendrix-style solos all over the place but found something much more calm and reigned-in which was very unexpected.
But we also get to chat about Naughty By Nature, Right Said Fred (and a potential name for a tribute act) and Mark Lanegan. All of which are included on the episode's playlist along with the full Kravitz album. And as usual you can look at our Facebook, Twitter and website for more bits and pieces and subscribe to our ongoing Best Tracks from the Episodes playlist on Spotify to hear all of our favourite picks from each album we've talked about so far.
21 Aug 2024 | S05E20 REM 'Monster' | 02:24:31
Our third REM episode but the first one that we had to delay some recording of because of too much vomiting, which was a treat for Dave. If you've heard our takes on 'Out of Time' and 'Automatic For The People' you'll know that we absolutely loved those but we weren't even a fraction as familiar with this one at all. Also this is an absolute beast of an episode in terms of running time, mainly because of the total deluge of album and single releases within the five week time period in late 1994 that we were looking at so we won't be offended if you skip those sections if those aren't your favourite bits. But if you do skip them you'll miss us talking about the likes of Korn, Shellac, Digable Planets, Refused, Shampoo and obviously East 17. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
30 Jan 2019 | Trailer | 00:01:59
If you're curious as to what this is all about, here you go!
07 Dec 2022 | S04E21 Best Hip Hop Albums of 1993 | 01:00:04
It's time for the first of our End-Of-Season-Four bonus episodes and we're starting with a chat about our favourite hip hop albums that came out during 1993. You can hear selections from all of our picks (except for Gunshot which isn't on Spotify so go and listen to it on YouTube instead) on our companion playlist. Feel free to get in contact with what your own choices would have been, what did we totally miss out? Also please do let us know what your overall top five or top ten albums of 1993 would be as well as we'll be doing our own selection in the next episode and would love to hear your suggestions. Email us at pclmusicpodcast@gmail.com or stick it on our Twitter or Facebook page, whatever is easiest. Cheers!
18 Oct 2022 | S04E19 Take That ’Everything Changes’ | 01:53:38
We're back with a bonafide POP monster in the form of Take That's second album 'Everything Changes' from October of 1993. Quite simply one of the biggest boy bands of the decade and indeed of all time with their breakthrough record - but does it stand up to a fresh listen nearly thirty years down the line? As well as discussing which of the Take That boys is simply dreamy we are able to discuss some other acts and records from the time such as Eazy E, Pearl Jam and the one and only Shaquille O'Neal. We also mention a few links that we recommend checking out: Dave's flashy new website where you can find his Edinburgh show ADHDave to watch for free; Stephen from Riot Act's new podcast Trve.Cvlt.Pop!; and Remfry from Riot Act's new one 3 Is The Magic Number.
19 Dec 2022 | S04E22a Best Albums of 1993 Part One | 00:43:42
On our journey through the number one albums of 1993 we got the chance occasionally to chat about some other records that came out during the year which we were particular fans of and this is our end of season opportunity to expand on those and make a list of our personal top tens. We've split it over two episodes so this is part one, kind of the lower end of our lists. Check it out and see if you agree with our opinions - feel free to let us know on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. We're compiling a playlist of choice songs from all of the albums we talk about as well which can be found on our Spotify. Part two coming in a couple of days!
15 Jan 2020 | S02E22-A: The Best Albums of 1991 part one | 01:15:57
Since we have now gone through every number one album of 1991 it's time to take a look back through all the other records that came out and choose what we reckon were our favourite albums released that year. This is the first half of our conversation, the second part will come out next week. Agree with our choices so far? Hit us up on Twitter or Facebook to let us know. Think you know what's going to be in the top five next week? I mean, yeah, you can probably guess about half of them for sure. Feel free to let us know what your top ten would be as well if you haven't already.
10 Mar 2020 | S03E04 Annie Lennox 'Diva' | 01:17:56
Annie Lennox's debut solo album and one that neither of us really knew much about apart from the big singles. And to be honest we remember not thinking much of those at the time as well but that was nearly 30 years ago so perhaps we are being too harsh and a new listen will prove teenage us wrong. We also have brief chats about Curtis Stigers, ZZ Top and SL2, all included on this episode's Spotify playlist alongside the full 'Diva' album and a couple of other bits that we mention this week. Check out our website www.pclpodcast.com for links to all our social media and all that stuff.
05 Apr 2022 | S04E14 UB40 ’Promises & Lies’ | 01:19:42
We've got halfway through the number one albums of 1993 and have come across this beast which was at the top spot for seven weeks that summer. Is that because it's totally amazing and the British public were right to keep on buying it? Or is it because they did an Elvis cover that was lightweight enough to get on the radio constantly? It's a mystery. Thankfully alongside having to discuss this record we get to talk about other acts such as Clutch, Cypress Hill and, er, Snow. We'd also like to take the opportunity to plug some of our previous podcast guests who have new podcasts out themselves at the minute: Sean Mcloughlin who joined us for our ABBA special has a new one up and running with fellow comedian Jonny Pelham called Failing Better and their guest on the current episode is Ed Gamble; and Rob Mulholland who joined us for our Hip Hop in 1991 special is going great guns with his new podcast Dead Men Talking alongside co-host Freddy Quinne (warning - this one is not for the easily offended). So do go and check them out if they sound up your street.
27 May 2020 | Lockdown 90s Music Quiz 04 | 00:29:50
Another 90s music quiz for you to play along with - this is a re-recorded version of the live quiz we do on Friday nights on our Facebook page at 8pm GMT so please join us for the next one if you're able, we'd love to have you along. This week we've got questions about 90s film soundtracks and name-the-next-album-in-the-sequence as well as general trivia and our wonderful music round courtesy, as usual, of Chris Green from Tyketto who has metalled-up some more 90s pop hits for you to identify. Check out his youtube channel and see how stupidly talented he is as he shows you how to be a better guitarist. We also have a picture round that you can check out, just name the famous 90s videos that podcast co-host Waffles The Dog has inserted himself into (big thanks to Jenny for making this round by the way).
06 Jun 2023 | S05E06 Soundgarden ’Superunknown’ Bonus Episode | 01:28:17
In the second of our mid-1994 sidesteps away from the actual number one albums we decided to do a full episode on Soundgarden's massive breakthrough album 'Superunknown' which was released on the same day as last episode's NIN 'The Downward Spiral'. We're both big fans of this record but came to it from different angles back in the day and so are interested to see if the whole thing stands up 30 years later. Hope you enjoy our chat about this one, do let us know if you agree or not and what your favourite/least favourite songs on the album are to see if we're all totally in sync on this one - you can get do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Back to normal from the next episode!
25 Jun 2024 | S05E17 Prince 'Come' | 01:47:44
Hey, stop that sniggering at the back. Just because a Prince album is called 'Come' doesn't mean that it's all smutty and full of filth. Oh wait no, that's exactly what it means. Recommence sniggering if you wish. If you want to hear Prince croon about oral sex and orgasms then have we got a treat for you in this episode. Conversely if you want to hear Krister find it excruciatingly embarrassing having to listen to Prince's sexy talk then you're also in luck. Thankfully we're also able to chat about acts such as Jeff Buckley, Gravediggaz and Orbital so it's not all wall to wall smut. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
21 Dec 2022 | S04E22b Best Albums of 1993 PartTwo | 01:10:06
The second, and concluding, rundown of our own personal favourite albums from 1993 to round off Season Four with a festive bang. We also managed to rope in some fellow nerds from other podcasts to drop in with their choices so you'll find some of those clips peppered throughout the show. Make sure you listen after the closing credits to hear Steve and Sam from True Cult Pop's FULL chat that they sent over by the way as opposed to the hastily-edited-for-time-constraints version that is in the main episode. Massive thanks as well to Gaz Jones from Track One, Side One, Andrew Bird from A Funny Taste In Music and Cliff Smogo from Devil Times Five Horror Podcast for making time for us. The playlist that we made alongside these Best Of '93 shows can be found here with our picks of songs from each of the albums we talk about. If we didn't put whatever your choice of song would have been on there it's probably Dave's fault so get angry with him. You can get hold of either of us or just leave some feedback on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. So that's it for 1993 and Season Four - a season of highs and lows, from Nirvana to Cliff Richard and plenty in between. Thank you to everyone who listened and we'll be back before long with a journey through 1994!
23 Dec 2020 | S03E19 ABBA 'Gold' | 01:42:52
Merry Christmas! Ho Ho Ho! Etc! Welcome to our festive themed special all about ABBA 'Gold', their Greatest Hits which was released in 1992 and became one of the best selling albums of all time. We've got a very special guest helping us out on this one in the form of comedian Sean McLoughlin who is a big ABBA fan, as is Krister. However, Dave fucking hates ABBA. Like really hates them. So we decided to do this special and take on the forms of Christmas joybringers, trying to convince Dave that he's just being an ABBA grinch and should let them into his life at this time of goodwill and wonder. How successful we were in that task, you'll find out soon enough. Massive thanks once again to Sean for joining us on this one, it was an absolute treat to have him on, he's genuinely one of the funniest comics around today so do check him out when live gigs start happening again. In the meantime you can hear his comedy album 'Support Act' on Spotify and watch his hour long special 'Hail Mary' on Youtube. Honestly, we cannot say enough good things about this guy and we hope you enjoy him on this episode as much as we did recording it with him. Oh, and go ahead and follow him on Twitter as well, why not. There's a playlist of all the ABBA songs as well as the various other cover version, remixes and top ten singles we chat about on Spotify for you to check out. Or why not enjoy some Christmas holiday listening with our ongoing Best Of The 90s (Albums That We Have To Listen To) Playlist which is actually pretty damn good. Stick it on shuffle while eating leftover sprouts and trying not to doze off on the sofa. We'll be back with Season 4 as soon as we can in the new year but until then happy Christmas from all of us as PCL. Cheers!
19 Sep 2023 | S05E09 Senser ’Stacked Up’ Bonus Episode | 01:36:58
Yes, yes, ANOTHER diversion from our regular journey through the 90s, this time an episode all about Senser's debut album 'Stacked Up' from May 1994. This is an album that we both have a lot of love for, one that we played over and over when it came out and so we were keen to check it out again to see how it stands up after nearly 30 years. We have contributions from some of our podcast buddies peppered throughout this as well so thank you to Stephen and Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop, Si from Beat Rehab and Niall from The Zeroes for sharing their memories of this record.
05 May 2020 | S03E09 Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark | 01:45:10
Hang on to your denim jackets everyone, it's time to get in the pit and headbang along to some proper heavy flipping metal. Iron Maiden's 1992 one album is under the microscope this week and Krister and Dave have VERY differing views on the band as will be pretty instantly clear. How does this one sound nearly 30 years after release? Does heavy metal ever really age? We also get the chance to talk about Suede, Ugly Kid Joe and Life of Agony as well as playing a happy hardcore version of 'Fear Of The Dark' which actually exists. Mental. Check out that version as well as all the other stuff we talk about on our weekly episode companion playlist and get in contact via whichever of our social media you fancy with any comments, all links are on our website. Also head to our facebook page on Fridays at 8pm GMT during the lockdown to take part in our regular 90s music quiz. Until then, enjoy the episode and don't take anything that Krister says about Iron Maiden too personally!
06 Aug 2024 | S05E19 Us Not Talking About Eric Clapton | 00:48:43
So here's what happened. We scheduled an episode on Eric Clapton's 'From The Cradle' album from 1994, made a big old list of all the other records we were going to discuss during the episode that got released at the same time but then realised that the Clapton record was just a collection of blues cover versions, not his own songs. And the rules we have say that we don't need to cover that sort of nonsense and we therefore chose to skip it. However, there were too many albums and singles which we planned to chat about to just bump into the next episode because the list of releases for THAT one is also pretty massive and so we came to the decision to make a mini/bonus episode which was just us doing the albums and singles sections. And frankly we know that for some of our listeners that's all the really want anyway. So here it is, a filler stopgap episode before we come back into the proper timeline with the REM one. If you do want to hear the Eric Clapton album (and all of the singles we discuss herein) then you can always head to this episode's companion playlist and knock yourself out there. Cheers!
13 Mar 2024 | S05E14 Ace of Base 'Happy Nation' | 01:32:18
Who's up for a bit of Swedish reggae-pop then? Who knew that was going to be a big genre in the early 90s? Apparently Ace of Base did and they gave us quite a lot of it on this, their debut* album, which got to number one in 1994. As well as discussing the merits of The Sign and All That She Wants we chat some rubbish about Suicidal Tendencies, Kyuss and the Reverend Horton Heat among many others. We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! If you'd like to listen to the Unsung Podcast episode that we mention all about the Nazi rumours behind the band then check it out here - it's a really interesting and well put together bit of research. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
*sort of debut but repackaged and rejigged. Don't be a pedant.
20 May 2020 | S03E10 Michael Ball and Faith No More | 01:46:42
We tried. We really did. We tried to bring you a full episode talking about Michael Ball's self-titled debut album but we just could not do it. For one thing, it's not on Spotify so we had to actually create a youtube playlist, and not all the songs are even on there so it was incomplete at best. And secondly, it's a Michael Ball album so we really, really didn't want to. Which means that we spend the bulk of the podcast talking about Faith No More's album 'Angel Dust' which came out around the same time and only got to number 2 in the charts which just doesn't seem fair. So that's what you're getting, hope you enjoy it. Leave us some comments on our social media as usual, we'd love to hear what you think about either of the above records, and also due to public demand we have now got a button on the website for donations which you're very welcome to use if you like all the stuff we're putting out and fancy chucking us the price of a pint. It's very very much appreciated you wonderful people.
08 Jun 2021 | S04E04 Depeche Mode 'Songs of Faith & Devotion' | 02:01:29
In this episode we get to talk about Depeche Mode AGAIN which is always fun - after our special on 'Violator' in season one how will this fare in comparison? We have invited a very special guest to discuss it with us, the wonderful comedian/podcaster/DJ/general music nerd Rich Wilson. As you'll be able to tell, we had a lot of fun recording this one. As well as general Depeche Mode chatter we also cover bands like Butthole Surfers, Stone Temple Pilots and the one and only Snow. As usual we've put together a playlist of all the songs on the episode's main album and whatever else we play along the way which can be found here; our Facebook page is here; and our Twitter page is here. But more importantly go and follow Rich Wilson on Twitter or Facebook, check out his podcasts Insane In The Men Brain and Insane In The Fem Brain where he talks to other comedians, musicians and people he just finds interesting about all aspects of mental health - loads of various links here (including his Twitch channel and radio show. He gets about a bit).
19 Jul 2022 | S04E17 Nirvana ’In Utero’ | 02:01:06
We've been looking forward to this one for a while - if you've already heard our episode on Nevermind then you'll know we're fans of Nirvana anyway and it was a treat to go back and revisit this album in full. Be prepared for a lot of shameless gushing from some fanboys. But you can also hear us gush about acts like Souls of Mischief, Sepultura and Prince among others. Playlist of everything we chat about on this episode can be found here.
15 Mar 2023 | S05E02 Tori Amos ’Under The Pink’ | 01:37:00
After last episode's adventure into pop-dancehall we're doing a pretty extreme 180 into the world of Tori Amos and her second solo album 'Under The Pink' from February 1994. Will Dave decide that these songs could also be improved with some toasting from the man Chaka D? We shall find out. We also managed to squeeze in some chat about Reel II Reel ft. The Mad Stuntman, Deep Forest (at which point Krister manages to get Star Trek very wrong) and we both try for the life of us to remember who Wendy Moten is and why she had a top ten single. The episode also features various contributions from Niall of The Zeroes Podcast (whose 1990 Music episode we managed to squeeze ourselves onto) so thank you to him.
03 Sep 2024 | S05E21 Nirvana 'Unplugged In New York' with guest Niall Bakewell | 02:18:28
For our last "proper" episode in season five before we get into our 1994 end of year round-ups we return to a band that we've covered a couple of times before. And while you could argue that we realistically shouldn't be covering this record because it's not a studio album and is half full of previously released tunes, well... shut up. We're very obviously too big of fanboys not to do this one as well. And to help us out with discussing such a big record we are joined by the brilliant Niall Bakewell from The Zeroes Podcast. Full disclosure: we recorded this episode a good while ago and out of sequence with the rest of this season because Niall had to make the trip over to us from Northern Ireland and he's a very busy man so we happily worked around his schedule. There are also plenty of other bands and acts that we talked about in this one as well such as Pearl Jam, Stone Roses, Sheryl Crow and, erm, Jimmy Nail. Hmmm. Along the way we do touch on some more serious subjects as you can probably imagine so this one isn't necessarily as light-hearted as other episodes but there are also some of Dave's worst jokes to date to try and balance it out. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
24 Jan 2024 | S05E12 2 Unlimited 'Real Things' | 01:25:23
How in the merry hell did 2 Unlimited get ANOTHER number one album in the UK? We thought we were done with these guys after our episode in Season 4 but here we are again apparently. So is this one a drastic departure away from their hyper-cheesy pop rave previous albums? Or course not. What are you, mad? Enjoy our journey through another record of Eurohouse ridiculousness and be thankful you don't have to listen to this record as many times as we did. Thankfully we also get the chance to chat about other acts like Stone Temple Pilots, Bruce Dickinson and Helmet so it's not all bad. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
26 Feb 2020 | S03E02 Bruce Springsteen 'Human Touch' | 01:26:22
The Boss is back with a long awaited album. In fact he's back with two released on the same day, but we're just looking at the one that got to number on in March 1992, Human Touch. Neither Dave nor Krister knew this one at all, or much Bruce Springsteen in general if truth be told outside of the big hits. Will this be the one that converts them to megafans? Outside of Bruce we talk about a LOT of other fantastic music that was being released in this time period by acts such as Body Count, PJ Harvey and Tool. Check out our weekly Spotify companion playlist with lots of the good stuff on there. And links to various other stuff and social media are all at our website www.pclpodcast.com
12 Jan 2022 | S04E11 2 Unlimited ’No Limits’ | 01:24:32
We knew it was coming, it was inescapable. We weren't looking forward to it because surely we'll run out of things to say about what is probably going to be the same song 14 times in a row? Well it turns out we didn't run out of things to say and despite the source material this one turned out pretty well if we do say so ourselves. Inbetween marvelling at Ray Slijngaard's quite astonishing rapping we take the opportunity to chat about some other bands like Gunshot, Fugazi and the Spin Doctors. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
06 Aug 2019 | S02E01 Enigma 'MCMXC AD' | 01:23:33
We are back after our break with a new season and a new year's worth of number one albums to listen to. 1991 kicks off with Enigma's debut album and it definitely makes a big impression on Dave and Krister as you will hear. You may also hear that the sound quality has improved a bit and we no longer sound like we're recording in a bucket in a field. Or at the very least, a better quality bucket. Hurrah for new equipment. As well as discussing Enigma and why you'd want to listen to monks chanting over a breakbeat we also chat about Gang Starr, Robert Palmer and C&C Music Factory. As usual we've put together a playlist of all the songs (including the Enigma album) that we talk about for you to listen to here. It's good to be back!
20 Aug 2019 | S02E03 Jesus Jones 'Doubt' | 02:16:11
Welcome to episode three of our new season and enjoy taking a step back in terms of audio quality for one week because we recorded this one out of sequence, before we upgraded our microphones. Hurray! But ignore that if you can as we are joined by our first ever GUEST on the podcast, Si Sharp, to delve into the guts of Jesus Jones' album 'Doubt' from February 1991. Si is an expert on many musical topics and genres but has a special place in his heart for this particular sort of indie stuff, it's what he grew up on and loved dearly. But are Dave and Krister going to be fans as well? Dave is notoriously adverse to "indie" stuff while Krister is usually all over that shit. Will this revisit to the album be a success? Along the way we also get the chance to chat about Soho, EMF, Rick Astley and Krister's granny. Sorry about this, gran. Be sure to check out www.pclpodcast.com for more info and links to our various social media and go to Beat Rehab to read more of Si's opinions and lists. As usual we've made a Spotify playlist of all the songs we talk about for you to listen to here - https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e03playlist
31 Jan 2019 | S01E01 Phil Collins 'But Seriously' | 01:02:32
Our first podcast and what an album to start with. Phil Collins' 'But Seriously' was the first number one of the 90s and with an album of this magnitude there is plenty to talk about. But is it actually any good? Did he manage to finally end the homeless problem with 'Another Day In Paradise'? Why are there so many horns on this record? Check out the playlist we made of all the songs discussed on this podcast at https://tinyurl.com/PCL101playlist
31 Jan 2019 | S01E02 The Christians 'Colour' | 01:14:22
For our second podcast we dive into UK soul/pop act The Christians' sophomore album. Be warned, this episode is not the best sound quality as one side of our conversation ended up as a corrupted file. We've done our best to rescue it though and it's definitely worth bearing with us. Contains plenty of swearing by the way. And lots of unnecessary solos (on the record, not by us).
19 Feb 2019 | S01E03 Sinead O'Connor 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' | 01:24:33
For episode three Dave and Krister dig into Sinead O'Connor's breakthrough album 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' (you know, the one with Nothing Compares 2 U on it) while also chatting about people like Michael Bolton and Guru Josh along the way. Also marvel at our ability to blithely confuse the Notting Hillbillies with the Travelling Wilburys because we're idiots. Listen along with our spotify playlist for this episode: https://tinyurl.com/yyhloetn
26 Feb 2019 | S01E04 Depeche Mode 'Violator' (and a bit of Bowie) | 01:39:44
In our fourth episode we go a bit off piste - the next number one album in our journey is ChangesBowie which is obviously a best of, so we make the decision to chat only briefly about that but concentrate mainly on the number two album of the week which is 'Violator' by Depeche Mode. Which means this one is as sweary as usual but with added drugs and sex references. Check out our companion playlist for this episode with all of the tracks played or talked about: https://tinyurl.com/y2blo232
05 Mar 2019 | S01E05 Fleetwood Mac 'Behind The Mask' (and some Carpenters too) | 01:38:55
Throughout April and May of 1990 The Carpenters found themselves at number one for a staggering seven weeks with a Best Of compilation. But for one week in the middle of it Fleetwood Mac nicked the top spot off them with 'Behind The Mask' so that's what we discuss in this episode. We do briefly talk about the Carpenters as well, and Jason Donovan and Alannah Myles for good measure. A playlist of all the songs we talk about is available to listen to here - https://tinyurl.com/PCL005playlist
12 Mar 2019 | S01E06 Soul II Soul 'Volume 2 - 1990: A New Decade' | 01:28:27
We're halfway through 1990 already and Soul II Soul's second album, 'Vol 2 - 1990: A New Decade" is number one in the UK charts. Dave and Krister both remember this one fondly from their youth but haven't listened to it in many years - does it stand up to scrutiny? Does Jazzie B sound like he should be in Flight Of The Concords? Whose celebrity sex tape would you least want to have to watch? All of these questions come up in some way, shape or form throughout this week's episode for which we can only apologise. We also take time to discuss Sydney Youngblood's apparent beef with Soul II Soul, various football-based songs released in 1990 and discover a previously unknown (to us) link between Soul II Soul and Alanis Morrissette. As usual we've made a playlist with all the songs we talk about for you to listen to at your leisure, enjoy it here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL006playlist
19 Mar 2019 | S01E07 New Kids On The Block 'Step By Step' (and a touch of Pavarotti) | 01:44:54
We knew that Pavarotti was on its way so we very briefly chat about his Essential Collection but let's forget that and concentrate on the total gift that is NKOTB's 'Step By Step' album. This is by far the most fun we've had to date, there is just so much ridiculous nonsense to discuss on here. And trust us, some of the best stuff is in the final third as well. We very much encourage you to listen to some of the utter cack on here via our usual companion playlist with all of the songs we mention on the show - http://tinyurl.com/PCL007playlist
26 Mar 2019 | S01E08 Elton John 'Sleeping With The Past' | 01:36:14
Krister loves a bit of classic Elton. Dave thinks he has a voice like a malfunctioning foghorn. What will we make of this album? We also manage to talk about NWA, Madonna's 'Hanky Panky' and an absolutely astonishing Elton John cover of 'Give Peace A Chance' along the way. Also Krister has a bagful of Elton John related jokes with him and each one is worst than the last. You've been warned. Plus we find out if Dave really can remember all the words to 'Turtle Power' nearly 30 years on. As usual you can listen to a playlist of all the songs we discuss and play here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL008playlist
02 Apr 2019 | S01E09 Prince 'Graffiti Bridge' | 01:38:59
Our ninth episode takes us into August of 1990 and Prince is at number one for one week only with 'Graffiti Bridge', his soundtrack to his godawful film of the same name. We get songs about dancing, songs about sex, songs about a dead father, more sex stuff, one about an actual bridge, and some more sex. Dave is an absolutely massive Prince fan so what will he make of this having not heard it in many years? Krister doesn't give much of a shit either way; will the purple sex goblin impress him with his kitten heels and falsetto vocals? We also manage to fit in some chat about Betty Boo, how to pronounce 'Tower of Power' correctly, and whether or not Dave can identify a Bombalurina track from just the intro. Playlist of songs listened to and talked about available as usual on our Spotify page, link to this one here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL009playlist
09 Apr 2019 | S01E10 George Michael 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1' (and a very brief mention of the Three Tenors) | 01:17:39
Once again we find ourselves having to acknowledge a record featuring Pavarotti because the 3 Tenors album was number one for five weeks but we skip pretty much immediately past it and focus on George Michael's re-defining 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1'. Neither of us have heard this whole album before and we agreed that we were looking forward to it - does it hold up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later? Along the way we manage to fit in discussion of why Britain is ashamed of its heavy metal roots, why the Thunderstruck drinking game is the best of all song-based drinking games and why so many 1990 number one albums have one ill-judged reggae song on them. Playlist with everything we talk about (except the 3 Tenors) available here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL010playlist . Website with all the info - www.pclpodcast.com
16 Apr 2019 | S01E11 The Charlatans' 'Some Friendly' | 01:33:08
Into October of 1990 and we've hit upon an album that Krister used to love and remembers very fondly. Will it be as good as he remembers? Dave doesn't really give a shit one way or the other as this sort of early 90s indie passed him right by and at quite some distance.
We discuss Tim Burgess' bizarre lyrics, the use of Hammond organs in music generally, and how embarrassing it would be to sustain an injury in a fight at a Status Quo concert. We also get the chance to play and talk about the likes of Maria McKee, MC Hammer and, god help us all, Scooter.
All of the songs we talk about are in our weekly playlist as usual, listen along with us here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL011playlist. Check out www.pclpodcast.com for all our social media and contact details.
23 Apr 2019 | S01E12 Paul Simon 'The Rhythm Of The Saints' | 01:42:41
We're into October of 1990 and in fact are at the last non-compilation album number one of the year. Paul Simon's follow-up to Graceland was much anticipated, and it obviously got to number one since we're talking about it here, but is it any good? Do you have to like "world music" to get it? Does it have pan pipes in it? All questions answered within.
At the same time as this was riding high the charts are full of songs by the likes of Happy Mondays, Belinda Carlisle and Public Enemy so we also chat about them for a bit as you can imagine. Full Spotify playlist of songs to listen along to available at http://tinyurl.com/PCL012playlist.

30 Apr 2019 | S01E13 Very Best Of Elton John | 01:28:11
We know, we know, we said we weren't going to do any compilations or Best Ofs but just listen to the podcast and we explain our reasoning. Basically it comes down to "it's our podcast and we'll do what we want" to be honest. But it's a megamassivebig album to take a look at, this is a LOT of Elton John right here. Krister is still a fan of classic Elton, Dave is Elton-curious so let's see where he ends up after hearing a double album of greatest hits. Along the way we talk briefly about things like NWA, Kim Appleby and Stevie Wonder. And Cliff Richard but let's skim past that if we can. As always, here's a big old Spotify playlist of all the songs we chat about in this week's episode so that you can listen to them at your leisure - http://tinyurl.com/PCL013playlist
08 May 2019 | S01E14 Madonna 'The Immaculate Collection' | 01:55:11
The second of our "cheat" episodes from 1990, or "bonus podcasts" if you're being generous, this Madonna compilation is one of Dave's favourite ever albums which will become very obvious as we go through. Will he go so far as to defend the likes of La Isla Bonita or Cherish? You'll have to listen to find out. As well as discussing the merits of Madonna we also chat about EMF, Methods of Mayhem (!) and why you should never have sex with your idols. All the songs we talk about are in a handy playlist for you as always - http://tinyurl.com/PCL014playlist. Enjoy! |
