It's a brand new season of PCL, you wonderful people! A reason for celebration and joy all over the world except for the fact that our first episode is apparently on a Celine Dion album that first came out in 1993. How is this the case? It's the one with 'Power Of Love' and 'Think Twice' on it, two monster power ballads which are a weakness of ours so perhaps this will actually be up our streets?

There is also a record breaking amount of album and single releases that we get the chance to talk about because Celine's album was at number for multiple weeks at the start of 1995 so you can hear us chat about the likes of Leftfield, Quicksand, PJ Harvey and for some reason, PJ & Duncan. And we also bring up the topic of Jimmy Nail about three times so sorry about that.

It turns out that this was the Pet Shop Boys' first, and only, number one album which was a surprise to both of us considering how big they were in the latter half of the 1980s but neither of us had actually heard a PSB's album in full before so we went into this with pretty high hopes that there would be some gems inside. Just how many gems we did uncover remains to be seen.

But we also chatted about other classic acts such as Afghan Whigs, Duff McKagan and Dave gets to give us a very level-headed opinion on Damon Albarn and Blur. Fun times. Good crikey, it's Season 3 of Pop, Collaborate & Listen! And what better way to start off our journey through 1992's number one albums than Wet Wet Wet? Well, probably loads of ways to be honest but we don't make the rules. We just listen to what the pop charts dictate and then whinge about it for an hour or so each week.

Neither Dave nor Krister had ever heard this whole album before because of course not so it really was a journey into the unknown. Obviously we were familiar with the big 80s hits that the band had released and with their seemingly neverending cover version of 'Love Is All Around' but this album was unfamiliar territory. Did it convert us to a newfound love of Pellow & Co? We shall have to see.

During our conversation we look at an absolute ton of other releases that came out in the six week period at the start of 1992, there are some absolute treasures that we chat about like KISS, Daisy Chainsaw and Sultans of Ping just for starters. Almost halfway through 1993 now and after a few episodes of more leftfield (let's just forget that we ever talked about Cliff Richard) records we've come to a big pop album in the shape of 'janet.' by Janet Jackson. Neither of us have ever heard the full album before but since seven of the songs were released as singles surely we must know quite a lot of it already, right? Right?

Along the way we also discuss things like Anthrax, Snow and Guru's Jazzamatazz. Nice.

We're back with a proper episode! Yes - we, two men in our 40s, worked out how to use Zoom and managed to record this episode while sitting in our pants in our respective bedrooms. And it turned out surprisingly well if we do say so ourselves. Another album that neither of us had actually ever heard before but obviously we know plenty of Cure songs so we were looking forward to this one.

Along the way we discuss L7, how Dave was almost a goth in sixth form and the Sisters of Mercy.

Some albums are deserving of the term 'gamechanger' and here's a massive one from 1994. The Prodigy's second album 'Music For The Jilted Generation' introduced so many people to dance music who might not previously have given it a second thought so we were very excited to do an episode on it. So excited in fact that we brought a guest in to help us out so huge thanks to Cliff Barnes from the Devil Times Five Horror Movie Podcast who is a Prodigy uber-fan as well with loads of insights.

Join us in this episode for a look at one of the most influential bands of the 80s and their only album from the 90s. After the whole Manchester scene had exploded around them, with baggy and shoegaze coming to the fore and then fading out again, with their label Factory Records and their club The Hacienda becoming the absolute epitomes of cool, could New Order find their place in a new decade?

Along the way we also chat about things like Credit To The Nation, Rancid and Terrorvision to name but a few.

This week we are listening to and chatting about Prince's 'Love Symbol' album which Dave has vague memories of from back in 1992 and Krister has definitely never heard before in his life. And because it's Prince, and you can't tell him what to do, there are 18 tracks on the album across about 50 different genres. So plenty to get stuck into, alongside the whole thing about it being a rock opera soundtrack to another flopped Prince movie.

We do also get the chance to talk about things like Madonna, Temple of The Dog and that awful rave version of the Tetris music so there's something to look forward to. Yes yes yes, we know that this was never a number one UK album and therefore it doesn't fit our remit, but our podcast, our rules. Both Dave and Krister are such big fans of this album that we decided to do a full bonus episode on it to give it the props it deserves.

And not only that but we were lucky enough to persuade the legendary man behind Download Festival, Andy Copping to come and talk to us about his recollections of the album coming out back in 1992 and all the times he's put the band on from his days of booking gigs at Nottingham Rock City up to getting them to headline Download in 2010. We've included about half of the full chat in this episode but we'll put the whole thing out by itself in a couple of days so that you can hear all of Andy's thoughts and stories.

WHAT THE HECK? Yes indeed, it's the first episode of Season 4! We've finished with the music of 1992 and are casting it off like a bootleg T-shirt that you bought outside the gig but then lost all of its backprint and one of its sleeves after just one wash.

And here we are looking down the barrel of a very exciting 1993 with so many amazing bands and new genres appearing almost weekly, a brand new world. So obviously we're starting this journey off with Little Angels and their album 'Jam' which it turns out, no really, got to number one in January 1993. I know.

It's a band and a genre that both of us thoroughly ignored at the time so neither of us had any clue what this was going to sound like - well I mean, that's not strictly true but you know what we mean.

But along the way we do get to chat about other bands like Apache Indian, Jesus Jones and The The so that's always a treat. All of these acts, as well as the entire Little Angels album, are included on this episode's companion playlist.

Thirty years after their debut album it turns out that the Rolling Stones are still capable of getting to number one in the UK with a new record. The 90s were fucking weird. Is this actually a good album though, should the Stones still have bothered putting out new music to add to their legacy? Opinions are divided.

For this episode we are joined by the wonderful Gaz Jones from the Trve.Cvlt.Pop (and previously Track One, Side One) podcast who is a big Stones fan and actually bought this record in the week it came out back in 1994. Big big thanks again to him for coming to join us on this one.

It was 1992, a time of musical turbulence and experimentation, when new and exciting bands were cutting through the dead weeds of a changing music industry and forever leaving their mark on a brave new world. So what better time for Mike Oldfield to have a number one album with his long-awaited sequel to 1973's original 'Tubular Bells'.

We had no idea what to expect from this one, as you'll find out pretty much straight away, but we were definitely interested to see what made it such a big deal upon release. Along the way we also chat about the likes of The Shamen, Brand New Heavies and Skid Row among other people in the charts at the time.

Hey, remember that time that David Bowie said he wanted to create a new form of melodic house music? Of course you do, don't pretend otherwise. This episode we are looking at his 'Black Tie, White Noise' album from April 1993 and it's definitely pretty hard to categorise. It was hailed as a return to form by some people at the time but does it hold up nearly thirty years after release?

In other music news we get to have a chat about acts like LL Cool J, The Fall and Poison among many others but it's realistic to say that the majority of our time is taken up being surprised by the amount of saxophone (and other horns) all over the Bowie album.

We also mention the fact that this episode goes out to the memory of the wonderful Phil Jerrod who was a stand-up comic and good friend to Dave who sadly passed far too young just a few weeks back. And to regular listener and friend of the show Mat Davies who similarly left us just recently as well - our hearts go out to friends and family of both of these truly lovely, creative and kind men.

Because no festivals are happening this year Dave and Krister wanted to have a very quick chat about some of their favourite times from previous years at Download watching some of the best rock and metal bands of the 90s. This is just a one-off special, totally fine if you want to skip two middle aged men reminisce about getting drunk in a field and loving live music.

Also, this was recorded over Zoom using that audio output so the sound quality is slightly lower than usual. The quality of the chat is its usual rubbishness though, that's not changed.

Well this is a massive album and deserves a lot of time devoted to it, so we did. Fair warning - there are some subjects touched upon in our discussion that might be a bit too much for some people; the album itself is all about death, mortality, suicide, pain, grief etc and so we talk about our own issues and experiences with such things so if you think this might be a bit too heavy for what is normally quite a jaunty podcast with too many jokes about farts and dicks then we understand if you want to skip it. But there are also a load of stupid things we talk about as well in amongst the more heavy bits. Just so you know.

A band that both Dave and Krister admit to not liking the majority of what they've heard but then again the majority of what they've heard is the single 'Zombie' so perhaps there's more to The Cranberries "dan dis".

When you're talking about bands that defined 90s music it's hard not to include Oasis which means that simply doing an episode on their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' from 1994 is a minefield because everyone has an opinion on this one, usually either VERY positive or VERY VERY negative.

Krister had this album at the time and remembers enjoying it for the most part, Dave has never previously deliberately listened to Oasis in his life but still knows most of the songs on here through mere osmosis. Will either of us end up loving this one by the end of a reassessment? Not completely, no, but we both have songs on here that we really love it turns out.

We also talk about bands like Portishead, Manic Street Preachers and, erm, Indie Kylie along the way.

Strange as it may seem to us nowadays, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine had an actual official number one album back in 1992. Grebo is an oft-overlooked genre from the time: is that for the best or are we unfairly overlooking what it had to offer? With opinions ranging from "not really bothered" to "actively disliked them" between Krister and Dave will this album win them round?

We talk about loads more in this episode as well including the likes of En Vogue, R. Kelly and Aphex Twin. We are back after a short break to have a look at what the big deal was about Suede's debut, self-titled album which was released in April 1993. Krister remembers really liking those big three first singles while Dave remembers actively hating the band and all they stood for when he was an angry 17 year old.

We also get the chance to chat about Tool, David Essex and Jade in the course of the show which must surely be the first time those three have ever been in the same sentence.

It feels like it's taken forever but here we are at the end of season 5, our journey through 1994. And as is now tradition we have put an episode together to discuss what our own personal top ten lists of the best albums released during the year are.

After a brief chat about some of the albums that NEARLY made our top tens we then get into it and have a lovely conversation about bands like Portishead, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Senser, NIN, Kyuss and loads of others.

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why did two Enigma albums have to get to number one meaning we are duty bound to listen to them? 1994 continues its rollercoaster up and down ride with 'The Cross Of Changes', the second album from new age bastards Enigma.

For this one we are joined by special guest Darren who is Dave's oldest friend and a massive Lep fan from the 'Hysteria' album days. But what did he think of this follow up? Only three episodes into Season 6 and we're already doing an off-piste bonus episode. But how could we NOT do one on 'The Bends' by Radiohead considering it's crazy that it was never a number one album.

For this one we both admit that we were slightly late to The Bends Party but these days we recognise it for the classic that it is and so while this episode might not be as jocular and funny as we try to make our regular ones, we hope that we make up for it in enthusiasm for the source material.

It's Bon Jovi's big return after their 80s heyday - Jon Bon Jovi has cut off his big hair and the band has decided to go for a "more mature" sound in this post-grunge world of 1992. Great. Dave was a big fan of these guys in the 80s while Krister was a lot more ambivalent and had never heard this album before listening for the show. 

But in between talking about Bon Jovi's more grown-up attitude and divergence from their poodle-pomp reputation we get the chance to mention albums by Ice Cube and Dr Dre and singles by the likes of Charles & Eddie, Wrexxx n Effect and U2 among many others.

Bonus episode alert - this was never a number one album but it's held in such high regard by both Dave and Krister that we figured it deserved an episode to discuss it. But it was lots of fun to record and hopefully we can convince you that this is one of the best albums ever.

Both of us love some Smiths tunes but don't really know any of Moz's solo stuff so we're not sure what this is going to be like going in.

But it's a bumper time period for other releases as well so we get to talk about bands like Nailbomb, David Holmes and Pantera among many, many others. Oh, and fucking Doop.

Just a quickie here - it was pointed out to us after we released our 'Walthamstow' episode that the version of 'It's Alright' that we talked about (and the one that everyone knows) wasn't the original version that was on the first release of the album. We then listened to the original version and decided it was so terrible that we really should make all of you listen to it as well. I'm sorry, for a second there I could have sworn you said that this episode was all about a Cliff Richard album. Wait, what? Really? It actually got to number one in the UK album charts and so we have to listen to it and do a whole show on it? Fucking hell.

Yes indeed, brace yourselves because this is actually happening. Songs tinged with Jesus and saxophone solos straight out of 1987 all over the place; let's take a minute to remember that this was whole grunge was taking over the whole world. Get out your stupid hats and prepare to be "sung" at by a load of teenagers from East London. Yes, it's been a while since we've done a full on 'pop' album but here we are with one of the biggest boy bands in the UK in the 90s and their debut album 'Walthamstow'. Containing their hits 'Deep', 'House Of Love' and 'It's Alright' as well as quite a lot of utter nonsense, we dig in to see how this bad boy sounds 30 years after release. It's quite something.

But as well as marvelling at how East 17 maintained a career we discuss bands like Dinosaur Jnr and Belly; Dave effuses about one of his all time favourite albums 'Slip' by Quicksand; and Krister reveals that he still has absolutely no idea how to pronounce Einsturzende Neubauten.

Obviously we knew the singles already but weren't sure what to expect from the rest of it. Who know, maybe it's full of pleasant pop surprises, we shall have to see.

We do get to discover the link between Jimi Hendrix, RSF and Taylor Swift though which seems unlikely but is actually true, and we reveal a US alt-rock band that almost took Right Said Fred on tour with them in 1992 until their management pointed out what a dreadful idea that actually was.

We are back, and so is Seal with another self-titled album. After doing Seal 'Seal' in our second season we find ourselves doing Seal 'Seal' in season 5 as well. Has the music changed or progressed? Is this a very different beast to the one that went before? What we did find is that this is up there with the most divided we have been on an album - let us know which way you end up landing.

But as well as Seal we do chat some rubbish about Fish from Marillion, the Beastie Boys and, most bizarrely, 2 Live Jews. The 90s were a very strange time indeed.

What DO you do after releasing 'Achtung Baby' and already going off piste from what you're known for? Well, if you're U2 in 1993 then the answer is you go even more experimental and try new things to see what works. 

For this episode we have a very special guest in the form of Stephen Hill from Metal Hammer and the Riot Act podcast who is probably the biggest U2 fan we know and agreed to come on and tell us why we're wrong if we say we don't like one of their songs. THAT RIFF! THAT STYLE! THOSE FLARES! With Lenny Kravitz's 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' we may be checking out an album from 1993 but it's one that was trying to sound like it was from 1970 in the first place so buckle up for double time-travelling. Krister had never heard the whole album before and Dave only had the vaguest of memories of it so we went in pretty blind, hoping for a sea of big guitar rock and Hendrix-style solos all over the place but found something much more calm and reigned-in which was very unexpected.

But we also get to chat about Naughty By Nature, Right Said Fred (and a potential name for a tribute act) and Mark Lanegan. All of which are included on the episode's playlist along with the full Kravitz album. Our third REM episode but the first one that we had to delay some recording of because of too much vomiting, which was a treat for Dave. Also this is an absolute beast of an episode in terms of running time, mainly because of the total deluge of album and single releases within the five week time period in late 1994 that we were looking at so we won't be offended if you skip those sections if those aren't your favourite bits. We're back with a bonafide POP monster in the form of Take That's second album 'Everything Changes' from October of 1993. Quite simply one of the biggest boy bands of the decade and indeed of all time with their breakthrough record - but does it stand up to a fresh listen nearly thirty years down the line?

As well as discussing which of the Take That boys is simply dreamy we are able to discuss some other acts and records from the time such as Eazy E, Pearl Jam and the one and only Shaquille O'Neal.

Annie Lennox's debut solo album and one that neither of us really knew much about apart from the big singles. And to be honest we remember not thinking much of those at the time as well but that was nearly 30 years ago so perhaps we are being too harsh and a new listen will prove teenage us wrong.

Is that because it's totally amazing and the British public were right to keep on buying it? Or is it because they did an Elvis cover that was lightweight enough to get on the radio constantly? In the second of our mid-1994 sidesteps away from the actual number one albums we decided to do a full episode on Soundgarden's massive breakthrough album 'Superunknown' which was released on the same day as last episode's NIN 'The Downward Spiral'.

We're both big fans of this record but came to it from different angles back in the day and so are interested to see if the whole thing stands up 30 years later. Merry Christmas! Ho Ho Ho! Etc!  Welcome to our festive themed special all about ABBA 'Gold', their Greatest Hits which was released in 1992 and became one of the best selling albums of all time. We've got a very special guest helping us out on this one in the form of comedian Sean McLoughlin who is a big ABBA fan, as is Krister. However, Dave fucking hates ABBA. Like really hates them. So we decided to do this special and take on the forms of Christmas joybringers, trying to convince Dave that he's just being an ABBA grinch and should let them into his life at this time of goodwill and wonder. How successful we were in that task, you'll find out soon enough.

Massive thanks once again to Sean for joining us on this one, it was an absolute treat to have him on, he's genuinely one of the funniest comics around today so do check him out when live gigs start happening again. Yes, yes, ANOTHER diversion from our regular journey through the 90s, this time an episode all about Senser's debut album 'Stacked Up' from May 1994. This is an album that we both have a lot of love for, one that we played over and over when it came out and so we were keen to check it out again to see how it stands up after nearly 30 years.

We have contributions from some of our podcast buddies peppered throughout this as well so thank you to Stephen and Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop, Si from Beat Rehab and Niall from The Zeroes for sharing their memories of this record.

Hang on to your denim jackets everyone, it's time to get in the pit and headbang along to some proper heavy flipping metal. Iron Maiden's 1992 one album is under the microscope this week and Krister and Dave have VERY differing views on the band as will be pretty instantly clear. How does this one sound nearly 30 years after release? Does heavy metal ever really age?

We also get the chance to talk about Suede, Ugly Kid Joe and Life of Agony as well as playing a happy hardcore version of 'Fear Of The Dark' which actually exists. Mental.

So here's what happened. We scheduled an episode on Eric Clapton's 'From The Cradle' album from 1994, made a big old list of all the other records we were going to discuss during the episode that got released at the same time but then realised that the Clapton record was just a collection of blues cover versions, not his own songs. And the rules we have say that we don't need to cover that sort of nonsense and we therefore chose to skip it.

However, there were too many albums and singles which we planned to chat about to just bump into the next episode because the list of releases for THAT one is also pretty massive and so we came to the decision to make a mini/bonus episode which was just us doing the albums and singles sections. And frankly we know that for some of our listeners that's all the really want anyway. So here it is, a filler stopgap episode before we come back into the proper timeline with the REM one.

Who's up for a bit of Swedish reggae-pop then? Who knew that was going to be a big genre in the early 90s? Apparently Ace of Base did and they gave us quite a lot of it on this, their debut* album, which got to number one in 1994.

As well as discussing the merits of The Sign and All That She Wants we chat some rubbish about Suicidal Tendencies, Kyuss and the Reverend Horton Heat among many others.

We tried. We really did. We tried to bring you a full episode talking about Michael Ball's self-titled debut album but we just could not do it. For one thing, it's not on Spotify so we had to actually create a youtube playlist, and not all the songs are even on there so it was incomplete at best. And secondly, it's a Michael Ball album so we really, really didn't want to.

Which means that we spend the bulk of the podcast talking about Faith No More's album 'Angel Dust' which came out around the same time and only got to number 2 in the charts which just doesn't seem fair. So that's what you're getting, hope you enjoy it.

After last episode's adventure into pop-dancehall we're doing a pretty extreme 180 into the world of Tori Amos and her second solo album 'Under The Pink' from February 1994. Will Dave decide that these songs could also be improved with some toasting from the man Chaka D? We shall find out.

We also managed to squeeze in some chat about Reel II Reel ft. The Mad Stuntman, Deep Forest (at which point Krister manages to get Star Trek very wrong) and we both try for the life of us to remember who Wendy Moten is and why she had a top ten single.

How in the merry hell did 2 Unlimited get ANOTHER number one album in the UK? We thought we were done with these guys after our episode in Season 4 but here we are again apparently.

So is this one a drastic departure away from their hyper-cheesy pop rave previous albums? Or course not. What are you, mad? Enjoy our journey through another record of Eurohouse ridiculousness and be thankful you don't have to listen to this record as many times as we did.

The Boss is back with a long awaited album. In fact he's back with two released on the same day, but we're just looking at the one that got to number on in March 1992, Human Touch. Neither Dave nor Krister knew this one at all, or much Bruce Springsteen in general if truth be told outside of the big hits. Will this be the one that converts them to megafans?

We are back after our break with a new season and a new year's worth of number one albums to listen to. 1991 kicks off with Enigma's debut album and it definitely makes a big impression on Dave and Krister as you will hear. You may also hear that the sound quality has improved a bit and we no longer sound like we're recording in a bucket in a field. Or at the very least, a better quality bucket. Our first podcast and what an album to start with. Phil Collins' 'But Seriously' was the first number one of the 90s and with an album of this magnitude there is plenty to talk about. For our second podcast we dive into UK soul/pop act The Christians' sophomore album. Be warned, this episode is not the best sound quality as one side of our conversation ended up as a corrupted file. We've done our best to rescue it though and it's definitely worth bearing with us. Throughout April and May of 1990 The Carpenters found themselves at number one for a staggering seven weeks with a Best Of compilation. But for one week in the middle of it Fleetwood Mac nicked the top spot off them with 'Behind The Mask' so that's what we discuss in this episode. We're halfway through 1990 already and Soul II Soul's second album, 'Vol 2 - 1990: A New Decade" is number one in the UK charts. Dave and Krister both remember this one fondly from their youth but haven't listened to it in many years - does it stand up to scrutiny? Does Jazzie B sound like he should be in Flight Of The Concords? Whose celebrity sex tape would you least want to have to watch? Our ninth episode takes us into August of 1990 and Prince is at number one for one week only with 'Graffiti Bridge', his soundtrack to his godawful film of the same name. We get songs about dancing, songs about sex, songs about a dead father, more sex stuff, one about an actual bridge, and some more sex.

Dave is an absolutely massive Prince fan so what will he make of this having not heard it in many years? Krister doesn't give much of a shit either way; will the purple sex goblin impress him with his kitten heels and falsetto vocals?

Neither of us have heard this whole album before and we agreed that we were looking forward to it - does it hold up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later?
