253 - I Had to Say NO to Private Practice with Kade Anderson
00:53:19
Saying NO to working in private practice is not what Kade Anderson had planned when he graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2020, but that's exactly what he decided to do. Instead, he now works for Plena Healthcare as a mobile Podiatrist in aged care and absolutely loves it. Based on what others had said, he initially had apprehensions about working in aged care, but for him, it is a perfect fit and gives him the work-life balance he was after.
Before podiatry, Kade had careers in Real Estate & Pathology, which meant he was slightly older than the average graduate. He did apply for multiple positions in private practice, but by the end of most interviews, he had already worked out he didn't want to work for them and that he wasn't a good fit.
"It was easy to see through all the BS they had placed in their job adverts".
Are you looking for a Podiatry Business Coach who thinks differently and has a proven track record of helping podiatrists excel in business? If you are, please email me and let's chat to see if we're a good fit. You've got nothing to lose.
Unlike most business coaches, I only work with podiatrists.

153 - Audio Marketing for Podiatrists with Tyson Franklin
00:16:13
If you haven’t considered using audio as part of your marketing strategy, now is the perfect time to get started while still being underutilised by most podiatry professionals.
The purpose of my Audio Marketing workshops is to show podiatrists how to use audio for marketing in their podiatry businesses and why it will help them stand out from all the other podiatrists in their area that do not know how to use audio effectively.
When it comes to creating online content, you have three options available to you.
Written Content (Blogs, FAQ’s and Articles)
Visual (Video, photos and Infographics)
Audio (So many options available)
Audio marketing has been around for a long time; just think of radio; people have a favourite radio station and a favourite radio announcer. Because they've heard their voice repeatedly, they start to create an emotional connection with them.
"You can also create an emotional connection with your patients and potential patients".

147 - Six Email Newsletter Tips to Increase Engagement
00:12:59
In my opinion, email newsletters are one of the best ways to stay connected to your patients and also one of the cheapest ways to share your marketing message with your patients.
In this solo episode, I discuss:
Open rates and click-through rates.
Why engagement rates mean more than open rates.
Why I decided to produce a newsletter three times per week.
Why it's a great marketing tool.
Don't use click-bait.
Six Newsletter Tips:
Keep it focused – have a purpose for doing the newsletter.
Don’t overcomplicate it, instead keep it simple.
Add community news; it shows your connected.
Share third-party content – Wine and rum reviews and what other local businesses doing in your area.
Trending topics – what’s hot right now, especially in sport.
Be Consistency – Same time each week or month. Some patients will look forward to your content.

038 - Dr Tea Nguyen Life Changes & Practice Ownership
00:35:08
Dr Tea Nguyen owns Pacific Point Podiatry in Santa Cruz, California and has a special interest in diabetic limb salvage. She opened her solo practice in August 2018, which has a revived her love for podiatry.
She never planned on owning her own podiatry business, but after falling pregnant her employer didn't respond favourably to her needs, so after having her daughter Vylet she was given very little choice but to work for herself.
'Having a child is not like having a pet. There's a lot more forward-thinking required".
On this episode we discuss:
How she fell into her practice
Positive changes after having a child
Her passion for diabetic foot care
Seeing a need and filling a gap in the market
Being an anti-micromanager: you've got to let people make decisions and learn from their errors.
"What do you want to learn? If it does not come to you, you need to go and search for the information yourself".
BIGGEST surprise having own business
Tea was surprised by how much she enjoys having her own practice and how happy it has made her. As an employee, she struggled to get out of bed in the morning, but as a business owner, this is no longer the case.
"I only know what I know and I don’t know what I don’t know, so I never have a problem telling a patient to get a second opinion".
Final Tip
If you’re in a situation that is not in your favour, you’ll find renewed purpose by opening your own business.
Steph Cooper is from Western Australia and she is using the knowledge gained from her podiatry degree to help educate future health professionals in a fun and engaging way.Her website The Comical Anatomist is making anatomy fun through whimsical illustrations caricaturing the human body.
Steph always enjoyed art at school and enjoyed drawing for fun, but her new passion was ignited after attending a Pixar workshop.
On this episode we discuss:
Being commissioned by a local Orthopaedic Surgeon for three specific drawings for his surgery.
Knee Arthroscopy
Total Hip Replacement
Total Knee Replacement
We all learn differently and why using Ebooks are a great way to help students with learning anatomy.

080 - BRAIN 4 FEET - You Need To THINK
00:40:02
What makes this podcast episode really special is my guest is from Spain and wants to remain anonymous. He wants his work and ideas to do the talking for him, not his name.
I know some marketing professionals would tell you this goes against everything you're supposed to do, but after you listen to this episode you'll get a better understanding as to why this works for Eugene, aka. Dr Brain (not his real names)
If you only apply what you learn at university, you will miss a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. When the patient is sitting in front of you, ask if what you've learnt applies, if not try something different.
Explain Your Treatment Using Logic
Always explain to the patient WHY you’re choosing a particular treatment plan; don’t just do it without an explanation.
If you make a logical decision for your treatment and you explain it to the patient, and it does not work, the patient is going to be far more forgiving because they were in on the plan.
Saying, 'I'm doing it this way because this what I learnt at university' is not a logical reason for choosing a treatment plan.
Explaining your logic will also allow you the ability to change your reasoning, and patients will accept this.
Failures Lead To Success
Experience and a large number of ongoing failures over many years will lead to a successful podiatry career.
"At university were taught failure is bad, but exams do not evaluate your true knowledge, they only evaluate your memory."
If you have any questions about this episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can connect with Eugene via his Instagram page Brain_4_Feet.

If you own a podiatry business and if you trade under a business name, you need to protect it with a trademark before someone else takes it. Please don't say I did not warn you.
Protecting your business name is essential, which is why I wanted to have Donna Patane on the podcast. Donna is a lawyer and registered Trademarks Attorney and an expert in Intellectual Property and all things business law in the digital age.
Last year Donna left big law to start her own niche firm focusing on trademarks, IP, confidentiality, privacy, technology and commercialisation deals...and making it all FUN. You can reach out to Donna at me@donnapatane.com.au.
In this episode, we discuss:
Four different registration types:
Domains - first in best dressed.
Company Names
Business Names - are there to protect the consumer, not the business owner.
Trademarks - This is the penthouse and gives you exclusive rights.
Identifying the BAD GUY?
Searching via ATMOS Australia or internationally with WIPO Global Brand Database.
Understanding the terms:
Substantially Identical
Deceptively Similar
Inherently Distinctive
Who owns the trademark? (Company or personal)
Why Google Reviews are being left for the wrong businesses.
Social media law and protection in the digital world?
Using the Way Back Machine website to look at old websites
Copywrite law (photographs and written content)
Ignorance is no defence.
Final Tip
THINK BIG; you’re on the internet. Trademarks are not just for Apple and Google, so look at the register and protect your name.

189 - Podiatry & Physio Synergy with Luke & Lauren Bertram
00:43:18
Luke and Lauren Bertram are the co-owners of Physiopod, Podiatry & Physiotherapy Geelong. Luke is a podiatrist, and his wife Lauren is a physiotherapist, and together they have created a professional working synergy based on open communication and ongoing education.
They both agree they have learnt a tremendous amount from each other, which has led to improved patient treatment outcomes.
In this episode, we discuss:
Their working history: Luke spent several years in the UK while Lauren worked with the Australian Winter Olympic Team.
Booking the patients in for the right practitioner.
The Collective Body Consult, it's brilliant.
Having a genuine interest in each other professions has made them better communicators with their patients because they ask better questions.
Ankle ROM and Incontinence.
The difference between Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary patient care. They are not the same.
How they marketed their services together.
Developing relationships and opening lines of communication will increase your referrals.
Final Tip
If you're working with a physiotherapist, make them aware of what you like to treat or have a particular interest in. You may find it's an area they don't want to treat, and they may be unaware you can help in this area.

061 - Trevor Prior Making Connections Through Your Career
00:56:05
On my office wall at home, I have a quote that says, "The next connection you make could be the one that changes your life", and my guest today Trevor Prior is a master when it comes to making and maintaining meaningful relationships. And he does it both in and out of the podiatry profession.
Trevor openly admits that podiatry was not his first choice, even though both his parents were Chiropodists. Still, once he understood the potential of this profession, he ran with it and has taken his career far beyond his initial expectations.
Today we discuss:
The early days on biomechanics and developing his bio skills by doing.
How he went down the surgery route
Building relationships with US podiatrists
Creating patterns in your learning, especially things you often say and do.
Different people come to education at various times
"Just cause you haven't passed an exam doesn't mean you're no good at the subject. When you love it enough, you'll do the work until you get it".
Attending McDonalds University before the London Olympics
The importance of maintaining the connections you make throughout your career.
Seeing the world because of good connections
How to make initial connections when you're visiting an area.
Final Tips
Anatomy, anatomy, Anatomy. You can't make a diagnosis without knowing your anatomy. Without a diagnosis how can you treat someone
The basis of what we do, irrespective of your personality, is if you're an excellent clinician, then you will be successful. Still, you can't be an excellent clinician if you don't do a proper examination, come up with a diagnosis, and then give them the best evidence-based care you can.
From a podiatry perspective, enjoy it, make contacts around the world and go and visit people.

129 - Dr Nick Fuller Interval Weight Loss
01:00:04
Dr Nick Fuller is a globally recognised obesity expert from the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has degrees in exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics, and a doctorate in obesity and weight management.
He is the resident obesity expert on Channel 9’s Today Show and is the author of three best-selling books on the Interval Weight Loss program.
In this episode, we discuss:
Main contributors to the obesity epidemic.
Some people diet themselves heavier.
Barriers to long-term weight-loss success.
Your body fights back to gain weight.
Evidence-based tips to use with the patient for long-term weight-loss.
Eating from big to small.
Keto diets and intermittent fasting make bold claims but cannot back it up with science.
The six principles of the interval weight loss plan:
You can't fight evolution.
Reach for nature first
Full rainbow
Use chopsticks
Choose to move
No blue light after twilight
Television Wants Visual Attention
When you watch a weight loss program on television, the show's goal is to gain visual attention by showing dramatic weight loss and body transformations in quite a short period of time.
Dr Nick Fuller says these shows have got it all wrong, and most people who lose a sizable amount of weight will more than likely put in all back on again, plus a little bit more.
Your body will fight back, and it will win.
Final Tip
You have the ability to educate your patients, friends and colleagues. And when they are educated, they will feel informed and empowered.

00:39:13
If you're new to marketing, this book, This is Marketing by Seth Godin, is not for you, but if you know you love marketing and you've enjoyed Seth's other books, then you're going to love it.
To be honest, it's not an easy book to read, but we guarantee that if you give this book the time and effort it deserves, you will be wiser for the experience. (Reviewed by Tyson E. Franklin and Carly O’Donoghue from Stepping Out Podiatry).

152 - Young, Poor & Single with Dr James Kent
00:49:55
Dr James Kent is a Native Texan and the owner of East Texas Foot & Ankle Centres. He believes if you want to have a successful podiatry business, the earlier you start, the better, and there are also three key ingredients: young, poor, and single.
When you're young, you have endless energy. When you're poor, there's only one way up, and if you're single, you have time on your side and fewer commitments.
In this episode, we discuss:
Having good mentors.
The benefits of being young, poor and single.
Why not everyone should work for themselves.
Finding what makes you happy.
Goal setting.
Why you need to be constantly planning and adjusting things as you go.
No harm in lofty goals, and it's okay if you don't make it.
Podiatry can be positive or negative, and it’s all up to you to decide which it will be.
"Most people that work hard also do well in business".
Using Youtube
Dr James Kent has created a very successful Youtube channel, Tyler Foot Clinic, and he uses it to promote his podiatry business; when people ask him, James, what do you do, he can direct them to his YouTube channel.
Currently, his channel has over 12,000 subscribers. Using YouTube allows his patients to see behind the scenes of his business, helping them get to know, like, and trust him.
If you have any questions about this episode, one-on-one coaching or any of my group coaching programs, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and we can arrange a quick ZOOM call.
114 - Dr Rimi Statkus Australian Podiatrist Does DPM Program
00:40:34
Have you ever considered moving to the USA and doing the DPM program? If you have, it's not for the faint-hearted as my guest will explain.
Dr Rimi Statkus received his Bachelor of Podiatry in 2006 from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Upon graduation, he moved to Hobart, Tasmania focusing on sports medicine and diabetic limb salvage.
He did this for over 6 years before deciding to move to the US to do the DPM program and advance his surgical skills.
In 2016, he completed his Podiatric Medical degree at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, before moving to Chicago to complete his surgical residency at Rush University Medical Center.
My guest today is Tina Rainville from Ontario, Canada, and on this episode, we talk about living and working in remote Northern Ontario. The weather conditions can be extremely harsh during winter, sometimes dropping to minus fifty degrees Celsius (-58 F), which is hard to imagine.
Living in such a remote area, where many patients of her patients are travelling hours to receive treatment, has taught Tina the benefits of running an efficient clinic. She currently owns and operates Rainville Health with her husband Patrick who is also a Podiatrist.
On this episode we discuss:
Why Chiropody is used in Ontario and not Podiatry.
Common foot problems seen in cold climates
Foot injuries related to ice-skating, snow shovelling, kicking ice and designing orthotics for Ice Hockey
Outreach Diabetic Clinics
Why treatment must be made convenient for your patients
The benefits of running an efficient clinic.
5-LEVEL TREATMENT SYSTEM
The 5-Level Treatment System is one of the best treatment systems/ideas I have heard of in years. Patients feet are giving a ranking from one to five, and this ranking system helps determine their fees they, and who should provide the treatment.
For example, patients scoring four or five will be treated by the podiatrist, whereas the Footcare Nurse may treat patients with a one to three scores.
Patients are rewarded for looking after their feet, and this is an excellent motivator for long-term patient compliance and better foot health.
Parting Advice
Be the Podiatrist in your clinic and stop doing everything else. Delegate all the tasks you should not be doing. By maximising your efficiency, you can see more clients, and this also empowers your team.
Every successful podiatrist has an excellent foundation in biomechanics, it's that simple, and this two-day workshop is going to be jam-packed with useful biomechanical information you can apply immediately in your business and with your patients.
In addition to having excellent biomechanical skills, it's equally important to know how to market these skills. You can have the most advanced biomechanical equipment and have acquired biomechanical skills far beyond any of your competitors, but without a well thought out marketing strategy, it will, unfortunately, go unnoticed.
If you enjoyed this podcast, it would put a big smile on my face if you left a review on iTunes or your favourite podcast platform.

Joseph Frenkel is the owner of Heel Me Podiatry & Wound Care, St Kilda, Victoria. He is a La Trobe University Graduate and completed his Master of Science with a specialty in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair at Cardiff University, and his Professional Diploma of Dermatology at Bond University.
If you've never looked at wound care as an exciting topic or area of interest in podiatry, I think you may change your mind after listening to this particular episode.
On this episode we discuss:
Had a passion for wound care, even as a student
Almost burning out after five years by not following his passion.
The daily ritual of routine nail care, orthotics and ingrown toenails were making him brain dead.
Just cutting toenails felt like a waste of his passion and knowledge, but he is not saying this area of podiatry is not essential.
His big reason to start more study was to re-energise his career, he wanted to be doing something he loved.
Studying at Cardiff University: He knew from day one that this was were he needed to be and wound care was what he was supposed to be doing. He also met a fantastic group of health professionals from different professions with the same interests and passion.
Adding a sub-specialty adds variety to your workload and is a stepping stop to other opportunities.
Podiatric Dermatology
"What got me excited about wound care was the ability to affect change. It has a quite exciting immediacy".
The difference between what we learn about wound care as an undergrad compared to doing a postgrad course.
Ability to think critically
The undergrad course is just a knowledge dump
The postgrad course gives you broader knowledge and hells you make quicker decisions in regards to referrals.
For example, not all wounds are not wounds (Venous Eczema)
The benefits of good referrals between health practitioners
"If you do what you love, it creates opportunities, creates business and it creates energy".
When you share knowledge, it's like a boomerang it comes back to you.
Marketing Doesn't Mean You're Selling Out As A Podiatrist
Marketing is an extension of you. If people don't know about you-you cannot help them, and best of all, you have complete autonomy over how you sell yourself. Marketing professionally or unprofessionally, the choice us yours.
You need to know what you like and what you don't like and then focus on the areas you want.
It's crucial to establish your identity. Not just on who you are, but also what you want to do. Always do what you like and build around this. It's not about having multiple clinics.
The fastest and most efficient way to grow your podiatry business is by using a business coach or mentor. There are many coaching programs currently available, but in my opinion, most are very beige and non-specific.
Please email me. I'd love to be able to help you where I can.

222 - Practice Resilience with Emily Ball
00:52:14
Emily Ball is the Founder of Active Step Foot & Ankle Clinic Ltd, Hampshire UK, which she started in 2013. Over eight years, she developed a great, profitable business; however, it took an immediate downturn following the shock diagnosis of leukaemia in her 3-year-old in November 2021.
Because Emily was forced to step away entirely from her practice, her business experienced the devastating impact of the absence of leadership on her business.
Emily was quick to learn that there is a big difference between business coaching and business leadership.
It's important for your team to come to you with plans and solutions, instead of only coming to you with problems. That's when you know you've developed true leaders.

193 - Joe Keain Transitioning from Employee to Business Owner
00:38:36
Joe Keain is a co-owner of PodFit Podiatry in Adelaide, South Australia. In the episode, we discuss his transition from being an employee to becoming a business owner in partnership with his former employer.
PodFit Podiatry was not Joe's first employer. He initially worked for a podiatry business providing home care services. After 12-18 months, Joe was ready to leave the podiatry profession, but that all changed when he obtained employment with a business that challenged, inspired and excited him.
We also discuss:
Losing MSK skills.
Enjoyment being part of a team.
How he asked to become a part-owner in the business.
The 12-month transition to business ownership.
The different mindset of an employee compared to an employer.
Leading by example and not cutting corners.
Tip for Employees - Employers, notice if you're doing well and if you're not doing well. You've got to be supportive and add value to the team. Work hard and make sure you do the one-percenters.
Tip for Employers - Don't be afraid to put trust in others and let somebody else into your business.
Also, anyone that leaves a review will go into the weekly draw to win a 45-Minute one-on-one session with me to talk about your career, business or anything else. The topic is yours to choose.

144 - Dr Jesse Green Learning from Other Professions
00:52:13
If you're receiving all your business education and inspiration from within the podiatry profession, you could be missing out on some great opportunities. This episode is all about looking outside the podiatry profession and learning from other professions, businesses and industries.
Dr Jesse Green is also the owner of one of the most successful dental coaching companies in Australia, the Savvy Dentist, so his knowledge in all aspects of business is highly regarded and sort after.
In this episode, we discuss:
Learning from other professions and why.
Why most health businesses are very similar.
Asking the question, "how can I make that relevant to me, and how can I be different to everyone else"?
What does a VIP service look like?
Facebook Groups
On Facebook, every profession will have multiple Facebook groups, and you'll find most of them are saying the same thing and giving the same advice. Very few step outside what is expected, and over time they become very vanilla.
Is Your Business Talk-Worthy?
What do you do that makes people talk about your business when they leave? Is there something about your business that is unique or different?
When patients are asked about their day, will their visit with you be talk-worthy?
Love & Hate
When you visit other businesses, pay attention to what you love and what do you hate. With what you love, can you make it work in your business and with what you hate, make sure you're not doing this yourself.
Disneyland
If you're going to look outside your industry, look at organisations that are very successful at what they do, such as Disneyland.
If you're a little apprehensive about making a change, that's normal. It takes courage to make the changes you know you need to make.
But, you can always change back if it doesn't work for you. Changes are never set in concrete.
"A good idea at the wrong time is still a bad idea" - Dr Jesse Green
Know Your WHY
It will help if you keep reminding yourself why you're doing what you do because it can be easy to get bogged down in the day to day grind and lose sight of this.
The power of WHY - It’s the fuel that keeps you going
Final Tip:
Always be looking around you and observe what you like and what you don’t like and keep asking. "how could I apply that in my business"?

011 - Nick Knight We All Benefit By Working Together
00:35:09
Nick Knight is the owner of NK Sports Podiatry based in the south of England. His business focus is on rehabilitation, gait analysis and orthoses, and he is on a mission to help the podiatry profession grow. Nick believes that all podiatrists benefit when they work together, not in opposition to one another.
On this episode we discuss:
4:10 - His journey into podiatry. Initially, he was headed towards a military career, then physiotherapy, only because he did not know what a podiatrist was, but as soon as he did, podiatry was always going to be his career.
7:12 - From day one Nick knew he wanted to go into the sports and musculoskeletal aspects of podiatry
9:30 - Being involved in the 2012 Para-Olympics lead to his first job in a private clinic with Trevor Prior.
12:25 - Being a sports person is not about your age, it's about being active. NK Sports Podiatry motto, "Get Active, Stay Active."
14:20 - Your business name is important, but the brand that you attach to it is far more critical.
15:12 - Get out to sporting events and offer your services. This is the best way to learn and to be seen. To improve your education use your holidays and visit other podiatry businesses.
18:50 - Being involved in sports builds understanding.
It's important to be active yourself if you want to work with sportspeople. You don't have to perform at the same level as your patients, but it helps you understand their thinking, the struggles they go through, and you will have more empathy.
27:25 - Benefits of doing research in his own clinic and developing his own data.

00:51:43
Emily Haworth and Sean Savage met via Irish and Northern Irish social media platforms. Emily is passionate about the high-risk foot, whereas Sean's interests are in sports and biomechanics.
Even though they have different interests, they immediately realised they shared the same passion for passing on skills and inspiring the progression of the podiatry profession.
278 - What Are Your Patients Saying About You with Tyson E Franklin
00:09:41
After every podiatry visit, you need to know that your patients will be headed to one of five places; straight home, back to work, catching up with friends, seeing another health professional, or heading to their lawyer's office, and when they do, how will they describe their podiatry experience?
Will they say you were FINE, TERRIBLE OR AWESOME? Most patients will not run around town singing your praises if you are fine, but they will talk about you if you're terrible or awesome, so you're better off being awesome.

Podiatry Business Owner's Club
Are you a podiatrist or podiatry student with an interest in business?
Kieran Carew specialises in CADCAM technologies and postural biomechanics and is the Director of Foothealth UK Ltd. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he developed Pathology Based Orthotics, which is an alternative to custom-made orthotics and perfect for podiatrists using Telehealth.
How his story began
Kieran Carew has always had a passion for sports and fitness, and it was his sporting passion that introduced him to the podiatry profession. While playing Hurling, he developed severe shin splints, and his doctor referred him to a podiatrist.
After his initial assessment, the podiatrist prescribed orthotics.
Kieran openly admits he had no idea what a podiatrist was and when he was first handed his orthotics he felt violated. How could something that looked just like a shoe-innersole cost so much?
Well, to his surprise, the orthotics cured his shin splints. Because of his engineering background, he needed to investigate further how a simple-looking device could have such a dramatic, positive effect on his lower limb biomechanics.
On this episode we discuss:
Plastic engineering
Cadcam and 3D printing
Why orthotics are only part of the solution
What are Pathology based orthotics?
Visit your lab and observing their orthotic manufacturing process.
Why he started weekly webinars: To register and learn more send an email to info@foothealth.eu
"The success of an orthotic is not how you make the orthotic; the key driver comes from the knowledge of the practitioner and how they share that knowledge with the lab."
Final Tip
Update your knowledge. Not every MSK or Biomechanical problem needs orthotics; you can influence change through exercises, and not every orthotic need to be custom-made, sometimes a simple over the counter device is all that is required.
If you have any questions after listening to this episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Kieran at info@foothealth.eu

273 - Persistence & Resilience with Tyson E Franklin
00:11:30
A few years ago, I was asked to present a keynote speech in Cairns titled Persistence and Resilience, and in this episode, I want to discuss three key points from my talk that I feel are worth highlighting.
When bad things happen, you can use it as an excuse for failure or a reason to succeed. I always chose the latter.
Don't lose sight of your WHY, and ask yourself on a regular basis, why do you do what you do?
What is it that drives you? Usually, it's not money.

00:50:58
Comprehensive Treatment of Hallux Limitus: Myofascial, Musculoskeletal & Mental Considerations.
Hallux Limitus can be a debilitating and painful condition, progressively worsening if left untreated or treated incorrectly, and my guest, DL Walker, is a Corrective Manual Therapist specialising in foot and ankle dysfunctions.
In this episode, DL will explain her approach to successfully treating hallux limitus and how you can immediately apply this knowledge to your patients.
We also discuss:
Why it is important to get to the root cause of hallux limitus.
When it hurts is more important than how much it hurts.
Predisposing Factors: Biology versus Functionality.
Why do you need stability in order to have mobility?
Release, Realign and Reinforce the joint.
What is Functional Manual Therapy?
Are you looking at a restriction problem or a stability problem?
Five important processes:
Reduce Inflammation
Protect the joint
Stabilisation
Mobilisation and release of connective tissue around the joint.
Adjust the mindset.

How exciting is it, knowing you’ve only got one year to go?
What part of podiatry are you enjoying the most?
Which parts of the profession excite or concern you?
What type of work are you looking for when you graduate?
Will you stay in Brisbane?
Have you considered working overseas?
Do you wish there were areas of podiatry that you got to spend more time on at University?
Towards the end of the recording, I let them turn the table on me to ask a few questions.

315 - (Part 1) Group Perspective On Good, Bad and Difficult Patients
00:52:13
Do you believe there are good, bad and difficult patients, and possibly many variations in between? In episode 307, I shared my thoughts on good, bad and difficult patients based on my clinical and business experiences, and as expected, some podiatrists agreed wholeheartedly, and others did not agree.
This prompted getting a broader perspective on this topic by producing a group episode with eight guests, split over two episodes – This is PART ONE.
It’s important to note that my guests’ comments are their opinions based on individual beliefs, values and personal experiences; no one is right or wrong, and you have the right to agree or disagree with their comments.
If you do, I want to let you know you’re not alone, and most of my coaching clients feel the same way, which is why they chose to work with me over a larger cookie-cutter coaching company.
During our call, I will explain the Thriving Podiatry Business Model, which I’ve developed over many years. After we talk, I guarantee you will have more clarity on what is best for you and your business.
“I was a frustrated business owner for five years until I started working with Tyson. He helped me transform my business in a matter of months, resulting in an instant increase in revenue and the ability to attract and retain top-quality podiatrists. Over the past three and a half years, working with Tyson has changed my life drastically. I was able to take time off to start a family, triple my business revenue, and finally achieve a work-life balance. I highly recommend Tyson to anyone who is looking for a business coach.”
Simon Bartold has worked with elite athletes for more than three decades, been to four Olympic Games, lectured in 42 countries on footwear and clinical biomechanics, and worked extensively with Asics and Salomon, so it's not surprising that his membership group, Bartold Clinical is the go-to sports medicine educational platform for podiatrists and other health professionals.
“Online education sites are a dime a dozen these days, so, if you are about to spend some money, you want to make sure you get the very best!” — Simon Bartold.
On this episode we discuss:
The amount of hard work that goes into a membership group.
Why Bartold Biomechanics evolved to Bartold Clinical.
Delivering quality CPD.
The importance of finding your niche.
The frustrations with some research that cannot be applied in a clinical situation.
Why the only way to know something is to ask the question.
Why the educational landscape has changed
Covid has taught us what you can now do with virtual education. This style of education is growing because you get more bang for your buck.
Conferences will be smaller and more specific, and people will attend because they are interested in the subject.
"At conferences, speakers should be mentors and should be interacting more with attendees after their presentations".
Final Tip
You have to be passionate. You need to have a vision if you want to start your own membership group and you’ve got to dedicate time and a lot of effort.
081 - Jonathan Small Don't Live In The Land of Low Fees
00:48:55
My guest Jonathan Small is a UK based podiatrist, and he believes that you should be charging what you're worth, and nothing less. You should also stay away from theland of low fees because it is a dangerous place and nothing good ever comes from it.
If you want to have a financially viable podiatry business, you've got to set your fees correctly. You should never set your prices based on what your competitors are charging.
Why podiatrists don't value the service they provide.
Fee mindset
When you charge higher fees, you also have to start delivering on service
COVID-19 is showing why having low fees is not a good business move and is damaging long-term.
Cashed up podiatrists who charged correctly and now have a cash reserve will ride out this pandemic comfortably.
When you charge more, you can provide better services, do more CPD, etc.
Higher fees are a reflection of the value of the education you provide to your patients - What is the value of the solution to the patient?
The public perception of professionals that charge higher fees (Surgeons, Lawyers...why not Podiatrists)
"My approach is that if a patient comes to me with a foot problem that I can fix it as well as a surgeon can fix why should I charge any different to that surgeon?"
Reboot Your Podiatry Business
NOW is the perfect opportunity to reboot your podiatry business because patients are taking their health far more serious since COVID-19.
So if you think outside the box, there are real opportunities to be had.
Being Busy Is Not A Sign of Success
If you want a successful business, you need to free up time from your diary so you can work on the business.
Therefore you need to get rid of some patients by increasing your fees or take on another employee to see those patients for you, so you have time to work on the business.
Saying you do not have time is not an excuse, especially now.
Marketing
You have to get your marketing systems set and working correctly and to do this right it takes time, which is why you need to free up the time you're spending with patients.
If you don't like working on the business and working on your marketing that fine, you just need to get someone who does like it, or you should work for someone else. Business is not for everyone.
You need to work:
On the business
In the business
And away from the business (time off)
"When you have a good marketing strategy, you create a steady stream of new patients, and this is what makes your business safe and successful".
Final Tip
Make a decision not to live the land of lower fees. Decide that you're going to be the Ferrari of foot care. You will lose patients, but if you have a good marketing strategy, you will quickly fill that void.

00:48:41
Dr Nicole Graf Freels is the owner of Lexington Podiatry in Kentucky, USA, and she is a true inspiration and trailblazer when it comes to doing things differently. She has developed a business that is 100% patient-centred and focused on every touchpoint.
This care and attention to detail with her patients is why her business has 1745 Google Reviews with a 4.9 Star-Rating.
In this episode, we discuss:
Developing team culture and making sure every new team member fits as they should.
Making an effort to make every patient feel special.
VIP - Very Individualised Person
It doesn't always take a lot of money to make a patient feel special, it just takes a lot of intention, planning and management.
Treat your team as good as you treat your patients and keep them happy because everyone is hiring.
Benchmarking and setting up consistent protocols.
What is Mod Pod?
Mod Pod is short for Modern Podiatrist, a hand-crafted product range designed for podiatry patients.
When Nicole was younger, she spent a lot of time with her Grandfather, who was also a podiatrist, and she would help him make foot care products for his patient using natural ingredients.
With marketing, you have to be authentic, and it has to be you.

309 - Medical Mission Work in Honduras with Dr Jessica Knight DPM
Dr Jessica Knight, DPM, is a foot and ankle surgeon at Northwest Community Medical Group, Chicago, where she specialises in limb lengthening, deformity correction, and limb salvage of the lower extremities.
When she is not in private practice, she volunteers and does medical mission work in Honduras for the treatment of children with congenital birth abnormalities such as club foot, coalitions, and fibular hemimelia.
This episode is a very inspiring story about balancing your career and family life, learning to say YES when an opportunity arises, and putting your ego aside for the greater good.
Do You Think Differently from the Average Podiatrist?
If you do, I want to let you know you’re not alone, and most of my coaching clients feel the same way, which is why they chose to work with me over a larger cookie-cutter coaching company.
My coaching clients do not have big egos; they are quiet achievers and like to fly under the radar, but they do want to evolve their podiatry businesses into something special, something they can be proud of and say, "This is mine".
If this sounds like you, we should talk. You can visit my website, www.tysonfranklin.com or follow the link below to my calendar, where you can easily schedule a free 30-minute Zoom call with me.
I guarantee that after we talk, you will have far more clarity on what is best for you and your business.
300 - How I Established A 100% Biomech Clinic with Hayley Paterson
00:42:05
This milestone 300th episode of Podiatry Legends features host Tyson Franklin and guest Hayley Paterson of Foundation Podiatry in Townsville, Queensland. Hayley traces her inspirational 19-year journey from a new graduate to a successful business and clinic owner.
We learn how she initially worked with Tyson in Cairns because she wanted to work in Regional Queensland; then, after two years and with his guidance, Hayley set up her own podiatry business and, after several years, eventually found her niche in biomechanics.
Hayley shares the ups and downs of business ownership, building her team, mentoring new podiatrists, and staying resilient when things do not always go to plan. Haley proves that you can create a successful business on your own terms with passion and perseverance.
Even with all her business success, Hayley still considers herself a born practitioner and less of a business owner, so she can struggle to wear both hats.
Tyson and Haley's camaraderie reminds us that mentors often learn as much from their mentees.

223 - AFTER the Richie Brace with Dr Doug Richie
00:46:10
Before inventing the Richie Brace, Dr Doug Richie was content growing and developing his sports podiatry practice; however, that all changed when podiatrists started using it to treat Post Tib Dysfunction.
In this episode, we discuss:
What happened AFTER the Richie Brace was invented.
The changes it made to his career.
How he pivoted and embraced this change to create a booming podiatry business that was no longer sports-focused.
The positives of changing your patient demographics.
Reinventing yourself, which many podiatrists do about 15 years into their careers.
Leaving your EGO at the door.
How did the Richie Brace become so popular?
It was all by accident; there was no self-promotion. Dr Doug Richie was unexpectedly invited to speak at many conferences and, along the way, developed a series of educational lectures and workshops on the correct use and application of the Richie Brace and Post Tib Dysfunction treatment.

312 - Jason Feifer is the Editor in Chief at Entrepreneur Magazine
00:30:14
Have you ever considered why, sometimes, your effort isn't enough? You can work your ass off, and you will not get what you're looking for.
In this episode, Jason Feifer, Editor in Chief at Entrepreneur Magazine, a magazine entrepreneurs read to gain insights into building their businesses and careers, will shed light on this question and many others.
Sometimes, massive mistakes can be turned into positives. For example, Smedberg's Farm, in Maine, USA, is the home of the LOBESTER.
Banging your head against a wall will not turn that wall into a door. But if you shift that effort into something more constructive and realistic and fits better with your skill sets and the resources available, it can create something just as good.
Content creation
When you produce content, you're not creating it for yourself; you are making it for an audience, so you better understand that audience, how to serve them, and how you can deliver it in a way that no one else can.
Stop Doing What People Hate
This is a quote from Jesse Cole: 'Stop doing what people hate'. Every business does things people hate, and they think it's ok because that's how things have always been done.
Think about it and make an effort to eliminate them. Why would you do it to your clients if it annoys you when dealing with other businesses?
Final Tip
Treat your time like your most valuable resource. You don't spend money at total random, and you should not spend time at total random either.
Consider subscribing to Jason's weekly newsletter - One Thing Better.
Do you have questions about your podiatry business, team, personal goals and career direction?
If you do, I'm here to help in any way I can. I recommend following the link below to my calendar and scheduling a free 30-minute Zoom call. I guarantee that after we talk, you will have far more clarity on what is best for you, your business and your career.

220 - (Part 1) Medico-Legal Aspects of Practice & Dispute Resolution with Dr Cam Wareham
00:50:59
Regardless of how competent you are, there is still a real possibility that one day a patient could blame you for their pain and suffering and want to take legal action against you.
Dr Cam Wareham is known to many in Australia and the UK as a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon and Professor in Healthcare for the University of Sunderland. He previously was Head of School at the University of Western Australia.
In addition to this, he has a Master of Law in Dispute Resolution and in this episode, we're going to dig into his knowledge in the area of medical-legal aspects of podiatry and what he does as a medical expert in legal cases.
Topics of Discussion:
What is negligence and what is not?
Balance of probabilities.
Duty and standard of care.
Some patients are more high-risk than others.
The power of communication.
Dispute Resolution and Arbitration.
Top Three Reasons Patients Sue:
They don't want what happened to them to happen to anyone else.
They want an apology and want to understand why it went wrong.
Compensation.
Dr Cam Wareham also explains two real-life examples. One is a patient with an ingrown toenail, and the other is a patient with heel pain.
If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.

316 - (Part 2) Group Perspective On Good Bad and Difficult Patients
00:54:22
Do you believe there are good, bad and difficult patients, and possibly many variations in between? In episode 307, I shared my thoughts on good, bad and difficult patients based on my clinical and business experiences. As expected, some podiatrists agreed wholeheartedly with my comments, while others did not agree, which was great.
This prompted getting a broader perspective on this topic by producing a group episode with eight guests, split over two episodes – This is PART TWO.
During our call, I will explain the Thriving Podiatry Business Model, and I guarantee, after we talk, that you will have more clarity on what is best for you and your business.
Testimonial:
“I was a frustrated business owner for five years until I started working with Tyson. He helped me transform my business in a matter of months, resulting in an instant increase in revenue and the ability to attract and retain top-quality podiatrists. Over the past three and a half years, working with Tyson has changed my life drastically. I was able to take time off to start a family, triple my business revenue, and finally achieve a work-life balance. I highly recommend Tyson to anyone who is looking for a business coach.”

163 - Paul Griffin Diversifying Outside of Podiatry
00:45:52
Paul Griffin is an outside-the-box thinker and believes the skillset we possess as podiatrists is quite unique and can be utilised in many areas.
Paul graduated from Curtin University, Western Australia in 1998. He ran two podiatry businesses, each with a different clinical focus and in 2009 decided to move away from clinical podiatry to explore a diversified career.
Paul currently splits his time running the education site, Bartold Clinical and is a director of Osaka Footwear Singapore.
In this episode we discuss:
Results based practice.
The credibility we have as podiatrists.
Footwear innovations and trends.
Building shoes for Osaka Footwear leading up to the Tokyo Olympics.
Podiatrists are the ultimate footwear reviewers because we get to see how the shoe actually performs with patients (the end-users).
Reading the play and learning where to position yourself.
Part-time podiatry is a real opportunity.
Final Tip
Buy yourself some time to do other things, which means making sure you have time in your schedule to make sure it happens. If you try and add it on top of what you're already doing you’ll burn out.
Explore what your character is looking for. It could be art, business or other projects, and then make sure you position yourself in that community so you can have those worthwhile, weighted discussions.
Always surround yourself with people that will bring the best out of you.
If you have any questions about this episode, one-on-one business coaching or any of my group coaching programs, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and we can arrange a quick ZOOM call.

00:44:14

Whether you're contemplating a similar transition or simply seeking inspiration, this episode is packed with wisdom and practical advice.

016 - Kristi Boles Allied Wellness & Fundamentals of Healing
00:37:15
At thirty years of age, Kristi Boles had the world at her feet. She was married with children and was running nine successful podiatry practices in Victoria, Australia; however, her health took a sudden downward turn resulting in heart surgery and a very long lay off from running her businesses. She was also diagnosed with Marfan's Syndrome.
On this podcast episode, Kristi openly talks about her sudden, unexpected health issues and also how she has transformed her own life, and that of her patients by being more aware of the fundamentals of healing and good health.
Taking Wednesday's Off
Kristi takes off every Wednesday to rejuvenate, work on her business, with her team member and focus on business mentoring. She gets excited on Tuesday afternoons knowing she has the next day off.
She was running nine podiatry businesses and working full time herself, which lead to burnout and aorta dissected. This health scare began her journey about better health and bringing this knowledge into practice.
When you have a health scare, you get a whole new perspective about being a mother, a wife and a business owner. It doesn't take long to work out your priorities.
This was when Kristi decided to consolidate her businesses and integrate nutrition into her life and businesses systems.
It's All About Good Communication
After her doctors gave her the all clear to go back to work Kristi realised they never listened to how she was feeling.
Yes her heart was fine, but no one asked about her diet and overall health and wellbeing. She was not drinking enough water, had high stress, and even though she was eating well, she was missing the fundamentals of good health.
She had migraines, fatigued, no energy to last the full day and needed an afternoon sleep.
With good communication, you can set better treatment plans, and after listening to your patients, you will also know if they are capable of doing it.
Journey of Self-Education
So many people with chronic problems:
Don’t have resources
Do not understand the fundamentals of healing
Need assistance in making better decisions themselves
It is a tool for practitioners to use with their patients and it's an evidence-based program, and it stays within the scope of practice. It's used as:
A screening tool
Patient education booklet
Patient diary
Patient referral tool
Resource library
If you're interested in using the program use Promo code PODLEGENDS discount
As health practitioners, we’re all singing the same tune, which is why we all need to be working together for the patients' benefit. It shows we care.
Keeping Patients Accountable
When you check in with your patients about their hydration and diet, it will make them more conscious, and they will make an effort to do the right thing and improve. It's about empowered patients.
Patients will start making the decisions themselves and success leads to more success. It also has a mirroring effect; we become that role model as well.
Number One tip
Truly listening to your patients is where it all starts. They know their body better than you, but it begins by asking the right questions.

123 - Dr Jim McDannald The 5 Elements of An Online Presence
00:45:53
Dr Jim McDannald has practised podiatry in both the United States and Canada and gradually shifted careers from podiatry to online marketing over a number of years. This led to digital roles at Rio in 2016 with the Canadian Olympic Track & Field team and fitness technology company, Polar.
After talking with a few colleagues frustrated by bad experiences with digital marketing agencies, he combined his two areas of expertise to start Podiatry Growth.
Now, he helps podiatrists understand their online opportunities and provides digital marketing services.
On this episode we discuss:
His transition into online marketing
Colleagues frustrated with large digital agencies who do not understand podiatry.
Having a digital marketing plan and knowing your ROI
not going with the online-flow because everyone else is doing it.
"You need to measure what you're doing, know what’s going on, and have a baseline of knowledge so online marketing is not a complete blind spot".
Ask yourself these questions:
Who are you?
Who are you treating?
What type of practice do you want?
What type of patients do you like?
What do you want to do most?
After asking good questions, you may find that offline marketing is a better option for your business.
5 Elements of An Online Presence
FOUNDATION: You need a strong foundation. It used to be your clinic location, but now it’s your website. Social media is good, but you don't own the content, you need to Pay to Play. After your website, it's important to set up your profile on Google My Business.
SEARCH: Both paid and organic forms of search are important. Your goal is to have the best page for the particular topic potential patients are searching for, and you want to keep them on your page as long as possible. Adding a video keeps them on your page longer.
REPUTATION: It's important to understand that information about you, and your podiatry business is not just on your website and on your Google My Business page, it’s also on other platforms, so you need to monitor these, especially Google Reviews.
COMMUNICATION: Your database of your patients is an untapped educational goldmine. Use educational newsletters to explain the benefits of your practice to your patients. Share information about yourself, your community, it humanises you. Use emails.
PROMOTION: It’s a form of advertising, but it's important to do the first four elements. You’ve got to get in front of your ideal patient, and Facebook ads are an easy way of targeting them. In your ads, use photos of you treating your ideal patient. It’s about positioning yourself in that space/area/market as the go-to podiatrist. Use photos, videos, content about that subject on your website and other places.
When you're first starting out in business, you may be doing a lot of shoe-leather marketing, but as you get busier and run out of time, online marketing methods may be more helpful.
Final Tip
Don’t try and do everything yourself, get help from others, like a business advisor or coach; you will progress much faster. You need to find a group or groups of people where you can continually learn.

My Next Event - Podiatry MarketingWorkshop 2021
Over the past thirty-plus years, I have opened, sold, relocate and taken over more than 20 podiatry businesses, so when it comes to marketing a podiatry business successfully, I know what works, and what's a waste of time and money.
During this 4-hour workshop, I will explain, step-by-step, how I took a small podiatry business with one consultation room from $0 to $402,000 in the first 12-months.
With this information, you will have a competitive advantage over your competitors.
221 - (Part 2) Medico-Legal Aspects of Practice & Dispute Resolution
00:47:57
Did you know podiatrists under investigation perform at 45-55% of their capacity? And are you aware that your consent form does not immediately protect you? In part two, Dr Cam Wareham digs deeper into the medico-legal aspects of practice, how it can affect you professionally and steps you should take to avoid being sued.
In this episode, we discuss:
Are universities to blame?
The problem with sticking with treatment modalities that don't work.
Delayed Suffering.
What do you do if there is a payout and you've been found responsible?
The emotional rollercoaster.
How to psychologically survive.
Note taking the right way, so the patient fully understands what treatment you are undertaking and the full extent of complications.
Why a consent form is not good enough?
The dispute resolution process.
Vicarious Liability and why employers need to have standard operating procedures.

252 - The 10 Most Important T's in Podiatry with Dr Bharti Rajput
00:44:13
Doctor Bharti Rajput is an award-winning Podiatrist and Healthcare entrepreneur based in Scotland. After graduation, she pursued a PhD in Biomechanics, specialising in human movement analysis.
Her Late Majesty Queens Elizabeth III awarded her an MBE for outstanding podiatry service to the community, and she received her medal at Buckingham Palace in 2018 from King Charles III.
In this episode, Bharti discusses the ten most important T's in podiatry and why they are all important for our careers and the podiatry profession.
The 10 T's
Title of the profession. We need to reduce confusion in the community.
Training Years at the point of graduating.
Taking care of oneself every day.
Taking time off to enjoy life.
Nurture your team's Talent.
Taking care of your team.
Tiered Care Structure.
Setting new Trends.
Ditch Toxicity.
Total care of the patient.
Bonus - take time out to enjoy a cup of tea.
Below is Bharti's Indian Masala Chai recipe. Masala tea is a blend of black tea with spices believed in ancient Indian traditions to help boost your immune system.
Step 1:
Take a mug of water and a tea bag (for each cup of tea) and tip into a pan and place onto the stove (hob) for 3-4 minutes
Step 2:
In a pestle and mortar, put in a cardamom pod alongside cinnamon, clove, black peppercorns and even ginger and bash to help release the oils - a lot of families grind this down in a blender in advance and store it in a jar ready to use as needed
Step 3:
Allow the tea to have released its colours before lowering the heat to a gentle simmer and adding 1/2 a teaspoon (per cup) of this spice mix.
Step 4:
Stir approximately two tablespoons of milk (per cup) and allow to simmer for 3-4 minutes until you get the strength of tea you desire.
Step 5:
Turn off the heat and leave to infuse for a couple of minutes

What can podiatrists learn from the fast-food industry? It seems a lot.
About 30 years ago, McDonald's employed a new strategy to consistently offer every customer an add-on to each burger item on their menu. There was no customer assessment or thought process as to would the customer say yes or no, or can they afford the add-on, or even if they wanted it, instead, DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT became the mantra for every McDonald’s employee taking an order.
307 - The Difference Between Bad and Difficult Patients
00:10:55
In this episode, I explain The Difference Between Bad Patients and Difficult Patients…. If you hang with me for the next ten minutes, you will see that there is a vast difference between bad and difficult, and only one of them gives you an opportunity to grow as a business owner.
Hi, I’m Tyson Franklin, and if you’re looking for assistance to help grow and evolve your podiatry business, please talk with me before you commit to a larger coaching company that will more than likely, after their initial call, hand you off to an employee who may or may not know much about podiatry. You deserve better!
I only work with a small number of one-on-one clients at any one time, and they all work directly with me, so if you have a spare thirty minutes, let’s talk before you commit anywhere else.
087 - John Guiliana Clinical Benefits of Lower Patient Volumes
00:48:11
Dr John Guiliana has had a unique career path, moving from Pharmacy to Podiatry and eventually into Healthcare Management withNEMO Health.
Right now, during COVID-19, he has been assisting podiatry business owners across North America to move through the Fear, Learning and Growth Zones, and helping them understand how they can have lower patient volumes, yet still, enjoy improved profits.
On this episode we discuss:
How a D+ student found his intellectual groove
Why he decided to leave Pharmacy and become a Podiatrist
Nemo Health - A Practice Improvement Company
COVID-19
Covid-19 has affected everybody, on both a business and personal perspective, and it has been global.
Fear, Learning & Growth Zones
During this pandemic, it's essential to get out of the Fear Zone, move through the Learning Zone, and eventually get into the Growth Zone
You need to learn how to maintain profitability in your business with lower patient volumes, and some podiatrists will come out of the pandemic in a better than when they went in.
It's about learning to do more with less.
Why is there is a low patient volume?
Patients are also going through the three zones of fear, learning and growth.
There is also the Paradox of Thrift - which occurs when you have people that have been economically hurt, and because of this, they become more thrifty with where and when they spend their money.
Cash flow is the key right now for every business. Getting paid faster and being more careful where you spend your money, only then can you work on profits.
"The actions you take right now are going to help you with the long-term profitability of your business."
Action Steps with Lower Patient Volumes
Spend time reinventing your practice:
Go through your policy and procedure manuals.
Engage and collaborate with your staff and be a leader, and remove those team members that will not change.
Look at your clinical protocols: You need to increase your PVR - Per visit Revenue.
This is why lower patient volume will help increase long-term revenue because of the more thorough patient and evidence-based protocols.
These will well offset lower patient volumes.
Focus on what you enjoy doing. Get rid of the things they don't like to do.
Looking beyond the chief complaint: What other treatment or service can you ethically provide.
Dentists have been doing this forever. They explain things you cannot see
Does your patient with an ingrown toenail have bunions or chronic knee pain? Creating Care Plans results in better patient outcomes and higher PVR.
Final Tip
Search for lessons learned. And the #1 lesson learned from this pandemic is the importance of liquidity. You need to have six to nine months of cash reserves for the next economic crisis.

Podiatry Business Coaching & Mentoring
If you want to own and operate a Thriving Podiatry Business, you've got to work on four specific areas of your business.
Marketing - You need to have a proper, well thought out strategy
Systems - You need systems that will support both your marketing and your team.
Team - You need to develop a culture that makes your life easier, not harder
Diary - This is the backbone. Your diary needs to be structured in a way that maximises patient number per day and in turn, will increase your daily profits.
Thinking you can just work on one part or maybe two out of four areas and still do well is no longer good enough, you must develop all four pieces of the business puzzle.

Alex Murray is a Canberra based Podiatrist working in private practice and the founder of the website Making Sense in Podiatry. He'spassionate about helping other clinicians make sense of evidence and clinical practice with a core philosophy of exploring the complexity of human beings, embracing the uncertainty of clinical practice, and avoiding overly reductionist thinking.
He has experience with both national and international athletes and recently transitioned to focusing primarily on helping the general population, and local athletes manage their pain and achieve their goals.
On this episode we discuss:
The paradigm shift and changing the ways we think about not only our failures but also our successes.
Reductionism & Complexity
Guided problem solving: why different problems can be managed successfully in many ways
Having more treatment options make us better.
Pain Management and managing athletes.
Patient beliefs and previous experiences will determine their behaviours.
The long-term benefits of understanding and listening to your patient's goals and how to encourage them back into their activity
"Reassurance is a great pain killer."
Final Tip
Listen: You need to listen before you begin to educate your patient. If you listen, you'll know everything that you need to address. You'll know what the patient's goal is, and you can take that information and apply it to them.
With listening, we'll know what they're looking for, expecting, and what makes them fearful. Only then can we can reassure our patients.
Reflective Listening: Reflect what they're saying, so they can either correct us or agree with us. There needs to be a sense of collaboration.
If you want to know more, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and we can set up a Zoom Call and have a quick chat to see if I can be of assistance.

073 - Dave James Video Tips Every Podiatrist Should Use
00:45:30
Dave James is a UK based Podiatrist & Business Coach, and previous guest on this podcast (Ep 007). I asked Dave to come back onto the show to talk about a topic that I know is extremely important but often avoided by many people, myself included, and that's using video to grow your podiatry business.
Dave shares some straightforward tips that will give you the confidence to start shooting video almost immediately, and I know this for a fact because that's what I did straight after we did this recording. That's how simple Dave's make it all sound.
On this episode we discuss:
Why being the real you is what people need to see. Be authentic.
Shooting video is as easy as grabbing your phone, pressing record and hitting upload. Editing is not required.
If you overthink it, video is not easy, but it is still simple to do
Why people don't shoot video is because they are concerned they:
Sound funny
Look funny
And don't have anything to say
Important to remember, no one sees you the same way you see yourself.
The Haters
When you shoot and upload a video, you're putting yourself out there for everyone to see. The people who like you will find you but so to will the people who don't like you.
"You can't control what others think; you can only control what you put out there, not how people react".
This is why you should never take advice from someone that is not fighting the same battle as you. If you're criticised it will be from someone that is not shooting video themselves, so do not listen to them.
It's Important To Be The Real You
If there is any incongruence between you on video and you in real life it will be noticed, and it can cause an unconscious unease. People can smell when you're trying to sell something.
Patients will feel uncomfortable with you and not know why, so always be the real you on video.
ZMOT - Zero Moment of Truth
Google refers to the zero moment of truth as the moment in the buying cycle when the patient, customer or client researches a product, often before the seller even knows that they exist and decides that yes, they will do business with you.
Authentic videos will help move the ZMOT along faster.
Finding Video Content
Podiatrists are often confused about what they should talk about on video and Dave offers some simple advice.
Every time a patient asks you a question, write it in a journal, no matter how simple the subject and these are the topics of your videos.
"If you see 15 patients per day, it's highly probable you will be asked 15 questions. Answer the questions; there's your video content."
When you post a video:
Someone may say you're a twat.
Someone may say thank you very much.
But someone will say can I ask you another question? And that's what you want.
It's as simple as:
Deciding on your content (patient questions)
Simply pick up your phone and start recording.
Little to no editing, and there's no need for flashy introductions and transitions.
Upload
Avoid Overproduction
If you overproduce your videos with intro and transitions and too much flare, it disconnects you from the person watching the video. You want them to see you as real.
You want to create a regular conversation using ordinary day-to-day words, looking around like you would in a natural conversation, that's your goal.
The more barriers you create trying to be perfect, the harder it will be for you to do.
Good Quality Sound
When you are recording a video, lighting, background etc. are essential, but not as important as the sound quality. If recording video on your phone outside, be aware of the wind.
Captions are also important as a very high percentage of people watch a video without sound.
I have set up a Podiatry Legends Facebook page, where I post additional business and marketing tips, information regarding podiatry events and conferences around the world.

118 - Be Successful by Standing Out with Jesse Cole
00:46:53
Jesse Cole is the founder of Fans First Experience and owner of the multi-million dollar USA baseball team, the Savannah Bananas.
He is a sort after speaker who promotes the motto "if it's normal, do the exact opposite" and is the author of Find Your Yellow Tux and the host of one of my favourite podcasts Business Done Differently.
On this episode we discuss:
Asking yourself what business am I in and then what business am I really in?
Challenging the friction points of your business.
Learning from outside of your industry and bringing this knowledge back into your industry.
The importance of having fun - take your work seriously but don’t take yourself too seriously.
"No one gets home and says they met the most professional person today. Instead, they will talk about how you made them feel and what was unique about you and made you stand out".
Pay attention to every touchpoint with your patients.
Think about your customer journey and what are the friction points.
"There's nothing worse than someone dropping the F-Bomb about your business. You don't want them to say their experience was FINE".
The 5 E’s
Eliminate the Friction
Macro-Friction (Industry Level)
Micro-Friction (voice mail, innocence’s, etc.)
Entertain Always - provide entertaining touchpoints.
Experiment constantly - Your success is a direct function of how many experiments we do per year, per month, per week, per day.
Engage Deeply
Empower Action - don’t be afraid to fail.
Think about what your 2.0 or 3.0 version is of what you currently do.
"10, 20, 30 40 years ago, boring was acceptable, but this is no longer the case."
Ask Yourself
Do you want to have a beer with your business? Is your business fun enough that you want to hang out and have fun? Unfortunately, most businesses are not fun.
What if it did?
Maybe some of this information does not apply to podiatry, but what if it did? How would this change the way you approach your patients or run your business?
Open your mind up to the possibility of doing tungs differently.
Worst Case
If you embrace this new thinking or implement a new idea, you need to consider the worst-case scenario, but sometimes the best thing that can happen is even bigger.
Wear Your T-Shirt
What would it take for people to wear a shirt with your business name on the front...that’s when people feel they belong to something.
Who are you not for?
When you make changes to your business or start delivering what you do differently, there will be people that do not like it and would prefer you to be like everyone else, and that's great. You don't want to be for everyone...that's boring.
If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.
Chloe Wear is the owner of The Woodvale Podiatrist in Perth, Western Australia. She graduated from The University of Huddersfield (UK) in 2006 and emigrated to Australia in 2008, and today we're going to talk about treating warts.
We also discuss:
Moving to Queensland, Australia, from the UK.
Why she decided to live in Perth.
Jumping on opportunities when they present themselves and not waiting for everything to be perfect.
Why she wanted to have her own podiatry business.
Previous poor results treating warts made her hate warts.
I want to let you know you’re not alone if you do. Most of my coaching clients feel the same way, so they chose to work with me over a larger cookie-cutter coaching company.
During our call, I will explain the Thriving Podiatry Business Model, and I guarantee that after we talk, you will have more clarity on what is best for you and your business.

045 - Drs Peyman & Viedra Elison Developing Passion & Culture in Your Podiatry Business
00:31:29
When it comes to running a successful podiatry business, it is vital to find your passion, surround yourself with the right team, and develop a mindset of success by associating with like-minded positive people.
Drs Peyman & Viedra Elison are a dynamic podiatry team that own Fixing Feet Institute in Surprise, Arizona. I recently spent three days with them in Tempe, Arizona at Business Black Ops, which is a high-level mastermind group.
I've wanted to get them on the Podiatry Legends Podcast for some time, so while I had them together in Arizona, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to capture their thought of podiatry business success.
On this episode we discuss:
Choosing to live in different states to pursue their podiatry careers.
Working on an Indian Reservation in Arizona and how this has shaped Viedra's career and passion for diabetes and limb salvage.
Peyman's passion for paediatric biomechanics, foot deformities and peripheral nerve surgery.
Associates and culture problems - "Some people are just not trainable".
Why continuing medical education is essential, but if you want to grow a successful business and life, you've got to attend business and marketing events.
You need a positive mindset to bring it all together.
Viedra's Tip:
In the early part of your career, focus on your education, not your location. You need to get out of your comfort zone.
Peyman's Tip:
Find a niche market, something you enjoy and hone in on it. And if you feel you're in a rut, start hanging out with new people.

If you want to have a long and prosperous career in podiatry, you've got to love what you do each day, and my guest, UK based Podiatrist, Clifton Bradeley does exactly that.
Clifton runs a podiatry business called Sub-4, but previous to this he was a world-class middle-distance runner representing both England and Great Britain and in 1985 he was the first person to run the mile in under 4 mins, indoors on English soil.
His time was 3:57:88, and he was on track to compete at the 1988 Olympics until his career came to an end due to injury, but it's this injury that steered Clifton towards a podiatry career.
On this episode we discuss:
1:30 - The importance of listening: If you give yourself time to listen to someone else's story you'll learn that everybody has something interesting to say.
2:45 - His biggest career mistake that cost him 150,000 pounds, but also taught him some valuable lessons.
"Never be afraid to pull the plug and say, it failed".
5:25 - Benefits of closing a business when it's failing.
When you have a few consecutive years of success, when you're in the flow, or on a roll, you think you're indestructible, and this is when you need to keep your ego in check.
"If anyone says to you there are successful all the time they are lying".
7:00 - Why failure can be a good and bad thing. Everything cannot be successful all of the time, it's part of life.
If you've got a product or service in the right area that people need and want, and you have the business systems in place and you're the right person for the job, you will succeed. But if you're backing a donkey it doesn't matter how good you are; you will fail. You need to know how to identify the donkey and do it early.
11:35 - The benefits of a customer-focused business.
13:20 - SUB-4: The brand itself is everything, we protect the brand, and we promote the brand. Each year we spend money on exhibition space to promote the SUB-4 brand and business. This year we'll spend 10,000 pounds, but in previous years we have spent more than 100,000 pounds.
18:45 - Attitude of gratitude
22:30 - How his athletic career has helped his business success. It's all about dedication.
25:30 - His decision to take up a scholarship at Iowa State University
28:30 - Flying to new New York City for Podiatry Treatment.
Even though his first pair of orthotics were completely wrong and caused more problems, it did lead to an interest in the biomechanical assessment process and his interest in podiatry.
29:35 - Finding his passion:
Once his career began, and after talking to a few runners as patients, it didn't take Clifton long to find his home and where he felt most comfortable in podiatry.
Clifton quickly worked out he spoke their language, and it's important to be passionate about what you're doing every day.
33:10 - Personal and Professional Growth:
You're going to get bored if you're not challenging yourself to be better. As human beings curiosity drives us, and if you're doing the same thing every day and have no passion for improving, life and work will be boring.
34:30 - Being honest with patients when you're not sure what is causing their problem.
"Be honest with patients, they're not stupid, and they deserve respect".
37:25 - Aim to get control of your resources. Have a goal to buy your building and set up your lab. The more resources you control, the more power you have over your future.
38:30 - An excellent question to ask yourself is, What's Next? Before you end one project, you should already be preparing for his next step.
39:05 - Money will come if you keep reinvesting back into your business.
What type of business do you want to have?
Do you want a lifestyle business where you work as a solo practitioner, or do you want a company where you employ others and possibly have multiple locations?
Being a solo practitioner has its benefits, and your goal should be to keep your expenses low. The fewer costs you have, the more money you save. A company, on the other hand, you need to pay yourself a set salary, and for the next few years, you need to reinvest the rest.
If you set up your business with a company mindset you've got to be continually progressing and growing, however, a lifestyle business can stay static much longer, but you also don't make money when you have holidays.
If you have any questions about this episode, podiatry marketing or one-on-one business mentoring, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com

078 - Jason Cunningham Have Your Cake & Sell It Too
00:44:17
Jason Cunningham is the co-owner of The Practice, a business advisory firm in Victoria Australia, an author and media commentator on radio and television, including Network Ten's The Living Room.
Beginning with the end in mind, and why this is powerful.
You are building a business that’s ready for sale, even if you don’t want to sell it.
When a business is ready for sale, what does it look like, sound and feel like?
Highly profitable
Amazing cashflow
A team that is a delight to work with
Customers that keep coming back
Runs without you
Someone will one day offer you big bucks, but you’re in a position to say no.
Most professional services work for themselves because they are great at what they do and think that's the natural next step.
Employing people better than yourself to work with you.
Understanding the long game of building a business that’s suitable for the ultimate customers, which is the one person that is going to buy your business
Why you need to start building an designing it right now, not when you think you may want to sell
Hire the best podiatrists, don’t try and be the best podiatrist
You need to have a STRATEGY:
Most businesses don’t have a plan.
It’s five years old and sits in the office draw.
And no one else in the business knows the plan.
You need to train your team to the plan, and it needs to be crystal clear to everyone involved.
You need to be continuously reminded of the game plan each day.
How is everyone tracking to the plan? (KPI’s)
it's essential to Understand Yourself
You must build your mission statement and be on purpose.
Who do I serve, and how do I serve them?
Once again, be crystal clear.
Mission statement, 20 words or less
What do you stand for? (core values and culture)
Final Tip
Never before has collaboration be so profound and so important, we may feel disconnected, but we are very much connected, therefore the more you put into this world, the more that will come back to you, and the reverse is also true.
"A Crisis requires a cool head, and we’ve never made a smart decision when we’re angry, when we’re drunk or when we panic."

069 - Dr Jeffrey Tho A Commonwealth Games Athletes Perspective On Success
00:43:08
WARNING: This is an uplifting episode that will make you immediately want to achieve more. If you love wallowing in misery and negativity, do not press play.
Dr Jeffrey Tho is a Melbourne based dentist and dental business coach who represented Australia at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Glasgow. This episode could not have been better-timed with all that is happening in the world right now concerning the Coronavirus.
Today we discuss:
What it's like to be a Commonwealth Games athlete
High performance and dedication to a goal
The correlation between success in sport and life
Even with hard work, there are no guarantees of success
"As an athlete, you get so used to hard work that you assume everything you do in the future will take the same effort."
You need to be results-driven, but process focused
Process focused means concentrating on the things that are going to give you the results, it's the day to day things you must do each day to get the desired result.
In a game each shot will win the point, each point will win the set, each set will win the match, and each match will win the competition.
Results are essential because you need to know where you're going, but if you're thinking about the results while you're playing a game (or treating a patient), you're not thinking about the game plan, the activities you need to do to make it a successful outcome.
Snapping Yourself Out of A Rut - Finding a Trigger
We need to recognise the patterns of when we're falling into a negative situation or short term rut.
In sport, this is why even the best athletes have a coach. The coach will tell them precisely what to do, they can see things the athlete cannot see, but when you're your coach, you need to know when this is happening and recognise it early.
Train Certain Triggers
You can train yourself to have triggers when you need them.
You need to do a specific physical movement that you wouldn't normally do and then add a word, and attached to that word a feeling or emotion.
You need to develop your own, and it could be as simple as taking a 10-minute walk during the day.
Changing The Lens
The trigger doesn't need to be that long or complicated; it's just about bringing up and associating a feeling or thought when you need them.
For example, if you were having a consultation with an annoying patient, but that morning someone gave you a million dollars, you wouldn't care, and this patient would not affect you at all because you're seeing the problem through a different lens.
It's really just about your perspective.

267 - When Good Enough is Good Enough with Tyson E Franklin
00:11:19
In podiatry, there are times when perfection is expected. Surgery would be one of those times, sterilising instruments would be another, and also performing a biomechanical assessment and prescribing orthotics would be times when perfection, or close to perfection, is pretty important…however, there are other times when perfection is totally unnecessary, and good enough is good enough to get started.
Over the past few years, I've seen some average podiatry websites; but an average LIVE website is much better than having no website.
If you're waiting for your website to be perfect before making it LIVE, please stop waiting for it to be perfect and get something out there now.
Every day you wait, you're losing potential patients to your competitors who have a live website, and there is a big chance their website may be worse than the one you’re holding back.
And, if you're rebuilding your existing website, don't wait until every page is perfect before relaunching; get the new information onto your site as soon as you can and get it out there so your patients can see it.
Podiatry Legends New Website
I must point out that I am talking from experience here.
I have had at least four major podiatry website designs over my career, and more recently, I have just launched a stand-alone website for the Podiatry Legends Podcast, so this is all very fresh in my mind.
It's far from perfect, and it still needs a few tweaks, but it is LIVE, and that is what counts most. Right now…good enough is good enough.
You have to keep in mind the 80:20 RULE.
If the 80:20 holds true, only 20% of your website pages will be viewed by 80% of the people that visit your website, so if you're waiting for every page to be ready before you launch, you're wasting time because 80% of your pages are not going to be viewed by many people at all.
It’s sad but true.
And even as I say this, it makes me think back to some of the delays I caused on the podiatrylegedns.com website. To make me feel better, you can visit my website and look at every page, but let’s be honest, just like your patients, you’ll stick to the main pages of interest.
Other Marketing
It is important to approach all your marketing with the same attitude: good enough is sometimes good enough.
The patient information brochure you’re working on, the reactivation letter you discussed at last week’s team meeting that still needs some work, and the video you shot last month for YouTube, but you’re holding back because you’re unsure about the lighting or the sound.
In general, most of your marketing activities, as do my own, could probably be tweaked and made better, but 80% and out the door is better than 100% and in the draw.
A brilliant email blast, clinic newsletter or Facebook ad will get zero results until it is released.
The solution is to release it.
I remember when I wrote my first book, It’s No Secret There’s Money in Podiatry. I was part of a writer’s group, and we had a writing mentor. There were four of us in the group, and at a particular point, our mentor said…good enough is good enough; you’ve got to stop editing and send it to the publisher; otherwise, it will never get done.
There were two things I learnt from this after sending it to the publisher.
I got a mental break. So much work went into writing and editing it felt good to stop and just let it go, and this mental break allowed me time to work on another project.
When I got it back from the publisher, I had plenty of time to do further edits, but I got the process started by sending it off.
My initial transcript went back and forth two or three times until all editing was complete, and it was then sent off to the printers.
That was a stressful day, and I remember thinking there was no turning back now.
Even to this day, nine years after publishing and with thousands of copies sold, there are a few things I would have liked to have changed. There are even a few errors in the book, but if I didn’t follow the good enough is good enough principle, my book would still be in my head and partially written on my computer.
Here’s something else I’d like to highlight.
In my writers’ group, only two of us out of the four stopped editing and sent it to the publisher as instructed. Both of us since then have also written and published a second book. The other two in the group, who didn’t stop editing and didn’t send it to the publisher, never had their books published.
I think we can all learn from this.
Having a good enough is good enough approach is the first step in getting projects completed, especially marketing projects.
Once completed, you’ll have time afterwards to make slight changes if needed, and with each change, you can test and measure the success of each change.
Testing and measuring are important and relate to understanding the numbers of your business. I did an episode on this, Episode 135 - The Importance of Understanding Your Numbers.
Your Team
To wrap up, I have one more item to discuss in relation to good enough being good enough.
So far, I've only discussed how it applies to marketing aspects of your business; however, this good enough is good enough approach can also be applied to your team.
We all like to think we're good at what we do, and if you've been practising for many years, it’s probably true; however, what happens when you employ someone else and they start treating your patients?
Firstly, this can be a stressful moment in your career, and secondly, it will drive you crazy if your push for perfection on a day-to-day basis, and I know this for a fact because I have done this in the past.
As I said in my opening comments, surgery is one of those times when perfection is required or as close to perfection as possible, as is sterilisation; however, your business will fail to grow at the rate it should if you focus on perfection with your team.
Yes, your team's communication skills may need improvement, and their KPIs may not be as good as yours in certain areas, but then again, they may be better than yours in others.
Would you chew yourself a new one if your team, out did you? No, you wouldn’t, so give your team the same allowances. Taking on a good enough is good enough approach in some aspects of your business will give you a mental rest, and this is a positive.
Last week in Episode 265, I mentioned you get what you tolerate, meaning if you allow poor behaviour or attitudes to continue, you only have yourself to blame.
I think it is important to point out that having a good enough is good enough approach to your business is not about tolerating poor behaviour; it’s about setting suitable and sustainable standards in your business and allowing a little wiggle room for growth and imperfection.
With a good enough is good enough approach, you will have more time with your family and be a better partner or parent, more time to pursue your hobbies, therefore less stress and more fun in your life, and you'll have more time to become a better mentor to your team, and when you become a better mentor to your team, your team will improve as a consequence. The overall standards of your business will increase.

297 - The Benefit of Early Career Wins with Cameron Bennet
00:58:35
Cameron Bennet is the owner of My Family Podiatry, a private practice on the north side of Brisbane, and he is passionate about providing the highest level of patient care and elevating the standard of the treatment supplied by podiatrists.
He initially worked in Tasmania and Brisbane for a big corporate company, which was great because he always knew he wanted to have his own business and thought this was the best way to gain experience as a podiatrist and seeing how a podiatry business was managed before heading out on his own.
In this episode, we cover:
Why new graduates underestimate their abilities early on in their careers.
Starting small and limiting your overheads when you first start your business.
Getting out there and educating referrers and the general public.
Employment mistakes. It's essential to get the right person that fits your team.
Having enough confidence to have a crack and not give up too early when treating patients.
Imposter syndrome and how it impacts our perception of ourselves in the healthcare arena. Our scope of practice far exceeds other allied health professionals.
The dirty 'S' word - Sales.
The importance of sales and sales scripts in healthcare. Sales scripts help to overcome feelings of doubt.
Some podiatrists don't like the word sales, but if you're rebooking patients, you're selling.
Building confidence through small wins.
Delivering confident treatment plans and transferring that to your patients with planned treatment pathways.

264 - BOOK REVIEW #4: Atomic Habits with James Clear
00:32:01
James Clear is a world-renowned habits expert, and in his book ATOMIC HABITS, he explains that when you want to make changes to your life, you don't need to think big, and you don't need to turn your life upside down. Instead, real change comes from making hundreds of small changes, which compound over time, resulting in significant change long-term.
Goals are essential; they give you direction, but goals alone will not get you where you want to be unless you've developed the proper habits in the background. This applies to every area of your life.
If you're looking for a podiatry business coach that will help you get sh#t done and turn your podiatry business into a profitable business enterprise, stop looking and let's talk. To kick things off, all you need to do is email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com and tell me a little about yourself and your business.
108 - Dr Patrick McEneaney You Can't Manage 10 Clinics Yourself
00:55:20
Dr Patrick McEneaney has grown his podiatry empire from three clinics to ten clinics in less than twelve months, and he has done it during COVID-19. Who Does That? One thing he has learnt is you cannot manage ten clinics yourself.
In addition to his ten clinics, he also employes 17 podiatrists with a total team of 73.
On this episode we discuss:
How he has managed to grow his business during COVID
The thought process behind this progression of growth
How he finds good doctors and then finds the clinic
Identifying patients that should be coming back for further treatment
Why you need to know your numbers. Not just what comes in, but how quickly accounts are being paid.
Why you need to connect with your patient
The importance of good communication. It's about drawing people into your conversation.
Why patients need to express themselves even if it has nothing to do with the problems.
We are not just diagnosticians.
Speeding through the consultation is not good for your business.
Why you can't manage ten clinics, you have to trust your team and let things go.
"Every time they make a decision, even if you don’t like the way they went about it, you’ve got to trust the end result is how you want it to be".
Final Tip
When you’re interviewing someone you’ve got to have a gut feeling they are a good fit. Hire them, pay them well and make sure you make time to train them properly.

Podiatry Business Coaching
If you want to own and operate a Thriving Podiatry Business, there are four vital pieces to the business puzzle.
Marketing - You need a well thought out marketing strategy, not just more tactics.
Systems - You need systems that will support your marketing strategy and your team.
Team - You need to develop a team culture that makes your work-life balance easier, not harder.
Diary - Your diary needs to be structured in a way that maximises patient numbers and increases daily profits.
You have two choices: There's the slow approach, where you learn by trial and error and do everything yourself, or you can fast-track your education and business success with one-on-one Business Coaching or join my next 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot group coaching program.
If you want to know more, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and we can set up a Zoom Call and have a quick chat to see if I can be of assistance.

128 - Dr Daniel Bonanno The World of Academia
00:51:59
Why does someone become a podiatry lecturer and academic? I've often pondered this question. My guest Dr Daniel Bonanno, Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University in Victoria, Australia, openly shares his podiatry journey and sheds some light on the academia world.
I can honestly say I learnt a lot doing this podcast interview, and it was all positive.
Daniel's teaching and research are focused on the effects and effectiveness of foot orthoses and footwear, walking and running biomechanics, and preventing and managing lower limb injuries.
He is currently undertaking some research on the Factors that Influence Basketball Footwear Selection, and he is keen to hear from any adult basketball players of any level, from recreational to elite.

In this special episode of the Podiatry Legends podcast, Tyson E. Franklin shares his recent experiences travelling through the UK with Jonathan Small.
From learning about the intricacies of local culture to discovering new perspectives on business, this episode is packed with valuable insights for podiatrists and business owners alike.
Grant Duong is an innovative and inspirational podiatry business leader, and he understands what is required to take your podiatry career and business from good to great. A limited mindset aims for good, but everyone can aim for great if they want it.
He is a partner in The Triumph Institute, which is a multidisciplinary business offering Podiatry, Chiropractic, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Law services, Academic Coaching and Cafe.
On this episode we discuss:
The importance of recruiting people into your team with the same positive energy, culture and mentality.
It's essential for the branding of your company.
Negative energy sucks the life and heart out of your business, which is why everyone has got to fit.
You need to innovate, implement and inspire.
Universities and Associations do not teach podiatrists how to run a business or the importance of systems.
Why you need to do 'what makes you great, not what makes you happy'.
Video games may make you happy, but it does not help others.
You need to become the best at what you can do, as a business owner and as an employee.
Selling the experience of visiting your business.
You need to analyse your systems and make sure they fit with the experience.
"When the business runs well, the owner is happy, and when the owner is happy, it increases morale at work, resulting in better patients experiences and better business".
Using Instagram for Patient Retention
Grant encourages his patients to follow him on Instagram, and he spends two or three 10-minutes blocks per day, evaluating hashtags and engaging with others on the platform.
He follows a lot of accounts with 1000 - 2000 followers because they are real, and he asked engaging question.
He will create a routine of different posts Monday to Friday on the Instafeed, (general feed), usually one post per day.
He encourages using the carousel (max ten posts)
Three Instagram Foundations
Use it to build a more significant base with warm leads (existing patients). This increases credibility.
Your credibility is useful for cold leads. People will look at your website and social pages, and when they find your IG page, your personality will ooze out.
Also helps you stay in contact with your existing patient base. You can see who engages with your photos and videos, and when they do, you can reach out and enquire how they are doing. (Brilliant)
Use Instagram Stories
Post short 15-second videos that only last for 24 hours. They are a great way to test content or trial a post. If you get 10% or more engagement, you can post about it in your general feed.
If there's no traction, don’t post about it.
On this podcast, Grant said that his Instagram name in @the_foot_mechanic; however, this has been changed to @grantfootdr.

082 - Dr Howard Dananberg Non-Surgical Treatment of Hallux Limitus
00:39:53
Dr Howard Dananberg explains that in the 1980s podiatrists didn't always work in the best hospitals and therefore complications with surgery was a possibility; therefore this made him start thinking and looking of alternative treatment options for common foot surgeries.
On this episode, Dr Dananberg and I take a journey through his early career and the research and discoveries he uncovered, which lead to his non-surgical treatment approach to hallux limitus.
"The way you to start thinking about Hallux Limitus is, it doesn’t hurt to move, it hurts because it doesn’t move when it should".
"Testing peroneal strength should be the first step in evaluating hallux limitus".
BIO: Dr Howard Dananberg graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1975. After his residency, he practised in Manchester, New Hampshire until 2012 when he retired.
He has received numerous awards for his work on sagittal plane biomechanics, including the Scholl's Award, Astra Award and MIT-Lemelson Inventor of the Week Award.
He has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and given lectures on this topic to podiatry, medical and physical therapy audiences around the world.

The Power of Persuasion: The Mindsets, Strategies, and Tactics that Enhance Leadership Success and Profitability with Dave Frees
This LIVE one-day event with Dave Frees will be life-changing. It is rare to have this calibre of speaker in Australia, let alone Cairns, so I suggest doing whatever you can to attend. There are only a limited number of seats available, so I would not sit on the fence too long.

001 - Tyson E. Franklin Explains The Podiatry Legends Podcast
00:09:32
This podcast aims to shed light on all the great things happening in our profession and who is doing them. I want to expose you to some of the fantastic career paths many podiatrists have taken, proving that you can do the same and even more. And along the way, we will have a few laughs.
Most of my guests are podiatrists; however, I do have some guests that are not because I also want to broaden our thinking.
If you’re a student or recent graduate wondering what the podiatry profession has to offer long-term, there is a lot if you want to open your eyes and mind.
If you’ve been in the podiatry profession for some time and feel tired, tuning in each week and listening to some of the fantastic stories may be the spark and motivation you need to pivot from your current path and take a different trajectory.
Who is Tyson E Franklin?
I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, in 1988 and over my 30-plus-year career, I have opened more than 20 successful podiatry businesses.
I made many mistakes in my career, but I also learned from them. If you're not making mistakes, you're also not challenging yourself or trying anything new.
Playing it safe is not the same as playing it smart.
I sold my last podiatry business in 2016, and since then, I've dedicated myself to podiatry business coaching, podcasting, writing and speaking. If you want to learn more about me and what I do, please visit my website www.tysonfranklin.com
Podiatry Scope Is Vast
As a profession, I think podiatry offers so much scope, more so than most. Hopefully, you'll be inspired to do more after listening to a few of my legendary guests.
They say the definition of insanity is to do the same thing repeatedly and expect a different result, so if you’re not 100% happy with what you do every day, you can change it.
If you have any questions about this podcast, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com
Also, if you know of any podiatrists doing amazing things in our profession, please have them email me.
All my podcast episodes are recorded and uploaded to my YouTube Channel - Tyson E Franklin.

00:49:53
In today’s digital world, anyone with a story to tell can become a published author—podiatrists included. FREE Business Guidance:
Do you have a business question? A podiatrist I spoke with in 2024 made an extra $40,000 by following my simple advice from a 30-minute FREE Zoom call. They were so happy they bought me a $400 bottle of bourbon. You don’t have to do that, but if you do, I won't say no!!!
Think about it – you have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Please follow the link below to my calendar and schedule a free 30-minute Zoom call. I guarantee that after we talk, you will have far more clarity on what is best for you, your business and your career.
319 - Dr Ivan Bristow Why Every Podiatrist Should Start Blogging
00:45:01
Dr Ivan Bristow, PhD, is a podiatrist who has been interested in dermatology for over thirty years. He has published over 100 papers on this subject, teaches it globally, and has a highly successful podiatry dermatology blog, www.foot.expert. He is passionate about promoting podiatry and dermatology to the profession and the public.
In this episode, we discuss the power of websites and blogs to promote our podiatry work and the profession as a whole and to help keep podiatry alive. If we don't write about foot problems, other healthcare professionals will, and we will lose that space.
You can connect with Dr Ivan Bristow on LinkedIn @ivanbristow, or you can email him at ivan@foot.expert.
Dr Ivan Bristow has also been on two other previous episodes:
Episode 168 – Foot Dermatology

If your podiatry business is currently up against a husband and wife team, this episode will help you understand why they may be kicking your arse.
Suppose you've considered working with your partner but have been put off because of all the negativity surrounding husbands and wives successfully working together. In that case, this episode will help you see all the positives and why there's magic in working together.
My wife and I worked successfully together for well over twenty years, and it was the best business decision we ever made, which is why I wanted to produce this episode because I knew our story was not unusual. There had to be others with the same success stories.
There are often difficulties in the first few years.
The importance of clearly defining your managerial and clinical roles.
Working together when big business decisions need to be made.
Managing others and the importance of values when you bring new people into your team.
The new skills you learn working together.
How working together adds an extra dimension to your relationship.
Takeaway Tips
Travelling to work in separate cars and having separate interests outside of podiatry gives you a little breathing space.
There's no better feeling than having someone in your business that you trust 100%.
The positives of working together far outway any of the negatives.

053 - Dave Cashley Making Sense of Neuroma Research
00:41:43
Dave Cashley owns Dundee Podiatry Clinic in Scottland. He has a special interest in lower extremity manipulation, and this interest has led Dave to publish and lecture extensively on this particular topic. He is now studying toward a PhD.
His research is based around the treatment of neuromas, doing a parallel study of manual therapy versus steroid injections.
The Best Thing About Neuromas
You don’t need any fancy kit to diagnose or treat it, other professionals stay away from it, and no one outside of podiatry gets good results.
It's a common, debilitating problem, and we can make a big difference in people’s lives.
On this episode we discuss:
Other treatment modalities and why Dave leaned towards manual therapy
Clinical biases - Are the results you’re getting in the clinic a fluke or the real deal.
Biased questioning to patients
Dave explains how research questions differ from what we would typically ask in a clinical situation
Minimal patient contact during research
How manual therapy became an interest and his connection with other podiatrists in this area
Why podiatrists should be making a decent income regardless of their area of interest. "If you have a paupers mentality, you will make a paupers wage".
If you’re struggling to make money, you need to get a mentor, and you need to change your mindset. "To find your destination you've got to get on the right bus".
Final Tip:
If you do not love life as a podiatrist have a look around and make some changes. Podiatry is one of the greatest professions on the planet.

In this episode, we discuss:
New Trends - Sensomotoric and Neuromuscular orthotics and why these are better?
Is support of the foot killing feet?
What if the best orthotic is the sole of some shoes, not the in-shie device?
If you would like to connect with Bronwyn, you can find her at Dr Foot Solutions.

018 - Scott Sorensen Biomechanics, Pressure Platforms & Milling Orthotics
00:33:15
In 2006, I decided to use pressure/scanning platforms in my biomechanical assessments and patient education, and this is how I met my guest Scott Sorensen. I contribute this technology as one of the main reasons why my podiatry business in Cairns stood out from the crowd and became a market leader.
Analogue versus Digital - Plaster Cast versus Scanning
Business efficiency
Creating a communication pathway. If they can see foot pressure and video it helps with communicating the message and information.
Orthotic education
Patient education - taking it to the next level
3D Scanning and printing
The differences, biomechanically speaking, between the UK, USA and Australia
Commercial integration
No One Remembers Who Came Second
You've got to have some mongrel in you and be willing to try these different techniques and different equipment, but you also do need to know when to walk away.
No one remembers who came second, so you can't keep waiting to see what your competition is doing and then try and copy them. Be a market leader in your area.
"Keep your overheads low it's a good foundation to start a business".
CADCAM Milling Machines
To have a mill installed in your podiatry practice, you need a specific skill base knowledge first. You need to be confident on a grinder and be able to make and understand orthotic adjustments.
Scott also recommends visiting his podiatry business in Noosa and see how the Bodytech Systems functions in a real clinical situation. You can also see how the CADCAM milling machines work.
BONUS: It's a great reason to visit Noosa and make it an educational and tax-deductible trip.
Australian National Podiatry Conference: 22-24 May
At the upcoming Australian National Podiatry Conference in Adelaide, Scott Sorensen, Paul Graham and I will have a booth (C5) in the Expo area.
If you have time, please come and visit us and together we will be able to answer any questions you have in regards to pressure platforms, scanning, orthotic milling machines and our upcoming WORKSHOP - Biomechanics & Business on the Gold Coast in June.
I will have my podcasting equipment set up and will be planning to release a short podcast episode at the end of each day, so please drop by for a quick podiatry chat.
I have set up a Podiatry Legends Facebook page, where I will be posting additional small business tips and information regarding podiatry events around the world. Check it out: Podiatry Legends Facebook Page.

Podiatry Business Coaching
Hi, I'm Tyson Franklin, and when it comes to one-on-one podiatry business coaching and mentoring, I believe I am the best in the business, and most importantly, I have a proven track record to back me up.

Suppose someone in your family needed medical treatment. Would you be happy if the treating doctor only gave them limited treatment options because they had a limited skill set, or would you prefer the doctor explained ALL the available treatment options, even if it meant they had to refer them to another doctor or specialist?
This is the basis of The LOVED ONE's Test.
Jonathan Small has appeared on this podcast nine times. I keep inviting him back because he delivers relevant, practitioner-driven content every time, and The LOVED ONE's Test is no different. He is also the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK.
In this episode, we discuss the following:
Informed Consent.
The Patient Experience.
Providing the best level of care.
Building trust with your patients through referrals, don't be afraid of losing patients.
Suppose you cannot treat a particular problem. In that case, it is better for the profession if you can refer them to another podiatrist that can treat the problem instead of referring them to a Physiotherapist or General Practitioner.
If you have any questions about this episode or Jonathan's Work Smarter, Not Harder 2-Day Workshop in 2023, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.

Podiatry Business Owners Club
Please visit my group, the Podiatry Business Owners Club, on Facebook if you want to connect with like-minded podiatrists who enjoy business.
What does Care Differently mean? If you want your business to be different, you've got to care about your clients differently, and giving them a discount does not mean you care; it only means you're trying to be cheaper than your competitor down the street. If you put your client's needs first, the rest of your business will fall into place naturally.
My guest, Jeff Peterson, is the owner of Interstate Music in Wisconsin, USA, an online music business with a Musician's First Mindset.
Jeff's marketing strategy with Interstate Music is mind-blowing and utterly different from how marketing is usually done in the music industry. It is pure genius, which is why he won the top honours at the Wisconsin Small Business Awards.
I've always said you should learn from what others are doing in different industries and ask yourself, how can I apply that in my business?
In this episode, Jeff and I discuss the following:
The power of storytelling and how it can emotionally connect with the receiver.
Human nature is about connectively. You either connect or don't connect with people, which can make everything or break everything in business relationships.
What makes a person think they are good enough in their career to lead the charge to be an expert in their industry?
Don't die with the music (or knowledge) still in you.
The benefits of sharing what you know with others.
You don't have to have all the answers.
Business didn't come naturally; it was something I had to learn.
When your business gets bigger, people will take potshots at you.
What Jeff learnt taking over a business that went into bankruptcy and the importance of understanding the numbers of a business.
Hire Good People
When you're looking for people to join your Team, you should hire good people, not good resumes. They either have it or they don't. If they don't, they're not for you.
Care Differently
You've always got to consider what your customers want and need and whether you can provide it. You cannot keep being the same as everyone else and expect a different result, and simply saying you care more or giving discounts to beat your competitors does not mean you do.
You need to show them you care more with your consistent actions. You must find out what truly matters to your customers and deliver on that.
At Interstate Music, they developed a Musician's First Mindset; they take what they do for a living and help them develop it further. They help them create content (video, photos, etc.) and work with them to develop their exposure in the industry.
By building authentic relationships with Musicians, Jeff and his Team at Interstate Music are building long-term trusting relationships within the music industry. If musicians buy their equipment from Interstate Music in the future…well, that's a bonus.
Do you have a Client First Mindset or are you focused on your needs?
Slow Bleed & Loss of Energy
If you focus too long on your competition and not on your own business, it is a death spiral and slow bleed for your business, especially if they are not spending time thinking about you.
Be aware of your competitors, and pay attention, but don't become obsessed.
Everyone gets into business for a reason, and there will always be some form of energy behind them making this decision. Don't waste your energy worrying about what everyone else is doing.
If you do, you won't have the energy to work on your own business.
Social Media
Don't use social media platforms just because someone else is doing it. Ask yourself, will this platform work for my business? Are my ideal clients using this platform? If they are, work on a long-term strategy to make it work for you, don't just follow what everyone else is doing.
The Power of Marketing
When we recorded this podcast (and YouTube video), Jeff and I were drinking a can of Liquid Death, which is just a can of water.
There's no screw top lid, which makes it slightly impractical and not very portable, but it is cool, and they have marketed it exceptionally well. Their tagline is 'Murder Your Thirst'.
Jeff and I agreed you don't have to do something new, but you need to market it better or differently.
How can you apply this idea to your podiatry business?
What can I do to charge a premium in my podiatry business?
Adapt Over Time
You should be evolving and adapting your business over time. You should be updating how you do things. You should always be looking for a different perspective. Staying the same while others are moving forward means you are falling behind.
You don't do this just for your patients; you're also doing this for your Team. They need to know they are in a progressive business.
Your Team needs to buy into your vision for the future.
Learn & Share
If you make a mistake or do something wrong, you've got to be able to work out why it was wrong and learn from it, and when you learn something new, share it with those that will listen.
Don't keep it as the best-kept secret.

194 - Dr Kent Hungerford Why Podiatrists Are Hesitant to Adopt New Technology
00:43:05
Dr Kent Hungerford is a Podiatric Surgeon from South Coast Foot Surgery in Shellharbour, New South Wales. This episode discusses why podiatrists are hesitant to adopt new technology. It's not just podiatry; the whole allied health professional is a little hesitant. On average, it takes 17-years from intervention discovery to widespread implementation. Shockwave has become very popular over the last 10-years; however, it was known around 40-years ago, and laser therapies have been in existence since the 1980s.
We also talk about:
The fear of trying something too early and being judged.
Social proof.
Looking at research.
Post-graduate education.
The price to adopt new technology can be a barrier.
Education is also a barrier, therefore put money into training and remove this barrier.
How to afford new technology and why you need to do this.
"The business needs to work for you so you can work for others to get them the outcome that they need in the most efficient way.”
Final Tip
It's up to you to look for better outcomes for your patients. Be open-minded, look at the research and see what is coming through. If you're unsure why someone is using something or if it works, find someone passionate about it and ask them questions.
