20 Feb 2024How I cut my podcast production time in half! (Using AI)00:33:33

TL;dr - just want the link to the tool that's mentioned in the episode?

https://podmastery.co/shownotes

The grind of show notes writing. Ugh!

We've all been there as podcasters - endlessly spinning our wheels, burning the midnight oil while editing, writing and publishing.

But guess what?

I've figured out how to hack my podcast production time in half, and I'm going to share the secret with you.

And yes, you'll perhaps be unsurprised to learn there's some AI involved in the mix.

Around six months ago, I discovered this tool that absolutely transformed how I get things done. It was recommended to me by a friend at a podcasting event, and roll forward to the next year, and it's well and truly integrated into my workflow.

But it's not just another AI tool; it's a genuine virtual assistant, banishing the grind of post-production show notes and admin to the podcasting desert.

By the time you've finished listening, you'll be armed with a solid grip on how to weave decent AI seamlessly into your own podcasting process.

I'll tell you all about the tools to avoid, too.

A game-changer for your podcast workflow

I'm talking major upgrades in efficiency and an arsenal of tricks to deliver knockout content that truly resonates with listeners.

We'll discuss why the long haul matters and how the 'compound interest of content' can launch your reach to new heights.

Let's ditch those fleeting chart metrics that I keep nagging you to ignore, and instead focus on building a rock-solid community and stretching your voice across multiple platforms for maximum impact and growth.

You'll get the inside scoop on how a true crime podcaster completely transformed their show with this tool, Cast Magic.

But don't just take my word for it!

Greg Wasserman joins me to share more insights on how AI can lift your productivity.

Here is the link to the tool, as promised in the episode - https://podknowspodcasting.co.uk/shownotessimplified

YouTube Podcasting: Step-by-Step Guide to Ingesting Your Podcast into YouTube

In this episode of "The Podmaster", I'm sharing the process of adding your podcast to YouTube using its simple ingest system.

If you're a Libsyn customer, you probably won't need to go through any of this because they offer an easy way to add your show using their destinations page, and a similar tool is planned for Captivate customers.

But in case you're needing to add your own podcast to YouTube, here I am walking you through it.

To start with, you'll need to go into your show settings to obtain your RSS feed from your podcast hosting company.

Then, make sure you're logged into your YouTube account.

You'll be using the YouTube Studio tab to create and upload your podcast.

It goes without saying this is audio, so if you're the kind of person that needs to follow along these steps, here's the video version.

I'll also be sharing my views on audiograms and offering you suggestions for a far better use of your time!

08 Nov 2022How to get your podcast into the Apple Podcasts 'chart' (without using scammy marketing or hiring a strategist)00:11:12

How you can make sure your podcast is a regular fixture in the Apple Podcasts 'chart'!

To take advantage of the offer mentioned in this episode, click here.

If you find yourself pulling your hair out trying to get into the Apple Podcasts 'chart' just like your competition are, then this is the episode for you!

In case you've been living in the dungeon beneath Joe Rogan's house for the past decade, this is the Apple Podcasts 'chart' explained in one sentence.

The Apple Podcasts 'chart' is a visual representation of some specific actions taken while accessing an RSS feed within the Apple Podcasts ecosystem.

The whole 'chart' and how it's compiled has forever been shrouded in secrecy.

Until recently.

Apple Podcasts themselves revealed exactly what the purpose of the chart is when it comes to public view. Sorta.

"Apple Podcasts Charts reflect the most popular shows and episodes available in a given market and are designed to help people discover what to listen to next. They do not reflect all-time listening records and are not a measure of the largest podcasts by listenership."

Here's the link to read that for yourself.

https://podcasters.apple.com/support/3146-apple-podcasts-charts

So, just how do you get into this elusive 'chart' of all podcast excellence?

I wouldn't believe everything you read about it elsewhere.

I wouldn't even believe Apple Podcasts themselves without question.

In case you want to get a bit more of an insight into that, and why I feel Apple Podcasts whole 'chart' system is problematic, you can watch this video here.

But for the purposes of this episode, I'm going to stick to the topic in hand.

How you can get your podcast into the Apple Podcasts 'chart'

What you'll hear:

  • How you can get into the chart - you DON'T need a strategist (0m47s)
  • How Steven Bartlett stay on top of the Apple Podcasts 'chart' (1m15s)
  • The 'chart formula' (02m39s)
  • The caveat (04m17s)
  • What DO you do to grow your podcast? (06m29s)

22 Jul 2024Learn your REAL podcast global ranking - NOT your listen score!00:14:18

Forget Listen Notes - this is how you learn your true ranking

It's one of the most perplexing and annoying parts of podcasting—understanding your podcast's global ranking.

Let's face it, it's a complicated mess.

You log into your host's dashboard, see some numbers, but what do they truly mean?

How do they stack up against others?

More importantly, how can you use this data to improve and maybe even monetize your show?

In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain and showing you how to decipher your podcast's performance against the global landscape.

Let's get one thing straight: a lot of the so-called ranking tools and sites out there are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Once you've heard this episode, you'll get why IAB downloads are just a piece of the puzzle and how individual hosting companies have their own methods that can distort your view.

(Here's a useful link that explains what IAB downloads actually are!

You'll learn that the so-called 'top 1%' status many flaunt might not be as genuine as it seems.

My team at Podknows Podcasting have created a global podcast ranking calculator that provides a more accurate measurement based on a realistic baseline.

Here it is:

Stick your download numbers in and see where you land.

Think of it as a way to gauge where you are and where you want to go.

27 May 2023The one podcast growth secret that got shared at the Podcast Show that you need to know!00:20:23

I attended the Podcast Show in London. And I hope after listening you appreciate my hilariously snarky title.

In this episode, I share my experiences of the two day event in full.

I braved the glossy façade of the Podcast Show in London so you didn't have to.

Listen as I uncover the good, the bad, and the hilariously ugly - from networking highpoints to cringe-worthy performances, and from ad tech giants' follies to the observations of the provisions for indie podcasting.

But it doesn't stop there...

Ever wondered if adding visuals to podcasts makes them...video podcasts? Prepare for an awkward moment you'll never forget.

Plus, my game - 'Crazy Claims?' where truth becomes blurred against fiction.

The Podcast Show may be a glossy affair, but I ain't here to sugarcoat.

Listen to experience a journey filled with raw passion, honest insights, and a healthy dose of disruptive skepticism.

Because at the end of the day, podcasting is all about authenticity, heart, and grit - not polished talks and glitzy ads.

Let's keep podcasting real.

The Art of Topic Selection in Podcasting

When prepping your episodes, have you ever felt like you're throwing darts in the dark, hoping one hits the bullseye?

Recording podcast episodes can feel just like that.

You've got ideas aplenty, but understanding which will hook your listener from the get-go seems like you're playing Jenga after a can of Special Brew.

I'm here to tell you it doesn't need to be a guessing game.

In this episode of "The Podmaster", we're covering what you really should be talking about in your podcast.

Trust me, once you've listened to this episode, you'll have more than just a good idea of how to lock in your audience – you'll know exactly what your listeners want, and how to deliver it with the kind of flair that keeps them coming back for more.

Basics first - research!

Now, let’s slice through the noise.

I tackle the essential groundwork every podcaster should do before even thinking about hitting record.

This isn't just another preachy lesson on marketing values or listener demographics; it's a practical guide to engraving your unique mark in the podcasting world.

Imagine knowing what your listener is eager to hear before they click on your episode.

We'll set you up to create content that not only draws in listeners based on current trends but also fits your authentic style and expertise.

No stabs in the dark here, you’ll be nailing that bullseye with precision every time.

Now, how does this apply to your situation as an aspiring or polished podcaster?

Suppose you find out your audience loves a particular type of storytelling.

Instead of figuring it out on episode 50, you’re strategically crafting content from episode one, optimising your chances of building a robust listener base from the start.

Use storytelling techniques to increase engagement

We'll also delve into the importance of integrating your personal experiences and stories.

Your podcast should not sound like a lecture read straight from a textbook.

Real engaging content comes from your own wins and losses, making it relatable and genuinely educational - a combination as irresistible to your listener as a cold beer on a hot day. But not a Special Brew.

Seriously.

That stuff's strong.

Getting the voice right

Sorry, not sorry - quality content needs quality delivery!

Nobody wants to listen to an uninspiring drone.

You'll learn how to deliver your awesome content in a way that doesn't just convey information but energises your audience.

Got nerves about your on-air charm?

Don’t fret.

I've got tips on how to enhance your podcast personality or pair up with a co-host to cover the bases.

Envision turning every episode into an opportunity for interaction, making your listeners feel part of the journey, not just passive consumers. And here’s the kicker - I talk you through setting up recurring features, transforming your podcast into a living, evolving entity with its own memorable quirks.

By the time you hit the pause button on this episode, you’ll not only have identified what to talk about but you'll be equipped to package it in a way that is both informative and downright enjoyable.

So, if you’re pacing around wondering what the secret sauce to podcasting success is, let me bring that chaos to an ordered halt.

Click play, get the skinny, and start 'making wavs' (or mp3s if you prefer) in the podcasting world.

Remember, this isn’t about shooting in the dark anymore; it’s about becoming the strategic sharpshooter who knows exactly what to aim for.

Now, let’s get talking.

03 Jan 2025Is Video Podcasting About To Kill The Audio Podcast Star?00:07:06

Welcome to this episode of "The Podmaster" which delves into the continuing debate around the trend of 'video podcasts' and whether we need to take it more seriously in 2025.

The article that inspired this episode is this one from Vulture - https://www.vulture.com/article/will-video-kill-the-audio-star-in-2025

Hi, I'm Neal Veglio, The Podmaster, and I want to open this topic by acknowledging that I'm an OG in podcasting and massively fond of its origins as an audio format.

Audio podcasts have traditionally provided a unique intimacy and portability for listeners.

However, with the recent surge in popularity of video podcasts, spearheaded by influential figures like Joe Rogan, there’s a palpable shift in how creators engage with their audiences.

So I'm posing a critical question: Is the move towards video a genuine evolution in the medium, or merely a passing trend?

And talking of video podcasting, is Spotify trying to muscle in on YouTube's turf?

Hook 'em, or lose 'em!

Storytelling is the secret sauce that can turn your podcast from a snooze fest into a gripping adventure, and trust me, most podcasters are missing the mark big time.

I mean, if you’ve ever listened to a podcast that made you want to claw your ears off, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

In this episode, I'm sharing insights around the art of storytelling, breaking down the essential structure that’ll keep your listeners hanging on your every word instead of scrolling through TikTok.

We’ll explore why your brain craves stories, how to avoid sounding like a monotone robot, and the magic of sound design that can elevate your episodes.

30 Sep 2022The Podmaster Ponders - Wait, so people are shocked brands do this to get audience?00:05:26

I wasn't planning on publishing this one today, but I'm so staggered on this news story I couldn't resist.

I literally felt like a plus-sized model chaser who's been getting head from Ashley Graham for two whole minutes. (Ok, I'd have probably felt like that closer to forty five seconds into it these days...)

I had the audio up in Adobe Audition, and I was past the point of no return.

And here we are.

Some bonus content released before the first full episode featuring Marcus Sheridan.

Thanks to an article from Ashley Carman in Bloomberg, everyone is in up in arms about iHeartMedia doing something that's seen as a bit shady by the whole world.

Mostly because many podcasters are the definition of participation trophy children.

This whole story further confirms for me a worrying theory I have about not just podcasters, but particularly those people who would seek to coax money out of poor unsuspecting victi.... sorry, 'clients' for 'professional podcast marketing' services.

I mean, there were some pretty high profile podcast people getting all bent out of shape about this on social media.

It was really quite embarrassing.

Anyway, this bit of ranting contains:

  • Why you shouldn't be surprised by this 'news' about iHeartMedia's marketing strategy (which is definitely not as smart as it might seem)
  • Why you can expect more of these kinds of revelations (and why you should ignore them!)
  • What you've needed to know for your whole podcasting life, or get clear on before you start!

Making Money in Podcasting: Tips and Tricks for Podcasters

In this episode of The Podmaster I'm going to talk about how to make money from a podcast!

Hi, I'm Neal Veglio, founder of Podknows Podcasting. And for more than 20 years I've been experimenting with podcasts. Along the way, I've learned a thing or two about how to help people like you grow podcasts legitimately, with highly targeted real listeners. Not bots from clickfarms.

And that brings us nicely on to this episode's topic - how to monetise that audience once you've connected with it.

Get ROI from your podcast

Are you pouring your heart, soul, and possibly the contents of your wallet into a podcast but can't seem to find that sweet spot where your labour of love actually starts to love you back... monetarily?

Well, if you're about to chuck your microphone out the window in sheer frustration, hold on a mo.

You're about to get the equivalent of a podcasting lightning bolt up the arse from yours truly, The Podmaster.

You see, this episode isn't just another ramble through the world of podcasting for beginners; it's a meaty, juicy, potentially wallet-fattening dose of podcast monetisation advice.

And by the end of this, you'll know exactly what options are on the table.

You're going to learn the difference between a podcast being a cash vacuum and a cash generator.

What does work then?

Methods for monetisation in podcasting

Stick it out, as I map out a strategy that goes beyond the humdrum of CPM rates that'll have you earning more per listener than most podcasts with pre-roll ads longer than their actual content.

And it doesn't matter if you're well-known or niche.

And if after listening you'd like to talk about how I help people like you to turn their listeners into customers who'll be excited to give you their money, book in for a free call with me.

Timestamped summary:

00:00 Maximise ad revenue without upsetting listeners.

03:17 Utilise mid-roll ad for own services.

06:49 Podcast content value varies, worth considering investment.

10:22 Unlimited earnings from podcasting, invest in marketing.

Unveiling the truth behind podcast growth TACTICS

Contains strong language so don't listen if you're a sensitive little soul.

When we’re talking about podcast promotion, most of us have one clear idea in our heads of what that looks like.

It’s grabbing a clip of our show, and then either popping that on social media, natively if it’s a video clip, and with a waveform and image if it’s audio only.

But that’s not going to help you grow your podcast audience.

Leveraging platform audience to build your own audience.

It just won’t.

For one thing, these platforms don’t want you stealing their members away from them, and so any kind of link or landing page share is going to result in your post’s reach being tanked. So how DO you market your podcast on social media?

This is where I’m drafting in Mark Asquith, co-founder of Captivate.

Leveraging Social Media for Podcasting

Let's talk social media - a tool that can help foster these genuine connections when used properly. Threads has barely been out for a week, and already the conversation in our space has been all about how to use it to grow podcast audience.

Mark Asquith compares Instagram Threads to the early days of Twitter. Simplicity and nostalgia - a combination that could certainly appeal to the masses. But Mark is quick to approach the topic cautiously, highlighting the truth that many miss… these platforms are not to be solely used as promotional machines.

'Feed drop'

Despite the plethora of communication channels we have today, podcasters need to have the fundamentals of marketing in their arsenal. After all, wielded right, the power to communicate effectively can work wonders. Solid marketing principles not only helps one assess their content and audience correctly but also guides in making strategic decisions to affect growth positively.

In his most recent episode, Mark Asquith talked about the myth of the 'magic wand effect' many so-called marketing gurus claim to possess.

His words resonated with me so much, I abandoned my plans to create my own podcast episode about this topic, and instead decided to share and amplify his.

So here’s a ‘feed drop’ of his episode of “The Podcast Accelerator” in which he shares more on this topic.

Is video podcasting an uneven playing field for women?

As more and more creators incorporate video elements into their podcasts, the unique challenges faced by women can't be ignored.

From societal beauty standards to issues of confidence, we delve into whether the current environment is fair and what measures we can take to level the field.

If you're curious about how these dynamics impact content creation and what can be done to foster a more inclusive space, this episode is for you.

Our discussion covers several critical aspects.

You'll hear about the extra pressures women face when appearing on camera, such as the need to always look 'camera-ready', which involves dealing with hair, makeup, and lighting in ways that men often don't.

We'll also explore how these pressures can affect the quality of the content itself, steering focus away from substance and towards superficial elements.

Plus, we offer practical tips for women podcasters to navigate this challenging landscape.
