18 Dec 2023 | Smiley Miley inspires Full Ham win and Langley's lasses finish 2023 unbeaten | 00:51:35
We're coming to you just 24 hours before Eddie Howe's men take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter finals and despite the best efforts of our resident gremlin, Chris Waugh.
A three-nil win at home to Fulham would be a nice result under any circumstances, but after European heartbreak in midweek, and with an unwelcome setback in our previously relenting injury crisis, it was a magnificent effort.
Lewis Miley got his first senior goal to break the deadlock and teammate Sean Longstaff was full of praise for his junior colleague, and Becky Langley's women won 11-3(!) to round off the calendar year unbeaten(!!!).

22 Dec 2023 | End of the Year Pod: 2023? Great, actually | 01:21:42
Once again, we assembled in Newcastle for our Christmas drinks special with the magnificent Strawberry pub playing host to an elite audience of friends, relatives, loved ones, and Others.
Eddie Howe's men suffered heartbreak at Chelsea on Tuesday night, but we're banishing negativity with a look ahead to the festive fixtures and that date with Sunderland in the new year.
It seems everyone associated with Newcastle United is getting a bit tired and emotional, so we also celebrate a late Thanksgiving by remembering our personal highlights of 2023.

01 Aug 2023 | We're back! But can we pull it off twice a week? | 01:04:29
Pod on the Tyne returns for the 2023/24 season with Taylor Payne, a jet-lagged George Caulkin, and Chris Waugh holding the fort while Jacob Whitehead sticks another shrimp on the barbie down under, mate.
There's so much to catch up on, it's a good thing the show will now be coming to you twice a week! But, in this episode we hear all about George's escapades in the US, including a tailgate party and a long overdue chat with Shay Given.
There's so much excitement in the air, it's a great time to announce our first ever live show at the Gosforth Civic Theatre on 12th October. Get your tickets here: https://www.gosforthcivictheatre.co.uk/pod-on-the-tyne-live-2023

03 Aug 2023 | Livramento Deal PodBombs First Thursday Show | 00:51:57
Taylor Payne, George Caulkin, and Chris Waugh make history with the inaugural Thursday edition of The Athletic's Newcastle United podcast, but it looks like breaking news will still ruin our recordings with a deal for Tino Livramento announced, honestly, ten minutes after we finished talking.
The highly-rated Southampton fullback looks to be a long-term project as he recovers from a knee injury, and it just so happens that we are looking at Eddie Howe's defensive options today.
We also examine the ticketing controversy earlier in the week and George looks back on the New Jersey leg of his US trip before the Sela Cup rounds off our pre-season this weekend.

07 Aug 2023 | Are We Ready, Eddie? | 00:39:34
Taylor Payne looks back at the last weekend of pre-season action for Eddie Howe's men with George Caulkin and Chris Waugh.
Newcastle raised the Sela Cup on Sunday after wins against Fiorentina and Villareal but, with new signings Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali on the pitch, and Tino Livramento in the stands, the primary goal was integration.
A positive win for Becky Langley's NUFC Women rounded off the weekend nicely, and everything feels good going into the new season... not that you'd know it listening to George.
Thanks also to everyone who bought tickets to our live show on October 12th at Gosforth Civic Theatre. That event is now SOLD OUT!

14 Aug 2023 | Fluid Midfield, Liquid Football: NUFC Thrash Villa | 00:44:22
The Athletic's Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead join Taylor Payne to review Newcastle United's magnificent 5-1 victory over Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Sandro Tonali wasted no time getting on the scoresheet as he took to English football like an anatra to acqua, and Eddie Howe's midfield looks to have an added dimension with the Italian joining Bruno and Joelinton in the engine room.
Alexander Isak was another of several standout performances with two for him, and Harvey Barnes got an assist and a goal in just 22 minutes on his competitive debut.

21 Aug 2023 | View from the Bridge: Slick City, Adidas Oops, and Karen Klopp | 00:41:59
Taylor Payne gets into the nitty gritty of Newcastle's 1-0 defeat at Manchester City with Jacob Whitehead and Chris Waugh.
Were Eddie's men under-par or was it simply a case of being out-passed and out-thought by the best in the business? Still, at least they got their game on! Serious disappointment for Becky Langley and the women's team.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp wants to speak to the manager again. Will Mac Allister be available at SJP on Sunday?

28 Aug 2023 | Red Card(s), Red-Faced, Red Raw... Red Flag? | 00:48:46
It's the morning after the terrible night before and Taylor Payne, George Caulkin, and Chris Waugh have still got that frightening feeling, the haunting memories of late losses to Liverpool in games we should have won.
So, how did it happen, do the Reds really have the wood over Newcastle, and will it always be this way or is it simply that Eddie Howe's team has not yet reached that stage of their development?
Brighton next, who we have a mixed record against, a few transfer tidbits plus news of a good opening win for the lasses and an Athletic Live Room this Thursday for the Champions League draw.

10 Aug 2023 | PotT Predictions 2023-24: Hopefully Howe's men are in better shape than us! | 00:55:11
It's the dawn of the new Premier League season but you find Taylor Payne, George Caulkin, and Chris Waugh in a state of disarray, so much so that we can't even get through the apology for the last episode's disastrous start!
We're supposed to be making our predictions for the season to come with contributions from Twitter, but George barely predicts anything and Chris (deliberately?) answers an entirely different question from the one Taylor asks him.
Onto the opening day fixture against Villa then, and it's our idea of Eddie Howe's first line-up... or is it the team we want to see... or maybe a bit of both. Frankly, it's a minor miracle you're even listening to this at all (hopefully you are).

17 Aug 2023 | Intense Identity: Taking Things Up a Level | 00:46:56
Taylor Payne, George Caulkin, and Jacob Whitehead are bringing a little extra intensity to this, our third ever Thursday edition.
There's great news from the Alan Shearer Foundation who opened their newly renovated outdoor space thanks to a donation from the Newcastle United Supporters Trust. Meanwhile, Chelsea left-back Lewis Hall looks like he might become the club's latest addition; Jacob gives us the rundown on his abilities.
We also talk to summer arrival Amber-Keegan Stobbs about the upcoming season opener for the women's team and look ahead to the men's game at Manchester City on Saturday night.

24 Aug 2023 | Attack of the Clones: Squad Depth, Not-worky Tickets, & Social Media | 00:35:56
Taylor Payne hosts your favourite Newcastle United podcast with The Athletic's Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead. Unfortunately, George Caulkin was forced to withdraw at the 11th hour with an oppressive work schedule, so we have been forced to take drastic measures!
The signing of Lewis Hall was confirmed this week, and that may conclude the acquisitions to Eddie Howe's squad in this window. A versatile operator, Hall is the second Chelsea Academy graduate to arrive in August.
Onto the Liverpool game, and tensions have arisen this week with fans not over the moon about ticketing decisions and Bruno Guimaraes responding angrily to a tweet about the Manchester City game. Let's hope we're all United come Sunday.

05 Sep 2023 | Running on empty? Sir Brendan Foster re-energises the pod | 01:00:40
After Newcastle's uncharacteristically fragile performance on Saturday, Taylor Payne analyses the defeat at Brighton with George Caulkin and Jacob Whitehead.
But, if there's a better guest to put some spring back into our steps, then we don't know who it would be. Sir Brendan Foster is a titanic sporting figure and, just a few days before the 43rd Great North Run, he joins us to talk about the event's great success, Sir Bobby Robson, and doing laps of Wembley.
A great start to the season for NUFC women, whose new signings are settling in very quickly, and an international break for the men with our fandom, and George, ready for a brief change of scenery.

George Caulkin reports from Milan as Newcastle United return to Europe, to the Champions League, and to the San Siro with a midweek fixture away to AC Milan.
Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and Jacob Whitehead review three vital Premier League points after Eddie Howe's men beat Brentford again to regain some crucial momentum going into the UCL group stage.

It was the club's biggest ever away win in league football and, for the first time in Premier League history, eight different players scored.
Next up, the trifling matter of Manchester City in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Without anything else to be negative about, Chris rails against the concept of sponsorship.

13 Sep 2023 | Milan Sandwich.... Judging the Pace Right for a Huge Week | 00:50:17
George Caulkin and Chris Waugh join Taylor Payne for our second show of the September International Break with Jacob Whitehead incapacitated after a slight pace misjudgement in the baking North East weather on Sunday's Great North Run.
There's no room for error for Eddie Howe, aka the man in black, as he readies his men for a gigantic week with crucial Premier League fixtures sandwiching a midweek trip to Milan in the Champions League.
NUFC's Women have been, necessarily, flawless so far this season. We've a report on their victory over Stoke City as a storm broke over Kingston Park, an update on Saudi Arabia's friendly games at St James's Park (a mis-step?), and a glimpse at the new Stack Fan Zone below the Gallowgate

28 Sep 2023 | Carabao REaction: Burst of Ferocity beats Pep | 00:44:41
Taylor Payne reviews the Carabao Cup Third Round win over Manchester City with George Caulkin and perennial chip-pisser Chris Waugh.
Eddie Howe made ten changes including a home debut for teenager Lewis Miley and, while the youngsters performed admirably, City dominated first-half possession at St James's Park.
But, the game changed with half-time subs Bruno and Gordon triggering a furious burst of pressure resulting in a goal for Isak that sealed the tie. Our reward is a trip to Old Trafford in the next round, but next we host Burnley in the league.

02 Oct 2023 | Burnley Dispatched; Bring On PSG | 00:55:47
Taylor Payne brings you our Monday show with George Caulkin and Jacob Whitehead celebrating football's sexiest two words... we'll whisper them into your ear.
Paris Saint-Germain getting relegated from Ligue 1 is about as likely as Jacob winning Masterchef, but Peter Rutzler, THE RELEGATOR, joins us for our Champions League preview so maybe he can help us put them into the Europe League.
All that, plus the latest madcap victory in a great start to the season for NUFCW, several misguided animal metaphors, and an inquiry into potential phone-w*nkery.

09 Oct 2023 | "Queen" Isak wins us a point at West Ham | 00:45:20
Full house again on our last podcast before we go live to the geordie nation at Gosforth Civic Theatre on Thursday night.
Alexander Isak flipped a tired performance on its head with two goals as Eddie Howe's men came from behind to lead West Ham at the London Stadium. Unfortunately, they couldn't see out the game, but a point feels pretty good after a momentous week and we're in decent shape going into the international break.
No such problems for the women's team. Bridget Galloway kept her magical run going as Becky Langley's lasses ran out comfortable winners at Liverpool Feds; they will take a 100% record into their home game with unbeaten Burnley on Saturday.
(Jacob's article on Alexander Isak referenced in the show can be found at: https://theathletic.com/4531978/2023/08/08/alexander-isak-explosion-newcastle/)

23 Oct 2023 | Stroll through Palace on our grounds sets up Dortmund date | 00:46:31
Taylor Payne is playing mediator, albeit not a very neutral one, with George Caulkin and Chris Waugh at loggerheads. Could it be the least interesting feud in history?
Perhaps we're restless because everything is going so well on the pitch. Crystal Palace were no match for Newcastle at St James's Park on Saturday; Dortmund should provide a stiffer test on Wednesday.
Becky Langley's NUFC Women also strolled to victory on Sunday and there was a heartening reception for Sandro Tonali with news imminent on his punishment for illegal betting.

Live from the Gosforth Civic Theatre in the heart of *checks notes* Newcastle's most middle class suburb, it's our stage debut!
With special guest Alan from Work(!!!!), Taylor and the boys look back at a magnificent two-year spell since the takeover and rejoice in last week's battering of Paris Saint-Germain.
Please note; although a lot of saucy audience-only stuff has been removed (including the whole of part two, a live Q&A) this podcast still has some tasty language, even by our grubby standards.

19 Oct 2023 | Tonali Update, Burnley Stalemate, & Palace Preview | 00:43:42
We're all together again for our only podcast of the week, and our first opportunity to react to the huge news that Sandro Tonali has been implicated in an illegal betting scandal from his time in Italy.
Details are emerging in waves, albeit at a hectic pace, but it looks like Tonali will face a lengthy ban from football. We consider the implications for the player himself and for the team and the club.
Not many goals to talk about on the pitch: it was a slightly disappointing result for Becky Langley's women, despite a dominant performance against league leaders Burnley, and nil-nil is often the score when Crystal Palace visit in the Premier League.

26 Oct 2023 | We'll always have Paris... Dortmund put the dampeners on our CL party | 00:49:09
A poorly Taylor Payne holds court with Chris Waugh, George Caulkin and, for the last time in his official capacity as a full-time Newcastle reporter, Jacob Whitehead.
It's no inquest, though. A physical Borussia Dortmund, with a plan, and one or two injury blows threw us slightly off our stride, which is enough to make the difference at the elite level.
With Tonali's ten month ban now confirmed, we will take a depleted squad to Wolverhampton hoping for three Premier League points with no more injuries.

29 Nov 2023 | Mardy Mardi: PSG Pick Our Pockets for Point | 00:47:45
Taylor Payne is not a happy man; he's a bit less not happy than he was 24 hours ago, but not by much. Joining him to digest the indigestion of an ultimately unhappy evening in Paris are Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead.
Kylian Mbappe's penalty rescued a point for Paris Saint-Germain in Champions League Group F, but that doesn't even begin to cover the shock of a 98th minute VAR decision that seemed impossible given what had come before.
Did that moment steal the thunder of Newcastle's remarkable two-part performance? In the first half they pressed and pestered and scored a crucial goal through Isak. Then, as the eleven men tired and with no viable subs, they repelled waves of PSG attacks before that stunning final twist of the knife.

02 Nov 2023 | UNITED!!! | 00:52:26
An epic road trip, a sensational performance by Newcastle's second (& third?) string, and a moment of pure catharsis for more than seven thousand geordies. Powered by Carabao, this is Pod on the Tyne!
Valentino Livramento has started two games this season and has won the man of the match award on both occasions, but with Kieran Trippier driving Newcastle forward, how can we make better use of our starlet?
There were so many magical stories, Emil Krafth's return, Gordon up top, and Lewis Hall scoring his first senior goal, and how(!), as Newcastle's seventeen fullbacks made a mockery of Manchester United on their home turf. This team continue to defy the odds, there's every chance they'll do so again when Arsenal come calling on Saturday.

08 Nov 2023 | Pod on the Rhine, or One Banger short of a Sausagefest | 00:57:00
It's the morning after the night before and Taylor Payne and Chris Waugh are in Dortmund, with George Caulkin tuning in from our London bureau.
Not the result we wanted from Signal Iduna Park; Newcastle started slowly and could never gain the upper hand against a Borussia side who showed their experience once again.
But, let's not forget (on the second anniversary of Eddie Howe's appointment), sobering results like this are now a rarity and despite the Premier League's worst list of absences, the squad will pick themselves up and take everything they've got to Bournemouth on Saturday... unlike Chris.

30 Oct 2023 | Howe's brickwork withstands Wolves... but how are the Devils? | 00:46:00
The lads are getting used to life without Jacob, which will be the case for about ten days, and Chris is less than thrilled about having to restart work with a Caulkin road trip!
Two more Callum Wilson goals brought a creditable point at Wolves but, with Eddie's Mags down to the bare bones, nerves might be jangling on the way to Old Trafford; especially if George's trip to Morrisons yields all the Carabao he's promising.
Becky Langley's lasses got "League Cup week" off to a good start, though, with a superb home win against Forest (albeit not the home home they expected).

06 Nov 2023 | Casualties & VAR: NUFC dropping like flies but can't stop winning | 00:48:02
A (very) familiar face joins the crew to look back at another remarkable win for Eddie Howe's men, who defied a mounting injury list to deliver another home clean sheet and three points against Arsenal.
An intensely fought contest didn't provide much by way of chances for either side, but Anthony Gordon's second-half strike survived three VAR investigations, provoking an as post-match rant from visiting manager Mikel Arteta.
Next up, a trip to Germany and a Tuesday night teatime kick-off in a pivotal Champions League Group F fixture.

13 Nov 2023 | Thrilling chapter ends with Bournemouth defeat but things aren't getting any easier! | 00:54:48
Look, we're all tired. The players, the staff, the fans, even the podcasters have had enough. Defeat at Bournemouth prompted an outpouring of emotion, a cry of frustration, made more painful because the loss wasn't anybody's fault.
But, with the turning of a page, can we expect a fresh burst of energy? Unfortunately, given how crowded the physio room is, and how busy the fixture list, it doesn't look like things are getting much easier any time soon.
On the upside, the women's team keep churning out results, and the men have an international break when most of them will get a rest of some sort.

27 Nov 2023 | Three keepers, four Academy lads, and two grown-ups. No problem! | 00:40:40
Newcastle's bench against Chelsea showed how many players we are missing, but that didn't seem to matter too much as Gordon, Isak and co breezed through the Blues' swiss-cheese defence at will.
Lewis Miley also showed why the club's transfer policy was adapted to give him a first team squad role this season. He becomes Newcastle's youngest ever assister of a Premier League goal.

04 Dec 2023 | Another win over Man United: no big deal | 00:50:02
Eddie Howe's Newcastle United side, with at most fourteen fit first-teamers, barely got out of second gear in beating Manchester United at St James's Park.
Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and Jacob Whitehead review what is now a routine scenario, consider the FA Cup draw at Sunderland, and celebrate the women's team topping the table.
The men's team head to Everton on Thursday night when Jacob will be watching Anthony Gordon closely and the rest of us will be hoping Isak can recreate his freakish dribble.

11 Dec 2023 | Going South: Spurs slog makes for imperfect Milan prep | 00:47:37
Taylor Payne and Chris Waugh are safe in the North East for our weekend review, with George Caulkin making the unexpected decision to broadcast from a building site in central London.
We have another dispiriting display to look back at, with Eddie Howe's knackered Mags downed 4-1 by a Spurs side whose "injury crisis" pales by comparison. Better news from Gateshead, where Becky Langley's women made it to the fourth round of the FA Cup and a potential meeting with the big hitters of the WSL.
Next up, a Champions League Group F finale with AC Milan coming to St James's Park on Wednesday. The atmosphere should be electric, but can that re-energise the players or will Leao and co spoil the party?

08 Dec 2023 | Blue Thursday: Can Trippier and Co. bounce back at Spurs? | 00:48:19
The prodigal grandad returns! George Caulkin is back, which is good, because we need numbers to comfort each other with our resident Evertonian is on the smugpath. Newcastle lost at Goodison Park, deservedly so, but can we bounce back at Spurs on our own little Super Sunday?
Captain Lascelles hobbled into the changing room on Thursday: hopefully Eddie Howe can get some reinforcements soon because bare bones was about five injuries ago. Chris updates us on the rehabbers... twice.
And we celebrate the glimmer of light that was Lewis Miley, arguably Newcastle's best player in the first half on Merseyside.

06 Feb 2025 | Another Eddie Howe masterclass for Arteta's Arsenal | 01:29:04
Just when you thought it was safe for Arsenal to go back to St James's Park, Eddie Howe's Newcastle United delivered another performance of exquisite intensity to cast aside any nervous energy and cruise into another Carabao Cup final.
Highlights included a line-up that looked like a low block back five, but actually saw two of the three centre halves charging upfield to harangue and harass Arsenal's midfield, as well as Alexander Isak making a mockery of Europe's best defensive partnership... again.
Liverpool or Spurs await in the final, but we don't care who it is, we're the underdogs turned dead-eyed assassins of NUFC.

14 Dec 2023 | Champions League or bust: Howe's men go out on their shields | 00:50:39
Taylor Payne is joined by the world's unlikeliest hoody-wearer, George Caulkin, and Nostra-doofus Chris Waugh, to look back at the last emotional rollercoaster of our Champions League campaign.
The Group of Death went to the death, but sadly it wasn't to be as our desire to stay in Europe's premier competition saw us concede to a Milan counter-attack and exit European competition entirely.
Fulham are next and, while they have some good recent form, their away record is much like Newcastle's... bad. Huge excitement for Becky Langley and the women's team, though, as they booked a trip to Manchester in the Adobe Women's FA Cup.

10 Feb 2025 | Newcastle: the cup specialists reborn? | 00:54:19
FA Cup weekend brought mixed fortunes for Newcastle United's senior teams; Eddie Howe's men emerged victorious, but by no means unscathed, from a trip to Birmingham while the women's team fought valiantly and competed but were deservedly beaten by WSL outfit Crystal Palace.
Eddie Howe rotated his squad at St Andrews, with only Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn retained from the starting eleven that beat Arsenal in midweek. Two goals from Joe Willock and one on his Newcastle FA Cup debut (!) from Callum Wilson were just about enough in what became a bruising encounter.
The Lasses(TM) don't play again until March when they'll need to get straight back to winning ways if they are to have any chance of promotion, but The Lads are off to the Emirates this weekend with their best chance of a result in an awfully long time. WE are feeling good about that, and about our chances in the FA Cup, which has opened up nicely for Howe and co.

18 Feb 2025 | A Nightmare on Etihad Street: another alarming off-day | 00:58:00
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Manchester... City stuttering, Newcastle striding into the Carabao Cup final and skipping over Birmunum banana skins...Oh no!
Eddie Howe and the club both have terrible track records at the Etihad, but this goes down as one of the most disappointing performances for either. Beaten in duels, unable to make a pass, and with a distinctly buttery defence up against the hot knife that was Omar Marmoush and friends.
Everything HAS to be significantly improved for the Nottingham Forest game on Saturday or Champions League football next season will be a pipe dream.

24 Feb 2025 | Beating Forest 4-3 and why it's good, actually | 01:03:12
Newcastle United were, at one time, primarily famous for being on the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline; now, somehow, we're regretting being on the right end of one...
That might seem contradictory but the nature of Sunday's win (against one of our main Premier League rivals, remember) was a trademark burst of St James's Park energy followed by the exhale of a loose accordion.
BUT win we did, Lewises Hall and Miley were both class, and some pressure has eased off our midweek trip to the champions-elect at Anfield, a game that will have more subtext than George's last trip to see Swedish cinema (and we're not talking about Alexander Isak's 50 goals).

03 Mar 2025 | Pre-Carabao calamity: the Seagull sequel | 01:03:17
Newcastle fans were left with a vomit-inducing case of deja vu on Sunday after the final home game before the Carabao Cup final saw another day of injury and insult.
Lewis Hall was ruled out of the FA Cup tie vs Brighton and has consulted with a specialist, leaving his fitness in doubt, while Anthony Gordon saw red, and saw red; he now faces a three-match ban which would include the trip to Wembley.
As if that weren't enough, Danny Welbeck booted us out of the FA Cup as well and we're scratching around for positives. Perhaps Isak's perfect pen, or Dan Burn collecting the Bobby Robson award, or The Lasses' home win.

11 Mar 2025 | Hope in our hearts after West Ham win | 00:51:10
Eddie Howe celebrated enthusiastically after the final whistle at the London Stadium. While it may not have been much of a spectacle, the 1-0 win (with a goal from captain Bruno Guimaraes) represented a real boost to the team's confidence.
The preceding week had seen gut punch after gut punch... Anthony Gordon's suspension for the Carabao Cup Final (which will not be appealed) was followed by serious injuries to Lewis Hall and Sven Botman and fans had to suffer another season ticket price rise as well.
CEO Darren Eales addressed the media on various matters and assured all attendees that Alexander Isak, Eddie Howe, and progress on infrastructure were all top priorities for a committed ownership group. Now, the club faces table-toppers Liverpool for a chance to make history.

25 Mar 2025 | The Lasses' derby double: record attendance at St James's Park | 01:04:32
Newcastle United's women completed a derby double, beating Sunderland in the home fixture at St James's Park with a crowd of almost forty thousand watching on.
Substitute Shania Hayles was the scorer, her tenth in the league this season, as The Lasses (TM) retained local bragging rights with a one-nil win which also keeps their slim title and promotion hopes alive.
Meanwhile, in order to come to terms with the end of Newcastle's trophy drought, Chris has formed a 'winners' support group'.

31 Mar 2025 | Party time! Bus tour and Town Moor celebrations | 01:05:28
From the sublime to the ludicrous, Newcastle showed the footballing world how to celebrate properly on Saturday as the Carabao Cup winners showed off their spoils on a bus tour of the city centre.
A host of TV stars and football heroes joined the fun as the party carried on at the Town Moor with Eddie Howe in raptures (yes, really) and Bruno leading the chorus.
The Lasses are out of their title race, sadly, but the boys can still achieve a Champions League spot with a top five finish in the Premier League. Powered by the global Geordie family, anything is possible.

08 Apr 2025 | Bees and Foxes dispatched: Cup final response pleases Howe | 00:49:59
Newcastle United took six Premier League points from their first two games after winning the Carabao Cup, albeit three of them were a little easier than the others.
Brentford came to St James's Park and put up a fight, equalising through Mbeumo before Tonali's not-a-worldie saved the victory in another "game-state" triumph.
Then to Leicester, the third leg of George's relegation odyssey, and a sorry state of affairs where Newcastle only needed second gear to win (despite Fabian Schar's best efforts). Champions League football looks likelier than not now and we don't fear anyone, least of all Manchester United.

14 Apr 2025 | Doing the Manchester United double: now that IS delicious! | 01:03:26
Eddie Howe's illness, while obviously a concern for everyone, did not disrupt Newcastle's focus on a Super Sunday. Newcastle's senior teams won 10-1 on aggregate as The Lasses put promotion disappointment behind them with six unanswered goals against Blackburn.
Manchester United, meanwhile, left St James's Park with their tails between their legs; our midfield trio bullying them into submission. Kevin Keegan wasn't there to see his Wor Flags tribute, but he must have savoured our first league double over the Red Devils in 94 years.
Two huge games this week for the boys with Crystal Palace calling on Wednesday night before a trip to Aston Villa; Champions League qualification is now less a hope than an expectation.

And while Villa away was a Saturday to forget, the podcast team seem to have a lot more trouble remembering the details from earlier in the week.

03 Jan 2024 | From Festive Misery to Derby Fever | 01:06:10
In our last podcast we celebrated the successes of 2023 with family and friends, but the Christmas spirit has thoroughly worn off, especially with zero points from three festive Premier League fixtures.
January brings new hope, then, or does it? The queue in the physio's office is still pretty lengthy, and FFP could put paid to any ideas about spending our way out of trouble.
The New Year's resolution for Eddie Howe's men is as simple as it gets, win the FA Cup third round tie at Sunderland, by any means necessary.

08 Jan 2024 | Derby Demolition, Halifax Hammered: If Carlsberg Made Weekends... | 01:02:20
If you had designed the perfect outcome, it would have looked a lot like this. In control from the off, no dangerous moments at the back, and one-nil up at half-time before sealing it with two goals from your premium striker.
Newcastle had it all their own way on the pitch, but what does it mean for the rest of the season, future derbies, and what about the celebrations? We get into that and all the rest of it with Taylor, George, and Chris.
Let's not forget Sunday, either. Katie Barker notched a hat-trick in a magnificent 7-0 win over Halifax and Newcastle's women have their own date with FA Cup destiny next weekend in Manchester.

15 Jan 2024 | Manchester Misery: So close... yet so far away! | 00:59:40
Taylor Payne is joined by George Caulkin and Chris Waugh for a Manchester-holics anonymous meeting after our leading men and women were downed by the blue and red halves of the city respectively.
For Eddie Howe's men, it signalled a return to something like the Newcastle United of last season. Unfortunately, it wasn't so much a Pep talk as the strength of the champions' bench that told in the end.
Meanwhile, Becky Langley's NUFC Women lost their absurd unbeaten record against one of the strongest teams in the game. Players and fans did themselves proud, though, and there's a huge league game coming up to start afresh.

22 Jan 2024 | Trippier, Wilson, Almiron, and... Almiron!?! Transfer Storm (in a teacup?), & Lasses felled by Forest's second wind | 00:48:34
George Caulkin was absent on Monday, but rumours of his departure from Pod on the Tyne are WAY wide of the mark... or are they?! After all, football is a lie and you never know who to believe, especially in January.
Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson were both strongly linked with moves away from Newcastle in the last few days and, as we recorded, there was another story, this time connecting Miguel Almiron with a move to Saudi Arabia. Also, Miguel Almiron is reportedly on the move to Saudi Arabia.
Newcastle's women were looking for three points at home on Sunday, with an added bonus of potentially putting opponents Nottingham Forest out of the title race. Sadly, with Storm Isha raging through Kingston Park, and Albatross George in tow, it was heartbreak for the hosts and a three-team title race is a real possiblity.

29 Jan 2024 | Yes, it exists... Newcastle reach FA Cup Fifth Round! | 00:50:24
Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and George Caulkin (well, two of them) are in a very chipper mood despite some inclement weather, because Newcastle United won at Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round, something that simply hasn't happened at this football club in a very long time.
It was a great atmosphere at Craven Cottage on Saturday night, Alan Shearer in attendance, of course, and it was just the tonic with transfer window stress and a trip to Aston Villa on the horizon.
Meanwhile, the lasses booked their place in the FAWNL Cup semi-finals. With Forest beating Burnley in the league, their destiny is at their own feet once again and they'll be looking to build on their win at Fylde when they face Wolves this Sunday.

11 Jan 2024 | No Taste for Accounting: Financial results and Double Manchester Weekend Preview | 00:42:11
Jacob Whitehead returns to the podcast, albeit slightly later than scheduled, which makes it an awesome foursome as we look ahead to a HUGE weekend of football. Before that, though, Chris summarises the headlines from Newcastle United's latest financial results and the consequences for the ongoing January transfer window and beyond.
A double date with destiny, then, and we're looking to the stars for some optimism as Eddie Howe's men aim to take all three points in a fixture that usually yields none; the stats prove Manchester City are our toughest Premier League opponents, but we live in hope.
Meanwhile, it feels like the women's team have real hope of progress in the Adobe FA Cup, and that's despite facing one of the real big guns. Manchester United finished second in the WSL last season but Katie Barker is confident and now, we are as well.

In no particular order: should Eddie Howe be adapting our style of play more drastically, who is going to help the midfield while we're without so many players, WHEN WILL THOSE PLAYERS RETURN(!), and are we really at the absolute limits of what we can spend on transfers?
...and, after George's late withdrawal, the mantle of getting on Chris's nerves is taken up by Jacob, Taylor, and most of the people sending in questions.

13 Feb 2023 | Bobby '90: Episode 2, "I Don't Think There's Been a Manager in the Game Like Me" | 00:32:56
This is Bobby 90, a four-part special podcast series from The Athletic to mark what would have been Sir Bobby Robson's 90th birthday. In the second episode of the series, Sir Bobby takes us through his various managerial stints at England, Barcelona and his hunger for success everywhere he went.
As preparation for his final book, Sir Bobby looked back over his remarkable life-story with George Caulkin. Thanks to the generosity of Sir Bobby's family we are able to publish the recording of those conversations, featuring memories of his life as a miner's son, watching some of the greatest ever Newcastle United teams, and embarking on an incredible football career of his own.
We also hear the moving story of Sir Bobby's repeated bouts of cancer and how he came to launch his "last and greatest team", the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
The shows were written by Sir Bobby Robson and George Caulkin, mixed and edited by Ollie Bellwood.

The storm has subsided somewhat, but there are still transfer rumours swirling around three or four senior Newcastle players. Will anyone truly test Newcastle's resolve and, with injuries still rife, can we risk a sale to 'unlock' potential reinforcements.
The club have agreed a deal for a box-to-box midfielder in the shape of Manchester CIty's Alfie Harrison. However, is a prodigious 18 year-old intended to be used in the Premier League this season?
And, with the women facing Fylde in the FAWNL cup, Eddie Howe's men head to Craven Cottage on Saturday for an FA Cup tie against a good Fulham team who gave Liverpool a bit of a Carabao scare on Wednesday night.

01 Feb 2024 | Broken: Villa's Spell, George's Spirit | 00:57:14
Twelve hours in a car with Luke Edwards at the end of the longest January transfer desert in living memory has put George over the top. That's bad news for all concerned, especially Chris.
Taylor tries to hold it together but with very little support, not even from Jacob, it's a case of chaos winning... much like Tuesday night at Villa Park. Have Fabian Schar and the rest of Eddie Howe's corner-turning Mags set up a season-redeeming run with this magnificent victory?

Eddie Howe's men travel to Nottingham on Saturday, grateful for the FA Cup replay that took Forest to extra time and penalties on Wednesday night, as well as the absence of the Boxing Day Ballon d'Or, Chris Wood. It's going to be a VERY special away game, for one important reason; listen on to find out.

George attended the Wolverhampton match in Chris's absence and, despite good numbers in the away end, the atmosphere was flat. That was, of course, largely because of the shambolic showing on the pitch.
Perhaps a nice bit of needle with some opposition fans is what we need to liven things up. George has been writing about enmity in football this week and we think about what it will be like to hate people from other clubs again.

Tottenham were the visitors at St James' Park for the first match under the new ownership and, for a brief moment after Callum Wilson's early goal, it seemed the overwhelming wave of emotion might carry the team to victory.
Unfortunately, football reality took hold and, with a significant interruption caused by a medical emergency in the stands, a sense of deflation took hold. There are many decisions for the new owners, not least the fate of manager Steve Bruce.

After Steve Bruce's drawn-out depature, interim manager Graeme Jones took charge of the first team at Selhurst Park. The consensus is it was a good point, if a slightly fortunate one, but it may not be enough with a string of tough games between now and Christmas.
When January does arrive the club will be able to recruit, but are we already behind schedule with transfer plans? It's still early days, but the new ownership structure seems to be slow making decisions, big or small. And there was another sign of indecision with the club's communications about supporters imitating arab dress.

Elsewhere in the club, appointments have yet to be confirmed, not least the position of Sporting Director (or similar). We've an update on that and a review of the Brighton game which, while far from pretty, did see us win at least a point (well, exactly a point).

25 Feb 2024 | Cup Final Joy for Lasses after Miserable Night at Arsenal | 00:46:33
Taylor, George, and Chris are all a little discombobulated recording on a Sunday night (!) after a strange, terrible, lovely weekend.
On Saturday night Eddie Howe's men put in one of, if not the, worst performance since he became manager. All of which left us asking various questions, like: is Sven Botman struggling with his knee, where has the 'nasty' Newcastle gone, and was there even a bus?
However, as we record on Sunday evening, there's a warm glow taking over because Langley's lasses, aka Newcastle Women, have reached the FAWNL Cup Final having beaten Portsmouth 2-1 in front of 22 thousand people at St James's Park.

23 Nov 2021 | Two Birds, Dropping Like Stones? | 00:55:55
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with club correspondent Chris Waugh and special guest, Norwich reporter Michael Bailey.
Eddie Howe was forced to work from home on his first match-day as Newcastle manager; an exciting match saw his side come from behind twice to take a point against Brentford. It was encouraging, but was the result good enough?
The Magpies are now the only winless side in the Premier League after Norwich City won for the first time, and then repeated the trick, swapping managers in between. Michael Bailey joins us to talk about the relegation picture as we prepare to welcome the Canaries to St James's Park.

02 Dec 2021 | Stormy with a (Strong) Chance of Relegation | 00:53:19
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with club correspondent Chris Waugh and Senior Writer George Caulkin.
Two games have passed since our last podcast, and unfortunately the club remains winless in the Premier League. We've a special report on the dramatic draw with Norwich at St James's Park which saw Newcastle play with ten men for most of the game.
With nothing going right on the pitch, we're keeping our spirits up by sticking two fingers up to all the Newcastle haters and executives who talk a lot but say nothing.

04 Mar 2024 | Howe's tactical 'tweak' serves up his 100th PL win v Wolves | 00:40:40
What's this... a home win!? Eddie Howe's men found their SJP mojo on Saturday, inspired by the returning Joe Willock and the evergreen trio of Schar, Bruno, and Gordon... and with Isak back on the scoresheet, things are really looking up.
Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and Jacob Whitehead are your trio of brothers-in-arms this Monday revelling in three points, three goals, and a bench overflowing with attacking talent (alright, but you get the idea).
The Lasses (TM) were three up inside fifteen minutes at Stoke; another great result as they hunt down the FAWNL Premier North title. However, if you're trying to work out the points target, be warned; it's not straightforward.

Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with Senior Writer, and LIVING legend, George Caulkin.
As the Sports Direct signs were ripped out of St James's Park, we look back at a Newcastle win, yes you read that correctly, which has put to bed much of the doom and gloom lingering from the previous ownership.
We head to the Walkers Stadium next Sunday, and we managed to grab a few minutes with The Athletic's club correspondent Rob Tanner just before he jetted out to Italy for the Foxes' European tie in Naples.

14 Dec 2021 | True Hope is Swift: No Defence at King Power | 00:52:41
Taylor Payne channels Mark Lawrenson and Sean Connery this week on your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with club correspondent Chris Waugh and Senior Writer George Caulkin.
The team were full of regret this week after a thrashing at Leicester reminded them of the first rule of Newcastle Club, never be confident. Not that that will be a problem this week; back-to-back games against Liverpool and Manchester City are a daunting prospect.
The January transfer window opens in just two weeks, but it's difficult to bring players in at the start of that month and, anyway, who wants to come to Newcastle right now?

Taylor Payne hosts your snow-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with club correspondent Chris Waugh and Senior Writer George Caulkin.
We've decamped to the Forth for our Christmas special, so there's gift-giving, crackers, and reflections on an entirely miserable 2021 with one remarkable highlight.
There's a bit of admin as well, we review the recent backroom appointments at the club and look back over a week of football when some more controversial refereeing decisions were rendered entirely moot by Newcastle's hapless defence.

07 Mar 2024 | How Now (to Replace Dan Ashworth) | 00:48:52
Newcastle's outgoing Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has left a hole at the centre of his metaphorical wheel. Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and George Caulkin mangle ananalogies aplenty as they try to shed some light on the current state of affairs in the executive lounge.
No association football for us until Sunday, when The LassesTM head to Stourbridge. The formbook says three points for the Mags in that one but it's not so clear for Stamford Bridge on Monday night. The fortunes of two fullbacks, both Chelsea Academy products, come into focus ahead of that game.

12 Mar 2024 | Failing to capitalise again: familiar frailties at Chelsea | 00:42:06
Eddie Howe's Newcastle threw away any positive momentum they had built with the wins against Blackburn and Wolves with an abject defensive performance at Chelsea.
Chris Waugh was at Stamford Bridge covering Newcastle for The Athletic and he recounts tales of embarrassment and woe, on and off the pitch, to Taylor Payne and George Caulkin.
A daunting trip to Manchester CIty next for Howe and the boys, which we'll preview on Friday, but the lasses keep on winning (in the Midlands)

Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast with the help of The Athletic's Chris Waugh and George Caulkin.
The lads look back at the draw with Wolves. On paper, not the end of the World, especially with other results going the club's way, but losing both Almiron and Saint-Maximin until April is a real body blow.
And, we share a few fond memories of Glenn Roeder, a true adopted Geordie and a fine servant of the club as player, captain, and manager.

Steve Bruce's side, fresh from a tumultuous week, went to The Hawthorns and looked like they were happy to play for a point.
Circumstances are eerily similar to this week, five years ago, when Rafa Benitez became the shock new appointment as NUFC manager.

Chris is on holiday but regulars Taylor Payne and George Caulkin are joined on this special edition of The Athletic's "go-to Newcastle United podcast" by none other than Warren Barton.
Based in California, the former Toon lynchpin still works in the game as a coach and broadcaster. He has been keeping a keen eye on the goings on at St James' Park and hasn't been shy with his views on the current regime.
Warren's enduring connection to the club is so strong, in fact, that when the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust launched their 1892 Pledge scheme, he was the former player they asked to provide a steadying hand as one of the guardians of the fun (alongside. Listen in for the full story.
