09 Aug 2021 | 004: Benefits of Play - How Play can help your kids grow into the person God created them to be | 00:16:00
Episode Summary:
In this episode we look at play and the important role it plays in a child’s development.
The Areas of Development:
cognitive (includes language)
social-emotional
physical
spiritual
Play builds synapses between neurons in the brain, When these connections are not made they are pruned making it more difficult to build later on.
If we can build our children’s brains’ connections in ways that glorify God and point them to him when they are young it will be much easier for them to continue on that path.

Luke 2:52

24 Mar 2022 | Ep 48: Ecclesiastes 3:11 Theology Thursday | Seasons in Parenting | Creating an Environment of Curiosity and Questions | 00:17:40
Episode Summary: This Theology Thursday we look at Ecclesiastes 3:11 and freeing ourselves from the expectation to be able to answer all of our kids' questions. God has created us with limited capacities to understand him and his plan. We can embrace that and instead create an environment of curiosity and questions while knowing we can trust God to have infinite wisdom and understanding. Your Turn to Play: Read 2 pages in the middle of a book your kids don’t know. Ask them to try and figure out the whole story. This is our understanding of eternity. Then read 2 pages from the middle of a book your kids know really well. This is God’s understanding. You can do it, mama! 14 Nov 2022 | Helping Your Kids Understand a Friendship with Jesus | Interview with Children's Book Author Abbey Feldkamp | Ep 115 | 00:23:06
Recently released faith-based board book Wonderful, Marvelous, Magnificent You written by Abbey Feldkamp. Wonderful, Marvelous, Magnificent You offers young children an engaging and colorful tool for teaching them about Jesus in a relatable way. It was crafted as a rhyming story with vivid imaginative and playful scenes to captivate the reader’s attention. It's an offset lithography printed book with durable, hard pages. The illustrations and text are all hand drawn. From the Author: Through the pandemic I saw my own children suffer, and I saw other children suffer. I saw their lights diminish and their faith in themselves grow dim. They struggled in school, they struggled finding confidence, and they struggled having success in social interactions because they were shut away from the world for so long. Their confidence was starved and they became uneasy, anxious and uncertain. I knew I needed to bring them a story about just how amazing and resilient they can be--a beautiful, feel-good rhyming story about how wonderful, marvelous and magnificent kids truly are! This is how the story began. This book beautifully illustrates just how special God made children of every culture and ability. It is diverse, inclusive, and wholesome. This resource is a perfect companion to your daily children’s bible—the reader will see themselves reflected in the story with Jesus. It also encourages the reader to use their imagination and understand Jesus in a modern way. Perfect for gifting and reading at home, this will become an heirloom storybook to enjoy, handed down from generation to generation. Abbey Feldkamp was born and raised in Minnesota. Along with being a children’s author, she is a flower farmer specializing in English roses. When she’s not writing, she’s chasing her kids on the farm, tending her blooms, and caring for her honeybees. She’s married to her high school sweetheart and they have three children. Abbey believes reading is an essential life skill for children, and igniting a passion for that is her goal. 21 Aug 2024 | Are you teaching facts or faith? | 00:08:59
In this episode of Playfully Faithful Parenting, we dive into the important distinction between teaching kids Biblical facts and nurturing their faith. Through my experience as a mother, children's minister, and seminary graduate, I explore how simple questions, like the number of loaves and fishes, might build knowledge but not necessarily foster a deep, personal relationship with God. I share insights from language learning and ministry to illustrate how we can move beyond memorization to encourage our children to truly engage with and wonder about Bible stories. Join me as I discuss how to inspire your kids to grow in their faith through curiosity and relationships, and make faith a playful, heartfelt journey. You’ve got the Holy Spirit! You can do it, mama! 17 Jul 2023 | Loose Parts Play and Faith | Nurturing Creativity, Wonder, and Potential in Our Children | Ep. 156 | 00:23:20
On this episode of Playfully Faithful Parenting, we explore the concept of loose parts play and its intersection with faith. Joy highlights how loose parts can help children learn to take risks in a safe and creative environment. We delve into the benefits of loose parts beyond just creativity, discussing how they can foster problem-solving skills and enhance concentration. The importance of combining Bible stories with loose parts play is emphasized, as it can spark imagination and storytelling. We also draw parallels between the skills showcased in artistic crafts, such as engraving and designing, and the potential for children to tap into their own creative abilities. Throughout the episode, we are reminded of the limitless potential and opportunities for play that loose parts offer, and how they can enhance children's physical, cognitive, spiritual, and social/emotional growth. Join us as we explore the joyful and faith-filled world of loose parts play. You’ve got the Holy Spirit! You can do it, mama! 16 Aug 2021 | What is Play? Taking a theoretical and theological look at play. | 00:19:38
Episode Summary: Let’s talk about what play really is. We will look at it both from a scholarly and a Biblical POV. United Nation’s Committee on the Rights of the Child’s definition: “‘Play’: Children’s play is any behaviour, activity or process initiated, controlled and structured by children themselves; it takes place whenever and wherever opportunities arise. Caregivers may contribute to the creation of environments in which play takes place, but play itself is non-compulsory, driven by intrinsic motivation and undertaken for its own sake, rather than as a means to an end. Play involves the exercise of autonomy, physical, mental or emotional activity, and has the potential to take infinite forms, either in groups or alone. These forms will change and be adapted throughout the course of childhood. The key characteristics of play are fun, uncertainty, challenge, flexibility and non-productivity. Together, these factors contribute to the enjoyment it produces and the consequent incentive to continue to play. While play is often considered non-essential, the Committee reaffirms that it is a fundamental and vital dimension of the pleasure of childhood, as well as an essential component of physical, social, cognitive, emotional and spiritual development.” (As defined in UN’s General Comment #17 on article 31) Biblically play is seen in times of peace, restoration, and celebration. It is also deeply connected to Sabbath which demonstrates trusting God to remain in control as you take time to glorify him through enjoying the life he has given you. We also look at the concepts of free-play & guided-play. Verses from the episode: 2 Samuel 6:14 Isaiah 11 Zechariah 8:5 Links from the episode: Dr. Stuart Brown’s 7 Characteristics of Play University of Cambridge’s Research Center Play in Education, Development, and Learning (PEDAL) Playfully Faithful Parenting Podcast is a ministry of CreatedtoPlay.com. 18 Oct 2021 | Ep 014: Should We Celebrate Halloween? | 00:17:45
Episode Summary: This episode is really just some of the thoughts that have been on my heart over the last few weeks about Halloween. I encourage you to follow your convictions, but as Tara Leigh-Cobble of The Bible Recap says, “don’t shout where the Bible whispers and don’t whisper where the Bible shouts.” Halloween and Trick or treating are not in the Bible. If your family’s version of Halloween involves costumes and candy, I think you should enjoy it and use it as an opportunity to shine the light of Jesus. If you feel convicted otherwise, follow God’s leading, but be open-minded and non-judgemental of families who do not share the same conviction. God is in control as much on October 31 as he is any other day of the year! Love ya, mamas! Keep playing! 23 May 2022 | Ep 65: Chatting and Catching | Teaching Meaningful Prayer to Kids | Listening to God for Children | Parenting for Faith's 5 Key Tools Part 3 | 00:21:04
Episode Summary: This is the third in a 4-part episode on Parenting for Faith’s 5 Key Tools. This week we look at Chatting and Catching. This is basically prayer, but by not calling it prayer we can help kids get to the heart of it, instead of what they think prayer is supposed to be or what they are supposed to do. Parenting for Faith also has some really beautiful and practical ways to teach kids to hear from God. Your Turn to Play: Practice having your kids chat with God, by offering topics that they then silently tell God or whisper in a pillow. Verses from the episode:

03 Apr 2023 | Helping this generation know God | Learning from Judges 2 | Why do kids fall away from God? | Ep. 141 | 00:16:25
As parents, we have the incredible responsibility of teaching our children about God. It's one of the most important things we can do for them. But it's not always easy. We may not know where to start or how to make it interesting for our kids. In this episode, we'll discuss the importance of teaching your kids who God is and what He has done. We'll look at the story of Judges 2 to see how God's people forgot Him and suffered the consequences. And, we will reflect on our own lives to remember stories of what God has done for us so we can share it with our children. Love: Reflect on what God has done for you: today, this past week, the last month, last year, and each decade. Teach: Teach your kids stories and how to recognize God in their own stories. Play: Have fun with telling God stories. Turn your hallway into a God history museum exhibit. You’ve got the Holy Spirit! You can do it, mama! 15 May 2023 | Playing in the Connected Families Framework | Modeling God in Discipline | ep 147 | 00:24:27
I fully believe that God wants you to enjoy being a mom. It is a gift and a blessing. When we do it with Him, instead of for Him, we are able to model God’s love for our children while experiencing joy in our motherhood. Then, our children will be able to know that Jesus didn’t just die for them to have eternal life in heaven, but abundant life here and now with Him. In this episode, we look at the 4 messages of the Connected Families Framework and how we can use play to help our children experience and know:
