Ep.122 Turning pest fish into fertiliser - Ron Kaponica (Sponsored by Charlie Carp)
00:26:25
Australian estuaries have a problem. Well, they have several, but one of the major threats to the ecosystem is undoubtedly the European carp which outcompete our native fauna, overgraze on flora and cause further destruction.
This episode's sponsor is Charlie Carp, a fish fertiliser company that's helping to keep populations down, even though my guest Ron Kaponica points out we'll never be able to get rid of them permanently (much like rabbits).
In this episode, you'll learn about the problem of pest carp in Australia, and how Charlie Carp decimate populations and turn them into a good, old-fashioned organic fertiliser, as well as a non-organic option for those of us that want to super-charge our veggies or ornamental plants.

Ep.128 Restoration, rejuvenation & renewal pruning - Charles King Sadler (King Garden)
01:02:34
Have you ever wondered how to prune a plant that seems "too far gone"? Maybe you wanted to make a hedge smaller, but all the foliage was on the outside and only woody stems can be found in the middle of the shrub, where you want to prune to. Or maybe you've got a caney plant with multiple leaders coming from a common base, and you're wondering how to cut it down a few sizes without turning it into a dome shape with the petrol hedger.
In this episode, Texas garden expert Charles King Sadler comes on the show to teach us how to prune for restoration, revenuation or renewal, and what the difference is between those three terms.

Do you think that we can talk about plants for very long without speaking about animals?
We can't, because they are entangled within the web of life together and so this episode is a reflection upon the importance of biodiversity. Particularly the importance of animals, and how the work we perform as horticulturists and natural resource managers is integral to the prevention of biodiversity collapse.

There are several examples of cultivated plants that have escaped into the wild and continue to cause significant ecological damage in Australia. In this episode, Aimee Freimanis from Gardening Responsibly tells us how plants sold at our local nurseries can often be poor choices due to their weed potentiality, depending on the cultivar and location, of course.
Gardening Responsibly is a grant-funded initiative that educates growers and consumers on how to make better plant choices, using effective plant labelling and a web application for you to search for individual plant weed potentiality.

Ep.139 Growing abundant leafy greens - Michael Homan (Sponsored by Charlie Carp)
00:28:49
I love growing leafy greens. You get a yield faster than root and fruit crops, they don't require as much sunlight as other crops, and best of all you can use them in a variety of dishes, from salads to broths.
In this episode, Instagram gardener Michael Homan comes on the show to teach us his tricks of the trade to grow abundant leafy green veg easily, whether you're growing from seed or you're buying seedlings at your local nursery.
One of those tricks is to get your fertilising right. We recommend using Charlie Carp fish emulsion fertiliser on the leaves, and their organic pellets in the soil, which will give a full-spectrum, nitrogen-rich feed that will have your plants exploding with growth.

Ep.161 Air purifying indoor plants: New scientific study! - Dr Fraser Torpy (University of Technology Sydney) & Johan Hodgson (sponsored by Ambius)
00:37:00
How much truth is there to the claims of the ability for plants to purify the air? Is it just hype, or do they make a genuine difference?
Recently, one of the world's leading indoor plant companies, Ambius, sponsored me to visit their press release for a new study that they funded at the University of Technology in Sydney (UTS) regarding the ability for plants to purify the air and suffice to say... what they've found is astounding.
Not only does this study confirm the air purifying indoor plant claims, but they've completely revolutionised the way that we should be approaching indoor air quality as a society. You won't be using artificial air purifiers after listening to this episode!
Johan Hodgson is a plantsman and General Manager at Ambius, and Dr Fraser Torpy is an Associate Professor involved with the study at UTS. Together, they were able to explain exactly what's so exciting about their findings, and how business owners and professionals in the horticulture industry can use their findings to help green indoor spaces around the country, and the globe.

Ep.163 Native logging sustainability: To ban or not to ban? - Paul Reid (The Aussie Logger)
00:51:44
Victoria is set to ban logging in native forests for timber. Sounds great, right? But let's dig a little bit deeper and see if we've missed something here.
Paul Reid educates people on social media about what it's really like in Aussie forestry as The Aussie Logger. He works in a forestry plantation setting, but he feels strongly that we have a responsibility to conduct native logging in Victoria for a number of reasons, including the quality of our timber and the quality of our environmental practices when compared with countries we're likely to source timber from if we can't produce it locally.
Prepare to have your beliefs challenged, and keep an open mind when you listen to this episode

Ep.166 Natural resource management: Creating ecosystems that last - Sam Dalton (sponsored by Arboreen)
00:52:35
We all agree that natural resources need our help. But how do we create ecosystems that last, using native plants, within budget, and on-time?
To celebrate National Tree Day in Australia, our sponsors at Arborgreen have helped to create an information-packed episode. We'll take you through all of the major steps you'll need to follow when creating and improving natural habitats to support our natural resources, which starts with preparing sites, planting trees, and then ongoing management.
Sam Dalton is a seasoned expert in the Natural Resource Management (NRM) field, and he's also a product analyst at Arborgreen. He's one of the people that help the company stay focused on offering solutions that actually work, rather than simply seeming like a good idea at the time. He's got the knowledge we need to learn, so we're lucky to be able to pick his brain.
Make sure to share this episode with somebody else who needs to learn about NRM, and check out previous episodes I've created in collaboration with Arborgreen:

How do the best NRM experts deal with invasive and environmental weeds, without reaching for chemical herbicides as a first resort?
By using Integrated Weed Management (IWM) strategies, of course. These include physical, cultural, biological, genetic, regulatory and finally chemical tools as a last resort.
Kate Blood is Program Manager for weed management at the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action (DEECA, formerly DELWP). She's the perfect person to explain how to actually get rid of weeds, rather than simply spending your whole budget on making a great initial result that will become undone within 12 months.
Because, let's face it, sometimes weeds need more than a single effort to be removed. Once they've become established, they can take multiple approaches and years of effort. And years... and years... and years...
