10 Sep 202466 | How To Spot Sneaky Animal-Based Ingredients Hidden in ‘Plant-Based’ Food Products – Meats & Fish {Smart Shopping, Label Reading, Grocery Tips, Plant Based, Health, Plantbased Diet, Nutrition}00:11:56

Walk into any grocery store, and it’s natural to assume that most of the products being sold on shelves around us would be free from animal-based ingredients – such as cookies, soups, canned beans, noodles and breads. These are not in the refrigerated meats section and don’t seem to be made with fish, beef, pork, or poultry, so they’re obviously vegan or 100% plant-based, right?

Wrong. Manufacturers can turn animal-based fats and proteins into many forms, so many commercially processed food products can contain animal-derived ingredients. And it’s often without us realizing it, UNLESS we know where and what to look for.

That’s why I wanted to do this episode. I’ll give you top tips that’ll help you spot meat and fish-based ingredients used in commercial food products more quickly. You’ll then be able to make smarter shopping decisions and move with more confidence towards a plant-powered lifestyle. Are you ready to do this? Then let’s jump in!

08 Oct 202471 | How To Spot Sneaky Animal-Based Ingredients Hidden in ‘Plant-Based’ Food Products – Milk & Dairy {Smart Shopping, Label Reading, Grocery Tips, Plant Based, Health, Plantbased Diet, Nutrition}00:12:24

Even if you don’t have a cow’s milk food allergy, it’s hard to miss the fact that many commercially processed food products sold contain cow’s milk-based ingredients in them. That’s because dairy is commonly used by manufacturers to make many of their food products more appealing and taste better. Just think of butter cookies, milk chocolate bars, mac and cheese box kits, hot chocolate drink mixes, and goldfish crackers. Sometimes it seems like milk is used in nearly everything!

But when you’re trying to move into a full plant-based diet lifestyle or a vegan diet, navigating the commercial foods landscape can get tricky. That’s why I want to help. In this episode, I’ll show you how to easily spot common dairy-based ingredient terms on product packages with real-life examples. Let’s save you precious time and energy when grocery shopping, so you can move smoother and faster into a plant-powered lifestyle. Ready? Let’s dive in!

Have you seen or had acorn squash before? These squashes look like huge acorns with their round plump globular shapes and even grooved ridges. They are often sold in bins at the grocery store with a dark green appearance, though they may appear in other colors, such as orange and white! If you’re new to the plant-based world, chances are you may not have had a chance yet to cook with this less known squash in your kitchen, or know much about it. It may even be one of those squashes that you have pushed your shopping cart by at the store and never even considered buying.

That’s why I want to spotlight acorn squash in today’s episode. They are a hidden gem in the squash world and many people don’t know just how nutritious they are…much less how to eat them. So, if you’re curious to find out more about this fall plant-based ingredient, listen in!

Worried about getting weak bones and more fractures if you eat plant-based? After all, dairy products have long been promoted to be a good source of calcium. If you want to find out, tune in.  In this ‘Ask the Dietitian’ episode, we’ll look at the risks associated with taking calcium supplements, and whether calcium supplements are really needed if you eat plant-based for the long-term. Ready to dive into this topic with me? Let’s go!

Are you worried about your high cholesterol levels and being now at risk for a sudden heart attack or other heart problems? Or, maybe you’ve had one already and don’t know if there will be another one coming. Well, if you’re tired of taking all those heart meds and want a solution…without MORE meds or surgery, listen in to the interview I had with my guest, Paul C.

In this interview (Part 1), Paul shares the symptoms and experience he had of a heart attack at just 40 years of age, with another one only two years later. As a result, he had two stent placements and was also placed on multiple meds, including those for cholesterol, angina and blood pressure. Learn what led him to finally make the change to a plant-based diet lifestyle and some of the positive changes he started experiencing as a result, after just 4 months of starting a whole food plant-based diet!

Listening to his story is such a reminder to me of why early recognition of the warning signs of a heart attack is so important, and of having the right rapid diagnosis and subsequent treatment. It’s also a reminder that heart attacks can happen at any age, not just in later adult years. Listen in and be inspired by this episode!

25 Feb 202593 | Do You Need Iron Supplements When Eating Plant-Based?00:12:29

When you move from a meat-heavy diet to a plant-based one, there will obviously be a shift in the kinds of foods you are eating. And since meats and other animal-based protein products are a source of iron, it’s natural to be worried about how you’ll get the iron you need, if you take these foods out of your diet. So, will you seriously lack iron and get anemic once you start eating plant-based? And to prevent that happening, do you need to rely on iron supplements?

Let’s discuss that today. In this episode, we’ll look at whether eating plant-based would be adequate to maintain good iron levels, or if iron supplements should be a critical part of a plant-based diet, and if you need to start taking them right away. Ready to dive into this with me? Let’s go!

Note:  Before taking any iron supplements, it is recommended to have your iron levels tested first, to check what your iron levels are, and to rule out a condition called hemochromatosis. In hemochromatosis, the body has an issue with iron overload, and absorbs too much iron from food.

It’s clear the odds aren’t stacked in her favor.

Lyana knew things need to change, but how? That’s when she began a whole food, no-oil, plant-based diet, and her health changed dramatically within the next few months. Listen in to Part 1 of my interview with Lyana and be inspired by her fascinating story!

04 Mar 202594 | How to Best Buy & Store Avocados – Use These 3 Grocery Pro-Tips!00:13:05

Have a love-hate relationship with avocados? If so, I don’t blame you – I do too. Some days, I’m delighted to cut open an avocado and see a smooth blemish-free interior to enjoy. On other days, I’m utterly disappointed when I cut open one and find a blemished brown and ugly interior, and have to toss it away in disgust. Such a waste of money!

But with rising food and gas prices, it’s now even more important to know how to stretch our food dollars and make what we buy last longer. And I’ve discovered ways now to minimize those ‘not-so-good’ avocado days.

So, let’s talk avocados. In this episode, I’ll show you how to wisely pick avocados from the store, then how to best store them at home. This way, you can enjoy them more, with less stress and worry about having to use them up fast before they spoil. If you’ve never tried an avocado before, make sure to listen in too, so you can learn from the get-go how to best buy and store them, and save money and needless frustration in your plant-based diet transition!

But Chrystal had also been used to a Standard American Diet (or SAD) with a meat-heavy diet rich in junk foods, restaurant meals and lots of fried dishes. So why and how did Chrystal change her diet and lifestyle and what was the result? Listen in to this first part of my interview with Chrystal and be prepared to walk away inspired and encouraged in your own health journey. 01 Oct 202470 | Do All Vegans or Plant-Based Eaters Have Low Iron Levels? {Plant Based Diet, Nutrition, Iron, Health, Whole Foods, Plantbased Eating, Anemia, Iron Deficiency, Key Nutrients}00:18:17

There’s a common concern I see among those wanting to start a plant-based diet lifestyle. And it’s this. It’s a fear that eating this way will cause them to seriously lack key nutrients, because they’re taking out meats, dairy, eggs and other animal-based foods from their meals. Do you have this fear too?

If so, iron might be one of those nutrients you are especially worried about when making this big lifestyle shift. Since meats are a source of iron, it’s natural then to be wondering, “Will eating plant-based make me end up with nutrient deficiencies and get health problems like iron deficiency anemia?”

Let’s talk about it. In this episode, we’ll look at the importance of iron for our bodies, how common iron deficiency anemia really is, and what the recent research is showing. That way, we can better answer this question. I’ll meet you on the inside!

In fact, she dropped 4 pant sizes during this period of time. Her husband and family had positive health changes too, and it positively impacted their eating choices. 18 Jun 202454 | Why a Calorie is NOT a Calorie for Weight Loss - Especially on a Plant-Based Diet {Plant Based, Lose Weight, Plantbased, Drop Pounds, Whole Foods, Get in Shape, Weight Loss, Goals, Resolutions}00:11:34

Have you ever heard of the saying that ‘a calorie IS a calorie’ and believed it? Perhaps you’ve tried very calorie-restricted diets in the past for this very reason. You know, the ones that have you count every single calorie eaten during the day and limit you to tiny portion sizes of certain foods. Sure, it works for a season, by reducing your total daily caloric intake, but constant macros and calorie counting becomes exhausting to keep up long-term.

So, is it ALL about the calories, and should we just assume that all calories are equal? Not quite. There’s definitely more to this story and I want to tell you about it. In this episode, I’ll give you 3 reasons why we can’t treat calories from different foods all the same. Curious to find out more? Then tune in. I’ll meet you on the inside!

Can you eat fruit with diabetes? Fruit is often seen to contain lots of sugar and carbs, so many people are afraid to eat them.
