Celebrating the First Anniversary of Places I Remember with Lea Lane calls for something special, and so the tables are turned as Lea's sons, Randall Lane and Cary Lane, interview her.

Travel writer/musician authors Josephine Matyas and Craig Jones share stories and experiences from their book about music, travel and the black experience in the heart of the South.
Major Delta destinations include Clarksdale, Tunica, Greenville, Dockery Farm, Greenwood and Tupelo, in Mississippi; and Memphis, Tennessee. Museums, homesteads, gravesites, juke joints, frolicking houses, Beale Street, Graceland and Sun and Stax recording studios are just some of the sites discussed in relation to the blues and the music it influenced. After a life of international travel; work including opera performer, chef and arts director; raising a family; divorcing and recovering from alcoholism, Sandra Smith was a ready for a sea change. Literally.
At 43, Sandra moved from Philadelphia to the California coast, bought a 35-foot sailboat, painted it pink, and taught herself to sail. Her travel adventures for the next seven years took her down the coast to Mexico and into the Pacific.
Navigating by the ancient mariners' system of dead-reckoning, she experienced storms, evaded drug dealers and pirates as she sailed over 4,000 miles alone and sometimes with her rebellious teenage daughter. Using just a compass, a chart and a prayer, the author embarks on this spiritual odyssey which brings self-discovery and healing.
Later Sandra enjoyed adventures in Guatemala, and winds up in Arizona, living a land-locked, but still fascinating life.

Scotland: Highlands, Lowlands, Islands -- And In-Between
Bruce McAlpine and his sister Rhona Paterson grew up near Edinburgh. They share their love of Scotland with Lea, and they cover cities, countryside, islands and all things Scottish.
After describing Scotland geographically, we start by talking of the Scottish character, and go on to the delights of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scottish foods, Scotch whiskey, the Highlands (is there really a Loch Ness monster?). Also the 800 or so Scottish islands, focusing on The Isle of Skye.
We also discuss Scottish pleasures such as golf, bagpipes, and festivals.
To end the episode, Rhona and Bruce share special memories of Scotland. And Lea shares two of her memories as well: one involving Queen Elizabeth and an unexpected meeting; and the other, dealing with the question of what a Scotsman wears under his kilt. The Netherlands: Way Beyond Windmills And Tulips -- Including The Floriade, Held Every 10 Years
On this episode you'll find out about dozens of surprising things to enjoy on a trip to The Netherlands (and why it's often called "Holland"). Renske Green-Lute is a self-described "Dutch fanatic" who lives near Amsterdam. She shares inside info all about this mostly flat little European country: a fun mix of historic past, delightful present, and sustainable future.
Lea and Renske talk about museums and Keukenhof Gardens, cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and all the classic sights and sites. But also, among many other things -- star-shaped fortresses, oyster gathering on mud flats, "Gouda by Candlelight, overnighting in an Airstream, a 15th century church in an Amsterdam canal house, gooey things to eat, Delta Works (which save the country from being underwater), a hilly Dutch city, and many more discoveries.

The Gorgeous Virgins: Dreamy American And British Caribbean Islands
The U.S.V.I and the B.V.I are beautiful Virgin Island "cousins"-- dozens of tropical isles and cays set between the Caribbean and Atlantic near Puerto Rico. Trains World-Wide: From Eurail To Luxury Journeys, Including The Venice Simplon Orient Express

Mountain Gorillas, Chimps, 'The Big Five': Awesome Animal Quests In Rwanda And Uganda
One of the world's greatest travel experiences is to visit the mountain gorillas of Central Africa. Lea just returned from this once-in-a-lifetime quest, including other animal safaris, and talks with Africa travel expert Chris Johnston about the how-tos, what-to -expects, and special memories of this aspirational adventure. _____ Chris Johnston of Steppes Travel in England, wrote this great bio: "I first visited Africa over 26 years ago and the trip took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, but stayed for two years. Since then, I have been very fortunate to have explored much of east, south, west and Central Africa. My heart however lies with the great apes and I have explored Rwanda, Uganda and both Congo’s many times over the years, to look for the wonderful primates found here. I’ve led groups for CNN, BBC wildlife film makers and Nat Geo photographers as well as countless adventurous travellers who are looking for what is surely the most human of all wildlife encounters. I have also worked closely with the Ugandan, Rwandese and Congolese governments to look at ways of providing sustainable gorilla trekking in new regions for tourism.
In that time I have been charged by a silverback, stepped on (and worse) by juvenile gorillas, been attacked by a chimpanzee, been shot at by poachers, almost fallen into a lava lake, enjoyed high tea with UN peacekeepers and arrested. I have however been won over by the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people who live here, often in the most challenging of circumstances. They remain among some of the most welcoming and optimistic people I have had the privilege to meet. Japan: Tips From A Traveler Who’s Been There 43 Times!
We asked Marian Goldberg, who has traveled to Japan-- yes, 43 times, to tell us about some of her favorite memories of that island-nation. As one of this country’s foremost Japanese experts, she focuses on special travel aspects of Japan, from the popular to the unusual, and from serene to exciting.
-- We learn about Shinto shrines, and the pleasures of visiting and staying in Buddhist retreats. There’s “forest bathing” which has nothing to do with water, and bathing in hot springs, which very much does. -- We delight in the beauty of gardens and cherry blossoms, light-up festivals and strolls through bamboo forests, and ancient cedar forests on a sub-tropical island off Japan’s southern coast. And also traveling to the shrines of the Shoguns.= -- Marian tells of astounding views of Mt. Fuji from a skywalk outside of Tokyo, which also offers zip lines, huge swings and rock climbing. -- We discuss tea ceremonies at a tea house with a geisha, in a town known for green tea. And we chat about one of the oldest pilgrimages in the world, passing by 88 temples set in valleys below towering mountains, and along the coast, where pilgrims can dress in traditional white robes, and walk up to two months to complete the route. -- Snow monkeys look like old men as they bathe in hot springs. And hiking trails between Kyoto and Tokyo are classic and popular. San Sebastian, Spain: 'Greatest Foodie City In The World'

Forbes Editor's Travels, Part #1: Liberia, Syria, Vietnam, Drag Racing In Nevada
Randall Lane likes to live on the edge: I know because, besides being chief content officer and editor of Forbes, he's my son. His motto is "life is to be experienced," and in both his work and play, he would rather do things than regret the things he didn't do. Here he gives us four exciting (sometimes harrowing) tales of his adventurous travels.

Miami: Past, Present, Future -- & The New Underline Park, With Founder Meg Daly
The Underline, a 10-mile linear park, urban trail and public arts destination, will meander from the Miami River to Dadeland South under the Miami Metrorail. With its first section, "Brickell Backyard" newly opened, Meg Daly, Founder and President of Friends of the Underline, talks with Lea about Miami's past, present and future.
-- Lea and Meg both grew up in the Miami area a generation apart. Lea remembers Miami Beach of the past 50 years: no air conditioning, the airport not much more than a hangar, mosquitos sprayed from above with DDT, and much more.
-- Meg tells of growing up in an activist family in the Miami suburb of Coral Gables, in a vintage Spanish-style house. Her family came from Boston in 1960 and was active in keeping the gorgeous Biltmore Hotel from being destroyed.
-- At the beginning of the Millennium, when Miami still did not have a cultural center, Meg's father, Parker Thompson, who would later help plan The Underline, was involved in developing the Arsht Performing Arts center. It influenced an arts scene including museums, Art Basel, Wynwood, and new neighborhoods designed by great architects, spawning great restaurants.
-- Along with progress came heavy traffic -- and that is where The Underline comes in, bringing us a 10-mile linear park by 2025, leading to a network of parks and trails with native plants, butterflies, places to connect --"it equals life!"
-- Meg talks about the first section completed, "Brickell Backyard," from the Miami River through Brickell Village.
-- And the four thousand new trees and green design will help Miami get through climate change.

Green Travel, 'Slow Travel': Eco-Tourism Trips, Tips

Alaska: Northern Lights, Fishing Towns, Glacial Bays, Denali, More
-- We start with cruising. Does size matter when it comes to seeing glaciers, up close? (Not that much, as in other things.) We name glaciers and describe some of the best excursions off the ship, including food tours, whale watching, flight seeing to a salmon bake, sports fishing, the Skagway train -- and dive bars, of course.
-- Fran loves snorkeling in the cold Alaska waters, among the "surprisingly colorful purple, orange and red starfish," and even an octopus. And she wants to try standup paddle boarding among the icebergs.
-- Midgi suggests you "get into the sky" to see Alaska, land on glaciers, dogsled, hike and flightsee. Lea tells of flying from Ketchikan to the Tongass National Park to see bears, and helicoptering to a glacier that had never been walked on before -- maybe.

Husband Bill and I invited my son Cary and his partner Zhanna on a travels through the major European World War battlefields, in Belgium and France, ending 10 days later in Paris -- a road trip of charm and history. First, we hear tips on road tripping, then we describe our trip. Right away we missed The Compiègne Wagon, the train carriage in which both the Armistices of both World Wars were signed. We also misdirected the GPS and wound up back at the airport! But we visited pretty Laon, and then drove up to Lille, “Capital des Flandre." -- Next day, to Ypres in western Belgium. At Ypres we attended the Last Post Ceremony, held every evening at the Menin Gate. -- In Bruges, fairy-tale city in northwest Belgium, we stayed for dinner when crowds thinned. Next day to Amiens, in France. Nearby, the Battle of the Somme in 1916, was one of the largest of World War I, among the bloodiest in history.
