In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Simon Jones of EVRYTHNG and Michael Dossor of Result Group about smart packaging and the opportunities it will create for Australian brand owners.

The discussion includes how smart packaging supports product transparency and authenticity along with the benefits of new technology and standards that are now converging to make inexpensive intelligent packaging economically feasible. We then look to the future to discuss the opportunities that smart packaging can make available using technologies that are now in common use today, transitioning to concepts that are just around the corner as prices for intelligent packaging decrease even further.

We also review how, in addition to the opportunities for customer engagement, smart packaging can also provide benefits that help prevent food wastage and help brand owners reach sustainability goals, particularly by improving consumer recycling of packaging.

11 Feb 2024Transforming Australia’s Plastic Recycling Eco-System with Prof Ed Kosior00:34:49

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News talks to Professor Edward Kosior, founder and CEO of Nextek, about what it will take to create a circular economy for plastics in Australia.

We assess the shortcomings in our current recycling capabilities, particularly in polypropylene, and how the Solving Plastic Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) will be working to bridge those gaps following its funding of $140m. The discussion explores what is required to transform Australia’s recycling eco-system and we review design considerations such as pigments in plastic that impact the recyclability of packaging for food grade applications.

We discuss the importance of academic research being industry-driven so that the industry’s biggest pain points lead the way, leading to the development of technology that is single-mindedly focused on real-world challenges. Kosior suggests looking at the success stories around the world and introducing the best of these into Australia.

We wrap up by discussing how the CRC can maximise the rate of recovery from the waste stream and review Prof Kosior’s proposed establishment of an advanced recycling sorting centre located in an industrial setting where business and academia can run trials in an industrial environment.

08 Jun 2021Increasing the use of fibre based packaging to help meet sustainability goals with Anne Uusitalo of Metsä Board and Brad Partington of Ball & Doggett00:40:12

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, Anne Uusitalo, Product Safety & Sustainability Director at Metsä Board and Brad Partington, General Manager for Packaging at Ball & Doggett, discuss the innovations allowing fibre based products to replace single use plastics.

We start the episode with Brad providing an overview of Ball & Doggett before Anne describes Metsä Board's operations and its relationship with Ball & Doggett. The discussion then moves onto the changes both groups have seen in their customers' views on sustainable packaging and the shift from short-term to long-term goals.

This leads on to the increase in global awareness of waste following China's ban on importing waste from other countries along with the importance of collaboration across all parties including authorities, producers and consumers. The APCO targets are acknowledged to be ambitious yet these, in turn, are increasing the drive towards more renewable based products, reducing landfill, increasing recycling and the establishment of new standards and regulations to support further drive developments.

Anne then discusses Metsä Board's operating environment, its extensive use of fibre products and the company's targets for zero carbon emissions in its operations. This leads to discussion of a recent project where Metsä Board successfully replaced plastic cherry tomato packaging with recyclable fibre product while retaining product quality and improving consumer engagement.

Brad also provides examples of recent transitions from single-use plastic to recyclable fibre-based materials in indoor signage and the replacement of polystyrene trays for meat & seafood packaging.

We wrap the episode by returning to the importance of continuing innovation and collaboration to ensure targets can be met and waste reduced while protecting the quality of the products in the packaging.

25 Aug 2024Resetting Australia’s packaging strategy towards 2030 and beyond00:35:03

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News talks to Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) about its 2030 strategy and an eco-modulation model.

Against the backdrop of a recent update from APCO which revealed the industry is not on track to reach the 2025 National Packaging Targets for most materials, Chris gives us an overview of the challenges the industry faces to get on track and outlines how APCO’s 2030 strategy will improve performance against the National Packaging Targets and deliver brand owners a social license for packaging.

In its 2030 strategy, APCO will be moving to eco-modulated fees for members. Chris talks about how this move will incentivise members to improve the sustainability of their packaging and bridge critical economic gaps across Australia’s packaging system and elaborates on how the funds will be directed to supporting end markets, building reprocessing infrastructure and strengthening collection networks. Chris also gives us an insight into how members were engaged throughout the process, how the new proposed eco-modulation fee model would be implemented, and the intricacies of working with government policies and contracts.

We also discuss the change from voluntary to mandatory involvement, the importance of being proactive with data and reporting, and an initiative to reduce the volume of landfill by 1m tonnes per year.

We wrap up by getting an overview of how APCO is planning to roll out this new strategy while considering the government's impending mandates.

06 Oct 2020Soft Plastics & Sustainability with Jacky Nordsvan, Head of Packaging, Nestle Australia00:19:01

PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Jacky Nordsvan, the head of packaging at Nestle Australia. Jacky oversees packaging for Oceania with a particular focus on packaging sustainability. She is involved with Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and sits on the technical advisory committee of the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP).

Our discussion with Jacky starts with Nestle's vision towards sustainable packaging by 2025 and its three pillar strategy it has established to support the implementation of its vision covering packaging, recycling infrastructure and consumer behaviour. It includes how the PREP tool is used to identify packaging items that cannot be recycled so that alternative solutions can be found. The scope of this effort is enormous as Nestle has approximately 2,000 SKUs, many of which have more than one type of recyclable material in their packaging.

Jacky outlines Nestle's recently launched kerbside trial with IQ Renew and the NSW Central Coast Council to capture soft plastics for recycling in a special bag that, when full, can be put inside the recycling bin for collection and subsequent processing. We also discuss Nestle's partnership with REDcycle's soft plastics recycling program.

Nestle's brands are preparing to champion recycling to consumers as part of Nestle's third pillar. Jacky explains how this will involve the extensive use of the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) and messaging on packaging to positively motivate consumers. Past examples of this effort includes KitKat Chocolatory introducing “Give the planet a break” on its e-commerce packaging in 2019, with other brands set to release major campaigns later this year and in early 2021.

To wrap up the episode, Jacky steps us through the various efforts currently underway to ensure Nestle can meet its goal of 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025.

15 Jun 2021On building a packaging business and a transparent leadership style, with Nina Nguyen, CEO of Pakko00:23:59

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Nina Nguyen, CEO of Pakko and winner of the 2021 Young Packaging Professional of the Year Award for the ANZ region, discuss the journey to establishing Pakko and developing an authentic leadership style when youth and gender could have been a disadvantage.

Nina tells us about her start with producing packaging for her parents' farm, learning the perils and pitfalls of importing and deciding to create her own business to ensure control of product supply. She admits there was a very steep learning curve when she purchased an existing company but passion for finding a solution enabled her to transition and grow the entity into today's Pakko.

The discussion moves on to Nina's dedication to client satisfaction, the importance of branded packaging, and educating customers on the unboxing experience. This has led to the development of Pakko's Interactive Design Platform, a first of its kind, game changing online tool that lets customers design their packaging solution online.

Nina discusses Pakko's sustainability goals and its recycling of material, sourcing FSC- and PEFC-approved materials from local partners, and the use of vegetable-based inks in printing. She also outlines Pakko's donation of off-cuts to a company that repurposes them as arts and crafts products.

The discussion then focuses on Nina's experiences as a young woman leading in a male-dominated industry, the importance of mentorship and the development of Pakko's culture of honesty, transparency and diversity. We wrap up the episode with a look at what's next for Nina and Pakko.

11 Apr 2022Nestle's new Easter egg packaging is the catalyst for a conversation with Margaret Stuart about the group's broader sustainable packaging and corporate social responsibility initiatives00:26:30

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Margaret Stuart, Director – Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Nestle, about the company’s sustainable packaging goals, successful initiatives, and its drive towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

Margaret starts the conversation looking at the challenge of creating sustainable Easter egg packaging that ensures the egg makes it safely to the consumer, looks attractive on shelf, and carries clear instructions for recycling – even more important over Easter when research Australian consumers consider recycling. This leads to a discussion on the importance of consumer education and the value of the Australasian Recycling Label to deliver consistent messaging on recycling.

Following this we explore Nestle’s other sustainable packaging initiatives, including the KitKat recycled wrapper project (hear more on Episode 20 of The PKN Podcast), reducing the use of virgin plastic and redesigning packaging to remove small ‘break off’ pieces which are unrecyclable. The discussion then moves onto achieving plastic circularity through advanced and mechanical recycling by collecting and finding other uses for used plastic packaging from consumers.

We wrap up by exploring the multifaceted complexity of corporate social responsibility for major brand owners like Nestle, considering the environment, farming communities, supply chains, social implications, consumer behaviours, nutritional impacts, and production emissions, many of which are interconnected.

20 Jul 2021Leveraging the label: Creating engaging packaging in premium beverage market, with Chris Jackson of Ball & Doggett and Matt Bowman of Interweave Group00:27:51

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, Chris Jackson, self-adhesive national manager at Ball & Doggett and Matt Bowman, production manager at Interweave Group, discuss how packaging labels in the premium beverages sector are a platform for consumer engagement and telling the brand story, including its sustainable positioning.

The discussion starts with a brief background on Chris and Matt’s career and the partnership between the two companies, and then very quickly moves into consumer trends in the premium beverages market. This includes the impact of COVID-19 on buying behaviour, the trend towards premium products and the associated importance of a well-designed label that delivers an emotional impact for the consumer.

Chris and Matt review some of the new products available to enhance not only the visual impact of the pack on shelf, but also how a product feels when held, the use of new label materials that go well beyond paper, and aspects such as back lamination, opacity and translucency that can bring packaging to life on shelf . They acknowledge the explosion in variety of label artwork can create a visual overload for consumers, particularly in booming categories like craft beer, and discuss how labelling has gone beyond design elements like font and colours. This leads to a discussion about Four Pillars gin packaging along with the creation of labels for short run, limited edition products.

The episode rounds out by covering the increased demand from brand managers and consumers for sustainable packaging which has led to an increased use of paper and board along with environmentally friendly inks. Matt says sustainability is topping the design agenda for brands, and Chris highlights some of the new, sustainable products his company is providing. We wrap up on the importance for brands of making an impact with the right choices in packaging design.

14 Sep 2021Reducing single use plastic waste and funding removal of ocean plastic, with Mike Smith of Zero Co00:30:15

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Mike Smith, founder of Zero Co (www.zeroco.com.au), about reducing single use plastic in the home and removing plastic from the oceans.

We start the episode with Mike discussing the inspiration behind Zero Co following his encounters with plastic waste while travelling in remote areas of the planet, leading him to research possible solutions and start a company to help address the problem. He then talks about how the company was started, the three steps required to address the issue of plastic waste and how addressing the problem is core to the organisation's existence.

This leads us to Zero Co's business model that directly funds removal of plastics from the ocean for recycling to produce their products which do not add to the single use plastic problem as they are all reusable & recyclable. Mike acknowledges that it was maybe somewhat overly ambitious to try four things that have never been done before in the one start-up but they have managed to make it work in the end.

Mike talks to us about growth of the company from one of the most successful Australian Kickstarter campaigns to date through to currently having almost 40,000 clients, the level of single use plastic reduction Zero Co is contributing to and the launch of their new personal care products through a pre-order campaign. He also acknowledges the advantages of being eCommerce based given both COVID and the increased prevalence of online shopping, along with the benefits of being closer to their customers.

We wrap the episode by reviewing how Mike's experience gained with his previous two start-ups have helped him with Zero Co, the complexity of starting such an innovative operation during COVID and handling growth. He also gives advice to new startups in the sustainability space and notes the importance of collaboration to solve the problems of recycling & reduction.

10 Aug 2021Sustainable Impact: Eliminating extreme poverty by harnessing the profits from global consumerism, with Daniel Flynn from Thankyou00:33:15

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Daniel Flynn, the co-founder and managing director of Thankyou, discuss the company's vision for reducing extreme poverty globally.

The discussion starts with Daniel reviewing the formation and development of Thankyou and its transition from bottled water to food and personal care products. Daniel also describes dealing with the highly competitive incumbent players they encountered when entering the baby care market. We also review the decisions that lead to exiting the food business and the potential for a return to the water market using recycled PET bottles.

We then move on to Thankyou's certification as a carbon neutral organisation, the difficulty in tracing its supply lines and the business goals that drive operations. This leads to a discussion on the issues encountered trying to scale Thankyou's original model to meet the vision, resulting in the "No Small Plan" campaign.

The episode wraps with a review of lessons learned to date with the campaign, the gap between what consumers say they want compared with what they actually do, and the acknowledgement that creating change is not easy but it matters.

23 Feb 2021Sustainable Sally joins Martogg Group to promote sustainability with recycled plastics.00:27:34

In this episode, our first for 2021, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks about consumer education and brand awareness of sustainability with Sally Williams, aka Sustainable Sally, and Austen Ramage, Product Manager at Martogg Group.

Lindy talks with Austen and Sally about the reasons why Sally has joined forces with Martogg LCM to promote sustainability and recycled plastics. She also learns about Sally's decision to leave Brand Power in order to focus on sustainability and the circular economy.

The discussion includes the efforts and costs associated with using Recycled PET (rPET) containers and the importance of recycling to aid the circular economy. These efforts make use of Sally's "street cred" with consumers and acknowledges the increasingly savvy consumer who is willing to spend more to save the planet.

Lindy then examines the benefits of rPET and how the roadblocks to rPET's adoption are being addressed. Austen describes Martogg's investment in recycling technology with Sally discussing how consumers can be engaged and educated on the benefits of plastics and recycling.

Throughout the discussion the future for both Martogg's recycling and Sally's engagement are discussed and we wrap up with the expectation of more coverage in future episodes. Clearly there are plenty of developments and opportunities in this space and we look forward to bringing them to you.

29 Mar 2022Tackling supply chain issues, high demands and the move to sustainable packaging with Brett Keen from Whakatane Mill and Brad Partington from Ball & Doggett00:20:00

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Brett Keen, the Sales Manager from Whakatane Mill Ltd in New Zealand, and Brad Partington the General Manager of Packaging at Ball & Doggett in Australia, about the places they fill in the market as a packaging provider in Australasia.

Brett starts off by talking to us about Whakatane's ownership history and its 24/7 operating hours, as well as its position as the only folding box board (AKA carton board) manufacturer in Australia and New Zealand. Brad then gives us an insight into Ball & Doggett, which has been operating for over 100 years as a packaging and paper supplier and acts as a representative for international mills in the form of a local distributor, agent and merchant.

The discussion then moves on to how the global supply chain issues in relation to obtaining materials and shipping products to clients has created a high demand for Whakatane's packaging solutions in the Australasian market, with a surprising number of international parties also requesting their services. Brett explains that many clients are also moving towards sustainable packaging solutions by moving away from single use plastics and towards fiber based products.

We wrap up by looking forward to Whakatane's future projects, the first being the disk filler project in November of 2022, which aims to decrease water usage by 75% and massively increase their output capacity. This will be followed by its expansion project in July of 2023, that involves upgrading the paper machinery to further increase their output capacity for bulk orders, while simultaneously improving their quality. The project also brings a significant improvement in the sustainability of the packaging board by reducing the use of plastic wrapping by 160 tonnes per annum, in addition to eliminating Whatakane’s use of gas for its steam mills.

24 Sep 2023Packaging moments of truth, with APCO's Chris Foley00:34:26

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News talks to Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), about advancing Australia’s circular packaging economy.

We review APCO’s recent Town Hall meetings with its members, as a consultative process following the National Packaging Targets Review, and Government’s announcements earlier this year that it plans to change the current voluntary environment and intervene with legislation. The discussion explores the balance of regulation, administration, and autonomy to achieve targets. It examines insights provided by the participants, and the topics discussed in the forums, with a focus on the structure of the proposed framework model, its funding, governance, targets, and scope of its compliance and enforcement.

This detailed review of these sessions and their outcomes also provides insights into the waste and recycling management process, encouraging mandated recycled content, and the steps that need to be taken to achieve these goals.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Andrew Manly, Communications Director of the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) on the digitisation of packaging

We commence with Andrew providing an overview of AIPIA's formation and history before discussing the multiple formats of intelligent, or smart, packaging, including RFID, NFC, printed antennas and digital devices plus even improved QR codes. Andrew highlights the various sophisticated and ubiquitous technologies along with the emergence of consortia and collaboration amongst companies providing the many components required to implement and support smart packaging.

The conversation covers the reductions in pricing and increases in capabilities being experienced as the smart packaging technologies develop and the improvement in consumer engagement they provide. Andrew notes the need for a strategic focus on delivering smart packaging and the adoption of a holistic approach to identify opportunities for consumer education about the benefits being offered.

We review a number of examples of smart packaging campaigns, the advanced level of Australian projects, the need to further reduce the price of smart packaging and how digitisation of packaging is facilitating the use of QR codes. The episode wraps with a discussion of the AIPIA congress being held on-line on 16th November and Andrew's views on integrating smart packaging within production lines and sustainable smart packaging.

19 Apr 2023Unpacking APCO’s Review of the 2025 National Packaging Targets00:44:24

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), about the Review of the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

In the face of the disappointing reality delivered by the headline data that the targets are not on track to be met by December 2025, Foley calls for a stronger co-regulatory model which strikes a balance between industry-led action and effective government regulation.

Foley dissects some of the data in depth. The biggest challenge lies with the target of recycling or composting 70 per cent of plastic packaging. The discussion gives us a comprehensive evaluation of current packaging solutions for flexible and rigid plastic packaging and whether we can meet our capacity to recycle them.

We discuss the APCO Review’s key findings and suggestions, with a focus on what can be achieved by the 2025 deadline, and also looking beyond 2025. Foley talks on resetting the co-regulatory and collaborative frameworks between government and industry, and interventions to regulate packaging materials to promote circularity.

29 Jun 2021Upskilling to drive sustainable packaging success, with Ralph Moyle, winner of the WPO's 2021 Lifetime Achievement award00:36:42

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Ralph Moyle, winner of the World Packaging Organisation's 2021 Lifetime Achievement award, discuss the importance of investing in employee training and sustainable business practices for a company's bottom line.

The episode starts with a discussion of Ralph’s achievements that led to his global recognition, and then reviews his career highlights before discussing the lessons learned from Golden Circle's introduction of shelf ready packaging. This leads to the observation that sustainability is a key driver for ensuring a business is profitable along with Ralph's views on the impact of technology and the increasing rate of change in packaging uptake of that technology over the past few decades.

The discussion moves on to the importance of training and how companies that fail to invest in their staff are missing out on significant returns on investment and losing opportunities to improve their business. Ralph also talks about the training courses available from the Australian Institute of Packaging and their continual updates to accommodate online delivery and changes in the industry.

We close out the episode with Ralph's views on the importance of sustainability, aspects of the circular economy that are yet to be solved and the increased effort that will be required to reach the APCO target of 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging. Ralph wraps up with the need to reduce food waste, some of AIP's greatest achievements and his advice for everyone in packaging.

13 Oct 2020Packaging that Protects the Planet with Joanne Howarth, Founder & CEO of Planet Protector Packaging00:28:02

PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Joanne Howarth, the Founder & CEO of Planet Protector Packaging.

Joanne is an entrepreneur with big passion determined to make a big impact.

Joanne explains how she was driven to find a planet-friendly form of packaging through her extensive use of polystyrene packaging for cold chain distribution in her previous role. This led her to research the use of sheep’s wool as a natural thermal insulator, allowing her to convert otherwise discarded belly wool into Woolpack, a lining material for boxes that can be recycled or composted.

Woolpack delivers superior performance to polystyrene for thermal packaging and is currently being used by clients shipping dairy products, meat, seafood and pharmaceuticals. It was recently featured as a case study with the World Wildlife Fund Australia's "Plastic: Revolution to Reality" report while the Lobster Protector variant won the gold medal award in the Food Design of the Year category at the 2020 Australasian Packaging and Innovation Design (PIDA) Awards,

Joanne was recently named one of the seven winning laureates of the 2020 Cartier Women’s Initiative, the French jeweller’s international business program aimed at uncovering, recognising and supporting women entrepreneurs worldwide. This has provided her with new business connections and led to working with the UN's Industrial Development Organisation to support their sustainability development goals.

Planet Protector is currently working with the Tasmanian government to replace polystyrene as part of the state's sustainable packaging initiative and is in the process of establishing a production site in Tasmania to reduce the cost of transporting packaging from the mainland. They are also seeking capital to move into the South East Asian market with a particular interest in Mongolia due to the volume of wool the country produces.

We wrap up by discussing the importance of government support to help incentivise organisations to use sustainable packaging. Momentum is slowly gathering with Australian companies, but we are lagging behind New Zealand where the supermarkets have mandated the removal of polystyrene packaging for all products supplied to them.

04 Aug 2024July: Packaging News Unpacked00:23:57

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, is joined by Wayne Robinson, Editor of Print21 and Associate Editor of PKN, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in July.

The episode focuses on packaging recycling, starting with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)’s extension of its approval for the Soft Plastics Taskforce (comprising Australia’s three major supermarkets Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths) to continue to collaborate to find a solution to processing the 11m tonne stockpile of soft plastic from the failed REDcycle program. We review news of two soft plastics recycling facilities: iQRenew in NSW has just commissioned its new line which can process 15,000 tonnes of post-consumer soft plastics annually, and Recycling Plastics Australia in SA is starting construction on a $40m facility which will see some 14,000 tonnes of soft plastics recycled per annum. In the course of the discussion we also review the progress on kerbside plastic recycling schemes Curby and the National Plastics Recycling Scheme, take a closer look at the new brand identity that recycler Close the Loop has unveiled, and discuss what the commissioning of Australia’s first oxygen-fuelled furnace at Visy’s glass recycling facility in Sydney means for sustainable packaging.

Covering rigid plastics, we explore Pact Group’s involvement in the new circular Drums-to-Drums initiative to recycle agricultural chemical containers. We also consider Samsara Eco’s successful $100m funding raise to progress and scale up its enzymatic recycling technology.

Lastly, to wrap up this episode, we review SIG’s launch of a recycle-ready bag-in-box packaging for water, Australasian Recycling Label’s recognition in the AFR Sustainability list, and remind listeners about the upcoming Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) awards.

06 Sep 2021Vendor consortiums facilitating progress towards Industry 4.0, with Open IIoT00:44:41

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, hosts a panel with representatives from five of the member companies in the Open IIoT consortium to discuss bringing the Industrial Internet of Things to Australian manufacturing and production processes as part of the transition to Industry 4.0.

The panellists for this discussion are Jim Wallace, sales manager Australian & New Zealand at Balluff, Harry Mulder, principal control engineer at Beckhoff, Wade Leslie, sales manager Australia & New Zealand at Kuka, Max Jarmatz, managing director Oceania at NORD Drivesystems and Jozef Ceh, global accounts manager and digital business development manager at SMC Corporation.

The episode begins with the panellists introducing themselves and describing their company's contribution to the consortium and areas of expertise. We then move on to a discussion on the most common barriers to adoption amongst clients despite many acknowledging that they must improve operations to survive.

With Australia lagging on uptake of IIoT and Industry 4.0, especially compared to Europe, it is important to implement initial solutions that value add within existing processes, demonstrate benefits and then expand to the rest of the plant. The panellists acknowledge the importance of big data and its integral role in supporting statistical analysis through data mining, often with artificial intelligence systems helping to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, preventative maintenance and reduction in supply chain delays.

The episode wraps with a look at the opportunities provided through responding to COVID restrictions, the importance of open communications to avoid proprietary lock-in and the panellists' views on the future for Australian manufacturing.

02 Sep 2024August: Packaging News Unpacked00:22:53

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, is joined by Wayne Robinson, Associate Editor of PKN and Editor of Print21, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in August.

The discussion starts off by reviewing Pact Group’s statements to Victorian Parliament regarding the challenges involved with recycling, pushing for mandatory requirements which incentivise domestic recycled content over cheaper international imports. Similarly, we get insights into the recycling roundtable led by Visy and Nine Newspapers, which called for national standards for materials and labelling, and kerbside harmonisation. Following this we unpack APCO’s 2030 Strategic Plan, which puts more responsibility on the industry and utilises an eco-modulated fee model, which rewards brand owners who improve the circularity of their products.

Keeping on theme with sustainability, we also discuss the NZ start up which has raised NZ$8.5m to replace single use styrofoam with a compostable pelletised mushroom packaging. We also explore updates in the beverage industry with the immense $105.5m investment into a warmfill line at the Coca-Cola Europacific (CCEP) Moorabbin beverage filling plant plant, and take a closer look at beverage packaging producers Orora’s FY 24 performance, which saw it recording increased profits as its canning operations boomed while glass fell.

With many financial reports now available, we review their figures with Pact Group seeing increased earnings despite a challenging market, Amcor experiencing a dip in growth with an uptick in the last quarter and Close the Loop’s major increase in revenue in the US while conversely having decreased in Australia.

We wrap up by getting an update on printing group IVE’s continued expansion into folding carton packaging, and review the exciting night that was the PIDA awards.

27 Sep 2022Regeneration, the natural evolution beyond sustainability, with Cath Cornaggia of Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials ANZ00:28:05

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Cath Cornaggia, Commercial Director of Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials, Australia & New Zealand.

We discuss the concept of regeneration as a natural evolution beyond sustainability, which focuses on active replenishment over just reducing the resources we use. Cath Cornaggia tells us how this is accomplished by the digitisation of packaging and further collaboration within the industry. The discussion also explores the role that the government, packaging suppliers, and research play in this initiative. This gives us an interesting insight into how Avery Dennison is implementing these solutions globally in various industries.

The episode also unpacks defining and achieving a circular economy, and the role of the consumer and societal equality has in achieving this. Finally we discuss the opening of Avery Dennison's new facility in Moorabbin, designed with sustainability in mind.

11 Aug 2024Sustainable packaging practices in the wine industry00:22:44

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News talks to Marissa Altmeier, Packaging Technologist Manager at Pernod Ricard Winemakers, about the ‘Going Hoodless’ campaign and other initiatives.

Winner of the 2024 PKN Women in Packaging Sustainability Leader Award, Marissa Altmeier has been integrally involved in assessing the packaging materials across the Pernod Ricard portfolio to find areas where packaging materials can be reduced or switched for a more sustainable option. The discussion provides a detailed insight into how Pernod Ricard undertook this process for the ‘Going Hoodless’ campaign spearheaded by Marissa, which saw a 400 tonne decrease in hard-to-recycle plastic-coated aluminium hoods going to landfill, this is in addition to bringing improvements to supply and production efficiencies. Integral to this was managing consumer perceptions and preferences, engaging the marketing team, and overcoming challenges when collaborating with suppliers. The discussion also explores the transition to lightweight Riesling bottles which has resulted in reduced carbon emissions, decreased use of virgin glass, and improved stacking for transportation.

We wrap up with a review of the Women in Packaging event, the experience Marrissa had participating, and some sage advice for others looking to drive positive change and sustainability practices within their organisations.

30 Nov 2021Collective Impact and our progress towards the National Packaging Targets, with Brooke Donnelly and Dr Helen Lewis00:33:29

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Brooke Donnelly, chief executive officer of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), and sustainability consultant Dr Helen Lewis, about Australia's progress towards the 2025 national packaging targets.

We start the episode with a review of the Collective Impact study and its recently released report on Australia's progress towards the 2025 targets. This includes the economic impact of sending potentially recyclable/reusable products to landfill and a breakdown of materials sent to landfill to identify areas where new efforts are required.

Brooke and Helen discuss the current progress towards each target and differences in reductions achieved by material, along with the impacts from increased consumption, areas for improvement and a breakdown of the main challenges to consider for each target. This leads to a review of the efforts required to meet the targets, including driving packaging product design, increased education and new or improved industrial mechanisms for processing materials.

We then move on to the response to the report from industry and various interest groups, the benefits achieved to date from the benchmarking and statistics gathered to date, the need for alternative systems to drive recycling and possible methods for incentivising the use of recycled content over virgin materials.

The episode wraps with acknowledgements of the progress made to date, the willingness to change from consumers and industry along with the hope this provides that we will meet the targets in 2025.

30 Mar 2021Recycling label liner material to reduce landfill, with Jessica Walters of Labelmakers and Felicia Richardson of Enviroflex00:31:19

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, Jessica Walters, Head of Sales & Marketing at Labelmakers, and Felicia Richardson, CEO of Enviroflex, discuss their recent collaboration to recycle label liners rather than sending them to landfill.

Labelmakers Group, Australia's biggest label printing company, has secured the rights to the worldwide patented RecuLiner technology for Australia and New Zealand and is collaborating with building materials producer Enviroflex to create a local, circular solution for recycling glassine liner from pressure senitive labels that would otherwise go to landfill.

The discussion starts with Jessica describing the RecuLiner technology and how it helps to reduce waste going to landfill, which in Australia accounts for some 10,000 tonnes per annum. Felicia then explains how Enviroflex will be working with Labelmakers to use RecuLiner's technology to convert the glassine liner into insulation products.

Jessica explains that they expect to start manufacturing insulation using the recycled product well in advance of the 2025 National Packaging Target deadlines, noting that Labelmakers' customers have been very enthusiastic about signing up to the new program with the group's new Liner Recycling Services department. This leads into a discussion regarding the importance of innovation and collaboration in establishing a circular economy for the various materials within Australia's packaging framework.

The discussion then moves on to women navigating their way to leadership in a male dominated industry. Both Felicia and Jessica talk about diversity across their organisations and in senior management along with achieving work/life balance and the importance of mentorship. Felicia also notes the benefits that have resulted from the flexible working arrangements established due to COVID.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Anthony Harrison, CEO and Founder of Twelve8 Technology, cover the company's ground-breaking technologies "PaktoEarth" and "SafetoShare".

The conversation starts with Anthony's career development, his love of being an entrepreneur, how that passion motivates him and his focus on helping not for profit businesses. This leads to a discussion of Twelve8 Technology's formation to help both people and the environment along with its focus on integrity and ensuring its products produce proven results, and that its claims are verified.

Anthony describes the PaktoEarth plastic additive technology and explains how it presents a compelling interim solution to dealing with “escaped plastic” that ends up in landfill, as it enables a full degradation process within two years.

Anthony explains that the SafetoShare product is an easy-to-apply resin coating for fibre-based packaging (cartonboard and corrugated) that repels 99.9 per cent of bacteria and viruses.

The discussion for both products covers target markets, take-up globally and roadblocks in Australia with a focus on cost effectiveness, benefits for potential clients, and international sales growth.

13 Apr 2021Are we on the right path for managing plastic? Dr Ross Headifen of Biogone weighs in00:29:16

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News and Dr Ross Headifen, founder of Biogone, an Australian eco-conscious company dedicated to designing and delivering cost effective biodegradable products, discuss the challenges and pitfalls of managing plastics.

Ross presents his concerns that the broader goals of Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets – to make all plastic recyclable or compostable by 2025 – are not achievable in the time frame.

The discussion includes a comparison of recycling vs reusability, the life expectancy of plastics, compostability, biodegradability and capturing the energy trapped in plastics.

Ross also explains the difference between atomic and molecular recycling, how plastic recycling only delays the inevitable and why, despite all our efforts, more and more new plastic is being produced and subsequently found in landfills and waterways. This leads to a review of methods to efficiently extract the energy trapped in plastics while also reducing the volumes being discarded into the environment.

The episode wraps up with Ross explaining the concept behind Biogone's biodegradable plastic products and their ability to provide us with the benefits of plastics while reducing their environmental impacts and giving the world time to develop improved recycling methods.

28 Sep 2021The plug is now in the tub! Challenges and opportunities in plastics now the government has banned export of unprocessed plastics, with Helen Millicer00:34:41

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Helen Millicer, director at One Planet Consulting and a Churchill Fellow, on the fundamental changes required in Australia to meet the 2025 plastics packaging targets.

The discussion starts with the major challenges associated with litter polluting our oceans and importance of increasing reuse and recycling of plastics within Australia following the Australian government's world-first ban on exporting unprocessed plastics to other countries. A comparison is made with Europe where even the worst performing EU country is recycling plastic at levels far ahead of Australia.

Helen describes key changes introduced by Victoria in kerbside collection and plastic bags, celebrates the national actions to clean up plastics by removing single use disposable items, and calls for more collective and collaborative ventures for reusable packaging, and price incentives for recyclable packaging and costs for non-recyclables. New ways of thinking about packaging are required to increase return and reuse while government mandates will help to create incentives for reuse and recycled content.

The episode notes that Australia is one of few countries in the world blessed with the full plastics production supply chain on-shore which provides us a unique capacity for a more circular economy for plastics. Significant investment from government and private sources is increasing reprocessing facilities in Australia, but game changing initiatives are required in reuse, collection and reprocessing at scale or Australia will not meet its 2025 packaging targets.

We wrap up with a look at Helen's new work with the federal government, and the importance of collaboration, strategies, targets and financial incentives to bring about the changes required to increase reuse, repair and recycling across all product lines, not just plastics.

11 May 2021In the bag: The story behind Woolworths locally made paper recyclable shopping bags, with Tom Lunn of Detpak00:21:52

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News and Tom Lunn, Detpak's General Manager of Marketing and Innovation, discuss Woolworths' recyclable paper bags and Detpak's efforts to make them possible.

The episode starts with a discussion on the inspiration for this initiative and Woolworths' objectives for switching from single-use plastic to fibre-based bags. The material development and the requirements the bags must meet are reviewed along with the newly developed machinery used to produce them in Australia.

Tom confirms that the fibre material for the bags is, itself, recycled from corrugated shipper packaging received by Woolworths, further improving the benefits through a reduction in waste and environmental impact. The discussion then moves on to the lessons learned from an initial trial in South Australia and how they are being applied to the national roll-out schedule.

We then move on to reviewing the larger market trends on recycling and fibre packaging, the impacts of COVID on the project and Detpak’s top trends in packaging. The episode wraps up with Tom's views on the packaging industry moving towards the circular economy and the important issues that must be addressed to achieve this goal.

23 Mar 2021Leveraging the power of brand and packaging design with Nikki Moeschinger, Managing Director, BrandOpus00:34:18

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News and Nikki Moeschinger, the managing director of BrandOpus discuss the multilayered topic of brand and pack design, exploring how brand, often the most valuable asset on a company’s balance sheet, is regularly under-utilised, misunderstood and dismissed as “the logo.”

Nikki explains how, in the context of FMCG, a strong brand can be brought to life on the all-important packaging touchpoint to deter competition, protect market share and help to command a price premium.

The discussion then moves into an outline of BrandOpus' four-step framework for the creation or renovation of a brand, covering the importance of creating and consistently using distinctive brand assets and the pitfalls of surveying irrational consumers in order to rationalise their behaviour through standard techniques when researching brand and packaging design. The framework allows BrandOpus to work with clients to ensure that their product packaging reflects and supports the key aspects of their brand to ensure all touchpoints with consumers are consistent.

Nikki provides a case study of a packaging assessment and subsequent design change which includes a discussion of how that change was assessed, planned, and implemented to carefully manage the change for the client and their consumers. She then moves on to identifying a market category that is ripe for branding disruption, along with the concerns that can be associated with introducing technology to packaging such as augmented reality, QR codes and other new features.

We wrap up with a discussion of a project that BrandOpus conducted to assess, design, and introduce key branding packaging for a new product recently launched to the market.

16 Mar 2021Richard Smith from Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific on solving the flexible packaging paradox, and the Holy Grail 2.0 project00:26:39

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Richard Smith, Director of Sustainability at Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific about the flexible packaging paradox and the Holy Grail 2.0 project.

We start by discussing the dilemma that flexible packaging is so successful due to its numerous sustainable advantages yet these very properties make it hard to recover and also low value in the recovery stream. We then move on to the progress being made to improve the recovery of flexible packaging material, including work by RedGroup/RedCycle and Replas, and the latest developments in kerbside recovery of flexible packaging.

Richard covers four key areas required to improve the circular life cycle for flexible packaging, which include the use of common materials that are optimised for recycling to support critical mass at collectors, consumer engagement, kerbside collection and advanced chemical recycling to ensure the recycled materials can be product safe when reused. The big picture view of the circular life cycle requires policies that will support bringing recycling in-country which, in turn, will create new jobs, income and opportunities.

We then move on to discussing the Holy Grail 2.0 project and its goal of improving recycling through the use of digital watermarks. Richard explains how the watermarks would work, the project's achievements to date and Amcor’s involvement with the project.

Given Richard's role as a director on the board of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), we wrap up the discussion by covering the economic opportunities associated with meeting the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

07 May 2024April: Packaging News Unpacked00:30:12

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News is joined by Kim Berry, Editor of Food & Drink Business, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in April.

We unravel the recent developments concerning Qenos, an Australian plastic resin manufacturer, which has been placed in Voluntary Administration and closed its Botany manufacturing facility. We discuss the impact of this decision on the local packaging industry, highlighting concerns regarding resin standardisation, supply chain interruptions, and the setback to Australia's plastics circularity ambitions.

Shifting to broader industry updates, we examine the ongoing bid by Raphael Geminder to acquire full control of Pact and delist it from the ASX. Additionally, we explore the removal of tariffs on Australian wines by China and its implications for the packaging sector, particularly in boosting demand for glass bottles and labels. We also cover significant global mergers, such as the approved acquisition of WestRock by Smurfit Kappa, and notable acquisitions within the food packaging space, including BioPak's acquisition of Huskee. On the recycling front, we highlight Visy's achievements in increasing recycled content in glass packaging and Pact Group's efforts to recycle milk bottles, earning it recognition at the Chemistry Australia Industry Awards.

Wrapping up the discussion, we touch upon Australia's progress towards packaging sustainability targets, the upcoming Hive Awards, and the Women in Packaging awards, reflecting on the industry's commitment to innovation and positive change.

23 Nov 2021How soft plastics can come full circle, with REDcycle's Liz Kasell00:24:07

Episode Title:

How soft plastics can come full circle, with REDcycle’s Liz Kasell.

Show Notes:

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Liz Kasell, the CEO and founder of REDcycle, a Melbourne-based consulting and recycling organisation that has over the last ten years developed and implemented recovery initiatives for post-consumer soft plastic across Australia with over 1900 collection points, mostly in Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.

At the time of recording, REDcycle has just announced its merger with advanced recycling pioneer iQ Renew, and here Liz outlines the terms of the merger and how this will add impetus to both companies’ efforts to help industry achieve Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Target for soft plastics recycling. Through this powerful collaboration, REDcycle hopes to accelerate and leverage the key competencies of both organisations to achieve better outcomes than what is possible in isolation.

Liz talks about the need for robust and resilient pull-through of recycled content products throughout the value chain to create a successful circular economy. She urges all stakeholders to play their part by going out of their way to search for and buy recycled content products, so driving end-market demand. Liz also talks about how this switch in industry behaviour would be beneficial to the overall Australian economy as more jobs are created and more manufacturing is stimulated with less dependence on exported materials.

We wrap the episode up with Liz’s plans for REDcycle and her expectations for the company in the next ten years. Liz hopes to expand her collaboration with organisations to include more Australian citizens who could become a crucial part of the end market journey by making material circularity a reality.

12 Oct 2021Increasing packaging supply chain agility using Industry 4.0 and RFID technology, with Arnaud Gay and Praveen Kannan00:17:19

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Arnaud Gay, head of marketing and systems solutions at Thomas Warburton, and Praveen Kannan, market project manager at SICK Australia, about Industry 4.0, RFID technology the benefits they can bring to the packaging supply chain.

We start the episode with an overview of the two companies and the establishment of their partnership to bring smart factory technology to the packaging supply chain. Their new Inventory Management System uses Industry 4.0 and RFID technologies to automate and secure the Kanban lean manufacturing process.

The conversation covers the improvements offered through improved tracking of assets, easier inventory management and increased efficiencies. These improvements, in turn, increase an organisation's agility and its ability to meet ever changing customer demands.

Arnaud and Praveen note that the companies investing in Industry 4.0 technologies are better positioned to adapt to supply chain disruptions and that, with over a decade of these technologies being deployed, Industry 4.0 represents a proven and sustainable way forward.

We wrap the episode with the observation that an investment in these technologies by manufacturing companies will far outweigh the costs they will incur if they cannot evolve with the changing business environment.

22 Mar 2022How digitally printed packaging can boost SME shelf presence and market growth, with Matt Ellis and Jordyn Evans00:28:39

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with managing director of Luminar, Matt Ellis, and the founder of Mingle Seasoning, Jordyn Evans, about short-run digital packaging solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their impacts on the company’s growth.

Jordyn kicks off the discussion telling us about how Mingle, which started six years ago in her kitchen and was inspired by the lack of healthy seasonings available in the market, is now shaking up the seasonings category nationwide. Following this, Matt explores the evolution of Luminar first starting as a family business and adapting to provide SMEs with a packaging solution (digitally printed labels and flexible packaging) which allows for variation and low order quantities.

The discussion then moves on to the difficulties that Mingle faced in finding a supplier who could provide them with packaging for their small volumes and how Luminar met this challenge. We also explore how packaging suppliers can optimise growth for modern entrepreneurs and discuss the value of considering packaging design first when developing a new product.

We wrap up the episode by looking at Mingle's plans to roll out new products for the major supermarkets and utilise their online business to innovate and trial new products. In turn, Luminar is aiming to ensure it can provide an on demand and fast turnaround service for SMEs through more automation, communication, and team alignment.

01 Jun 2021How the cobot revolution will benefit manufacturing in Australia and New Zealand, with James McKew, Regional Director for Universal Robots Asia-Pacific00:25:37

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, and James McKew Regional Director for Universal Robots Asia-Pacific, discuss cobots and the benefits they can bring to manufacturing.

The episode starts with James explaining the difference between a standard, industrial robot and a collaborative robot, also known as a cobot. He explains their benefits along with the typical tasks and environments they can be found in.

The discussion covers the technological advances in robotics that are driving the improvement in current cobots as compared to the original models. This leads to a review of how cobots can assist small to medium organisations, allowing their staff to be in control of the automation and work with it rather than being replaced by it.

Pricing is an important aspect of installing technology in manufacturing and James addresses the savings that are possible through the use of cobots which, in turn, allow Australian and New Zealand manufacturing to compete with overseas production. We wrap up the episode with a description of how cobots can best benefit regional manufacturing.

09 Mar 2021WOSUP's war on single-use plastics with co-founders Martin Salter and Karl Page00:30:41

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with the co-founders of social impact enterprise WOSUP, Martin Salter (CEO) and Karl Page (COO) about their company and its war on single-use plastic pollution in the context of disposable cups used at events. With over 500 billion disposable cups used annually across the globe, many of them end up polluting our waterways and Australians are a big contributor to the problem.

Martin starts by telling us about the motivating force that lead to the establishment of WOSUP and its sustainable, circular solution that provides non-plastic, reusable alternatives to disposable cups. Karl then goes into more detail about the product and service proposition, explaining how it is a more sustainable solution than the current single-use disposable cups.

The discussion then moves on to WOSUP's target market and its engagement to date with these organisations before covering how the start-up reached its current choice of material and its alignment with WOSUP’s ethical objectives.

We also discuss WOSUP's use of Bluetooth, RFID and QR codes to provide a digital platform and enhanced data for its commercial partners. 20 Apr 2021Ethical consumerism and Choice for Life with Sustainable Sally Williams00:26:03

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News and Sally Williams, aka Sustainable Sally, discuss ethical consumerism and Sally's new Choice for Life platform.

Sally discusses her history with Brand Power and the factors that led to her transition to the Choice for Life, including recognising the rise of the conscious consumer. With surveys indicating more consumers than ever are including sustainability in their purchasing choices, it is clear that unsustainable brands are on the way out.

Lindy and Sally also discuss Unilever's new "BYO Container" refill station at the Moonee Ponds Coles store, consumer education, and scaling up this trial. This leads to further discussion of specific initiatives towards differentiating recyclable packaging through unique shapes and art work, such as Coca-Cola's fully recycled PET bottles and Smarties' sustainably sourced paper packaging.

Sally notes that consumers are looking for sustainable brands and recyclable packaging, which has resulted in Choice for Life helping consumers to find those brands that are progressing towards sustainability and a circular economy. The episode wraps with a discussion on the benefits Choice for Life can provide brands and agencies with promotion of their sustainable efforts.

20 Oct 2020How packaging can help solve the problem of food waste00:32:56

PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Karli Verghese and Nerida Kelton. Karli is the Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow in Industrial Design at RMIT and the Reduce Program Leader at the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). Nerida is the Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), and project lead for the Save Food Packaging project in the Fight Food Waste CRC.

We start the episode by noting that food waste is a major environmental problem that was recently highlighted by the UN's Food & Agriculture Organisation which held the first International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on the 29th of September. Here in Australia, over 7.3 million tonnes of food is wasted annually across the supply and consumption chain with 34% of that waste being in the home.

Karli provides an overview of the Fight Food Waste CRC and her role there along with a summary of the insights being gained from the various projects currently underway within the CRC. After this, Nerida describes how the AIP is involved with CRC, establishing guidelines to help packaging technologists minimise food waste across the chain, including in the home. This leads to a discussion about awareness of packaging's ability to reduce food waste and how there can be no solution to food waste without collaboration between all parties involved in the chain.

The discussion then moves on to the importance of design and the use of active and intelligent packaging to prevent damage and spoilage, extend shelf life and preserve and enhance product appeal while still providing convenience and also communicating to consumers how to handle, store, prepare and reuse food products. We also discuss the changes in packaging to accommodate the shift in home sizes, where many people now are cooking for only one or two people, not a whole family. Examples of innovative designs include Woolworths’ new recyclable meat packaging and Hazeldene Chicken's recyclable, freezer-ready packaging that extends shelf life and which won the WorldStar Packaging that Saves Food Award this year.

The concern is raised that accommodating smaller portion sizes can lead to more packaging but this can be balanced through innovative design that better accommodates recycling and a reduction in food wastage. This highlights the importance of taking a holistic view of the entire chain to determine the trade-offs between packaging and reduction of waste.

We wrap up the episode with a view of the current status projects within the CRC and AIP along with the plans they have for the short to medium term, including activities associated with next year's International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

26 Oct 2021The way we communicate about plastic waste can influence consumer behaviour change, with Dr Kim Borg00:30:02

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Dr Kim Borg from the Monash Sustainable Development Institute’s research enterprise Behaviour Works Australia, about the recent research into the impact of tailored messaging on consumers' approach to single-use plastics.

The research study was led by Dr Borg, along with colleagues Professor Jo Lindsay and Dr Jim Curtis and was conducted among 1,001 Victorian adults to determine how media content about plastic could influence perceptions, intentions and behaviours of two groups — ‘plastic users’ and ‘plastic avoiders’.

This in-depth interview not only aims at finding out the why and how behind the research but also discusses the intriguing results. Dr Borg explains the process of ensuring the results would be conclusive, including deducing different types of consumers and assessing various communication tactics on them.

The conversation turns to considering the effect that COVID-19 has had in reversing the trend to reusable packaging, due to the increased use of single-use plastic products for takeaway products driven by the hygiene-first ideology.

We wrap the episode with recommendations for environmental communicators on messaging against unnecessary and problematic (difficult to recycle) single-use plastics and introducing positive change for society.

The research findings have been published in the paper Targeted Change: Using Behavioral Segmentation to Identify and Understand Plastic Consumers and How They Respond to Media Communications in the journal Environmental Communication which can be found at: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17524032.2021.1956558

10 Nov 2020Roll 'n' Recycle: a new opportunity for flexible packaging & kerbside recycling.00:29:53

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Joe Foster and Jessica Ansell from O F Packaging about the company’s new "Roll 'n' Recycle" initiative developed in partnership with PREP Design.

We start with a discussion about the Roll 'n' Recycle initiative's background and how it came about due to the difficulties associated with recycling soft plastics, the majority of which have a mixed plastic composition. Roll 'n' Recycle has produced monopolymer soft plastic products to meet the physical requirements of packaging while still being recyclable, all while addressing the cost barrier typically associated with these products.

Joe & Jessica explain how Roll 'n' Recycle aligns with the existing recycling industry, pending updates to the Australasian Recycling Label to include Roll 'n' Recycle and the importance of educating the consumers and governments. They also cover the buy-back of Roll 'n' Recycle material from recycling facilities and its return to the market after being recycled.

We wrap up by discussing engagement with government and community groups to reduce the quantity of items going to landfill along with the next steps to progress the uptake of Roll 'n' Recycle products in industry.

31 Aug 2021Giving label waste a new life, with Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence and Petrina Bint00:19:29

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks to Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence, sustainability consultant with UPM Raflatac, and Petrina Bint, general manager labels at Wedderburn, regarding recycling label liners through the innovative RafCycle.

The episode commences with a review of Carol's work with UPM Raflatac, Wedderburn's business and Petrina's work with them. Carol then identifies the different types of waste encountered along the label lifecycle while Petrina talks about the level of label waste that Wedderburn and their customers are dealing with.

We then move on to reviewing RafCycle and how it works to allow the recycling of label backing paper, including the conversion of label waste into pulp that is then recycled for use as magazine paper. This, in turn, allows the resulting paper to be processed through standard recycling systems multiple times in its life.

Petrina talks about Wedderburn's experience with RafCycle, having engaged with the process towards the end of 2018, their expansion of the process into New Zealand and the amount of waste that has been diverted from landfill. She also notes how customers are provided full traceability of their provided waste product through the recycling and how this has become a major sales feature for Wedderburn.

Carol notes RafCycle's use with other customers in Australia and New Zealand, its support for the circular economy and how sending containers to Germany for processing can provide a net carbon reduction compared to sending the waste to landfill.

We wrap the episode with the observation that labels are here to stay due to their versatility, range of applications and packaging recycling requirements. RafCycle is another step towards the circular economy and every step counts.

27 Jul 2021Transition to Industry 4.0 now to increase productivity and decrease costs, with John Broadbent, director of RealisePotential00:28:17

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, and John Broadbent, director of RealisePotential, discuss the what, why and how of Industry 4.0.

The discussion starts with a review of the three previous revolutions in the industrial world and an overview of the fourth that's currently in progress through the introduction of computerisation and connectivity. The integration of systems, storage and data analysis are helping to refine production and better target operational improvements.

John notes the three main factors that are maturing and converging to help drive Industry 4.0 and also steps through the issues that are preventing Australian manufacturers from engaging with it. This leads to a discussion of the results being achieved by members of the World Economic Forum's Global Lighthouse Network and reports by Deloitte demonstrating increases in productivity and reductions in energy consumption.

Thanks to the benefits being achieved by Industry 4.0, the gap between those adopting this approach and those who haven't is widening at a rapid pace. John steps us through the four stages of operational maturity achieved with Industry 4.0 and the questions organisations should be asking to help them assess their readiness.

We wrap with a discussion of leveraging existing technologies to transform in stages and the resources available to assist organisations plan their transition.

21 Sep 2021Industry collaboration and efforts to implement the circular economy, with Sanjay Dayal of Pact Group00:34:20

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Sanjay Dayal, CEO of Pact Group, on Pact's role in industry collaborations and its alignment with the circular economy.

We start the episode with a discussion on Pact's ability to lead the circular economy and its work across the value chain to produce and use recycled materials along with producing reusable products. This leads to Pact's role in instigating cross-industry collaborations, many with organisations that compete with each other, to increase the levels of recycling being performed within Australia and New Zealand.

Sanjay also covers Pact's market research on consumer willingness to support sustainability and recycling, including moving to a four bin system for recycling. This progresses to a discussion on government's role in implementing the circular economy, lessons learned from foreign initiatives and the benefits being realised through government purchasing policies and mandates.

Finally, we review the impact of COVID on Pact's operations and the changes Sanjay has implemented in Pact to drive improvements over all. We wrap with Sanjay stating the importance of getting involved in the circular economy to help meet Australia's 2025 National Packaging Targets.

You can learn more about Pact Group's steps towards the circular economy at their award-winning website: pactgroup.com

30 Sep 2020Better Packaging with Pierre Pienaar, president of the World Packaging Organisation00:36:41

PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Pierre Pienaar, president of the World Packaging Organisation, to discuss the organisation’s goal to bring about a ‘better quality of life through better packaging for more people’.

To set the context, Lindy provides a snapshot of PKN Packaging News' sixty years of history, its focus on the packaging industry and the rapid change in packaging which is helping to make this the most exciting time to be in the industry. We then discuss the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), its engagement with the UN, the role of its president and Pierre's three main objectives which are to reduce food waste, reduce packaging waste and increase global awareness of packaging.

Pierre highlights the importance of educating children in first to third grade to build consumer awareness of packaging and recycling at an early age. He notes the UN's statement that, at our current rate of non-sustainable packaging use, by 2050 we will need the equivalent of three planet Earths to provide sufficient resources. Pierre discusses the circular economy, the importance of waste elimination through recycling and how packaging can be the solution rather than the problem. He also notes the importance of businesses having suitably trained and qualified people in charge of packaging development to ensure that recycling issues and the circular economy are addressed from the beginning of product development.

We wrap up the episode with a discussion on the increased number of WorldStar Packaging Awards being won by companies from Australian and New Zealand noting that, for the first time, a local company has won the WPO President's Award for innovation in packaging that supports recycling and reduces waste.

27 Apr 2021How the recycled KitKat wrapper was made, with Jacky Nordsvan from Nestle and Richard Smith from Amcor00:18:55

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, Jacky Nordsvan, head of packaging at Nestle Oceania and Richard Smith, director of sustainability at Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, discuss the groundbreaking effort that went into producing the recycled KitKat wrapper.

The episode starts with a review of the organisations involved in the initiative, why the KitKat product was specifically chosen and how the entire process works. The topics covered range from consumers engaging with flexible plastic recycling through to the production of a food safe, truly circular process for the ongoing production of KitKat wrappers.

The discussion then moves on to review the value of the collaboration between the many organisations involved in the project and the effort required to scale this initiative to cover more products, including the expansion of soft plastic recycle trials nationwide.

We wrap up by noting that this initiative demonstrates there is consumer willingness to invest the effort in recycling flexible plastics while also confirming that innovation requires collaboration across many groups.
