We'll cover 'yes and', 'make the other person look good', 'forward the action', 'be average', and 'dare to fail'.

15 Jun 2024Combining Nature with Architectural Photography with Angie McMonigal00:57:21

In today's episode I am joined by Angie McMonigal, a fine art and commercial architecture photographer based in Chicago. Angie strives to bring a detailed, thoughtful perspective to her work, whether for clients or through the workshops she leads. Having grown up surrounded by nature yet fascinated by the big city she's called home for more than two decades, she brings the meditative calm of her upbringing to a terrain that's always transforming. Drawing from her education in the micro-sciences, including molecular biology, microbiology, and virology, her focus is more frequently on bold architectural details rather than sweeping cityscapes. Our conversation touches on finding inspiration from other art forms to influence and shape your artistic vision, the power of personal projects and series to provide direction and purpose in photography, and how embracing certain creative limitations can force you to find new ways of seeing.

14 Jul 2024Self-Discovery Through Photography with Pamela Sherlock01:12:55

In this episode, I’m joined by Pamela Sherlock in a lively and thought-provoking discussion about curating our own work, representation in photography, stretching ourselves with self-portraiture, and the value of being part of a community of artists as a way to sustain and expand our creative energy.

Pamela is a photographer with a master’s degree in theology. Some of the questions her work asks are: what are our responsibilities to our location? How does the landscape we see daily affect us? How does this landscape inform our sense of identity? With many years in other genres of photography, Pamela has recently begun focusing on abstract nature photography. Her work has been shown nationally and is in several permanent collections. Living on a small farm in rural MN, Pamela spends much of her time outdoors, even while juggling a full-time position as Communications Director.

28 Jul 2024Crafting Stories Through Intentional Camera Movement with Stephanie Johnson 01:24:04

Of the photographers I've followed over the years, Stephanie Johnson has been on the most transformative journey. Our conversation explores the significance of imagination and curiosity in the creative process, using our cameras and post-processing as tools to achieve our vision. My favorite part of this chat was Stephanie sharing her insights on the importance of giving oneself permission to play and expand creative boundaries.

She has a deep passion for creating uniquely distinctive images by working with camera movement to reveal the essence of any given scene, and as a creative photographer, she is always seeking to push the boundaries of her own artistry. She brings an inter-connected, creative, and intuitive approach to her photography-as-art to visually express the essence of light, color, form, line, texture, mood, and emotion through the various in-camera creative techniques of ICM. Stephanie has a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduate work in English Literature and is the Founder, Creator, and Publisher of ICM Photography Magazine (ICMPhotoMag).

30 Sep 2024Things have gotten out of control... 00:14:48

It's interesting that, as someone who appreciates control, I've chosen both a photography approach (abstracts, intentional camera movement) and an artistic medium (alcohol inks) that require a willingness to lose control. Wisdom from Rick Rubin and "The Creative Act" gets us in the frame of mind to loosen our grip and trust the process. Part 2 in a series exploring creativity cross-training.

11 Jan 2025How to Unlock Imagination in Your Photography with Wendy Bagnall 01:07:36

We have a million ways to plan out every aspect of our photography time, but my guest today invites us to leave room for the unexpected and in doing so, to be open to what pulls at our eyes and hearts.

Wendy Bagnall is a photographic artist who lives in England. The natural landscape is the inspiration behind her work, which is an interpretation of what she sees. Wendy’s approach is unrestrictive and often with an abstract quality, augmenting the light, texture and topography of the landscape, creating pieces that aim to evoke an emotional connection with the viewer.

15 Feb 2025What Happens When You Put Yourself Into the Frame? with Sara Kushner01:10:34

Ready for something a bit different that might make you rethink having people - or even yourself - in the frame? I'm joined by Sara Kushner, and we talk about how she got started putting herself in the frame, why her work can't be classified as glorified selfies, and what emotional, logistical, and technical aspects you want to consider if you're thinking about trying out self-portraiture.

Even if you have no interest in putting yourself in front of the camera, you're still going to hear wisdom that will be useful when you are behind the camera.

(PS: I had the delightful experience of meeting Sara at the Winter Women's Photography Conference in Estes Park, Colorado in early February. She's just as charming in person as she is online!)

Episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2upzRyM4fHQ&list=PLaUQ33Eh9FrrOXCUorA4Co5JrOKDbhNZJ&index=1&t=69s

Sara Kushner is an environmental self-portrait photographer on a mission to make life a bit more playful. Through her lens, she celebrates the beauty of self-expression, body acceptance, and authenticity, inviting others to see the world in a new light. Her whimsical, vibrant self-portraits reflect her deep commitment to joy and her appreciation of the natural spaces in which she creates. Sara hopes her work will inspire others to embrace their true selves beyond societal expectations, while appreciating and celebrating the unparalleled beauty found in nature.

01 Mar 2025Capturing Emotion, Not Just Images: The Magic of ICM with Kaisa Siren01:07:19

How does someone go from the strictest of photographic arts – photojournalism – to building a body of work based on one of the most abstract forms of photography there is?

I’m pleased to welcome Kaisa Siren to the conversation. From her home base in the Arctic Circle, Kaisa has explored both far afield and close to home. We chat about how she realized ICM as a way to balance her creative energy, making images with intention, and how ICM helps to make the invisible visible.

Kaisa is a photographic artist and makes her soul landscape visible with Intentional Camera Movement using northern sceneries of Finland as her backdrop. She focuses on themes related to the seasons of Lapland, and the sensitivity of nature. She lives in row·vuh·nee·eh·mee, at the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland, where she works as a freelance photographer. She is widely published in various Finnish magazines and newspapers and has had several solo and group exhibitions in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, New York , Scotland and Germany. She has been a regular contributor to the ICMPhotoMag from its very beginning. She is a co-founder of ICMPhotomag Network Community and ICM Photo Academy, and teaches courses on ICM photography, both in person and on-line, and has been a co-leader of New Beginnings workshops from the start in 2021.
