31 May 2021 | 041 Pharmacist: Nicola Husain | 01:44:28
Today is the start of a special series of episodes where I interview several paediatric pharmacists at the Evelina London Children's Hospital where I am currently employed. I work with an incredibly experienced team of paediatric pharmacists, some of which have been working in paediatrics for 25+ years! I kickstart this series with a super inspiring role model, colleague and friend, Nicola Husain. Nicola is currently employed as an Academic Link Pharmacist which is a split role between Kings College London and the Evelina London Children's Hospital. She is a Senior Paediatric Pharmacist at the hospital with a special interest in Pain Management and Programme Director for Postgraduate Pharmacy Practice at the university. She leads the Paediatric Pharmaceutical Care International Internship Programme as well as the Foundation in Paediatric Pharmaceutical Care International Masterclass which we discuss in detail on the podcast. She is also working closely with the Neonatal and Paedatric Pharmacists Group (NPPG) from an educational perspective. Nicola has built an incredible career pathway for herself with over 10 years of experience in paediatrics in various NHS Trusts across London. In the podcast, she also talks about her passion for travelling to India on several occasions, one of which involved a pharmacy advisory role for the Latika Roy Foundation. She is also a part time pharmacy advisor for CHIVA Africa and King's Sierra Leone Partnership. We didn't have time to talk about these two roles but if you'd like to know more information, please reach out to her. ***Watch this space for more information on the Foundation in Paediatric Pharmaceutical Care International Masterclass*** Social media: Linkedin: Nicola Husain Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter. 02 May 2022 | 061 Sheree-Ann Michelle: Overcoming adversity with a positive attitude and utilising these experiences to help other people transform their lives | 01:46:47
On today's episode I am thrilled to share an inspiring conversation I had with Sheree-Ann Michelle. She is a Pharmacist, a Health & Wellness Coach, and the founder of The Chia Lifestyle. The Chia Lifestyle is a Health and Wellness organisation that helps busy women to prioritise their wellbeing. Sheree-Ann works closely with her clients to build a resevoir of powerful techniques for optimum wellness, increasing energy levels and learning how to maintain a lifetime of healthy habits. She focuses on 5 main areas: Sleep, Hydration, Movement, Nutrition and Mindset. This episode explores Sheree-Ann's pharmacy journey from when she started Pharmacy School in Jamaica. She was faced with several obstacles during this time: - working whilst studying to pay for her degree - failing one exam over one question and needing to re-take her entire school year again - anxiety/panic attacks triggered by all the stress in her life at the time - nearly being abducted on her way from school, and - family separation at home. HOWEVER, despite all of these obstacles, Sheree-Ann believed in herself and utilised this faith to push forward and turn any negative experience into a positive one! Her journey into pharmacy leads her to the UK where she lives today. I admire her ability to step outside of her comfort zone and take risks with absolute faith that things will work out. Majority of her pharmacy career has been spent in the pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative for multiple large companies such as Astra Zeneca and GSK. She talks in depth about the variety of transferrable skills she has developed in these roles and how they have led her to where she is today. 17 Aug 2022 | 069 Amandeep Doll: How to break away from a life that meets other peoples' expectations and develop your own path in life | 01:00:09
On this week's episode I am delighted to introduce Amandeep Doll to the podcast. Aman is the current Head of Professional Belonging at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Great Britain (RPSGB). She also has experience working in hospital pharmacy, education & training in both hospital and university settings, and has worked at a national level for Health Education England (HEE). Her role with HEE was part of the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer’s Clinical Fellow Scheme. This scheme is a unique leadership development opportunity for pharmacists offered through the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM). It is designed to support and develop pharmacists who present with the clearest potential to develop as clinical leaders of the future. Today's episode features a variety of interesting topics: - Growing up in an Asian household, expectations from family members, and how this has impacted her professional career - Moving away from home early in her career which was quite unusual for a girl of Asian heritage and how this gave her freedom and independence to make decisions for herself rather than what was expected of her. - How an unexpected divorce after 2 years of marriage impacted her life and career plans. Aman started a new job at the same time as getting divorced, however, she didn't really deal with her emotional/mental health in that moment. Upon reflection she has a better understanding of her limits and what she can cope with. - How she successfully transitioned from one sector of pharmacy to another and what she learnt from these experiences Social Media: Linkedin: @Amandeep Doll Follow me on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter. 29 Jun 2020 | 005 Pharmacist: Komal George | 01:12:52
Sheer determination is the way to describe Komal George. After achieving an E grade in A-level Chemistry and being told she was unlikely able to go to university, she was determined to prove to herself and people around her that she had what it takes to become a professional! She started her career as a hospital pharmacist which she thoroughly enjoyed and then wanted to experience pharmacy from a primary care perspective and transitioned into community pharmacy for a couple of years. She didn't feel 100% satisfied in that role and landed an excellent opportunity as an Information Pharmacist at the NPA. The skills and knowledge she gained here were vital to her to transition to the Head of Information at the PSNC. She is now the proud owner of her own business, Komal The Holistic Pharmacist, and runs the Positive Pharmacy Space Group on facebook. The Positive Pharmacy Space is a platform to help burnt out Pharmacists take control of their health and lifestyle so that they're ready to fully serve their patients and families with more energy. She considers herself to be a lifelong student in her practice, and loves seeing her clients transform themselves through the course of her programmes. We dive deep into discussion about the positives and negatives of working in a variety of pharmacy environments and understanding where your personality and skills best fit into these different roles. We discuss in depth what skills are learnt in different jobs, what skills you need to have in order to do a particular role, as well as how to get the most of your job using our own personal experiences. Komal provides us with some motivating advice, some of which you can read below: "Keep challenging yourself. Push yourself, your boundaries, and seek new opportunities" "One thing I feel we fall into the trap of is expecting your employer to educate and develop you. You need to develop yourself, because if you don't develop yourself, no-one is going to do it for you. If you are really interested in an area, you need to seek to gain the education you need in that area." "Surround yourself with inspiring people all the time and reach out to them to learn from them" "Keep exploring, keep growing, keep learning. Push past your fears because we all have it" If you have any suggestions for guests you want me to talk or if you’d like to come on yourself, please feel free to contact me via email at info@pharmacistdiaries.com, on Instagram @pharmacistdiariesuk, or on Twitter @PharmDiariesUK
18 Jan 2023 | 081 Tim Ulbrich: Know Your WHY! | 00:53:12
It’s the start of a new year and I am super excited to launch my first episode of 2023 with Tim Ulbrich on the podcast. Tim is the Co-Founder and CEO of Your Financial Pharmacist (YFP), an online platform for education, products, and services designed to help pharmacists achieve financial freedom. Tim’s journey into life as an entrepreneur has been incredibly inspiring for me personally. It was an absolute honour to record this podcast episode with him and I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to get to know each other through the podcast. Tim received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University in 2008 and completed postgraduate residency training at The Ohio State University in 2009. Prior to making the move to work full-time on Your Financial Pharmacist, Tim spent 12 years in various academic positions at Northeast Ohio Medical University and The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. After completing pharmacy school and residency training, Tim and his wife, Jess, had more than $200,000 of non-mortgage debt. Through self-taught financial education and hard work, Tim and Jess finished paying off $200,000 of debt in 2015. Shortly thereafter, Tim published a blog post outlining his debt repayment journey which was the start of Your Financial Pharmacist. Tim is the host of the Your Financial Pharmacist Podcast and co-author of Seven Figure Pharmacist: How to Maximize Your Income, Eliminate Debt and Create Wealth. The podcast is AMAZING and there are currently 290 incredible episodes for you to check out. I am a huge fan of the Debt Free Episode stories that you can filter through the podcast page on the YFP website! I have been tuning into those episodes since 2017 when I was pregnant with Lilyanna and living in Abu Dhabi. I am sure you will feel inspired listening to this episode! 14 Nov 2021 | 052 Preeti Minhas: How improve your consultation skills and achieve better person-centred care | 01:09:49
On today's episode I am having a second discussion with Preeti Minhas on the podcast. Preeti and I had our first conversation back in September 2021, Episode 46. We enjoyed getting to know each other and we were aligned in so many ways that I invited her back onto the podcast for a second time. As we both work in Education & Training, we discuss our opinions on virtual vs face-to-face learning and how we have been moulding our teaching techniques to support our students. We also dive into a deep conversation about consultation skills and person-centred care. As pharmacists, we learn a lot at university about what we need to communicate to patients, however, with the pressures of time constraints, it can be difficult to get that information across to a patient without bombarding them with 20 things to remember about their new medication. In this episode, we provide some really useful advice on HOW to action it in practice. I am sure you will find it useful in your day-to-day practice! As a reminder, Preeti is currently working as the Assistant Director of Clinical Learning for Education for Health. Education for Health is a dynamic healthcare charity, providing education, training and support to a variety of healthcare professionals. A platform that you should all go and check out online as it has lots to offer for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). 11 Feb 2023 | Daily Dose 2: The truth about medication supply issues whilst working in the United Arab Emirates | 00:02:36
Hi friends! Welcome to my new 'daily dose' episodes of the podcast. I will be selecting my favourite sections of previous episodes of the Pharmacists Diaries Podcast. In this clip from Episode 82 of the podcast with Ayodeji Matuluko, you will hear me talking about my experience working in Abu Dhabi and the impact of medication supply issues outside of the UK. Working internationally really helped me to understand how fortunate I am to live and work in the UK where medication supply can be taken from granted in comparison to other countries. 12 Mar 2022 | 059 Harpreet Chana: The power of mindset - turning a negative personal experience into a growing business that supports positive mental health practices for pharmacists | 01:13:50
On today's episode you guys are in for a treat as I welcome the wonderful Harpreet Chana to the podcast. Harpreet is an experienced pharmacist, certified professional coach, self-leadership trainer, international speaker and the founder of the Mental Wealth Academy. I reached out to her as she has experience in two unique roles as a pharmacist which you don't hear about on a regular basis.
However, when we started talking, the conversation flowed in a completely different direction and I decided to enjoy it and live in the present moment. Harpreet is the founder of the Mental Wealth Academy. She created the academy because of her personal experience of battling with years of stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. She didn't tell anyone about her struggles for fear of judgement and recrimination, both personally and professionally. She found little support online for people who were suffering with ill mental health yet were still able to function day to day. Because of this, she wanted to make it her personal mission to eradicate the suffering that arises from negative inner thoughts, or a lack of essential life and leadership skills. These are the skills nobody teaches us at school or university. They are the tools that enable us to be more confident, resilient and in better control of our thoughts, emotions and perceptions. These skills can help to prevent mental health related illness. She also wanted to create more mentally positive and stimulating work environments that encourage openness and honesty around mental health and that promote healthy mental practices, both at home and at work. This episode raises some very common concerns related to working as a pharmacist in the UK. Harpreet provides us with some powerful yet simple tools to use in your day-to-day work life, especially for those moments when you feel overwhelmed with a million tasks and don't know how to say no or can't find the courage to speak up to your employer. I loved her approach to problem solving and turning a negative situation into a positive one. I also found her advice on mindset and negative thoughts really insightful. Please check out her website! I am sure she would be happy to receive emails for advice and support. She has tailored group and 1-2-1 training programmes which focus on confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence and better communication. 29 Feb 2024 | 128 Anisha Patel: A Backstage Pass to How I Built My Pharmacy Career | 00:46:38
In this week's SOLO episode, I take us on an insightful tour of the twists and turns of my pharmacy career. The episode provides an in-depth look at my career journey, sharing insights into the various pharmacy roles I have held and how each experience shaped my interests and passions. If you'd like to visualise my career pathway, I've created a PDF Career Roadmap that you can access, for FREE, right here. I discuss starting my career in hospital pharmacy before moving abroad to the UAE, where I worked in emergency medical services and helped transform their pharmacy operations. This exposed me to new skills like leadership, training, and project management outside of traditional clinical pharmacy. Though rewarding, I felt isolated being the sole pharmacist and missed patient interaction, so I returned to hospital pharmacy. After having a child, my priorities shifted and I moved back to the UK, rebuilding my clinical skills through locum work. I then held roles across paediatrics, palliative care, and academia, finding my love for working with children. Teaching undergraduate pharmacy students helped me to find my true passion and launch the Pharmacist Diaries podcast. However, the demands of my job, a second baby and commute caused burnout. I emphasise the importance of reflection, stepping outside your comfort zone, and finding what brings you joy in your pharmacy career. My pharmacy journey has been one of twists and turns, overcoming obstacles through perseverance, learning on the job, and playing to her strengths. My story provides an inspirational reminder that career paths rarely follow a straight line - unexpected opportunities can lead to discovering your true calling. 08 Sep 2022 | 072 Joanna Kippax: Why sleep is so valuable and how to get more of it! | 00:37:24
On this week's episode I enjoy a conversation with Joanna Kippax as part III of the sleep series. Joanna is a certified sleep practitioner, completing her training at Oxford University, Southampton University and the Children's sleep charity in Sheffield. She trained as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) at The Middlesex Hospital in London in 1986, and as a Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN) at The Westminster Hospital, London in 1989. Most of Joanna's career has been spent working for the NHS in London and Hereford. She is also a member of The British Sleep Society, and a founder member of The British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services (BSPSS). During these years, Joanna has seen the negative impact and frustration that sleep disorders such as insomnia brings to peoples' lives. She utilised this experience and knowledge to branch out from the NHS and develop her own practice called Wye Sleep where she provides specialist sleep health services to individuals and groups. Clients report having more energy, improved mood and concentration and no longer find themselves thinking about sleep during their day, after completing the programme. The tools learned bring about long term, sustainable change, without the use of sleeping medication. Sleep health is an emerging field and Joanna continues to keep up to date with the new research being published, passing this information onto her clients. She is passionate about her work and finds informing and supporting her clients to make alterations that can be life changing, so rewarding. We hear all about her passion for helping people with sleep disorders and she focuses part of our conversation on specific tips for improving your sleep and why these are valuable for you. Examples include: - waking up at the same time of day - expose yourself to morning light - building your sleep drive - wind down routine Joanna is also the founder and director of The Sleep Retreat. This is a two day luxury sleep retreat where you learn how to sleep better using practical tools, feel more energised and refreshed, and enjoy a boutique hotel in the process! 30 Oct 2023 | 111 Yasir Sacranie (Part 5 of 6): Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Victories | 00:30:33
Balancing a full-time career, managing parenting duties, and running this podcast has been a rollercoaster ride of trials and triumphs. I've been lucky to have the unwavering support of my husband, Sunjay Vyas, and it's this love that has helped me juggle it all, a story I share in this episode with my guest, Yasir Sacranie, CEO of MicroPharm. We travel down our individual entrepreneurial journeys, exchanging tales of hurdles we've had to overcome, and the victories that have made it worthwhile. Alongside, we touch upon the significance of scheduling and good nutrition in maintaining high energy levels and overall productivity. The transition to entrepreneurship isn't an overnight process. It takes careful planning, and an unerring focus on time management. In our conversation, Yasir and I delve into this very aspect. Listen in as we discuss the pivotal role of auditing your time, focusing on the small tasks, and investing in specialists to aid in areas outside your expertise. Hear how our strategy of time blocks helped us identify time wastage and replace it with more productive activities. We stress on the importance of pacing yourself and taking things slow and highlighting the necessity of reinvesting the money you make to help your business grow. Creating content driven by passion and community sentiment is the cherry on top of the entrepreneurial journey. I talk about how the podcast reached 10,000 downloads across 100+ countries in its first year, a milestone that has fuelled my drive to keep creating. The joy of sharing knowledge and the satisfaction derived from inspiring, motivating, and educating listeners have been a significant motivator. 15 Jan 2024 | 120 Gina Bariah: From Hospital to Big Pharma (Part I) | 00:26:05
In this inaugural episode of our new three-part series, we dive into the world of pharmacy careers within the pharmaceutical industry. We are joined by special guest Gina Bariah, a dynamic and intuitive industry leader with extensive experience spanning numerous therapy areas at country, regional, and global levels within medical affairs. Gina's pharmacy training at Aston University and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, provided diverse experiences but made her realise that the conventional career path in hospital pharmacy might not align with her long-term ambitions. Feeling limited by the rigid career ladder in hospital pharmacy, Gina explored unconventional career avenues, including contemplating roles in banking, relocating, and even considering a career in the army. Her quest led her to a profound realisation—there's an entire world of career opportunities within the pharmaceutical industry that extend beyond the confines of what she'd encountered in hospital settings. Through independent research, Gina uncovered a multitude of roles spanning medical affairs, marketing, regulatory affairs, and more, a revelation that highlighted the information gap surrounding industry careers for pharmacists. Transitioning from hospital to industry roles wasn't without obstacles. Gina faced rejection due to a lack of direct industry experience. Overcoming these hurdles required perseverance and a strategic approach. Networking emerged as a crucial element in her journey, ultimately leading her to secure her breakthrough role at Pfizer, marking her entry into the pharmaceutical realm. Motivated by her challenges, Gina established PharmAffinity, a platform designed to assist pharmacists in transitioning into pharmaceutical careers. The platform offers an array of resources, networking events, and mentorship opportunities, aimed at bridging the gap between hospital pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry. Stay tuned for part two, where Gina will delve into the essential skills necessary for success in the pharmaceutical industry. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! 22 Feb 2022 | 058 Nicola Vosser: How one pharmacist has dedicated the last decade to developing and strengthening digital solutions to optimise patient care | 01:38:49
I have been really looking forward to getting this episode uploaded for you guys to listen to! Today's epsiode features the wonderful Nicola Vosser! Nicola is Chealsea and Westminster's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust's ePMA Lead Directorate Pharmacist and the first pharmacist on the podcast with a full-time IT related pharmacy role. She has lead a team to implement ePMA (Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration) across two hospitals sites, sharing the Cerner domain and drug catalogue with Imperial College Hospital Trust (ICHT). Though an exciting experience to be part of, it raises a whole set of challenges and problem solving skills in her day-to-day work life. We spend time sharing the "thrills" of project management in the world of pharmacy IT and the satisfaction you get when systems, processes, and daily life for healthcare professionals using the system become so much more efficient and user-friendly. Prior to working as an ePMA pharmacist, she was a passionate Women's and Children's Pharmacist and Resident Pharmacist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She loved her clinical role and was intrigued about the idea of implementing those skills into a IT related role and decided to take on a secondment for a year to try it out! She clearly loved the job and what it had to offer and hasn't looked back ever since. Social Media: Linkedin: @Nicola Vosser Follow me on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter. 26 Apr 2021 | 038 American Pharmacist: Dr Carlene Link | 00:46:34
On today's episode I am delighted to introduce Dr. Carlene Link to the podcast. Carlene completed her undergraduate Bachelor's degree at Ohio's John Carroll University in 2004, received her PharmD from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 2008 and then completed her PGY-1 residency at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, Ohio. For the first 5 years of her career, she worked as an Internal Medicine clinical specialist and was very passionate about primary care. During this time became a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist (BCPS). She then left direct patient care and moved into the business sector, working for an international drug information company for a further five years. She is currently a part time clinical pharmacist who works in the inpatient setting for a Level 1 Trauma hospital. Today's episode focuses on working women! We dive deep about our personal journeys as female healthcare professionals, the perception of women and mothers in leadership, and working women with families! We share our thoughts about how we strive to be just as good in our jobs as we are as wives and mothers. We talk about the need to allow women more flexible roles in the workplace and how this aspect of pharmacy is (or isn't) evolving in the UK and the USA. This episode promotes the need to change self judgement that devoids us of happiness, feeling worthless and not belonging. It is defintely worth a listen! 24 Feb 2025 | 174 Hikmat Kazeem: 3 Ways You Can Turn Setbacks into Success As A Pharmacy Student | 00:33:29
In Episode 3 of The Untold Stories of Pharmacy Students, we meet third-year student, Hikmat Kazeem, who's rewriting what success looks like in pharmacy education. Like many pharmacy students, Hikmat's path wasn't straightforward. After COVID-era predicted grades affected her medical school applications, she reluctantly considered pharmacy - despite a less-than-inspiring work experience placement that involved nothing but shelf cleaning. Today, she's BPSA's Western Area Coordinator and proving that sometimes the most challenging beginnings lead to the most inspiring journeys. This episode dives deep into the realities of pharmacy student life. Hikmat openly shares her experience with first-year exam failure, describing the raw emotions of staying in bed for three days and questioning her place in pharmacy. But it's what she did next that makes her story powerful - transforming that setback into motivation to ace her remaining seven exams. Beyond academics, Hikmat's story is a masterclass in building a balanced student life. As the only hijabi player on her university netball team, she's breaking barriers and showing how sports can be crucial for mental health during intense study periods. Her adventures extend globally - from a marketing internship in Hong Kong to upcoming medical volunteering in India - proving that pharmacy education can be a launch pad for diverse experiences. What sets this episode apart is Hikmat's refreshing perspective on the future. While many students feel pressured to have their entire career mapped out, she advocates for living in the present and exploring widely - whether that's earning a British Sign Language qualification or seeking international opportunities. Her message is clear: your pharmacy journey doesn't need to fit a traditional mould. Edwin Panford-Quainoo is a passionate, positive, and highly accomplished professional with over 20 years of pharmacy experience in a variety of settings and countries. He started his career as a community pharmacist at Boots and thoroughly enjoyed his experience in a primary care setting. After approximately 10 years of working in community pharmacy, Edwin took a career break from Boots for 2 years. He loved the idea of community pharmacy in the wider context of public health and pursued his Masters in Public Health at the University of Liverpool before starting his current PhD in Global Health. 13 Jul 2020 | 007 Pharmacist: Laura Buckley | 00:47:36
In this week’s episode, we are joined by Laura Buckley. She is passionate Primary Care Network (PCN) Pharmacist, creator of the Mum Does Drug blog, wife, mother of two boys, occasional writer for C+D and now the author of her first international selling novel, Love, Prescribed. The book is available on Amazon as a Kindle edition or paperback book. In her first month of sales, her book was purchased in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and Malaysia! In this conversation we hear a love story; a fairytale pharmacy life which I don’t think Laura even realises! I am inspired as a healthcare professional, a mother, and as a wife. Though Laura was very aware of her creative side at a young age, she decided to pursue a career in a science related field knowing that it would provide her security for her future. Her love story begins when she tells us about how she met her husband, who is also a pharmacist. She had her first child just before her 3rd year pharmacy school exams and her second child during her hospital based pre-registration year. She sat her pre-reg exam pregnant! I still can’t believe this! Shortly after qualifying, she co-manages a pharmacy with her husband whilst juggling parenting two young children. After a few years of this she felt she wanted to make more of a difference to patient lives from a clinical perspective and a role in pharmacy management was pulling her away from that. This is part of the reason for her transition to a PCN Pharmacist role and the job was exactly what she was looking for! Consultations allow Laura to put patients' own decision making more into the conversation. She provides them with information and tries to understand exactly what they want to get out of their care. I loved hearing Laura's perspective on how to deliver good patient care and her attitude towards growing within her role as a pharmacist is inspiring. 29 Sep 2022 | 074 Netta Tyler: How international work experience in Bermunda opens your eyes to the different ways of practicing pharmacy | 00:54:53
On today's episode I am thrilled to share an inspiring conversation I had with Netta Tyler. Netta and I met in 2009 when I was working as a pre-registration pharmacist at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She has been a loyal employee of the hospital for nearly two decades and has dedicated most of her career to the world of antimicorbials! In the last 4 years, her role has expanded where she spends part of her time working as a Specialist Antifungal Pharmacist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our conversation begins at the start of Netta's career where she decides to go on an adventure to Bermuda to work as a pharmacist. We share stories of the ups and downs of expat life. I enjoyed this discussion because we share similar opinions on international work experience and how these opportunities open our eyes to the different ways of practicing pharmacy compared to the traditional career pathways in the UK. During her time in Bermuda, Netta was also the President of the Bermunda Pharmaceutical Association. Upon returning to the UK, Netta moved to Cambridgeshire and quickly found herself a pharmacy role at Royal Papworth Hospital. She transitions into a Specialist Antimicrobial Pharmacist role and she shares how this job has developed over time and how the antimicrobial team is slowly expanding with new and exciting opportunities for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. It was great to re-connect with Netta after 10 years...one of the many reasons I love having this podcast! Linkedin: @Netta Tyler Follow me on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter. 16 Oct 2022 | 075 Shilpa Patel: Making the move from Community Pharmacy to a GP Practice Role has transformed my career | 00:49:23
On today's episode I am thrilled to feature Shilpa Patel on the podcast. Shilpa has spent most of her career in as a Community Pharmacist. After well over a decade of endless hours of hard work and feeling under valued and frustrated within her role, she walked out of the pharmacy on her lunch break and never looked back! She wanted to take a break from pharmacy and decided to travel to India for a few months to think about her next steps and enjoy a much needed break. Before she left for her travels, she applied for a GP Practice Role alongside 400 other candidates. There were only 4 positions available and she was doubtful that she'd be offered the position. In her mind, she thought that hospital pharmacists would be more likely to get offered the position as their clinical knowledge was far superior to a community pharmacist. Boy was she wrong! She was offered the job and later realised that community pharmacists are extremely valuable assets to a GP Practice and their skillset, knowledge and experience are perfect for these roles. She now has over 6 years of experience as a GP Practice Pharmacist and has hired multiple pharmacists to join her team. She has utilised a variety of transferrable skills from her community pharmacy experience and has also learnt and utilised several new skills along the way. She has achieved an incredible amount in a short space of time and her attitude and enthusiasm to developing pharmacists in this relatively new area of practice is inspriring. She is now the Lead GP Prescribing Pharmacist Partner at WellBN. She is also a DPP & Mentor, Covid vaccination service lead, Digital Marketing lead, Practice Merger Lead, and Benzodiazepine Detox Specialist. It was an honour to have a conversation with her. I hope you all enjoy it! Linkedin: @Shilpa Patel Follow me on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter. From our conversation, it is clear that she thoroughly enjoyed her role in primary care as was passion ate about leading a team of healthcare professionals. During her time with Boots, she came across a role involved with learning and development which she knew was a unique opportunity to view pharmacy from a different pair of eyes.
This role led onto several other interesting opportunities in her career, one of which is her involvement with Education for Health. Education for Health is a dynamic healthcare charity, providing education, training and support to a variety of healthcare professionals. Preeti initially joined the organisation as Head of Respiratory and Market Intelligence and is now the Assistant Director of Clinical Learning.

25 Oct 2022 | 076 Stephanie Tyler: Follow your passion and you could find yourself in a role no one else is doing! | 01:47:37
I am incredibly excited to launch this week’s episode! I am thrilled to introduce Stephanie Tyler to the podcast. She is a highly specialist pharmacist in HIV, Sexual and Reproductive Health, currently working at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in a very exciting and innovative role related to HIV PrEP implementation and Sexual Health. She has experience working at a national level with the HIV Pharmacy Association (HIVPA) as the regional representative for London and the Patient Information Lead. She is extremely passionate about her role and her curiosity to improve patient care through research and publication is truly inspiring.
Our conversation covered a variety of topics:
- An in depth discussion about why she chose certain hospitals and locations and the advantages and disadvantages of a large teaching hospital vs smaller district general hospital.
- How she found this specialist area and what she loves about it
- How to make your job rewarding
- The challenges around talking to patients in such a sensitive specialist area and tactics she uses to ensure patients have a positive experience.
- Service improvement and why we both adore this aspect of pharmacy
- How she manages her time to achieve as much as she has! One example being how she managed to complete 6 posters and 1 oral presentation in one year!
- Transiting from a band 6 pharmacist up to a band 8 and how these roles have differed
There is so much more to this conversation than what I’ve stated above. I cannot wait for you to watch/listen!

Shilpa has cultivated a deep understanding of general practice by leading and mentoring a team of ten pharmacists, effectively guiding them to excel in their roles. She has evolved into a valued leader and is able to identify strengths and weaknesses in staff, colleagues and processes which enables her to deliver clinical services efficiently and effectively.
In the beginning of this episode, Shilpa shares her inspiring journey of leaving a toxic work environment in community pharmacy to finding fulfillment and purpose in her role as a GP practice pharmacist. 10 Mar 2025 | 175 Craig Ndip: How to Overcome Depression and Find Your Purpose as a Pharmacy Student | 00:45:54
From the sun-soaked hills of Tuscany to the halls of British pharmacy education, this week's episode features Craig Ndip. Craig Ndip is the Vice President of the British Pharmaceutical Students' Association (BPSA) and a fourth-year pharmacy student. He grew up in the beautiful hills of Tuscany, Italy, where he developed a love for food and landscapes. After moving to the UK as a teenager without knowing English, Craig overcame significant challenges to pursue his education. Alongside his academic pursuits, he found immense fulfillment in helping others through volunteering as a first aider, which sparked his passion for healthcare. Craig is working hard to learn everything he can about patient care, with the goal of becoming an exceptional healthcare professional who can make a difference in his community. Craig shares his remarkable journey of moving from Italy to the UK at age 16, overcoming language barriers, depression, and imposter syndrome to become a leader in pharmacy education. This isn't just a story about moving countries—it's about building a new family within pharmacy, turning strangers into lifelong friends, and discovering that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is start over. 04 Jul 2022 | 067 Christina Fontana: A powerful story of a woman whose purpose and mission is to uplift, empower, and inspire pharmacists to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams | 00:46:31
On today's episode I am pleased to introduce Christina Fontana to the podcast. Christina is a pharmacist, author, transformation coach, hypnotherapist and podcaster. From the ages of 18 to 25, she suffered with a rare eating disorder called Night Eating Syndrome. She also experienced debilitating anxiety, low self-esteem, and felt isolated from her family. She made decisions about her career that her family didn't agree with and this led to her being kicked out of her home and was homeless for 2 weeks. Her life was chaotic and unmanageable and she felt like she had hit her rock bottom. These struggles started during her pharmacy degree and heightened at the beginning of her career as a pharmacist and completing her residency. Christina indicates that traditional medicine never appealed to her and she began studying and experiencing various modalities of healing. She managed to turn her life around and began utilising this experience and all the skills she learned along the way to build the business she has today. Christina's mission is to uplift, empower, and inspire young women to pursue their entrepreneurial dream. She volunteers to speak with pharmacy schools and also provides two scholarships per year to students at St. John's University to support the development of the next generation of pharmacist entrepreneurs. Today's episode is focused on our personal experiences with team meetings. Tara provides us with some insight on what tactics have worked within her team to have productive meetings with engagement from all her staff. Today's episode is all about goal setting! Tara and I discussed our personal processes for setting goals as individuals, professionals and members of a family. **Please accept my sincere apologies when you watch the video version of this podcast. Part way through the recording, we faced an issue with one of the cameras and Meeta's video cuts out so you are only able to see my video and hear the all the audio. The content of the podcast is absolutely inspiring so please take the time to listen to the content as it is truly worth it*** On today’s episode I am excited to welcome Meeta Patel to the podcast. Meeta is a Senior Manager and Specialist Pharmacist in Theatres, Critical Care and Pain Management at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). A role she is thoroughly passionate about and one that resonates with her personally due to a trauma she experienced at the start of her career as a pharmacist. She shares a very personal story of an injury that led to debilitating pain, lack of movement, and a huge setback in career progression. What is so wonderful and powerful about this story is Meeta's determination to improve her quality of life and return to her previous way of living. What she doesn't realise at the time is how this journey enables her to shift her career pathway as a pharmacist and open her mindset to alternative therapies AND developing a role as an entrepreneur! Meeta walks us through her healing journey and how she had to look outside of traditional medicine and try alternative therapies. She utlises several forms of therapy but she felt a strong connection to Reiki and decided to become a Reiki master. This then leads to the development of Infinity Aromatiqs and creating natural and homemade products such as candles, roll on oils and wax melts. 21 Feb 2021 | 029 Pharmacist: Tanya Aubeeluck | 00:52:02
On today's episode I am pleased to introduce an enthusiastic and focused clinical pharmacist, Tanya Aubeeluck. Tanya is a firm believer of a professional 5-year plan and the belief that life has a way of showing you different paths. She started out as a community pharmacist but behind the scenes she was developing her goals in order to navigate into a clinic based or General Practice based career pathway. Part of this transformational process involved undertaking a management role in community pharmacy to assess her skillset in leadership which she thoroughly enjoyed. During this role, she stumbled across an opportunity to design a bespoke service for a neuro-rehabilitation centre. This involved reviewing medication related policies, undertaking audits, cost saving interventions, and going on ward rounds weekly with the medical team. This project sparked some excitement for Tanya and she made a courageous leap to quit her job and apply for a GP Pratice role where she felt her skills and experience would be well suited. After an interesting "speed dating" interview process, she was offered a job and hasn't looked back! She completed her Practice Certificate in Independent Prescribing at the University of Reading in 2017. She has always been passionate about diabetes and wanted to work towards this speciality so she decided to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes at the University of South Wales, which she passed and finished this week! She is also a registered as an Royal Pharmaceutical Society Mentor so please reach out to her if you need support. 16 Feb 2023 | 084 Sandeep Kapur: How mindfulness can positively change your mental wellbeing forever | 01:28:26
On today’s episode, I am excited to share a conversation with a clinical pharmacist with one powerful goal in mind: to make a proactive change for the mental wellbeing of the younger generation. Sandeep Kapur a clinical pharmacist currently working for an organisation called Health & Beyond. As a pharmacist, Sandeep works across several GP practices providing support to patients through structured medication reviews and has special interest in Mental Health. She also has experience in a hospital outpatient pharmacy and several years of working as a community pharmacist. She is a highly motivated professional and her transition through a variety of roles within pharmacy practice has allowed her to gain a range of skills and develop her knowledge at a fast pace. We discuss her career in detail at the beginning of the podcast episode, but as we dive deep into our conversation, she shares her story behind living with anxiety and the coping mechanisms she uses to manage this condition. This experience, as well as working in GP practices for over 14 years and seeing the rise in mental health disorders, encouraged her to think outside the box. She felt so passionate about making a change for the younger generation that she created a mindfulness diary for children. She believes the diary will change the way in which we speak to our children and the way in which we encourage our children to understand and speak about their emotions. Sandeep encourages parents to complete elements of the diary as a family. She is confident that parents will benefit from this reflective process and demonstrate to children that everyone has emotional ups and downs in life. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Sandeep. I am truly inspired by her passion and drive to utilise her creativity to help others believe that growth is a lifelong journey and that mindset and mindulness can improve your life forever. 05 May 2021 | 039 American Pharmacist: Dr Alex Barker | 00:47:16
On today's episode I am delighted to introduce Alex Barker to the podcast. Alex is the author of a recently published book, Indispensable: The Prescription for a Fulfilling Pharmacy Career and the founder of The Happy PharmD. Alex created The Happy PharmD business as he is passionate about helping pharmacists create inspiring lives and careers; specifically by turning passions and strengths into businesses or new careers! You'll identify from the podcast that Alex hasn't always been a happy pharmacist. He felt like he had joined the wrong profession that did not satisfy his creative desires. He found himself miserable and desparately wanting change. He experienced a prolonged journey of figuring out who he was and accepting that. He understood it was necessary to lean into it rather than trying to pretend to be something he wasn't... Since creating the Happy PharmD Platform, he has coached over 700 pharmacists to change their career pathways and start businesses that create more freedom and income. 24 Aug 2021 | 045 French Pharmacist: Laily Sadozai | 01:11:46
On today's episode, I am pleased to introduce our first French pharmacist on the podcast, Laily Sadozai! Laily and I met at Evelina London Children's Hospital during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic whilst she was completing her 6-month internship with the Pharmacy Department and Paediatric Infectious Diseases Team. She was an absolute pleasure to work with and during her time with us, she kindly gave us a presentation about life as a pharmacist in France. It was truly eye-opening and I was so surprised to hear how different the career pathway is in a neighbouring country just across the English Channel. Today's episode focuses on the journey of a French Pharmacist as well as her own passions with hospital pharmacy and more specifically, infectious diseases. 08 Jun 2021 | 042 Pharmacist: Francine De Stoppelaar | 01:09:40
On today's episode, I am absolutely delighted to introduce the current Director of Pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic London to the podcast, Francine De Stoppelaar. Francine and I met back in 2018 when I first returned to London from Abu Dhabi. She had recently started her post at that time and was in the initial stages of developing and setting up the pharmacy services for the hospital. There is something really special about working with a start-up team and building something from the ground up! Since then, Cleveland Clinic London has been working tirelessly to set up the hospital as well as overcoming the challenges associated with Brexit and COVID-19. They are set to open the outpatient clinic on Portland Place in September 2021 and the Hospital on Grosvenor Place in January 2022.
Francine is an experienced healthcare leader with an extensive track record in Clinical and Pharmacy Operations, Quality and Patient Safety, Capital Builds and Entrepreneurship. Our conversation highlights her ability to thrive when faced with new challenges and experiences. She is definitely brave, she thinks outside the box, and enjoys an adventure in her professional career!
I was recently employed by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and my fondest memory of working there was the culture that the organisation fostered where you felt like you were working with family. I also loved the fact that they prioritised your health and wellbeing as they know and believe that looking after yourself first will ensure you can look after your patients. This "patient-first" culture was a huge priority and an element of their brand they are very proud of.

10 Sep 2021 | 047 Pharmacist: Maiya Ahmed | 00:59:43
On today's episode I had the pleasure of interviewing a dear friend and fellow mum, Maiya Ahmed. I was really looking forward to recording this episode because Maiya has nearly 2 decades of experience in paediatrics alone! I’m in complete awe of her dedication to paediatrics and child health, and the wealth of knowledge she has gained in a specialist area of pharmacy when my journey has only just begun! Maiya knew she wanted to work with children when she was an undergraduate student. She qualified as a pharmacist and started her career as a resident pharmacist at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She has experience in a wide variety of areas (Neurology, Neonates, Parenteral Nutrition, and Infectious Diseases to name a few) and is a non-medical independent prescriber in parenteral nutrition. I also learnt about her passion for supporting developing countries to build and develop clinical services within pharmacy. In 2008, she took time out from her career to complete her MSc in International Maternal and Child Health with University College London (UCL) and then volunteered for over a year at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya! What an amazing experience! Maiya and I met in 2018 when we joined Evelina London Children’s Hospital, both covering Maternity Leave contracts. I remember the day so clearly when she told me she was pregnant and having her first child. An exciting moment in our new friendship and how life has changed for her since she’s become a mother. We spend some time sharing our experiences of becoming parents and acheving our professional dreams. Another exciting episode with lots of insight on how to live a fulfilled and inspiring pharmacy career. So proud of you Maiya! 29 Jan 2023 | 082 Ayodeji Matuluko: Never stop learning and growing | 00:49:46
On today’s episode, I am thrilled to introduce Ayodeji Matuluko to the podcast. Ayodeji started her journey into pharmacy at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. To date, she has 10 years of broad experience in community and hospital pharmacy, public health, medical communications and global health research. During our conversation, we hear about her passion for learning and how the courses she has embarked on have opened doors and enhanced her opportunities within this profession. - She graduated from Univeristy of Lagos, Nigeria, in 2012 with a BPharm - She then completed an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy, International Practice and Policy at University College London (UCL) in 2016 - She then started fellowship training with West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists but realised that this course didn’t quite align with what she wanted to achieve so instead embarked on a PhD instead - Her Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) in Feasibility and Acceptability of an Intervention(s) to Enhance Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals will hopefully be completed in June 2023 Our conversation focuses a lot of time on her motivation to become a better person and a better professional. Her experience to date indicates how determined she is to learn and how much she enjoys taking this knowledge and applying into practice in her roles as a pharmacist. Her passion for education aligns with her long-term vision to be part of the growth of clinical pharmacy and the development of pharmacy-led services in Nigeria where these are not well developed. We also spent a lot of time discussing the value of increasing your network and how this has led to so many incredible opportunities and evolved her interests within the profession. Some of these opportunities/highlights include: - Joining the LiveWell Initiative (LWI) as a postgraduate intern/academy officer. She picked up important skills, quickly learnt how to work and collaborate with people from different disciplines and was recognised as the best intern that year - Serving within the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Young Pharmacist Group and leading the publication of a first-of-its-kind “Career development toolkit for early career pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists” in 2020. She was also selected by McKinsey & Company as a Next Generation Women Leader for 2021 - Being selected as an an FIPWise Rising Star in 2022. A programme that recognises women in pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy education for their progress and achievements to support others; those who are pathfinders in their fields, who are rising in their careers and who deserve to be recognised. 20 Jul 2020 | 008 Special Episode: Anisha Patel and Sunjay Vyas | 00:49:24
In this special episode of Pharmacist Diaries I joined my husband on his podcast, The Stay Whole Podcast. We talk about how as a family we have upped our game in terms of creating helpful and healthy lifestyle habits, like waking up at 4.30 am every weekday to make time for exercise, relaxation and some time for ourselves. We have been amazed at what a few weeks of consistently doing something can do for our mind and body, and how much focus and direction it has brought into our lives. We put our new found way of life down to the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. More surprisingly neither of us have finished reading the book! Yet the changes we have made have been profound. We talk in depth about some of these changes and how our a simple mindset shift has brought new focus and energy into our lives. I discuss the future for this podcast which has evolved at a rapid pace. Finally we have a little announcement that we share for the first time in the episode (and no, it's not what you are thinking!). 01 Sep 2022 | 071 Gareth Evans: The importance and value of developing enhanced services in community pharmacies to improve patient health | 00:53:03
On this week's episode, I am excited to launch Part II of the sleep series and introduce Gareth Evans to the podcast. Gareth is a dedicated and passionate pharmacist who genuinely values helping his community through accessible enhanced services that aim to improve patient health. He graduated from the University of Bradford in 1998. He completed the 5-year MPharm Course which still exists today. This course enables you to undertake your pre-registration training as part of the programme where students leave university as a qualified pharmacist pending successful completion of the GPhC registration exam. Gareth owned his first community pharmacy in 2002, less than 5 years after qualifying as a pharmacist. He set up a consultation room and initiated blood glucose testing and blood pressure monitoring which was relatively new at the time. Weight loss and weight management became part of the services Gareth provided and this was the start of his passion to combat the obesity epidemic. This passion inspired him to set up his own organisation called Waistaway. Waistaway is a complete weight loss and weight management programme that aims to help combat the obesity crisis by combining high quality products and professional, one to one support. They offer a range of weight loss and weight management solutions designed around the individual's requirements. From basic weight check and advice, portion control, partial food replacement, all the way up to total food replacement using the Lipotrim pharmacy programme. Gareth has provided this service for over 16 years and has collected data for over 1800 patients which is a phenomenal achievement! He has successfully published the data and results which is linked below. Adrian Zacher (see podcast episode 70) contacted Gareth via LinkedIn and sparked his interest in improving sleep disorder services within community pharmacies and supporting pharmacists to be better educated to help their own communities. Through this connection and his curiosity to enhance what services can be provided by community pharmacists, Gareth got involved with setting up the British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services (BSPSS) and became President of the charity.
