03 Nov 2021BREAKING ICE & BREAKING GLASS | VICE ADMIRAL SANDY STOSZ | EPISODE 19000:50:56

Today, our nation is like a ship being tossed in tumultuous seas. The winds and waves of change have divided and distanced our society, threatening to wash away the very principles our nation was founded upon. Now more than ever, our nation needs leaders with the moral courage to stand strong and steady—leaders capable of uniting people in support of a shared purpose by building the trust and respect necessary for organizations and their people to thrive.

Admiral Sandy Stosz started out in the US Coast Guard as an ensign serving aboard polar icebreakers, conducting national security missions from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Her forty-year career was filled with leadership lessons gleaned while breaking ice and breaking glass as the first woman to command an icebreaker on the Great Lakes and to lead a US armed forces service academy. Along the way, Sandy served for 12 years at sea, commanding two ships, and led large Coast Guard organizations during times of crisis and complexity. She finished her career as the first woman assigned as Deputy Commandant for Mission Support, directing one of the Coast Guard’s largest enterprises. She has lectured widely on leadership, and has been featured on CSPAN and other media outlets. In 2012, Newsweek’s “The Daily Beast” named Sandy to their list of 150 Women who Shake the World.

Topics

During this interview Sandy and I discuss the following topics:

  • What brought her to become a leader in the US Coast Guard
  • How she broke out her shell and develop her leadership skills
  • Some of her leadership challenges that she overcame in her career
  • The great leadership success of her career
  • Her thoughts on how to build cohesive teams
  • Her advice for women leaders out there

14 Apr 2021The Art of Caring Leadership | Heather Younger | Episode 16300:35:53

People will go the extra mile for leaders who show they are genuinely concerned not only with what employees can do, but also with who they are and can become. If your people know you care about them, they will move mountains. Therefore, as

Heather R. Younger is an experienced keynote speaker, two-time author, and the CEO and Founder of Employee Fanatix, a leading employee engagement, leadership development, and DEI consulting firm, where she is on a mission to help leaders understand the power they possess to ensure people feel valued at work.

Known as The Employee WhispererTM, Heather harnesses humor, warmth, and an instant relatability to engage and uplift audiences and inspire them into action.

Rooted in her belief that employees aren’t just numbers on the payroll but human beings with ideas that matter, Heather’s talks and workshops are dedicated to helping teams, leaders, and organizations shine by improving how they listen to, communicate with, and empower employees.

Heather’s personal Why emerged as she sought to find meaning from her difficult experience growing up in the 1970s. As the only child of an interfaith and interracial marriage, both Heather and her Black father were shunned and excluded by extended family because of the color of their skin. While the sting of exclusion left Heather with a lot of questions growing up, it also led her to develop a high level of resilience and a deeply inspired commitment to advocate for anyone who has ever felt devalued.

Today, she credits her capacity to navigate complex social dynamics and discuss identity in the workplace to those early experiences, and is dedicated to creating opportunities for organizational leaders, teams, and individuals to learn strategies for reframing adversity while empowering leaders to change their workplaces for the better.

Topics

During this interview Heather and I discuss the following topics:

  • What it means to be a caring leader

28 Sep 2023The Transformation Journey: Key Insights for Leaders | Adam Bennett | Episode 27400:35:23

Welcome back to another episode of Peak Performance Leadership! In today's episode, we have a special guest, Adam Bennett, who will be sharing his insights on effective leadership and strategy implementation. Adam is an experienced leader with a wealth of knowledge in leading organizations through transformative change.

During our conversation, Adam touches on the common pitfalls of relying on lengthy PowerPoint presentations to communicate a strategy. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of distilling a strategy down to its core essence, able to be communicated in just a couple of sentences. Clear and concise articulation of the strategy, including the reasons behind it and the actions to be taken, is crucial for effective implementation.

Building the right team is a key aspect of successful leadership, according to Adam. He highlights the importance of finding individuals with the right temperament and skills, while also being aware of potential obstacles to change. Drawing a comparison to sailing a ship, Adam identifies five mechanics for implementing change, which serve as a checklist to steer organizations towards successful transformation.

As we delve deeper into the conversation, the debate surrounding the time and effort devoted to a change program versus running the business as usual is brought to the forefront. Adam emphasizes that transformation requires a combination of disruption, corporate strategy development, and action implementation. Disruption can stem from external factors that impact an organization, prompting the need for a robust corporate strategy to address these forces. However, without effective action and implementation, even the most well-crafted strategy holds no value.

Overcoming resistance to change is a significant challenge in corporate environments, and Adam hones in on the role of different personality types in hindering progress. From the loser who fears losing power to the rationalist who prioritizes their own scorecard over the larger strategy, identifying and managing these personalities is crucial in driving successful transformation.

Throughout the episode, we also explore the importance of mindset in effective strategy development. Adam highlights traits such as humility and curiosity as essential for leaders, emphasizing the dangers of entering a transformation process with a mindset of knowing everything. Instead, he encourages adopting a shoshin mentality, or a "beginner's mind," remaining open to learning and adapting in the face of rapid change.

As we wrap up our conversation, Adam underlines the criticality of making hard choices and prioritizing for organizational success. No organization can do everything, and he stresses the need for focused decision-making and effective communication of those choices. Additionally, Adam sheds light on the challenge of aligning priorities with resource allocation and provides insights into tracking and monitoring progress.

Join us in this episode as we gain valuable insights from Adam Bennett on leadership, strategy implementation, and the critical importance of mindset in driving successful transformation. So grab your earbuds, sit back, and let's dive right in to explore how to achieve peak performance in leadership!

Timestamped Overview

  • 00:00:50 Transformation involves disruption, strategy, and action.
  • 00:05:11 Resistance to change due to corporate personalities.

09 Feb 2022Be the Influencer in your Team | Brian Smith | Episode 20500:46:41

Reports of scandals continue to rock both public and private sectors. Nearly one in four employees report witnessing unethical behavior in their workplace. Such actions leave long-lasting impressions internally across the organization and externally across the public at large — damaging not only any influence the bad actors have, but — often unwittingly — that of their teams. It’s time to rethink the adage “there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’.” Actually, the “I” represents influence, which all team members must embrace if they want their team to excel. Some would go so far as to say that influence is the most important facet of one’s personal and professional life. The influence even small actions have will create a ripple effect. Knowing this, we become more consciously aware of the influence we wish to project, which helps us to become the best version of ourselves and, by association, leads to the success of our teams.

Brian began his career as an accountant but did not enjoy public accounting. After a short term at a big 6 accounting firm, he started Business Accounting Solutions in 1988, which he later sold to Cornerstone Consulting Group. Recognizing the need many small businesses had for sound management advice, Brian went on to start Individual Advantages, LLC, which was later rebranded DBA IA Business Advisors in 2015, as a think tank to develop customized, yet affordable, management solutions driven by our focus on people, process, and technology.

Since 1988, Brian has helped over 18,000 business owners and managers on all seven continents (yes, Antarctica, too). Coming from companies of all sizes, he has helped them make decisions to help them grow personally and as an organization. He has a PhD in organizational psychology, a master’s degree in management information systems, a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and is a certified Six Sigma master black belt consultant.

 Topics

During this interview Brian and I discuss the following topics:

  • Why he went to Antarticia
  • WHy leaders should be the “I” in the team
  • Why being influential as a leader is important
  • Why SMART Goals are not the end all
  • Why understanding your role is crucial
  • Delegate like a pro
  • Why knowing your people is important to avoiding failures
  • Strategies to find time to be better prepared as a leader
  • Tactics to influence culture change in an organization
  • How leaders can can slow down

15 Jun 2023Compassionate Accountability in Action: Transforming Team Dynamics and Achieving Success | Nate Regier | Episode 26500:41:47

According to DDI’s 2023 global leadership forecast, the top skills of leaders who boost engagement, retain great employees and create cultures that thrive is interpersonal communication skills. When it comes to interpersonal communication skills, one of the most common questions we get asked is, “How do you balance kindness, care and concern with attention to outcomes?” Everyone struggles with this tension. Dr. Regier is a former practicing psychologist and expert in social-emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication, conflict skills, and

08 Feb 2024Purpose Over Profit: The Art of Leading With Significance | Joey Havens | Episode 28600:36:24

In the ever-evolving landscape of business and management, the paradigm of leadership constantly seeks new horizons, with an emerging focus on leading with significance. At the heart of this approach lies the transformative idea that true leadership is not about amassing personal success, but rather about placing the well-being of others at the forefront. The call for leaders to prioritize serving their teams, fostering trust, and creating environments where every member feels valued and understood is louder than ever.

In this modern era, where disconnection and disengagement in the workplace are all too common, despite the allure of office perks, the significance of crafting a purpose-driven organizational culture cannot be overstated. Employees are not just seeking a paycheck; they desire to be part of a collective narrative, a mission that transcends the mundane and makes a lasting impact. Research suggests that a staggering majority would even forgo higher salaries for a sense of belonging, alignment with core values, and a resonant purpose.

This shift towards a culture that cares could not be more crucial as organizations grapple with the complex challenge of motivating and retaining top talent. But shifting from a profit-centric to a people-centric mindset requires a deep and intentional reimagining of leadership roles. Leaders are now challenged to adopt a nurturing approach, focusing on recognition, growth, and collective achievement rather than personal accolades.

The implications of such a leadership style are profound, impacting everything from team dynamics to overall business outcomes. It calls for a deep understanding of the human element in business, recognizing that fostering psychological safety and trust can elevate team performance to its peak. As the conversation on leadership continues to advance, embracing these ideals could very well be the cornerstone of thriving in an exponentially growing business landscape.

Meet Joey

Joey Havens has a 30+ year history of growing leaders and elevating others based on a personal purpose of helping people see and realize their full potential. In addition to his weekly beBetter blog, he is the author of numerous white papers and articles, including “Becoming the Firm of the Future,” published by AICPA. He has coauthored four books during his career at HORNE, including his newest Leading with Significance: How to Create a Magnetic, People-First Culture.

28 Jul 2020The Responsibility Ethic | Former Olympian Adam Kreek | Episode 12500:50:09

To develop something new that solves a significant problem and creates real value for customers, you have to take risk proportionate to the potential return. Yet, most people are conditioned to avoid risk. Leading innovation requires a willingness to pursue a goal without knowing exactly how you’ll achieve it. To overcome the fear of failure and move forward with pursuing the unknown, leaders must learn to embrace the concept of being “directionally correct.”

Kreek is a powerful guide who teaches us how to realize our full potential at any stage of our career and lives. Drawing on his 8 years of intensive Olympic training, ocean expeditions, and career as an executive coach and corporate trainer, Kreek shares winning strategies from the trenches, where the strongest minds prevail. From promising start-ups to Fortune 500 companies including Microsoft, General Electric, the Chicago Blackhawks, Mercedes-Benz, L’Oréal, Kreek has helped hundreds of thousands of leaders clarify values and strategy, develop high-performing teams, manage change and maximize leadership capacity. After 73 days alone at sea, Adam Kreek and his expedition team survived a near death capsize in the Bermuda Triangle, the subject of the Dateline NBC documentary Capsized. Four years earlier, Kreek won Olympic Gold with his eight man rowing team. A two-time Olympian, he holds 60 international medals and multiple Hall of Fame inductions.

It seems that top talent is leaving their jobs at an alarming rate, leaving organizations struggling to maintain their staff levels. But fear not, because in this episode we have a real-life story that will help you understand how to avoid this crisis.

In our discussion, we'll explore the concept of retaining employees by training them well enough so they can leave, but treating them well enough so they don't want to. We'll take inspiration from Richard Branson's famous quote and discuss the importance of providing training, skill development, and support to keep employees engaged and satisfied in their roles.

Furthermore, we'll delve into the significance of supporting employees when they decide to leave, as this can leave a lasting impression on their perception of the organization and influence their recommendations to others. By adopting these practices, leaders can foster a strong organizational culture and increase the likelihood of retaining top talent.

To illustrate these principles, we'll use a real-world example from the world of hockey. We'll examine how the Montreal Canadiens, a renowned hockey team, transformed their culture by prioritizing the well-being and support of their players. This change not only improved their recruitment efforts but also enhanced their reputation within the league.

So if you're ready to learn valuable strategies to retain your top talent, stay tuned for an insightful and engaging episode of the Peak Performance Leadership Podcast. Let's dive in and discover the keys to building a strong and thriving organization. Welcome aboard!

07 Oct 2021The Art of Alignment | Art Johnson00:50:40

Organizational alignment is not accidental. Leaders define their organization’s mission and vision and are responsible for creating the roadmaps to get there. Attaining alignment is dependent on the leader’s ability to inspire his or her followers to pursue a common purpose with energy and zeal. It’s up to the leaders to help employees see the vision clearly. Leaders need to develop their skills to include a variety of ways to communicate, encourage teamwork, and drive accountability. They need to set clear and ethical goals for themselves and others. And they need to give honest and timely feedback with the objective of enabling individuals to increase their own performance levels — not criticize or lay blame when plans fail. When leaders have done their work of alignment well, the organization runs like a well-oiled machine and there’s little need for the leader to be in the trenches. Instead, leaders remain accessible and allow the work to flow.

Art serves as CEO of Orgametrics and works with clients across the country. Art has a long history with large corporations, with leadership stints at IBM, USWest (CenturyLink) and Medtronic. Art has also served as an Adjunct Professor with the Hamline University School of Business teaching their MBA candidates in Strategic Management.

During this interview Art and I discuss the following topics:

  • How alignment will help leaders achieve peak performance
  • How culture helps us achieve alignment
  • The 9 pillars of cultural alignment
  • Where organizations become misaligned most often
  • How messaging is communicated through aligned organizations
  • Why humility is so important

08 Jun 2023Creating a Plan for Success in Promoting Well-being at Work | Richard Safeer | Episode 26400:49:34

Lots of programs and benefits most often don’t lead to a more well employee. However, when employers install a culture of health in the workplace, employees are more than twice as likely to reach their well-being goals than employees who are still subject to a workplace wellness model that formed more than 60 years ago.

Richard Safeer, MD, earned his BS in Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University under the tutelage of T. Colin Campbell, author of the China Study, before attending medical school at State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Safeer is the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-being at Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he leads the Healthy at Hopkins employee health and well-being strategy. He also holds faculty appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to arriving at Hopkins, Dr. Safeer practiced family medicine in Northern Virginia. He was then on faculty at the George Washington University, serving as the Residency Director of Family Medicine in his last year at the institution. He was the Medical Director of an Occupational Health Center in Baltimore and Wellness Director for the Mid-Atlantic region of the parent company, just before starting at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Baltimore, Maryland as the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine. He has been credited by some for bringing ‘wellness’ in to the realm of responsibilities of the managed care industry. He also led CareFirst BCBS to be among the first cohort of health plans to be accredited for Wellness by NCQA.

He holds faculty appointments in both the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as well as the School of Public Health. He continues to see patients one day a week in the Pediatric Cardiology department. Dr. Safeer is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, The American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the American College of Preventive Medicine. He served on the board of directors for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. He is on the New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst Insight Council.

03 Mar 2022Fight The Great Resignation | Episode 20800:16:57

Leaders across the world and all industries find themselves in a very similar situation - employee shortages due to the "Great Resignation." The Great Resignation is the ongoing phenomenon where large numbers of employees have been leaving their jobs in search of other opportunities or life changes. But why is this happening in the first place and how can leaders mitigate it to protect their organizations. That is what we are investigating today.

Why the Great Resignation?

When the Global COVID-19 pandemic struck the world, it caused a large number of people to either be laid off from their job, furloughed, or forced to work from home. This was coupled with the ever increasing "This Great Resignation is due to employees rethinking what work means to them in a post-pandemic world." NPR explains that this “Great Resignation” is due to employees reevaluating what work means to them, how they are valued by employers, and how they spend the majority of their time.

Topics

In this solo episode I talk about the following topics:

  • What the Great Resignation is
  • Why psychological Safety is important
  • How to establish connection with your team
  • Why workplace wellbeing is important
  • How to address burnout

25 Mar 2020Applying Conscious Leadership | Michael Bianco-Splann | Episode 10700:46:33

Today’s leaders have many faces. From pedal-to-the-medal startups to behemoth multinational corporations, those in various leadership roles have one thing in common: they’re all burning out. A 2013 study of C-Suite executives and senior managers found that roughly 80 percent of respondents felt overworked, overloaded, powerless, and unrewarded. Fast forward to 2019, and in some industries, such as healthcare, burnout is so extreme it could have pushed 51 percent of executives to leave their jobs. And just this May, the World Health Organization recognized this crisis by expanding its definition of occupational burnout in the ICD-11 International Classification of Diseases. Those leaders who did not burn out, practiced conscious leadership in their daily lives.

Michael Bianco-Splann is a conscious leadership expert, inspirational speaker, and master certified corporate trainer with over 30 years of front-line executive experience. He offers a transformative approach to leadership—within Fortune 100 companies to small boutique enterprises—for those seeking a life that’s true to one’s passion and purpose. He is the author of Conscious Leadership: 7 Principles That Will Change Your Business and Change Your Life.

Topics

During the interview, Michael and I discuss the following topics:

  • How he was inspired to write his book.
  • What being a conscious leader means to him
  • The 7 principles leaders can implement to change their lives

17 Mar 2021BLEND YOUR CULTURE, STRATEGY, AND EXECUTION | DAN BRUDER | EPISODE 15900:49:42

Competitive advantage and financial gain have become widely accepted strategic priorities for companies. Yes, many companies invest in professional development for employees and support volunteer and charitable programs. Yet, such efforts are rarely incorporated into the organization’s core focus, outcomes, and actions, let alone its true purpose for being in business. Putting competition and profits first not only devalues individual workers; it hurts the entire organization. With the outbreak of COVID-19, many people responded with anxiety and lost their motivation for working as their companies scrambled to adapt to the challenges, including managing a remote workforce. Focusing on problems and clinging to the goal of market dominance at all costs takes a toll on employees, customers, and their communities, as well as a company’s reputation and bottom line.

Dan Bruder is the CEO of Fusion Dynamics Group, an international strategy and leadership consulting firm based in Colorado. He has an accomplished background in executive leadership, strategic planning, entrepreneurship, sales and marketing operations, brand development, customer service, and corporate finance. Drawing on his 30-plus years of personal leadership, he created The Blendification® System, a series of workshops and keynotes blending culture, strategy, and execution to help companies, individuals, and communities realize their potential. He is a faculty member of Colorado State University’s Executive MBA program and the University of Colorado, Boulder’s Graduate Leeds School of Business.

Topics

During this interview Dan and I discuss the following topics:

  • His background and experience
  • The inspiration behind his book
  • What the Blendification system is
  • Why organizations don’t have a blended organizational system
  • What system intelligence is and how leaders can use it
  • The execution model to ensure success

18 Jan 2023Dealing with the Home / Work Split 00:21:15

As a leader, it’s essential to recognize that people don’t leave their work issues at home nor do they leave personal issues at work. Instead, they bring these two lives together in a way some might refer to as “integrated life strategy.” Employees can’t afford to be distracted by personal worries while on the job and employees need comfort of family and friends after a rough day at work. Without the ability to let both work and home life blossom, employees often feel unhappy and unproductive.

Gone are the days when people believed that work and life were two distinct identities. The truth is, they’ve become increasingly intertwined in this day and age. In fact, the most successful leaders understand that happy employees are more productive, so it’s important to create environments where workers can be their whole selves. Whether you think of it as “work-life integration” or “work-life balance,” it’s essential to create an ecosystem in which employees thrive both inside and outside of the workplace. This means allowing them to bring their home issues to work (and vice versa) while still getting the job done. It may seem like a difficult balance to strike, but with the right strategies, it’s certainly achievable. Investing in your employees’ well-being will pay dividends for years to come.

13 Apr 2022Leading Change from the Inside Out | Erika Andersen | Episode 21400:42:33

Unless you’ve been living on another planet, the past few years have shown that we’re in a time of unimagined and unrelenting change—and we’re not very good at it. According to McKinsey & Company, an alarming 70% of all change initiatives fail, largely because we’re biologically hardwired to return to what’s worked for us before. But to create the future we hope for (and cope with the here and now), we need to embrace the very thing we’re wired to avoid, says one author-expert-thought leader.

Erika Andersen is the founding partner of Proteus, a coaching, consulting, and training firm that focuses on leader readiness. Over the past 30 years, Erika has developed a reputation for creating approaches to learning and business-building that are tailored to her clients’ challenges, goals, and culture. She and her colleagues at Proteus focus uniquely on helping leaders at all levels get ready and stay ready to meet whatever the future might bring.

Much of her recent work has focused on organizational visioning and strategy, executive coaching, and management and leadership development. In these capacities, she serves as a consultant and advisor to the CEOs and top executives of several corporations, including Spotify, Amazon, Revolt TV and Media, Charter/Spectrum, and the Yale School of Public Health. She also shares her insights about managing people and creating successful businesses by speaking to corporations, non-profit groups and national associations

Topics

During this interview Erika and I discuss the following topics:

  • Where leaders fail leading change
  • The three things that people want to know during a period of change
  • How leaders can foster change from the inside
  • The 4 levers of change
  • Her 5 step model for change management

10 Mar 2021Motivate the Demotivated Employee | Cathy Busy & Tara Peters | Episode 15800:51:08

It’s no secret that unmotivated employees can ravage a business. Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, nearly 70 percent of employees were less than enthusiastic about (and less than committed to) their work, costing U.S. businesses between $450 and $550 billion each year. Add in one worldwide pandemic, newly remote and anxious employees, and news of daily layoffs, and leaders are left to plead, “Now what?” as employees mentally check out. Though it’s tempting to blame homebound workers and current events for cratering employee engagement, the most significant cause of demotivation—despite everything above—are the managers and leaders themselves.

CATHY BUSH, Ph.D., has spent decades investing in the development of leaders as an organizational psychologist, consultant, professor, coach, and author. She has worked with leaders around the globe to create the organizational cultures people love to work for—and clients love to work with—in a wide array of industries, including manufacturing, transportation, publishing, healthcare, retail, and banking. She is the co-author of the new book The Demotivated Employee: Helping Leaders Solve the Motivation Crisis That is Plaguing Business.

TARA PETERS, Ph.D., is a gifted educator, TED Talk speaker, bestselling author, and international consultant with a client list that includes Coca-Cola, Allstate, Walmart, and Ocwen. A professional educator for more than 26 years, she currently serves as a professor at Northwood University’s Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management and as academic dean for its Texas campus. She is the co-author of the new book The Demotivated Employee: Helping Leaders Solve the Motivation Crisis That is Plaguing Business.

During this interview, Cathy, Tara, and I discuss the following topics:

  • The motivation and inspiration behind the book
  • How employees go from motivated to demotivated
  • How stress can impact an employee’s motivation

09 Mar 2023Maintaining Boundaries with Your Team while Supporting Them00:19:36

In today's work culture, it can often be difficult to maintain a balance between managing the demands of our workload and building close relationships with our team members. While strong teamwork is essential for the overall success of a business or project, personal boundaries need to be established in order to ensure goals are met in a timely and efficient manner. The following quote is from Facebook Group Member Valarie and her question revolving around just this challenge:

Knowing your direct reports well without overextending yourself. Patrick Lencioni talks about anonymity leading to job misery and I agree with this. I know my large team fairly well. Recently implemented middle managers as team leads due to there not being enough of me to go around. I want to continue to foster relationships with the new employees so that I will have the same level of relational vibe that I have with most of my team. I am struggling with ways to do this as it takes a lot of time. I know it doesn’t have to; however, I am finding that once I open the door to getting to know them more, they want more and more time with me and so I am wondering about ways to provide better communication and clarity in those earlier meetings as I think I may be unintentionally creating the impression that I am available to them more often than my time allows or that I was initially available and now I’m not as available and that can be confusing and send a message I am not intending to send.

For context, I’m in my 4th year of leadership and I have a team of about 20. They all reported directly to me until January so I am wondering if some of this is just the shifting that’s occurring.

Thanks in advance!!

  • Question from Valarie

So lets dive into how I believe that its best for leaders to tackle this challenge with a number of tactical pieces of advice for her.
