11 Feb 2022 | #28 - Floor Flurij, Een Jaar Lang Breien uit Stash | 00:42:25
A Smaller Life is a bi-lingual podcast. This episode is in Dutch. If you are a (native) English speaker and want to talk about your journey in crafting your own conscious wardrobe, let me know; I'd be happy to talk to you so we can share a similar interview with our English speaking audience! 08 Apr 2022 | #32 - 4 Fundamental Steps For Starting Small Businesses | 00:38:51
Join our community here! In this solo episode I share my 4 Fundamental Steps For Starting Small Businesses. Last week, in a very energetic mood, I asked my mailing list subscribers "What can I do for you right now? How can I help? And I was bracing myself for a whole week of full service and connecting. Being generous as a business is important and it can really help you to figure out what people need. I did get a number responses but not enough to keep me occupied for a whole week. So I decided to answer the most asked question in this episode of the podcast and make good use of what I just learned. "What steps do I take first when I want to start my small business?" I know what it feels like when you are a (starting) solo-preneur. So much uncertainty. So many questions. It can get pretty scary and it makes you stop in your tracks. While your mind is in overdrive, you are not moving forward. After 16 years of running a small business and starting dozens of side hustles, I know a thing or two of what is truly important and what fluff you can leave to the side. Because we don't have time for crap shizzle. Am I right? In line with the generous and energetic mood I was in, I've also made a free download for all of you who are curious or want to start their small business soon. 22 Apr 2022 | #33 - 'Hart op de Tong' pt 4. Over stoppen met social media als bedrijf. Zijn we gek of best wel slim bezig? | 01:07:40
'Hart op de tong' is a series of talks in Dutch. When you see this title or this picture, you'll know that it's a Dutch Episode. You know me as a guide, mentor and teacher, but I've also set off on a new adventure, coaching. Coaching gets a bad rep sometimes, but when it's done right, it can be really transformational. As part of my coaching education, I'll soon need to do real coaching sessions. This episode I'm giving you Half Way There insight on the Me Made May Pledge I took. Letting you know what's going on, if I'm any good at keeping the pledge. If I have learned something so far? Do I have regrets? "I SASKIA, PLEDGE TO WEAR ONLY HANDMADE CLOTHES (by me or someone else) AND A FEW ITEMS FROM SUSTAINABLE BRANDS THAT ARE GOOD TO MAN, ANIMAL & EARTH." And as we are approaching the half way point of 2022, I look back at what I've been up to so far in my business after the great pivot of 2021. Letting you in on all the goings on. 21 Oct 2022 | #46 - Alice Karolina @ The Ethical Move on Ethical Marketing | 01:00:39
We welcome Alice from The Ethical Move this week on A Smaller Life! Alice owns a branding firm, and she runs an online community (with the help of dedicated others) that's focused on ethical branding / marketing. How do we attract customers without using lead magnets? How can we appeal to our customers without manipulating them? These are the kind of questions they ask at https://www.theethicalmove.org/
Main Takeaways
more take-aways in the shownotes on the website.
"...and that is really where the community is strongest, like the community is really meant to hold that space where we work on our ethical marketing pursuits, because they will last a lifetime. This is a great un-learning and a great re-creating of what we want things to be, you know? Like if we don't use lead magnets, what do we do? If we don't use the typical selling strategies, what are strategies that work, that work more, let’s say cyclically or in a natural connection? What about relationship? I just think branding goes a lot deeper than we think."– Alice Karolina, The Ethical Move

04 Nov 2022 | #47- Janne de Hoop @ Hollands Wol Collectief on turning local wool into product | 00:46:54
Before The Holland Wool Collective came along, tons of wool was going to waste. There was a gap between people who had wool, people who processed it into a usable product, and wholesalers or designers who needed the material. Farmers in the Netherlands needed more options as far as who to send their wool to; there wasn’t anyone gathering that material to send it to be processed it into usable medium– like felt or yarn. At least, not until Janne de Hoop and her partner Mirthe Snoek came along. Within a week of launching their website, they had received at least 30 calls from sheep farmers with wool to get rid of. Still in the early stages, Janne from the Hollands Wol Colletief gives us a sneak-peek into what goes on behind the scenes in this start-up cooperative that utilizes what, in the past, was going to waste. What a joy to have her with us! We talk about taxes, balancing work life and personal life, launching a company with a friend, and figuring things out as you go. 18 Nov 2022 | #48- Elizabeth Joy of Conscious Style explaining conscious and sustainability lingo | 01:02:52
In this episode, you’ll hear from Elizabeth Joy of Conscious Style. Elizabeth is a content creator that cares about fashion and style in a conscious way. We talk about green washing, the use of wording and descriptions in the field of conscious fashion and educating through podcasts and other channels. Elizabeth Joy MAIN TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE
QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “When you search a term like, ‘ethical fashion’, a term like ‘sustainable fashion’... you see the Google ads of brands that are totally not sustainable. It’s really frustrating, right? They have the money, they have the budget to sort of, green-wash their way into sustainability, which… it feels like we’re up against a lot but, yeah. I just really think it’s important to educate; try to educate as many people who will listen and who are curious.”

Zoe Edwards joins us again! This time, we covered sustainable sewing and lots of things in between. I've asked Zoe to help me while I'm still quite new to sewing, to get a good foundation to a more sustainable sewing practice. 07 Apr 2023 | #58 - ‘In Conversation with Kathleen’ Overcoming Obstacles and Finding Success: A Journey of Mindfulness and Crafting | 00:37:58
In this episode we’re flipping things around. Kathleen Kettles, one of the most enthusiastic members of the Ja, Wol community and a podcaster herself is interviewing me. Her podcast ‘In conversation with Kathleen’ is all about how her guests define success. I was invited and I loved the atmosphere of this conversation so much that I wanted to share it with you as well. The main topic is my motto, “Progress over Perfection”, and we'll be discussing the importance of embracing imperfection and focusing on progress rather than perfection. It's easy to get caught up in striving for the perfect everything in all areas of our life, But it can it can lead to anxiety, self-doubt, and inaction. We'll be exploring ways to take action towards our goals, even if it means making mistakes along the way. We'll discuss the value of surrounding ourselves with a supportive community, celebrating our accomplishments, and being proud of how far we've come, even if the journey was difficult. Additionally, we'll dive into the impact that we can have on others by sharing our knowledge and experiences and being open to learning from them as well. I get a little bit more personal in this one, so I hope you like that. Grab your yarn, your needles or your dog or your laundry or whatever you wanna do, and enjoy our talk. 26 May 2023 | #62 - A Smaller Life is now: PATTERN SHIFT | 00:04:53
As you might have heard in the last episode I did with my friend Zoe Edwards, A Smaller Life is evolving into a podcast that is similar but a bit different. I was always talking to and with crafters and business owners in the field, from now on I will focus more on providing business owners in the needlecraft industry with practical business insights and actionable tips to help you get out of the pull of the day-to-day swamp. It will however still be interesting for crafters to see behind the curtains of businesses like yours. And I'm hoping that both crafters and business owners will send me voice messages ☞ and emails with their ideas and questions. So I can make my episodes even more to the point and helpful. 29 Sep 2023 | #69 - Prioritise You: Crafting a Healthy Business with Personal Intentions | 00:17:37
"In my daily life, I play numerous roles, including that of a mom, spouse, entrepreneur, friend, student, teacher, and patient. Each of these personas demands specific attention and care. Without a clear plan of action, I would often feel overwhelmed, struggling to prioritize tasks effectively. I vividly recall a time when my daily routine left me feeling drained and unexcited about my business. I would open my shop, feeling weighed down and directionless. I took on tasks as they came, without a strategic plan, resulting in stagnation. Despite having knowledge and ideas about what I should be doing to grow my business, exhaustion and lack of direction held me back." This excerpt touches on the challenges of balancing multiple roles and the impact of not having a clear plan in both personal and business life. It sets the stage for the importance of personal intentions in achieving clarity and focus. FULL SHOW-NOTES WITH TAKEAWAYS

29 Mar 2025 | #96 - Big Life Changes, Small Business Shifts | 00:19:06
SUMMARYWhen big life changes come along—like, say, getting a new puppy—our business rhythm often needs to shift too. In this warm and reflective episode, I talk about how I’m preparing for a new season that will require more flexibility and care. I share what went into the decision to welcome a Finnish Lapphund puppy into our home, and how I’ve been mentally and practically adjusting my business in advance. From revisiting my priorities to simplifying email strategies, I’m choosing sustainability over hustle, and presence over perfection. This episode is the beginning of a new podcast series that I’ll be recording in advance so I can step back this summer, while still showing up for my community and clients with intention. 25 Mar 2021 | #14 - Jonna van 't Hof on how to calculate fair prices for your work | 00:52:23
In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller. Jonna reacted on my Instagram stories about fair wages and prices for your work as a professional knitter. She was so specific about it that I needed to know more,I contacted her and as it turns out she's a professional in the field. It took me 2 seconds to invite her to be my guest on the podcast and l'm so glad she obliged. Jonna advises visual artists on legal and business matters and knits in her spare time. We had such an in-depth discussion about fair wages for self employed creatives. And fair and sustainable prices for handmade items. When do you call yourself a professional artist or crafter, is there a difference. How do you move from creating for fun to becoming a professional and what steps do you need to take. What I loved about this conversation is that it's all in your hands. It's a mindset if nothing else. Some of the best artists are self educated. "When you think it, if you have the right mindset, you can become it" A Professional Artist is someone who makes autonomous work you don't necessarily need an art education. Any artist is good enough and worthy enough of GOOD payment! Everyone who sees theirselves as a professional artist can become a member in the union. In this episode, I welcome Monique Boonstra, a very talented lace knitter and designer and general lovely person. She explains that her skills are part talent and part hard work and many hours of practice. In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller. You know me as a guide, mentor and teacher, but I've also set off on a new adventure, coaching. Coaching gets a bad rep sometimes, but when it's done right, it can be really transformational. As part of my coaching education, I'll soon need to do real coaching sessions. And it could be a really great opportunity for you to experience it at no or low cost. If you've ever been curious about working with me in this way, now's the time. Just send me an email: info@ja-wol.com This episode was sponsored by Ja, Wol. 03 Jun 2021 | #19 - Floor, Tama en Maaike talk about their experience as a member of the Conscious Knitting Club | 01:01:56
In this episode I welcome Floor, Tama en Maaike who have been active founding members of the Conscious Knitting Club. We talk about what made them decide to join, how the club is structured, what the value has been to them and how much time they invest. This interview was such a great experience for me because these women really proved to me that what I had envisioned for the club has become a reality. Connecting to other knitters and getting to a deeper level of consciousness about what and why and how we knit. I hope you'll enjoy this episode and if you want to become a member of the club, we'd love to have you, just go HERE and scroll down to see the special membership plans. You know me as a guide, mentor and teacher, but I've also set off on a new adventure, coaching. Coaching gets a bad rep sometimes, but when it's done right, it can be really transformational.
In this episode, you’ll hear from le Grande Dame of Wool, Clara Parkes. Clare is a New Your Times bestselling author, speaker and wool advocate. Oh m'gosh I had so much fun talking to Clara Parkes, our first conversation 'in sound' was awesome. Le Grand Dame of Wool has a way of talking about serious issues in such a fun way. This talk was recorded and shared with the Ja, Wol community in the late summer of 2021 but I'm so happy to share it with all of you now. We talk about trade offs, compromises we make as conscious knitters, how the industry is build and how we can keep it going and our heart's work; eating chips on you tube. If you are interested in serious information, packed in a bunch of laughter, this is your episode. It was wonderful to expand our Insta DM relationship to a visible and audible conversation. I hope you'll love it as much as I did. Enjoy! Shownotes: This is where you’ll find Clara's work You know me as a guide, mentor and teacher, but I've also set off on a new adventure, coaching.
