The New England Patriots faced a series of uninspiring opponents to start the regular season, from the hapless Pittsburgh Steelers, to the even more hapless Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. There's no way around it- the New England Patriots offense stunk against a middling Denver Broncos defense. Cam Newton looked bad in his return from the COVID-19 reserves and the continuous stream of injuries to the offensive line didn't help. The Patriots offense has been one of the worst in the league over the past two games- where is the offense from the first three weeks of the year? Julian Edelman has to be dealing with an injury, because he's been a ghost. The running backs are hurting from the lack of consistency on the offensive line. The New England Patriots are an impressive 8-0 through the first eight weeks of the season. They rank 1st in points scored and 1st in points allowed. The only other team since the NFL merger to accomplish all three feats was the 1985 Chicago Bears, who went on to win the Super Bowl. Additionally, over 60% of teams that have started 8-0 post-merger have reached the Super Bowl. Over one in three have won the whole thing. So the Patriots are in great company from a historical standpoint. They have no peers from a contemporary view of the AFC. As we inch closer and closer to the draft, the positional breakdowns continue. In this episode we look at the top offensive and defensive linemen in the draft, or, at least how Mark Schofield ranks them. We start with the offensive tackle group, which is as solid as a group gets. Then we kick things inside, looking at the interior offensive linemen. We have some nasty guys in the interior of this draft, including a Conrad Dobler comp. Then we switch to the defensive side of the football. Sure, Chase Young is EDGE1, but what about after that? This is an..interesting edge group. But when we kick inside, there is perhaps more depth to love. For example, the guy at IDL10 might be one of Mark's favorite players in this entire draft. Everything was set... My Friday afternoon was coming along wonderfully as I got things in order before heading out of town. Where to start with the New England Patriots' absolute awful performance against the San Francisco 49ers? Cam Newton was terrible. The wide receivers and tight ends- other than Jakobi Meyers, who has inexplicably been buried on the depth chart- were terrible. The offensive line suffered more injuries, this time to Joe Thuney and Justin Herron. The defensive front seven was terrible against the 49ers rushing attack, and the secondary didn't fare any better. The coaches were bad. Oh, but special teams had a pretty okay day kicking the ball, so...bright spots? Is this the death knell for the Patriots' 2020 season? Or can this team still turn it around? New year, new episode. Mark Schofield is back for the 60th installment of The Scho Show as we get closer and closer to Wild Card Weekend. In this episode, Mark turns his attention to the Tennessee Titans' defense. In the first half of the show Mark looks at their pass defense, and highlights some route concepts that have worked against the Titans' overwhelmingly single-high coverage schemes. Some route designs such as Yankee, Mills, Hoss and more should be part of the gameplan. In the second part of the show Mark focuses on the Titans' run defense. The numbers are not bad, but ther film highlights some flaws. The Patriots would be wise to attack the bubble, run weakside, run toss plays and look for cutback opportunitites against a linebacker group that can be slow to get into run fits. There have been 8 teams to go 7-0 since the 2010 season: 2011 Green Bay Packers, 2012 Atlanta Falcons, 2013 Kansas City Chiefs, 2015 Denver Broncos, 2015 Carolina Panthers, 2015 New England Patriots, 2015 Cincinnati Bengals, and 2018 Los Angeles Rams. 2015 was a crazy year. The 2019 New England Patriots are looking to be the 9th team to accomplish that feat this decade. Looking bigger picture, there have only been 6 teams in the Super Bowl era to post a better point differential through 7 games than the +142 point different the Patriots have through 6 games. Two of those teams (1991 Washington and 1999 St. Louis Rams) won the Super Bowl, and another three lost the Super Bowl (1967 Oakland Raiders, 2006 Chicago Bears, 2007 New England Patriots). The sixth team (1966 Dallas Cowboys) lost in the NFL Championship game to the Green Bay Packers, who went on to win the Super Bowl. Basically, the Patriots are in great company and are looking to join the ranks of the best teams in league history as they take on the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.
