04 Dec 2024 | Episode 191: From Undiagnosed ADHD to Dope Black Dad | 00:42:36
To say that this conversation is inspirational and heartfelt, thoughtful and emotional, and fundamentally captures all that this summit intends to convey to our listeners -- well, that’s an understatement. This conversation with Marvyn Harrison offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be an adult diagnosed with ADHD, what it means to be a black man diagnosed with and treated for ADHD, what it means to be a father with ADHD, a partner, an entrepreneur, a thought-leader. You get the picture. This conversation is a meta conversation about ADHD. And while it will appeal to everyone, it’s likely that it will resonate most with the adults with ADHD who are continuously trying to understand and manage themselves.
Marvyn Harrison is a visionary business consultant driving cultural change through BELOVD, working with clients like WPP, Footlocker, and News UK. As the founder of Dope Black Dads and Dope Black Men, he inspires greater change, advocating for the Black community across the UK, US, and Africa. A media contributor on platforms like Good Morning Britain and BBC 5Live, Marvyn has also authored two children’s books, *I Love Me* and *The Best Me,* and is writing a guide on personal transformation for men. His late-life ADHD diagnosis fuels his impactful work.
Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Marvyn Harrison about fatherhood and undiagnosed ADHD.
Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
Marvyn discusses his journey towards self-discovery and understanding his late-life ADHD diagnosis and the need for conscious in managing the condition.
One crucial tip shared by Marvyn revolves around the importance of being present and tuned in to your children's needs.
Marvyn points out, "There is no program to help men better at home. It's just kind of do it because it's the right thing to do." This calls for a more supportive and inclusive approach to fatherhood, acknowledging the diverse roles and responsibilities that dads undertake.

28 Feb 2024 | Ep 151: Improving Practices, Diagnosis, and Treatment of ADHD | 00:29:00
Sometimes in the world of ADHD, we parents come across a medical provider who really, really 'gets it.' This is one of those times! Dr. Aaron Dodini understands the nuances of diagnosing and treating ADHD, and has thoughts about the future of this complex condition. This conversation is a must listen for anyone with kids or adults who have ADHD in your family!
Dr. Aaron Dodini is a seasoned clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience in diagnosing and treating ADHD, particularly focusing on high achieving professionals and athletes who may have been overlooked in the diagnosis process. Aaron firmly believes in a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating ADHD, emphasizing that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. He advocates for a combination of medication, behavioral interventions, coaching, therapy, and creating supportive environments to address the various aspects of ADHD. His perspective is shaped by his extensive experience and his passion for empowering individuals to embrace their ADHD as a catalyst for growth and excellence.
Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Aaron Dodini about ADHD and treatment
Parenting is Leadership
Parenting is a leadership opportunity. With the "Parenting is Leadership" Guide from ImpactParents, two frameworks and a dozen core competencies will guide you to up-level your parenting... and improve the most important relationships of your life.
Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
Aaron emphasizes the importance of working with families, systems, and communities to provide support. He believes that a proper diagnosis for adults is crucial for improving their lives and their ability to support their children. When parents receive the support they need, they can reinforce support for their kids, leading to greater intimacy within the family.
According to Aaron, there is no cure for ADHD, but a combination of approaches can be beneficial. Medication is important, but should be complemented with behavioral training, therapies, and exercises. Aaron emphasizes the importance of using a whole toolbox of strategies to address the various aspects of ADHD.
Aaron explains, ADHD can be a catalyst for personal growth and excellence. Embracing a diagnosis of ADHD can lead to thriving and personal development. Therapy can help adults navigate the emotional aspects and come to terms with their diagnosis, although it may not address all executive function challenges. Aaron emphasizes the importance of self-love, compassion, and understanding oneself better, which therapy can facilitate. Ultimately, an ADHD diagnosis can serve as an invitation to self-awareness and growth.
Many of our defense mechanisms and ways of motivating ourselves that once served us well may no longer be effective as we evolve. Elaine mentions the "stick" that adults with ADHD have used to beat themselves up in order to be successful. While this coping mechanism may have worked in the past, it is important for individuals to learn to put the stick down and find healthier ways to motivate themselves.

Emotions are a tricky thing. They can be beautiful and powerful … but not always rational. When they become intense or come on too strong, they are hard to handle. When they’re always intense, it can feel intolerable! DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) -- which is different from traditional talk therapy and more targeted than CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) -- can teach complex kids how to handle intense emotions so they don't always feel so overwhelmed.
Dr. Vay is the director of the DBT program at Peachtree Comprehensive Health (Peachtree DBT) in Atlanta, GA. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor. Dr. Vay is the President of the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification™ and a DBT Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician ™.
Prior to working in the outpatient setting, Dr. Vay has worked in a residential setting applying DBT to adolescents at the residential level of care. While working in the residential facility, Dr. Vay lead the team in becoming the first residential treatment center to become a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Program. She is also one of the official Site Reviewers for future programs seeking certification through DBT-Linehan Board of Certification.
Dr. Vay has also received intensive training in Radically Open DBT(RO-DBT), Prolonged Exposure-DBT for trauma (DBT-PE), DBT-PTSD, DBT protocol adapted for children (DBT-C) as well as Level One and Two of Theraplay® and Group Theraplay®.
Dr. Vay also supervises other clinicians and provides DBT consultation to other DBT clinicians who are either seeking certification or just wish to enhance their adherence to the treatment model.

02 Oct 2024 | Ep 182: Using Novelty to Hack Your Child's ADHD | 00:32:57
Whether you’re talking about ADHD, Autism, or 2e, developing neurodivergent brains in kids require adults to understand what it takes to get activated. The ADHD brain, for example, is understimulated. It doesn’t respond to rewards the same way as neurotypical brains. And it has a complicated relationship with motivation. So how can you help kids with ADHD (and other kinds of neurodiversity) to get essential stuff done? One key motivational tool is novelty. Join us to understand better why ADHD brains thrive on novelty, how novelty and motivation are tied together, and how you as a parent or a professional can integrate novelty when supporting your kids (of any age!). And remember: this fundamental hack can serve you well with all members of your family and community.
Emily Kircher-Morris, M.A., M.Ed., LPC, is a former educator, author, and speaker. Inspired by her own experiences as a neurodivergent person, she is dedicated to destigmatizing neurodiversity and supporting neurodivergent people of all ages. She hosts The Neurodiversity Podcast, which explores the psychological, educational, and social needs of neurodivergent people, and is the author of several books, including "Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today's Classroom"(Free Spirit Publishing, 2021), "Raising Twice-Exceptional Children" (Taylor & Francis, 2022), "A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children" (Gifted Unlimited, LLC, 2023), and "Neurodiversity-Affirming Schools" (Free Spirit Publishing, in press). She speaks at statewide, national, and international conferences and is in private practice in Missouri.
Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Emily Kircher-Morris.
Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
Emily highlights the importance of incorporating novelty in educational settings to engage neurodivergent individuals effectively.
Tailored strategies and support, like universal design for learning, are crucial in catering to the specific needs of neurodivergent students and those facing situational neurodiversity challenges.
Emily stresses the importance of validating parents' efforts in supporting their neurodivergent kids, acknowledging the learning journey both for the child and the parent in understanding themselves and their unique needs.

18 Nov 2022 | Bonus Archive Ep 025: ADHD Identity is Connected to Sleep Management | 00:28:53
"I don't know anyone with ADHD who doesn't have trouble with sleep," says Guest Expert Dr. Roberto Olivardia, kicking things right into gear for this week’s podcast. Along with eating and general impulsivity, sleep is a top complaint Olivardia hears from parents of the kids he works with.
It’s important to know that it’s not kids being difficult that causes the problems. Research shows that, for many with ADHD, their circadian rhythm can actually be offset, which makes it hard to fall asleep.
Roberto Olivardia, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he specializes in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and in the treatment of eating disorders in boys and men. He has spoken on numerous podcasts and webinars and presents at many talks and conferences around the country. He currently sits on the Professional Advisory Boards for Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD) and the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA). He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for ADDitude and is a Featured Expert for Understood.
