08 Apr 2024 | BookTok & Unhealthy Masculinity | 00:51:53
Welcome to the NEW podcast all about parenting teens with Cat & Nat. Each week we are going to go over topics that you need to know and bring an expert to break down an important topic. New episodes every Monday, subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts. It's no secret that there's a history of sexism, misogyny and hypermasculinity in sport, particularly in elite men's hockey. In elite sport, masculinity is often defined by glorifying toughness, promoting aggression, encouraging 'bro culture', and upholding the locker room 'code'. But what does this mean for parents raising kids who want to take part in sports like hockey? We put our kids in sports so they can make new friends, get active, and learn about sportsmanship - certainly not to fall into a culture of toxicity and misogyny. Dr. Teresa Anne Fowler, PhD in Gender and Sexuality Studies, joined us to break down her research into the cultural reproduction of masculinity and how parents can work to make change and protect their kids from unhealthy masculinity in sports. For more on Dr. Teresa find her at https://profiles.ucalgary.ca/teresa-fowler. This podcast is presented by The Common Parent. The all-in-one parenting resource you need for your teens & tweens. On social media, in the news, and even from the government, children are receiving the message that being selfish, obnoxious, and cruel is okay. Research tells us that hate crimes among children and teens are on the rise while compassion and empathy are dropping. How are we as parents supposed to raise kind and compassionate kids when they're constantly exposed to imagery, negativity, and division that influences how they view the world? Melinda Wenner Moyer is a science and parenting journalist and author. She is a contributing editor at Scientific American magazine and a regular contributor and former columnist at The New York Times. Her first book, How To Raise Kids Who Aren’t Assholes, was published in July 2021 and won a gold medal in the 2022 Living Now Book Awards. Welcome to the NEW podcast all about parenting teens with Cat & Nat. Each week we are going to go over topics that you need to know and bring an expert to break down an important topic. New episodes every Monday, subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts. As our teens get older we face the reality that our voice is no longer the presence it once was and it is now one of many voices in their lives. Influences are everywhere. Their friends matter, like REALLY matter. Friends become everything, whether it be good or bad. Are we watching from afar or are we able to step in and voice our concerns? We brought in Marybeth Bock, Master of Public Health (MPH), to explain why parents should come from a place of being inquisitive rather than judgmental when it comes to who their child is spending their time with. Marybeth writes for numerous websites such as Raising Teens Today, Grown and Flown and Collegiate Parent. For more on Marybeth check out @mbbock. This podcast is presented by The Common Parent. 28 Oct 2024 | AI Is Everywhere: What Can We Do? | 00:37:15
Why do we hold our kids to a higher standard than we hold ourselves when it comes to how we conduct ourselves online? Everywhere you look, there are people dropping negative comments. What if social media just turned off comments for a year—or even just two months? Would we all feel a bit better? Let’s be honest, it’s hard to feel good about yourself after leaving a negative comment. So what’s the real motivation? Are we looking for engagement, a debate, or just reacting to something we don’t agree with? Check out https://www.thecommonparent.com/ for all things parenting. Hosted on Acast. 23 Dec 2024 | Get Your Kids To Listen with Amy McCready | 00:31:16

13 Jan 2025 | Raising Boys | 00:38:12
Raising boys and girls is like raising two completely different species. They’re different to parent, different to be around, yet equally fascinating. In this episode, we explore the stereotypes and doomsday narratives surrounding raising boys—and why they don’t tell the full story. Boys today are often more advanced than we give them credit for, and sometimes even more emotionally in tune than their dads. As moms, one of our biggest jobs is decoding their needs and diving a little deeper into their world. Want our podcasts sent straight to your phone? There will be moments when your child shares a huge dream—like going to the NHL or attending university in a different country—and you’ll have to find the balance between validating their dream and not crushing their spirit. 24 Feb 2025 | Is 18 Still the Launching Age for Teens? | 00:40:18
This week we chatted about the ‘launching age for teens’ and how we feel that realistically it is no longer 18. Is this a reflection of how we parent? Some kids in the US will 'reclassify' to improve grades or become more competitive in sports. It seems like a positive spin when your kid is not ready for university. Is that the right approach? We also take an unexpected turn from a parenting podcast to a religious one at the end. Tune in as we try and figure it all out. Want our podcasts sent straight to your phone? 10 Mar 2025 | The Snapchat Generation | 00:30:11
As parents, we need to wake up—our teenagers have never known a world without Snapchat, and there’s an entire set of unwritten rules that no adult has subscribed to, checked, or even questioned. So, what do we do? Banning the phone isn’t the answer, but keeping the conversation going is. The unavoidable reality is that these devices are now their wallets, their transit passes, and their safety nets. It’s complicated, it’s frustrating, and we’re here to try and figure this world out "alongside" our children. For more info on our Screen Sense Guide, head to thecommonparent.com Hosted on Acast. 17 Mar 2025 | Parenting in the Digital Age | 00:34:13
Gone are the days when teens only worried about homework and who was dating who—now they’re plugged into everything from politics to world events before we’ve even had our first sip of coffee. But do we really know what they’re consuming and how it’s affecting them? How do we raise kids who can navigate the world, build healthy relationships (with their phones and real people), and step into adulthood ready—not reliant on us or their screens? 24 Mar 2025 | Emojis Tell a Story | 00:33:14
Emojis aren’t just cute little symbols. Our kids are using them to tell a story, and most parents have no clue what they actually mean. In this episode, we dive into the Netflix show "Adolescence" and how we often hear parents say the words “my kid would never”. Those words might be the most naive thing you can say as a parent. It’s our job to set the boundaries, to teach them how to navigate a device that can expose them to things they’re not ready for. If we don’t understand the way they use their phones, how can we help them build a healthy relationship with technology? This podcast is presented by The Common Parent. 07 Apr 2025 | Growing Up Isn’t What It Used to Be | 00:32:00
Teenagehood today looks very different than it used to. Kids are home more and growing up in a world that’s far more supervised and a lot less rebellious. What happened to the sneaking out, the secrets, and the harmless mistakes that turned into life lessons (and great stories)? We grew up making questionable choices, pushing boundaries, and learning the hard way—and somehow, we turned out just fine. These days, even a small act of rebellion can earn a kid a harsh label. But aren’t teenagers supposed to mess up a little? In this episode, we’re reflecting on how much has changed and what today’s teens are missing out on. This podcast is presented by The Common Parent. 14 Apr 2025 | Before ChatGPT We Called A Friend | 00:32:02
We're not here to pat ourselves on the back, but we do like to keep it pretty real with our kids. Like how open we are about who we were back in the day—what we were like at school, how we handled being students and how we literally tapped out of traditional education at a certain point. We can help our kids with homework but at some point we hit our cap. When we were growing up, there was no ChatGPT—you had to call a friend, compare notes, and figure it out together. It was all peer-to-peer, and we kind of miss that. This podcast is presented by The Common Parent. The all-in-one parenting resource you need to for your teens & tweens.
