Today, Lara sits down with Kathy Simon, a registered Speech Language Pathologist and founder of Simon Says Speech and Alberta Therapy Co., based in Edmonton, Alberta. From understanding key speech and language milestones, to the importance of reading to your child, Kathy and Lara cover it all. Plus, Kathy shares practical strategies parents can use at home to support their child's speech development.

Kathy's journey into Speech Language Pathology began at Western University and took her to northern Ontario, where she worked with diverse communities, including remote Indigenous populations. This experience shaped her family-centered approach to therapy. In Edmonton, she worked with preschoolers and children with complex communication needs in the education system and with the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society.

In 2020, Kathy founded Simon Says Speech, which has grown into the multidisciplinary Alberta Therapy Co., offering a range of therapeutic services for families. Kathy is passionate about helping families navigate the variety of therapeutic services they may need, including psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, registered dietitian services, pediatric physiotherapy, child life specialist support, and behavioural consulting.

Lisa Dixon–Wells has been working in school systems across Canada since 1990. After completing her M.Ed in Educational Psychology (1997), Lisa’s focus has been on Bully Prevention and Mental Health. As the founder of the Dare to Care program, her work has focused on early prevention and intervention in schools but in 2018, Lisa expanded her program to work with amateur sport organizations. Dare to Care is now a leader in the Safe Sport Movement. In 2016, Dare to Care received the Government of Alberta Inspiration Award for Leadership in Bully Prevention.


Lisa is a former member of the Canadian National Swim Club and is a 14- time World Masters champion. Lisa was inducted into the University of Calgary’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
