11 Jun 2021Strange Attractor Roundtable Ep 3: The Philosophy of Cool 01:58:33

After listening to Alex Ebert’s fantastic presentation ‘Dead Cool’ at the Stoa we thought we would invite Alex, who like Alexander Bard, is a pop star turned philosopher for a discussion on ‘The Philosophy of Cool’.  What is cool in the age of attentionalism?  What is fake cool and what is real cool? How is cool related to Réne Girard’s theories of mimetic desire.  Originally part of the Sweeny vs Bard podcast, we thought it exemplified a lively round table and should be part of the Strange Attractor series.  After all ‘cool’ is a strange attractor and mysterious enough to merit a serious conversation.

One of the coolest (in the sense of ‘most awesome’) conversations so far.  Part 2 coming soon.

Alex Ebert is an erstwhile multiplatinum songwriter and Golden Globe-winning film composer now taking up philosophy in New Orleans.   He is currently finishing his first book, Dead Cool, an analysis of sociodynamics and status anxiety in the age of Cool.

Alexander Bard: Alexander Bard is a Swedish author, lecturer, artist, songwriter, music producer, TV personality, philosopher and political activist, and one of the founders of the Syntheist movement along with his co-author Jan Söderqvist. His books include “The Futurica Trilogy”, “Digital Libido” & “Syntheism”.

Thomas Hamelryck is a Lecturer and Researcher at the Bioinformatics Centre at the University of Copenhagen Biocenter. His academic research interests revolve around  Machine learning, Bayesian statistics, Protein Structure Prediction, Probabilistic Programming, Deep Learning.  He is also an enthusiast of Réne Girard, and denies all rumours that he was once the keyboard player for Depeche Mode.

Andrew Sweeny:  Andrew Sweeny is a writer, editor, blogger, Youtuber, published poet, podcaster, musician, and teacher. He has worked as a touring musician and put out several albums, published a book of poetry, and animated two popular podcasts and a philosophical blog on Medium and now on Parallax. He Lectures at Sciences Po, in Paris, France.

And a discussion on the 2nd and 3rdd Sepirot: Chokhmah and Binah Dr. Marc Gafni is a visionary thinker, social activist, and passionate philosopher. Owen Cox and Daniel Fraga are the visionaries behind Techosocial, where they interview leading thinkers from the fringes of the internet, exploring how new technologies will reshape human societies and allow humans to redesign themselves.  Me and Tom Amarque are working to make Parallax a new platform for great young thinkers such as these guys.  We had a wonderful introductory conversation about the new paradigm, the current psycho-spiritual landscape, and how to escape the dying structures of a fallen world.

14 Aug 2019Dr Arne Rubinstein: Rites of Passage and the Ladder of Life00:58:57

Dr Arne Rubinstein is an expert on Rites of Passage and adolescent development, with 30 years experience as a medical doctor, counsellor, mentor, speaker and workshop facilitator. The programs, seminars and programs he’s helped to develop have been attended by over 100,000 people globally and are designed to support boys and girls to successfully make a safe, healthy transition to adulthood, with a particular focus on creating coming of age Rites of Passage. Dr Arne is the proud father of two wonderful young men and a mentor to many others.

I was very honored to talk to him and believe his message to be, not only life changing, but redeeming of civilization.  Real human development needs markers of transition from one stage to another, which is something sorely lacking in our society, and a principal cause of most of our social ills, from depression to suicide, to the opiate crisis, and because, as Arne points out many of of our leaders today, remain boys and girls, and because they have not properly gone through the kinds of rites of passage ceremonies which were once universal.

He has all kinds of theories about art, economics, sex and society,  which you will find are completely unique.  I've been talking to him since the late 90's about all kinds of stuff, and he's definitely one most acutely and deeply intelligent people I have ever met.     Support this channel and my writings by subscribing here or helping on Patreon:

09 Dec 2023The Hard Way - with Luke Bhencke - A new course exploring Gurdjieff's Fourth Way01:08:40

A deep conversation and a plug for Luke’s New course: https://www.parallax-media.com/courses/the-hard-way-with-luke-behncke In the early 20th Century, Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff brought an ancient system of personal transformation to the western world known as the ‘Fourth Way’ or the ‘Work’. He claimed that this system was the source of all spiritual traditions and now adapted for the modern world. Its focus is on the individual and community to understand the energies and forces of their nature through direct experience. In doing so, it would become possible to contact a different order of reality that can deepen the experience of life. Gurdjieff was clear that it is the most difficult work that anyone can undertake, but also the most productive. It calls for relentless authentic questioning and a discipline of special efforts that can enable a quality of relationship that nothing else can give. Gurdjieff affirmed that a sustained work of this kind would accelerate the necessary transformation of men and women to meet the demands of a responsible life while fulfilling their essential purpose. Join Luke Behncke in practically exploring some of the tenets of the Work on Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way - THE HARD WAY - from the Parallax Academy. Live sessions will be recorded, and participants will have access to a video of each recorded class. Participants will have one-on-one interviews with the instructor. 11 Aug 2022Meditations on The Tarot: Part 1 - The Magician, The High Priestess, and the The Empress00:23:18

A new series of video essays based on my summer reading of the 700-page spiritual classic, entitled Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism by the anonymous author whom everybody now knows was Valentine Tomberg.

This is not a summary of Tomberg’s work per say, but rather my own idiosyncratic reading of the Tarot partly inspired by Tomberg’s work. This series aims to explore Tarot symbolism—and is a contemplation of the meanings of the main archetypes presented in the Tarot card deck.  As a longtime practitioner of Tantric Buddhism, an intensely symbolic and, dare I say, magical path—I’m on a journey to understand the symbolism of western esoteric systems. Tarot and Tomberg’s book seemed like a fun place to start.

16 Oct 2020John Vervaeke and Christopher Mastropietro: Reinventio #5 Philia01:14:19

Here is the fifth of our ‘reinventio’ series—the latin word which means to both invent and discover.  We discuss the purpose and function of philia or sacred friendship, how a real friend differs from ordinary ‘buddies’ or ‘colleagues’.  One of the most touching and deep conversations I’ve had with these amazing scholars, human beings, and friends.

John Vervaeke is a professor at the University of Toronto and the creator of the popular online YouTube Series ‘Awakening from The Meaning Crisis’, which is a rich feast of cognitive science, philosophy, religion, and the history of ideas.  What makes Vervaeke special in my opinion is the breadth of his work, but his courage descend the ivory tower and talk to people ‘on the street’—and to exemplify his ideas.  His hero is Socrates, and he embodies the living dialogue and courage that Socrates represents.

I was first  introduced to Christopher Mastropietro by Peter Limberg for his series on Letter.com. Christopher is John Vervaeke’s writing and research partner and co-author of ‘Zombies in Western Culture: A Twentieth Century Crisis’.  A great book which I have used for undergraduate classes in Paris. Chris is among other things an amazing wordsmith who writes and speaks like an 19th Century Henry James/Herman Melville!

17 Jun 2022Sweeny vs Bard #55 with Owen Cox: Logos, Mythos, and Pathos - The Three Brains01:52:31
Both the end of the media academy season and the 55th Sweeny vs Bard. Alexander discusses different realms: the realm of one dogma, the realm of many dogmas in dialectic, and the realm of no dogma—in terms of sex, education and social organization. We also talked about sex difference, shamanism, and the difference between the tantric and the sutric realm. 2 hours of mad ideation and fun.
20 Jul 2020John Vervaeke and Zach Stein #4: Reinventing Education and Social Justice01:21:02

Today we are living in a period of paradigm shift—one which may be as dramatic as the shift to the axial age according to John, or even as big as the leap from a single-celled organism to the homo sapien, according to Zak!  A wide ranging discussion about how to reinventio (invent and discover) social justice and education and to rescue human interactions from social media pathologies.  How to change out relationships from the transactional to the dialogic—how to reinventio education and justice for the life world and steal the culture from the bottom up.  What is the quantum spiritual leap required in this time of apocalypse and renewal?

John Vervaeke is a professor at the University of Toronto and the creator of the popular online YouTube Series ‘Awakening from The Meaning Crisis’, which is a rich feast of cognitive science, philosophy, religion, and the history of ideas.  What makes Vervaeke special in my opinion is the breadth of his work, but his courage descend the ivory tower and talk to people ‘on the street’—and to exemplify his ideas.  His hero is Socrates, and he embodies the living dialogue and courage that Socrates represents.

Zak Stein is philosopher of education working at the interface of psychology, metaphysics, and politics. He has published two books, including Education in Time Between Worlds, along with dozens of articles. This writing was done as he worked co-founding a non-profit and think tank, as well as teaching graduate students at Harvard, and consulting with technology start-ups. Zak is a long time meditator, musician and caregiver, which has shaped him more than any professional engagements.  (Source: https://www.systems-souls-society.com)

w. Alexander Bard - Alex Ebert -Thomas Hamelryck - O.G. Rose - Dimitri Crooijmans - Andrew Sweeny - Daniel Fraga - Owen Cox - Raven  A third conversation with the mysterious figures of a legendary online philosophical forum called The Intellectual Deep Web. Attendees include Alexander Bard, OG Rose, Alex Ebert, Thomas Hamelryck, Daniel Fraga, and Raven Connolly.

Layman Pascal has described it thus:  The Intellectual Deep Web (a name that parodies and transcends the notorious ""intellectual dark web"") is a contingent of high-powered neo-philosophers lurking at the edges of the so-called Emerge field.   They are voracious, combative, obscenely well-read, performative, enticing, offputting, fast & deeply attuned to the leading edges of technosocial, occult, spiritual, psychoanalytic and cultural unfoldment.  Their vision of upgrade in a time between worlds is a Dark Renaissance.   This concept takes archaic futurism, technophilia, phallic vigor, immanent transcendence, interactivity, emergent informational worldviews, artistry, metalocalism and emergent religion and combines all that with an intoxicating affirmation of negation, dissonance, abysses and exclusionary boundaries.  Oh, and don't forget their deep skepticism about the unprocessed sexual and aggressive tendencies that might be locking the rest of us into a toothless and doomed utopianism.   https://www.whatisemerging.com/profiles/what-the-hell-is-a-dark-renaissance

25 Dec 2019The Divine Double: Christopher Mastropietro01:03:07

I was first  introduced to Christopher Mastropietro by Peter Limberg for his series on Letter.com, 'impossible conversations'. Our first 'impossible conversation can be found here’:  https://letter.wiki/conversation/232

Christopher is John Vervaeke’s writing and research partner and co-author of ‘Zombies in Western Culture: A Twentieth Century Crisis’.  A great book which I have used for undergraduate classes in Paris

We never got around to talking about ‘The Zombie Apocalypse’ or ‘Joker’ and other monsters, but instead had a wide ranging conversation about living ‘in between worlds’.  I found Chris to be congenial but also a very deep person, with an incredible and poetic gift for language and thinking.

The conversation begins with a query: ‘What is your divine double’?

27 Nov 2020From the archives: Tom Amarque & David Korten01:23:23

David C. Korten is a luminary in the field of economics, a member of the Club of Rome, an author of the order and essentially meets all the criteria for being considered 'wise'. I am quite happy that he took the time to talk to me about his new book, about cosmologies and stories, and about our possible futures.

01 Jul 2019Stephen Lewis and Andrew Sweeny in conversation part 301:16:33

This is the 3rd in a series of talks with  Stephen Lewis.  In this conversation we dare critique certain aspects of feminism.  On a broader level, we discuss how men and women can be sovereign in the face of redundancy in the meaning crisis.

Stephen Lewis is owns an organic bakery in Newfoundland, Canada, and is a singer-songwriter, and real philosopher—he is also a bit of a mystic by my estimation. He has all kinds of theories about art, economics, sex and society,  which you will find are completely unique.  I've been talking to him since the late 90's about all kinds of stuff, and he's definitely one most acutely and deeply intelligent people I have ever met.   Stephen's music can be heard here.  He's also definitely one of the best songwriters I know:

13 Aug 2021Introducing Maniphesto Media Academy00:10:50

Maniphesto Media Academy (aka MMA) is a virtual one-room school-house—an alternative learning platform—for those who want to take an intellectual and spiritual deep dive.  It is a weekly study group and lecture series, where we try to make sense of the present apocalyptic times.  At MMA we will celebrate creative content, think critically about the existing paradigm, and create a lively learning community.  Education is in crisis today. More than ever we need convivial spaces for real learning, free from cynical corporate demands, a top heavy administration, and the extreme political correctness which haunts the present academic environment.  As a University professor for some years, I feel that now is the time for us to collectively reinvent education for the future and rediscover its original meaning and purpose.  In this spirit, Maniphesto Media Academy is offering a creative space for free thinking and learning.

Beyond Sex, Drugs & Psychoanalysis toward an integrative spiritual life for collaborative metamodern syntheists in the Age of Connection, Complexity & Catastrophe

This new course from PARALLAX ACADEMY’s “Rebuilding Spirituality” curriculum is an in-depth exploration of connectedness as the root of both spiritual & religious practices for the emerging epoch.  The inimitable Layman Pascal will guide you through inner and interpersonal practices appropriate to a trans-secular age of digital, neural, mycelial & social networks.  What is required by the dynamic communities around you and within you?  What sorts of psychotechnologies work best for a world of links, interconnections and collaborative relationships?  How do we generate ritual, sacred togetherness and satisfying existential intensification in a universe of informational networks?

Join Layman for embodied wisdom-skill practices, supportive depth-oriented feedback in live Q & A sessions, and special access to advanced theory modules explaining the view necessary to make sense of how we reformat authentic transformational spirituality for our strange and disturbing times.

The "campfires" are bonus opportunities to ask questions of Layman in a casual setting about any material from any of the courses. They are also a space to share the results of various practices that one has been trying outside of the course sessions -- as well as a chance to deepen your understanding and share with other people who are also helping to co-create and cultivate the new seriousness and new playfulness of contemporary spirituality.

02 May 2021Greg Kaminsky: Gnosis and the Tantric Preliminaries01:51:22

Greg Kaminski is a man of gravity, learning, and dedication. In our wonderful two hour conversation, the creator of the podcast ‘Occult of Personality’ and author of the new book ‘Pronaos: Reflections on the Preliminary Practices of Buddhist Tantra from a Western Perspective’, shared something fantastic:  that a particular series of preliminary practices in Buddhist Tantra known as ngondro is now openly available to people in the west, in glorious and poetic english—in full and unabashed form.  These practices, which are usually associated with traditional Tibetan Buddhism and thought to be too arcane, too difficult, and too ‘eastern’, can now be done by westerners.  Just ping brother Greg and he will set you up here:

https://www.ngondro.org/

https://www.tanagana.com/welcome

Ok, let me slow down here.  These practices are hard and they might fuck you up, Greg tells me.  They are not for everybody.  On the other hand, they are extraordinarily beautiful and transformative.

Intro music: Beautiful Machines, by Andrew Sweeny

John Vervaeke is a professor at the University of Toronto and the creator of the popular online YouTube Series ‘Awakening from The Meaning Crisis’, which is a rich feast of cognitive science, philosophy, religion, and the history of ideas.  What makes Vervaeke special in my opinion is the breadth of his work, but his courage descend the ivory tower and talk to people ‘on the street’—and to exemplify his ideas.  His hero is Socrates, and he embodies the living dialogue and courage that Socrates represents.

I’ve been writing about his series on Medium in an attempt to translate the heady stuff into plain English and converse and sometimes critique him, without dumbing him down—which is a difficult but rewarding task.    As well as being a remarkable thinker, John is a bodhisattva also a ‘real mensch’—or a person of great integrity and hospitality—and it was a huge pleasure to talk to him.

Some topics we covered:  4 kinds of knowing and rationality; Folk psychology; Language of training and explaining; Memory Love and Rationality; Marrying rationality to wisdom;Ian MaGilchrist; Lingering and wandering; Being in time/Heidegger; Meditation, contemplation, and Dialogos; “But where the danger is also grows the saving power”; Critique of Empiricism and Romanticism; The meaning of science Enlightenment and the Bodhisattva; Binding the enlightenment project to humanity

27 Jul 2019Andrew Sweeny and Stephen Lewis on Rudolf Steiner: The spirit of the machine01:00:16

This is the 5th in a series of talks with Stephen Lewis, in which we discuss Rudolf Steiner and his theories of Lucifer and Ahriman, among other things.

Podcast version can be heard on Anchor: https://anchor.fm/podcast-c709ee4

Stephen Lewis is owns an organic bakery in Newfoundland, Canada, is a singer-songwriter, and real philosopher—he is also a bit of a mystic by my estimation. He has all kinds of theories about art, economics, sex and society,  which you will find are completely unique.  I've been talking to him since the late 90's about all kinds of stuff, and he's definitely one most acutely and deeply intelligent people I know.

Stephen's music can be heard here:  https://slewis1.bandcamp.com/album/anthems-for-a-failed-state

Join our poetry Salon and Open Mic: https://parallax-media-network.mn.co/share/5hSLvQW7bNszFGEo?utm_source=manual About Joe Ross Author of over fifteen books of poetry, Joe Ross was born in Pennsylvania and graduated magna cum laude from the Honors Program at Temple University in Philadelphia. He soon moved thereafter to Washington, D.C. where he wrote his first book, Guards of the Heart, consisting of four plays written in poetic form. In Washington D.C., he worked at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was extraordinarily active in the cultural scene of that city. He served as the President of the Board of the Poetry Committee at The Folger Shakespeare Library from 1994-1997 and as the Literary Editor of the arts bi-monthly The Washington Review from 1991-1997. He also Co-founded and directed the In Your Ear poetry reading series at the District of Columbia Arts Center. His poetry reveals close links with the "Language" poets but seeks in its often disjunctive structure, puns, and linguistic riddles, to be accessible to a large audience. Many of Ross's poems are subliminally political while concerned with love and interrelations between individuals. The American Voyage, in particular, concerns the idealism of American culture and its failures as a culture to live up to those ideals. 04 Jun 2024The Joy of Movies with Robert Gray - Summer of Imagination course Starts June 1501:01:02

A conversation about movies, and about our upcoming course:

PARALLAX MOVIE CLUB ‘24: SUMMER OF IMAGINATION
For more information or to sign up:

https://www.parallax-media.com/courses/course-parallax-movie-club-24-summer-of-imagination-wf6cd About the course:

Art and film expand our horizons, transport us out of our mundane, ordinary lives to places greater than heaven, more dreadful than hell, into a war-torn dystopia or a world full of romance, hope, and possibility. Join us on an eclectic journey exploring four powerful films and how their aesthetic, philosophical, and existential elements offer insights into the human condition, into ourselves. Each week we will explore and engage with a different film, unpacking the emotional and psychological factors, celebrating the technical craftsmanship and distinct storytelling, and answer questions about anything and everything related to the films.

Andrew Sweeny will begin the Parallax Movie Club: Summer of Imagination with american classic Fight Club, appropriately about reclaiming their identities and transcending the boredom and predictability of corporate life, escaping into a full blown anarchist movement named Project Mayhem.

Layman Pascal will host the second session with David Lynch’s Fire Walk with Me. Fire Walk with me is as controversial as Layman, receiving boos at the Cannes Film Festival for it’s shocking, controversial use of imagery and narrative. In Layman’s words “‘Fire Walk with Me’ has some of the most stark and disturbing commentary on abusive and violence in America, but also a truly spiritual emergence of transcendent goodness.” What’s not to like!

Robert Gray will reverse the darkness in the third session with Japanese Film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, as two bumbling military deserters are tricked into helping a princess and her most heroic general escape death and bring the princess to safety. One of Kurosawa’s most well received films, the Hidden Fortress is a great introduction to on of the best directors of all times and a dramatic tale of power, deception, folly, and triumph - oh, and it inspired George Lucas’ star wars (and is much better imo), so if you like adventure and fantasy films, this will be a great time for you!

John Vervaeke will take us into the heroic fantasy of The Fall (2006). Critically acclaimed and then virtually lost to the internet due to poor distribution and lack of streaming, The Fall imaginatively challenges the art of storytelling with exotic locations (shot in 24 countries over 4 years of filming), stunning arrays of characters (over 1000 actors participated in the filming), and dramatic narrative as life and fantasy blur for the characters - mystics, warriors, explosive experts, and even a monkey - who grapple with the ups and downs of their complex inner and outer lives.

10 May 2023Love or Die #1: A conversation series with Marc Gafni01:30:17

Hosted by Andrew Sweeny

The first of a monthly series of discussions, Love or Die, in which Marc elaborates on what he has called 'The global intimacy crisis' and 'CosmoErotic Humanism'. How can we rewrite the source code of the present epoch and create a new story? The stakes are high. It’s Love or Die!

Dr. Marc Gafni is a visionary thinker, social activist, and passionate philosopher. He is known for his “source code teachings,” including Unique Self theory, the Five Selves, the Amorous Cosmos, A Politics of Evolutionary Love, A Return to Eros and Digital Intimacy. He is author of over twenty-five books, including the award-winning Your Unique Self: The Radical Path to Personal Enlightenment. He holds a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University, as well as Orthodox rabbinic ordination.

He teaches on the cutting edge of philosophy and spirit in the West, with the aim of participating in the articulation of what Dr. Gafni together with Dr. Zak Stein and colleagues are calling CosmoErotic Humanism. At the core of CosmoErotic Humanism is what Dr. Gafni and Dr. Stein are calling ‘First Principles and First Values,’ Anthro-Ontology and a “Universal Grammar of Value.” This shared story rooted in First Principles and First Values can then serve as the matrix for a global ethos for a global civilization.

Dr. Gafni is the Co-Founder and Co-President of the Office for the Future, the Center for World Religion and Philosophy and the Foundation for Conscious Evolution. At the core of their shared missions is the articulation and delivery into culture of a Great Library - in multiple forms - which participates in evolving the source code of consciousness and culture in response to the Meta Crisis.
