Adam shares takeaways from the CIRM User Group, where automation in label printing is improving efficiency for packaging manufacturers. Meanwhile, the team debates the endless war between BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) and PE (polyethylene) labels—why some are recyclable and others aren’t, and what that means for brands looking to make sustainable choices.Of course, the show wouldn’t be complete without some sarcasm. The team takes a jab at the idea that turning plastic waste into jellyfish art is a real solution. Spoiler alert: It’s not. While recycling and repurposing are crucial, we can’t “art” our way out of the plastic crisis. Instead, the focus needs to be on improving recycling infrastructure, material choices, and the circular economy. At the end of the day, the key takeaway is simple: Labels matter. The right material choice can mean the difference between a product that contributes to the landfill and one that integrates into a sustainable future. But one thing is for sure—labels are not packaging. And Adam is tired of saying it.Tune in to hear the full debate, get insider insights from the packaging world, and maybe—just maybe—learn why Superman is still MIA when it comes to solving our plastic problems.Mentions:CERM User Group -https://cerm.netSpec Right Summit -https://specright.comHow2Recycle -https://how2recycle.infoIDP Direct -https://idpdirect.comJoin packaging industry experts Evelio Mattos, Cory Connors, and Adam Peek each week on the “Packaging Today Show” LIVE!Unpack the world of packaging design, manufacturing, and sustainability. This engaging episode of "Packaging Today" with Evelio Mattos and Adam Peek delves deep into the complex world of packaging, particularly focusing on the extended producer responsibility (EPR) and its implications. As they humorously navigate through the uncertainties and challenges posed by rapidly evolving packaging laws in the U.S. and beyond, both hosts explore the intersection of sustainability, cost, and innovation required to meet upcoming regulations.

In a lively dialogue that spans from potential changes in packaging materials to the economic implications of EPR, Evelio and Adam provide a thorough exploration of how these laws may lead to unintended effects like inflation or shifts in consumer behavior. Using examples like milk and microbrew packaging, they discuss how companies might respond to these regulatory challenges by examining alternative materials or embracing new technology. Their discussion underscores a cautious optimism that EPR can be a catalyst for positive change if executed with precision and stakeholder engagement.

Evelio Mattos, Adam Peek, and Cory Connors delve into the intricate world of coffee packaging. They provide insightful discussions on two types of packaging—paperboard and plastic—and weigh their benefits and drawbacks. The panelists critically evaluate Target's private label coffee packaging and a stand-up pouch from Colombia, exploring aspects of recyclability, usability, and design efficiency.

Throughout the discussion, key themes emerge around sustainable packaging solutions, with an emphasis on understanding materials and consumer habits. • "We are enamored with the possibility that something can happen, and then we make possibility into certainty." — Adam Peek
    • "If that's a single-use, it's the worst. But if you can keep putting grounds of coffee in there and hot water, then it brews and filters out the grounds." — Adam Peek

28 Feb 2025Hidden Cost of Sustainability: What Every Brand Needs to Know00:11:13

Are Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) taxes actually funding better recycling systems, or are they just another way for governments to extract cash from businesses without results? And how should US brands prepare for their own EPR regulations?

In this episode, Adam Peek breaks down the latest developments in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees and their impact on UK retailers. With Marks & Spencer’s CEO calling these new taxes a retail raid, we explore whether these fees are truly driving better recycling infrastructure or simply draining businesses of resources. Adam also dives into how UK retailers expect to pay £2 billion in EPR fees, and what that could mean for jobs, wages, and consumer prices.

For US brands, this is a wake-up call—EPR regulations are rolling out state by state, and companies need to get ahead of data tracking, reporting, and compliance before they face similar economic pressures. 16 Dec 2024Elon Musk: Unpacking Recycling Myths00:37:11

Delve deep into the complexities of recycling and sustainability within the packaging industry. The trio discusses the impacts of current recycling practices on global waste management, dissecting recent statements made by public figures like Elon Musk, and exploring the merit of claims made in John Stossel's recycling critique.

Throughout the discussion, the hosts engage in a thoughtful exchange about the value and challenges of recycling practices in today's society. They address issues such as consumer indifference, the effectiveness of modern landfills, and the economic factors hampering efficient recycling, especially with plastics. As they dissect the broader sustainability discourse, the conversation highlights the technological strides and economic incentives needed to enhance recycling efficacy through potential policy implementations like extended producer responsibility (EPR).

    • Economic Incentives and Recycling: The current economic model for recycling, particularly plastics, presents challenges due to high costs that are often offset by subsidies, revealing a need for economic restructuring towards efficient recycling practices.
    • Consumer Responsibility: There is a notable gap in consumer incentives for recycling, pointing to the need for better awareness and educational initiatives to enhance recycling engagement from individuals.
    • Industrial Recycling Dominance: Bulk of successful recycling occurs at commercial and industrial levels as opposed to residential or consumer levels, highlighting a potential area for growth and improvement.
    • Technological Advances in Waste Management: Modern landfills and recycling facilities are utilizing advanced technologies, yet there's still vast room for improvement in sorting and processing capabilities, especially concerning different material types.
    • Potential of EPR Policies: Extended producer responsibility policies have the potential to align economic and environmental goals by ensuring producers bear more responsibility for the lifecycle of their products.
  • "Recycling has become by and large an industrial mechanism." - Adam Peek
  • "I think the problem that [is] positively, I think this points out is that there is not value in recycling a lot of other materials." - Adam Peek
  • "Let's hope this extended producer responsibility funding will encourage better MRFs, higher tech, better quality sorting." - Cory Connors
  • "We have a consumption and waste problem. And up until now, brands have not had to bear the weight of that issue." - Adam Peek
  • "As a consumer, I'm going to pay more and be taxed on it to try to support recycling." - Evelio Mattos

April Fool's Day 2025 brought a slew of packaging pranks that blurred the lines between jest and genuine innovation. As the packaging world becomes increasingly saturated with these annual jokes, one must wonder: have we reached the tipping point where these pranks no longer pack a punch?

Take, for instance, Rainwater's audacious rebranding to Cool S Bottling Co. Nostalgia sells, but slapping a doodle from every teenager's notebook onto a bottle? Bold move. Then there's IQ Pop's antibiotic soda—because nothing says refreshment like a hint of penicillin. Grove Co. decided that size does matter by introducing a line of products so miniature, you'd need a magnifying glass to find them.
