After co-founding his animation studio Cartoon Saloon, Tomm has directed, written, produced, and designed multiple film and television projects including “Puffin Rock”, “The Prophet” and “The Breadwinner.” Ross is a conceptual artist and Art director, and has worked on multiple shorts and films, including “Paranoman”, and has collaborated with Tomm on “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea”.

We discuss behind the scenes stories from production, the inspiration behind this beautiful story, and what it's like to co-direct a film as childhood friends.

Happy Studios Paying Actors What They Deserve Day! Hopefully this is the beginning of a robust season of actors campaigning for their films, starting with a few that Nick and Sophia are here to discuss today. Firstly, Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s latest stylized film that details the complicated relationship between Elvis and his only spouse, Priscilla, and was adapted from her biography. Then, Alexander Payne’s crowdpleaser, The Holdovers, a melancholy yet hilarious jaunt through the holidays (24:23).

With the Gotham Awards nominations recently announced, Sophia and Nick go through the top nominees and some of their favorites before discussing how they feel about the Oscar host news update. Then onto some recently released films that have gotten the attention of critics and audiences alike. First is one of Netflix’s latest, 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (14:12). This worthy adaptation of the classic war novel proves a strong technical player and one with potential as Germany’s submission in International Feature.

Then onto Martin McDonagh’s meditative fable, 'The Banshees of Inisherin' (30:34). This already award-winning film has proved itself a strong contender as it continues to mystify and beguile audiences. Last but not least is another of Netflix’s grand players, 'Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths' (56:28). In Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest and most personal epic, he contemplates life, death, and the beyond. Check local listings for showtimes before its streaming release on December 15th.

Some of the big fall festival premieres look to dazzle audiences as they hit a wide release this month. On this first episode in a series of 2021 Oscars Category Predictions, Nick and Sophia discuss the biggest contenders for Best Animated Feature. With Soul (1:57) and Wolfwalkers (14:46) as the frontrunners, are they already able to crown a clear winner? Will they also be nominated in other categories, like Best Original Screenplay or Best Picture?

Next, they share their thoughts on hot animated dads and the last film they saw in theaters before lockdown, Onward. Will it take the third slot and lead Pixar to its first double nomination (21:45)? Finally, they run through a number of wacky and creative animated films—from Netflix’s Over the Moon to the early VOD hit, Trolls: World Tour to decide who has the best potential to fill the two remaining slots (27:18).

Welcome back to Season Five! To start off with a BANG, Sophia and Nick tackle one of cinema’s greatest sequels, The Godfather Part II. Coppola returned to adapt this second film only a few months after The Godfather took home Best Picture, but this time he had demands and drama to deal with. They discuss all of this and more, including a run-through of the movie’s best scenes, their favorite shots and quotes, and how the beautiful crosscutting transforms characters and scenarios to magnify the world established in the first film. Even with 11 nominations, was the movie snubbed? You bet! Listen as they debate those, too.

Oscar stats are plentiful but the one where 'Terms of Endearment' and 'Amadeus' won back to back Best Picture and Director awards (among many others) and are the last films to have two lead acting nominees with one of them winning, debunking the split vote myth, may be the coolest. After breaking down the times this happened in Oscar history (1:54), Sophia and Nick get emotional with 'Terms of Endearment' (10:16), asking if The Academy got it right choosing Shirley MacLaine over Debra Winger. Then onto 'Amadeus,' an electric opus showcasing F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce as master composers consumed by their craft (44:49). Grab some fava beans and a nice Chianti to help Sophia and Nick celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Silence of the Lambs”.

First, they travel back to the 64th Academy Awards to share their thoughts on how the film accomplished what only two other films have in history, winning The Big 5 at The Oscars (11:23). Next, they dive into the film and discuss some of their favorite chilling scenes (25:28). They also get very close to doing character impressions when they share their favorite quotes (44:07).

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster in the film, but it turns out other actors came very close to being in these iconic roles (46:09). Finally, they share some of their favorite fun facts from the movie (52:58) and discuss the complicated legacy of Buffalo Bill (57:59).

Thirty-nine light-years from Earth, crew members aboard the cargo ship Nostromo take one small step onto an unknown planet, leading to an endless number of giant disasters for mankind. So begins the interstellar saga that sends its heroine, Ellen Ripley, to hell and back, with corporate-fueled alien adventures continuing to this day. It’s no wonder Alien remains one of the all-time greatest science fiction films 45 years after Ridley Scott and his innovative and imaginative collaborators birthed such chilling beauty.
