Anyone who spends time in the outdoors, in backyards, in the woods, fields and even urban cities should be concerned about Lyme disease. Why? Because according to many reports, Lyme disease caused by ticks, increasingly threaten the health of people all over the world. Most noteworthy, is over the past two decades, seven new tick-borne germs that can cause illness have been identified. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the number of reported cases of Lyme disease in the United States, has tripled. The states with highest incidence of this disease is #1 Maine, followed by Vermont, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, West Virginia, New York, and Virginia. Tick-borne and mosquito diseases are also on the rise in other states like Florida. They have seen a 77% increase in tick-borne disease infections. But, it’s not just in the United States. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, say ticks are abundant in woodlands all across Europe from early spring to late autumn. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe along with Lyme borreliosis. Canada has also seen a higher risk of acquiring Lyme disease. Some patients are reporting that doctors in Canada are not aware of how prevalent it is, making it difficult to diagnose early. Lyme disease has spread to Asia and around the world. According to Popular Science, Lyme disease is thriving because warmer temperatures are making cold places suitable habitats for ticks. One study predicts the incidence of this tick-borne disease will rise around 21% by mid-century because of climate change. And higher temperatures spur ticks to venture farther in search of hosts like deer, squirrels, and mice. Today’s podcast is devoted to teaching you the symptoms and treatment of Lyme disease, and how to protect yourself. Thank you so much for being here! 07 Jul 2017 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #22: What Everyone Needs to Know About Intermittent Fasting w/ Dr. Joel Kahn | 00:57:34
"During the fasting-mimicking diet, cortisone is produced and that initiates a killing of autoimmune cells. This process also leads to the production of new healthy cells.”
New research concludes that a diet mimicking the effects of fasting should be further examined as a treatment for auto-immune diseases like multiple sclerosis, cancer, heart disease, memory, longevity, weight-loss and type-2 diabetes. I was introduced to intermittent fasting during lectures from some of the leading doctors in plant-based nutrition on the 2017 Holistic Holiday at Sea. What I learned was intermittent fasting appeared to be a new exciting, healthy approach to eating that could benefit anyone suffering from many chronic diseases like multiple sclerosis and even cancer. I was skeptical because I dislike any restrictive diets that depend on calorie counting, but don’t let the word fasting fool you. What I discovered is that there are many ways to practice intermittent fasting and it is more about calorie reduction than depriving yourself of food. This podcast is what you need to know before you start skipping meals. Today's guest, Dr. Joel Kahn, is one of the world's top cardiologists and he believes that plant-based nutrition is the most powerful source of preventative medicine. He also believes in the power of intermittent fasting. Please join me and Dr. Kahn to discuss how intermittent fasting can benefit your health, your longevity, and even your memory. Learn why intermittent fasting affects your stem cells and why stem cells are important. Last but not least, discover the different ways you can practice healthy intermittent fasting. 03 Nov 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #65 - The Dangers of Mixing Medications | 00:22:56
Combined drug intoxication (CDI), also known as multiple drug intake, is an unnatural cause of human death. This shouldn’t be confused with drug overdose because CDI is due to the simultaneous use of multiple drugs. CDI is becoming more common in recent years because mental health problems are on the rise, and many people are taking some kind of anti-anxiety or depression medication. What many of these people don’t know is that these prescribed medications can interact badly with common over-the-counter medications or other prescribed drugs. Not only that, cough syrups, antihistamines, cold, and flu medications can be utterly confusing. Often people are using the same ingredients just in different packaging, thinking they’re different when in reality they have the same ingredients. Today’s podcast is dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of mixing medications and thinking twice about what you put in your body. We are also heading into flu season so before you reach for your go-to medication, make sure you listen to this podcast. Above all, to be safe, read the active ingredients list before you buy any over-the-counter medication, and if you are on prescribed medication, talk to the pharmacist before combining any medications. 23 Jul 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #41: Interview with Dr. John McDougall | 00:53:12
"The Starch Solution is a diet based on starch. Yes, let me say that again, it is a diet based on starch" “Dr. John McDougall is the dean of medical practitioners in nutrition-centered medicine- because of his incredible accomplishments, knowledge, and courage to stand up for what he believes. Thousands of his patients know him as an icon. When you read this book, you will too.” These days, you mainly hear people recommending reducing carbs, particularly starchy carbohydrates. But Dr. John McDougall has experienced tremendous success with his chronically ill patients by emphasizing a vegan starch based diet. If you have never heard of Dr. John McDougall, he has been a pioneer in the plant-based wellness world for many years. As far back as the 1970s, Dr. McDougall began developing the starch based diet. It all began when he was practicing medicine on a sugar plantation in Hawaii. He observed the declining health of families who traded their starch based diet from their native Asian countries and began eating a typical Western diet of red meat, oils, and processed foods. The result was the Asian immigrants began to experience serious Western diseases like type-2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease which were unheard of in their native countries. So, Dr. McDougall began treating his patients with whole plant-based foods that were free of meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and oil. The diet was approximately 80% percent complex carbohydrates, 12 percent protein, and 8 percent fat. Spices and small amounts of salt and sugar were added for flavor. What Dr. McDougall discovered is that a plant-based starch based diet helped his patients lose weight and reverse their chronic disease. In 2002, Dr. McDougall began the McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, California. The McDougall program is a three or 10-day residential treatment program which features his plant-based, low fat, starch based diet. In June 2013, Dr. McDougall released his best selling book "The Starch Solution," which has sold over a million copies. His partner in life and wife Mary contributed recipes for the book. The "Starch Solution" is based on a simple swap; fueling your body primarily with carbohydrates rather than proteins and fats. Dr. McDougall's legion of followers says they have lost weight, boosted their energy and reversed their chronic disease like type-2 diabetes and heart disease. Hope you enjoy today's fascinating conversation with best selling physician and nutrition expert, Dr. John McDougall. Dr. McDougall's Resources: Ordinary Vegan Resources: *** Many people in the wellness world are turning to cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD Oil, for its powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects. 28 Mar 2016 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #7: Is Your Dinner A Threat To The Environment | 00:22:51
Don't feel guilty. Most people don't understand the connection between food and climate change. But how we feel about climate change in the future is very important right now. Because it plays a large part in what's going to happen to our planet next. Here are some facts: New research warns that without radical changes to our diets, the food industry alone is likely to cause an 80% increase in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These greenhouse gas emissions cause a man-made greenhouse effect that traps us inside and changes the temperature of the earth's surface. Shifting the temperature of the earth even a couple of degrees can throw an entire ecosystem into chaos and create extreme weather events. Learn how you can fight for our planet's environment beginning today. It is easier than you think! We also share a decadent and delicious plant-based whipped cream topping. You'll never want the whipped can cow's milk stuff again.

20 Jun 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #59-Wabi-Sabi: Embracing Imperfection In A Vegan Diet | 00:18:19
Today, I want to encourage the pursuit of imperfection. It's called wabi-sabi, and accepting imperfection is the fundamental principal. That does not mean to embrace failure. It means to embrace learning and to be willing not to get it entirely right. “Wabi means simplicity, humility, and living in tune with nature." It describes someone content with little and makes the most of whatever they have. “Sabi” refers to transience, beauty, and authenticity of age." The term has its roots in Buddhism but eventually evolved into a distinctly Japanese ideal. The Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi offers an inspiring new way to look at your entire life. It celebrates cracks, crevices and rot and all other marks that time and weather leave behind. So what does this have to do with a vegan diet? Because eating vegan is not about being perfect. And I never want to perpetuate that. There is no such thing as a perfect human or a perfect vegan. It is time to celebrate and accept the beauty of imperfection of a vegan diet through wabi-sabi. Always remember; when nothing is certain, everything is possible.Hope you enjoy today’s podcast. A big thanks goes to Nuzest Clean Lean Protein for sponsoring today’s podcast. 31 Mar 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #74-Best Foods For Respiratory System Health | 00:24:51
Did you know what you eat can benefit your lung function and improve your respiratory system health? Today we explore food and exercises to improve conditions in the air passageways to make your lungs stronger. We often don't consider the important role our lungs play in keeping us well. It is not until we experience problems breathing that we take notice. Recently there has been a lot of attention about lung function and the respiratory system. The new Covid-19 virus attacks the lungs and researchers are trying to understand why. But until they figure it out, we need to protect ourselves as best we can. Most people don't know this, but lung function starts to decline at age 30. After the age of 35, breathing becomes gradually more difficult. The respiratory system does two critical things. It brings oxygen into our bodies, which we need for our cells to function properly. It also helps us get rid of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide must be removed from the bloodstream before it reaches harmful levels. When the air sacs become inflamed, we are unable to get enough oxygen to the bloodstream and it reduces the body's ability to get rid of carbon dioxide. This can cause severe pneumonia. Lung and respiratory disease are some of the most common medical conditions in the world. The goal of today’s podcast is to get your respiratory system and lungs in tip-top shape to reduce your risk of severe infection. Whether you're giving up animal products for your health, animal rights or climate change, you may need assistance. Today we discuss some tried and tested vegan tips to help this process go more smoothly. Here are a few problems we explore. Eating out or not knowing what to feed your non-vegan family can be challenging. These vegan tips should help you survive as a vegan in a multi-vore household. Leading a busy lifestyle, eating out and trying to find quick plant-based options are also addressed. As more and more fast food restaurants offer vegan selections, the simpler it becomes. Learn your options in today's podcast. Additionally, it is not always going to be easy, but remember that “straying maps the path.” From the inspiring wisdom of Rumi's poem “The Sight Of A Soul.” My interpretation of that poem is until we stray from the path we will never know what is waiting for us. Furthermore, change is scary. But Rumi also says “when you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you.” And big changes, like eating plant-based, bring big positive consequences! I hope today's vegan tips help you begin or continue on your path towards veganism. Other topics discussed today include the April 2019 supplement study from researchers from Tuft's University. 29 Sep 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #64: Fat Burning Foods To Help Lose Weight | 00:20:42
In Podcast #63 "How Not To Diet", Dr. Greger discussed fat burning foods to help lose weight. Today's podcast is a follow-up to a few of the foods he mentioned. First, we discuss which foods contribute to weight loss and why it works. For example, there are certain foods that increase energy expenditure. Meaning, they have metabolic boosting properties. Metabolism is the process by which our body converts what we eat and drink into energy. Often when we diet, our metabolism slows down because we need less energy to maintain our body. Having a high metabolic rate not only burns calories but also gives us more energy. There are also ingredients in foods that increase fat oxidation, which can increase fat burning by as much as 10-15%. Furthermore, many scientific studies now show when a person adds these fat burning foods to their diet, they can lose weight permanently. You can learn more information in Dr. Michael Greger's new book "How Not To Diet." Thanks for listening. Please support today's sponsor Osea Malibu. Starting a vegan business is not for the faint of heart. Building a new business can be scary and risky, but every successful entrepreneur will tell you that it’s worth it. Today’s podcast is part 1 of a vegan business series focused on plant-based entrepreneurs. You might be saying why now? Because the coronavirus is sparking a plant-based sales explosion, and this could be a good time to turn your passion into a vegan business. 08 Nov 2017 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #26: How To Lose Weight By Changing When You Eat | 00:24:39
New research suggests that when to eat a meal plays a significant role in predicting weight loss or gain. I am not a big fan of counting calories on a plant-based diet because I believe a healthy vegan diet is a path to lifelong weight control. But the idea of when to eat your calories could make sense for some people who haven't been able to lose weight on a plant-based diet or have problems sleeping. Today I share with you a lot of research I have been doing on weight loss and weight gain, and it has been fascinating. What I have discovered is that that there is a science behind when to eat to lose weight. Have you ever noticed that you tend to feel energized and drowsy around the same times every day? This is your circadian rhythm at work. Your circadian rhythm is a 24-hour clock that is running in the background of your brain. It is also know as the sleep-wake cycle. In the last 15 years, there's been a wealth of evidence suggesting that abnormal or impaired circadian rhythms can bring an increased risk for many illnesses including cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, obesity and even emotional dysregulation. Find out when to eat your meals to maximize weight loss, sleep better and decrease your risk for chronic disease in this podcast. There is a lot to learn and I hope you enjoy today's conversation. Here is the link to the Pumpkin Bread with Oats and Walnuts recipe. Learn more about what to eat on a plant-based diet here. 09 Feb 2021 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #95-Alcohol and Cancer Risk - Should You Be Concerned? | 00:39:25
In today's podcast, Dr. Noelle LoConte discusses the relationship between alcohol and cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, alcohol use is one of the most preventable risk factors for cancer. They further state that alcohol use accounts for about 6% of all cancers and 4% of all cancer deaths. For many cancers, the more alcohol you drink, the higher your cancer risk. But for some types of cancers, in particular breast cancer, consuming even small amounts of alcohol can increase the risk. Furthermore, BreastCancer.org warns women that as little as three alcoholic drinks per week give you a 15% higher risk of breast cancer compared to non-drinkers. Most people don't realize that tipping back a beer, wine, or a cocktail could increase their cancer risk.Noelle LoConte, M.D., specializes in the relationship between alcohol and cancer. She is the first author on the American Society of Clinical Oncology policy statement on alcohol and cancer and has served on the ASCO prevention Committee. Dr. LoConte is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center in Madison, Wisconsin. She completed medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, did her internal medicine internship at UW, and completed her internal medicine residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Her research and outreach interests are in cancer control across the cancer continuum, and she is the principal investigator (PI) for the Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Control Program. 06 Dec 2017 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #29: How Not To Die with Dr. Michael Greger | 00:34:36
They say the secret to happiness is helping others. If that is true, Dr. Michael Greger must be one of the happiest men in the world. The great lengths that he goes to help people understand the connection between nutrition and chronic disease is unrivaled. If you are not familiar with Dr. Michael Greger, here is some background. A graduate of Cornell and Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Greger has been published in a vast amount of scientific journals, testified before Congress and lectures at countless symposiums. He was even an expert witness in the infamous Oprah Winfrey meat defamation lawsuit. In his downtime, he can be found constructing policy initiatives as Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture for the Humane Society. He also wrote a best selling book called “How Not To Die” which explains why the top 15 causes of death in the USA can be treated, prevented and even reversed with plant-based nutrition. He also runs the popular website NutritionFacts.org, a nonprofit, science-based public service providing free daily videos and articles on the latest in nutrition research. NutritionFacts.org features hundreds of impeccably researched and easily understandable videos that cover every facet of nutrition and health. In the next week or so he will be releasing yet another book called the “How Not To Die Cookbook" which has already been named the best cookbook of the year by the New York Times. Oh by the way 100% of fees and proceeds he receives from speaking and book sales are donated to charity. Another powerful testament to Dr. Greger’s love of helping people get well. And obviously, Dr. Greger is a very busy man, so I felt very honored that he took some time to stop by the Ordinary Vegan podcast. Specifics covered today include breast cancer, soy consumptions, Parkinson's disease, prostate cancer, suicide, mental health, and auto-immune disease among others. 16 Aug 2016 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #13: Longevity - Food Secrets of People With The Longest Lifespan | 00:20:56
We can consume foods that can heal us or we can consume foods that can kill us. Once we know the difference, we are on the road to a healthy, happy, long life. Today's podcast is devoted to longevity and some of the foods that have played a role in the cultures of people around the world who enjoy healthy lives into their 80s, 90s, and some well into their 100s. Listen to today's podcast to unlock the secrets of longevity from the longest-living people in the world: Okinawans. No only do they enjoy the world's highest life expectancy; they stay active well into their 80s and 90s. They also have one of the lowest rates of dementia in the world. Food is the #1 contributor to their longevity, and you may be surprised by what they eat. Next, we visit the Island of Sardinia where scientists have been trying for years to discover the secrets of why Sardinia is the home to the longest-lived men. A study was done called AKeA, an acronym for "A Kent Annos", a traditional toast in the Sardinian culture that means "may you live to be 100 years old." That study found that their diet was crucial to their longevity, and nearly half of their diet comprises one food group. Lastly, we visit Loma Linda, California. What sets Loma Linda apart from the rest of the country is that it is home to a large population of Seventh-Day Adventists. Studies have found that Adventists have the Nation's lowest rates of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity because of their diet. We also cook up some longevity muffins in Ordinary Vegan's kitchen. Here is the recipe. Thank you for listening. To get more Ordinary Vegan content sent directly to your device as they become available, you can subscribe here or on iTunes. 27 Apr 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #76-Breathing Exercises with Patrick McKeown | 00:46:10
“My mission is to empower people to take control of their own health, well-being and fitness using simple breathing exercises proven to improve body oxygenation”. Most people take their breathing for granted. Why shouldn't they? They have been doing it since birth without any effort. But my guest, Patrick McKeown, takes breathing very seriously, and he is convinced that breathing correctly can change your life. Patrick McKeown has written seven books on improving your body's oxygen use. His latest book, "The Oxygen Advantage," is a simple yet revolutionary approach to improving your body's oxygen use. Furthermore, his book explains why chronic over-breathing can contribute to problems such as anxiety, asthma, fatigue, insomnia, obesity, and heart problems. Today Patrick shares why one of the biggest obstacles to better health and fitness is how we breathe. Also, he shares breathing exercises to help increase endurance, weight loss, and improve cardio-fitness. I am very happy that Patrick was willing to share his expertise in lung health, breathing, and oxygen use. Because, as we all know, Covid-19 is a respiratory disease. The virus affects cells in the airways, from the nose and throat down to the lungs. Therefore, learning techniques to help us breathe better during this outbreak is more crucial than ever. Please welcome Patrick McKeown to today's podcast. Free Buteyko Children's Breathing Program
27 May 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #78-The Health Risks Of Social Isolation & Loneliness | 00:22:31
Experts have long been concerned about loneliness, and now social isolation has made the epidemic worse. According to a 2018 national survey by Cigna, loneliness levels have reached an all-time high, with nearly half of 20,000 US adults reporting they sometimes or always feel alone. Sadly, one of our youngest generations, Generation Z, is feeling the most significant impacts of loneliness. In an analysis conducted by The Pew Research Center, one-in-ten Americans say they feel lonely or isolated from those around them. Unsurprisingly, frequent loneliness is linked to dissatisfaction with one's family and social life. And lonely people often crave human contact, but their state of mind makes it more difficult to form connections with people. So America had a chronic loneliness problem before COVID-19. Consequently, now with social isolation, we all find ourselves experiencing the risk of feeling lonely. Indeed loneliness is a normal human experience, but feeling lonely and isolated for too long can harm our physical and mental health. A Newcastle University study linked loneliness to a 30% increase for the risk of heart disease. Another study done by the Florida State University College of Medicine says loneliness is associated with a 40% increase in the risk of dementia. Other studies have indicated that loneliness is a precursor of cognitive decline in general. As a social species, humans need a safe, secure social circle to survive and thrive. Overcoming Loneliness In Social IsolationSo today's podcast is dedicated to overcoming loneliness while you are practicing social isolation along with:

15 Sep 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #86-: Reversing Diabetes & Inspiring Change with BP Eric Adams | 00:35:42
Today I sit down with Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams. Eric is in the running to be the next mayor of New York City and he is using his platform to spark real change and spread the plant-based message. Here is some background. At 15 years old, Eric Adams was beaten by police. The traumatizing incident inspired him to become a police officer to help reform New York City policing from the inside. He co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, and after 22 years on the force, retired as a captain. Eric served in the New York Senate for seven years and was elected Brooklyn Borough President in 2013. He is now serving his second term. In 2016 when Eric was out of the country, he experienced stomach pains and feared it was colon cancer. When he returned to America, he went to the doctor and found out that his colon was fine, but that he had an ulcer and was in the late stages of type-2 diabetes. This caused him to lose sight in his left eye and was slowly losing it in his right eye, making him legally blind. He even experienced nerve damage in his hands and feet from diabetes. Eric went and spoke to multiple doctors like Dr. Esselstyn, who told him to stop eating processed foods, dairy, and meat. After three weeks of following their recommendations, Eric’s vision cleared up from diabetes. After three months, his diabetes went into remission, and his ulcer went away. He dropped 35 pounds and realized the power of food and how fast your body responds to you giving it the proper nutrients it needs to function. But this conversation isn't just about Eric's transformation, it is also about how he is using his position to encourage New York to explore plant-based eating and creating new food policies. Be prepared to be inspired by Eric Adams. You can pre-order Eric Adams new book "Healthy At Last: A Plant-based Approach to Preventing Diabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses" on Amazon. 14 Oct 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #88-Soup Enhancing Tips To Liven Up Your Vegan Soups | 00:19:54
Several studies that have tested the effects of consuming soup on a regular basis found that routinely eating soup can reduce energy intake, enhance satiety, and promote weight loss. Vegan soups are especially satiating because high fiber vegetables are high volume foods. This is called energy density. Energy density is the number of calories in a particular weight of food. It means you can have satisfying portions of low-energy-dense foods with a relatively low-calorie content. Such high fiber foods like broccoli, squash, peas, cabbage, spinach and sweet potatoes are high volume foods. They add bulk to your meals and fill up your stomach without a lot of calories. They also keep you full longer. And vegan soups don't have to be boring. There are a lot of ways to liven them up, so today's podcast is dedicated to vegan soup enhancing tips along with:

27 Feb 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #33: How Overfishing Impacts Humanity & Risks of Eating Fish | 00:24:52
Americans alone, increased their seafood consumption to 15.5 pounds of fish and shellfish per person in 2015. Up nearly a pound from the previous year, making it the biggest leap in seafood consumption in 20 years. Overfishing has been created by advanced fishing technology and an increased demand for fish. This has caused several marine species to become extinct or endangered. The seafood business is also valued at billions of dollars, and when that much money is at stake, people can become very greedy. Fishing vessels as big as cruise ships troll the waters and have the ability to fish four times more fish than ever before. Some scientists are predicting that seafood will eventually run out because of the global loss of seafood species. In todays podcast, we break down how overfishing impacts human lives, and why it is everyone’s problem. We also discuss fish toxicity and which high mercury fish to avoid. Last but not least, is fish a healthy food to consume? Thanks for joining us today. 20 Mar 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #34: A Vegan Diet For Diabetes & Superfoods for Diabetes | 00:39:30
Researchers have found that adopting a vegan diet for diabetes has the potential to prevent and even reverse Type 2 diabetes. A healthy plant-based diet could also help improve symptoms for anyone suffering from the many types of this disease. And one of the best ways to manage diabetes is to learn as much as you can about your condition. Diabetes is now a disease that affects 371 million people worldwide, and 187 million of them do not even know they have the disease, according to the International Diabetes Foundation. People who have diabetes can have numerous challenges. Including not knowing what to eat and conflicting nutrition information. If you don't have diabetes, please note that the US National Library of Medicines predicts that the prevalence of diabetes will increase by 54% between 2015 and 2030, so many people are at risk. It is never too early to protect your body from becoming pre-diabetic. Symptoms of pre-diabetes are easy to miss. This stage is referred to as the "grey area." Without drastic lifestyle changes, people with pre-diabetes could progress to full-blown diabetes. The scary thing about this type of diabetes is that it may have no signs or symptoms, and you won't find out unless you have a blood test. Type 2 diabetes is the most common diabetes, and over 85% of people with diabetes suffer from Type 2. This type is considered a lifestyle disease and associated with the way a person lives. The main factors contributing to lifestyle diseases include diet, nutrition, lack of exercise, and drug or alcohol abuse. With that said, it doesn't mean it's your fault that you have this disease. We have been duped by food advertising, food pyramids, food trends and misguided information about diet and food. In today's podcast, I will share what's new in diabetic research and what it means to you. You will learn how to make nutrition therapy a part of your treatment plan. Including a list of superfoods that may help you prevent and even reverse your type-2 and pre-diabetes. We will also explore if a vegan diet for diabetes is the right diet for everyone. Cooking with plants is a lifestyle that can be enjoyed full or part-time. Even adding two or three plant-based meals to your diet every week can have significant health benefits. Another study suggests that eating only one cup of leafy greens a day could slow the rate of memory decline in older adults. Today's podcast is devoted to getting back to the basics of cooking with plants. It doesn't have to be complicated. The methods of cooking that we discuss today provide maximum nutrition and satiate without a lot of time or energy. The kind of nutrition that makes you want to run up a mountain and not take a nap. 17 Aug 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #61- Is Your Tap Water Safe To Drink & The Safest Water To Drink | 00:22:16
Is your tap water safe to drink? Contaminated water has become an alarming issue not only in the United States but all over the world. Uncontaminated water is essential for human survival, healthy ecosystems, and sustainable development. The tap water we drink isn’t just coming from your local stream. It comes from lakes, rivers, reservoirs, or underground sources like aquifers. And any kind of water can become polluted with chemicals, regardless of its size or location. According to a new report by the non-profit Environmental Working Group, as many as 43 states expose millions of people to dangerous chemicals in their tap water. Residents of Newark, New Jersey recently faced a lead water crisis which put 30,000 residents at risk of lead poisoning. And in 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan, switched its water source to the Flint River which led to tainted drinking water that contained lead and other chemicals. Children are particularly vulnerable to unsafe tap water. Lead exposure in children can impact brain development and the nervous system. Water is such an important topic, and today, we explore how to make sure your tap water is safe to consume. 14 Apr 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #75: Healthy Pantry Food & Canned Food Recipes For Isolation | 00:23:18
People often significantly underestimate the quantity and value of the foods that they have stored in cupboards and pantries. Today’s podcast will teach you how to make the most out of your pantry food. The uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus is the most challenging thing to handle. Unquestionably, food, and having enough of it is of the utmost importance. And seeing bare shelves at grocery stores is fueling that fear. People are trying to minimize the risks associated with frequent shopping so they are buying in more significant quantities. But experts do agree that there is enough food in the supply chain, grocery stores just weren’t prepared for this. So my recommendation is to begin by doing a pantry, cupboard inventory. A thorough list will help make good use of what you have and perhaps calm your nerves about not having enough food. Also, pantry food is often thought to be less nutritious than fresh foods, but research shows that is not always true. Actually, some canning can preserve most of the food’s nutrients. Especially when it comes to canned beans and canned tomatoes. Today, we will learn lots of new ways and recipes to make the most out of our pantry food. Thanks to today’s podcast sponsor, Osea Malibu. You can go to Osea Malibu to receive $10.00 off your purchase of $50.00 or more. 30 Jul 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #60- Legumes List, Health Benefits & Recipes | 00:18:09
In today's podcast we focus on the healthiest beans you can eat from my legumes list. Legumes provide a magnitude of essential nutrients that can help you live a longer and healthier life. And science proves that beans contribute to longevity because they cool down systemic inflammation. Inflammation contributes to many long-term diseases including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Chances are legumes, such as beans and lentils are not part of your regular diet. This legumes list provides you with my favorite legumes, and some easy ways to make them part of your regular diet. Legumes List includes:Chickpeas- Also known as garbanzo beans are low in calories, rich in protein, and contain 71% of the RDI for folate. Folate is one of the B-vitamins that is needed to make red and white blood cells. Folate also converts carbohydrates into energy (metabolism) and maintains the genetic building blocks of the body. Chickpeas are an excellent base for sandwiches like this Vegan Chickpea Sandwich with Sun-Dried Tomatoes. Lentils- Lentils are low calorie, high fiber, high protein and contain 90% of the RDI for folate. They can be used to create almost anything from veggie burgers to soups, stews, and salads. My favorite is my east meets west Black Lentil Salad with Apples & Toasted Coconut. Black Beans- Are three times less expensive than beef and chicken and are much more nutritionally dense. They can be the base for any veggie burger or as the perfect taco filler. Cannellini Beans-Make a great salad. Drain some cooked beans, add some chopped sun-dried tomatoes arugula. Top with some fresh lemon juice. Or you can make one of my all-time favorite recipes, Hemp Seeds, Cannellini Beans and Spinach. You can find today's Three-Bean Longevity Soup recipe in this week's show notes. Hope this legumes list inspires you to add more beans to your diet! Thanks for stopping by. 09 Mar 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #72-The Single Best Way to Prevent Novel Coronavirus Infection | 00:24:16
Given the heightened risk of contracting the novel coronavirus, today’s podcast is dedicated to the single best thing you can do to avoid it. Unquestionably, I am not an alarmist, but sometimes we need to prepare for a possible disruption in our lives like the novel coronavirus. Also, as of today, March 5, the chances of contracting the novel coronavirus is very low, so please don’t panic. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take precautions. First off, we are being inundated with new, unfamiliar words and phrases. For example, SARS-CoV-2 is the official name of the novel coronavirus that is spreading. COVID-19 is the disease it causes. Most media outlets use the term coronavirus to describe SARS-CoV2. Coronaviruses CoV is a family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe disease. There are hundreds of coronaviruses, most of which circulate among animals including pigs, camels, bats and cats As a result, the term novel coronavirus (nCoV), means this virus is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. It should be noted, that odds are you won’t contract novel coronavirus. Especially if you know how to protect your body from the infection. Learn today your best defense against the novel coronavirus and the best protection against any flu. Today’s podcast includes a recipe from “The Easy 5 Ingredient Vegan Cookbook” available now on Amazon. My sponsor for today’s podcast is Ordinary Vegan’s pure organic vegan CBD Oil made from Hemp. 10 Apr 2016 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #8: Letting Go Of The Life We Planned To Have The Life That Is Waiting For Us | 00:29:43
“Letting go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us” ~~Joseph Campbell I love Joseph Campbell’s quote about life. Is it genuinely possible to have the life that is waiting for you if you have a job, family, and obligations? If you could imagine the perfect life, what would it look like? Do you do what you want or what is expected of you? How can you change your life? Since becoming vegan, I have stepped outside my world and opened myself up to a new community of vegan people who are smart, compassionate, encouraging and enthusiastic. I have learned a lot about nutrition, pesticides, animal abuse, exploitation and having a reverence for life. I will never be a perfect vegan because simply living means I affect the lives of all creatures, but I will do my best. Today I share my stories of letting go and taking chances, and the rewards I experienced because of those actions. I also share letters from our listeners who have decided to make the plant-based leap and their results. One of our listeners asked for a book recommendation to learn more about compassion and the connectives of being vegan and the world. I highly endorse “Living The Farm Sanctuary Life” by the incredible Gene Baur. Here is a link to the interview I did with Gene. Looking for a healthy, plant-based barbecue recipe. Today's plant-based kitchen featured a delicious option - here is a link to today’s recipe - No Bones Baby Jackfruit Barbecue Sandwich. 19 Mar 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #53- What Is Sugar & Which Sugars Are Healthy | 00:28:38
Fifty-years-ago, the sugar industry funded research that downplayed the risks of sugar and highlighted the hazards of fat. Forty-years-ago, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) started trickling into our food supply. Most people didn't know what HFCS was. So began the confusion about what is sugar and what sugars are healthy. When I decided to tackle the subject of sugar, one of the most surprising statistics I found out is that 99% of toddlers ages 12 to 18 months are downing 5-7 teaspoons of added sugar a day. Not only that, the average sugar consumption for adults is 25 teaspoons a day. Well over the recommended amounts. Since the discovery of high fructose corn syrup, the American consumption of fructose jumped from 37 grams per day in the 1970s to a record high of 62 grams per day in 2000. So where is all this added sugar coming from? Here is an example. A 20 oz soft drink contains about 16 teaspoons of high fructose corn syrup, and an energy drink can hold over 50 grams of high fructose corn syrup. Salad dressings, ketchup, fruit drinks and even bread can have a large amounts of sugar. And most people have no idea they are consuming this much-added sugar. In today’s podcast, we break down the truth about sugar, and how it impacts our health. We also examine natural sugars and their role in a healthy diet. We also discuss why sugar may not be vegan due to its questionable infiltration. Resources: A List of Bone Char Free Sugar Companies Thanks for listening. I could never give up cheese. Think you can't give up cheese? You're not alone. It is estimated that since 1970, we've gone from 8 pounds of cheese per person per year to 23 pounds. That equals about 60,000 calories of cheese every year. We have cheese on our pizza, burgers, burritos, nachos, and quesadillas. There's cheese in our salads, our sandwiches, and our soups. Some pizza chains like Domino's even has a pizza topped with six different kinds of cheese. So what is it about cheese????? 19 Feb 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #52- Protecting The Environment Begins With You | 00:26:31
It's no secret that human activity is changing the climate. For many, how to protect the environment can seem like a daunting task. In October 2018, the United Nations top climate science panel gathered in South Korea to prepare a new report on climate change. Their report stated the starkest warnings to date of the consequences of climate change. They predicted if significant steps were not taken, global warming could create extreme heat, drought, floods, poverty, and trillions of dollars in debt. Not long after, in December 2018, The EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet and Health was released. This commission brings together more than 30 world-leading scientists from across the globe to reach a scientific consensus that defines a healthy, sustainable diet. Their findings were equally as dire. The report revealed that if we don't make a radical change in diet and food production, we could be facing catastrophic damage to our planet. The good news is you don't have to feel helpless about the future of the planet. Because how to protect the environment begins with you. And there are positive steps we can do to tackle climate change right now. Today's podcast focuses on unexpected ways you can help. Thanks for listening and always remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle because how to protect the environment begins with you. 06 Sep 2017 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #24: Organic Produce -How To Save Money Buying, Storing & Cooking Organic Produce | 00:27:45
Today's podcast is entirely devoted to how to save money buying, storing and cooking organic produce. Let's begin with the most important question. Do you need to spend extra money on organic produce? Non-organic fruits and vegetables contain pesticides, but not everyone can afford organic produce. So if you need to save money and can't buy all organic, you need to know about the risk chart. There are 13 domestically grown non-organic fruits and vegetables that pose a higher risk of pesticides. Learn what those fruits and vegetables are and why the Environmental Working Group always recommends that you buy this produce organically. I don't know about you, but once you spend the money on organic produce, the last thing you want is for it to go to waste. A staggering amount of food is wasted from farm to table, often just because of how it looks. However, we the people waste the most food, and the most wasteful food category is fruits and vegetables. Has this ever happened to you? You make a shopping list, go to the store, put everything away, and then all of a sudden a few days have flown by. You go to use your produce bin, and you discover your beautiful and sometimes expensive produce is limp and lifeless. That is why one of the keys to great-tasting, long-lasting fruits and vegetables is proper storage. I never knew how to store produce properly, but I do now and I will share everything I know in this week's podcast. Lastly, fruits and vegetables come in a dazzling array of colors that give them their visual appeal. And what gives vegetables and fruits their particular color is the presence of certain pigments in their cells. To maintain these natural, vibrant colors and flavors during cooking, it is important to understand how to cook and treat each pigment category. You will learn everything you need to know about cooking produce by color in today's podcast. Our Ordinary Vegan cooking segment today is my favorite high-protein, low-calorie, high-fiber, 20-minute soup recipe - Chickpea Soup with Cabbage, Tomatoes & Basil. Hope you enjoy today's recipe and broadcast. My number one goal is to help you live a long and healthy life. 19 Dec 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #49: Allergy Causes, Allergy Symptoms & Prevention | 00:27:19
Each year, over 50 million Americans experience various types of allergies. Many of these allergic conditions are on the rise. In medicine, the hygiene hypothesis states a lack of early childhood exposure to germs suppresses the natural development of the immune system. In other words, living conditions in much of the world might be too clean and being exposed to germs as a child may protect us from allergies. An additional theory is that the increased antibiotic use parallels the rise in allergies and asthma. But other research suggests that the rising prevalence of allergies are the result of many factors. Bottom line, no one really knows the why, but there are ways we can protect ourselves. Today we will explore the most common allergy causes, symptoms, and prevention. Discover what allergen triggers could be lurking in your home. Learn the difference between cold and allergy symptoms. Find out some plant-based substitutions for common food allergies. Last but not least, I will reveal three foods that can help relieve your allergies. Hope you enjoy today’s podcast. 02 Nov 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #47: Dream Interpretation with Tricia Kelly | 01:03:02
You may think dream interpretation is an unusual subject for a health and wellness podcast, but dreaming is an important function for our emotional health. Dreams are often the way the brain solves problems and deals with our concerns. Furthermore, some psychologists think that dreams are nothing more than random brain activity. While others like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung believe that dreams can reveal a person's deepest unconscious wishes and desire. In particular, Freud's work on dreams explored the possibility of universal symbols in dreams. However, he was cautious about symbols and believed that symbols are more personal rather than universal. In other words, no one dream interpretation fits all. And why do the same dreams reoccur? Why do you keep dreaming of missing a plane or having to cram for a college exam after you graduated from college? Some people even dream that they are being murdered or murdering someone else. Above all, lengthy, distressful, or violent nightmares can disrupt our sleep and as we all know rest is essential to human health. Today, we learn how to analyze our dreams and why it is important with dream expert, Tricia Kelly. Tricia Kelly teaches an inspirational blend of Western and Eastern wisdom. Her thirty-eight years of teaching are enhanced with perspectives gained from traveling the world. She includes in her work the dream symbolism and wisdom of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Carl Jung and Edward Edinger. Tricia's philosophy is that dreams are simply a doorway into our deeper selves, and teach us who we are and how we are made. Tricia has an office in Costa Mesa, California. She is currently traveling and will begin meeting new clients in February 2019. You can reach her at dreamdrop676@gmail.com. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy the podcast. 18 Apr 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #36: Vegan Cooking & Essential Ingredients For The Vegan Pantry | 00:42:40
Most of my podcasts are centered around nutrition and the value of a plant-based diet to help you live a long, healthy life, but today I want to get back to the basics. When you first begin experimenting with a plant-based diet, it can be confusing. What are the essentials to buy? How do I properly cook those essentials? And what foods are needed to keep your family healthy and energized? Those topics are also helpful for anyone who has been practicing a vegan diet for some years because slowing down and re-evaluating how we do things can improve our approach to a plant-based lifestyle. In today’s podcast, we learn what vegan essentials we need to stock and techniques to properly cook those essentials. We also explore cooking with fresh and dried herbs. Herbs add flavor and brightness to any meal but maximizing that flavor is something that most of us have never been taught. In this podcast, we will learn the difference between delicate and hardy herbs and how to store, prepare, and cook with those herbs. Last but not least, today we visit Ordinary Vegan’s kitchen not once, but twice and create two of my favorite breakfast recipes; Vegan Fried Egg with a runny center and my favorite Mediterranean Vegan Omelet. There is much to cover, so this will be Part-1 of my series on vegan cooking. Please make sure you come back for more. Thanks so much for listening and for being part of our healthy community. 18 Aug 2020 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #84-Building T cells for Immunity & Protection Against Covid-19 | 00:19:13
T cells are the most important cells in adaptive immune response because these immune hunters can seek and destroy an infected cell. Unquestionably, building an army of these cells is the single most important defense we have against Covid 19. And although a robust immune system will not totally prevent us from getting the virus, it will offer additional protection. Furthermore, a strong immunity can lessen symptoms if you contract the disease. As we all know, this pandemic has been distressing, frightening, and disruptive. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the coronavirus, so the best way to prevent illness is to wear a mask, social distance, and maintain a healthy body. My number one goal is to keep you safe and well, and I hope today's conversation adds to your health and longevity. This podcast is dedicated to building, boosting and increasing T cells along with:

11 Jun 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #39: Eating Animals The Movie | 00:54:35
The documentary film, Eating Animals, begins with a simple question: where does our meat, eggs, and dairy come from? It then takes us on a eye-opening journey of today’s industrial animal agriculture. Eating Animals, is a enlightening movie about the environmental, economic and public health consequences of factory farming in America. It is slated to hit theaters across the country this month. The film is produced and narrated by actress Natalie Portman, based on the best selling book by Jonathan Safran Foer and directed by Christopher Dillon Quinn. It received high praises from film festivals across the country including a standing ovation at the 2017 Telluride Film Festival. Director Christopher Dillon Quinn tells the story of factory farming through intimate narratives of farmers, breeders, and activists dedicated to bringing their trade and the way we eat back to its roots. In today’s podcast, we discuss the making of Eating Animals and the state of industrial farming in America with the director Christopher Dillon Quinn. In addition to Eating Animals, Christopher Dillon Quinn directed the award-winning documentary "God Grew Tired Of Us" about the lost boys of Sudan. We also get to hear from the best-selling author behind the film, Jonathan Safran Foer. Eating Animals is Jonathan’s third book. A Los Angeles Times article stated that Eating Animals contains “the kind of wisdom that deserves a place at the table with our greatest philosophers.” In a Huffington Post article, Natalie Portman claimed that the book was so compelling that she went from a twenty-year vegetarian to a vegan activist. According to a piece by the New Yorker, the power of the book lies in its ability to discuss why humans can be so loving to their companion animals while simultaneously being completely indifferent to the ones they eat. Eating Animals opens in theaters on June 15. You can find out cities and dates here. Are you looking to increase serotonin and dopamine naturally? Maybe to fight the winter blues or perhaps to help with more serious mental health issues. Let”s face it. People are feeling more and more anxious these days. Between the threat of global warming, the coronavirus, and every day news events being stressed and sad it at an all time high. Feeling sad is part of being human and temporary. Depression is more than ordinary sadness. It can cause anxiety, fatigue, trouble with concentration, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Researchers have been studying the link between serotonin and depression for more than five decades. In addition, multiple studies now show a major correlation between decreased serotonin and the food we eat. Today we learn how the two neurotransmitters, serotonin, and dopamine, stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. We also learn how these neurotransmitters work in our body and how we can increase serotonin and dopamine by the food we consume. 28 May 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #57- How To Increase Metabolism By Cleansing The Liver | 00:23:10
Most people don't think about liver health to increase metabolism, but the liver is responsible for helping metabolize fat, produce bile and clean toxins. All of these functions contribute to converting food into energy. In fat metabolism the liver cells break down fats and produces energy. It also helps insure that the level of sugar in your blood (aka blood glucose) stays constant. Bile is primarily well-known as a digestive secretion that helps to digest fats. Bile also breaks down nutrients from food to produce energy and converts inactive Thyroid Hormone (T4) to active T3 that the cells can use. And when harmful toxins and substances enter your bloodstream, your liver acts fast to detoxify and destroy them. So keeping your liver healthy is crucial for overall health. Cleansing your liver can also affect your pancreas and help produce normal levels of insulin. You could also see improved blood pressure and better cholesterol numbers. In today’s podcast, we discuss 10 ways to cleanse your liver naturally to increase metabolism. I am going to begin this 2-3 week liver cleanse to increase metabolism on June 3. Hope you can join me. 14 Dec 2019 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #67-Time Restricted Eating - New Studies Update | 00:20:37
Unlike diets that tell you what to eat, time-restricted eating focuses on when to eat. Today’s podcast is devoted to the latest studies on time-restricted eating and the recently revealed health benefits. Time-Restricted eating is becoming an increasingly popular way to lose weight. Furthermore, this fasting technique is showing a lot of promise. In the past, many of the studies on time-restricted eating have involved animals rather than people. For example, one study in 2014 found that mice that only ate food during an 8 to 9 hour period each day lost weight and had improved metabolic fitness. Also, another highly touted peer-reviewed 2015 study in PLOS One, examined a possible interplay between the frequency of eating and metabolic health like low-grade inflammation. They found that more extended fasting periods and less food consumption in the evening may lower inflammation. This study is essential because low-grade inflammations are an underlying contributor to numerous cancers and insulin resistance. Both of these studies involved mice, not human beings. Finally, in November 2019, a new comprehensive study was done on humans, and the results were very favorable. Learn more about how you might benefit from time-restricted eating by listening to today’s podcast. Lastly, today’s podcast was sponsored by Ordinary Vegan’s CBD from hemp. 18 Sep 2018 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast 44: Am I An Empath? | 00:34:30
Do you often feel the pain of others? Do you feel drained after being around certain people for too long? Do you find yourself caring for or taking care of others more than yourself sometimes? Do you feel feelings deeper, harder, and longer than others. Are you sensitive to smells, crowds or excessive talking. Do you have a strong connection to nature or the animal kingdom? If so, you may be an empath. The trademark of an empath is that they feel and absorb other people's emotions and/or physical symptoms because of their high sensitivities. Empaths are often targeted by emotional vampires due to the strength of the empath's emotions and vibrant energy. So being an empath can be exhausting, especially if you don't understand this characteristic of yourself, and don't know how to protect yourself. In today's podcast, we will explore the traits of an empath with Dr. Judith Orloff, the leading voice in the field of empaths, psychiatry, and intuitive development. Dr. Orloff is the author of the best selling Book "The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People." In the book she educates readers about empaths, and offers strategies for empaths to protect themselves. Hope you enjoy today's podcast. But after two years of research, I came to the decision that CBD Oil is helping people get off medication for chronic pain or anxiety. 07 Feb 2017 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #17: The Ultimate Vegan Grocery List | 00:37:27
Do you want to begin a plant-based diet full or part-time but don't know where to start? Are you tired of all the confusion around what to eat on a plant-based diet? Do you worry about all the planning, hunting and gathering needed to create a vegan grocery list? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in the right place. Since becoming vegan in 2011, I have learned a lot about plant-based shopping and cooking. Many hits and many misses. In today's podcast I am providing a vegan grocery list to help you avoid the mistakes I made. My best advice would be to keep it simple, and always have some cooked whole-grains, veggies and beans on hand for easy and delicious meals. I try to stay away from all processed foods, but when I can’t avoid it, I read the ingredients carefully. While this food list offers substitutes for everything you eat on a standard American diet, I don’t recommend eating a lot of processed food. But often people need substitutes to help them transition, and there is nothing wrong with putting a little vegan butter on whole-grain toast or using foods that mimic the taste or texture of animal protein. It is about compassion. Compassion for your body, compassion for the environment and compassion for animals. Thanks for joining us today! **I have not been compensated from any brands that I mention in this podcast. It is just my personal opinion and I am sure I haven't tried everything available, but I certainly have come pretty close**

08 Jun 2017 | Ordinary Vegan Podcast #20: The Frightening Facts About Cow's Milk | 00:22:09
It’s not always popular to speak negatively about commonly consumed and highly touted foods like cow’s milk and cheese from cows. But I felt personally bamboozled when I read all the research and discovered the negative effects of drinking dairy on my health, not to mention the planet and the exploitation of the animals who provide the milk. How could I have been so misled? Well, it wasn't my fault. The United States Department of Agriculture and the milk industry has spent a lot of money over the years touting the importance of milk, and marketing that message to all of us. Learn the frightening facts about cow's milk and join us in Ordinary Vegan's kitchen and create your own healthy cheese alternative. Sign up for all of Ordinary Vegan's healthy recipes here.
