08 Jan 2020Developing a Fruit Tree Spray Schedule with Mike Biltonen01:03:28

If you’re growing your fruit trees organically, it’s important to protect them from pests and diseases and having a fruit tree spray schedule can make that much easier. Mike has farmed his entire professional career. He has horticulture degrees from Virginia Tech (BS ’86) and Cornell (MS ’92), as well as over 35 years of practical farming experience. He has a passion for sustainable orcharding and helps orchardists transition from conventional to organic practices with Know Your Roots, a small holistic company he owns and operates with his wife Debbie.

25 May 2021Bury Your Briefs to Evaluate Soil Microbes00:59:03

Soil microbes play an essential role in releasing nutrients from the soil in a form that our fruit trees and other plants can access. So, if your soil doesn't have a healthy and diverse microbe population, your fruit trees will not thrive. The problem is that microbes are so tiny that we can't see them with the human eye.

How do we know if we have a good microbe population? According to the Soil Conservation Council of Canada all you have to do is bury a pair of 100% cotton underwear in the topsoil of your garden. Leave your undies in the ground for a couple of months. Then, when you dig them up see what they look like. If your soil microbes have been busy digesting and recycling organic matter, then all that will be left is the elastic waist band.

To learn more about this process, I've invited two experts from the University of Guelph to talk about the "Bury Your Briefs Campaign" and about the role soil microbes play in keeping our fruit trees and other plants healthy. They are Cameron Ogilvie, Knowledge Mobilization Coordinator and Kari Dunfield, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology of Agro-ecosystems.  This month's contest prize: a U of G baseball cap and trowel.

Want to make your own botanical fruit tree spray? Here’s a recipe to try. While this spray is all-natural, it can harm beneficial insects like bees, so be sure to spray at a time when bees aren’t active (early morning and late evening). Keep an eye out for bird nests and avoid spraying near them. And remember, you wouldn’t want to get this in your eyes or on your skin, so handle it with care!

Garlic Fruit Tree Spray

Garlic is known for its strong scent, which can deter many types of pests, from aphids to caterpillars and even some types of fungi.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of garlic
  • 1 gallon of water (rainwater is best)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and Mince: Start by peeling the garlic cloves. Then, mince or finely chop them to release the essential oils. The finer, the better.
  2. Simmer: Combine the minced garlic with water in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer (not a full boil) and let it cook for about 20 minutes. This process infuses the water with garlic's active compounds.
  3. Cool and Strain: After simmering, take the pot off the heat and let it cool. Once it's cool, strain the mixture to remove the garlic pieces. A cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer works great for this. You want the liquid as clear as possible to prevent any sprayer clogs.
  4. Dilute (Optional): Depending on what you're dealing with, you might want to dilute the mixture. A common approach is to dilute the concentrated garlic water with more water. This step is adjustable based on your needs and the sensitivity of your plants.
  5. Bottle Up: Pour the strained, cooled liquid into a spray bottle or a larger sprayer for application. It’s ready to use!
  6. Apply: Spray it on the leaves of your fruit trees, covering both the tops and undersides where pests like to hide. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to apply, avoiding the hot midday sun to reduce the risk of burning the leaves.

Tips:

  • Storage: You can store the garlic spray in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze it in an ice cube tray and thaw cubes as needed.
  • Test: Always test the spray on a small area of the plant first to ensure it doesn't react badly.
  • Reapply: After rain or watering, you might need to reapply, as it can wash off.

30 Apr 2019 Dying Apple Trees and Sudden Apple Decline (SAD) with Kari Peter00:46:53

Kari Peter, Ph.D of Penn State Fruit Research and Extension Centre, talks about Sudden Apple Decline (SAD) or Rapid Apple Decline, which has devastated orchards in Ontario, New York State, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Apple trees die for many reasons and diseases like fireblight can also spread quite rapidly. But this problem, which is called Sudden Apple Decline (SAD) or Rapid Apple Decline can be identified when the dying apple tree seems to be infected around its graft union. You might see the bark at the graft union peeling off. Then the problem moves up the tree, killing the tree, but the root stock will still be alive and well and unaffected by the disease.

25 Jun 2019Fruit Trees and Spotted Wing Drosophila01:03:24

Nikki Rothwell of Michigan State University's Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Centre talks about spotted wing drosophila (SWD). Unlike other fruit flies that target mostly rotting or fermenting fruit, SWD targets fruit right on the tree, laying their eggs in the young fruit and eventually turning it into a wormy mess.

SWD targets a wide range of crops including cherries, apricots, plums raspberries, currants, and elderberries. The bad news is that spotted wing drosophila is spreading across North America, benefiting from our warming climate.

Nikki has found that there are ways to make our orchards less hospitable for SWD. Simple tools like pruning and orchard floor maintenance are a large part of the equation.

27 Aug 2019What are Biofertilizers? 01:01:32

In this episode, certified crop advisor Simon Neufeld talks about soil biology. Why is it important to have a lot of good organisms in your soil? What services do they provide? And if you do have "dead soil", is it possible to use so-called "biofertilizers" to bring it back to life?

Simon is the Chief Agronomist at Earth Alive Clean Technologies, a company that develops environmentally sustainable microbial products which they say can replace many of the damaging chemicals that farmers use today.

22 Jan 2020Pawpaw Fruit Facts01:05:18

Forget mangos and bananas. If you're interested in an exciting taste adventure in tropical fruit, check out the Native American pawpaw fruit. Now pawpaw fruit may be juicy, silky soft and tropical tasting, but this fruit grows on trees across North America from the eastern edges of Texas, to Florida, and all the way up to southern Ontario.

Like any new craze, folks are turning this fruit into pawpaw beer, gelato and other goodies. But the truth is pawpaws are not new. In fact, these trees were here long before Europeans settlers came to North America. So in this episode of The Urban Forestry Radio Show and Podcast we'll explore the history of pawpaws, tracing it back to to the First Nations.

Show guests include;

 * Self confessed "pawpaw propagandist" Paul DeCampo, who is one of the first people in the city of Toronto to start promoting the planting and harvesting of these beautiful fruit trees.
 * And Issac Crosby, Lead Hand in Urban Agriculture at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto and a member of Ojibwe Nation who remembers his great grandfather giving him a pawpaw to taste when he was just a child.

Learn all about how to grow pawpaws in this article.

This episode's contest prize was a copy of Kate Frey's book "Ground Rules: 100 Easy Lessons for Growing a More Glorious Garden"

Those are just a few of the questions discussed in this episode of The Urban Forestry Radio Show and Podcast with expert guest Christina Curell, Cover Crop and Soil Health Educator at Michigan State University.

Christina also talks about how to choose a cover crop that will suit your unique fruit tree growing conditions and how to use cover crops to prepare the soil for planting.
