11 Jun 2021Ep. 25 - The 7 Potholes of Podcasting with Travis Brown00:37:57

Travis Brown is the creator and instructor at Shortcut to Podcasting and the Chief Podcast Producer at Podcast Buddy. He has, over the past five years, developed an amazing system for launching a new podcast and consistently releasing episodes. In this episode of Operation Podcast, Travis breaks down the SEVEN bottlenecks to podcasting in today’s times!

  1. Not Making Your Podcast Audience-Centric and Inviting

The most common roadblock is that podcasters tend to make everything about themselves. Is your podcast all about you, your reviews, ratings, and scripts? If yes, there needs to be a shift in focus. And it's really easy to change that. Start inviting your audiences by asking their opinions or experience or feelings, and bring them to grow by being a part of your journey collectively.

“They [your audience] are the most important part, they are the hero of your journey.” Catch the interview with Travis Brown on Operation Podcast! www.operationpodcast.com.

  1. Needing to Qualify Your Podcast Listeners

Travis suggests using the Spray and Pray method to qualify your listeners. And by this, he means to say that you have to make your audience understand what the show will be about and let them figure out if they want to listen to it. Present the problem to your audience and then the fix to the problem.

“Qualifying is everything. It's in sales. It's in marketing. It's in everything that you do. And it's a very easy tweak. Because I think people don't know what to say.” Catch the interview with Travis Brown on Operation Podcast! www.operationpodcast.com.

  1. Your Podcast Does Not Know Its Target Audience

Understand your niche and your target audience and make it clear who your podcast is tailor-made for. You want everybody to listen to your podcast. But if people don’t understand whether your show is for them, it could take forever to grow. Once you gain more visibility, you could expand outward and go to different topics.

“Be really specific, be really targeted.” Catch the interview with Travis Brown on Operation Podcast! www.operationpodcast.com.

  1. Not Realizing That The First 60 Seconds of Your Podcast Is Gold

The first 60 seconds are crucial to hooking your listeners and making them decide if the episode is for them. It would not be very pleasant to have a 60-second regular podcast intro to regular listeners, especially. You could avoid this by using that time to tell them what the episode is about or give them the highlights from the conversation.

“If you had any value meter on your podcast, the first 60 seconds is absolute gold.” Catch the interview with Travis Brown on Operation Podcast! www.operationpodcast.com.

  1. Not Investing in Your Skills and Circle

Travis says podcasters, specifically, don't invest in learning or invest in their circle. But if you look at anybody successful, you'll find things going the other way round. Travis cites Dan Pena’s words to explain the same. It goes like, “Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future.”

“Invest in yourself with your health, your mental, your podcasting skills, your business skills, and you will grow a lot faster than just endlessly googling and YouTube in circling yourself around.” Catch the interview with Travis Brown on Operation Podcast! www.operationpodcast.com.

  1. Having A Cluttered Social Media Account

The best way to promote your podcast organically, according to Travis, is through social media. The social media accounts of many podcasters, however, are confusing, with personal, professional, and podcast-related posts in the same place. It would help to make your profile specific to your podcast content and promotion.

“The less confusion we can create with people, the better.” Catch the interview with Travis Brown on Operation Podcast! www.operationpodcast.com.

  1. Setting Unrealistic Targets and Failing to Focus on Growing Slowly

Travis explains that giving yourself an imaginary crushing goal that nobody told you to do and then regretting over not having accomplished it could be incredibly disheartening. You set your focus on the number of downloads, which may not be a good means of evaluating your podcast as you cannot be sure if a person actually listened to your podcast. You start feeling like a failure. Don’t set yourself to feel that way. Instead, use your time to make great content, social media posts, network, read books, and continue growing.

“I think we just get caught up in followers, subscribers, all these numbers that make us feel validated. When I think the real validation for you will come when you can actually get feedback from your audience.”

About Travis Brown:

Travis Brown is the Chief Podcast Producer at Podcast Buddy, where he helps entrepreneurs, authors, coaches, and more start, launch, and grow their podcast audience.

Key Highlights of the Episode:

  • Every podcaster needs to think of themselves as a guide, helping their audience grow.
  • Travis talks about The Joe Rogan Show and why it appeals to the listeners so much. “You feel like you're sitting at that table with him and the guest. Like you're in the circle. And that's how it feels as a listener.”
  • Try creating a specific hook towards the beginning of your episode to increase audience interest.
  • Learn how to invest in your skills and expertise to build a better future.
  • Allow yourself to go back to your inner creative self and just have fun.

01 Oct 2020Ep. 12 - Starting a Podcast From Scratch with Anthony Spada00:23:50

Join Chase Chewning and Anthony Spada as they talk about the very first steps he took to initiate his podcast, Ace of Spada, how the show evolved quickly, and what are his key recommendations to join the podcast world. Anthony is a fitness and nutrition coach who watched his audience and client roster grow as he started his podcast. Stay tuned and enjoy!

Just. Hit. Record.

Back in May, 2019 Anthony decided he didn’t want to be just a listener anymore; he wanted to be a host. With that decision in mind, he did a research about good microphones for podcasting, hit “record”, and just let the words out. Starting a show for his audience gave him the opportunity to not just learn about other people’s stories, but to tell his own. This vulnerability allowed the show to grow by itself and reach a much larger collection of listeners.

“We all have a story to tell, we all went through unique situations” – Anthony Spada. Catch him on this episode from Operation Podcast (www.operationspodcast.com).

Power of Connection

Besides sharing experiences and creating a valued content, starting a podcast also made Anthony expand his relationships and connections. The majority of guests who made an appearance on his show received an invitation simply via Instagram DMs. Breaking the ice with a guest via social media first really influenced the type of conversations that he would have with the guest on the show, making it more organic.

“A lot of people are afraid of what might someone say” – Anthony Spada. Catch him on this episode from Operation Podcast (www.operationpodcast.com).

Growing an Audience

His coaching business also experienced a significant growth. By having guests with a large list of followers, his profile started to catch attention, which led to a natural visibility for his business. In addition, consistency and the “keep-showing-up” mentality also had an important role on this growth, propelling his message.

“You are receiving good things, because you are giving” – Anthony Spada. Catch him on this episode from Operation Podcast (www.operationspodcast.com).

02 Jun 2021Ep. 24 - Podcast Branding Do's and Don'ts with India Jackson00:33:00

India Jackson is a successful entrepreneur and podcast host of The Flaunt Your Fire Podcast. India and Chase discuss stepping into podcasts and how they helped them grow personally and professionally. Learn about India's accidental happy entry into the podcasting space and how that brought her incredible growth!

Podcasts- A Record of Inspiring Conversations

Podcasting was not something India ventured into intentionally. A gifted writer, however, India did not enjoy the process of writing, but her role demanded her to summarize guest interviews into blog posts. While she was interviewing her friend, she thought about recording it. That is when she realized she had just done a podcast! It later went on to get five stars on major podcasting platforms. They talked about diversity, equity, inclusion, life, and navigating the ethical marketplace and business on the show. Later, they transitioned to a secondary podcast called Flaunt Your Fire, where they dive into branding, visibility, and marketing topics.

"Everything transpires in the way that we all hope, which is that our podcasts grow when we reach more people. It becomes more and more complicated to double back on some of the decisions that we've made, that may be misaligned with our values if we didn't ask ourselves that from the beginning."

Podcasts- Why Should You Define Your Brand?

A brand isn't just about the visual aspects of your business or venture. It's also about reputation. Your brand's visuals help determine the public reputation of your podcast or host. It can help set you apart from the rest. Although you could begin to influence your audience with the colors, the logo, the podcast cover art, and the like, you can also decide how you show up in front of the camera and create a reputation around that. The foundation before getting to design is asking ourselves the intention and value that brought us up there.

"Ultimately, that description, that reputation, what is said IS THE BRAND."

About India Jackson:

"India Jackson is the CEO of Flaunt Your Fire and co-founder of Pause on the Play The Community, helping entrepreneurs amplify their influence without changing who they are. From beauty model and bodybuilder to published photographer, for ten years, India watched as talented professionals were forced to adopt identities that were sellable but not authentic. Her brand visibility agency and podcast now help clients ditch stale marketing, break out of industry molds, and build authority by being themselves.

India is a first-generation college graduate, earning a Bachelor of Art and Design while working full time and launching a business. She's been featured by Forbes and She Podcasts Live and is trusted by leading brands across North America, including Christian Dior."

Key Highlights of the Episode:

  • We can no longer get away with not addressing the branding and the visual appeal of podcasts
  • More about Pause on the Play The Community and the resources it gives to start your brand new podcast.
  • Sponsorships as a podcaster's way of doing business.
  • Clubbing personal and business podcast types to stand strong in the industry.
  • Being more intentional about your podcasting venture and continuing to grow.
