07 Jun 2020The Hand Match00:53:21
The French Open may happen at some point this year but it must be said, we’re missing the Parisian clay right now. This week we head back to 2003 and the classic semifinal between Serena Williams and Justine Henin. Serena was on a 33-match winning streak at the slams but it was not meant to be on this day in what was an extraordinary contest. You don’t get a moniker like ‘The Hand Match’ for nothing.

A note from Simon and Devang: Black Lives Matter. Inhumane police brutality that is perpetuated by a culture of white supremacy must end. We fully support those protesting for change around the world.

Below are links to organizations that are fighting against racial injustice in Canada, the United States, and around the world. Educating ourselves is one of many steps we must take together. If you are able, please consider making a donation. Thank you.

13 Jun 2020Federer, Safin & Houston00:50:30
It’s not their most famous match, but when looking back on the Federer-Safin rivalry, this second set tiebreak must be chronicled. This week Open Era heads to 2004 and the Tennis Masters cup semifinal in Houston. Federer was finishing off a simply dominant season and Safin laid the groundwork for one more slam run. That combination created an incredible moment.

“I'm not loving you, the way I wanted to

So keep ya COVID lockdown”

That’s right, the tennis world was abruptly shutdown when the novel coronavirus hit the sporting world. The end came so quickly. After spending the last year month in Australia, Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic departed Melbourne with the biggest trophies up for grabs. On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang break down both finals, and hit on what they loved and hated from this year’s Australian Open: Stefanos Tsitsipas, electronic line calling, injuries, Jennifer Brady, Aslan Karatsev, Serena Williams, FILA, fake crowds, real crowds plus plenty, plenty more. All jokes aside, it was a monster week in Tennis. We had blockbuster matchups in Barcelona, Belgrade, Istanbul and Stuttgart. The tennis just keeps on coming, good job the pandemic is over!

14 Jun 2021French Open: High-Stefinition00:59:08
We were treated to a stunning final week in Paris with possibly the greatest clay court match of all time included in the mix. Barbora Krejcikova decided to take a break from winning in Doubles (which she still won) to win the Singles title and a small kid who doesn’t know how to fight became a man, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the terminator that is Novak Djokovic.
