23 Feb 2017EPISODE 04: Recipe Testing + Bus Accidents 00:15:49

Last week we learned that if you ever have to get a spinal tap, call a cab or wait for someone to pick you up. I also shared the complicated feelings I felt about hiring the photography team for the book and what that meant for not only my wallet, but my ego.

This week, I finish recipe testing and head to LA for the cookbook shoot. And then something I could have never expected happened. Something that changed everything.

08 Feb 2017Episode 2: Floods + Extensions 00:20:37

Last week was a big week, the week I got my book deal. After months of back and forth, with contract negotiations I signed the contract. And then almost threw up opening my first advance check. And DID throw up after meeting with publishers in NY. If you’re starting here, I wouldn’t. Go back and start from the beginning.

When I left you at the end of the episode, I was about to move to Charleston after living in Chicago for nearly 16 years. Remember, I was going to start my book as soon we arrived and I could unpack my kitchen boxes. But it didn’t really go as I expected...

Max Wastler is my guest this week. I’ve known Max for about four years, but it wasn’t until this episode that I truly understood the passion behind the risks he’s taken and choices he’s made with his career. It made for a solid talk.

Max talks about the 33 jobs he’s had in 33 years, the origins of his hustler ways, and his mission to connect people to the makers of the products they use every day. He completely changed my perspective on the phrase “Made In America,” and I’m excited to hear what you think about this episode.

18 Sep 2014Episode 11: Seeing The Potential & Accepting What Is with Jess Lively of Life With Intention Online00:53:10

Jess Lively is today’s guest. She’s one of the biggest reasons I wanted to start a podcast in the first place. Well, that and I like to talk a lot. Jess is one of the most passionate people I know – and watching her do her thing (when I was a guest on her show) gave me the bug to start my own.

On this episode, Jess and I discuss her path from selling weird ankle bracelets at a pool to the thriving business she has today, how setting goals isn’t always the best approach to finding success and happiness, and how the words of an old Italian sculptor changed her life forever.

You might remember that Joy Claire mentioned Sarah on Episode 5 as someone that inspires her. Man, she was right. Her story really is inspiring.

Who says thirteen isn’t lucky? Actually, I do all the time. I’m pretty superstitious. But getting to interview one of my favorite podcast hosts for this thirteenth episode feels pretty damn lucky. Eric Zimmer is the soothing voice behind the incredible and thought-provoking podcast, The One You Feed.

09 Oct 2014Episode 14: Real Talk On Risk Taking, Growing Your Brand + Motherhood with Dana Gordon of Dana Rebecca Designs00:50:20

Dana Gordon of Dana Rebecca Designs (DRD) is my guest this week. One of the reasons I love Dana is that she never disappoints in the “real talk” department. She cuts through the bullshit and is always genuine, honest, and practical when comes to conversations on business and tricky life things. And she knows what she’s talking about. She’s built one of the most successful and popular jewelry brands out there today. Over the years, we’ve had a few of these talks, but this is for sure my favorite one (and YOU get to hear it!).

Dana and I discuss the giant risk she took that decided the fate of her career, the importance of creatives being business-minded, her advice on growing your brand to the next level, and the clash between working and stay-at-home moms (and what to do about it). There are some real game changer nuggets of wisdom in this episode, and I can’t wait for you hear them.

Heather and I discuss how she took her health in her own hands when doctors weren’t giving her answers, how she went from eating her first salad at 19 to becoming a wellness expert, tips on getting a book published, and why she’s not as perfect as you might think. 23 Oct 2014Episode 16: Pursuing More Than One Passion + Protecting Your Work With Julie Lee Of Julie’s Kitchen01:00:17

Food-photography queen bee, Julie Lee of Julie’s Kitchen, is this week’s guest! Julie’s been on the site before, sharing one of her beautiful recipes and hosting the first ever LA For Reals Meals, but this is the first time we really dig deep into the path she followed that brought her to success. And that path might not be what you think.

Julie and I discuss juggling five jobs at a time in the early days, how it’s ok (and actually pretty healthy) to pursue more than one passion, and the action she took to protect her work after a big company used it without her permission. A lot of heart and a little bit of scandal…sounds pretty good, right?

06 Nov 2014Episode 17: Putting Yourself Out There + Creating An Authentic Brand with Jena Gambaccini of ChiCityFashion00:48:09

And we’re back! This week’s guest is Jena Gambaccini of ChiCityFashion. You’ve probably seen Jena around here before…creating half-assed meals and being the only person ever allowed to attend multiple For Reals Meals (it’s hard to say no to her). Jena’s been a big supporter of OPP since day one. And I’m really excited for you to hear her story.

Jena and I discuss why she hid ChiCityFashion from friends and family in the early days, what she learned about confidence and putting yourself out there, and the advantages of creating a city-specific website. Oh, and I also force her to reveal the new brand she’s been working on, which I’m really excited about. And we talk dogs (hers) and babies (mine!). 13 Nov 2014Episode 18: Becoming A Cancer Champion + The Power Of Telling Your Story with Megan Silianoff00:44:50

Get ready to fall in love with one of my favorite people on the planet, because Megan Silianoff is this week’s guest. Megan was in town from Texas to host this month’s For Reals Meals, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to interview her…in person. My first face-to-face interview for the podcast. And it all went down at The Thompson Hotel.

Megan and I talk about overcoming cancer (twice), the incredible and emotional process of adopting her daughter, and the book she wrote that chronicles it all (99 Problems But A Baby Ain’t One). 20 Nov 2014Episode 19: Finding Your Gift With De’Mar Hamilton of The Plain White T’s00:52:33

This week’s guest is musician De’Mar Hamilton. De’Mar and I have been friends for years, and I’ve made him do things like this and this before…but this is for sure my most favorite thing we’ve done together.

De’Mar and I discuss his early beginnings in Chicago, the music experience that transformed his career, the blessing and the curse of having a #1 hit on the radio, and how he found the love of his life…halfway across the world. I love De’Mar’s story and think you will too.

This week’s guest has a lot of name. But that’s ok, because he’s got a lot of talent to go along with it. It’s Isaiah Freeman-Schub, market editor at WSJ (as in The Wall Street Journal). He knows what’s up, and I’m so excited to have him on this week!

Listen in to hear us discuss the things we had to eat (in this case, drink), the people we thought were neat, and all the things that made us say sheeeeet. And then find all the links below.

23 Nov 2015Episode 46: Omission vs. Remission + Healing Through Food (Even When It Seemed Impossible) With Shari Koolik Leidich Of Two Moms In The Raw00:44:41

Two Moms In The Raw’s Shari Koolik Leidich is this week’s guest. I’m excited for about a million reasons, but I’ll break it down to my top three…

1. Her products are DELICIOUS and were my savior when I changed my diet.
2. Her cookbook is one the best of this year.
3. Her enthusiasm, sense of humor, and just plain Shari-ness is incredible (you’ll hear what I mean when you listen to the episode).

Shari and I discuss how she was blindsided by her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, how she took her health into her own hands after conventional medicine wasn’t working, the company that launched as a result of it, and how she lives a life of omission and not remission. Shari is the real deal.

Food photographer + writer Dennis Prescott (aka Dennis The Prescott) is this week’s guest. When I say food photographer, I mean FOOOD photographer. As in, I suddenly become starving anytime I look at his photos. They are vibrant, beautiful, and literally dripping with goodness. Mainly, cheese.

07 Dec 2015Episode 47: Overcoming The Fear Of Being Alone + Creating A Space With Meaning With Anne Sage Of Sage Living00:40:28

After reading the intro to Anne Sage’s new book, Sage Living: Decorate For The Life You Want, I immediately reached out to her and asked her to be on the podcast. It was that good. Lucky for all of us, she said yes.

In this episode, I ask Anne to dive deeper into that intro, and she shares how she was able to overcome the fear of living/being alone, how she got through both a love and business divorce, what steps she took to live a happier and healthier life, and how she began to understand (and wrote a book about) the relationship between the spaces we live in and our interior lives. Sounds heavy…but there was lots of laughing, too.

08 Jan 2016The Things That Freaked My Week Micro Podcast With Devin Kirk of Jayson Home00:21:17

Have you ever become friends with someone right before you move away to a new city? Someone that you really connect with and makes you laugh and just gets you? And you ask yourself (and them), “WHHHHHY have we been living in this city so long and not known each other??” It’s sorta like when you were little and you met your new best friend at summer camp and then summer was over and you had to go your separate ways. And while you might be thinking about one another, you never really talk again. Well, that was then. And now, Skype exists. So let me introduce you to this week’s guest.

It’s Devin Kirk. He’s the VP of Merchandising (which means he gets to travel the world picking out cool stuff) at Jayson Home. If you’ve ever picked up a magazine and seen the couch of your dreams…chances are it’s credited to Jayson Home. I met him right before I left Chicago. He’s the best for 100 reasons, but mainly because he references Dolly Parton and Oprah stories in the same episode.

11 Jan 2016Episode 48: The Real Anti-Diet, Giving Yourself Permission To Eat, And Finding Closure (Or Not) With Kelsey Miller Of Big Girl00:53:27

I know that the title of this podcast is long. And I wanted to make it 20 times longer, because we covered so much great stuff in this episode. This week, I’m talking to Kelsey Miller. She’s a senior writer at Refinery 29, creator of The Anti-Diet Project, and author of the new book, Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting And Got A Life.

Kelsey and I talk about what it’s truly like inside the head of someone with disordered eating, what led her to start the Anti-Diet Project, what “giving yourself permission to eat” actually means and what it doesn’t, the traumatic childhood experience that shaped the way she saw her body, how she hopes speaking out about this experience might open the door for others, and why she doesn’t exactly believe in the idea of closure.

08 Feb 2016Episode 49: Living With Misophonia In A Noisy World With Jeffrey S. Gould of Quiet Please00:56:59

So technically I’m supposed to be on “hiatus” from the podcast while I finish my book. But I just couldn’t stay away from you. Especially when I’ve just recorded an interview on a topic that so many of you have said you wanted to know more about.

When I first talked about misophonia (the hatred of sound) on Episode 30 with Ashlae Warner, I got tons of messages from listeners saying they felt such relief knowing they weren’t alone in either experiencing misophonia themselves or having to deal with someone who had it. So when I saw there was a new documentary about it, I knew I had to get the filmmaker (Jeffrey S. Gould) on the pod to give us the full scoop on this condition…and share everything he learned while making the film.

Jeffrey and I discuss what misophonia is and isn’t; how sufferers deal with the anger, sadness, and guilt that comes with the condition; how his own sensitivities to sound led him to create his new film, Quiet Please; his tips on creating coping mechanisms; and why he says the grocery store can turn him into Charles Manson.

29 Feb 2016Episode 50: Getting Your Hands Dirty + Pursuing What You Love Despite The Obstacles With Celestine Maddy Of A Wilder Life00:53:50

Episode 50!!! Ok, technically there are more than 50 episodes if you count Freak Your Weeks…but this is the 50th long-form interview. Which is just nuts. Before I get to the guest, I want to thank you for being so supportive of the podcast. I love the cool club we’ve created together!

Our 50th guest is Celestine Maddy of the new book A Wilder Life! You got a sneak peak of it last week, and now you’ll get to hear all the nitty gritty details of how making this book went down.

Celestine and I talk about her life before she ventured outside (there were lots of video games involved), how getting your hands dirty can make you feel more grounded, why she decided to take a break from her magazine (Wilder Quarterly), and what nature, the gym, and Khloe Kardashian have in common (you might be surprised).

23 Mar 2016Episode 51: The Last Great Female Health Taboo + What You Can Do About It With Shannon Cohn Of Endo What?00:50:57

Surprise! New podcast. I know we never release mid-week, but this topic and guest were too important not to share right away.

I’m talking with filmmaker Shannon Cohn about Endo What?, her new documentary. This new film not only gives all the facts and information that your doctor never told you about endometriosis, but encourages and inspires women to be more empowered with their healthcare choices to treat it. And it is beyond powerful.

Shannon and I discuss why more women with endometriosis aren’t diagnosed sooner, how her own battle with the disease inspired her to make this film, the impact environmental toxins play with endo, the number one diet change you can make to possibly help manage endo symptoms, and why women’s below-the-waist health issues are the last great health taboo.

02 May 2016Episode 52: Why Healthy Eating Doesn’t Solve All Your Problems + Being An Introvert + Hustling Hard With Laura Miller Of Raw. Vegan. Not Gross.00:51:28

Laura Miller is here! You may know her from crazy food ensembles, popular Tastemade videos, or her upcoming book (Raw. Vegan. Not Gross.), but what you might not know is that she struggled lots personally and professionally to get to where she is today. Laura gets candid about some of these issues and what she did to get to the other side.

Laura and I talk about how she went through a dozen jobs before landing a career in food, how she became the trojan horse of introverts, why she believes good food/diet isn’t the magic pill cure-all for being truly healthy, how she’s dealt with the mean girls and boys of the Internet, and how she’s helping other women with her #froobs (food + boobs) community.

25 May 2016Episode 53: Turning A Dead End Into A U-turn With Jensen Karp Of Kanye West Owes Me Three Hundred Dollars00:53:28

So, I wasn’t supposed to bring you another pod this month buuuuttt to celebrate the OPP cookbook shoot, I’m doing it. Your support really helped make this book happen, and I wanted to give you a little something in return. And this little something is pretty special, because Jensen Karp is this week’s guest. Jensen is a writer, comedian, and old friend who once had an intervention with me about wearing fewer capes (and by fewer, I mean none).

Jensen and I talk about his million-dollar rap-record deal, how he dealt with that record never being released, the health scare that inspired him to write his new book (Kanye West Owes Me Three Hundred Dollars: And Other True Stories Of A White Rapper Who Almost Made It Big), and why he believes that when you hit a dead end there’s always a U-turn.

28 Jul 2016Episode 54: Asking For What You Want With Julia Turshen Of Small Victories01:11:04

This week, I’m talking to the incredible food writer and cookbook author Julia Turshen. Julia and I cover a lot of what you might expect in an interview with a popular food writer, but it was the not-food talk that really made this episode one of my favorites.

Julia and I discuss how she knew she was ready to write her own cookbook (after co-authoring almost a dozen books), the importance of asking for what you want and being credited for your work, one of the most important rules in her marriage (her wife is Grace Bonney), and how being an active listener is an important first step in creating change.

04 Aug 2016Episode 55: The Life Of A Clairvoyant Medium With Katrina-Jane00:56:10

On this season of the podcast, we’re going to mix it up a little. Yes, you’ll still get to hear from your favorite authors, health + wellness gurus, and foodie friends…but you’ll also be hearing episodes from people you might not expect. I, for one, want to learn more about the people doing compelling things that aren’t in my Instagram feed or popping up on the usual blogroll. And I also want to learn/share more about ideas, concepts, practices, and careers that we might not quite understand or have questions about (and maybe even a little skepticism).

Today we’re kicking that off with author and clairvoyant medium Katrina-Jane.

Katrina-Jane and I discuss the difference between being a clairvoyant, a psychic, and a medium, how traumatic events in her childhood shaped who is she and the career she has today, finding her true love, and the event that finally made her feel that she belonged.

25 Aug 2016Episode 56: Honoring Your Past, Present, And Future With Grace Bonney Of In The Company Of Women01:04:28

Grace Bonney is back. You might remember her from a Freak Your Week appearance this past winter. But those episodes are short. And I needed MORE GRACE. So I asked her to come back to talk about her latest project (her new book, In The Company Of Women)

Grace and I talk about how the lack of diversity in the media inspired her latest project, how she battles to find the balance between full speed and reverse, the biggest professional struggle she’s dealing with right now, and how she broke one of her biggest rules to create a brand new project – which she’s announcing for the first time here!

01 Sep 2016Episode 57: Confronting Past Traumas + Chinese Medicine Explained With Giselle Wasfie of REMIX01:10:34

This week, I’m talking to Giselle Wasfie. She’s a former hip hop journalist and current Chinese-medicine practitioner (acupuncturist-herbalist). She’s also the founder of the aromatherapy and beauty line REMIX by Giselle Wasfie. As I mentioned on the episode with Katrina Jane, this season I want to cover topics that sometimes have a little mystery surrounding them or lifestyles we think we know about…but might not fully understand. This is one of those episodes.

Giselle and I discuss Chinese Medicine (what it is, how it works, and why it’s still not widely accepted as “real” medicine), how she knew being a journalist wasn’t her career path in life, her advice on looking at past traumas in a new light, and her biggest (and easy) tip on how to deal with toxic people and negative interactions in our lives.

20 drops of MAY CHANG
Uplifting and bright, helps keep the mood light.

10 drops of PETITGRAIN
Relieves stress.

+ 5 drops of YLANG YLANG
Sedates adrenaline and relaxes the nervous system.

Giselle’s notes: I like to spray it pre-meditation or I’ve sold bottles to yoga teachers who use it before class for “grounding” while keeping the energy “uplifted” and flowing. I also use it in the clinic a lot (in between patients) to keep the mood upbeat and positive. Avoid using during pregnancy and avoid getting product in eyes.

11 Sep 2016Episode 59: Creating Space + Letting Your Guard Down + Kundalini Explained With Ra Ma Kaur01:14:03

I’ve been dabbling in Kundalini for the last few years. A YouTube video here. An OnDemand class there. But recently I’ve gotten pretty serious about the practice – I now go to classes and even started buying books on the topic. I haven’t really shared about it here, because it looks pretty weird from the outside and definitely sounds really weird when you try to explain it. This site is all about taking one part at time and Kundalini felt like a lot of parts at a time. But the more I do it, the better I feel. Things shift inside me. My brain feels clearer. And my mood is not as, um, moody. So I felt like it was time to share. I also realized that what seems weird to me might completely be your norm. What’s that old saying about “assuming”? Yes, I was kind of being an ass about it.

So I reached out to one of my favorite teachers, Ra Ma Kaur, to explain all things Kundalini. She truly knows her stuff. And, by the way, has the most soothing voice while talking about all that stuff she knows.

Ra Ma and I discuss Kundalini yoga (what it is, how it works, and why it’s about to “pop” in the mainstream), how we can tune into our not-so-positive habits and begin to change them, why it’s important to explore new ways to let our guards down, and how this cult-looking (it’s not one) form of yoga is different than anything you’ve ever experienced – and just might change your life.

19 Sep 2016Episode 60: How One Person CAN Create Change + Planting As Many Seeds As Possible With Francesca Kennedy of IX Style00:51:57

When Francesca Kennedy reached out to me about being on the podcast, I took one look at the video she sent and knew I HAD to talk to her. This woman is doing amazing things and 100% creating change in peoples’ lives through her brand, IX Style.

Francesca and I talk about how a trip back to Guatemala led her to start her company, the difference between “luck” and “passion for what you’re meant to be doing,” why it’s important to know of all the key players in your industry (and how to track them down), planting as many seeds and ideas as possible, and why getting a “no” doesn’t seem to phase her.

29 Sep 2016Episode 61: Burnout, Stress, and How To Recover + Reset With McKel Hill Of Nutrition Stripped01:00:34

I really wanted to have McKel Hill of Nutrition Stripped on the podcast. But I also didn’t only want to talk about her cookbook (trying to mix it up…per your requests!). So I told her that if she came on, we’d need to explore topics outside of her new book. She was super down for this and knew exactly what she wanted to talk about…burnout and stress.

In this episode, McKel and I talk about how she experienced an extreme case of burnout and what she did to recover from it, how she’s incorporated mantras into her workout routine, what the heck mantras are (if you’re new to them), why working out isn’t always the best for your body when you’re stressed, and what she’s doing to stop the comparison game in her life and career.

06 Oct 2016Episode 62: Creating Your Wellness Toolbox + Understanding Lyme Disease With Ally Hilfiger00:59:15

I’ve seen Lyme disease pop up more and more in the news over the last few months – and wanted to learn more about it. The first thing I did was pick up Ally Hilfiger’s book (Bite Me: How Lyme Disease Stole My Childhood, Made Me Crazy, and Almost Killed Me). The subtitle of the book really grabbed my attention. But it also made me question if this was the work of a publisher doing their job to make me want to buy the book. I wondered if Lyme disease was really that serious. It is. After reading Ally’s book and talking with her, I now understand the power of this disease and how underestimated it is by so many. It can not only affect the physical body of its sufferers, but can alter their mental state, too.

Ally and I discuss why her Lyme disease went undetected for years, how she landed in a psych ward at the age of eighteen because of it, how she began to heal by incorporating a new set of tools into her life, what you can do to protect yourself from Lyme disease, and the biggest lesson she’s learned from living with a chronic illness.

SO excited about today’s guest! I’m talking to model, designer, and body positivity and mental health advocate Jada Sezer.

Jada and I discuss how her beginnings studying childhood psychology fueled her current mission, the difference between creating a brand and a company, why you need the right people to surround you to thrive, why she believes the body positivity movement is only the first step in empowering women, and how we must work on policies and become disrupters in order to create real change.

20 Oct 2016Episode 64 (Part One): Making Periods Safer, Healthier, and Look Kinda Cool with Alex Friedman Of Lola00:34:58

A couple of months ago, I received emails from two brands that are changing the game in the feminine-hygiene category. Both were interested in being on the podcast and both were selling the same kind of product (natural tampons). But they were doing it in such different ways, that I couldn’t decide which one to interview. They were both so innovative (and looked cool, too). So I didn’t choose. I interviewed both. Two interviews about tampons?! Yes.

In part one, I interview the founder of Lola, Alex Friedman. Alex and I discuss the hardest part about building an early-stage company, the process of testing and launching a new product, why there is still a stigma around feminine-hygiene products, and how she’s making big steps to change the industry.

Yes.

In part two, I interview the co-founder of Cora, Molly Hayward. Molly and I discuss how she found her partner and how it wasn’t who she expected, the big difference between natural and organic cotton products, landing a deal with Target after only being in business for six months, and why it’s her mission to make sure that every woman on this planet has access to safe menstrual products.

Here’s Molly:

27 Oct 2016Episode 65: Ashlae Warner of Alchemy Edibles on Doing Business With Mary Jane00:35:39

This podcast guest has been here before. But I just can’t get enough. This week, I talk (again) to Ashlae Warner of…well, a couple different brands. In the episode, Ashlae reveals the new business and brand she’s been keeping secret for a year. And it’s pretty exciting.

We talk about how she felt blogging wasn’t a sustainable career in the long term (anymore) and what she decided to do about it, the lengthy-red-tapey process of starting her new business, why she’s kept it secret, and inside scoop on the other brand that has emerged from starting her new business.

03 Nov 2016Episode 66: Hustling vs. Sleep + The Process Of Grief With Jennifer Snyder01:20:17

Jennifer Syder is this week’s guest. She’s a writer, editor, and the host of the Creating Your Own Path Podcast. This episode got a little raw and emotional, and I’m so grateful that Jennifer was willing to share what she’s going through right now with the hope that it might help someone else.

In this episode, we discuss what it’s like growing up with a disability, how she learned that the process of grief is different for everyone, why it’s important to cut yourself some slack during difficult times, and how it’s OK if sometimes you just want to go to bed.

You can visit the bio on her website to learn even more. I loved my talk with Anna so much – and a big shout to Brandon for introducing us.

01 Dec 2016Episode 69: Aligning With The Real YOU + Using Criticism As Fuel With Amanda Chantal Bacon of Moon Juice00:52:26

Today’s guest is Amanda Chantal Bacon of Moon Juice. I’ll have to say that this is one of my favorite interviews of the season – because of a big piece of advice that Amanda gave. I almost cancelled therapy for the week because of it. It resonated with me that much.

Amanda and I discuss how her wellness journey began with an intervention at a grocery store as a child, how (as an introvert) she’s able to recharge with her busy schedule, why she actually believes triggering negative criticism can be a good thing, and how we all have our own superpower within us.

08 Dec 2016Episode 70: Asking For Money, Standing Your Ground, And Paying It Forward With Emily Fiffer Of Botanica01:04:41

This is the last episode of the season. I’m taking a mini-break, which actually isn’t a break, because I’m going to be working on the new podcast series during that time. So it’s more of a you-won’t-hear-from-me-for-a-few-weeks break.

The new podcast has an official title! It’s called “The Cookbook Deal / Also The Weirdest Year Of My Life” and will be a 7-episode series launching the second week of January. I’ve recorded the entire year of making a cookbook – from getting the deal to recipe testing dramarama to trying to finish my manuscript during a hurricane. I recorded it all. And actually, I’m still recording.

I’ll be giving you the first episode in the OPP feed, but then it will live in The Cookbook Deal feed for the remainder of the season. If you’re signed up for the OPP newsletter, you’ll be notified at soon as it launches. You can do that here, if you’re not signed up already.

OK, today’s guest! I’m talking to Emily Fiffer, co-founder of Botanica (the online food magazine and soon-to-be restaurant).

Emily and I talk about what tough lessons she’s learned from opening a restaurant, the not-so-warm-welcome she’s received from some men in the restaurant industry, the importance of being aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and the celebrity she’d most like to watch eating her food (yes, in a creepy way).

01 Feb 2017Introducing THE COOKBOOK DEAL Podcast00:05:01

In this new podcast series, I’ll be taking you through the roller coaster year I spent pitching and making my cookbook, One Part Plant

With interviews and recordings that span the entire process, I documented the ins and out of how she got the deal and what it’s really like to make a book – from working with an agent and publishing house to managing advance checks and having near meltdowns over timelimes, budgets, and more. And she does it all while navigating unbelievable (and very personal) twists and turns along the way.

Take a listen to a preview of the first episode!

02 Feb 2017THE COOKBOOK DEAL | Episode 00: The Agent + Proposal00:16:33

Welcome to The Cookbook Deal, Also The Weirdest Year Of My Life, a podcast series brought to you by One Part Podcast. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be taking you through the entire year I spent making my cookbook, One Part Plant. I’ve recorded the entire process, all the ins and outs, the ups and the meltdowns, and so many things in between. Things that I could have never expected. We’ll be getting into that weirdness and also the actual process of making this book in the coming episodes. I recorded it all. And I mean, ALL.

But in this first episode, it’s more of an introduction. I wanted to give you a little background into what needs to happen before you’re able to get a book deal. Because those are the questions I get asked most. How do you find an agent? How much do you pay her? How do you make a proposal? How long does it take from writing the proposal to getting the deal? And the most common question after someone finds out I’m writing a book for a major publisher…how’d YOU do that?

I thought this would be a good place to start. So hang tight if you came here for the drama and emotional moments, those will be happening very soon, and often. I promise. As in the next episode.

02 Feb 2017THE COOKBOOK DEAL | Episode 01: Getting The Deal00:23:24

In the last episode, we covered the basics of getting an agent and writing a proposal. If you haven’t heard it, go back.

This week, I’m in New York. meeting with publishers. Trying to make the deal happen. This is also the episode that you’ll begin to discover just how weird I am about money. Which may or may not be a reoccurring theme of this podcast. It may. Ok it is. Go listen.

{ Sweet Potato, Lentil, and Ginger Soup }
by Erica Chidi Cohen from Nurture:

Serves 4

This twenty-minute soup is fiber-rich and soothing. During pregnancy and after birth, your intestinal muscle capacity is reduced, and remains so during the first two to three months postpartum. Adding more fiber to your diet will help shift that sluggishness and keep things moving. Make a batch or two and freeze it.

1 tablespoon organic coconut oil 2 tablespoons fresh turmeric root,
grated or finely diced
4 tablespoons ginger root, grated or finely diced
1 cup [200 g] red lentils, rinsed and picked through
5 garnet yams, peeled and roughly chopped
6 cups [1.4 L] vegetable stock
1/4 cup [60 ml] organic coconut milk 1 bunch fresh cilantro, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
Black pepper

Melt the coconut oil in a heavy medium pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the turmeric, ginger, and lentils. Sauté for 3 to 5 minutes, until fragrant, then add the yams. Toss until the yams are coated and slightly caramelized, 3 to 5 minutes.

Pour in the stock and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat and simmer uncovered until the lentils and yams are tender. Remove from the heat, then mix in the coconut milk and cilantro. Season with the salt and pepper to taste and serve.
