14 Mar 2025Judith Weis: Unraveling Microplastics in Laundry and Their Environmental Impact | On the House #7400:44:52

When it comes to the environment, aviation, fast fashion, and food waste typically join the usual suspects in conversations, but less frequently discussed are the effects of the average laundry routine. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella consults biological sciences professor Judith Weis to learn more.

Based at Rutgers University in Newark, Judith Weis is a Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences, with over 300 refereed scientific papers and marine biology books to her name. Particularly interested in stresses in estuaries and their effects on organisms, populations and communities, Judith Weis sits on the editorial board for BioScience and has been on the advisory committees for various boards.

In this episode, Judith Weis reveals that the first laws involving microplastics forbade the use of them in cosmetics, and that currently, a major source of microplastics derives from the tiny fibres in synthetic clothing. She highlights that, while the broader ecological impacts of microplastics have not been clearly established, they have been found within human bodies.

Together, Marie and Judith Weis weigh up various ways to reduce microplastic shedding during laundry without tossing our already-owned synthetic fabrics. So, tune in this week for expert insights on the best environmentally friendly laundry practices to exercise at home!

In this enlightening episode, Gabriella and Julie take us on a journey through the world of sustainable home landscaping. Julie shared her secrets on how to create a no-maintenance garden, emphasizing the importance of working with nature rather than against it. Discover why Julie is fond of bugs and learn about her popular mushroom-hunting program.

But that's not all – Julie also sheds light on the critical role of geography in your garden and why ignoring it can lead to unexpected consequences. If you're passionate about environmental conservation and want to transform your home's landscape into a thriving, eco-friendly oasis, this episode is a must-listen. Get ready to explore the intersection of responsible land use and environmental stewardship with Julie Travaglini.

20 Jun 2024Dr Dorina Pojani: Housing Affordability Crisis — Understanding the Challenges | On the House #5501:06:09

Housing is a basic human need, yet a lack of affordable housing perpetuates a housing crisis affecting over a billion people worldwide. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra chats with urban planning associate professor Dorina Pojani to learn more about its challenges.

With research focusing on various aspects of the built environment, including urban design, transport, and housing, Dorina approaches her work from a feminist perspective. Over the years, she has held guest teaching and research positions in Austria, Chile, Italy, and Oman, and worked as a consultant for various United Nations agencies. But apart from that, she’s been published broadly in non-academic outlets, including The Conversation.

In this episode, Dorina shares that the housing affordability crisis affects people’s day-to-day lives, from having a lower budget for food, and education, to reduced access to medical services and health insurance, as well as general stability. She reveals that the culprits of the crisis are the sheer lack of houses, along with an excessive number of investment houses.

Together, Gabriella and Dorina weigh up potential solutions that individuals can turn to in the meantime, some of which include flexible budgeting, downsizing, negotiating rent, cohabiting and moving further from the city. So, tune in today to equip yourself with a comprehensive understanding of one of society’s most urgent dilemmas!

04 Nov 2022Louise Dunham: Division of Housework | On the House #400:41:41

Between work, kids, keeping active, and (occasional) socializing, who has time to be at home to accept a package? Or sit around at home waiting for the plumber to finally show up?

On this episode of On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella is joined by Louise Dunham, the CEO of Placement Solutions, Just Family Payroll Pty. Ltd., and Nurture Training College. Louisa had the great honor of being on the APNA awards committee and giving Barbara Kline of White House Nannies in Washington, DC, the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, Louise won two prestigious awards from the Association of Premier Nanny Agencies, based in the United States. The first award was for leadership, presented to Louise for her 31 years of leading the industry and encouraging them to do better. The second was for Excellence as an Agency. This honor is particularly noted because it is the first time 2 awards have been won by one Agency in the same year, and it is the first time the award has been presented to a non-American Agency. In 2017, Louise published a book called The State Of The Nanny, a definitive look at this sector of the childcare industry. Louise was VP of the INA (International Nanny Association based in America). She chaired the Ethics Committee from 2012 until early 2017 and was the first non-American on the board. Gabriella starts this conversation by getting to know Louise’s favorite food and a recent book she has read before talking about the division of housework and how household managers can help in any home.

Gabriella and Louise also discuss three good things about dividing housework practices so that everyone can organize their homes well.
