01 Dec 2023Crabby Appleton : Michael Fennelly Talks about the 1960s, The Hit Go Back, The Doors, Jeff Beck01:00:42

Elektra Records Artist Crabby Appleton - Vocalist, Guitarist Michael Fennelly Talks about the 1960s, The Hit Go Back playing with The Doors, Jeff Beck and lots more! In this captivating episode, we delve into the musical journey of Michael Fennelly, a pivotal figure in the 60s music scene and a member of the iconic band Crabby Appleton. Born in New York and raised in Pennsylvania and Westfield, New Jersey, Michael's passion for music was ignited early. He started guitar lessons at nine and, by 17, found himself hitchhiking to Los Angeles, where his musical career began to take shape. In the vibrant clubs of LA, Michael's talent caught the attention of Curt Boettcher, a renowned songwriter and producer. By 1967, he was an integral part of Boettcher's studio collective, contributing his skills on the electric sitar and vocals to Sagittarius's album "Present Tense." His journey continued as he became a key member of The Millennium, a sunshine pop group formed by Boettcher, showcasing his multifaceted skills as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter. 1969 marked a significant turn in Michael's career when he joined Stonehenge, a band he would soon lead as the frontman, renaming it Crabby Appleton. Signed to Elektra Records, the band released two albums, with Michael's songwriting evolving under the influence of artists like Neil Young and Stephen Stills. Their hit single "Go Back," penned and sung by Michael, climbed to No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970, cementing their place in the music world. Post-Crabby Appleton, Michael embarked on a solo career, releasing two albums. "Lane Changer," recorded in England with Chris White of The Zombies and featuring members of Argent, showcased his evolving style. The album also featured a standout performance by Jeff Beck on "Watch Yerself." His second solo venture, "Stranger's Bed," was recorded in Los Angeles, capturing the essence of the city's vibrant music scene. Despite the challenges in his solo career, Michael's contributions to music remained significant, including his collaboration with Steely Dan, where he sang the high harmony on "The Boston Rag" from their album "Countdown to Ecstasy." Join us as we explore the rich tapestry of Michael Fennelly's musical legacy, from his early days in the 60s to his enduring influence in the world of rock and pop. It's a journey through the heart of a musical era that continues to resonate with fans across generations.

15 Nov 2022Deborah Bonham and Peter Bullick in Conversation with Phil Aston00:48:40

The Bonham - Bullick Interview - Now Spinning Magazine Podcast

In this episode of the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast I am delighted to be joined by Deborah Bonham and Peter Bullick.

In the interview they talk about their new album the current tour, growing up with John Bonham, Bad Company, Free and playing with Paul Rogers and lots more.

Deborah Bonham has established herself as one of the finest blues, rock and soul singers the UK has produced. A string of critically acclaimed original album releases, captivating standing ovation concert performances at the Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium and on the USA Stars Align Tour with Paul Rodgers, Jeff Beck and Heart’s Ann Wilson, have continually followed her while also garnering rave reviews. “Strong voiced, personable and quite the rock & roll singer. This woman, Deborah Bonham (the sister of the late Led Zeppelin drummer) earned a standing ovation at the end of her set, clearly a welcome addition to the tour.” (Stars Align Tour, Holmdel, New Jersey) – Elmore Magazine

Belfast born guitarist Peter Bullick, lauded by the press for his passionate and exceptional playing, paid his dues playing clubs and theatres across the UK and Europe for many years. The constant touring allowed Peter to develop his own style while holding dear guitarist Rory Gallagher and others who were a big influence on his playing. Of all the guitarists that influenced Peter it was Paul Kossoff with whom he connected with the most. Years later Pete’s playing would not go unnoticed by none other than Paul Rodgers who selected Pete and the rest of Deborah’s band to back him on his Free Spirit concerts and tours of the UK and USA. “Guitarist Peter Bullick constantly showed why Paul Rodgers touted him as a replacement for Kossoff should Free ever reform. His bluesy but always economic fills and solos lit up the stage.” – Tight But Loose

21 Nov 2022The Captain of the Lost Waves In Conversation with Phil Aston 01:01:28

The Captain of The Lost Waves - Interview Mysterium Tremedum by The Captain of The Lost Waves.

This is a pastoral PROG album that mixes elements of ELO, Tears For Fears, Japan, Tangerine Dreams to make a quite remarkable album. 'The Captain' talks about spiritual energy, self-identity, melancholy and depression and how music has helped him through some very difficult periods of his life.

This is visceral music for the mind and body, full of dreamy verses, life affirming choruses and sheer audacity. Where melodic invention meets alternative folk, progressive, world and ambient sounds. Described by Tom Robinson (BBC6 Music) as “…completely extraordinary…”, Captain of the Lost Waves exceeds the average and makes the impossible possible. A storyteller by nature, his music connects with listeners as he shares intimate musical tales within genre-defying melodies. This is my introduction to Captain of the Lost Waves, but the UK-based Captain has been turning heads across the globe featured on Hollywood Digest, The Huffington Post and Rock N Reel (to name a few).

Recently Martin Popoff published his top 20 Deep Purple Steve Morse moments with Goldmine Magazine and I did mine for the Now Spinning Magazine website and on the Now Spinning Magazine Youtube Channel. We both realised how much more difficult this was compared with the early albums. This was not due to the Morse period albums being lesser quality, far from it. But the music is much more complex and there is so much going on. We also wanted to look at each of the albums and even discuss how we as fans have also changed in the time we have to listen to albums like we did when we were younger. 08 Jun 2023John Young From UK PROG Rock Band 'Lifesigns' Talks to Phil Aston - The Now Spinning Magazine Podcast00:54:18

John Young From Lifesigns - The Now Spinning Magazine Podcast On this episode I am delighted to be joined by John Young from PROG Rock band Lifesigns John is celebrated musician known for his incredible versatility and contributions to the progressive rock scene. He's a songwriter, a keyboardist, a vocalist, and a composer who has worked with a diverse range of artists, from Steeleye Span to Bon Jovi. Lifesigns is a fantastic band band who I would describe as English Pastoral Prog, for those of you new to the band who are looking for a reference point I would say if you are a fan of Early Genesis, Camel, Flying Colors, Transatlantic, Neal Morse, The Tangent you would be pretty close! Lifesigns, debut album made waves in 2013, even making it to the UK top 100 album chart. The band began touring in 2014, with Jon Poole stepping in for Nick Beggs, and Niko Tsonev joining the lineup. Their performances at major festivals and events, including Cruise To The Edge and Night of the Prog, were notable highlights. The band released a live DVD and double audio CD, Live In London, recorded at Under The Bridge at Chelsea Football Club. Their second album, Cardington, launched in 2017, was a crowd-funded success, featuring guest appearances from renowned artists and reaching the top ten in the Amazon national chart. Lifesigns continued to tour and perform live, releasing the single Impossible in 2020, which introduced them to a broader audience. The band underwent a lineup change with the departure of Frosty and the arrival of Zoltán Csörsz in 2020. Despite recording their album Altitude remotely, the band's synergy was palpable, leading to a successful live performance on Cruise To The Edge in 2022. Their summer 2022 tour resulted in a double live album, to be released in July, with a blu-ray to follow. The band are about to embark on a European Tour and then start writing and recording their fourth studio album.

08 Oct 2021Sarah McQuaid In Conversation with Phil Aston - (Singer Songwriter from Cornwall)00:53:02

As you know I spend a lot of time with rock-driven music and then something comes along that completely floors me.

The St Buryan Sessions by Sarah McQuaid is already in my top 5 albums of the year. It is just spellbinding.

If you like Joni Mitchell, John Martyn, Kristin Hersh, Janis Ian and Eva Cassidy then give this a listen.

One member of the Now Spinning Magazine Facebook Community described Sarah's voices as being like melting chocolate, that is a very good description.

In this Podcast Sarah talks about the new album and her career so far.

Sarah also talks about her love of Nick Drake, John Martyn and Pentangle. (Both Pentangle and Nick Drake have been featured on the Now Spinning Magazine Website).

“One of the most instantly recognisable voices in current music … Shades of Joni Mitchell in a jam with Karen Carpenter and Lana Del Rey.”

—Neil March, Trust The Doc

“She reached parts other singers fail to do ... There is emotion, beauty, passion and musically great arrangements and fab playing. It’s a complete package. I loved the show and was very moved.”

—Rob Bozas, Bozas International (Publisher, Peter Gabriel/Real World)

“Captivating, unorthodox songwriting … layered satin vocals ... enthralling, harrowing arrangements … a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”

—PopMatters

“Her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever.”

13 Mar 2022Rodney Matthews in Conversation with Joe Geesin - Album Cover Artist 00:55:55

On this Episode, I hand over to Now Spinning Magazine Collaborator Joe Geesin who went to visit artist Rodney Matthews to talk about his latest projects.  Phil Aston

Rodney Matthews' art has always fascinated me, ever since I acquired Nazareth's No Mean City in the early 80s, and I enjoyed his work on other albums I loved, largely Magnum, Praying Mantis and Eloy. I started collecting his other work and mentioned this in Record Collector in the early 00s, which lead Rodney to contact me, and we have remained friends ever since.

On this Episode I hand over to Now Spinning Magazine Collaborator Joe Geesin who went to visit artist Rodney Matthews.

On Saturday 5th March I had the opportunity to visit him and his wife Sarah at their home in a remote part of Gloucestershire (roads where cyclists would have trouble passing).

As we sat drinking tea and eating cakes, he had lots to discuss, some off the record (and will remain as such), but he was keen to talk about the current Yendor books and forthcoming animation (which may appear on Amazon Prime), and also to clarify the situation with Magnum and why he didn't provide the artwork, as untrue rumours seem to be being taken as fact.

In passing he also related a story about Magnum and Jet records, and I've always been aware of his love of nature and his religious beliefs, both of which are prominent in many works. With this background knowledge, and that of the second rights work (the return on album covers alone is diminishing), I was able to steer the interview.

If it sounds like two old dudes on a couch having a conversation that happened to be recorded, it was!

Joe Geesin

Thank you to Joe Geesin and our guest Rodney Matthews

16 Feb 2022Simon Mayor and Hilary James in Conversation with Phil Aston - Music with a Folk & Classical Twist00:28:15

In this episode I am joined by Simon Mayor and Hilary James who talk about their new album 'When Summer Comes Again'.

I reviewed this album in my first 'New Music Round Up' Feature on the Now Spinning Magazine YouTube Channel and Website.

I described it as music that conjured up relaxing on a lazy Summer's day while enjoying a glass of crisp white wine. The is pastoral folk music with a Classical edge.

Simon and Hilary describe themselves as 'folk music musicians' but they also cover classical music on the album making it an electric combination that is at once enjoyable and very varied.

In the interview, they talk about how the album came together, how they met and their plans for the future. This podcast follows very well the one I did with Sarah McQuaid. The Song 'Buttermere Waltz' has been on the Now Spinning Magazine playlist for a while now, it is a wonderful track.

‘Superb instrumentalists, Simon Mayor is an acclaimed mandolin virtuoso, as well as a fine guitarist and fiddler, and Hilary James plays mandobass and guitar. Her elegant, articulate voice, however, is her greatest asset and a compliment to Mayor’s gentle, friendly baritone.’

09 May 2023Which Heavy Metal guitarist was the bridge between Ronnie Montrose and Eddie Van Halen? - Now Spinning Magazine01:01:31

Which rock guitarist was the bridge between the first ‘Montrose album in 1973 with Ronnie Montrose and Eddie Van Halen and the Van Halen debut in 1978 ? In this exciting Podcast I am joined again by Musicologist and Rock Writer Martin Popoff where we look at the influence of the first Montrose album and and the four years in between before the first Van Halen album arrived and changed everything in 1978. Being based in the UK I have focused on guitarists from the USA as I was already a huge Ritchie Blackmore for example and Montrose was the first real Heavy Metal album from the USA. I put forward the idea that Rick Derringer was one of the most important guitarists during this period outside of the UK rock scene. But was he the bridge between the two? Will Martin agree? What other guitarists and albums will get a mention? Watch the podcast to find out! Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

13 May 2024A Question for Listeners of The Now Spinning Magazine Podcast00:06:04

Hi Everyone,

I have been very lucky attracting guests who are at the forefront of creating music. Many of them of my persocnal music heroes and there are a lot more to come.

However, I want to ask you a question which relates to how and where this podcast should be heading.

1. The musician interviews will continue

2. A new regular episode call 'Meet The Collector' is due soon where I talks to music fans from around the world about their collections

3. For those of you who have seen my music reviews and special features on YouTube do you think these could also be podcasts? I feel I am potentially missing a trick here is broadening the reach of the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast.

4. The way I release my Podcasts is very haphazard would you prefer to have a specific day / time when my podcasts are released so you know when they are due?

Thank you so much for all your support

Please favourite or write a review on whatever platform you listen to my podcasts on. This really does help.

02 Aug 2021Dean Friedman In Conversation with Phil Aston - Now Spinning Magazine00:45:22

The Dean Friedman Interview

You may know singer songwriter Dean Friedman from his 1970s hits 'Lucky Stars', 'Lydia' and 'Ariel', but he has also released some wonderful albums over the years with 'Songs For Grown Ups' and '12 Songs' being two of my favourites.

In this episode, Dean talks about his new album 'American Lullaby'.

“The new album and show, ‘American Lullaby’,” Friedman explains, “reflects my personal take on all the crazy stuff that’s been happening, in America – and around the world. Like all lullabies, it’s filled with tales of dark deeds and disaster, but couched in soft, gentle tones, meant to soothe and comfort the listener, while gently bracing them for the potential terrors that await. The Fringe show will be my chance to perform the songs as well as tell the stories behind the songs, all of which were inspired by the shared global trauma we’ve endured during these past six years of harrowing political and social upheaval.”

Dean also talked about his forthcoming ZOOM Tour at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and his favourite Joni Mitchell album.

Tygers of Pan Tang - Robb Weir Interview with Phil Aston

Robb talks about the Fantastic new album from the Tygers of Pan Tang 'Bloodlines' as well as the early years, going through the classic albums, the difficult 90s and the rebirth of the band following an epic appearance at Wacken in 1999.

Since then the band have gone from strenght to strenght constantly pushing themselves. The previous album 'Ritual' was a high water mark and I did wonder how they were going to top that, but I can safely say they have.
