11 Mar 2022What I miss About Living in Italy00:23:46

Yes, I have no problem admitting I do miss living in Italy, it's only natural. Life in Italy was an amazing opportunity to be able to really get a proper feel for the country and to learn about all the details that you would miss if you were only there on a trip. Italy is a country that could take a person a lifetime to truly get to know, and I'm glad that I did have the past 5 years there if only to get a taste of what that lifetime could look like. Since moving to Portugal, I've had the opportunity to reflect on my time there and realize what it was that had really become part of my life and lifestyle, what little things through the day that were influenced by my ancestry as well as my experience in the country that they came from. My life in Italy is something that has left me with many wonderful memories to look back on, good times with great friends, food, travel and experience the day-to-day realities of what things are like after moving to Italy.

25 Jun 2021The Move To Rome Italy To Build a New Life and Business00:33:40
Adam decided with his wife and children to move to Rome Italy to build a new life for themselves seeking what the Mediterranean lifestyle has to offer. Living in Rome Italy didn't go to plan for Adam and his family due to the events of 2020 and Adam eventually being laid off. After that major life change, Adam and his wife decided that they would build a language school as well as a consultancy business. I've found Adam's situation leading him to teaching English and Italian in Italy fascinating and respect how he's been able to take an unexpected turn of events and màke a U-turn and build something else. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter Rafael Di Furia and Adam Muri-Rosenthal, two expats in Italy discuss what life is like in Italy and touch on the subjects of how to find work in Italy, opening up a business in Italy, cultural differences between the USA and Italy and about Adam's experience with moving to Italy with a family.
23 Dec 2022Why you Should Move To Portugal - According to AI00:24:50

Living in Portugal has been quite an experience. I can say that overall I'm glad that I came... moving to Portugal was definitely the right choice for me. Life in Portugal has presented many fun moments and unique experiences, with more than plenty to continue to keep exploring. For me personally, the choice to live in Braga as an expat has been great. It's a fun little city that presents a laid-back lifestyle while also being liveable with enough going on to keep you entertained throughout the year. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll share some of my thoughts on expat life and living in Portugal after my first year living in Portugal.

19 Apr 2024What I Love About Living in Portugal - Expat Life in Portugal00:20:29

Considering moving abroad? Portugal offers an ideal blend of lifestyle, safety, and ease of settling in for expats. Known for its relaxed pace of life and community-centric culture, Portugal is an attractive option for those seeking a balanced expat experience. The country’s bureaucracy is notably more navigable compared to many others, easing the transition for newcomers. With excellent connections to the rest of Europe, Portugal is perfect for expats looking to explore further afield while enjoying a high sense of security and welcoming local interactions. For those thinking about making the move, Portugal represents a compelling choice for living abroad. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by dual citizen expat podcaster Rafael Di Furia, we'll talk about the tangible benefits of expat life in Portugal, from the ease of integration to the personal freedoms and security that enhance daily living in this culturally rich country. 02 Apr 2021Cruise Ships Banned From Venice & Lockdown Extension/Health Situation Updates00:20:44
Are cruise ships banned from Venice finally for good? What's going on with the lockdowns in Italy? In this expat in Italy episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll go over these subjects as well as talk about mandatory vaccinations for some Italians. For years the locals of Venice have been pushing for a city without the monstrous ships towering over the city putting it at risk of damage to the foundations of the city as well as the buildings and docks. There have been movements such as 'No Grandi Navi' pushing for the large ships to not be allowed in the city. It seems that may now be a reality. But how will that affect the city of Venice? In this episode, we'll also talk about the lockdown in Italy and the extension of the lockdown.
19 Jun 2020Falling In Love With Someone From Another Country00:22:10
In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, it's time to talk about falling in love with someone from another country can be a wonderful and exciting experience. But is it for everyone and will you find your right match? I often get emails and DM's asking about dating an Italian, how to get an Italian man, dating an Italian woman and so on... Having lived abroad for more than a decade there are a few things I've noticed that seem to ring true. Expat life comes with new adventures that have their ups and downs, and dating as an expat and dating someone from another country may become part of the overall living life as an expat in Italy, or you may never even have to leave your own country. In this video I wanted to talk not only about life in Italy and dating in Italy, but also about living abroad and dating abroad as a broader subject.
18 Nov 2022Is it TOO LATE to move to Portugal?00:13:01

It's a simple question with a complicated answer, and there are other questions connected to the subject that I believe are also important to ask and analyze to figure out if it's too late for an individual and their specific set of interests/circumstances to move to Portugal. In reality the answer to the question could vary from person to person. To have an easier transition in to expat life in Portugal, it's not just the legal aspects of your move abroad that will have an impact but also some of other practical external influences around you. In this living abroad expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll approach the question and get into if it is too late to move to Portugal or not.
00:00 - Opening thoughts / Intro
00:41 - The quick answer…
01:24 - It’s not necessarily too late because…
02:34 - Is moving to Portugal worth it?
03:48 - Is it difficult to adjust to life in Portugal?
04:42 - Integration, worthy goal, but difficult to reach…
07:48 - Is it worth considering other countries before you move to Portugal?
09:45 - But is it actually too late to move to Portugal?
12:27 - Final Thoughts / Outro

13 May 2022Working Online as a Digital Nomad In Europe in an AirBNB or Hostel00:18:17

Before starting life as a digital nomad, it is important to consider how you will be able to not just work online but also most importantly how you will be able to connect to the internet in order to work remotely as a digital nomad from an Airbnb.  For those individuals who rely on a solid online connection, it's important to look at all of the options in front of you for whatever country you may be moving abroad to during your life as a digital nomad... and it is even more important to have a backup plan for whatever may happen... Beyond simply connecting to the internet, you also have to consider the space around you and how conducive to your work it will actually be. Is working from a beach something that you're dreaming of? Have you ever tried to work from a beach? The expectation vs the reality may not fully match the dream.  It may be ‘too much fun’ so that you want to just relax or just jump in the water and forget about the tasks you need to get done for the day. A remote working lifestyle may work for some, but is it what will be the best option for you? When just getting starting in the digital nomad lifestyle there are some aspects worth trying out before jumping in headfirst. In this expat/ digital nomad podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I wanted to reply a comment asking about being a digital nomad in Italy, but I also wanted to speak in general about being a digital nomad across Europe, including my new country of residence and talk about being a digital nomad in Portugal.

17 Jul 2020Moving Abroad - Looking back on 11 years of expat life00:18:32
In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll talk about how moving abroad has been something that completely changed my life. Expat life isn't always easy, which is why in this video I wanted to share with those of you who live abroad or who are thinking about living in another country. Like the saying goes "hindsight is 2020" and now in 2020 I wanted to share some of what I personally would have done differently in hopes that it may help someone else out there. Living abroad comes with some challenges, and one of the reasons why I make my videos is so that others can use my videos about life abroad and living in italy as a "cheat sheet".
14 May 2021Move To Italy - Starting a New Life and Moving to a Different Country00:25:04
To move to Italy or not to move to Italy, THAT.... is the question… In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll answer a question from Pascal who is thinking about moving to Italy with a friend, buying a home in Italy and going to university in Italy. Regardless of studying in Italy or whatever stage of life you are in, many of the choices to consider will be the same. Convenience, location, lifestyle and how you see yourself wanting to live in Italy.
20 Oct 2023Move Abroad Now? Or Wait? - Best/Worst Stages of Life to Live Abroad00:23:26

Whether you're a student, mid-career professional, or nearing retirement, the right time to relocate varies. Students can immerse in new cultures during university, while professionals might find opportunities post-education. Families with young kids can benefit from cultural exposure, but teenagers might face challenges. For retirees, financial stability is key. Sometimes, life presents unexpected chances to move. Whatever your stage, weigh the pros and cons, ensuring your decision aligns with your goals. Consider financial implications, cultural adjustments, and long-term well-being before making the leap.

17 Sep 2021Living Abroad - American Habits I've Left Behind00:27:56
Living abroad is an adventure that takes you on twists and turns. Over time it changes you, who you are and maybe even your daily routines may change too. There have been a number of American habits I've lost along the way. There have been other changes to my daily life I've picked up that have been influenced by my life abroad and especially living in Italy. I noticed many of my habits shifting away from what was once part of my lifestyle. Although I must say the even after moving abroad more than a decade ago, there are a number of pieces of my American lifestyle I haven't been able to let go of while living a life abroad.

Living in Italy has been something that I've seen as a blessing to have been able to do. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll go over a few differences I've noticed between these two countries as an American Expat in Italy.

16 Jul 2021Moving To Italy Checklist - Part 100:21:15
This is my moving to Italy checklist.... well at least part 1 of it. These are some of the major steps that a person would want to do if they have Italian dual citizenship by descent (via Jure Sanguinis / Jus Sanguinis). Because of cultural/mentality differences, there are various steps that many of us would never even think of doing for their move to Italy from the USA. I receive questions such as "how much does it cost to move to Italy?", "how much money do I need to have to move to Italy?" and "what do I need to do as an Italian citizen after moving abroad to Italy". I also see these questions pop up online frequently that I wanted to address them. While much of this video focuses on the situation for a person of Italian descent who has already gone through the process to get Italian citizenship, there are parts of this process that will share similarities with what any person who is from abroad who wants to live in Italy as an expat and enjoy expat life in Italy. For example, instead of getting an Italian ID, it would be necessary to get a carta di soggiorno.
13 Oct 2023Why is Portugal SO Popular with Expats? Should it be?00:17:12

Portugal has become a hotspot for Americans, and it's not just about the sun and sea. While the serene beaches of the Algarve and the picturesque greenery of the north are definite draws, there's more to the story. The political atmosphere on the other side of the pond has some seeking the calm of Portugal's shores. Diving into the local culture is a rewarding journey, though it comes with challenges, especially when dealing with a different bureaucratic landscape. And then there's the allure of European citizenship, a tempting prospect for many. All these elements combine to make Portugal a top choice for many Americans looking for a change... but is Portugal the place they think it is?

21 May 2021Studying Abroad In Italy - LISTEN TO THIS BEFORE APPLYING!01:09:07
Would you study abroad in Italy? Is it something that you've been thinking about? In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I had a great time speaking with Brian Apfel, the host of the Dynasty of Dads podcast. He has been working in higher education for the past 15 years and working with students who wanted to study in Italy. Studying in Italy can be an amazing life-changing experience and in this episode, Brian shared recommendations based on his experiences working on study abroad programs in Italy for students interested in studying in Italy and advice for parents of those students. For many people who are thinking about moving to Italy so that they can live in Italy, a study abroad program in Italy can be a fun way to get a taste of what life can be like here and 'try before you buy'. I know looking back on things I can very much say I wish I had been able to go to school in Italy.

06 Oct 2023The END of NHR in Portugal?00:14:36

There have been recent concerns regarding the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime in Portugal. The Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, mentioned in an interview that the NHR might be coming to an end, causing panic among potential expats and those interested in Portugal. The NHR is not a permanent tax status, and for some may not be worth being concerned, however others may find this could significantly impact their interest in Portugal. The current NHR regime offers an advantageous tax rate for a period of 10 years. While it benefits some, others might find the "regular" Portuguese tax regime more favorable. In this moving to Portugal expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by Rafael Di Furia, we'll look at what to take into consideration with the NHR and these new considerations... 17 Nov 2023Moving Abroad Won't Make You Happy00:12:41

Exploring new horizons by moving to a different country often stems from the pursuit of happiness and self-discovery. However, this journey is more about internal growth than geographical change. True contentment arises from within, and while a new environment offers fresh perspectives, it's not the sole happiness determinant. Such a move invites introspection, revealing personal facets in the absence of familiar routines. Challenges like cultural adaptation and rebuilding social networks emphasize the importance of effective communication and local language skills. The experience also prompts a re-evaluation of values and perspectives, especially noticeable upon returning home. Therefore, considering such a life-changing decision requires realistic expectations, thorough research, and perhaps extended stays in the intended location, underscoring that happiness and self-discovery are processes transcending physical locations. 28 Jan 2022What I would have done differently when living in Italy...00:24:56

There are always the ‘shoulda’, ‘coulda’, ‘wouldas’ one has when thinking about what could have been done differently.  This is what I reflect on in this video; what I would have done differently before moving to Italy. Expat life in Italy taught me a lot which I hope that those of you who are wanting to move to Italy or moving abroad anywhere, might be helped by. I'm so grateful for the time I was able to spend in Italy and am grateful to not be all that far away now in Portugal.  Even if Italy is not where you hope to move to you may find some of the concepts applicable to living abroad in many different countries. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on my time in Italy in hopes that it may help someone who would like to live abroad in Italy.

04 Jun 2021Buy A House In Italy - A worthwhile investment?00:17:09
I often receive messages from individuals who want to buy a house in Italy and want to move to Italy or buy a home in Italy to be able to rent out as an Airbnb / Holiday Rental. Recently I received an email that summed up a number of these questions from an Italian-Canadian thinking about purchasing property in Italy to be able to live in Italy part-time. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I recorded my answer to this email at a cafe in the streets in the small Italian city where I live. The question I received also touched on the subject of flipping a house in Italy, I believe it's important to consider the discussions around moving to Rome, moving to Florence, moving to Naples, and where it may be worth thinking about when moving to Italy.
24 Jun 2022The Best Apps For Expats While Living Abroad00:19:52

During my time living abroad I've found there are certain apps I use more than others that help with day-to-day life and help you to be able to accomplish what you need in your expat life. Having experienced life living in Portugal as well as living in Italy among other countries I can say that it's important to try and figure out how to optimize some of the simplest things as well to be able to connect with what happens where you are and link into what is going on in your location. These apps and categories of apps are some of the ones that I use the most or can recommend using. I would recommend if you haven't yet moved abroad to look out and get a feel for these so you're not, so to speak, trying to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time. Moving to another country already comes with so many things to think about, why ad a few extra things on top.

These were some of the apps/services I mentioned in this episode that I have referral codes/links for:

Airalo - ESIMs for data packages in different countries
Save $3 on Airalo with code RAFAEL837 https://ref.airalo.com/dhht

Rebtel - Make calls to landlines and mobile phones around the world

06 May 2022Living in Portugal vs Italy - Personal Tax Codes (Italian Codice Fiscale vs Portuguese NIF)00:18:00

Having a personal tax code while living in another country can be absolutely vital to making sure you can navigate the various steps you will have to take during your move abroad. I've come to realize there are a number of you who watch/listen to Not Your Average Globetrotter who are considering a move to Portugal or a move to Italy. In this expat podcast episode about living abroad in these countries, I wanted to compare and contrast what many may consider to be a boring topic, but can actually be quite important: ‘how to use the codice fiscale and how to use the NIF’.  It will be a little bit of a brief overview of how to get a codice fiscale and how to get a NIF as well as when to use them.  When living in Portugal you may find that the NIF gets asked for more than the codice fiscale that is used I n Italy.  However,  you do see many similarities between the two personal tax identifiers. When moving to Portugal or moving to Italy having you personal tax number will be extremely important for taking care of some of the most major steps in setting up your new life living abroad and to help things go smoothly. As I've mentioned, I think it's very important if you can get your tax code before arriving in your country of choice so that it's possible to arrive and hit the "ground running" so to speak.

30 Apr 2021Online dating while living abroad as an American Expat00:38:09
With dating apps like Bumble and Tinder, you would think dating would become simplified and much more efficient... no? In this expat audio-only exclusive episode of Not Your average Globetrotter, I'm going to get into another topic that I normally would never talk about on YouTube. The world of dating online has become overly complicated especially with all of the scammers and catfish out there. After recently speaking with Leslie Grant host of the Interstates and Heartbreak Podcast, I decided It was about time to give these dating apps another go. Thanks to this inspiration and jumping back into the deep end of the online dating app world, I found myself matching with a catfish. While I did enjoy the interaction at first, I also found myself becoming quite disappointed when coming to the realization this wasn't who they seemed to be. I'm the type of person who tries to do the best that I can to be upfront and represent myself as I am and I don't like surprises when it comes to dating. I feel it's only fair if that's what I'm looking for I should live up to that and I would like someone to have similar ideas on the subject as well.... unfortunately we live in a world where this doesn't seem to be the consensus....

04 Sep 2020Moving Abroad Illegally... Bad Idea?00:19:09
In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter I wanted to talk about messages I sometimes receive from individuals who are thinking about moving abroad Illegally. Becoming an Illegal immigrant comes with a number of challenges which we'll talk about in this video to try and paint a picture of some potential situations that may arise if you move to another country without a visa or permission of stay. When talking about Italy, if trying to get a permesso di soggiorno for Italy, even when studying in Italy, you will run into restrictions on how much it would be possible to work. The life of an illegal immigrant can be a difficult one.
06 Aug 2021The Italian Green Pass - Update 200:17:32
Since uploading my last episode on the Italian Green Pass (certificato verde), I've continued to receive questions such as "What is the Green Pass in Italy?" "How do I get the Green Pass in Italy?" and about the details regarding where and when it is necessary. Today the green pass has come into effect and in this episode, I would like to continue with the discussion I had on the previous Green Pass episode and what some of the newest updates are as well as talk about how to get the Italian green pass and to whom it is available. Even though I may be burnt out on this subject, I'm grateful that it does in fact make life easier for some of you who are looking for this information. And thank you very much to those of you who continue to come back and a special thank you to those who support the Not Your Average Globetrotter project.

06 Jan 2023Slowing Down - 2 Lessons to Learn from Living Abroad 00:16:42

Living abroad can be a rewarding and enriching experience, but it also requires patience and the ability to slow down. One major cultural difference between the USA and other countries is the fast-paced American culture versus the slower pace of life abroad. The pressure to perform and achieve financial success can also be more intense in the USA compared to other countries. Living in a foreign country can be challenging at times, but it also allows for personal growth and development. By learning to be patient and embracing a slower pace of life, expats can fully immerse themselves in their new culture and make the most of their time abroad. In this expat podcast living abroad episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we discuss the importance of learning to adapt to different cultural norms and the benefits of taking a more laid-back approach to life.

17 Mar 20237 Mistakes Expats Make - While Living & Moving Abroad00:15:32

In this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter I wanted to share my personal experience as an expat in Portugal and discuss common mistakes that people often make when living and working abroad. Whether you're an American or from anywhere else in the world, moving to a new country can be daunting. That's why it's important to be aware of the potential pitfalls to avoid. First and foremost, it's crucial to consider the cost of living in your new location. Underestimating expenses is a mistake many people make, especially if you're coming from a place with a lower cost of living. Additionally, relying solely on technology for communication and navigation is another mistake to avoid. Basic language skills can go a long way when your phone battery dies or when you can't rely on translation apps. Understanding the local work culture and life balance is also crucial to adapting to your new environment. Without going into so much more detail, I'll let the rest be said in this week's episode... If you're considering living and working abroad, whether it's in Portugal or elsewhere in Europe, it's important to be prepared and avoid common mistakes. In to this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter we'll talk about living abroad, expat life in Portugal, and the mistakes to avoid. Don't miss out on the valuable lessons I've learned through my experience as an expat in Portugal.

Where my family is from and why I don't get into the specifics about some aspects of my personal life such as dating.
03 Sep 2021Living Abroad is Overrated00:15:41
Yes, I've said it, living abroad is completely overrated! I will never understand the glamorization of living life abroad and expat life as well as the digital nomad lifestyle. Yes, the individuals may be embracing new places and cultures, but how it's seen as glamorous is baffling to me. I realize it may not be an easy decision to make, and for many moving abroad can seem difficult to make happen. But many people would be surprised at the realities of what it really is to live abroad and work abroad. For some people, it's a great temporary experience for a few months, but how much can you truly embrace in a short period of time. This episode is a follow-up to my recent expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter entitled "Expat VS Digital Nomad - There's a difference!" episode number 205.

12 Nov 20219 Reasons Why You SHOULD Move To Italy00:24:33

I wanted to share 9 of my favorite things about living life abroad as a dual citizen American expat in Italy. Regardless of where you are from, life as a foreigner in Italy presents so many wonderful moments that present a person with so many eye-opening experiences. As I've said so many times, even with all of the drawbacks, complications and dare I say problems that expat life in italy may present, these things are only part of the reason why I feel blessed to be able to call this country home.

05 Apr 2024Moving to Portugal Ain't For The Feint of Heart - Why So Many Expats are Leaving00:14:48

Exploring expat life in Portugal unfolds as a journey filled with contrasts—from its breathtaking sceneries to the rhythm of daily life, presenting both allure and adaptation challenges. The essence of settling in involves more than just scenic views; it's about meshing with the local tempo, which often involves a dance with bureaucracy and finding one's footing in the job market. True immersion goes beyond the surface, requiring a blend of cultural curiosity and resilience. The emotional landscape of living abroad, marked by the distance from familiar faces and places, adds layers to the expat experience. For those contemplating this vibrant yet complex life chapter, embracing Portugal with an open heart and mind paves the way for a deeply enriching adventure, marking just the beginning of an unforgettable narrative in expat living. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by dual citizen expat podcaster Rafael Di Furia, we'll talk about the multifaceted journey of adapting to life in Portugal, from navigating legal paperwork to integrating into the local culture, and how these experiences shape the overall expat adventure and why some who move to Portugal decide to leave. 23 Jul 2021Italy Introduces The New Green Pass Restrictions00:19:13
The Italy Green Pass guidelines and future use has been announced. Even though I haven't been the most optimistic regarding what things would be looking like going forward for life in Italy, I was truly hoping the next update on what's going on living in Italy would be that this is finally all over... Unfortunately, we're not out of the woods yet. It has been announced what things will look like in Italy with the new "Italy green pass" at least until the end of 2021 for individuals who would like to take part in events and social activities indoors. It's been interesting to see how these new rules have been put together. Things seem to be a lot less restrictive than what I would have expected in some ways, and I truly hope that the right choices have been made. As time goes on, I'll be keeping a closer eye than usual on the Italy covid updates and the new "vaccine passport"

To move to Italy or not to move to Italy.. that is the question. Whether you want to live in Italy or simply move abroad somewhere else, there are a multitude of factors to consider. In this episode, I wanted to speak about some of the "breaks" of the ‘make it or break it’ factors that people often overlook when they consider living abroad in Italy or just simply expat life in general. It's worthwhile to understand the realities of expat life and both the wonderful and not so wonderful things that come along with living in Italy as an American expat.

29 Mar 2021Working In Italy & Living in Italy - From an Italian Perspective01:02:40
I've been talking about working in Italy and living in Italy for years now, but in this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we will speak with Mattia Morelli the host of the Practicamente Inglese podcast, one of Italy's top podcasts. Mattia is from Pescara, Italy and lived in London, England for 6 years. After his life abroad he and his family decided to move to Italy, back to his home town. In this episode, Mattia and I spoke about not only what it's like to live in Italy and also what it is like to work in Italy; comparing the differences between working in Italy and working in the United States. We also discussed what he enjoys about living in Abruzzo with the sea and mountains so close to one another.
10 Sep 2021Responding to Sonia Candy's Response To "What I Hate About Italy... well... sort of"00:37:52
Living in Italy can present many challenges... but none of the topics in this video could even remotely be considered among them. Yesterday I was quite surprised to find that one of my videos had received a video response, from someone who I'd never had any contact with before. It just so happens the episode in question has been one of the most misunderstood episodes I've ever made "What I Hate About Italy... well... sort of" . But I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Sonia Candy (@SoniaCandyInsta on Instagram) actually was there to join in on the conversation and have some fun. I truly find it shocking how many people have misunderstood that video and think that these are major issues even after I said I laugh about these things and really almost never think twice about them.... I feel truly blessed to be able to live in Italy and make it my home and glad that Sonia was able to laugh along with me at some of these things. Covering everything from Italian food to living in Italy / expat life in Italy to Italian-American vs Italian culture and more, I can say this for me was definitely a fun episode to put together.
18 Sep 2020Moving To A Small Town - Life in Italy00:23:08
In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we go a little bit deeper into a subject I've touched on in many of my videos. I've talked about finding a town that has a good balance between not being too small and not too large. But in this video, I wanted to go into more detail why moving to a small town in Italy is something that I prefer. When moving abroad there are many details to take into account and how small or large of a town/city can be a major consideration for many people when creating an expat life in Italy. For some, a small village in Italy could be the perfect place to relocate to, while for others moving to Milan or moving to Rome can be the perfect option for an expat in Italy. Moving to Italy for a small town life can be nice but also may come with drawbacks depending on where you end up, but or course a country life may just be the right choice if you're up for it.
14 Jan 2022Getting Phone & Internet In Portugal - Overview Guide00:30:09

Before moving to Portugal, I did a lot of research to make sure I was able to arrive and remain "connected". Because I have been working online for the majority of the past decade and now living in Portugal as an expat in Portugal, I have been able to continue my search to find what is the best internet in Portugal, where to get a sim card and test out some of the various options for getting mobile phone service or even home internet and TV in Portugal. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll go over what you will want to keep in mind when looking at phone, internet and mobile services here in Portugal.

07 Jan 2022Living In Portugal - My 1st month in Braga vs Living in Italy00:30:52

I've been living in Portugal for just over a month so far and have been enjoying living in Braga. There are many differences I've come to see when comparing life in Portugal to living in Italy; everything from the people and culture to the food and even opening a bank account in Portugal and renting an apartment in Portugal. Even though moving to Portugal was something I hadn't planned to do, I'm quite grateful for the opportunity I've been given to explore living here. As a expat in Portugal I'm quite excited to get to know this country even better and explore more of this beautiful country.

22 Dec 2023Why I'm Leaving Portugal00:19:04

Embarking on the journey of living abroad, particularly in European countries like Portugal, encapsulates a spectrum of experiences and challenges unique to expat life. Key considerations include navigating the rising cost of living, especially in urban areas, and understanding the healthcare system, which can be marked by long waiting times and occasional staff shortages. Transportation in densely populated cities adds another layer of complexity for those contemplating car ownership amidst traffic congestion. Language immersion also becomes a pivotal aspect, as the prevalence of English speakers may limit opportunities for deep cultural integration and language practice. Additionally, for expatriates with entrepreneurial ambitions, the business environment in Europe, and specifically in Portugal, presents its own set of hurdles with complex regulations and potentially high operational costs. In this expat podcast episode of "Not Your Average Globetrotter," hosted by Rafael Di Furia, these multifaceted aspects of moving and settling abroad are explored, highlighting the balance between the enchanting allure of a new country and the practical realities that shape the expat experience. 14 Apr 2023The Crucial Lesson I've Learned Moving to Another Country00:17:59

Living abroad as an expat in Italy and Portugal (as well as other places) has taught me valuable lessons about myself and how to adapt to new environments. Moving to another country offers unique experiences, but it's crucial to find commonalities to be able to build bridges with locals. Expat life can present challenges, so assessing if a location aligns with your values is essential. Embracing an active role in self-improvement and focusing on positive experiences help make the most of moving abroad. In this living abroad, expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll go over the importance of self-discovery, embracing cultural differences, and finding ways to connect with people for a fulfilling expat experience.

30 Jun 2023Living Abroad - The Small Things Matter00:14:57

Sometimes the smallest things, like the ease of using your own name, can make a big difference when living abroad. Of course, this is an extreme example, but there are many little things that can pile up throughout your expat experience after moving abroad. Before making a decision to rent or buy property in another country, spending time living there fully embracing expat life to understand the day-to-day realities is crucial. This is because vacationing in a place often doesn’t provide the full picture of what it’s like to actually live there. The importance of work-life balance is also necessary to consider. For example, in the United States there’s often an emphasis on hustle culture, which can be detrimental to work-life balance. In contrast, other parts of the world might offer more opportunities for a balanced life. However, it's important to recognize that what one person finds appealing in a location might not be the same for someone else due to different lifestyles and preferences and needs. Ultimately, understanding personal limits and what’s needed for a fulfilling life is essential in making such life-altering decisions.

01 Dec 2023Americans Escaping Portugal and Going Back Home00:11:44

The Portuguese government's decision to end the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax scheme brings significant implications for expats living in Portugal and those considering moving to Portugal. The NHR scheme, a major draw for expatriates seeking financial advantages, played a crucial role in attracting foreign investment and skills, thereby boosting the local economy. However, its termination may lead to a reassessment among expats, who might explore relocating to other tax-friendly European destinations. This change could impact Portugal's real estate market and local businesses, which had grown accustomed to the expat community. For those contemplating a move to Portugal or living abroad in Europe, this highlights the importance of considering factors beyond financial incentives, including cultural adaptation and long-term residency plans. The situation serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of expat life and the necessity for thorough research and flexibility when planning to move and settle in a new country. 04 Jan 20195 Misconceptions about living abroad in Italy00:15:51
In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll talk about how life abroad can be an amazing thing. But, unfortunately for many, it comes with some bumps in the road that can come from not fully understanding everything that comes along with the lifestyle change. Even once you are already living abroad there will be plenty that you'll learn as you go. Things which you think might be a big deal when it comes to expat life may end up being the smallest non-issues, and things that you never imagined could make the biggest difference. I know when it comes to my life in italy, even with how prepared I was there were things that came up and there were plenty of things that I'de heard from people. Even what your expectation vs reality is about what you plan to do can make a big difference. Are you wanting to teach English in Italy? Have you ever taught English before? Are you really cut out for that lifestyle? Whether you want to be an expat in Italy or you're ready for that expat life and want to live abroad in another country I wish you all the best of luck!

13 Jan 2023Moving Abroad To Start A New Life00:22:27

Let’s explore the thought process along with some of the pros and cons of moving abroad to start a new life. I will share my own personal journey and experiences living in different countries and cities, including my current experience as an expat in Portugal. We will also discuss the remote possibilities of other countries to live in, in other parts of the world such as South America or Asia. We’ll also get into the considerations of safety, culture, and lifestyle as I think it's important to weigh the decision of where to make your permanent (or even temporary) home. Join me for this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter as we discuss the pros and cons of living in major cities, the convenience of proximity to other European destinations, and other topics such as the importance of being close to family. Hopefully, some of my thought processes may help those who are thinking about moving abroad, or moving abroad again even if you find yourself attracted to different details related to a location or different locations than what I might consider.

03 Mar 2021Living In The Favela of Rio de Janeiro - Expat Life in Brazil with Henry 'Rio' Montalto01:16:34
Living in a favela of Rio de Janeiro and talking about expat life in Brazil is what we will be discussing in this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by Rafael Di Furia (@RafaelDiFuria) with special guest Henry 'Rio' Montalto aka @experience.rio on Instagram. Henry is an American who moved to Brazil and made Rio de Janeiro his home in the Vidigal community, one of the most famous Brazilian 'slums'. Henry has made a full life for himself in Rio and lives there with his Brazilian wife and their son and works as a tour guide showing the 'real' Rio. Living abroad and expat life come with their own challenges, but living in brazil as an expat in one of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro comes with a number of other challenges... but are they worth it? What are the pros and cons of living in Brazil? In the future, I look forward to talking with more people who are living in Brazil as a foreigner and to talk more about moving to Brazil.
17 Feb 2023No More Golden Visa In Portugal (+ AirBNBs & more...)00:14:15

The Portuguese government recently unveiled POSSIBLE new measures to combat the country's housing crisis and high cost of living. The changes include ending the controversial golden visa program, which some argue has driven up housing prices. The government is also considering a ban on short-term rentals such as AirBNBs, which have further contributed to the housing shortage. To incentivize landlords to rent to locals, the government is offering tax breaks to those who convert their properties into long-term rentals.  While not everyone may support these measures, they could be interesting and potentially crucial steps toward addressing Portugal's housing crisis and making affordable housing more accessible to locals. By discontinuing the golden visa program, the government hopes to reduce housing prices and improve the quality of life for Portuguese residents. The proposed ban on short-term rentals aims to boost the supply of available housing, potentially leading to lower prices. The tax incentives that could come for landlords who convert their properties from short-term to long-term rentals could make it more appealing to rent to locals in need of affordable housing.  For current and prospective expats, these changes could significantly impact decisions regarding living in Portugal. As the country works to address the housing crisis. Finding affordable housing in Portugal may become easier. However, some have criticized the tax incentives, arguing that they may benefit landlords who have already profited from the housing market. It is essential to monitor developments to make informed decisions about living in Portugal.  Overall, the Portuguese government's new measures might prove to be a step in the right direction toward addressing the housing crisis. While it remains to be seen how effective they will be, the government seems to be taking the issue seriously by looking at implementing measures to tackle it. If you're an American or expat in Portugal, or if you're considering moving abroad, keeping up with these developments could help you make informed decisions about your future in the country.

This is also huge news for those of you who have been wanting to move to Italy and live in Italy and haven't been able to because of the events of the past year +

12 Feb 2021Expat Problems - Communication Problems00:24:26
Unfortunately, so many expat problems can come from miscommunication. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we will discuss how important it is to know your 'audience' as an expat living abroad. In your expat life, you will cross paths with many different kinds of individuals. It's important to know what topics and subjects are worth discussing and which ones may be worth holding back. From my experience as an American living abroad, I've come to realize that based on my country of origin, there are individuals that will discount my contribution to a conversation, giving a simple reason starting with words such as "Yeah, but you Americans are..." Even as an American in Italy, even more so as an Italian American in Italy... and even more so as an Italian American in Italy with Italian citizenship by descent, there will be those individuals who will never see a person who isn't born and raised Italy as an Italian because, from their perspective and understanding of the world, that simply can't be. Of course, regardless of your location, communication is always key. But is it always necessary... and is less more?
21 Aug 2020Italian Summer 2020 (Ferragosto) - What are things like in Italy right now?00:16:02
In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll talk about Ferragosto time of year, and this year especially has been quite hot. I wanted to share a little bit about what's going on and what life in Italy has been like this summer and film a video outside this week. Summer in Italy can be a time full of fun and relaxation, and even with the current situation, that has not stopped this aspect of living in Italy. In this video I'll also touch on the questions some people have which are "what is Ferragosto?" "is Italy back to normal" "is Italy open".
15 Oct 2021What's so great about living in the USA? - Thoughts After 12 Years of Living Abroad00:16:05

Life abroad has lead me on a journey I never could have imagined.  After 12 years of living abroad, I've found there are fewer and fewer things that I miss from my "old life". But then there are some aspects that I still think about or even miss. Even though moving abroad or even specifically moving to Italy can present many wonderful new things in your life, not every aspect of living in Italy or any country is perfect. I can say though that I'm grateful for what my life in Italy has put in front of me, some countries seem to get certain aspects right and others seem to have different aspects right. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll go over some of the things I miss from the US and things that I wish were the same when living abroad.

08 Dec 2023I’m Moving Back To The USA - Why Expats Give Up00:14:31

Deciding to live abroad, particularly when considering moving back to the USA, encapsulates a complex blend of practical and emotional factors. For expats, the allure of native language comfort, familiar cultural norms, and potential career opportunities often weigh against the challenges of adjusting to a different lifestyle and higher living costs. This pivotal decision in an expat's life requires balancing the ease of established systems, like credit history, with the emotional toll of leaving behind known environments and friends. Ultimately, choosing between staying abroad or moving back to the US hinges on personal priorities, the willingness to adapt, and the pursuit of a balanced expat life. 05 Aug 2023Why Expats Fail and Move Back Home00:10:43

Living abroad can be a thrilling journey, but it's not without its challenges. How can you navigate cultural differences, language barriers, and the temptation to stick to old habits? How can you truly immerse yourself in a new environment living abroad without losing your sense of self?

In my 14 years of expat life and life abroad, I've learned some valuable lessons about flexibility, openness, and the importance of local connections. I've discovered that the key to a successful expat experience lies not just in surviving, but in thriving and making the most of the opportunities that come your way.

But how do you strike a balance between preparation and taking the plunge? How do you avoid the 'expat bubble' and truly engage with the local culture? And how do you navigate the fine line between holding onto your roots and embracing new habits after moving abroad and living overseas? Living in Italy to enjoy the dolce vita is the dream of many around the world. But, only after moving to Italy is when you truly become acquainted with the realities of expat life in Italy. There are so many wonderful aspects to life in Italy, but when you live in Italy and not just enjoying a vacation in Italy, the daily realities of what things are actually like here become much more noticeable. Does that mean every single aspect of what it's like to live in Italy will affect you? More than likely no... however... It is very much worthwhile to be aware of the situation. 25 Feb 2022Life in Portugal - Thoughts After 3 Months (& Speaking Portuguese)00:12:02

If you don't speak Portuguese, this episode is available with subtitles on YouTube.com/RafaelDiFuria

It's kind of crazy to think I've been living in Portugal for almost 3 months now. It's been a lot of fun to re-start life as an expat all over again. So far I haven't had much time to study Portuguese but thankfully, I had some of the language under my belt already. It's undoubtedly made a big difference with my experience moving to Portugal. I can see my limited ability to speak the language improving day by day, as I am learning new words constntly. In this special expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll be speaking in Portuguese, or at least trying to speak Portuguese and share some of my thoughts after 3 months of life in Portugal. It's been quite the journey so far, and I'm quite excited to see where it goes. I've included the mistakes made and my Portuguese is far from perfect, so this episode should not be used as an episode for learning the language.

04 Feb 2022Living in Portugal - The NHR Tax Regime Was Not for Me00:23:17

During the research phase of looking into moving to Portugal, many people come across the NHR (Non-Habitual Residence) tax scheme that makes it very interesting to those who qualify when thinking about living in Portugal. Before my move to Portugal, I did quite a bit of research into how I would continue the work activities that I do and to be able to legally work in Portugal. Opening a company in Portugal ended up being the best option for me. Thankfully everything has been moving in the right direction in spite of it taking much longer to finalize everything than I had hoped. I've been quite fortunate during my adventure to open a company in Portugal... This expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter is dedicated to those of you who are thinking about moving to Portugal and who are also interested in the NHR tax scheme here but are finding it may not be as ideal as you had hoped...

10 Nov 2023Expat Life in Flux - Political Turmoil & Daily Stability00:19:19

The resignation of Portugal's Prime Minister Antonio Costa highlights the importance for expats to stay aware of political changes in their host country. These shifts can impact laws, regulations, and bureaucratic processes, affecting daily life. It's crucial for expats to remain informed and adaptable, as such changes can influence residency, work permits, and access to public services. Understanding these political dynamics is essential for successful navigation and integration into a new country's social environment. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by Rafael Di Furia, we'll discuss how to maintain awareness of and adapt to these political shifts, emphasizing their role in the broader expat experience. 11 Aug 2024Why I Wouldn't Move To Italy00:18:35

Moving to Italy offers an experience full of charm but also comes with its own set of surprises. Living in Italy means adjusting to a different pace of life and unique local customs that might catch expats off guard. As an expat in Italy, you’ll encounter quirks like the August shutdown and irregular billing cycles, which can make daily life feel a bit unpredictable. Life in Europe, particularly in Italy, requires patience and flexibility. Everyday tasks might not always go as planned, but that’s part of the adventure. Despite these challenges, expat life in Italy has a special appeal that keeps many coming back. In this expat podcast episode of *Not Your Average Globetrotter*, we'll talk about navigating these challenges, from dealing with bureaucracy and high costs to adjusting to social customs and the climate. 29 Oct 2021Online Shopping in Italy00:19:30

Like many places in the world, online shopping in Italy is very much available including plenty of options from all around the country.  When shopping online in Italy,  you also have the ability to purchase from domestic sellers which opens up the possibilities of what is available to you when living in Italy. Life in Italy may move at a different pace than many places, however, you do often have fast shipping options available to you which can be quite convenient. Shopping in Italy is a subject I've received questions about for years and in this expat podcast episode of not your Average Globetrotter, I wanted to finally talk about this one aspect of expat life in Italy. Keep in mind the cost of shipping and import fees/tax if you order from abroad, but sometimes options like iHerb and Amazon can be worth looking at with prepaid import duties and taxes.

15 Jul 2022Traveling Around Portugal - Tips & Tricks (+ Where To Fly Into)00:21:09

08 Jan 2021Going To Italy After This Is All Over - How I Would Plan A Trip To Italy00:33:30
Going to Italy is a thought on many people's minds. Especially now in this era of being stuck at home, many of us are dreaming and planning our next adventure. In this video podcast, I'll talk about what I would do if I were to plan a trip to Italy. Whether you're going to Italy alone or with a friend or your family it's worth putting in time to plan your trip, but maybe not too much time so that you've still got new things to discover for the first time after traveling to Italy. Which Airport do you want to land in? Rome, Venice, Milan, Verona... Bolonga? What places do you want to visit? The Amalfi coast, Positano, the Cinque Terre? There's so much to see, do and eat! What are you planning for your trip to Italy?
14 Jul 2023How I see the USA After 14 years of Living Abroad & Expat Life00:25:07

After 14 years of living abroad and enjoying expat life, I wanted to talk a bit about how I see the US now... This week, we'll be taking a look at the USA through an Expat lens... Is the U.S. truly the "leader of the free world", or is that just a perception we've grown accustomed to? One of many topics that are worth thinking about is the education system. Does it really prepare us for life, or is it more about scoring high on tests?

What about healthcare access? Is it as straightforward as it seems, or are there nuances we're missing when comparing American Healthcare with European Healthcare? Another important factor to consider is safety and quality of life, is the U.S. the gold standard, or are there elements of community and culture that we're overlooking in comparison with overseas?

We'll also touch on the topic of zoning. Is it just a mundane urban planning concept, or does it have deeper implications for our lifestyle and mobility? Finally, we'll take a look at the geographical isolation of North America. Is it just a geographical fact, or could it be shaping our understanding of the world in ways we don't realize? There's a lot to unpack, and these are the conversations that need to be had.

In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, hosted by me, Rafael Di Furia, I'll share how I view the US and American culture and lifestyle in comparison with the culture and lifestyle in Europe and elsewhere having been abroad for more than 14 years, questioning everything from its global leadership role and education system to healthcare access, safety standards, connections in local communities, cultural rituals, and the implications of its geographical isolation.

21 Oct 2022Expats Living in Portugal Will Ruin the Country?00:20:14

In short no, I don't believe expats in Portugal or any expats living abroad anywhere will ruin the country where they are... however, I do believe there is the potential to be able to help or hurt the situation locally. Expat life can be an eye-opening experience, and living in another country can really help you learn more about yourself as well as understand and appreciate the world around you in a different way than you might in your home country. Is living abroad for everyone? No... absolutely not.... But because I have been talking about topics to do with moving to Portugal, it's the way I'd like to also frame my ideas on this topic/conversation and how it relates to living abroad in Portugal. In this living abroad expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll continue the conversation from last week's episode and clarify some of what I wast talking about then regarding working in Portugal, and even talk about how the simple idea of tipping in Portugal could lead to a major shift in one aspect of life here even if it may seem to be something so insignificant at the end of the day...

28 Oct 2022They Moved To Portugal After Traveling the World00:26:39

Richard & Kathleen Lo had traveled the world as digital nomads before moving to Portugal. After their experience making the move to Portugal and going through the legal processes to enjoy expat life in Portugal, this nomadic entrepreneurial couple saw a gap in the market that they could fill. They decided to open up Bordr.io, a company that assists expats from around the world who want to live in Portugal by helping them with getting their NIF (the Portuguese tax number) and opening a bank account. In this expat living abroad podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we’ll get to know Kathleen and Richard better by learning more about them and what they do as well as about how to take care of things when making Portugal your home.
