16 Feb 2022Navigating Conversations on Sexual Harassment in Our Sector with Liz LeClair00:36:42

According to a survey done by AFP and the Chronicle of Philanthropy, one in four women have experienced sexual harassment in their nonprofit work; 7% of men reported being sexually harassed on the job; and in 65% of the cases reported in the survey, the perpetrator of the harassment was a donor. What can we do as a sector to change the culture?

My guest this week is proud feminist and fundraiser Liz LeClair. She brings more than 15 years of experience to her role as the Director of Major Gifts at the QEII Foundation in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Liz is a director with Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), and is the current Chair of the AFP Women’s Impact Initiative.

In 2019, Liz published an op-ed with CBC on her experience being sexually harassed by a donor.  She is a co-founder of the National Day of Conversation, a day dedicated to raising awareness on sexual harassment of fundraisers.

In this episode, Liz shares her personal story of sexual harassment as a fundraiser, and how she is working to bring these issues out from the darkness and bring them into the conversation.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Her story of sexual harassment in the workplace and her advice for others in this situation
  • The real reason nonprofits have trouble attracting a more diverse group of volunteers
  • How we can be more outspoken advocates and actively demonstrate solidarity and support a movement towards equity and racial justice within the sector
  • How to start having these difficult conversations with each other, and at our places of work

A Liz quotable: “When you tell me to be nice you are asking me to give up my agency, my power, my opinion. White women, when you are okay calling out misogyny and sexism, but will not (or refuse to) call out racism in our sector you are a part of the problem.”

09 Mar 2022Staying Human-Centered in an Automated World with Beth Kanter and Allison Fine00:34:04

Beth and Allison's new book comes out today! Get your copy on Amazon or ask at your local bookstore.

The use of smart tech by nonprofits exploded during the pandemic. Smart tech is becoming integrated into internal workflows, fundraising, communications, finance operations, and service delivery efforts, freeing up staff to focus on deeper societal changes that need to be made.  The hope is that smart tech may also enable us to turn the page on an era of frantic busyness and scarcity mindsets to one in which we have the time to think and plan — and even dream.

I sat down with Beth Kanter and Allison Fine to talk about their new book, and what it means to stay human-centered in an automated world.

Allison Fine is among the nation’s preeminent writers and strategists on the use of technology for social good. She is the author of the award winning Momentum: Igniting Social Change in the Connected Age, and Matterness: Fearless Leadership for a Social World. She speaks to social change makers around the world, regularly keynotes conferences, is a founding board member of Civic Hall, and is a member of the national board of Women of Reform Judaism.

Beth Kanter is an internationally recognized thought leader in digital transformation and well-being in the nonprofit workplace, a trainer & facilitator, and a sought-after keynote speaker. She is the co-author of the award-winning Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Impact without Burnout. Named one of the most influential women in technology by Fast Company, she has over three decades of experience in designing and delivering training programs for nonprofits and foundations.

Allison and Beth co-authored The Networked Nonprofit in 2010. Their new book, The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human Centered in an Automated World  is available right now wherever books are sold.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • What exactly is smart tech - and how nonprofits can leverage it to free up time
  • How smart tech can make our workflow easier
  • Ways that we can be intentional and ethical in our use of smart tech at our organizations
  • What do we need to consider when we are just starting out

02 Mar 2022How Much Should Nonprofits Spend On Advertising? with Samin Pogoff00:28:24

The answer is... 42. (Listen to find out what that means, and thanks for all the fish.)

In all seriousness, the question is not should our nonprofit have a budget for advertising. In 2022, the more important question is - just how much should we spend, and how do we determine this?  Which channels are most effective for nonprofits? These questions are especially important as social platforms like Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn continue to reduce organic reach across the board.

Samin Pogoff is here to help. A creative storyteller at heart and a data analyst by training, Samin helps mission-oriented businesses and organizations increase their impact through data-driven strategy. Since starting at Whole Whale, she has helped clients like NYC Health and Hospitals, MediaJustice, Scratch Foundation, Mid-America Transplant, Compassion and Choices, Counseling in Schools, and Lung Cancer Foundation of America develop insight from their data and improve their digital strategy. Before joining the nonprofit digital marketing agency Whole Whale, Samin worked as a documentary film editor and producer with works screening at The Tribeca Film Festival and on HBO, VICE News Tonight, BBC World Services, and The History Channel.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Insights from the recent Nonprofit Advertising Benchmark Study
  • What nonprofits get wrong when thinking about and budgeting for advertising
  • How to create a budget for advertising that won't break the bank but will help you get results

16 Mar 2022How to Level Up Your Nonprofit On LinkedIn with Angela Pitter00:30:32

There’s no better place to connect with businesses and donor prospects than on LinkedIn. With 800+ million members, LinkedIn is not the largest of the social networks, but with a specific business focus, it’s an audience worth noticing.

While LinkedIn might initially seem to be useful only for B2B marketing and sales, there are many ways nonprofits can utilize LinkedIn. LinkedIn can provide your organization with networking and marketing benefits, no matter the size.  Nonprofits can find corporate sponsors, attract major donors, share knowledge and learn from others.

My guest this week is Angela Pitter, a LinkedIn and digital marketing expert and the Founder and CEO of LiveWire Collaborative, a digital marketing consultancy. She’s known for building comprehensive solutions that expand and strengthen customer engagements. Services at LiveWire Collaborative include: Online Strategy Development and Implementation for mid-size businesses, Social Media Training for corporations or organizations, one-on-one Executive Coaching, Social Media Analysis, as well as Facebook Ads and Email Marketing.

Angela is a highly sought-after speaker who was recently featured on Chronicle’s, WCVB TV social media segment, has spoken at the Massachusetts Conference for Women, CWE Women’s Business Leaders Conference and Needham Business Association to name a few.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Why LinkedIn is such a powerful tool for nonprofits
  • Ways we can level up our presence and our profiles
  • The difference between Company Pages, Groups, and Personal Profiles
  • How nonprofits can do donor prospecting on LinkedIn without being spammy

23 Mar 2022How to Run a Wildly Successful Capital Campaign with Amy Eisenstein00:34:58

Capital campaigns are usually organized as big, multi year fundraising efforts, designed to get an organization to the next level of programming and service. But it doesn't always have to be about a new building or a renovation.

Capital campaigns can be about technology and rebranding - whatever needs to be done to build the capacity of an organization to jump to another level of service.  You'll know success if at the end of the campaign, your community and your organization looks and feels different than when you started.

My guest this week is Amy Eisenstein, ACFRE. Amy has been a development professional and fundraising consultant for more than 20 years. She is also the CEO of the Capital Campaign Toolkit.  Recognized as a leading expert in her field, she helps small and large nonprofits alike raise millions of dollars through major gift and capital campaigns.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • How to know when or if it's time to run a capital campaign
  • How to decide what to raise money for during a capital campaign
  • What needs to be in place before starting a campaign
  • The very first thing you need to do when starting out

Instagram is a powerhouse when it comes to social media marketing and raising awareness. And with the addition of Instagram fundraising tools, such as the profile Donate button and the Instagram Donation Sticker, it's become one to watch in terms of driving donations.

According to Pew Research, 40% of US adults say they use Instagram - and the platform has a notably strong following with young adults. In fact, a majority of 18- to 29-year-olds say they use Instagram (71%) or Snapchat (65%), while roughly half say the same for TikTok.

It's not enough to lump Instagram into your overall "digital marketing strategy" or "social media plan". Instagram has distinct features that make it work - best practices, strengths, weaknesses, and features like Stories and Reels that people love.

Even if you have been on Instagram for years now, or if you are a complete novice, there are a few tried-and-true ways to gain more followers and to get discovered by even more of your community members.

In this quickie episode, I give you 5 simple tips for getting your nonprofit discovered on Instagram.

30 Mar 2022The Future of Fundraising Events with Claire Axelrad00:36:26

Love them or hate them, fundraising events are here to stay. But in the age of COVID, your events may look a bit different. Virtual, in-person, hybrid - how will your nonprofit know which one to choose? And how to balance health and safety considerations with our very human longing to get back together in person?

In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, I ask fundraising visionary Claire Axelrad, J.D., CFRE, how to manage a fundraising program through times of uncertainty, how to use digital fundraising, and how to change the minds of a board that REALLY wants to continue with an in-person 400 guest gala.

Claire has one of the top-rated fundraising blogs on the planet, and 30 years of frontline development work helping organizations raise millions in support. Her award-winning blog showcases her practical approach, which earned her the AFP “Outstanding Fundraising Professional of the Year” award. After leaving the nonprofit trenches, Claire began her coaching practice and founded the online “Clairification School” – often referred to as the best bargain in fundraising.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • The pros and the cons of nonprofit fundraising events
  • How to make the shift to hybrid and/or virtual fundraising events
  • How to help reluctant staff and board members embrace new ideas for events
  • Trends in the fundraising event space and pitfalls to avoid

06 Apr 2022Moving Nonprofit Boards Towards Racial Equity with Christal M. Cherry & Renee Rubin Ross00:34:06

About 87% of nonprofit CEOs in the U.S. were white in 2019, down from 90% in 2016. Similarly, roughly 78% of nonprofit board members were white in 2019, down from 84% in 2016, according to Board Source, a nonprofit that tracks this information.

In a country where Black and Latino individuals and other people of color make up about 40% of the population, this lack of diversity is a major concern for nonprofits that provide services or advocacy primarily to communities of color, and among those groups whose mission is aimed at promoting race equity.

In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, I talk with board management consultants Christal M. Cherry and Renee Rubin Ross about how we can best move our nonprofit boards towards racial equity.

Christal M. Cherry is a trained fundraiser with more than 22 years of nonprofit experience serving on executive teams, as a liaison with boards, and a confidant to the CEO/Executive Director. Christal has a passion to help transform board members into impactful leaders, and touts fundraising as her ministry - the place where she feels she can make the biggest difference. Christal’s mantra: Fundraising is not an F word. Christal founded and leads The Board Pro, a company that equips board members with the tools they need to effectively govern and help nonprofits to fulfill their missions, scale, and become change agents in their communities.

Dr. Renee Rubin Ross is a recognized leader on board and organizational development and strategy and the founder of The Ross Collective, a consulting firm that designs and leads inclusive, participatory processes for social sector boards and staff. Committed to racial equity in the nonprofit sector, Dr. Ross guides leaders and organizations in strategic plans and governance processes that deepen social change, racial justice, stakeholder engagement, and community strength. In addition to her consulting work, Dr. Ross is the Director of the Cal State University East Bay Nonprofit Management Certificate program and teaches Board Development and Grant Writing for the program.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Their new service for boards, called  Planting the Seeds of Change: A Journey towards Race-Equity Culture
  • The challenges facing nonprofit boards right now
  • How to initiate tough conversations at your organization around racial equity
  • Where to get started if you are interested in learning more about DEI work

13 Apr 2022How to Work with a Marketing Agency or Consultant with Chris Barlow00:31:16

Nonprofits of all sizes are strapped for capacity, and often staff isn't trained in marketing, advertising, or social media. When you lack internal marketing skills, it may make sense to hire a third party to help, whether that be a large agency or a solo consultant. Sometimes this can be more cost effective and less risky than bringing in a new full-time employee - but going outside the org requires more intentionality and oversight to ensure results.

In this episode of Nonprofit Nation, Chris Barlow and I talk about the ins and outs of hiring marketing help, how to keep agencies and consultants accountable, and where to start.

As a teen, Chris believed he’d work in a cause-focused mission or career, but when he had to just “get a job” after college, he surprisingly discovered a passion for business. After over a decade in corporate sales, he realized that while he enjoyed it, he couldn’t see himself retiring in it.

So in 2015 he founded an agency, Beeline, and volunteered with a local nonprofit to help them with their digital marketing. This unexpectedly led him back to realizing the dream he had growing up - that of doing something to serve people and a greater purpose.

Beeline focuses on helping nonprofits expand their mission and grow their donor base through digital marketing, but Chris' favorite skill and privilege is putting his two youngest boys down for a nap every day.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • How do we know when it's time to hire some outside help
  • What questions should you ask a consultant
  • How can you measure success
  • How to convince the board to fund outside help

20 Apr 2022How to Fundraise In A Pandemic (or Any Other Crisis) with Pamela Grow00:33:34

This episode is sponsored by the Donor Participation Project Conference! Join me and dozens of others for a different kind of fundraising event.  Register at www.joindpp.org/conference

In 2020 a tsunami in the form of a global pandemic hit us all. Too many nonprofits were left scrambling, trying to pick up the pieces. Wondering how they were going to replace the $600k their spring gala typically raises. Often left afraid to fundraise, disempowered by well-meaning boards and directors.

We’re still dealing with the changing landscape of fundraising and our sector. But the good news is, donors stepped up. Big time. And thanks to the disruptions of the past two years, we know what works in the midst of crisis!

In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, I ask Pamela Grow how we can best fundraise and ask for support in the midst of a crisis, and how to make this fundraising sustainable in the long term.

Pamela Grow is the publisher of The Grow Report, a must-read weekly email for small shop fundraisers, the author of Simple Development Systems: Successful Fundraising for the One-Person Shop, and founder of The Fundraising Calendar.

Her Basics & More classes have trained nearly 10,000 nonprofits all over the world. Pam was named one of the 50 Most Influential Fundraisers by Civil Society magazine, and one of the 40 Most Effective Fundraising Consultants.

27 Apr 2022Robots Make Bad Fundraisers with Steven Shattuck00:36:52

In some ways, we're in a golden age of fundraising. There have never been more ways to capture attention, rally supporters, generate revenue, and measure fundraising performance than there are today. The accessibility of this technology has also never been greater, even to the smallest charities.

But with all the software, tools, apps and intelligence available to us, why has fundraising performance stagnated? Has technology actually gotten in the way of building a personal connection with our supporters?

In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, Steven Shattuck tell us why robots make bad fundraisers - and how we can apply time-tested principles of philanthropy to the modern technology available, with the goal of keeping the donors we already have, inspiring new donors to give, and maintaining the sanity of our team members.

Steven Shattuck is Chief Engagement Officer at Bloomerang. A prolific writer and speaker, he curates Bloomerang’s sector-leading educational content, and hosts a weekly webinar series which features the top thought-leaders in the nonprofit sector. He is the author of Robots Make Bad Fundraisers – How Nonprofits Can Maintain the Heart in the Digital Age, published by Bold and Bright Media (2020).

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • How technology has gotten in the way of building a personal connection with donors
  • Statistics on donor retention (spoiler: it's bad) and how we can retain more of our donors

They're on a mission to reimagine the nonprofit professional development space, to flip the donor pyramid upside down, and to rename our industry in their spare time.

After dreaming of a full-fledged company aimed at empowering and equipping this generation of nonprofit leaders,  We Are For Good launched in 2020 through their podcast of the same name. Nonprofits, no matter their size or mission, are working to change hearts and minds around important issues every single day.

Whether you are trying to get new members for your performing arts center, to entice people to adopt dogs and cats, or to create advocacy actions around climate change – you are in the business of persuasion.

To persuade is “to move by argument, entreaty, or expostulation to a belief, position, or course of action.”

In his writings on how to become a great public speaker, the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) described three “modes of persuasion”.

These modes – Ethos, Pathos, and Logos –  are the essential elements required to convince your audience of your viewpoint.

In order to collect, craft, and share stories that will move people from passive to passionate, let’s explore how Aristotle’s 3 modes of persuasion can be used to improve our nonprofit storytelling.

Storytelling has been receiving a lot of press lately, as a content marketing tool and as an effective way to engage audiences on social media.

Brands and businesses are getting their stories out there – stories about their origins, their values, their customers.

So why are most nonprofits so bad at storytelling?

I think the reason is that many nonprofit staff and volunteers are uncomfortable talking about themselves. They feel icky asking for support, asking for help, patting themselves on the back and sharing the great work they are doing every day.

This needs to change.

Here are 5 stories that your nonprofit should be telling everywhere you do fundraising and marketing – including social media.

01 Jun 2022Why Nonprofits Should Care About Crypto with Pat Duffy00:35:46

On top of all the other fundraising strategies nonprofits have to master, you may be thinking that the additional hassle of figuring out cryptocurrency donations may not be worth it.

However, 220,000,000+ people use cryptocurrency today. And half of millennials prefer crypto investing to stocks. And in a recent study, Fidelity Charitable found crypto owners to be more charitable than the typical investor, but 46% of these donors noted it was difficult to find nonprofits that accept cryptocurrency donations.

With so many ways for nonprofits to accept cryptocurrency donations, you don’t need to turn away donors who wish to donate their Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other coins. It’s a new technology that is constantly evolving, and it’s understandable if you have some apprehension or confusion about how it all works. However, with so many tools available it is easier than ever to get started.

Pat Duffy created The Giving Block with Co-Founder Alex Wilson in 2018, developing the leading solutions that charities, universities and other nonprofits use to fundraise cryptocurrencies. They quickly established themselves as the leading crypto fundraising experts through the explosive growth of their programs at Save the Children and United Way Worldwide. Over the last four years, The Giving Block has turned cryptocurrency into the fastest growing donation method, founding the industry’s giving pledge, giving days and crowdfunding platform.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • How can a nonprofit get started accepting crypto donations
  • Bitcoin currently being the most popular among cryptocurrencies, how can nonprofits ask for Bitcoin donations
  • What is Blockchain-based NFTs and how can nonprofits use NFTs
  • What are the trends on the next coming years

08 Jun 2022What’s Wrong With Nonprofit Data with Meena Das00:42:24

This episode is sponsored by my wonderful friends at Qgiv! I'll be holding a free webinar with them on July 21 - to go https://www.bit.ly/qgivandjulia and register for free! See you there!

The data we have is flawed. My guest this week, Meenakshi ‘Meena’ Das, writes: “For far too long, we have ignored collecting critical data points, missed creating healthy dialogues around that data, and we have added our biases to all of it — all of it — to perform research operations and take crucial decisions from it.”

What is "good data" and how can we collect it? How can we build inclusive and equitable research and analysis into our programs - to help accomplish our missions and to become more financially sustainable?

Meenakshi (Meena) Das (she/her/hers) is Founder & Philanthropy Analytics Consultant at NamasteData.

She specializes in designing survey-based research tools and analyzing engagement to help organizations find the strategic value of their data. Meena spends her time outside work as a mentor to immigrants and as pro bono research advisor to small shops.

Her two recent favorite projects are working on making data-based research tools more DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) compliant and designing the second season of her podcast “Being and Unbeing an Immigrant” where she wants to bring together the families of immigrants left behind in the home country.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Newsletter for changemakers of the nonprofit industry to learn & share about equity-led data, research, & analytics
  • What “inclusive and equitable research and analytics” means and has to do with nonprofit leaders
  • What kind of data should we be collecting and how can this make us better fundraisers
  • Making data-based research tools more grounded in DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility)

Email still remains the best way to communicate with a large group of people at scale – when implemented in a thoughtful, strategic fashion. And while email marketing boasts a high return on investment for the average nonprofit, you should continuously be working to improve your email effectiveness. Enter email marketing master Liz Wilcox. She is an email ninja sent here to help get your emails delivered, opened, and read -and how to build a community anxious to hear from you!

In this episode, you’ll learn Liz’s best tips on:

  • How to build your list without using ads;

In other words, she now teaches online entrepreneurs to simplify the whole “email marketing thing” and finally master their sales in a way that leverages their personality, vision, and values.

This episode is sponsored by my wonderful friends at Qgiv! I'll be holding a free webinar with them on July 21 - to go https://www.bit.ly/qgivandjulia and register for free! See you there!

Nonprofits often struggle with how to write emails, newsletters, and other copy that can connect with donors. The key? To incorporate vulnerability, warmth, authenticity, and even some silliness and disregard for proper grammar and style. And who best to teach us this style than someone who was in the trenches for years - with extraordinary results!

For 11 years, Julie Edwards was immersed in the world of animal welfare as Director of Development and Marketing, then Executive Director, of a regional selective admission facility. Throughout her tenure, she learned from the best in the field and used this knowledge to take the organization to the next level including overseeing the expansion of public clinical services to $1+ million in annual revenue. Julie built the organization's development and marketing communications programs from the "ground up" taking annual gifts from less than $200K to more than $1 million.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Why donor relations matter now more than ever
  • The essential elements of a donor relations program that actually works
  • How small nonprofits can split their time on donor retention AND donor acquisition
  • Tips to retain more donors and to make them feel acknowledged and happy

This episode is sponsored by my wonderful friends at Qgiv! I'll be holding a free webinar with them on July 21 - to go https://www.bit.ly/qgivandjulia and register for free! See you there!

If you’ve got a Strategic Planning document on a shelf somewhere that was written after an enormous number of meetings but never cracked again, you are in good company. Many nonprofits spend time, resources, and precious bandwidth creating a Strategic Plan - never to look at it again. Yikes.

In an ideal world, a Strategic Plan covers the why and how of your existence, and encompasses broad strategic goals and strategies that you want to accomplish in the near future. It defines what an organization should do within the next two to five years - and how to get there.

But before your nonprofit ventures into the nonprofit strategic planning process, there are several considerations you need to take into account.

Carol Hamilton is an organization effectiveness consultant who helps nonprofits become more strategic and innovative for greater mission impact. She facilitates strategic planning, helps organization’s prepare for executive transitions and provides training.

Carol trains frequently on leadership, strategy and innovation topics and is the host of the Mission: Impact podcast. She graduated from Swarthmore College and has her Masters in Organization Development from American University.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Common mistakes nonprofits make when making a strategic plan
  • How to know if you have a successful strategic plan
  • What are some of the elements that go into a successful process
  • How long is the process and how often to revisit
  • How can we do strategic planning in uncertain times? How can we plan 3-5 years into the future?

Do any of these situations sound familiar?

You know what a difference your organization can make, but your team struggles to accurately and consistently measure the impact. You know that the work you do is layered and complex - and worry about the additional challenges that have been popping up due to the pandemic. You care deeply about making a real difference, but wonder about the impact you’re making in relation to the effort you’re putting in.

Sheela N. Mahajan, the founder of the Nonprofit Science Institute and Host of the Nonprofit Science Podcast. The Nonprofit Science Institute is on a mission to challenge nonprofits to think differently - namely, like scientists - and they are leading the effort in bringing scientific thinking to the nonprofit field.

Sheela coined the term "nonprofit science" to describe the application of scientific knowledge, theories, and methodologies to the function and strategy of nonprofit organizations. In this episode, she gives us tips on how to leverage the power of science for better storytelling and movement building.

17 Aug 2022How to Measure + Increase Your Marketing Effectiveness with Rachel Clemens00:34:12

One year and over 40K downloads! 🥳 To celebrate the one-year birthday of Nonprofit Nation, I created a brand new free resource for you: The Nonprofit Social Media Content Planner. Get your copy here.

Marketing effectiveness can be hard to measure, but we all face increased pressure to understand it and report on it. Where is your marketing working? What opportunities are you missing?

Ultimately, marketing effectiveness equates to marketing maturity.  Regardless of your organization’s size, your marketing ecosystem lives on a maturity spectrum—and where you stand today tells a story of where you’ll end up tomorrow.

In this episode, I talk with one of my favorite marketers, Rachel Clemens. She breaks down exactly how to measure your marketing maturity, and how to move from one stage of marketing maturity to the next. She will also walk us through The Mighty GPS™, a new self-assessment to measure your marketing maturity, from Mighty Citizen.

As Chief Marketing Officer, Rachel spends her days promoting Mighty Citizen's services and thought leadership. She’s been a contributor for SGEngage, NTEN, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. With a background in messaging, branding, and design, Rachel has been a national speaker for conferences across the country.

Happy Black Philanthropy Month! Black Philanthropy Month is about celebrating not only Black organizations but also Black donors, Black foundations, and Black dollars. It's also about allies recognizing their critical role in supporting this movement.

Black-led nonprofits receive substantially less investment than organizations that do the same work but have white leadership. The revenue of Black-led organizations is 24% smaller than their white-led counterparts, and their unrestricted net assets are 76% smaller.

In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, Julia sat down with Floyd Jones to talk about the growing movement of black philanthropy and funding, and why this movement is critical to racial equity.

Floyd Jones serves as the Community & Partnerships Lead at Givebutter, the #1 rated fundraising platform on G2, powering $300M+ in donations for more than a million changemakers worldwide. Floyd leads the Community Team’s growth strategy via partnerships, sponsorships, strategic campaigns, and special events.

Throughout his career, Floyd has worked tirelessly building social impact communities around the world. Collectively Floyd has raised over $1M for grassroots organizations and his work has been featured in ESPN, Wired magazine, NIKE, Whole Foods, NBA2k, and more.

But what comes AFTER you make the ask? How do you manage a donor’s response to a gift request, no matter what they say?

In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, Julia sat down with Elizabeth Abel to learn the top 5 donor response scenarios and how to respond in each circumstance.

Elizabeth is a thought leader in philanthropy and expert in fundraising. She has led capital campaigns and development initiatives that have collectively raised half a billion dollars for education, healthcare, arts and culture, and advocacy organizations.

31 Aug 2022How to Use Grant Writing as A Tool for Change with Catherine Ashton00:37:45

The words we use matter. The stories we tell have an impact. Yet, our grants are often full of old, recycled language and buzzword descriptors that are more than just boring — they’re harmful. Grant writers play a critical role in branding the organization and crafting the ways in which it is presented to funders, and thus they are critical in integrating social justice into fundraising programs - and the overall culture and work of their organization.

This podcast episode explores how grant writers at all stages of their career can ground their grant writing practices in race, equity, and social justice. Catherine Ashton discusses how the ways in which we talk, teach, and practice nonprofit work can uphold harmful systems of oppression - or we can use our writing to further anti-racist, community-centric principles.

Catherine Ashton (she/her) is on a mission to change the way nonprofits raise money. As the founder of Giant Squid Group LLC, Catherine works with nonprofits to land donors, win grants, and fund their works.  She is a sought-after coach, speaker, and strategist locally and nationally, and specializes in helping organizations marry best practices and mission-aligned innovation to drive systems-level change.

21 Sep 2022How to Maximize Fundraising Using AI with Michael Gorriarán00:33:42

As we emerge from COVID, it is easy to anticipate that giving patterns will change, again. Simultaneously, new generations of potential donors are accumulating wealth, and they expect to be engaged as “individuals,” not “donor segments.”

How does a fundraiser navigate these trends?

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and Behavioral Economics Modeling can successfully address these challenges. Careful observation of donor behavior through A.I. modeling services can provide more accurate insights into donor sentiment. Today’s professional fundraisers can use these insights to individually optimize giving at the scale of direct response fundraising, enabling nonprofit organizations to know precisely how much to ask of each donor, at each moment in time, over a lifetime of giving.

In this podcast episode, my guest Michael Gorriarán  will provide insights on the imperative for A.I. services in fundraising, including how it works, what to expect, and how to implement it with integrity.

You will learn about:

  • The opportunity for A.I. in fundraising
  • How to implement A.I. in a way that is free of bias, secure, and respects donor privacy
  • Case studies from peer experiences with A.I. in fundraising optimization

Michael Gorriarán is President of Arjuna Solutions, an artificial intelligence services provider serving consumer-facing businesses. The firm applies behavioral economics modeling techniques through its patented A.I. services to ensure businesses optimize pricing and revenue realization.

05 Oct 2022Fundraising Tips for Very Small Nonprofits with Erik Hanberg00:28:18

The Nonprofit Social Media Summit is BACK! Sign up here to get notified when registration goes live.

There are more than 1.5 million tax-exempt organizations in the United States (National Center for Charitable Statistics), and recent estimates indicate that about 12.3 million people work in the nonprofit sector. It is estimated that three-quarters of American nonprofits have budgets under $1 million but there are many that are even smaller.

In this episode, I sit down with Erik Hanberg, author of four books for very small nonprofits, to find out how small nonprofits can fundraise, where they should focus their limited time and resources, and how to get it all done with a tiny staff (maybe of 1 person).

Erik Hanberg has spent 20 years working with nonprofits. In addition to serving as the director of two nonprofits, he has served as an Interim ED twice and worked for nonprofits in marketing and fundraising. He has also served on boards and committees for more than a dozen organizations, often in leadership roles, and several times during a capital campaign.

He is the author of four books for nonprofits, focusing on nonprofit management, fundraising, social media, and board governance, which have collectively sold tens of thousands of copies. They’ve been praised as essential reads for nonprofits by Forbes.com, LinkedIn for Nonprofits, Kirkus Reviews, and thousands of executive directors and board members.

Do you remember that first in-person event or conference that you had to cancel in 2020? I remember it SO clearly. 😥

I honestly didn't know if we would gather again in person, in large groups.

Would everything be virtual?

Would we be forced to just watch endless webinars on Zoom?

More importantly - how can we make virtual professional development better? And not just in terms of educational content, but the actual experience itself?

Tim Sarrantonio is on a mission to change the way we learn and the way we create educational experiences for nonprofits. As the Director of Corporate Brand for Neon One, Tim speaks and writes on everything involving generosity, technology, and the trends in the social good sector.

In this special episode of Nonprofit Nation, we explore the ways that nonprofit professional development has changed in the wake of the pandemic and why we have both chosen to invest in virtual conference experiences.

Tim is one of my closest friends and colleagues, and his passion for turning the status quo on it's head and truly helping nonprofits learn and network is unmatched! I recommend you subscribe to his LinkedIn Newsletter, Connected Fundraising Weekly.  He lives in Niskayuna with his lovely wife, three lovely daughters, and two perfectly fine cats.

09 Nov 2022How to Attract & Keep Fundraising Talent with Chad Barger00:30:16

Tickets are still available to next week's live workshop, How To Plan Your 2023 Social Media Marketing Calendar. Sign up here!

First, the bad news.  34% of nonprofits lost fundraising staff in 2021.

Fundraisers only stay on the job for an average of 16 months.

85% of fundraisers expect to change jobs within the next two years - with more than one-third expecting to leave fundraising altogether.

I don't find this surprising, sadly.

Many of my clients are fulfilling all the non-program tasks, including:

  • Marketing
  • Social Media
  • Outreach
  • Public relations
  • Donor relations
  • Events
  • And oh yes - fundraising!

Usually all of this is lumped into one impossible job description - ending with the dreaded:

"Other duties as assigned."

Now for the good news! There is a better way to structure your development positions and to prevent fundraisers (and other staff) from jumping ship.

In this Nonprofit Nation episode, Chad Barger, CFRE of Productive Fundraising walks us through his simple but effective framework to attract and retain fundraising talent, even in a hybrid and very disrupted work environment.

Chad  is both a self-confessed productivity nerd and a sought-after nonprofit fundraising speaker, trainer and coach specializing in teaching small charities to raise funds more efficiently and effectively.  He is the chief strategist and owner of the firm Productive Fundraising, which specializes in affordable fundraising coaching and training solutions for small, but mighty, nonprofit organizations.

16 Nov 2022Secrets of Compelling Grant Writing That Gets Funded with Rachel Waterman00:36:18

Requesting grant dollars can be quite intimidating, especially when you’re new to the grant seeking process. When it comes to nonprofit grant writing, there’s not a formulaic approach or “one-size-fits-all”. Rather, you need to customize your approach for each funder you pursue.

Rachel Waterman is here to help! Rachel is the CEO and Founder of GDS Grants. She is a GPA approved trainer and presenter on various topics related to grant writing, research & management, but her favorite "things" are data collection/outcome measures and systems for scale and efficiency. She helped develop the grant management software GEMS Grant Easy Management Software.

In this episode, you’ll learn Rachel’s best tips to:

  • Best identify which funders to pursue
  • Determine what to include in your grant proposal - and what you can leave out
  • Persuade funders that you are worthy of a grant
  • Manage grant-writing with the other responsibilities on your plate

23 Nov 2022Strengthening the Capacity of Black Fundraisers with Kia Croom00:34:10

In the report The Lived Experience of Fundraisers of Color produced by Cause Effective, two-thirds of the respondents mentioned facing obstacles in their development careers due to their race.

More than half of those surveyed acknowledged they might be reluctant to recommend that people of color they know enter into the fundraising profession, “because fundraising involves external relationships where bias might be present” and “fundraising reflects and magnifies the racial hierarchies of our culture.”

On this episode of Nonprofit Nation, I sit down with Kia Croom, a fund development executive with 20 years of experience. Kia launched the Black Fundraisers’ podcast to celebrate, inspire and equip Black fund development professionals to excel and positively impact Black communities.

Some of my favorite episodes have featured Johnnetta Cole, the first Black woman president of Spelman College and later Bennett College, social entrepreneur Trabian Shorters, and fundraising executive Dianna Campbell.

30 Nov 2022The Right Way to Tell a Fundraising Story with Vanessa Chase Lockshin00:31:50

Believe it or not, there's a right way to tell a fundraising story. And by fundraising story, I mean a story that you're using to raise money for your non-profit.

A fundraising story needs the right story structure to connect with the audience, demonstrate need, and invite the audience to get involved by making a donation.

Individual donors can give with shocking levels of generosity when they’re deeply moved by stories. That’s just what your organization needs in order to grow!

But chances are, you didn’t get your job because you’re already a storytelling expert. In fact, you may struggle to find stories you think your donors would find interesting.

You might not be at all confident that you can write them well. The good news? You can change all that.

My guest this week is Vanessa Chase Lockshin, a consultant specializing in non-profit storytelling, fundraising and communications, author of The Storytelling Non-Profit: A practical guide to telling stories that raise money and awareness, and the creator of immersive online training programs for non-profit professionals. Vanessa is an award-winning entrepreneur, avid reader, and resident of Victoria, Canada.

29 Nov 2022[SOLO] Last Minute Strategies for Giving Tuesday00:16:56

Today is #GivingTuesday! GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past ten years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity year-round.

In 2021, an estimated $2.7 Billion were donated in twenty-four hours in the U.S. alone, a 9% increase over the prior year and a 37% increase from pre-pandemic levels.

84% of those aware report that GivingTuesday inspired them to be more giving. A 2019 Horizon Media study reported that 52% said that they want to donate on this day because it allows them to be a part of a bigger group of people doing good.

As they write on their website, "GivingTuesday is an opportunity for people around the world to use their individual power of generosity to remain connected and support their communities. It’s not just one day – this is a global social movement that’s working every day to fuel more generosity in service to building a more just and equitable world."

In this episode, I go over several ways to promote your Giving Tuesday campaign and drive more donations.

01 Dec 2022[SOLO] How to Turn Giving Tuesday Donors Into Long-Term Supporters00:12:59

How did Giving Tuesday go for you? I have seen nonprofits spend so much time this year working on their campaigns, creating buzz and excitement, thinking of ways to bring in new donors and get supporters excited before year-end.

But what happens after the donation comes in?

What’s the plan to keep these new donors and bring them into the fold long term, after November 29th?

Let’s talk about donor psychology. We know what donors want.

The National Donor Commitment Study by Donor Voice tell us that donors give again and again to nonprofits where:

  • The organization is perceived to be effective
  • The donor knows what to expect with each interaction
  • The donor receives a timely thank you
  • There are Opportunities to make views known
  • Donor feels like they are part of an important cause
  • Donor feels that their involvement is appreciate

Since immigrating to Canada from Nigeria, Itse Hesse struggled with the lack of safe spaces for Black women to connect with and support each other. In this episode, I talk to Itse about why and how she founded BGC and what she has learned along the way about building a thriving community, online and off.

Donor retention is the rate at which donors maintain their relationship with your organization and continue to donate over time. While the overall number of donors is climbing, repeat donor rates keep falling. What can we do to keep more of the donors we worked so hard to attract?

Madeleine St. John works with clients to develop communication strategy and content that centers the donor experience. Today's donors crave engagement – which means today's nonprofits have a special opportunity to intimately invite donors into their mission as partners and participants.

In this episode, you’ll learn Madeleine’s best tips to:

  • Keep your donors warm between campaigns or events
  • Leverage a welcome series and other automations for stewarding or nurturing new donors and other segments
  • Use your website content, layout, and a frictionless donation process as a critical element of the donor experience

Are you having trouble growing your fundraising program and expanding your donor base?  If your nonprofit's growth has flattened out, it’s most likely a result of a belief - or several - rather than a tactic or a strategy.

I was thrilled to be able to talk to one of the world's most sought-after fundraising expert, Steven Screen, about this common fundraising problem.

Steven is Co-Founder of The Better Fundraising Company and lead author of its must-read industry blog. With over 25 years' fundraising experience, he gets energized by helping organizations understand how they can raise more money. He’s a second-generation fundraiser, a past winner of the Direct Mail Package of the Year, and always driven by the data.

Topics we cover:

  • The beliefs that prevent us from fundraising effectively
  • Why donor fatigue is a myth
  • How to communicate to donors in the best way possible
  • Why getting complaints is actually a GOOD thing - and how to reframe them

My guest today is Raffi DerSimonian. Raffi is a firm believer in the emotive power of visual storytelling, and has developed a range of strategies throughout his career to help organizations and institutions tell their unique story. We have a responsibility to ensure that we recognize and respect the power of the people we exist for.

Vic Hancock Fell co-founded a small international development charity when she was fresh out of university, age 21. She didn't feel it or know it at the time, but looking back 14 years later, she describes this as what she calls “peak White Saviour.”

Most recently, through the context of her work at UK based Raising Futures Kenya, as a White/Western led INGO, she has been more active in advocating for responsibility to acknowledge and minimize White power in this space both as individuals and as organizations.

In this episode, we take a look at the concept of "shift the power" and why it is so important for us as socially purposed organizations, especially those working in global solidarity.

What if you could double your donor retention rate? Even as a small shop nonprofit?

That's exactly what Amy Gibson did, and she's on the podcast to spill her secrets.

Amy is a Muncie native and went to Ball State University. Directly out of college she started working at a telecommunications company that had 13 regional sales offices nationwide.

01 Mar 2023How Gift-Giving Can Make You A Better Fundraiser with Patrick Kucharson00:36:04

Gift-giving makes you a better fundraiser? YUP. And I'll tell you why! We know that giving more than you receive is a satisfying way to live. And Patrick Kucharson helps people on both sides do just that - be better givers AND receivers, through his free email newsletter, Better Gift Coach.

Patrick runs one of my favorite weekly email newsletters Better Gift Coach, a weekly 1-minute shortcut to always having great gift ideas well in advance. Each week, he curates and shares a story of the best gift someone has ever received, and he analyzes the story to provide guidance on how others can replicate it.

I wanted to have Patrick on the podcast because I know that his work can help fundraisers, marketers, mission-driven individuals, and anyone trying to make an impact and affect people.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Patrick's nonprofit background at Jumpstart in Cleveland
  • Storytelling techniques - both in the collecting, crafting, and the telling is a master storyteller - both as a teller and a collector. We can all learn from his simple strategies.
  • Where to find compelling stories that will resonate with your audience
  • The GivingTuesday story he shared that caught my eye
  • What to consider when giving a charitable gift on behalf of another person
  • Creating a great giving and receiving experience

Listen to the end, because Patrick drops some major thoughts on he continues to write his newsletter week after week and how he manages to sustain his creativity.

08 Mar 2023How to Set Your Time Free and Love Your Work with Jenny Blake00:46:26

You’ve been told that time is precious. So why don’t we treat it like the invaluable, nonrenewable resource it is?

I was thrilled to have Jenny Blake on my podcast - not just because I love her books, her podcast, her newsletter - but mostly, her philosophy on time, on work, and on managing it all.

Jenny is an award-winning author and podcaster who loves helping people move from friction to flow through smarter systems. Her latest book, Free Time: Lose the Busywork, Love Your Business, is an operating manual for heart-based business owners and anyone who wants to create better systems in their work and expand their revenue with easy and joy.

Jenny doesn't subscribe to the hustle more, always-on, wake up at 5 AM and meditate/work out/journal culture. She writes:

“Time isn’t money. Time is life force. And yours is precious! I’m obsessed with finding smarter strategies and systems for freeing our mind, time, and team to do more of our best work—and be truly present during our time off.”

The philosophy and the framework she teaches in this book have truly changed the way I manage my time - and the way I even THINK about time as a heart-based business owner.

Listen in to our conversation, and you'll learn not just how to be more "productive" but how to be more intentional in the way you spend your most precious resource - your time!

In this episode, we discuss the common obstacles that keep so many of us stuck, burned out, drained, and spinning our wheels - and Jenny’s thoughtful and intentional solutions.

If you are “beset by the Burdensome B’s” as Jenny calls them - “bored, bottlenecked, burned out, or buried by bureaucracy,” then this episode is for you.

05 Apr 2023The Problem with Nonprofit Storytelling with Maria Bryan00:38:42

Meta Verified and more - what do you need to know about social media in 2023? Join my live training How to Stand Out on Social Media in 2023. Secure your early bird spot before the price goes up!

We know that stories are the lifeblood of a vibrant nonprofit communications strategy. They play a critical role in marketing, fundraising, donor relations, and internal comms. A compelling nonprofit story will inspire lifelong supporters.

However, there is a problem with a lot of nonprofit storytelling.

Traditional marketing teaching tells us to know our audience's pain points, exploit them, and then offer a solution. This can be particularly manipulative in nonprofit marketing since we're working on some of the world's toughest problems. Those we serve are experiencing tremendous pain and often working to overcome insurmountable challenges.

This is where trauma-informed storytelling comes in. On today's episode, my guest Maria Bryan shows us the ways that our sector must tell stories that dignify, respect, and protect the health and well-being of those we serve.

Maria is a nonprofit marketing and messaging strategist who helps nonprofit leaders tell impactful stories that do no harm by speaking about trauma-informed marketing. She has over 15 years in marketing communications in the public sector, a master’s degree in public administration, and a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

In this episode, we discuss the importance of storytelling for nonprofits, how to become a trauma-informed marketer and fundraiser, and how to take care of yourself in this often grueling and exhausting work.

What do nonprofits really need to know about social media in 2023? Get my brand new training, How to Stand Out on Social Media in 2023. Secure your early bird spot before the price goes up!

After my recent discussion with Vic Hancock Fell entitled  Shifting the Power to the People You Exist For I received a thoughtful email from a listener.

She wrote:  “It is so interesting to me that white, iNGO fundraisers are centered in this conversation.  As a black fundraiser and content gatherer for more than 16 years, I believe our viewpoint is not often a part of the conversation.  And, I know that some of us have different perspectives.”

I appreciated that response, and I wanted to give this listener a chance to share a different perspective about fundraising for iNGOs, one not focused on “white guilt” and “white saviorism”.

Vila-Sheree Watson is a multifaceted leader, fundraiser, and content creator, known for her dynamic and soulful approach to creativity and social justice. Born in the South and raised in Oakland, California, Watson's upbringing was deeply influenced by the vibrant arts and culture scene that surrounded her. From a young age, she was drawn to the power of words and storytelling and found solace and inspiration in poetry, art, and music.

In this episode, Vila-Sheree generously shares their perspective on the importance of including diverse viewpoints in the conversation around iNGO fundraising and storytelling.

We discuss the negative impact of focusing too much on "white guilt" and "white saviorism" and the need to move towards authentic storytelling.

Brand Ambassador programs mean more than telling people to post your stuff on social media. Today's topic centers around how to build a brand ambassador program at your nonprofit, how to work effectively with influencers, how to measure success, and how even small nonprofits can build these kinds of relationships.

My guest this week is Nick Lynch. From his own personal experience as a former Make-A-Wish recipient who survived cancer at an early age, Nick is passionate about nonprofit organizations and has spent his professional career building solutions for brands to better identify and target their audiences online.

When the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly forced many nonprofits into the digital space, it triggered Nick to think strategically about solving the challenges of creating opportunities to thrive without in-person events. He created Collidescope.io, an all-in-one social media measurement and data analytics platform to help nonprofits survive throughout the pandemic and beyond.

  • Creating the strategy and leading the team helped New Yorkers get their healthcare questions answered via social media for the NYStateofHealth.NY.gov that resulted in 40K New Yorkers signing up for health insurance during week one – more than any other state exchange.
  • Conducting an organic traffic assessment, training, and internal staff hiring and recruiting for Cancer.gov that lead to nearly 100% traffic growth YOY.

23 Jun 2023BONUS: Are You Ready For The New Google Analytics? with George Weiner00:43:28

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's next-generation measurement solution, and it's replacing Universal Analytics. On July 1, 2023, standard Universal Analytics properties will stop processing data.

GA4 is much more than just a new “version” of Google Analytics. It’s a completely new platform – built from the ground up to collect, process, and report on data differently than before. Migrating to GA4 is a complex and integral process that requires strategic planning and expert implementation.

George Weiner is here to help!

George is the Founder and CEO of Whole Whale, a digital agency that leverages data and tech to increase the impact of nonprofits and for-benefit companies. In nearly a decade of operations, Whole Whale has worked with over 100 nonprofit and social-impact organizations, spent over $6 million in Google Ad Grants dollars, and supported an additional 150,000+ organizations through free online content and trainings.

He is also the co-founder of Power Poetry, the largest teen poetry platform in the U.S, a safe, creative, free home to over 500k poets.

Every interaction with donors should be meaningful and intentional, but without proactive planning it's easy for things to slip through the cracks.

In this episode, I’m joined by nik castle, Demand Generation Manager at Instil, a modern, purpose-built platform that helps nonprofits cultivate deeper, more holistic relationships with their community.

We review Instil’s framework for donor cultivation-Connect, Interact, Nurture. The idea is simple: with an intentional and proactive approach, every single interaction with a supporter can set you up for the next one.

nik details concrete steps for implementing marketing and fundraising best practices for creating long-term donor loyalty and “one to many empathy”.

With professional roots in data analytics, nik castle leverages seven years of experience as the technical arm of the marketing teams they have worked on to support a revolution in data management for nonprofit development teams. In her current role at Instil, nik is dedicated to helping scale authentic relationship building with supporters through one-to-many empathy that’s facilitated—not limited—by data and technology. Outside of work, nik is deeply invested in studying and practicing both individual and organizational psychology, as well as serving their art collective as a community organizer and tending to her garden and three pets, Angelina, Jinx, and Tessie.

People who care about digital content that resonates on a human level are needed now more than ever. It's time to rethink how we approach digital content so that we can make the communications and interactions we all encounter every day less robotic, chaotic, and caustic—both to receive and to create.

My guest this week is on a mission to create more human-centered digital content. Bailey Lewis is a content strategist who runs the Words First Course & Community. She created Words First to transform the way that professionals and their organizations communicate with other humans online (only the least human and most prevalent medium of all!).

We discuss:

  • What makes so many digital experiences chaotic and unusable—for both the audiences trying to engage with them and the teams building them
  • How to flip the content creation process to “words first”
  • How to identify and shift where processes are keeping that from happening
  • How to apply user experience content strategy principles for digital communications that resonate on a human level.

Nonprofit organizations need their professionals to perform at peak levels, inspire others, maintain relationships with community members, and achieve "reach goals."

Grueling hours, unrealistic expectations, and lack of operational supports lead to high burnout and churn among those working in the nonprofit world.

The good news is that there is a lot that nonprofit leaders can do to better support their employees. And, there's plenty that nonprofit professionals, themselves, can do to maintain their own well-being, resilience, and happiness on the job.

Lauren Brownstein helps nonprofit organizations, philanthropists, and grant makers achieve their goals through PITCH, LLC, her fundraising and philanthropy consulting practice. She is the author of Be Well, Do Good: Self-Care and Renewal for Nonprofit Professionals and Other Do-Gooders, a Barnes & Noble Bestseller. Lauren has raised millions of dollars for workforce development programs, museums, student support organizations, women’s causes, community centers, international groups, associations, and more. How can nonprofits get started on Threads?

Since I recorded Part 1, new data indicates the app has already achieved one-fifth of the weekly active user base of Twitter worldwide and 86 times the weekly active user base of the largest Twitter rival in the U.S, Truth Social, which had a weekly active user base of 1 million as of last week.

The app has now achieved over 150 million downloads according to app intelligence firm data.ai.

What this means for nonprofits is hard to say, but it’s definitely worth exploring the new app as part of your overall content strategy - something I am teaching in my new live training on July 31st.

So how do you get started? That's what I cover in this special bonus episode.

02 Aug 2023Reaching Your Audience Online Is About To Get Even Harder with Elyse Wallnutt00:32:58

Marketing has never been more challenging than it is now: As technology has matured, so have the layers between you and your audience become murkier. Your outreach is likely dependent on third parties in ways you may not realize.

Economic forecasts and audience demand for privacy seem daunting. And though innovation is desperately needed, it never feels like the right time to ask for more investment dollars.

Data privacy has become such a concern for consumers that they’re demanding more control. Because of this, tech giants and regulatory bodies are making huge shifts in audience targeting capabilities – you’re likely already seeing the impact.

In this episode, data privacy expert Elyse Wallnutt will share how your consumer demand for privacy is impacting nonprofit acquisition and how to pivot your digital strategy to focus on data autonomy and audience trust.

About Elysse

Elyse Wallnutt is a senior marketing and tech leader with 16+ years of experience driving results at the intersection of revenue, advocacy, brand, and policy objectives.

She delivered $39M+ in net new revenue for organizations over the past five years. She built the digital activation campaign for the clean future plan that powered the majority of President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. And she has grown acquisition programs to more than 9x their former size.

She launched Agility Lab Consulting in 2022 to support business leaders in reaching their audiences through smart strategies that stay ahead of shifts in technology, algorithms, consumer interest, and rising demand for privacy.

16 Aug 2023The Problem With "Doing More With Less" - Building Sustainable Fundraising Programs with Wendy Mercurio00:36:16

This episode is sponsored by Qgiv, a comprehensive fundraising platform trusted by over 20,000 fundraisers. The Qgiv team understands that fundraising isn’t always an easy job. To help, they recently surveyed fundraising professionals and donors to create a soon to be released report, The Sustainable Giving Report. You might have heard the phrase, “Do more with less,” once or twice before, and if you work in the nonprofit sector, you’ve likely heard that phrase dozens of times. It’s a fundraising professional’s mantra!

When you’re in “survival mode” it can be hard to make time to fine-tune your fundraising campaigns and raise more money—not just for your mission, but for the administrative costs associated with your organization.

This pressure (that often feels like a rice cooker ready to burst) can impact your job satisfaction and lead to high turnover rates within your organization, affecting your overall wellbeing as a change maker and your nonprofit’s bottom line.

In this episode, we discuss the hard topics:

  • Are donors still willing to financially support their favorite causes despite inflation?
  • What can be done to address the increased pressures fundraising professionals are facing?
  • Are fundraisers  being given the tools they need to meet their goals?
  • How can nonprofits retain their fundraising staff and build more scalable programs?

09 Aug 2023How to Get More Email Engagement (Based On Data) with Abby Jarvis00:36:54

Having an effective email program is an important part of building an engaged community.  48% of donors prefer to receive updates and appeals via email.

But accurate data about nonprofit email performance has historically been hard to come by—especially for small to midsize nonprofits—and that makes it hard to gauge your own campaigns’ performance.

That all changes with a new sector report, The Nonprofit Email Report: Data-Backed Insights for Better Engagement.

My guest on this episode is Abby Jarvis, Senior Content Marketing Manager for Neon One. To get the extensive data for this report, they evaluated 37,472 email campaigns sent by their clients and identified key email benchmarks broken down by organization size. They include data for small and large nonprofits as well as the average of all emails sent. In the report, you will find data on average list sizes, open rates, and click-through rates for all three of our size cohorts, along with data-backed insights your team can actually use.

In this episode, Abby and I discuss:

  • Tips for improving your email campaigns’ performance
  • Words and phrases that boost engagement
  • An analysis of the most engaging email of 2022
  • Practical strategies for creating compelling emails
  • Expert advice from industry thought leaders
  • Nonprofit-specific email performance benchmarks
