Welcome to Nomadic Diaries, the podcast about life on the move. In this episode, titled "Lisa Liang," we delve into the experiences of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and the importance of storytelling as a means of healing and self-expression.

Our guest, Lisa Liang, is an actress, writer, producer, and speaker who grew up in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Morocco, Egypt, and Connecticut. She shares her personal journey as a mixed-race TCK and her insights on the challenges faced by TCKs.

The episode opens with host Doreen Cumberford and her partner Sharon Fields giving an introduction to the podcast and its mission of encouraging travel, global mobility, and living in more meaningful ways. They highlight their work as a "journey of recovery" and discuss the importance of addressing cultural and other sources of trauma.

The episode also addresses the "expat lifestyle" and its associated challenges, with the hosts discussing their personal experiences and recovery journey from the effects of being TCKs themselves.

The stand out line from this episode is ""Telling your story is a psychic saver because it is very cathartic to express your story, to tell your story, to go back, explore, discover and share stories from your life that you may not have ever shared before.  People's eyes glaze over as soon as you say where you grew up or where you've been living, and they can't relate...It is a true psyche saver to decide 'No, I'm going to tell my story in some creative form'...Not only is it cathartic for you...once you share it, it can be very cathartic and even therapeutic for your audience or readers."

They highlight the need for self-permission to speak about difficult experiences and the role of storytelling in cultivating gratitude and self-awareness.

The episode concludes with a powerful reminder that sharing personal experiences is not selfish but can have a profound impact on others. Join us in this thought-provoking conversation as we explore the power of storytelling and the experiences of Third Culture Kids in creating connections and understanding.

21 Nov 2023Belonging Beyond Borders with Megan Norton00:27:52

We are thrilled to bring you a brand new episode of Nomadic Diaries featuring  Megan Norton.

Megan, an author and daughter of a diplomat, shares her insights on cultivating a sense of belonging for adult Third Culture Kids (TCKs) in her latest book, "Belonging Beyond Borders: How Adult Third Culture Kids Can Cultivate a Sense of Belonging."

During the podcast episode, Megan discusses how her book goes beyond the TCK community, exploring the universal human need for belonging. Using analogies from the garden, Megan delves into the patterns and opportunities for belonging, emphasizing the time, effort, and rooting necessary to thrive in new environments.

Megan draws from her own highly mobile childhood, having grown up in six different countries. She shares some memorable gardening experiences, such as the beautiful gardens in Vienna, Austria, which hold a special place in her heart.

Megan also discusses the significance of rooting in both the garden and human life, highlighting the attachment to people and places that contribute to a sense of belonging.

During the episode, we delved into the themes of her latest book, "Belonging Beyond Borders: How Adult Third Culture Kids Can Cultivate a Sense of Belonging."

Here are three key takeaways from our conversation that I believe you'll find valuable:

1️⃣ Belonging is a universal human need: While the book focuses on TCKs, the concept of belonging extends beyond this specific demographic. Whether you're a TCK or not, understanding how to cultivate a sense of belonging is relevant to all of us.

2️⃣ The garden analogy: In my book, I use analogies from the garden to explore patterns in belonging and opportunities for belonging. The garden metaphor is endless and helps us understand the time, effort, and rooting necessary to truly thrive in our sense of belonging.

3️⃣ Rooting and attachment: Just like plants in a garden, we need to root ourselves to places and people in order to feel a sense of belonging. Rooting allows us to attach and thrive. However, uprooting can be traumatic, so it's crucial to minimize the associated trauma and invest in the skills required for successful transitions.

05 Dec 2023Moving Furniture & Assembling Identity - Rachel Cason00:37:51

Here are three key takeaways from the conversation with our exceptional guest, Rachel Cason author of

💫 Importance of Identity: Identity construction is often compared to solving a jigsaw puzzle or piecing together spiky shards of a stained glass window. It's particularly challenging for third culture kids. We need to acknowledge the value of understanding our melting pot identities as we navigate through life.

🏡 Safe Spaces and Creativity: Therapeutic success for TCKs often lies in providing a safe and secure environment that encourages creativity and risk-taking. Through this, people can explore their ever-evolving identity and personality.

📚 Story Curation: How we curate and narrate our life stories has a massive influence on our personal development. This holds a spot of significance among TCKs. Our chosen 'artifacts' — clothes, jewelry, books, photos — can help us express, honor and validate our pluralistic stories, especially in the absence of a fixed domicile.

The episode will leave you reflecting on your personal journey, examining your sense of identity and, potentially, unwrap the adult TCK within.

17 Nov 2023Sporadic Diaries: Exploring Cultural Whiplash! NaPodPoMo00:13:09

🌍✨ Exciting Cultural Exploration in the Latest Episode of Nomadic Diaries! ✨🌍

I had the pleasure of discussing a fascinating experience in the latest episode of Nomadic Diaries. The topic of cultural whiplash truly opened my eyes to the diverse traditions and celebrations around the world.

Here are the key takeaways from the episode:

1️⃣ Embracing Different Traditions: The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico have evolved into a grand event, with families visiting cemeteries to honor their ancestors. This tradition is a beautiful way to remember and cherish loved ones. It reminded me of the importance of appreciating and participating in various cultural customs.

2️⃣ Unexpected Connections: During my time at the cemetery, I met two gentlemen who welcomed me into their intimate moment of remembrance. Despite the language barrier, we connected through shared emotions and stories. These unexpected connections are a testament to the power of human connection and the beauty of cultural exchange.

3️⃣ Seasonal Whiplash: The transition from the colorful Day of the Dead celebrations to the sight of Christmas décor in the grocery store was a jarring, yet thought-provoking moment. It made me reflect on the uniqueness of different seasonal celebrations and how they are preserved and cherished across cultures.

18 Nov 2023Sporadic Diaries - The Journey to Belonging: NaPodPoMo00:11:35

📚 Here are my key takeaways from Megan's book and our conversation:

1️⃣ Belonging takes effort: Just like most things in life, belonging isn't just handed to you. It requires actively investing in relationships, forming friendships, and being present both mentally and physically. Building authentic connections means engaging in active listening, asking questions, and showing genuine interest in others.

2️⃣ Cherish your support network: In a life filled with constant movement, having a few friends who provide a space of unconditional vulnerability is invaluable. Surround yourself with people who allow you to be your true self without judgment, who support you in your broken places, and help hold your broken heart. These authentic connections are built through mutual sharing and require both giving and receiving.

3️⃣ Embrace the present: It's easy to get caught up in nostalgia for the past or daydreaming about future destinations. However, true belonging takes time and intentionality. Don't wait for the "perfect" time or place to feel a sense of belonging. Instead, reflect on how you can be present in your current community and make the most of the connections and opportunities around you.

🌟 Remember, belonging is an ongoing journey, and it's different for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned expatriate, a digital nomad, or simply navigating new environments, I hope these insights resonate with you. 20 Nov 2023Sporadic Diaries - Unveiling the Gardener Within - NaPodPoMo00:09:15

🎙️ Exciting news! Hi I just recorded an excerpt for Nomadic Diaries  by author Megan Norton, and I read from her book "Belonging Beyond Borders." Stay tuned for the release of her episode.

🌱 In her book, Megan uses the beautiful metaphor of gardening to explore the themes of belonging and impermanence. Here are 3 key takeaways from the reading:

1️⃣ Belonging is an active, participatory event: No matter where we are in the world, finding our tribe and cultivating a sense of belonging requires effort and action. Just like tending to a garden, we must take care of our relationships and roots.

2️⃣ Embrace impermanence and change: Like gardens, our sense of belonging may shift and evolve over time. We may experience seasons of transition and uprooting, but it's in these moments that we have the opportunity to grow and flourish.

3️⃣ Celebrate wild diversity: As nomads, travelers, or expats, we encounter different cultures, values, and worldviews. Just like flowers that surprise gardeners, we too can embrace the unique and diverse aspects that make us who we are.

🌍 So if you're embarking on a new adventure or relocating, remember the power of belonging. Foster connections, seek out new experiences, and cherish the lessons learned along the way.

Stay connected with Nomadic Diaries for more inspiring stories and lessons worth telling. Don't forget to listen, share, and subscribe. Happy journeying! 🌺✨

21 Nov 2023Sporadic Diaries: The Power of Boundaries - NaPodPoMo00:09:42

🌍 I recently had the pleasure of reading  from an insightful book called "Belonging Beyond Borders" written by Megan Norton, which inspired me to share some important takeaways. In this book, Megan explores the topic of setting healthy boundaries, specifically for digital and global nomads, as well as those who love to travel. 📚

Here are 3 key takeaways from "Belonging Beyond Borders":

1️⃣ Boundaries bring structure, stability, and safety:
Research has shown that setting boundaries provides a sense of security, which leads to greater creativity and freedom. Boundaries are an essential form of self-care, self-compassion, and self-respect, helping you define what you need to feel open and safe.

2️⃣ Learn to recognize and manage social threats:
Megan highlights the importance of assessing social threats to your physical and psychological safety. By understanding whether you feel safe being yourself, maintaining autonomy, experiencing predictability and fairness, and being valued for your contributions, you can establish healthier boundaries in your relationships.

3️⃣ Reflect and set boundaries in all aspects of your life:
Belonging and setting boundaries go hand in hand. Megan prompts us to consider our relational, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual boundaries. This reflection includes evaluating the relationships that empower or deplete us, determining our physical and mental well-being needs, and nurturing our spiritual selves.

🌟 Setting healthy boundaries is an ongoing practice that requires rest, recovery, and resilience. 🌟

I highly recommend reading "Belonging Beyond Borders" by Megan Norton to gain valuable insights into boundary-setting, whether you're a nomad, a traveler, or simply seeking to establish healthier boundaries in your life. Remember, each of us has a unique recipe for finding belonging and creating boundaries that function for us.

If you'd like to dive deeper into this topic, don't forget to check out the latest episode of Nomadic Diaries, where Megan Norton shares her wisdom and experiences, and Belonging Beyond Borders is available on Amazon.

27 Nov 2023Sporadic Diaries: Falconry - A Reading from Life in the Camel Lane - NaPodPoMo00:18:34

🌍 Sharing a glimpse into the magical world of falconry in Arabia! 🏜️✨

I had the pleasure of experiencing the fascinating tradition of falconry during my time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In a small excerpt from my book, "Life in the Camel Lane," I recount the awe-inspiring moments I spent watching the Saudi falconers with their majestic birds of prey. Here are three key takeaways from my encounter:

1️⃣ A Blend of Tradition and Technology: Falconry in Saudi Arabia beautifully combines ancient traditions with modern technology. The falconers I met had the most up-to-date Land Cruisers equipped with telemetry systems to track their prized birds. An intriguing mix of old and new!

2️⃣ A Deeply Personal Pursuit: Falconry is not just a sport, but a way of life for many Saudis. It offers a respite from busy work-life, allowing falconers to reconnect with nature and the birds they adore. It's a bond that requires patience, flexibility, and a profound understanding of the relationship between man and bird.

3️⃣ Bridging Cultures and Forming Connections: Falconry serves as a bridge between cultures, transcending language barriers. During my time with the falconers, I witnessed how a shared passion for falconry brought people together from different backgrounds. It showcased the willingness of the Saudi falconers to share their traditions and make others feel welcome.

27 Feb 2024Navigating Culture and Connections Across Borders with Roy Craft00:33:09

In a recent interview Doreen and Sharon spoke with Roy Craft a former executive and cross-cultural expert who has worked across borders, races, cultures and languages.

As someone who's crossed borders to live and work in various countries, our mantra has always been about fostering global-mindedness. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation with Roy Craft that resonated with that mantra.

🌏 The Power of Appreciative Inquiry
In any interaction, focusing on the positive aspects of organizations and individuals can unearth a wealth of understanding and shared humanity. This methodology has been instrumental in my approach, whether interacting with individuals or within my professional environment.

🌏 Embracing Omniculture
Living as the only white staff member at Morehouse College was a pivotal experience in Roy's life. It deeply ingrained the value of reaching out, understanding, and integrating diverse cultural perspectives – something he aims to embody through his concept of becoming "omnicultured".

🌏 Day-to-Day Connections
Intentional conversations is a powerful way to connect in any arena. It's about taking the time to build rapport and truly understand where people are coming from. Roy can practice this frequently due to his domicile being in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

🌏 Seeing with New Eyes
A crucial bit of advice for those of us considering a new life abroad is to embrace newness with a fresh perspective and a healthy dose of curiosity. This extends beyond analysis, into feeling and experiencing your new surroundings, perhaps even through the lens of poetry or art.

🌏 Creating Third Cultural Spaces:
Working interculturally within organizations isn't just about compromise but about creating spaces where shared values and explorations can flourish. It's about 90% of culture that isn't visible at first glance but is paramount in building strong, lasting bridges between diverse groups.

As someone who has navigated cultural nuances, from the meticulous taxi systems in Japan to intercultural communication styles in business settings, Roy believes that being a cultural learner is vital. It's about setting aside preconceptions and engaging with a heart-to-heart approach.

We hope that by sharing Roy's experiences this might inspire you to navigate cross-cultural interactions with empathy and intelligence.  Let's continue to foster a global-hearted community together.

12 Mar 2024A Look at Cultural Intelligence - Polly Collingridge00:38:23

Welcome to another episode of Nomadic Diaries where we traverse the boundaries of culture and geography to understand the essence of a nomadic lifestyle. Hosted by Doreen Cumberford,  we are joined by our distinguished guest Polly Collingridge, a cross-cultural psychology expert and a professional at the Cultural Intelligence Center in the UK.

Cultural Intelligence: A Deep Dive

Polly Collingridge shares insights from over 150 peer-reviewed papers that back the cultural intelligence (CQ) scale as a trustworthy assessment tool. The CQ framework comprises four main capabilities: drive, knowledge, strategy, and action, crucial for working effectively across various cultural landscapes.

- A 15-minute main assessment can provide a snapshot of one's cultural intelligence and preferences across ten cultural values.

Personal and Professional Perspectives

Polly brings her personal experiences living in different countries into the conversation, highlighting how these have shaped her interest in the intercultural field from childhood.

In her work at the Cultural Intelligence Center, she focuses on training global teams, enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and boosting staff engagement through the lens of cultural intelligence.

The Intersection of Digital and Cultural Divide
Doreen and Polly touch upon the shifting digital behaviors and how the generational digital divide resembles being in a different cultural territory.

Strategies and Adaptability

Both Doreen and Polly stress the importance of understanding one's own cultural perspective and the need to be open-minded for effective intercultural interaction.

Polly recommends keeping things simple and striving to make connections, adapting to different emotional expressions and communication styles across cultures.

The concept of emotional intelligence is woven into the conversation as a complement to cultural intelligence, particularly pertinent in our increasingly digital and divided world.

Navigating Multicultural Challenges

Doreen and Polly share their personal challenges and stories about living abroad, especially focusing on experiences in the US, and the indispensable role cultural intelligence plays in such journeys.

Polly underlines the significance of self-assessment in identifying areas of improvement in cultural intelligence, with specific references to strategies that aid development in this area.

Resources and Further Engagement

For listeners looking to delve further into the topic or engage with Polly, she can be found on LinkedIn and contacted via email Polly Collingridge at Culturalco.uk Additional resources can be accessed through [Culturalq.co.uk](http://culturalq.co.uk) and.com, where you can find a blog and a recorded interview dedicated to global mobility and intercultural training.

Rhoda shares her firsthand experiences tackling the challenges of maintaining stability and coherence in family life while being separated from her husband by vast distances because of work commitments.

Here are three of the top strategies for managing such situations:

Self-Inclusion in Decision-Making:

06 Aug 2024From Stranger to Neighbour: Building Your Tribe Abroad - Kelly Rayes-Haitt00:48:51

In this episode, host Doreen Cumberford interviewed Kelly Hayes-Raitt who is currently residing in Lisbon, Portugal. They discussed Kelly's journey from political consultant and activist to international house and petsitter and freelance writer.

Key takaways:

Life transitions, such as retirement or the loss of a loved one, can be catalysts for pursuing a nomadic lifestyle. It's essential to consider life stages and generational experiences when making the decision to launch oneself overseas as either an expat or a nomad.

Building, maintaining and sustaining a tribe when you arrive and commit to living in a new place is critical. Friendships are crucial for nomads to combat loneliness and create a sense of community. Prioritizing the nurturing of friendships should be a key consideration when relocating.

Invisible baggage or considerations,  such as financial, relationship, health, purpose, and career plays a significant role in the relocation process. It's important to manage these aspects gradually and give each the attention it deserves.

Engaging with local communities, whether through online platforms like Facebook and Meetup or by attending local activities, can help nomads build a support network and gain cultural insights in their new location.

"I believe traveling is the best way to learn about yourself -- and about your partner. Whether it's long weekends away domestically or extended trips overseas, travel opens your eyes and your heart."  Kelly Rayes-Haitt

08 Oct 2024A Nomad's Compass: Navigating Life, Resilience, and Adventure00:39:24

Meet Chris Cerra, the genius and founder of Remote Base  and Digital Nomad Trip Reports!

I was introduced to Chris by a friend, who operates one of the most functional and powerful expat/nomad insurance companies and we discovered a common love for the far-ranging subjects of nomadism.

Chris shared his wide-ranging but very sensible and down to earth approach to nomading, here are a few takeaways.

Understanding Your 'Why'
Knowing your motivation for embracing a nomadic lifestyle will help fuel resilience and guide your decisions step-by-step. This deep understanding of your purpose can serve as an anchor during challenging times and help you stay committed to your chosen path.

Making Decisions Wisely
Navigating choices like accommodations and destinations with a clear purpose and reliable resources means lots of thorough research, budget considerations, and aligning your choices with your overall nomadic goals. Developing a decision-making framework that considers factors like safety, work requirements, and personal growth opportunities will greatly assist your nomadic experience.

Cultivating Resilience
Develop resilience as you adapt to different environments and challenges, a key skill for nomads. This resilience extends beyond just dealing with travel hiccups; it's about maintaining a positive outlook, problem-solving on the go, and viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth.

Prioritizing Health
Chris advocates that we all travel with portable workout equipment in to maintain our health on-the-go. Don't forget about dietary habits and health insurance for emergencies. Health prioritization also includes mental well-being, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and finding ways to de-stress in unfamiliar environments. Make sure to look into telemedicine options for continuity of care and research local healthcare systems all your destinations.

Engaging Locally
Participating in local sports can help us stay active and foster connections, thus enhancing your travel enjoyment. This engagement can extend to joining local clubs, attending community events, or volunteering. These connections  also help combat loneliness and create a sense of temporary belonging in each location.

Adapting with Technology
Use modern tools for easier navigation but balance with learning resilience and problem-solving skills. While apps and online resources are invaluable, don't become overly reliant on them. Develop skills like map reading, basic language communication without translation apps, and the ability to ask for help from locals. This combination ensures you can thrive even when technology isn't available.

Mental Preparedness Practice mental techniques and "fear setting" to navigate the uncertainties of nomadic living confidently. This includes visualization exercises, mindfulness practices, and scenario planning. By anticipating potential challenges and mentally preparing for them, you can reduce anxiety and approach new situations with greater calm and confidence.

Building Intuition
Sharpen your travel intuition over time, helping you make comfortable and safe decisions in new settings. This intuition develops through experience and keen observation.

All of the above is incredibly sound, pragmatic advice from a well-informed and well-established nomad! Thanks for the conversation Chris and

15 Oct 2024Nomadic With Horses - Check-In Take Two!00:39:41

Koen is one of our regulars on Nomadic Diaries and lives the life of a traveling nomad accompanying high performance horses as they travel around the world to attend equestrian events. It was really fun to reconnect, especially after Koen had visited Saudi Arabia, and I was eager to hear what he had been learning from his travels over the last six to nine months. I really enjoyed reconnecting with Koen Gomes again.

The conversation covered the following:

Embracing Ambiguous Identity:
We discussed the skill called adaptability and how cultivating it creates a multi- faceted sense of self across diverse travel experiences. Koen spelled out how adaptability aids in navigating various and dramatically different environments while building cross-cultural connections.

Mindful Travel Practices
Koen shared his top strategies that help him stay grounded during those solitary moments abroad. Regular reflection and an appreciation of local beauty enhances our well-being and enriches our travel experiences.

Open-Minded Cultural Exploration: Approach controversial destinations without preconceptions. Direct experiences often provide valuable insights, challenging assumptions and fostering personal growth.

Balancing Health and Travel
Koen explained how he prioritizes physical and mental wellness when flying several times per month while juggling time zones. Establishing a consistent fitness routine, whether in hotels or during flights, helps maintain our health amid frequent travel.

Building Global Connections
Koen believes that his networking skills are one of the biggest contributors to his success in maintaining good mental health and well-being, which he has to juggle as he manages extremely nomadic conditions. Creating a sense of belonging across diverse locations by building friendships, connections and relationships gives him something to look forward to in different locations.

Nomadic Diaries says "Thank you Koen, once again for sharing your journey, wisdom, and unique perspective with our audience. It was a pleasure to have you on the show, and I look forward to many more insightful conversations in the future."
