09 Jan 2025 | Ep. 38 - Selfloss | 01:30:27
Selfloss, developed by Goodwin Games, is an emotional action adventure game where we play as Kazimir, an old man who has found himself caught in between life and the beyond. As he moves through the purgatory he finds himself in, you must help him clear an infectious miasma that threatens this world. You also encounter a cast of friendly (or at least non-threatening) characters who are in need of Kazimir's healing abilities. Kazimir has been tasked with performing the ritual of Selfloss for anyone who needs it: helping these characters pay respect to their lost loved ones, and helping them to move on into the beyond. This is a beautiful and somber exploration of how we process grief. In episode 38 of No Small Games, Kate and Emily discuss their experience playing the melancholy adventure game, Selfloss. First and foremost, you'll learn what whale they would both be if they were whales (it's relevant, we swear). The two also discuss their impression of the mechanics of Kazimir's all-in-one magical staff, and the combat in the game. You'll also hear their thoughts on the striking art and music that creates this world that Kazimir moves through. We hope you enjoy! 04 Jan 2024 | Ep. 18 - Stray Gods | 01:40:05
Imagine a week where being accused of murder isn't the wildest thing that happened to you... because you just discovered every Greek god you had ever heard of is real. That's exactly the week that main character Grace is experiencing in the game Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, developed by Summerfall Studios. After a chance (or maybe fated) encounter with the muse Calliope, Grace finds herself abruptly dropped in the middle of centuries-old drama and tensions among the Greek pantheon of gods and idols. 01 Jun 2023 | Ep. 5 - Terra Nil | 01:06:11
Turn the concept of a city builder on its head and revitalize regions stripped of their natural ecosystems...
Terra Nil is an environmental strategy game that puts you in charge of an expedition to transform barren, desolate lands and bring them back to life. The game takes the classic UI and gameplay of a city builder and applies them to a natural landscape in desperate need of a little TLC. Terra Nil flips the concept of "progress" on its head. Instead of winning through the process on industrialization and natural resource consumption, you win by enriching and purifying soil and water, improving climatological conditions, and returning native species to their habitats.
In the fifth episode of No Small Games, Kate and Emily review their experiences playing Terra Nil, developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital. Kate describes the deep emotions that get conjured up for her at the site of wind turbines. Emily shares which endgame spoiler she just couldn't wrap her head around. Find out which aspects of the game were most challenging for the hosts, and which were most fun, in this indie game review of Terra Nil. Episode Timecodes

Grimoire Groves is a cute and cozy action roguelike where you play as a young witch embarking on a quest to learn new spells, get to know the forest spirits, and ultimately restore the Grimoire Groves back to a lush, natural state. Inspired by games like Animal Crossing and Cult of the Lamb, the core gameplay is action-packed and very true to the roguelike genre, while removing the element of violence from the combat. Rather than fighting, your character uses witchy spells to grow the plants they encounter in the forest. This game is currently in development by Stardust Studios. His only lifeline is his boss Delilah, who he can communicate with exclusively via walkie-talkie. While he searches for himself, Henry and Delilah uncover much more than they ever expected, hidden in Shoshone National Forest. In Episode 24 of No Small Games, special guest Jules (known online as ShinobiJules) joins Kate and Emily to review the game Firewatch. You'll hear their takes on (and gripes with) the two main characters, their thoughts on game mechanics, and experiences navigating the (in-game) wilderness. Experience postal service Zen while you contemplate the life paths less traveled in this serene lakeside town... In Lake, a narrative postal sim game developed and published by Whitethorn Games, you play as Meredith Weiss: a 39 year-old working in the tech industry in 1986, who has journeyed from the big city back to her hometown of Providence Oaks. Meredith is taking time off work so that her parents can go on a much needed vacation, while she covers the work at her father's job: the United States Postal Service. 12 Dec 2024 | Ep. 36 - UFO 50 | 01:49:47
UFO 50, developed by Mossmouth, is not just a single game. This is a retro-inspired pack of 50 games, that represent the full library of titles published by the fictitious game company UFO Soft. These games' fictitious release dates span from the years 1982-1989 and were playable on three made up consoles. As you can tell, the lore goes deep in this game. The developers were meticulous in how they designed the game from each date, making sure to constrain the game's technical requirements to reflect the technology of that era. However, developers Derek Yu and Jon Perry were also thoughtful in the genres that they represented, including borrowing from some more modern genres for their games' mechanics and systems. In episode 36 of No Small Games, Kate and Emily discuss their experience playing the retro-inspired UFO 50. This episode takes on a slightly different format, since talking in depth about 50 whole games would require a whole season on its own. The hosts go back and forth sharing some of their favorite titles from the pack (along with some of the games that didn't land for them). They also discuss a bit of the lore within the game, and their own histories of playing video games "back in the day."
