20 Jan 2022 | The Owsley Stanley Foundation -Discovering Bear's Sonic Journals | 02:12:22
We're honored this week to have Starfinder Stanley and Hawk from Owsley Stanley Foundation as our guests this week. While perhaps most widely known as the “Acid King” for his early role manufacturing the highest quality LSD to help fuel the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s, Owsley was a self-educated innovator, scientist, artist, and patron of the arts with wide-ranging interests. As such, he had a profound and well-documented influence on other artists, musicians, and sound engineers, among others. Owsley essentially recorded every artist that ever played through a sound system that he built.
His catalog is prolific – both in the quantity of recordings and the stature of the artists. These historic recordings comprise what he called “Bear’s Sonic Journals.”
The Owsley Stanley Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of “Bear’s Sonic Journals,” Owsley’s archive of more than 1,300 live concert soundboard recordings from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including recordings by Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, and more than 80 other artists across nearly every musical idiom. These analog reel-to-reel recordings are nearing the end of their expected shelf lives and will deteriorate and be lost forever if they are not preserved.
We catch up with Starfinder and Hawk to talk about the latest release of Bear's Sonic Journals, "Johnny Cash At The Carousel Ballroom April 24th, 1968". This iconic sonic treasure has a story all its own and the guys from the OSF take us through how this journal came to find itself being released, they share some super interesting descriptions of how Bear did his thing, share with us some of what goes into creating the entire package for a 'Sonic Journal', give their thoughts on why they believe Johnny Cash is an icon of American Music, and much, much, more!
Make sure to head over to: www.owsleystanleyfoundation.org to sponsor a future reel, get yourself the sonic journals, and find out all that's going with the Owsley Stanley Foundation!

22 Jan 2019 | Episode 80 - Our Coffee Gets Heavy: A Morning On The Porch | 01:20:03
This one wasn’t planned. Sometimes in life the most beautiful things come out of events that we had absolutely no idea were going to occur. Stuff get’s real this morning as Alex and Aaron sit down for some early morning coffee and smoke and quickly realize they needed to be recording what they were discussing. Not long after Ryder joins the mix and drops some heavy stuff on them. This is a live therapy session with the No Simple Road Crew, unedited, raw, unfiltered, and real. We hope you dig it.

We are back at it with The Rewind this week after being away last week because we were sick! We jump into a pretty heavy conversation surrounding the obstacles each of us faces in being wholly, totally, and completely ourselves. What are the triggers and things we have hiding in the dark corners of our minds that hang us up and stop us from shining our own unique light 100% for all the world to see? What can we do to try and move past that old programming?

This week on the No Simple Road Weekly Rewind our Conductor bares his soul about some recent struggles he's been facing and not talking about up until now. Sometimes we face things that seem to pile up, one after the other, and don't give us time to integrate. The most important thing to remember is that simply talking these things through and getting them out of our heads and into the air is the beginning of the healing journey.
This is a Family conversation and you're all welcome to a seat at our table.

24 Feb 2019 | Ep 85 - Saving The World With Andy Frasco | 02:07:31
Andy Frasco of Andy Frasco & The U.N. and Andy Fraso’s World Saving Podcast joins the No Simple Road Crew on The Porch for a morning filled with laughs, unexpected therapy, and creating connection. We talk candidly about addiction & getting it together, making choices based on what we think we’re supposed to do rather than what we want, Andy’s new album ‘Change Of Pace’, and why we are only just now finding out we should have been friends a long time ago.
Andy Frasco & the U.N.’s performances have been described as a "boisterous blend of harmonic funk and jazzy influences, all topped with boundless energy". Frasco frequently calls additional guest musicians to join his band on stage during sets, as well as fans. Shows are highly improvisational featuring impromptu “battles” between band members, who graciously hop off stage into the crowd to contest their instrumental fortitude against one another in a sporting display of individual musicianship. Frasco's shows are also highly interactive, often stopping the show to speak directly to audience members, as well as invite people in the audience up on stage.

05 Apr 2024 | Cesar Marin of Cultivating Wisdom.net -Embracing Transformation at Any Age | 01:41:00
Join us on No Simple Road this week as we embark on a profound journey through the realms of psychedelics and personal transformation. Our guest, Cesar Marin of Cultivating Wisdom.net, shares his remarkable story of discovering the power of plant medicine at 54. His late-in-life psychedelic awakening sheds light on the often untold narratives of those who find these experiences in their golden years. Together, we discuss the societal shifts around psychedelics, the therapeutic potential for personal rebirth, and how embracing these experiences can lead to dramatic shifts in life perspectives, particularly for those well into adulthood.
We chat candidly regarding the symbiotic relationship between art, music, and psychedelics. With the transformative tales of a former CNN journalist, we underscore the impact of psychedelics on mental health and spiritual enlightenment. Each anecdote, from sharing psychedelic experiences with family to integrating them into our daily lives, illuminates the ongoing dance between the internal self and the external world, inviting listeners to consider the profound growth that can arise from these substances.
We close with a focus on the future of psychedelic medicine and education, contemplating the advances and challenges that lie ahead. Our discussion takes an otherworldly turn as we ponder the possibility of psychedelics as extraterrestrial technologies and the spiritual awakenings they can prompt. So, gather your curiosity and join us for a conversation that spans the intimate details of individual transformation to the broader implications of these ancient yet ever-relevant plant medicines.

22 Dec 2023 | Sean Badders & Jimmy Russel of The Quick & Easy Boys - Magic In The Chaos | 01:56:28
We are so stoked to have Sean Badders and Jimmy Russel of The Quick & Easy Boys in the studio with us this week
The Quick & Easy Boys are a power-trio out of Portland, Oregon who creates their own blend of rock and roll. Imagine the Minutemen, the Police, and Band of Gypsy’s rolled into one.
Formed in 2005, The Quick & Easy Boys quickly made a name for themselves in Eugene, Oregon before relocating to Portland and becoming a renown nationally touring act. Their shows are an interactive party with electrifying stage antics and profound musical moments as the trio pours out every ounce of their energy, leaving nothing behind. The band has gained the reputation for moving a crowd all-night long whether it be a big festival or a tiny watering hole. Founding members Sean Badders on vocals and bass & Jimmy Russell on vocals and guitar play all the notes. Tyrone Hendrix joined in 2018 on percussion. The Quick & Easy Boys have continued to evolve musically…and audiences continue their enthusiastic calling of “Yeah Bud!” at every show.
We get into:
The origin of their particular brand of 'Funkytonk'.
The Quick & Easy Boys' ethos of doing whatever the hell they want.
Their greatest achievement being their brotherhood.
The question of extraterrestrials being physical, interdimensional, or both.
Finding magic in the chaos on stage.
Why its okay for Sean to break the 'no shorts on stage' rule.
How they strive to create a different experience every single show.
... and so much more!

Ric shares his foray into animation and stop-motion videos, which have added another layer of depth to his songs like "Carolina Child" and the "Strange World" EP. As we traverse the magical influence of the Grateful Dead and other musical icons, Ric also delves into the excitement of his impending solo tour and the unique energy that only live performances can conjure. Embark on this soul-stirring ride with us as we celebrate the patience, resilience, and passion that fuel a creative life well-lived.

02 Aug 2024 | Russell Long of The Great North Special - Callithump Heartbeat | 01:33:07
What energizes a band and keeps their creative flame alive amidst the challenges of the music industry? Join us for a heart-to-heart conversation with Russell Long of The Great North Special as he takes us through the band's recent journey, from the release of their album "Callithump Parade" to their transformative experiences navigating life as a band.
Russell's insights into how the band collaborates to develop a unique visual identity are truly inspiring, and you'll feel the camaraderie and connection that make these artistic endeavors possible. Russell opens up about the trials and triumphs of sustaining motivation and creative persistence.
Drawing on Rick Rubin's philosophy of creating art for oneself, we explore the emotional rollercoaster of seeking validation and the importance of community support in pushing through tough times. The discussion also sheds light on the often-overlooked administrative tasks involved in producing a record and the heartfelt gratitude that comes from being acknowledged in an album's liner notes. The essence of building a local community and fostering genuine relationships within the music scene is powerfully highlighted, showing how these bonds fuel artistic growth.
We also reflect on the transformation of underground culture, the balance between digital and real-life experiences, and the impact of technology on our consciousness. Listen in as we celebrate the joy of live music, share recent concert experiences, and highlight the importance of genuine human connections!

Prepare yourself for a laughter-filled interview with John "the Barber" Gutwillig of the Disco Biscuits. The conversation swings from the echoes of their eclipse set to the adventurous leap into film with "Revolution in Motion," ensuring a multifaceted exploration of the artistic process.

07 Apr 2019 | Episode 92 - Growing Up Dead With Cris Jacobs | 02:00:46
When Cris Jacobs began dreaming about a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2016 album Dust to Gold, he realized early on he'd have to do things differently this time around. His life had changed drastically since writing those songs: he'd toured extensively and attracted a legion of new, devoted fans; he'd come off the road into a world, with its divisive rhetoric and troubling headlines, he no longer recognized; and, most importantly, he'd gotten married and had his first child. Things had changed, and Jacobs had, too.
The No Simple Road Crew spends some time talking with Cris about being a Dad, where is music comes from, growing up with Deadhead Parents, his $100 bet with his Dad, playing with Phil Lesh, and so much more!

19 Jul 2024 | Erik Davis - Into The Blotterverse | 01:34:02
Erik Davis, an American writer, scholar, journalist and public speaker whose writings have ranged from rock criticism to cultural analysis to creative explorations of esoteric mysticism, takes us on an unforgettable exploration into the world of LSD blotter art with his latest book, "Blotter: The Untold Story of an Acid Medium".
We discuss the fascinating history of this unique street medium and discover the art's profound cultural significance, spurred by Davis's personal connection with Mark McLeod, the largest collector of blotter art. Erik's multidisciplinary approach shines through as he navigates the labyrinthine process of documenting countercultural history, blending personal accounts and obscure artifacts to craft a compelling narrative.
He shares with us the fascinating process of documenting countercultural history through the kaleidoscopic lens of LSD distribution and blotter art. Erik explains the challenge of piecing together stories from a variety of sources, blending personal anecdotes with historical records to create a rich tapestry that blurs myth and fact.
We delve into the evolution of LSD formats, the complex influence of the Grateful Dead on the acid scene, and the potential involvement of intelligence agencies like the CIA. Erik reflects on his personal experiences with psychedelics and how they shaped his career, offering a unique perspective on the modern, lab-created drug compared to organic psychedelics.
Tune in for a rich and insightful conversation that navigates the multifaceted landscape of psychedelic culture.

This week they've gathered with us backstage at Mississippi Studios before their show here in Portland and we talk about the beginnings of Mapache, how they met, how they got turned on to the Grateful Dead, and how to properly share a burger with your Brother!

22 Nov 2023 | Artist Spotlight - Kendall Street Company | 01:20:19
We are back with another Artist Spotlight with Louis Smith & Ryan Wood of Kendall Street Company!
Virginia's Kendall Street Company are no strnagers to having a wild time. The genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble has drawn varied comparisons to the dynamic jams of Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic, songwriting prowess of John Prine, experimental psychedelia of Pink Floyd, progressive jazz-infused rock of Frank Zappa, and off-color humor of Ween and They Might Be Giants. Including elements of crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedic bits, haphazard choreography, musical improvisation, and surprise musical guests, each Kendall Street Company concert is a n experience unlike any other. You'll laugh, you'll cry. Just remember to stay hydrated.
We sit down with Louis and Ryan for a chat about:
creating the new album 'Separation 95' and what life has been like for them since creating this new work.
Memories of shows where they left feeling on top of the world and also laid flat.
If it's possible to know that you killed it onstage or not, in the moment.
Some antics from Hulaween this year.
How Grateful Dead fans can be persnickety.
The creation process behind some of their amazing videos.
If Becka's Dad is an actual person or not.
Riding the line between scary and comforting.
... and so much more.

05 Mar 2021 | Rich Monroe Author of 'The Conspiracy Diaries: The Light Beyond The Shadows' | 01:48:17
We are excited to bring you Rich Monroe, Author of 'The Conspiracy Diaries: The Light Beyond The Shadows'. Rich Monroe was a young JFK assassination truth activist back in the 1970s. Along with a small group of his trusted friends, he embarked on a quest to expose the cabal that orchestrated the event. His Kennedy assassination research and his involvement in the fledgling “ JFK Truther Community” provided him an opening to explore a secret world, a world filled with a myriad of carefully crafted deceptions, misinformation, and hoaxes. His experiences served as an initiation of sorts, which has helped him evolve his understanding of this strange realm in which we live.
We talk with Rich about writing his new book 'The Conspiracy Diaries', the nature of reality, finding synchronicities, staying clear of the frequencies of fear and finding a loving vibration, Rich's perspective of what happened in the 60's, and a whole lot more.
You can find his book HERE on Amazon.

06 May 2024 | Let's Go Dead & Co: No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind Vol. 73 | 01:04:50
Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between! We produce these episodes in collaboration with The Edible Beats out of Denver, Colorado. Do yourself a favor and head over to their website to find out more!
This week on the rewind we're taking everything we learned while seeing Phish at The Sphere in Las Vegas and laying it out for those of us headed to see Dead & Company over the next few months. Getting into the venue, security, after-the-show scene, and all the rest.
The Sphere venue in Las Vegas is not just a concert location, it's an otherworldly experience that reshapes our understanding of live music. Join us as we recount how the sound system and acoustics of the Sphere left an indelible mark, providing a concert experience that lingers long after the final note. We help you navigate the electric maze that is Vegas during a buzzing weekend of racing and Dead and Company concerts, sharing gems on how to thrive in its pulsing throng, especially for those of us who are more empathically inclined. We even get into a little of Vegas' post-concert psychedelia and how it paints a vivid picture of the city's unique brand of chaos, as we muse over potential setlists and visuals for a Sphere concert that could redefine the Dead and Company experience.
Throughout the episode, we touch upon the community and camaraderie that defines the Dead & Company shows, offering a blend of reverence for the original Grateful Dead legacy and excitement for this fresh chapter. We wrap up with a contemplation of life's journey, likening our individual paths to the meticulous process of alchemy, where challenges transmute into growth and clarity emerges from the chaos.

09 Feb 2021 | Diggin Dirt - Dig This! | 01:50:11
You're in for a treat this week as No Simple Road brings you Diggin Dirt! The whole band joins us to talk about their humble beginnings in Norcal, channeling the muse in order find the sound, what "if you want the crowd to bleed, you gotta hemorrhage" means, what the road back to the stage looks like, and a whole lot more!
Diggin Dirt began planting its roots back in 2011 in the town of Arcata, CA in Humboldt County. The original lineup was a peanut butter and jammed out quintet that consisted of a double guitar rhythm section like no other, and a tenor saxophone...like no other. The original five (Rory Urquhart, Joey Incorvaia, Drew Weitzel, John Callahan and Aaron Gottesman) had high hopes of getting house party gigs and maybe one day performing on a stage. Many, many dreams later, the quintet became seven. As the band took pieces from each chapter and kept moving forward, all the while staying anchored to the heavy groove element that Diggin Dirt has become known for, they began to search.Dirt found its current form when it added a the soul man, Zach Alder, a Humboldt local. His commanding vocal element was a natural addition to the mix. The horn section rounded out its sound with the addition of Humboldt musician Tyler Martin on baritone saxophone.

02 Feb 2021 | The Almost Familiar Podcast - Getting Familiar | 01:52:44
This week on No Simple Road we're stoked to bring you Wes and Elizabeth from The Almost Familiar Podcast! Almost Familiar is a show that asks the questions... is Pretty Lights the Phish of EDM? Is it possible to love Dubstep and Bluegrass? Have you ever called someone a wook or been called a wook yourself? Elizabeth Dreeson and Wes Johnson discuss the evolving landscape of what they call "neo-hippie music festival culture." Wes and Elizabeth have witnessed firsthand this emergent subculture's evolution over the last decade and are interested in looking at the past to make better sense of the present. In taking a look at the past they ran into No Simple Road and a friendship was born! We talk to these two amazing humans about the similarities and crossover between the Phish/Grateful Dead scene and the Pretty Lights Community, what their 'turn-on' moments were like for them, navigating the space of disconnection, and a whole lot more! Plus since this is a swapcast you'll get to hear about the NSR crew's 'aha' moment with Electronica at Summer Meltdown, the smell of burning shoes during a Tipper show, and what's kept us on the bus all these years!
Give them a follow @almostfamiliarpod and check out their show everywhere podcasts stream!

12 Jul 2024 | Mark Karan - Keeping It In The Family | 01:19:01
We are so stoked this week to have Mark Karan, a living legend, on No Simple Road this week!
Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. He has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins.
Mark also tours with an array of amazing musicians in his own “Mark Karan’s Buds”, where his soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work meld with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of his friends in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk and whatever else the muse might bring. In addition to his originals, as well as those of songwriter friends, Mark covers a range of eclectic songs from Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “You Can Stay (But the Noize Must Go)” and Peter Tosh’s “Don’t Look Back”, to the Kinks’ “Lazin’ on a Sunny Afternoon” or Joe Jackson’s “Fools in Love” — his unique musical taste and song choices are the hallmark of these shows, and always crowd pleasers for his nationwide, loyal fanbase.

24 Nov 2023 | Hayley Jane - Living Life From The Inside Out | 01:46:47
We are so excited to have Hayley Jane as our guest this week on No Simple Road!
Hayley Jane’s performance is layered with raw intensity + linguistic prowess. She has a deeply emotive + highly magnetizing presence that’s generating a buzz in the industry.
Hayley pulls inspiration from a variety of styles, including 60s + 70s rock + pop, musical theater, folk, blues, soul, psychedelic, funk + bluegrass. Just as varied, are the many ways she can captivate an audience. Whether the concentrated potency of her solo acoustic performance, the explosive energy + movement of her full band shows, or one of her theatrical performances, she always brings the charisma, humor + passion to move an audience.
Hayley was incredibly vulnerable wit us in this conversation and it's our hope that anyone suffering through addiction or otherwise finds a bit of comfort and a whole lot of support in hearing her story.
We talk with Hayley about:
What finally happened that made her decide to finally get clean and sober.
Being a magical theme park princess.
Figuring out who she actually is onstage.
Becoming a character in order to tell your secrets onstage.
Overcoming the desire to be a 'people pleaser'.
How she fought to overcome negative stories about herself.
The importance of compassion for ourselves and others.
Finding renewed joy and purpose in her new musical project.
... and so much more

08 Aug 2018 | Episode 55 - Neal Casal Takes Us Around The Sun | 01:20:10
Continuing our High Sierra Music Festival interviews with the one and only Neal Casal!!! We sit down with this legendary master of the groove and talk about what it's like to create 5 hours of original music on the fly... and then be asked to do it again, walking the line between playing someone's music and doing something new that feels familiar, and a whole lot more.
Circles Around The Sun explore new horizons on the band's upcoming double album, Let It Wander. It's the first new music from the quartet since their acclaimed 2015 debut, Interludes For The Dead.
LET IT WANDER will be available August 17 on CD for $24.98. A limited-edition vinyl version of the double album will be released the same day for $39.98. All of the music will be available via digital download and streaming services.
Guitarist Neal Casal, keyboardist Adam MacDougall (his bandmate in the Chris Robinson Brotherhood), bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy recorded seven instrumentals for LET IT WANDER earlier this year at Castaway 7 Studios in California.
Originally, Circles Around the Sun (CATS) was only supposed to record some Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concerts. But the response was so positive, and the band was having so much fun making music together, that they all agreed to keep it going.

ANDREW HENDRYX
Did you know that music can accelerate child brain development and strengthen intellectual, emotional, and motor skills, as well as overall literacy? Bringing music into the classroom can help kids explore the mind-body connection and become comfortable with self-expression. Sadly, many children’s music programs are lacking in the resources they need to let kids explore this creative space. That's why Osiris is happy to partner with The Mockingbird Foundation.
Founded in 1996, The Mockingbird Foundation is a volunteer-run non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to music education for America’s youth. Each year, the Foundation awards grants to dozens of music education programs, and funds those grants through a combination of fundraising, publishing, and the curation of Phish.net, one of the earliest Internet fan communities.
Mockingbird is entirely volunteer, with no staff, no salaries, and no office - so every dollar really does make a difference in providing children’s music programs with the staffing, instruments, and support they need. The foundation gives over 100 - 150,000 dollars every year in grants. To donate or to learn more, visit mbird.org. That’s M-B-I-R-D - dot- org

20 Sep 2024 | Rainy Eyes - Healing Harmonies | 01:15:13
We are so excited to have Irena Eide aka Rainy Eyes with us on No Simple Road this week as our guest!
Being a female musician in a male-dominated industry comes with its own set of challenges and nuances. Irena opens up about her experiences in the music business, sharing insights on maintaining a strong, assertive attitude and the importance of mutual respect in an industry often marred by superficial judgments. We dig into her latest album 'Lonesome Highway', collaborating with notable musicians like Rick Robertson, and how all of this serves as a testament to her artistic integrity and emotional storytelling.
We explore the transformative power of music as both a creative outlet and a healing tool. Irena recounts the organic process of recording her album in a serene cabin setting, the support from her parents that fueled her musical passion, and the cathartic nature of bringing long-developed songs to fruition. This episode is a heartfelt exploration of music's ability to connect, inspire, and heal, offering listeners a glimpse into the intimate and powerful world of a dedicated artist.
Make sure to check out the new album 'Lonesome Highway' out now everywhere you get your music and head over to www.rainyeyesmusic.com for tour info, music, and more!

03 Feb 2020 | Big Steve Parish - Story Time | 01:45:46
We're extremely honored to have the one and only Big Steve Parish on No Simple Road as part of our lead up to Skull & Roses Festival. Steve Parish has been a primary member of the Grateful Dead family for 50 years. Steve first joined the band as a roadie in 1969. It wasn’t long before he became Jerry Garcia’s trusted gear handler and began to manage the Jerry Garcia Band. Over the years, Parish and Garcia forged an unbreakable bond. Steve was Jerry’s best man at his wedding and was at his bedside when Garcia fell into a coma in 1986. Parish was the last friend to see Jerry before his untimely death in 1995. Steve has continued to maintain his relationships with the rest of the Grateful Dead family. As Weir once said to him “Blood is thicker than water but what we have is thicker than blood."
We get to hear some amazing stories from Big Steve and get down to the nitty gritty of what it means to be such an integral part of this amazing Grateful Dead Family for over 50 years.

Then, we recap this year's trip to the Oregon Country Fair. This year's trip to Fair didn't disappoint where excitement and interconnection are concerned. To say that it was eventful is a major understatment! You'll just have to listen to hear the full gist of what actually went down.

03 May 2024 | International Orange - Beats and Rhythms | 01:42:59
The comforting rhythm of routine can be just as enchanting as the electric buzz of a live event, as Mel, Apple, and I reminisce about the post-Sphere event bliss and the quirky sprout-hiding antics of our pals Meg and Sean.
This week we're grooving to the soundwaves of International Orange, whose sophisticated beats are the perfect backdrop to our tales — from a virtual listening party to their upcoming New York gigs, we've got the scoop on why this band is a must-see for fans of funky vibes akin to Medeski, Martin and Wood.
Experience the thrill of a live music journey with us as a fan calls in to rave about the Disco Biscuits' tour, sparking reflections on our insightful interview with Barber and the transformative power of their performances. The conversation then sails into the choppy waters of Grateful Dead-centric festivals, pondering the future of these iconic events as we speculate on the potential rise of more intimate, community-driven gatherings. Join us for this candid exploration of resilience in the music scene, personal milestones, and the strangely elastic concept of time that stretches and contracts in the wake of the pandemic.

02 Feb 2024 | Bobby Vega - Whatcha Got | 01:26:26
We are so excited to have the legendary Bobby Vegas with us as our guest on No Simple Road this week!
Bobby began his professional career at age 15 with Bo Diddley, but he achieved wide attention at age 16 for his distinctive picked and muted bassline on Sly Stone’s “I Get High On You” (from Sly’s 1975 album High On You ). Since then he has contributed his soulful feel and incredibly dynamic playing to a long list of world-class artists including: Billy Preston, Booker T., Paul Butterfield, Joan Baez, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Santana , Tower of Power, Etta James, Zigaboo Modeliste, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Starship, Babatunde Olatunji, Kitaro, Ronnie Laws, Hubert Laws, Lee Oskar, Melvin Seals, Cold Blood, and Zero with Steve Kimock.
We had an absolute blast talking to this living legend about his new album 'Whatcha Got', what life was like 'back in the day', how he sees his musical career in hindsight, where he's headed now, and a whloe lot more!

24 Apr 2019 | Episode 95 - Going Down The Road With Mile 12 | 01:40:22
Nate from the Contemporary Bluegrass Band 'Mile 12' joins the No Simple Road Crew this week! This conversation was a real blast and we got into the similarities of playing music and meditation, humanizing tough topics through songwriting, coming to terms with not always feeling up to playing, the place of the spreadsheet in the life of a touring band, and a whole bunch more!
Although their sound is rooted in traditional bluegrass, Mile Twelve surveys a broader landscape on their newest album, City on a Hill. All five band members bring their own influences and observations into the music, resulting in a project that feels contemporary, thoughtfully crafted, and relevant and we're stoked to bring them to you this week!.

29 Sep 2023 | Christian Lopez - Finding Magdalena | 01:09:39
We are very excited to have singer/songwriter Christian Lopez in the studio as our guest on No Simple Road this week!
Rolling Stone says.. "as popularity in Americana rises, Lopez can connect the dots for many young listeners..”
Christian Lopez is not merely riding the wave of Americana Music, the West Virginia native is bending it to its knees. With the will of his voice and the stomp of a steady beat, Christian Lopez is pioneering his own brand of Folk Rock.
Hailed as an Americana wunderkind when he burst onto the scene in 2015, Lopez recorded his debut album, produced by multi-Grammy winning producer, Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton) when he was just 18. Followed up by his critically acclaimed sophomore album, “Red Arrow” in 2017, featuring guests like Vince Gill and Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids).
Since then, Lopez has released 2 albums including “The Other Side” (2021) his latest release “Magdalena” (June 2023) which he wrote and recorded while living in the tiny town of Magdalena, New Mexico.
We chat with Christian about:
Playing music from the age of 5.
How a visiting Dude Ranch as a kid gave him the bug to become a musician.
What was it inside of him that made him give up a full college scholarship in pursuit of a dream.
Ways he connects back to friends and family back home after being on the road for extended periods of time.
The process of using angst as a creative tool in songwriting.
Dropping barriers inside oneself to find your own unique voice.
His experiences in working with major labels as a young man.
Pushing through doubts from those around you.
Finding the place of being unapologetically yourself.
... and so much more!
For tour info, music, merch, and more head over to: www.christianlopezmusic.com and check out the new album 'Magdalena' everywhere you stream your tunes!

30 Jun 2023 | Luke Wientzen of Our Breath Collective - The Feeling You Forgot | 02:19:41
We are extremely excited to have our Brother and member of the NSR Family, Luke Wientzen of Our Breath Collective as our guest on No Simple Road this week! For the past 15 years, Luke has been studying and teaching a broad range of body, breath, and mind practices. A low-back injury in 2012 led him to an in-depth study of breathwork and committing to an ongoing zazen training. Each of these modalities produced profound healing and accelerated heart opening in his life.
We came to know Luke through the synchronicities that abound at Phish which culminated in him becoming our very own Conductor's meditation and breathwork teacher for the past couple of months.
We talk with Luke this week about:
The synchronicities involved in our meeting at various Phish shows.
Getting over the hangups and hesitations surrounding sitting with a teacher.
His perspectives on living in and recognizing 'Deep Heart Mind' awareness.
Why we want to work 'through' our ego rather than fight against it.
His experience of leaving the Phish community and then returning years later.
The origin of 'Our Breath Collective'.
Tackling discomfort head-on.
A few of those amazing stories from recent Phish shows!
... and much, much more!
To find out more on 'Our Breath Collective' head over to www.ourbreathcollective.com

23 Feb 2024 | The Sweet Lillies - Love Prevails | 01:43:03
We are extremely excited to have The Sweet Lillies in the studio with us this week on No Simple Road!
The Sweet Lillies have incorporated all of their cumulative life-experiences into their music, their songwriting, and their artistry, crafting an uncommonly-beautiful style they have christened 'String Americana" - a nod to the band's all encompassing musical tastes and willingness to experiment with genres.
In the midst of one of the craziest storms in decades in the Pacific Northwest the Sweet Lillies were sweet enough to come to the NSR studio to get cozy with us and have a conversation around the life of the band, learning and coming to terms with the need to speak their minds musically with grace and love, the prevalence of magick surrounding our lives, WHat maks us come out of our selves to share our art with abandon, and a ton more!

16 Mar 2021 | Jamel aka Jamal - The Bus Came By And He Got On | 02:53:39
This week on No Simple Road we welcome Jamel aka Jamal to the show! Jamel is responsible for some of the most moving, funny, heartfelt, and creative reaction videos on YouTube. Jamel's reactions to the Good Ol' Grateful Dead drew us in and reminded us of what that moment of realization was like for us. We had to have him on! We sit down with Jamel to talk about growing up without role models, finding the music of the Grateful Dead through his YouTube channel, what the Grateful Dead community means to him, how he got started creating videos, how he met and courted his wife, and a whole lot more!
Make sure to follow both of Jamel's YouTube channels at: Jamel_AKA_Jamal and also Jamel_AKA_Jamal Music & More where he reacts to music and everything else!
