It started with a post to the UFOs Above Canada discussion group on facebook… “Im wondering if there are any people living in Kingston, Ontario. Since December 3, 2020 we have been taking pictures of crafts over our house. Up to 22 craft at once. I also have pics of craft with hatches open and small orbs flying out of them. We are 2 older people who were not looking for this experience, it came to us. I am not technically savvy and need a person to help us to identify, examine and file these pictures. Our story centers around two Canadians who met on the front lines of the race war militant white supremacists hope to start. On one side, we have a journalist with the Winnipeg Free press named Ryan Thorpe and on the other side, we have Patrik Mathews, a Manitoban who moonlights as a recruiter for a secretive neo-nazi hate group. I say “moonlit” as when not conspiring to overthrow the government and create a white ethnostate, He was known as Master Corporal Patrick Mathews… a combat engineer in the Canadian Military. At least, he was before Ryan Thorpe's investigative journalism outed him. Buckle up for this one. A workplace death at a Halifax, Nova Scotia Walmart has become international news due to the incidents unimaginably horrific circumstances. 19 year old Gursimran Kaur and her mother worked together at a Halifax Walmart. During their evening shift on Oct 19th, Gursimran’s mother grew increasingly worried after not seeing her daughter for over an hour. She searched the store, asking coworkers for help. But nothing could have prepared her for the devastating discovery that awaited her in the bakery’s oven. Langenburg, SK - Sept 1974  Saskatchewan farmer named Edwin Fuhr claimed to have witnessed something extraordinary—five metallic, saucer-shaped objects hovering over his field. As he watched in stunned silence, the objects spun rapidly, emitted a grey vapor, and then shot off into the sky without making a sound. What remained were five mysterious circular imprints in the grass—physical evidence that even an RCMP investigation couldn’t explain. Artificial intelligence has become a growing concern among society. Many artists feel it is plagiarizing their work, writers fear it is devaluing theirs, and nearly everyone wonders how it will affect our future interactions with technology and each other. At the time of her disappearance, 27 year old Holly Clark was pursuing her dream to be a professional musician in Hamilton, Ontario. However suddenly, and with little warning, she seemed to find herself on the brink of crisis.  On the morning of January 10th, 2020 Holly phoned her parents in Calgary to request help returning home. During the call Holly would share the frightening, yet vague, details of a traumatic experience that led her to spending the prior night running for her life from either a real or imagined threat.  It was obvious she needed help but shortly before her father arrived, she walked out of her apartment and into the cold air and pouring rain.  In this episode of Nighttime we will again be joined by her father Dave and employer Elle to discuss the heartbreaking update to this case. In this multi-part series the death of Sia Van Wyck is explored. On July 19th of 2017, seven year old Sia Van Wyck was killed by a man driving a combine tractor while playing in a field in rural Nova Scotia. An RCMP investigation deemed the death a tragic accident that was not criminal in nature however her family, her supporters, and their respected private investigator believe the investigation was fundamentally flawed from the start and had it been handled properly things may have likely turned out very differently. This episode takes us to Prince George, British Columbia. On the evening of August 1, 1989 Ronnie and Doreen Jack went to their neighbourhood pub looking for a bite to eat and a few drinks. Instead, they found a mystery man with an enticing job offer that would forever change their lives and the lives of everyone who loved them. Ronnie would do logging, Doreen could help in the kitchen, and their two kids would be taken care of at the remote camps daycare facility. Transportation wouldn't be a problem either, the mystery man could drive them to the camp that night. The last time any member of the Jack family was seen was only a few short hours later… packing some of their belongings in a truck. In Tisdale, Saskatchewan, 27 year old Latasha Gosling and her three children—Jenika, Landen, and Jenayah—were murdered by her boyfriend, 23 year old Steve O'Shaughnessy. In his final cruel act, Steve sent photos of their bodies to the children’s father as a disturbing "birthday gift" before fleeing with his infant daughter. I've always found Cemeteries a calming and peaceful place but not everyone is comfortable roaming their twisted paths and especially so under moonlight. If that describes you, you may find this episode a bit uncomfortable at first as roaming around a graveyard is exactly what we are going to do. I've called upon Craig Ferguson, a local man who spends a considerable time amongst the dead, to take the lead. He produces a unique project that merges art, journalism, and story Telling called Dead in Halifax. His work starts with a headstone catching his eye and leads to a fact finding mission into the life and dead of the person buried in the ground below. It's like a modern history lesson for goths. On May 6, 2020 three year old Dylan Ehler was visiting his grandmother’s home in Truro, NS. While playing in the back yard, his grandmother turned her back to Dylan briefly to leash a dog. At some point during that moment of inattention, Dylan vanished. Despite nearly a year of searching, the only evidence located was Dylan’s two rubber boots, both found caught amongst debris in shallow brook that flows a short distance from where he was last seen. In a prior episode, Dylan’s father Jason Ehler joined us and shared the story of his missing son, including his thoughts on the level of care Dorothy provided Dylan prior to his disappearance.  That discussion with Jason made me realize that Dorothy's story is crucial in understanding what may have happened to the three year old boy at the center of this story. Up until now Dorothy has largely remained silent, allowing others to tell her story.  But that will change with this episode. If you follow Canadian news, you've likely heard about the horrific murder that recently occurred on the patio of a Starbucks in downtown Vancouver.  37 year old father Paul Schmidt was stabbed to death in an altercation that began with him asking a man to not use an electronic cigarette so close to his 3 year old daughter. If being brutally murdered in front of your child and in broad daylight wasn't enough, Paul's horrific last moments were celebrated by a bystander who captured the violence on video and shared his footage online. When scrolling through the news over my morning coffee, I found myself face to face with what can only be described as the most controversial garden in St. Catharines, Ontario. Just after 4pm on August 18th, of 2021, 76 year old Paul Doughty walked up to McKay’s Wild Blueberrie’s roadside stand in Pennfield, NB and purchased a blueberry pie and a small cupcake style treat. Security camera footage shows the thin elderly man pay the cashier with a bill he pulls from his pocket before he walks out of view towards his parked vehicle pie in hand. This otherwise completely uneventful interaction is the last time Paul Doughty was seen and his family is desperate for answers. At the time of her disappearance, 27 year old Holly Clark was pursuing her dream to be a professional musician in Hamilton, Ontario. However suddenly, and with little warning, she seemed to find herself on the brink of crisis.  On the morning of January 10th, 2020 Holly phoned her parents in Calgary to request help returning home. A very small number of Nighttime listeners have served on a jury, but many more know someone who has. Regardless which side you fall on, chances are the trial involved was fairly mundane and unremarkable... but that’s not always how it happens. Think of someone you know, perhaps a painfully innocent aunt. What happens when they get assigned to a case involving some of darkest evidence imaginable? how do they get through it? how do they cope? and who picks up the pieces after the verdict is delivered? Very few are better positioned to answer those questions then our guest Mark Farrant. In 2014, a letter arrived at Mark’s door indicating he was in a pool to serve on the jury for an upcoming murder trial, and to put it simply, he hasn't been the same man since. The trial was that of Farshad Badakshan, a man accused in the horrifically brutal killing of his girlfriend. The graphic details Mark was immersed in had left him with the crippling symptoms of PTSD and to make matters worse, laws that serve to provide jurors privacy have made it nearly impossible for mark to get treatment. This has been the fuel for one of Canada's fiercest advocates for the rights of Canadian jurors. In this multi-part series the death of Sia Van Wyck is explored. On July 19th of 2017, seven year old Sia Van Wyck was killed by a man driving a combine tractor while playing in a field in rural Nova Scotia. An RCMP investigation deemed the death a tragic accident that was not criminal in nature however her family, her supporters, and their respected private investigator believe the investigation was fundamentally flawed from the start and had it been handled properly things may have likely turned out very differently. After leaving her home to collect overdue rent from the tenants of an apartment she had been renting, Loretta became the victim of a senseless and brutal series of events that added her name to the very list of missing and murdered indigenous that she had hoped her work would reduce. The Halifax Airport John Doe is an unidentified man who was found deceased in a forested area near the Halifax Stanfield International Airport in October of 2004. He was found hanging from a tree with many of his personal possessions, yet no identification. After releasing the prior episodes in this series, outlining my son's ufo event and the MUFON organization, I've heard from listeners curious if (and to what extent) the Canadian government is involved in the reporting and investigation of UFO events.    In this episode of Nighttime I'll speak to someone well positioned to tell us all about our governement's surprising history with the UFO phenomena.   When Trent University PHD Candidate Matthew Hayes was considering a topic for his doctoral dissertation, he found inspiration late at night while exploring one of the many rabbit holes a google search for "UFOs" found him in. At some point during the early morning of July 5, 2004, 5 year old Tamra Keepness seems to have simply vanished from her home. The facts of that evening, as well as the behaviours of the adults responsible for Tamra's care, are more than a bit hazy. Alcoholism, drug abuse, sex work, and domestic violence all find their way into Tamra's last known night and all obscure the trail she left behind. 24 year old Cortney Lake was last seen the evening of June 7, 2017 in the area of her Mount Pearl, NL home. At the time of her disappearance, Cortney’s life was in a state somewhere between transition and turmoil. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior. When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend. Feb 2014, Halifax, NS 26 year old Loretta Saunders – a proud Inuk woman – was in Halifax completing her university thesis on the topic of Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. After leaving her home to collect overdue rent from the tenants of an apartment she had been renting, Loretta became the victim of a senseless and brutal series of events that added her name to the very list of missing and murdered indigenous that she had hoped her work would reduce. At the time of her disappearance, 27 year old Holly Clark was pursuing her dream to be a professional musician in Hamilton, Ontario. However suddenly, and with little warning, she seemed to find herself on the brink of crisis. On the morning of January 10th, 2020 Holly phoned her parents in Calgary to request help returning home. During the call Holly would share the frightening, yet vague, details of a traumatic experience that led her to spending the prior night running for her life from either a real or imagined threat. It was obvious she needed help but shortly before her father arrived, she walked out of her apartment and into the cold air and pouring rain. When one imagines the setting for a story involving experimental weapons, international espionage, unexplained aerial anomalies, and cold war anxieties...  they probably aren’t picturing a tranquil island in Newfoundland.  But, there is no imagining about it, Bell island, Newfoundland, is just that. This all stems from a still unexplained aerial explosion that rocked the skies about the island, and set in motion a series of bizarre events that seemed pulled from the pages of a science fiction novel. The entire ordeal still leaves those who lived through it scratching their heads, but one thing is without question, for a moment in 1978, Canadian and American defense satellites detected more light reflecting from this island than what was seen during the bombing of Hiroshima and we aren’t certain why. 26 year old Emma Fillipoff was last seen standing barefoot on a busy intersection in downtown Victoria BC on November 28th, 2012 by the police officers who encountered Emma after responded to a call of a women in distress. In 2015, on the eve of Valentine's day, the people of Halifax would learn that they aren’t exempt from the type of nightmares that play out on American news stations.  A local 19 year old James Gamble and his girlfriend, 23 year old American Lindsay Souvannarath, had taken the first steps in their plot to shoot and kill as many people as possible in the Halifax Shopping Centre food court before taking their own lives, just like the murderous pair they idolized… the Columbine shooters. When 20 year old Ryan Shtuka stepped out of his comfort zone and embarked on an adventure with a close friend their plan wasn't anything risky or dangerous.. it was quite simple. They'd spend the winter in the mountains of British Columbia working at one of Canada's most beautiful ski resorts.  But as it turned out, something went wrong; no one knows what exactly. What we do know is that his family, his friends, and an army of volunteers have been searching tirelessly hoping to find him, or any trail he may have left after leaving a houseparty during the early morning hours of Feb 17th.  In this episode we hear the story of the life, the disappearance, and the search for Ryan Shtuka. I only need to walk a block or two in any direction from my home to see a poster pleading for information related to the disappearance of 16 year old Devon Marsman. Devon was last seen in late February of 2022, and since then there has been little in the way of reliable details, tips, or sightings. The most significant thing those searching for him have learned is that Devon seemed to have maintained two separate sets of personal relationships. One group his parents knew about and another group they didn't. As you may have guessed it’s the later group are the people Devon spend his last known days with... and their ever evolving stories have done nothing but obscure the trail left behind. **This is a rewritten and remastered version of a 2015 episode** In 2015, When I first launched Nighttime, One of the first requests I made to listeners was for story ideas that took place in, or in some way involved, the forest. The first response I received, lead me to this episodes story. Myles MacKenzie sent me an email sharing the story of an animal encounter he and some high school friends had in the woods of Pictou County Nova Scotia.  Actually, "Animal Encounter" is a bit of and understatement. Don't roll your eyes before you hear the story but, Myles and his friends, they believe they encountered the legendary Bigfoot.  It happened back in 2003, when Myles and a few members of his track team were running sprints in the dense woods of the Green hill provincial park.  Whatever the group encountered, it wasn't like anything they nor their coach had experienced before or since. In a past episode, I shared the story of Romana Didulo, the Pilipino immigrant who, from a bedroom in a Victoria, BC boarding house, convinced a surprising number of Canadians that she is the true queen of Canada and our Kingdom's commander in chief. Via a series of follow up episodes we also heard how she and her followers attempted a sort of twisted siege of a Peterborough police station. Despite the failed arrest of a police force, Romana Didulo and her followers haven’t slowed down. Earlier this month they arrived in Kamsack, Saskatchewan with plans to rebuild the town under Didulo’s rule only to be chased out of town by locals… but they didn’t travel far. The Queen and her followers are now sheltering in an abandoned school house in the town of Richmound, Saskatchewan and the towns people have been circling it in protest almost since their arrival.
