12 Jan 2023 | If You Want To Be Unsteady | 00:05:23
In today's episode, I explore the sources of unsteadiness in my life and how I can address them. I reflect on how losing sight of what is within my control and what isn't can lead to feelings of unsteadiness. At first, I attribute this to external factors such as work and finances, but I ultimately realize that all unsteadiness comes from within. I recognize that my environment does not determine my level of calm, stability, or serenity, and that these instead are directly related to my judgment and reasoned choices. I acknowledge that taking responsibility for my own emotions can be difficult but also empowering. I commit to making a concerted effort to avoid harmful and disruptive judgments that cause more trouble and instead to focus on what's within my sphere of choice, in order to achieve stillness and peace. I encourage others to also take their lives back into their own hands, and to regulate how they handle themselves, as this has an impact on their environment. 20 Jan 2023 | Wherever You Go, There Your Choice Is | 00:08:06
"Welcome to Navigate The Day, where we explore the power of choice and how it shapes our lives. Today's quote, from Epictetus, reminds us that wherever we go, our freedom of choice is always with us. But what happens when we find ourselves in low points, where the challenges we face seem insurmountable and our choices limited? That's what I've been contemplating today, and I want to share my thoughts with you. I've been struggling with finances and my job, feeling like I have no control over my life. It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day and feel like we have no options. But I'm learning that it's important to remember that we always have choices, even in the most difficult situations. We can choose to give up or to keep pushing forward. And while it may feel like we're running into a brick wall, it's important to remember that change takes time and we have to be patient with ourselves. I know it's hard to see the beauty in places others overlook, especially when we're in a low point. But I'm learning that it's important to find grace and harmony in the little things, and to focus on what's in our control. I'm also learning that success and happiness are subjective, and what matters to me may not matter to someone else. It's easy to get caught up in the negative, but it's important to remember that we have the power to change our perspective and our circumstances. It may not be easy, but it's worth it. So, wherever you go, remember that your freedom of choice is always with you, and that you have the power to shape your life, no matter the situation. 20 Jan 2023 | Reignite Your Thoughts | 00:07:15
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," we explore the power of reigniting our principles and ideals to start living again. As Marcus Aurelius reminds us, our principles can't be extinguished unless we snuff out the thoughts that feed them. We have the power to reignite new ones and to see things anew, just as we once did. The journal prompt for this episode is "How can I rekindle my principles and start living today? How can I reawaken my ideals and begin living again today?" As I reflect on my own principles, I realize that honesty, hard work, and professionalism have always been important to me. However, I feel like I abandoned them for a while, and now I'm working to reignite them in myself. Time freedom and self-reliance are also values that I want to focus on. I recognize that I haven't been doing enough to make progress towards those goals, and it's time to set specific and measurable goals that align with my principles and values. Reflecting on my core values and setting goals for the future is an important step in finding direction and clarity in my life. 21 Jan 2023 | A Morning Ritual | 00:05:44
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," we delve into the power of a morning ritual and how it can help us gain clarity and focus on our principles and values. Using the words of Epictetus, we ask ourselves what we are lacking in attaining freedom from passion, tranquility, and what our true identity is as a rational being. Journaling is a powerful tool in this process, as it allows us to reflect on our actions and how they may have steered us away from our serenity. Through consistency and self-reflection, we can begin to see the small gains we make each day and celebrate them, building a solid foundation for our ideal life. We also discuss the importance of positive thinking and being honest with ourselves about our underlying problems and stresses, using them as opportunities to develop grit and resilience. Ultimately, journaling is a way to empower our circle of choice and navigate the ups and downs of life with a clear and focused mind. 23 Jan 2023 | The Day In Review | 00:06:11
Today's episode of "Navigate The Day" is all about reflecting on our actions and habits. I took a moment to review my day and identified a negative behavior I struggle with: using my words as weapons. While I did have some success in curbing this habit earlier in the day, I unfortunately failed at it later on. But I remind myself that every challenge is an opportunity for growth and improvement. I also touched on the struggles with procrastination and imposter syndrome, and how these negative behaviors can punish us in the long run. I acknowledged my worries about my financial situation and my current social circle, but I also recognized that I am getting better at regulating my emotions and not allowing them to overwhelm me. I remind myself that consistency is key to success, and that we shouldn't beat ourselves up for small setbacks. By putting each day up for review, we can make progress towards becoming the best versions of ourselves. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 24 Jan 2023 | The Truth About Money | 00:05:47
In today's episode of "Navigate The Day", we dive into the topic of possession and its impact on our lives. As I reflect on Seneca's quote, "let's pass over to the really rich一how often the occasions they look just like the poor!", I realize that possessions don't define us as individuals. I share my own struggles with housing and how it has affected my stress levels and self-worth. I also reflect on how money and possessions cannot bring peace and true happiness in our lives. Instead, I focus on self-improvement and inner peace as a means to navigate the day. As I plan for my future, I remind myself to be less harsh on myself and to focus on the progress I am making, rather than fixating on material possessions. 25 Jan 2023 | Push For Deep Understanding | 00:06:10
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," we explore the concept of deep work and how it relates to personal growth and self-improvement. Through journaling, we reflect on our own experiences with deep work and how it relates to our daily lives. The journal prompt for this episode is "Am I doing deep work?" The episode starts with a quote from Marcus Aurelius, "From Rusticus…I learned to read carefully and not be satisfied with a rough understanding of the whole, and not to agree too quickly with those who have a lot to say about something." The episode delves into the idea that while journaling is a form of deep work, it is important to also apply this level of critical thinking and analysis to other areas of our lives. The speaker reflects on their current job as a cultivation assistant and how it is not mentally stimulating, and how their focus often shifts to feeling that their work is unfulfilling and not worth the time or effort. Furthermore, the speaker reflects on their goals and plans and the realization that they may have been skimming through them and not doing deep work. They also discuss the concept of imposter syndrome and how it relates to their current situation and future aspirations. The speaker concludes by acknowledging that change is not easy and that they need to spend more time immersed in deep work and stop taking varied inputs and instead focus on one specific thing to gain a deep understanding of it. 26 Jan 2023 | The Only Prize | 00:08:47
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", I delve into the question of what it truly means to prize something. Marcus Aurelius's words in Meditations, specifically 6.16.2b-4a, have been ringing in my head lately. He suggests that by limiting our actions or inactions to only what is keeping with the needs of our own preparation, we will find the only thing that is truly valuable. I have always been obsessed with self-improvement and education, but I find myself feeling envious of others who have external possessions or status. Despite years of trying different methods, such as studying, meditating, and even using drugs and alcohol, I still can't shake these feelings. I also question the idea that by focusing on inner development, I will be able to live in harmony with others and align myself with the natural order of the world. I feel like my personal development hasn't really changed anything, and that I'm just filling empty space with activities. I know I need to take genuine action, and focus on my goals and aspirations. I also need to reframe my values and interests, and let go of the things that no longer serve me. And I want to test out the idea of positive chaos and the law of attraction, maybe by doing random acts of kindness. In conclusion, Marcus is trying to teach us that by prioritizing one's own personal development and self-respect, one will be able to avoid feelings of envy and jealousy towards others, and instead find contentment and satisfaction in one's own progress. I need to remember to check that what I want is of true importance and not in the grip of externals that are out of my control. 27 Jan 2023 | The Power Of a Mantra | 00:06:40
In today's episode of Navigate The Day, I delve into the power of a mantra and its potential to shape our thoughts and actions. I share my personal struggles with finding mantras that resonate with me and how I've drawn inspiration from Marcus Aurelius and Ryan Holiday to come up with my own. The mantra I've settled on is, "I have the power within to resist negative influences and maintain control over my thoughts and actions." I also discuss the concepts of responsibility and accountability and how they play a role in our lives. I reflect on my own experiences with blaming outside forces for my unhappiness and how I need to take more accountability for my actions. I also touch on my recent therapy sessions, where it was suggested that I may have ADHD and how it doesn't change my belief that I have control over my response to it. I encourage listeners to reflect on their own mantra and to be authentic when coming up with it. Life is about making adjustments incrementally, as we and our goals change with time and experience. I hope that this episode helps listeners to find their own personal mantra that can help them navigate their day. 28 Jan 2023 | The Three Areas Of Training | 00:06:52
Welcome to "Navigate The Day", a podcast where we explore the ancient philosophy of Stoicism and how it can be applied to our daily lives. Today, we'll be discussing the three areas of training as outlined by Epictetus in his Discourses. First, we have the area of desires and aversions, which is all about making sure that we never miss the mark in our desires and avoid falling into things that repel us. Next, we have the area of impulses to act and not to act, and more broadly, duty. This is about making sure that we act deliberately for good reasons, and not carelessly. Finally, there's the area of freedom from deception and composure, which includes the whole area of judgment, and the assent our mind gives to its perceptions. Personally, I've been studying Stoicism for a while now, and it's been a really productive journey so far. I've realized that I need to take a step back and figure out what my true interests and desires are. I've been so focused on improving all aspects of my life, mainly finances and career, that I haven't had much time to explore my hobbies or form new relationships. One area that I've been working on is impulsive behaviors. I quit drinking about two years ago, and it's been a game changer for me. It's brought new routines to my life and has helped me grow a lot. Now, I wake up at 4:15 A.M and start my day with exercise, which helps me get my body ready for the day. I also take time to read over a passage and journal prompt for the day, which helps me reflect on my thoughts and emotions. I also make sure to read a lot, mostly philosophy, biographies, self-help, business, and finance books. I find a lot of pleasure in learning, and I believe that reading on a variety of subjects helps me keep an open mind. However, I know that I need to broaden my subject matter to keep growing. One area that I'm still working on is defining what a good desire is, and focusing more of my attention on it. I know that I have the power within to resist negative influences and maintain control over my thoughts and actions. This is something that Epictetus talks about in his passage, and it's something that I need to keep in mind. Sometimes, my internal thoughts can be misleading, and I need to remember that it's ultimately my choice how I react to everything outside of my control. Overall, I believe that continuing this journaling practice and Stoic training with an open mind is the best thing I can do for myself right now. It's becoming a habit, and it's inspiring me to take on other projects and take more reasonable risks in the near future. I hope that this episode has been helpful, and I'll see you next time on "Navigate The Day". 28 Jan 2023 | Watching The Wise | 00:05:22
In today's episode of "Navigate The Day," we dive into the topic of measuring ourselves against others. As Marcus Aurelius said, "Take a good hard look at people’s ruling principle, especially of the wise, what they run away from and what they seek out." It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others, especially those who seem to have achieved more success than us. But it's important to remember that we all have our own unique paths and goals. Personally, I've been guilty of measuring myself against others in terms of financial success, but I've realized that this isn't a healthy way to measure progress. Instead, I want to focus on internal possessions, like wisdom and values. One person who I admire and want to learn more from is Gary Vaynerchuk. I appreciate the messages he puts out into the world and the values he holds, such as kindness and empathy. But I also recognize that it's important to not just measure myself against one person or role model. I need to sit down with myself and figure out what kind of person I want to be and what kind of life I want to live. From there, I can narrow in on more rulers to measure myself against and strive to be like. This will bring me closer to being my authentic self. Another subject that I am particularly interested in is stress and how to handle it better. Stress affects us all and it's important to learn from those who have figured out how to live with it without allowing it to affect their internal conditions. This is what draws me towards stoic teachings. I've realized that I can't eliminate stress, but I can find ways to work with it instead of against it. Moving forward, I plan on paying more attention to what those I want to be more alike are doing, and equally as important, what they aren't doing, to see if there are any behaviors that are stunting my growth. In conclusion, it's important to remember that we all have our own unique paths and goals and it's not healthy to compare ourselves to others in terms of external possessions. We should focus on internal possessions, like wisdom and values, and find role models and rulers to measure ourselves against. It's also important to pay attention to how we handle stress and learn from others who have mastered it. 31 Jan 2023 | You Don’t have to Stay On Top Of Everything | 00:06:09
"You don’t have to stay on top of everything." That's the quote from Epictetus that inspired today's episode. The truth is, there's a lot of information and distractions in our lives that don't actually matter, and it's okay to be clueless about them. In fact, it's more than okay, it's liberating. When we free ourselves from the pressure of knowing everything, we open up more time and energy for what truly matters to us. I personally embrace being clueless about things that don't matter, like popular TV shows and movies. During the pandemic, I filled my days with activities that were more meaningful to me, like working on home projects and taking care of my lawn. I don't struggle with FOMO anymore. Our time is limited, and we shouldn't waste it on things that don't align with our values. Growth begins when we take the time to consider what's important to us, and being content with not knowing everything gives us the power to control our focus and attention. Trying to stay on top of everything distracts us from our goals and drains our mental energy. Media is designed to keep our attention at all costs, but we have the power to choose what we give our attention to. It's natural for us to seek comfort, even in bad habits, and to pay attention to things that aren't necessarily important to us. But it's important to remember that what interests others may not be what's best for us, and vice versa. By freeing ourselves from the unnecessary worries about what others think of us, we can focus on ourselves, our values, and our goals. In conclusion, embracing the idea of being clueless about things that don't matter, and not caring about them, allows us to live more present and focused lives. I plan to continue filtering the information that comes into my life, and only pursuing what I truly believe is worth my time and energy. 01 Feb 2023 | Philosophy As Medicine Of The Soul | 00:08:01
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", I delve into the idea of using philosophy as medicine for the soul. Inspired by Marcus Aurelius' words in "Meditations", I encourage listeners to approach philosophy not as a task-master, but as a tool for healing and dealing with life's challenges. I reflect on my own experiences with journaling and implementing stoic practices in my daily life, and how they have helped me deal with the emotional ups and downs of my job. Despite feeling intimidated at times, I share how the process has been empowering and how I am growing more confident in my ability to handle life's challenges. Overall, I encourage listeners to embrace philosophy as a tool for healing and to trust in the process of growth and self-discovery. 02 Feb 2023 | For The Hot-Headed Man | 00:07:09
Hello and welcome to Navigate The Day! Today, we're going to dive into the topic of conquering our tempers and getting control of our emotions. As Marcus Aurelius so beautifully put it, "gentleness and civility are more human, and therefore manlier. A real man doesn’t give way to anger and discontent, and such a person has strength, courage, and endurance." And I couldn't agree more. Now, I must admit, my temper has been one of my biggest challenges in life. I've put a hole in a fridge door, broken mirrors, punched holes in walls, said hurtful things to those I care about, all because of my anger. And while alcohol played a role in some of these instances, the truth is, my temper has been a difficult demon to tackle for a long time now. 03 Feb 2023 | A Proper Frame Of Mind | 00:06:57
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", I reflect on how emotions and impulsive reactions can rob us of self-control. Drawing inspiration from Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, I examine my own tendencies to become sad, depressed, or worried when faced with negative situations. I also delve into my tendency to get into disputes rashly and become angry, which has caused rifts in my relationships with family members. I acknowledge that these negative emotions and impulsive reactions have been hindering my growth and independence. To become self-sufficient, I must work on developing resilience and self-control, so that I am not controlled by these emotions. This journey of self-discovery and improvement is ongoing, and I look forward to opportunities to cultivate self-control, such as unexpected changes in my work schedule. I encourage listeners to take a step back and reflect on their own impulsive behaviors and emotions. Consider what actions you can take to cultivate self-control and resilience. And, as always, I invite listeners to join me in this daily journey of reflection and self-improvement. 04 Feb 2023 | The Source Of Your Anxiety | 00:06:51
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", we explore the source of anxiety and how to take back control from it. Epictetus, a Greek philosopher, once said, “When I see an anxious person, I ask myself, what do they want? For if a person wasn’t wanting something outside of their own control, why would they be stricken with anxiety?” I admit, anxiety often has control over me, causing me to worry about things like the weather, work, and finances. But when I think about it, I realize that some of these worries stem from things that are within my control. By focusing on changing my behaviors, I can alleviate my anxiety. However, if the source of my anxiety is beyond my control, I need to take a step back and ask myself if my anxiety is doing me any good. Is it helping me solve the problem or is it just noise that I need to tune out? Anxiety can feel overpowering and it's easy to get caught up in the negative self-talk that often comes with it. But by fighting for control over my mind, I can avoid letting anxiety dictate my thoughts and emotions. I do this by recognizing that my worries are often centered around things that I have no say in and instead focusing on things that I can control. In conclusion, it's important to understand the source of our anxiety and to take back control from it. By doing so, we can navigate our day with more ease and peace of mind. 04 Feb 2023 | On Being Invincible | 00:06:24
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," I dive into the concept of being invincible by exploring my power to choose. The quote by Epictetus, "Who then is invincible? The one who cannot be upset by anything outside of their reasoned choice," sets the tone for my discussion. I reflect on my own journey towards cultivating invincibility and share my experiences with losing my cool and how I've been working on handling my emotions better. I also talk about the importance of identifying my values and priorities in life, and using that as a framework for making decisions. I highlight the significance of information gathering and considering the pros and cons before making a decision. I also emphasize that developing reasoned choice takes practice and patience, but by being intentional and consistent in my decision-making process, I can improve my ability to make well-thought-out choices. I draw inspiration from the teachings of ancient stoics and modern stoics such as Ryan Holiday to live better and become invincible to the struggles of life. I remind myself that the journey towards invincibility takes time and patience, but the work is worth it, and with time and practice, I will become stronger and more resilient to the challenges life throws at me. 06 Feb 2023 | Steady Your Impulses | 00:06:14
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," I delve into the theme of steadying impulses by exploring the idea of submitting every action to the claims of justice. The quote by Marcus Aurelius, "Don’t be bounced around, but submit every impulse to the claims of justice, and protect your clear conviction in every appearance," sets the tone for the discussion. I reflect on my own journey of trying to control my emotions and how I've been working on handling them better. I share my personal experience of losing my cool and getting into an argument with a friend, which resulted in me saying some hurtful things. I regret my actions, but I also know that I need to learn from this situation and grow from it. I emphasize the importance of slowing down and considering the consequences of our actions before reacting to a situation. I also acknowledge that it takes practice and patience to develop this habit of thinking before acting, but it is worth the effort. I draw inspiration from the teachings of ancient stoics and modern stoics, such as William Shakespeare, to live a better life and control my impulses. I remind myself that change is inevitable and that embracing it is key to growth. I encourage myself to practice mindfulness to be more present in the moment and avoid impulsive behavior. With time and effort, thinking before acting can become a habit that will serve me well in life. 06 Feb 2023 | Don’t Seek Out Strife | 00:06:17
In today's episode of Navigate The Day, we take a closer look at the concept of avoiding unnecessary conflict in our lives. I reflect on my personal experiences with seeking out strife, often driven by a fear of being still and an addiction to activity. I realize that by doing so, I'm throwing myself into conflict that I don't need to be in, and that this can compromise the quality of my work. I discuss the idea of struggle being noble, but only if it's for the right reasons. I admit to being guilty of relying on others for my self-worth and worrying about letting people down. However, I recognize that this is not healthy and I need to stop feeding into these fears. I also touch on the danger of letting opinion dictate our actions, and how this can poison our progress. I acknowledge that avoiding conflict is easier said than done, especially if we don't realize that we're actively seeking it. In summary, I want to emphasize the importance of focusing on our goals, and being okay with calm from time to time. I want to make sure that my work is of a higher caliber and deeper focus, so that I don't find myself filled with regret down the road. Remember, it's okay to seek peace instead of war. 07 Feb 2023 | Fear Is A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy | 00:06:18
In this episode of Navigate the Day, I delve into the topic of fear and worry and how they can hold us back from achieving our goals. Fear is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and I believe that action is the best way to conquer it before it conquers us. To overcome my fears and worries, I first identify the root cause and categorize them into things I can control and things I cannot control. I also challenge my negative thoughts by asking for evidence or looking for alternative perspectives. It's important to focus on things I can control, such as my thoughts and conduct, to feel empowered and let go of stress and worry. I also practice self-compassion, positive self-talk, and seek support from friends, family, or a therapist when needed. Overcoming fear and worry takes time and practice, and I remind myself to be gentle and patient with my progress. I have been seeing a therapist for almost a year and a half now and it has made a real difference in helping me navigate my fears and worries. Remember that seeking help is never a sign of weakness. Keep working on it, and you will be on your way to overcoming your fears and worries. 09 Feb 2023 | Did That Make You Feel Better? | 00:06:49
In this episode of Navigate the Day, we delve into the question of whether outbursts ever make things better. Through self-reflection and introspection, we come to the realization that our emotional outbursts rarely solve the problem at hand, but rather create new ones. We explore the idea that complaining and crying out when we're unhappy doesn't change the situation, and that focusing on what truly matters is more productive. By taking control of our emotions and thoughts through journaling and having a healthy internal dialogue, we can work towards a more stable and fulfilled life. This episode encourages listeners to check themselves before they let their emotions take control and to make a conscious effort to curb habits that only hinder progress. The host shares their own struggles with anger and fear and acknowledges the importance of self-improvement. In conclusion, this episode offers inspiration and encouragement to listeners to take control of their emotions and focus on what truly matters. 10 Feb 2023 | You Don’t Have To Have An Opinion | 00:06:38
In this episode of Navigate The Day, I explore the idea of not having an opinion. Marcus Aurelius said, "We have the power to hold no opinion about a thing and not let it upset our state of mind, for things have no natural power to shape our judgments." This thought has been on my mind a lot lately, especially considering how many opinions I form on a daily basis. I ask myself what would happen if I didn't have an opinion on things that upset me or stress me out. Would I be more prepared for the negative events that happen in my life? Would I be less judgmental towards my family and coworkers? I realize that having an opinion often leads to agitation and a negative outlook on life. It's all too easy to label things as good or bad, but this only adds unnecessary stress to my life. Instead of jumping to judgments, I try to think of things as if I had never heard of them before. This helps me approach things with a more neutral mindset and reduces the weight I place on opinions, both my own and others. In the end, I believe that focusing on not having opinions and practicing this skill will lead to a more peaceful and stress-free life. By letting go of opinions, I can instead give support, empathy, and compassion where I can and just enjoy the company of others. 11 Feb 2023 | Hero Or Nero? | 00:06:10
Welcome to Navigate The Day, where we explore the ups and downs of life and find the courage to be our best selves. Today's episode is a reflection on our own behavior and the impact it has on those around us. As Seneca once said, "Our soul is sometimes a king, and sometimes a tyrant." We can either be a ruler of our emotions, or let our uncontrolled desires and impulsivity lead us into negativity and destruction. This is a reminder that we have the power to choose how we navigate our day. In today's episode, I delve into my own struggle with self-control and the consequences of my actions. I had a conversation with my girlfriend that spiraled out of control and resulted in a breakup. I was overwhelmed by fear and anger, and let my emotions take over, causing harm to not only myself, but also to the person I care about most. Looking back on the situation, I realized that I haven't been fair to my girlfriend and haven't shown her the love and appreciation she deserves. This experience is a wake-up call for me to work on myself and be more empathetic, rather than dwelling in misanthropic misery. So let this be a lesson to us all. We have the power to choose how we act and react, and our actions have a ripple effect on those around us. Let's make the choice to be a good ruler of our souls, and navigate our days with empathy, love, and kindness. 13 Feb 2023 | Protect Your Peace Of Mind | 00:06:19
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", I reflect on how I've traded in my peace of mind for things that don't necessarily bring me fulfillment or joy. I admit to letting my fears hold me back from pursuing a career that I truly desire, and the recent breakup with my girlfriend has made me realize that my financial stress and constant complaining played a role in the end of the relationship. However, I'm grateful for the chance to communicate more openly with my girlfriend, as we both want to work on rebuilding our relationship. I embrace the Stoic philosophy of being an ambassador of my emotions instead of a slave to them, and journaling has helped me express my thoughts and feelings in a more genuine way. I'm also determined to improve my relationship with money and see it as a tool for abundance. By accepting where I am currently, I'm learning to live more in the moment and prioritize what truly matters. 13 Feb 2023 | Pleasure Can Become Punishment | 00:05:38
Greetings everyone, welcome to "Navigate The Day". Today, we're exploring the theme of "Pleasure Can Become Punishment". In this episode, we'll be diving into the idea that what we often perceive as pleasure can, in fact, turn into a burden and hold us back from reaching our full potential. I personally have experienced this in my own life. I used to drink frequently, but now that I have quit for the past two years, I see the negative impact that drinking had on my life, including wasted time and money, hangovers, and arguments. Now that I've cut out this vice, I feel clearer and more in control. I've also realized that my pleasure of seeking knowledge and learning about entrepreneurial and business topics has become a source of stress and dissatisfaction. It feels like I'm just going through the motions instead of actually taking action. This has led me to question whether I need to take a break from learning and start doing instead. So, what about you? Take some time to reflect on which of your pleasures may actually be punishments in disguise. Write down your thoughts in your journal and see what insights you gain. Remember, it's not about cutting out every source of pleasure in your life, but rather being mindful and intentional about what brings us joy and what holds us back. Thanks for joining me on this episode of "Navigate The Day". Remember to tune in next time for more insights and inspiration on navigating life. Take care. 14 Feb 2023 | Think Before You Act | 00:05:47
In this episode of Navigate The Day, we delve into the importance of listening to your inner voice. As we explore the quote by Heraclitus, "For to be wise is only one thing—to fix our attention on our intelligence, which guides all things everywhere", we consider the power of our intelligence and the need to trust and cultivate it. We reflect on the importance of pausing to listen to our inner voice, especially when faced with new impressions and the risk of acting impulsively without reason. Meditation is one tool that can help us achieve a clearer mind and better awareness of our emotions and physical reactions. However, like any habit, consistent practice is key in seeing the benefits. We discuss the struggles of balancing the need for a clear mind with the realities of everyday life and the importance of noticing when we ignore our inner voice. In conclusion, we remind ourselves of the need to live our lives under our terms and not let outside factors control us. By paying attention to our inner voice and cultivating our intelligence, we hope to make choices that align with our goals and aspirations. 16 Feb 2023 | Only Bad Dreams | 00:05:19
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," we explore the power of our emotions and the importance of questioning whether they truly make sense. As I reflect on the journal prompt, I realize that I tend to rationalize any emotion, but it's essential to consider whether they are serving a purpose in the given situation. For example, anger can be useful as a warning sign that something isn't sitting right with me, and fear rarely makes sense since it doesn't change the likelihood of the fear becoming reality. I have noticed that I have a duality in my mindsets where I can be quite logical and structured, but also give in to my stronger emotions quickly. However, I've realized that many of the things that upset me are a product of my own untamed thoughts. If I can separate myself from the stories I tell myself, I can see them as simple stories that hold no grip or position in reality. By questioning the sense of our emotions, we can determine which signals we need to pay attention to and which ones are nonsense causing us to suffer at our own hand. I'm going to keep this prompt at the ready to remind myself to question whether the emotions I am feeling in that moment make sense or not. Let's wake up and see that what's there is just like those bad dreams, and we have the power to navigate our day with intention and clarity. 16 Feb 2023 | Don’t Make Things Harder Than They Need To Be | 00:05:34
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", I am reminded of the importance of not making things harder than they need to be. The episode starts with a quote from Marcus Aurelius, encouraging me to complete my duties methodically and pay attention to each task. The journal prompt asks me to reflect on what I am making harder than it needs to be. I realize that I often fight completing necessary tasks out of fear or overthinking, making life more difficult for myself. I share personal examples of how I make life harder, such as avoiding medical appointments and feeling stuck in my career. However, I come to the realization that it's time to stop getting worked up over trivial matters and take action. The episode ends on an inspirational note, reminding me to tackle tasks methodically and not make things harder than they need to be. 18 Feb 2023 | The Enemy Of Happiness | 00:05:24
Today's episode of "Navigate The Day" is all about happiness and how it can be the enemy of itself. I was inspired by a journal prompt that asked me to reflect on the happiness that I might be putting off and could have right now. As someone who values freedom of time, I expected to be happy on a day off from work, but instead I found myself worrying about money and feeling anxious. I realized that I had been prioritizing money over time, even though I have savings and am doing okay financially. This made me think about how much I was letting worry rob me of happiness in the moment. Looking back on my journal entries, I realized that I had been so caught up in chasing future goals that I was forgetting to enjoy the present. Just like a traveler who focuses so much on reaching their destination that they forget to enjoy the journey, I was so focused on achieving future goals that I was missing out on the present experiences. So, I made a decision to stop postponing joy and happiness. I learned to be more grateful for what I already have and to focus more on the present moment. By doing this, I found that I could enjoy the journey as well as the destination. The most valuable thing I have is my choice, and I choose to focus on the here and now, rather than what I don't have. 18 Feb 2023 | Prepare For The Storm | 00:06:09
In this episode of "Navigate the Day," we focus on the importance of being prepared for the storms that life throws our way. As I reflect on my own life, I realize that I need to undergo rigorous training to combat false impressions. This means having a plan in place for when these impressions arise. For me, this includes practices like meditation, journaling, and cultivating self-awareness and inner peace. I've come to understand that no matter how much I try to avoid it, there will always be something that agitates me. But by preparing myself ahead of time, I can face these struggles with composure and maintain my inner freedom. This freedom comes from knowing that I have the tools I need to face any challenge. One of the tools I've recently rediscovered is meditation. Even though I've only been practicing for a week, I already see the benefits. It helps me calm down and refocus, especially during a busy work day. I've also learned that preparation means looking ahead to the tasks I need to complete the next day. By keeping my word to myself and structuring my day, I am able to get more done and avoid being swept up in my own stress and strain. However, I've also come to understand that preparation isn't just about practical tasks. It's also about preparing my own mindset and reframing my thoughts to be more productive. This includes recognizing and acknowledging my negative perceptions and false impressions and working to combat them in a new way. In the end, the struggle is real and ongoing, but by undergoing thorough training and preparation, I know that I have the ability to face any challenge with mastery, freedom, happiness, and tranquility. 19 Feb 2023 | The Banquet Of Life | 00:06:20
In this episode of "Navigate the Day", I focus on the banquet of life and how we approach it. I share the quote from Epictetus about conducting oneself at a banquet, taking a moderate helping of what's passed around and not burning in desire for what hasn't yet arrived. I then pose the question to myself: "Am I happy with my portion at the banquet of life?" I share my own struggles with burning desire and the realization that my needs are already being met. I reflect on the fact that the odds of being born are incredibly low and that cultivating gratitude and patience is important. I also acknowledge that fear of failure has stopped me from pursuing goals in the past, but that I can find satisfaction in the present moment. Overall, the episode encourages me and other listeners to reflect on our own relationship with desire, gratitude, and patience in approaching the banquet of life. 20 Feb 2023 | The Grand Parade Of Desire | 00:07:48
In this episode of "Navigate The Day", I reflect on my past experiences with chasing pleasures and desires that ultimately didn't bring me true fulfillment. I realized that I had let my ego take the driver's seat and pursued fame and surface level connections that weren't truly fulfilling. However, as I enter a new season in my life, I am learning to focus on more meaningful pursuits, such as improving my personal finances and setting clear goals for myself. I recognize the importance of self-discovery and taking the time to understand my strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve my fullest potential. Through journaling and practicing stoicism, I am learning to pursue rational and intelligent change for the better. Ultimately, I am coming to the realization that true fulfillment comes from within and I must focus on pursuing desires that align with my inner self rather than external forces. 22 Feb 2023 | Wish Not, Want Not | 00:07:02
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," the focus is on the idea of being mindful of our desires and not letting them control our lives. The quote from Epictetus reminds us that it's not just the desire for wealth and position that can subjugate us, but also the desire for peace, leisure, travel, and learning. The journal prompt encourages us to think about what we can stop yearning for. The host shares their personal experience of letting their desire for leisure control their decisions, which left them vulnerable and feeling like they wasted time. They still have mixed emotions about their desire for wealth and adequate living conditions, but they understand that desires aren't inherently bad, it's only when they control our lives that they become problematic. The host emphasizes the importance of balance and not allowing one desire to cost them all of their other desires. They also acknowledge that they are the only ones who can release themselves from the shackles of yearning, and the only way to maintain self-control is to not hold expectations of what their life should be. The episode ends with the idea that we should control the things we strive for rather than letting them control our decisions. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 22 Feb 2023 | What’s better Left Unsaid | 00:07:13
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," the theme is centered around the idea of whether or not we should speak our minds or if it's better to leave things unsaid. The episode begins with a quote from Plutarch's Cato The Younger, which emphasizes the importance of knowing when to speak and when to remain silent. As I reflect on this prompt, I realize that in the past, I have been impulsive with my words and actions, which has caused me problems. However, I've learned that not everything needs to be said and sometimes it's better to pause and analyze before reacting. I've also realized that complaining doesn't solve problems, and it's important to take action if I'm truly unhappy. Although I follow the advice of others who encourage me to be grateful for my job and be a "good" employee, I can't help but feel unfulfilled and stuck. Perhaps I need to embrace this new way of thinking and put more effort into productive and useful actions. Looking back on my life, there are actions that could have been left undone and words left unsaid. However, I believe that it's important to continue this journaling practice, even if it makes me uncomfortable, as it allows me to reflect and learn from my mistakes. And, even though I may have omitted a paragraph fueled by impulsive emotions, I saved it as a reminder of why I'm continuing with this practice. In conclusion, I believe that it's important to weigh the consequences before speaking our minds and determine if what we want to say is truly worth it. Sometimes it's better to leave things unsaid and focus on taking positive action in our lives. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 23 Feb 2023 | Circumstances Have No Care For Our Feelings | 00:06:22
In this episode of "Navigate the Day," we explore the idea that circumstances have no care for our feelings. As Marcus Aurelius wrote, we should not give circumstances the power to rouse anger because they don't care at all. It's a journal prompt that asks why we get angry with things if anger doesn't change them. We often label situations in our lives as unfair or bad, but circumstances are neutral forces. The only time a circumstance becomes good or bad is when we decide it to be so. We can choose to let our emotions win or we can take our lives into our own hands. It's important to remember that this work on our inner and emotional framework never ends, and it's pointless to stress over a lack of progress. We should not let external events that we can't control ruin our lives. It's silly to act as if circumstances intend to harm us when they're not sentient beings. In the episode, I share a personal experience of forgetting my watch and earbuds, which meant my work day was going to be pretty dull. At first, I was irritated, but I decided not to get mad about it. Getting agitated and letting it affect me wasn't going to change the fact that I forgot my items. Instead, I accepted my circumstances and went on with my day. It's a small step forward for me, but it's a great one. Life doesn't care about our feelings because it doesn't have any. It's up to us to choose how we react to our circumstances. We can let anger hold us back, or we can turn it into positive, productive action. 24 Feb 2023 | The Real Source Of Harm | 00:06:25

25 Feb 2023 | The Smoke And Dust Of Myth | 00:07:07
In this episode of Navigate The Day, we explore the idea that holding onto anger and resentment is not worth it in the long run. We are encouraged to take a step back and think about the bigger picture, and to consider the examples of others who have been consumed by negativity. By doing so, we can gain a new perspective on our own emotions and learn to let go of things that are not serving us well. The journal prompt asks us to consider whether we will even remember a fight in a few months. We are reminded that most fights are forgotten shortly thereafter, and that holding onto grudges and resentment can hurt us in the long run. We are encouraged to reframe our relationship with money, embrace the lack of structure in our day jobs, and approach life as a game to be played smarter. By taking the time to reflect on what fights are worth fighting, we can sort through our priorities and make sure we're not fighting uphill battles that aren't worth it in the first place. Remember, life is not linear, and it's better to enjoy the present and let go of the external noise that is not serving us well. 27 Feb 2023 | To Each His Own | 00:07:32
In this episode of "Navigate The Day," we explore the idea that we should focus on our own nature and what we can control in our own lives, rather than being consumed by other people's shortcomings. The quote from Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations," "Another has done me wrong? Let him see to it," reminds us that we don't need to take on the responsibility of fixing someone else's behavior or seeking revenge. As I reflect on this quote and the journal prompt it inspires, I realize that I often care too much about what others are doing or how they are handling their lives. I get frustrated with coworkers who don't pull their weight or don't share my level of professionalism. However, I now see that it's not within my control to correct or assist in their life circumstances. Instead, I need to focus on myself, my actions, and my thoughts. By letting go of the burden of feeling the need to solve everyone else's problems, I can accomplish more for myself and give more to those around me. Other people will always have their own perspectives and tendencies, but their problems and tendencies don't need to affect me unless I allow them to. By disregarding the missteps of others and focusing on what I can control, I can be more useful to my friends, family, and society as a whole. I am reminded of the importance of shutting out external noise and listening to my inner self. I no longer want to let my temper run rampant or allow others to have control over my views or actions. Aurelius is suggesting that we should accept that people have their own proclivities and problems, and it's not our job to solve them. We should focus on what is within our own control and work towards achieving our own goals and desires. In conclusion, I am inspired to focus on my own personal growth and development, rather than worrying about others' leanings and difficulties. By accepting that others have their own inclinations and complications, and that it's not my responsibility to fix them, I can avoid unnecessary stress and frustration. Ultimately, by changing my energy towards my own personal growth and development, I can achieve a more fulfilling life. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 27 Feb 2023 | Cultivating Indifference Where Others Grow Passion | 00:07:47
In this episode of "Navigate the Day," the focus is on cultivating indifference to unimportant things. Through mindfulness practices like journaling, meditation, and yoga, we can develop the ability to observe our thoughts and emotions without getting carried away by them. By letting go of what's outside our control and taking action on what we can, we can create trust that things will work out as they should. By examining our own beliefs and values, we can start to build a clearer sense of purpose and direction in our lives. The journal prompt asks us to consider how often we question the things others take for granted. It's important to examine our guiding principles and values, to give our lives more direction and clarity. 03 Mar 2023 | Accurate Self-Assessment | 00:06:27
In this episode of "Navigate the Day," we explore the importance of accurate self-assessment. As Seneca once said, it's crucial to have a true self-estimate, as we often overestimate our abilities and think we can do more than we really can. I've personally struggled with accurately assessing myself. Sometimes, I tend to think too highly of myself, while other times, I underestimate my abilities. Through the journal prompt in this episode, I was able to explore my own self-assessment. I realized that I tend to focus on my weaknesses and downplay my accomplishments. It's important to acknowledge our strengths and give ourselves credit where credit is due. At the same time, we need to recognize areas where we need improvement and work on them. In the past, I had unrealistic expectations for myself, and it led to disappointment and frustration. However, I've learned from those experiences and adjusted my mindset accordingly. By setting realistic expectations and being patient with myself, I can work towards a fulfilling and meaningful life. I think it's essential to take the time to reflect on our true worth and assess ourselves accurately. With accurate self-assessment, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve our goals. 07 Mar 2023 | Don’t Tell Yourself Stories | 00:06:50
Welcome to "Navigate The Day", where we explore the art of mindfulness and living a purposeful life. In today's episode, we dive into the topic of "Don't Tell Yourself Stories", inspired by the wisdom of Epictetus, and Ryan Holiday. As I reflect on this quote, I am reminded of the times when I have been a loud mouth, whether it be boasting about my accomplishments or complaining about my problems. But by practicing humility and respect for others, we can cultivate stronger relationships and achieve greater success in our personal and professional lives. It's important to recognize where we are being a loud mouth, whether it be in social situations, at work, or even in our own inner dialogue. By becoming more aware of our tendencies, we can take action to shift our mindset and behavior towards a more positive and productive direction. As we navigate our days, let's remember to stay present and mindful, acknowledging both the good and the bad without getting lost in our own stories. Welcome to Navigate the Day, where we explore ways to navigate through life's challenges and emerge as better versions of ourselves. Today, we're going to talk about testing our own opinions before trusting them completely. As someone who has struggled with making quick judgments and holding onto biases, I understand the importance of testing my own opinions. It's easy to fall into the trap of seeing the world through a narrow lens and forming opinions based on a limited perspective. But by taking the time to research and explore different viewpoints, we can gain a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of our own opinions. One of the biggest challenges in testing our own opinions is acknowledging that we may be wrong. It's natural to want to hold onto our beliefs, but it's essential to be open to changing our minds when presented with new information. By doing so, we can grow and evolve as individuals. Another crucial aspect of testing our own opinions is recognizing the role our emotions and biases play in shaping them. It's easy to let our feelings cloud our judgment, but by staying mindful of our emotional state and actively working to overcome our biases, we can make more informed decisions. Of course, testing our opinions isn't always easy. It requires patience, open-mindedness, and a willingness to be wrong. But by doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In conclusion, testing our own opinions is an essential part of navigating through life's challenges. By acknowledging the limitations of our own perspectives, staying mindful of our emotional state, and being open to changing our minds, we can emerge as better versions of ourselves. 10 Mar 2023 | Find The Right Scene | 00:10:16
In this episode of Navigate The Day, I explore the idea that the people we surround ourselves with can have a strong influence on who we become as a person. I start by sharing two quotes from Epictetus and Musonius Rufus that emphasize the importance of being mindful of our social circles. I then dive into my personal experience with different social circles, starting with my lack of a social circle at work due to the lack of professionalism in some of my previous workplaces. I also touch upon my decision to distance myself from some of my family due to their negative influence. When it comes to my circle of friends, I discuss how some have made me better and others have made me worse, particularly during the time when I used to drink excessively. I talk about the difficulty of being torn between two communities - the addicts and the sober - when trying to get clean. Nowadays, my circle of friends is small, and although it isn't making me any worse, it isn't necessarily making me better either. I admit that I find it challenging to find positive and supportive people in person and that I am met with the thought that I am incapable of reaching my goals due to my location, upbringing, and education. To conclude the episode, I reflect on the importance of being mindful of who we choose to spend time with and try to surround ourselves with positive influences that can help us find direction and purpose in life. I also suggest joining groups and trying to have more communication with people taking positive actions. Overall, it's important to find the right scene and to surround ourselves with people who will lift us up and help us become the best version of ourselves. The quote from Epictetus reminds us that true beauty comes from within and is reflected in the choices we make in life. Through a personal journal entry, we see the struggles of making good choices, especially when it comes to appearance and societal standards. 18 Mar 2023 | Impossible Without Your Consent | 00:07:28
In this episode of Navigate The Day, we explore the idea that our assumptions and perceptions about the world can often be more limiting than the actual circumstances we face. By questioning and challenging those assumptions, we can break free from the "crush of circumstances" and regain a sense of agency and control over our lives. Through a personal journal prompt, we examine the bad assumptions we hold that hold us back from living a fulfilling life. We discover that self-deception is a nasty habit to dispel, and that seeing our discomforts and feelings as influenced by other people or external factors outside of our control is unbeneficial for us. We learn that our all-or-nothing mentality and fear of failure can hold us back, and that assuming the worst possible outcome regardless of how likely it is to actually occur is a harmful habit to break. Through meditation and visualization, we can calm our nerves and improve our performance. Ultimately, we discover that by dispelling these assumptions and perceptions, we can open ourselves up to discovery and learning, and live a free and fulfilling life. It's important to remember that the only way we can be affected by external factors is by creating internal conflict, which only hurts us in the end. So let's break free from our limiting assumptions and live our best lives, because anything is possible with our consent. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 19 Mar 2023 | Timeless Wisdom | 00:07:02
In this episode of "Navigate the Day," we explore the timeless wisdom of Epictetus and his teachings on taking responsibility for our own thoughts and actions. The quote "there is nothing good or bad outside my own reasoned choice" reminds us that external events or circumstances do not have the power to control us unless we allow them to. By focusing on our own choices and how we respond to them, we can take control of our lives and live more fulfilling and peaceful lives. Accepting the reality of the present moment and adapting to it, rather than trying to control or manipulate events to fit our desires, is key to living a fulfilling life. This involves being present, aware, and responsive to what is happening around us. By following these two rules, we can free ourselves from unnecessary worry and stress, and focus on making the most of our own choices and actions. 21 Mar 2023 | Ready And At Home | 00:06:55
Welcome back to Navigate The Day, where we explore the ways in which we can navigate the ups and downs of life with resilience and grace. Today, we dive into the idea of being ready and at home in the face of adversity. As we heard from the quote by Seneca, it's not about wishing for adversity but cultivating the virtues that make adversity bearable. So, the journal prompt for today is, "Am I cultivating the virtue that makes adversity bearable?" As I pondered this question, I realized that I have been struggling with cultivating the virtue of courage. I have let negative self-talk and fear hold me back from facing my reality with determination and resilience. However, I know that I cannot expect to avoid difficult situations in life, so I need to work on developing my courage. Another virtue that can make adversity bearable is patience. While I have been able to practice patience in certain areas of my life, I still find myself getting impatient when it comes to my overall career goals. I need to remind myself to be patient and trust the process, and not be too hard on myself if I don't have everything figured out yet. Self-control is another virtue that can help us navigate difficult situations. While I still have some work to do in this area, I am becoming more aware of my impulses and emotions and trying to control them in a more productive way. Finally, cultivating virtues such as humility, perseverance, and gratitude can also make adversity more bearable. It's important to remember that cultivating these virtues is a process that takes time and dedication. We should not be too hard on ourselves if we are struggling in one area, but rather focus on making progress and practicing these virtues in our daily lives. So, let's continue to cultivate the virtues that make adversity bearable, and strive to face challenges with courage, patience, self-control, humility, perseverance, and gratitude. Remember, it's not about wishing for adversity, but about developing the inner strength and resilience to face whatever life throws our way. In this episode of Navigate the Day, we explore the concept of finding the best retreat within ourselves, rather than seeking external escapes. Drawing from Marcus Aurelius' wise words, we learn that true peace and calm can only be found within one's own soul. The journal prompt for today is "What if I sought peace where I am right now instead of in distant lands?" This is a powerful question that encourages us to cultivate a sense of calm and tranquility within ourselves by developing practices that help us manage stress and anxiety. Our host shares their personal experience with meditation, breathing exercises, and simplifying their environment to create more peace in their daily life. They also plan to incorporate more outdoor activities, such as riding their bike and spending time in nature, to help them feel more grounded and at peace. Ultimately, seeking peace where we are right now is about recognizing that inner peace is not dependent on external circumstances or locations. We can cultivate this inner peace through intentional practices and habits that promote calm and tranquility. So, let's take Aurelius' advice and treat ourselves often to this retreat within ourselves and be renewed. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 23 Mar 2023 | The Sign of True Education | 00:07:50
In this episode of Navigate the Day, we explore the concept of education and its relationship to schooling. The quote from Epictetus reminds us that being properly educated means learning to apply our natural preconceptions to the right things according to nature, and separating what lies within our power from what doesn't. As we reflect on this quote and today's journal prompt, we may realize that we have been confusing schooling and education. The speaker shares their personal experience of feeling defeated by both the lack of formal education and the feeling of not being well-educated. However, they remind us that education encompasses all the experiences that contribute to our intellectual, emotional, and social development. The missing piece for the speaker is action, but they have taken steps towards it by meeting with an admissions assistant for Arizona State University and their aunt, who is a realtor. Through their reflection, they learn to accept where they are currently while taking steps to move forward. It is crucial to focus on the things that we have control over, such as our thoughts and actions, and not worry about things that are outside of our control. While schooling is important, it is not the only aspect of education. It is possible to receive a great education without attending school, and vice versa. The speaker concludes by acknowledging that they still have work to do, but they are committed to continuing their inner work and getting closer to living a more peaceful and fulfilling life. 30 Mar 2023 | Why Do You Need To Impress These People Again? | 00:07:11
On this episode of Navigate the Day, we dive into the topic of impressing people and why it's important to focus on being a philosopher in all aspects of our lives. Drawing from the teachings of Epictetus, we learn that trying to impress others by controlling external factors beyond our control can ultimately lead to damaging our own purpose in life. Instead, we should strive to be content with ourselves and our actions, and embody the values and principles of a philosopher. During the journal prompt, we explore why we care so much about impressing people and come to the realization that impressing ourselves should be the ultimate goal. While it's natural to want to make a good impression on those around us, we should be careful not to put up a facade that can lead to a lack of authenticity and trust. Instead, we should focus on being our own biggest fan and taking care of ourselves. So let's all take a moment to reflect on our own lives and strive to be the best versions of ourselves. Let's be content with who we are and what we do, and embrace the philosophy of living a fulfilling life. Remember, the person we should be impressing the most is ourselves, and by doing so, we can inspire others to do the same. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! 31 Mar 2023 | Reason In All Things | 00:07:22
Welcome back to Navigate the Day! Today’s episode delves into the importance of ruling our lives with reason. We look at the passage from Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" and explore how we can apply its three perspectives to our lives. We are encouraged to consider our own inner voice and conscience, the broader perspective of society and the universe, and to be empathetic towards others' perspectives. By being mindful of these different perspectives, we can lead a more just and fulfilling life. The journal prompt for today encourages us to reflect on what rules us if not reason. It prompts us to think about the things we allow to govern our decisions and actions. I found myself relating to this prompt on so many levels. I have been guilty of allowing my emotions, desires, and fears to control me in the past. It’s frustrating to realize that the things that we let rule us are often things that we can't control. However, I realize now that this is not a sustainable way of living. One thing that really stood out to me was the idea of external influences like social pressure or cultural norms. This made me think about how our society shapes our lives in ways that we don't even realize. We are all products of our environment, and it can be difficult to see beyond that sometimes. But it's important to question our role in society and to make sure that we are living our lives in a way that is authentic to us. As we navigate our lives, we must remember to be ruled by reason, not impulse. It's so easy to act on automatic or instinctive responses rather than thoughtful and deliberate decisions based on rational thinking and evidence. However, as we begin to take control of our lives and rule ourselves with reason, we can begin to live a life that is less ignorant and more fulfilling in the long term. Remember, we all have the power to change our lives for the better. By taking responsibility for our actions and thoughts, we can make deliberate moves towards a life that is led by reason and wisdom. Let's continue to navigate our lives with purpose, and always remember to be ruled by reason in all things. Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery! On today's episode of Navigate the Day, we dive into the concept of chasing impossible goals and how it can lead to frustration and a waste of time and resources. But can we stop chasing impossible goals? The answer is yes, and it starts with focusing on what is within our control and setting more realistic goals. As we explore this idea, we learn that chasing happiness may not be the best approach to living a fulfilling life. Instead, we can focus on choosing the right kind of stressors that will help us grow into the person we want to be. We also discover that letting go of unrealistic goals can be a process that takes time and effort, and it may require reflecting on our priorities and practicing acceptance of what is within our control. Our host shares their own experience with this concept, including a recent job shift and uncertainty about their future. They also discuss their desire to attend a specific school but feel limited by their current financial situation. However, they realize that their desire for rewards without the risks or challenges required is unrealistic, and they are willing to face the challenges that come with achieving their goals. In conclusion, we are all products of our training, but that does not mean we cannot change our approach and mindset. By focusing on what is within our control and setting more realistic goals, we can stop chasing the impossible and start living a fulfilling life. The quote by Marcus Aurelius reminds us that our thoughts have a significant impact on the shape of our minds and the overall state of our spirit. We become what we think, and our thoughts have the power to shape our perceptions and experiences. The journal prompt for this episode asks us to reflect on what thoughts are coloring our world. By being mindful of our thoughts and trying to cultivate a positive and constructive mindset, we can shape our experiences in a more positive way. Our thoughts are one of the few things we can control, and we have the power to choose what color to paint our world. Hey there, welcome back to Navigate the Day! Today's episode is all about being discerning in our circumstances and learning to be mindful of our thoughts and actions. We're diving into a passage from Seneca's Moral Letters that highlights how easily we can be deceived by circumstances and our own desires. Seneca reminds us that we have a tendency to embrace evil before good, and that our desires can change quickly and drastically. This inconsistency can lead to conflict within ourselves, such as when our plans or prayers conflict with each other. But by being mindful and discerning, we can approach circumstances with wisdom and make choices that align with our values and principles. Today's journal prompt asks, "Are my plans at war with my other plans?" This is a common struggle for many of us, especially when we have a plethora of plans and can't seem to choose one path. We may be afraid of choosing the wrong one or of failing, leading to stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts. But as Seneca suggests, we need to be discerning and approach our plans with wisdom. We can't have everything we want, but we can choose the path that aligns with our values and desires. It's important to be mindful of our fears and insecurities, and to challenge negative thoughts that hold us back. Welcome to Navigate the Day, where we explore the power of mindfulness and self-reflection in our daily lives. Today's episode is all about the idea of "Trust, But Verify." In this passage from Epictetus, he reminds us not to let our emotions and initial reactions control our behavior. Instead, we should take a step back and analyze the situation more closely to make a more rational decision. As we reflect on this concept, we pose the question: What would happen if we stopped to verify our opinions and initial reactions? It can be challenging to question our own emotions and impulses, but doing so can help us make better decisions and avoid regret. We hear from our host who shares their personal experience with questioning their thoughts and emotions. They admit to feeling overwhelmed and allowing fear to take control. They also share their struggle with questioning their opinions and how they sometimes worry that they may be wrong. 09 Apr 2023 | Test Your Impressions | 00:09:53
Welcome back to Navigate the Day! Today’s episode is all about testing your impressions, inspired by a powerful quote from Epictetus. Epictetus advises us to challenge our initial impressions and examine them using the rules and principles we have learned, with the goal of approaching our perceptions with a rational and objective mindset, rather than being swayed by our initial emotional responses. The journal prompt for today asks, “Can I take a step back and test my impressions? What would I find if I did?” As I reflect on this prompt, I realize that while I am eager to question myself, I sometimes fall into a loop of not trusting my own judgment, leading to inaction. However, by using my circle of control as a tool for evaluating situations, I can narrow down what I have to worry about and respond with rationality and a well-thought-out plan. Taking a step back and reflecting on our thoughts and emotions in the present moment can help us become more aware and make more informed decisions. However, I also realize that I may not always be critical enough of my own beliefs, assumptions, and perceptions. Ultimately, by continuing to educate ourselves and cultivate a solid character, we can navigate towards a more kind, robust, and fulfilling life.
