And in Politics Are Everywhere– we got beef with Wendy’s. Wendy’s is planning to institute “surge” pricing like Uber and Lyft, a move that would disproportionately affect black and brown communities.

A Minnesota state senator claims that kids in his state don’t need free school lunches because he’s “never met a hungry person in Minnesota…” OK. JD Vance advocates his “plan” for making childcare more affordable: call grandma. And Gov DeSantis goes full propaganda mode to protect Florida’s 6-week abortion ban, while using Florida law enforcement to harass pro-choice supporters. God forbid anyone commit the most heinous crimes of being born a woman or a hungry child in a poor family…

Victoria Pannell is an activist, organizer, and social impact strategist. In 2012- 2016, Victoria served as Northeast Regional Director of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network Youth Movement. Victoria helped organize the March 14, 2018 National School Walkout, a call to action for gun reform, and in 2022, Victoria created Blue Shelter, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of survivors of human trafficking. She currently serves as Senior Social Impact Advisor and Director of Social Media Management at Inspire Justice.

 

Ty Hobson-Powell led the “51 For 51” Washington D.C. statehood campaign and founded Concerned Citizens Demanding Change. In 2024, he managed the Mail-In Ballot Processing Division for D.C.’s Board of Elections. He’s been appointed State Political Program Director in Mississippi, supporting a major voter engagement initiative with Mississippi Votes. His upcoming book, The Fire Right Now—a nod to James Baldwin—is slated for release this summer. 

 

Marley Dias is a celebrated changemaker and one of the youngest people to appear on Forbes 30 Under 30. She launched #1000BlackGirlBooks, collecting over 15,000 books featuring Black girl protagonists. A junior at Harvard, Marley is also the host and executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.

BUT Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, has signaled that he’ll bend (READ: Break!) the law to allow Trump to vote. The hosts also take a look at voting after conviction more broadly and the stigma that follows returning citizens even after they’ve served their time.   

 

The hosts also dissect a viral video of a man who faced incarceration after driving with a suspended license…hilarious as it may seem, there’s more to this video that mainstream media missed.

For this week’s deep dive: Minority Rule. Minority rule is when a minority of the population has the majority of the power. Sound familiar? The hosts ask how a shrinking minority of white male conservatives are able to pass laws and policies that most of us don’t actually want. It goes alllll the way back to the beginning, y’all, maybe our democracy isn’t so democratic? 

 

We’re also shedding some light on the importance of Black Maternal Health Week. Black and Brown mothers are about three times as likely to die during childbirth. These are totally preventable deaths, we gotta talk about it!! 

 

As we all know, politics are everywhere, and this week they’re in women’s sports. College basketball star, Caitlin Clark, and some of our faves like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, were just drafted into the WNBA, and folks are upset about how LITTLE they’ll be paid compared to their NBA counterparts. It is literally a fraction of a percent, y’all…  

 

Then, Native Pod goes green as Tiffany clarifies the politics of cannabis for this upcoming 4/20 weekend. And of course, the hosts respond to your comments and questions. We are 200 days until Election Day 2024!

Over 200 staffers from Bush, McCain, and Romneys’ teams have endorsed the Harris/Walz ticket as mainstream Republicans jump ship; Angela knows exactly how their support ought to be used. 

 

Meanwhile, efforts to suppress the vote pick up steam in Texas as the MAGA election-deniers take over. Texas AG Ken Paxton ordered SWAT-style raids on the homes of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) members. Their supposed crime? Helping folks in their community register to vote…as they’ve been doing for decades... 

 

And the NFRA (National Federation of Republican Assemblies) proposes that VP Harris is not eligible to be president, citing a slavery-era Supreme Court decision. It seems Republicans will do anything to win besides just getting the votes–they are definitely scared y’all.

Shutdown or Shut Up: Why Won’t Dems Fall in Line? Reflecting on Bloody Sunday

Pastor Jamal Bryant has called for a fast of Target stores, a 40 day boycott that started on March 6th. The company has rolled back DEI initiatives despite being one of the largest employers of Black Americans. Our hosts check on the progress of the fast and discuss how to minimize harm. 

 

A government shutdown is looming, funding runs out at midnight this Friday unless Congress can pass a new budget. Republicans want to pass a stop-gap measure called a “continuing resolution,” a slimmed down version of the current budget that would put off decisions on a new budget until the Fall. They need Democratic votes to get it through the Senate. Is there any reason Democrats should comply? 

 

While the new Education Secretary Linda McMahon lays off 50% of the Department of Education’s workforce, Trump sends threatening letters to universities. Citing civil rights laws, the Trump admin says it will pull federal funding from schools that allow pro-Palestinian protests. 

 

We’ve just passed the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when civil rights marchers fighting for the right to vote were attacked by police while peacefully marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. How far have we come since then?

Protests against the war in Gaza have spread from Google to  Morehouse, NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Yale University (among others). What is up with framing the student-led, anti-war protests as antisemitic? We unpack it on the pod!

On Tuesday, lawyers for the two remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre appealed to the state’s Supreme Court to allow a reparations case to move forward. The two survivors, Mother Randle and Mother Fletscher, would like their day in court, and a chance to seek justice for the horrific crimes committed against them and their community– with involvement from Tulsa authorities, by the way. Is that too much to ask??

With guests Terrance Woodbury, Democratic pollster, and Gary Chambers, civil rights advocate and perennial candidate (you might remember his blunt-smoking campaign ad). 

 

One thing the data makes plain: there is a significant difference of values between many Black men and Black women. In a conversation that at times becomes heated, the hosts discuss those differences with their guests. 

 

The data also shows that many Black folks are disillusioned with Democrats. Some are drifting toward the right as a result. How can Democrats adjust their strategy to appeal to the (often disillusioned) Black community? President of HIT Strategies Terrance Woodbury has been conducting the polls and has some crucial answers. 

 

AND we have to cover Trump’s recent executive order that gives the federal government more control over voting registration. If it clears legal challenges, the changes will make it more difficult to register to vote, a classic GOP voter suppression strategy. You can see this strategy playing out right now in Georgia…

Hunter Biden was found guilty for marking on an application that he was neither an addict nor a drug abuser on an application for a firearm he owned briefly. He’s facing a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The case calls into question the “wisdom” of our current Attorney General and puts a spotlight on an issue too many of us are familiar with: the criminalization of addiction.  

 

This week Tiffany Cross has just come back from Côte d’Ivoire with stories and insights to share with co-hosts, Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum. Tiffany’s trip made her think: are Black folks in the states always checking what they’re saying, doing—even WEARING—to cater to white folks? 

 

The Supreme Court will make decisions on a number of consequential cases this summer, including access to abortion pills, regulation of social media sites, and whether Trump is immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office. Watch out y’all, the activist court is ready to trash more of our rights.

 

And in Politics Are Everywhere, soccer star Vinícius Júnior conquered racism if even for a moment after three Spanish fans who hurled racist insults at him during a soccer match in 2023 were sentenced to 8 months in prison. It marks the first ever conviction in Spain for racial abuse at a soccer match. Vinícius responds to the conviction on Twitter, “I am a tormentor of racists.”  And we are here for THAT torment!!

And Gov Hochul isn’t the only politician garnering some controversy over racially-charged remarks. We got a reminder last week that some members of Congress are just straight up racist. And so we ask, are there white supremacists in Congress? Spoiler alert: yes, and the hosts will name a few. 

 

In Politics Are Everywhere we examine violence and the ongoing beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Given the drive-by shooting outside Drake’s house, the hosts ask: at what point does beef in hip hop culture go too far?

Trump fires top Black general and installs unqualified loyalists to key positions. The end of DEI and the myth of meritocracy.

 

Four-Star General CQ Brown Jr. was the top military officer, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, until he was fired last Friday by president Trump via a social media post. Apparently Brown was too “woke” for the Trump admin–and he just so happens to be Black. 

 

THREE-Star LIEUTENANT General Dan Caine has been promoted as Brown’s replacement. Now, why is a less qualified (and retired) general being tapped to replace General Brown in this prestigious position? It couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that he’s white, could it?

 

Using examples, like the recent promotion of MAGA podcaster Dan Bongino, Angela Rye exposes the hypocrisy of MAGA when they promote the end of DEI as the return of “meritocracy.” There will be serious consequences to promoting unqualified individuals to positions of power.

Taral Patel was arrested for sending himself fake racist messages on social media, messages that he put together in a collage and shared with his supporters. You can’t make up this NUNSENSE.

 

Speaking of nunsense, the Biden campaign just spent $50 million on a new ad that Angela thinks may have missed the mark. She’ll offer some free advice on how to make an effective ad while Tiffany and Andrew debate if the ads matter at all. 

 

And in more important news, Tiffany catches us up on the most severe war-related humanitarian crisis in the world. No, it’s not Gaza. It’s Sudan, where millions of Sudanese people have been displaced and are at risk of famine. Surprised? Staying in the south, Crystal Mason recently ended her years-long battle with the Texas courts, who sentenced her to prison for FIVE YEARS just for trying to vote. In 2016, she cast a provisional ballot not knowing that it was illegal for her to do so since she was technically still under state supervision. Her life has been consumed by BS (excuse the language) legal battles ever since. 

 

Y’all have been asking and now our hosts answer– what’s up with Project 2025? On this week’s deep dive, we dig into the woke-obsessed 900+ page document that outlines the republican plan to literally remake the federal government in their image. If Trump wins, the plan calls for him to replace tens of thousands of public employees in the FBI, Department of Justice, and more with conservative loyalists. They’re gearing up for war, y’all!

While they’re supporting her now, not all Dems have been with Kamala since the get. Angela has the receipts on which high-ranking Democrats pushed back against Kamala’s nomination, and why. 

 

Meanwhile, the interim president at FAMU has unceremoniously fired much of the university’s leadership a week before school starts. This interim president was hired by appointees of Governor Ron DeSantis, raising questions about the motive behind the firings.
