08 Apr 2017 | Naked Mormon History Travel Log 04-03/04-17 | 00:14:19
Isaac Hale didn't like Jo when him and Emma began courting. Luckily for Jo, Hale's heart softened and allowed Jo to move in to the farm once "persecution" in New York became too much to bear. We cover two days in this travel log because the majority of them were spent driving. The rest of the log includes my musing on an interview I conducted with a professor at Boston University about Joseph Smith's possible entheogen use.
26 Apr 2019 | Ep 152 – Hiding in Plain Sight; Accult | 01:14:15
On this episode, we take a brief foray into the magic world view of early Mormon leaders. From astrology to divination to scrying to palmistry, many early leaders of the church were influenced by the magic that underpins Protestant Christian mysticism. Instead of talking about Joseph Smith and his seer stones, we take a look at other prominent early Mormons to attempt to construct their beliefs systems that primed them for belief in the early church. 27 Sep 2019 | Ep 174 - Legal Polygamy w/ Philippa Meek Pt. 1 | 01:10:09
On this episode, we take a break from our historical timeline to bring you a special guest. Philippa Meek is a research fellow at Exeter University specializing in polygamous religious sects. Part one of our discussion walks us through the controversial and intense history of early Mormon polygamy in Nauvoo and Utah. Then we dive into the legal issues surrounding the Utah Mormons and how the federal government passed numerous acts to specifically target Mormon polygamy, as well as the Mormon response to this increased pressure. Tune in next week to hear about navigating the legal sphere of legalizing polygamy!

26 Jul 2019 | Ep 165 – Stone Rolling Through Fluid Morality | 01:13:12
On this episode, we discuss how fluid Joseph Smith’s morality and theology really was. We begin with his evolving perspective on slavery from pro-slavery to abolitionist when it was politically advantageous. Then we discuss how Mormonism was strictly monogamous to closeted polygamous when possible. Then Jo goes from socialist when he was poor to capitalist when he was filthy rich. A few court cases reveal Jo’s abuse of power and fluid sense of morality. We discuss Finch & Rollosson grocer and the ultimate result of John Finch’s affiliation with the Mormons. 24 Apr 2020 | Ep 204 – Joseph H. Jackson and Nauvoo Bogus | 01:28:18
On this episode, we take the opportunity to examine an enigmatic figure of Nauvoo Mormon history, Joseph H. Jackson. He visited the settlement in late 1842 where he was branded a Missouri spy and a Danite attempted to assassinate him. From that point forward he vowed revenge on the man responsible for nearly taking his life, Joseph Smith. Jackson ingratiated himself into the highest ranks of Nauvoo leadership and even participated in multiple secretive Danite missions to Missouri to break Porter Rockwell out of prison and kidnap two people who were set to testify against Joseph Smith in a Missouri court hearing. Jackson’s chief source of income during 1843-44 was manufacturing bogus coins (counterfeit) and his story is stranger than fiction as he himself stands as a wonderful personification of counterfeit. We discuss his dealings, misdealings, and maneuvers which illustrate a strong sense of self-preservation. Links: Joseph H. On this episode, we’re joined for part 2 of Johnny Stephenson’s interview on Mormon polygamy. Bennett’s expose printed in the Sangamo Journal, and later History of the Saints, altered Mormon polygamy from that time forward. Johnny walks us through how the expose affected the doctrine of polygamy and gives us a few insights into the real-world impact of practicing celestial marriage using first-hand accounts. 10 Apr 2015 | Ep 15 - Manuscript Found by Sidney Rigdon | 01:30:15
On this episode, we take a look at the Spalding theory as the source text for the Book of Mormon. The Spalding theory has been stuck in the margins of Mormon history for quite some time. Well, we try to rip it out of the margins, and into the spotlight for critical examination, and a fair trial in the court of historical possibilities. There's a lot of information to cover, and a lot of conjecture to answer to, but the evidence seems to be there, to support the claims of the theory. Does it seem plausible to you?

06 Jul 2018 | Ep 110 – King Me! | 01:04:17
On this episode, Joseph Smith introduces the endowment ceremony and forms the Quorum of the Anointed, or the Holy Order. Jo had been practicing esoteric rites from his earliest days in Kirtland, but this was the codification of the ceremony which would come to be practiced in every Mormon temple after Smith’s death. We read through one of the earliest available exposes created to reveal the terrifying theocratic rituals embodied by Jo and the elite Mormons who went through this occult initiation. On this episode, we finally reach the conclusion of our 3-part deconstruction of Mark Hofmann. From young missionary to old man in prison, this has been one wild ride with Mark from his birth in 1954, through his days forging documents throughout his 20’s and finally ending at his plea bargain at the age of 32. This episode even features a surprise interview from an unexpected guest with a funny voice.

Mostly a driving day, but I had to stop at Carthage Jail on the way to Missouri. Nothing in the world fires me up like revisionist history and Carthage Jail reeks of it. Luckily, if you know the right questions to ask, the missionaries there have to answer truthfully, despite the believing Mormons sighing in the background at the pursuit for truth.
28 Feb 2020 | Ep 196 – Joseph Smith Assassination Plot | 01:10:28
On this episode, we examine the times around General Conference of April 1844. Yes, the King Follett Discourse had been given, among many other interesting talks, but what was going on that may have contributed to it falling out of grand recognition we give it today? We examine the concomitant events of scandal after scandal burning the emptying fuel of the outrage machine. The Higbees, Fosters, and Laws create some problems for the prophet, most notably, they devise an assassination plot for Joseph Smith. Another man, Augustine Spencer, refused arrest by the city marshal, John P. Greene, and Charles A. Foster, one of the conspirators, draws a pistol on Joseph in broad daylight. With everything going on, it’s no wonder the King Follett Discourse wasn’t more noticed at the time it was given. Links: Do you want a Mormon D&D Campaign?! 19 Jul 2019 | Ep 164 – Blade, Nor Bullet, Nor Poison Can Harm Them | 01:08:18
On this episode, we start with discussing whether or not Emma Smith poisoned Joseph Smith. If she didn’t, who did? If it wasn’t poison, what could it have been? Is there enough evidence to conclude that Emma attempted to kill her first husband? After that we discuss the Christmas party of 1843 at the Nauvoo Mansion when a drunk, Missouri-lookin’ guy comes in and crashes the party. Joseph Smith gives a revelation that came true: “I prophesy, in the name of the Lord, that you—Orrin Porter Rockwell—so long as ye shall remain loyal and true to thy faith, need fear no enemy. 16 Oct 2015 | Ep 24 – Joe's New Sidekick | 02:47:46
On this episode, we cover a lot of ground. We start out in late October 1830, and follow the missionary force from Fayette, New York, to Jackson County, Missouri. They make one meaningful stop along the way, and set in motion the mechanism to keep the church alive. Of course, Joe stayed plenty busy on his own in New York. He even makes a new friend, or connects with an old one, and everything gets thrown into high gear. The episode ends with trying to figure out some Mormon doctrine from the Pearl of Great Price. TLDR: God is a stupid dick, and Enoch was the best magician in the world.

10 Jun 2016 | Ep 34 – Kirtland Temple Hallucication | 02:26:07
On this episode, we start off with a discussion about the history of Mormon temples. This launches us into a discussion about the resources necessary to build such a structure, as well as how they paid for by the church. After that we discuss 6 pages in the History of the Church that sound balls to the walls crazy, I wonder what was in that anointing oil. This leads us into a question about a bigger Mormon history issue, is there a naturalistic explanation for the miraculous angel and dead prophet sightings of the Kirtland Temple dedication ceremony? The episode concludes with a discussion about Ollie and Joe’s friendship, as well as the overarching problem with Mormon Temples. Show links:

On this episode, we talk about the Fosters, Robert D. and Charles A. Who are they? Why are they important? What did they do? Charles Foster, unfortunately, is a rather obscure historical figure. His brother Robert, however, figures prominently in the Mormon kingdom of Nauvoo from its inception. We talk about the growing divide between Joseph Smith and Robert D. 30 Jan 2019 | Ep 139 – A City of Glass Houses | 01:31:12
On this episode, Jo was safe for a little while. It was time for the 1843 elections which returned predictable results. Jo elevates the Nauvoo House to the importance of the Nauvoo Temple, but then derides people for aggrandizing themselves. A market center is planned and Jo is given final decision-making power as Mayor. Then Jo goes to the Temple construction site and makes a speech that reveals some interesting details of his character. After that we get a great update on Brother Jake, and then take a turn into somber territory to say goodbye to a dear friend, Deborah “Heretic Woman” Mc Taggart. On this episode, we cover the History of the Church recounting of Sylvester Smith v. Joseph Smith. A couple of month's long journey had riled up some unfriendly feelings between Sylvester and Joe, but luckily, Joe wasn't in the wrong for any situation, and everything was Sylvester's fault. After that we talk about organizing the quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and finish out with a discussion about the 1835 version of the First Vision account.

Martin's Cove was something that cropped up on my radar mere days before passing it by. The Martin handcart company was forced to camp for 5 days in a small horseshoe cove that offered a brief respite from the brutal southern Wyoming blizzards which would forced them to wait out the storm. The missionaries called it hallowed ground, I call it a gigantic fuck up that cost a lot of people everything they had, including their lives.
17 Jul 2015 | Ep 20 – Joe the Ignoramus, and the Book of Pukei | 01:46:38
On this episode, we talk about the interrum period from when Joe and Marty signed the contract with E.B. Grandin to publish the Book of Mormon, until the book is published in March 1830. A lot happens, and Joe starts to really gain a reputation for himself, with both dissenters, and supporters of his cause. Joe also gives some revelations about a quick $205,000 that prove to be laughably false.

20 Oct 2017 | Ep 73 – Heber Kimball Visionary Polygamist | 01:30:10
On this episode, we finally introduce someone who’s been long overdue for our historical timeline, Heber C. Kimball, maybe you guys can help me come up with a fitting NaMo nickname for him. After that we jump into a letter Bennett wrote to the brethren to be published in the Times and Season stating the Nauvoo Charter had finally passed the Illinois State Legislature. Bennett was a powerful lobbyist and ally to have on the Mormons’ side, and he specifically called out a few government officials who were paramount to the Charter’s success. Then we find out that God gave a sign in the heavens to the Mormon missionaries in England, signaling the passing of the Nauvoo Charter, legends are born easily but never die. On this episode, we take the opportunity to have a conversation with an armchair Mormon historian known as the host of Year of Polygamy and Color of Heaven podcasts, Lindsay Park. Lindsay has made a livelihood from communicating Mormon history, and strives daily to actively open roads of discussion between believers and ex-Mo’s which typically remain less travelled. She now works as assistant director of the Sunstone Foundation to bring Symposiums to the world. We talk about her work and the ways she’s been successful in communicating Mormon history to her believing loved ones. From there we go on to discuss the history of polygamy and how it affected the Church since 1831. Was Joseph’s polygamy all a fabrication by Bloody Brigham Young?

On this episode, we finally dive into polygamy. We’re ramping up for polygamy in Nauvoo prior to April 1841, but before doing so we have to set the historical stage to understand the world from which Mormon polygamy evolved. We begin with marriage from the dawn of historical time and skim across the top of major world religions throughout most of written history to finally arrive at the post-enlightenment western world filled with small groups of free-love proto-hippies. Spalding’s wife, Matilda Davison, and Hingepin Sidney Rigdon went at it in a public letter exchange where she laid out the theory claiming the Book of Mormon came from her late husband’s fiction and Rigdon responds with ad hominem attacks and blatant lies. On this episode, Dr. Quinn picks up right where we left off in part 1. Mike tells us about his disagreements with the general direction of BYU Mormon History academia. New Mormon History is born as the Church Historian's Archives are opened and a new influx of independent researchers get their eyes on crucial previously-censored documents. Mark Hoffman shaped the realm of Mormon history while the feminizing of the academic field begins to gain serious traction. Quinn publishes articles and reviews in support of the scholarship coming from women's groups concerning women holding the priesthood and then writes his seminal Early Mormonism and the Magic World View. He tenders his resignation then goes into hiding from church authority to evade excommunication. Finally, Women and Authority is published which was plutonium to many scholars who were somehow involved, including Quinn. 5 excommunications and 1 disfellowshipping go down in infamy as the "September Six". 09 Sep 2016 | Ep 38 – Nigh Pandemonium of 1837 | 01:41:01
On this episode, we begin with the Panic of 1837 and how it affected Mormon history. The world economy was in the early stages of a deep depression that lasted for more than half a decade. Monetary strains really begin to take their toll on everybody with money from the Kirtland Safety Society company as rapid inflation drives up their total portfolio to nearly $4 million. The real infighting begins as conflicting complaints are filed, and P-cubed (Parley P. Pratt) preaches a sermon about the decline of the church and lies coming from the leadership. D-Day David Whitmer, John Goebbels Whitmer, along with Ollie Cowdung (Oliver Cowdery) and Not-So-Smarty-Martin Harris are all considered to be in transgression and need to be straightened out. Never has dissent and blasphemy run so rampant through the quiet streets of Kirtland, Ohio. We finish up with a detail I didn’t originally perceive concerning the 1836 treasure digging trip to Salem, Massachusetts as well as some speculation on the human behind the historical Joseph Smith.

09 Aug 2019 | Ep 167 – The Next Mormons with Jana Riess and Benjamin Knoll | 01:43:50
On this episode, we take a break from our historical timeline to bring you a very exciting interview with Jana Riess and Benjamin Knoll. Jana Riess is the author of the book “The Next Mormons” and Benjamin Knoll is the data scientist who helped create the survey an interpret the data which underlies the book. We discuss a chapter-by-chapter Q&A about the book and explore ways to interpret the data, as well as how it was interpreted for publication in the book itself. On a personal note, this book comes very highly recommended and if you’ve heard anything about the book I can almost guarantee it’s been a good review because The Next Mormons is one of the most important books of the 2010s. It’s my sincere hope that after listening to this interview you get a copy for yourself. Enjoy! 03 Mar 2017 | Ep 49 – Profit of High Treason | 01:34:19
On this episode, shock and awe is an effective strategy. In the wake of the Haun’s Mill massacre, the Jo and the Mormon leadership are given a final ultimatum, surrender or the twin cities (Far West & Adam-ondi-Ahman) fall and the Mormons fall with them. General Lucas of the Missouri militia dictates four stipulations of surrender as the Mormons are outnumbered 5 to 1 and surrounded. Mormon Colonel George Hinkle negotiates an extension for the night but Jo and the leaders are taken as hostage to force compliance to surrender. The twin sanctuary cities are violated and the national media explodes with rumors and fake news.

On this episode, we begin a 3-part deconstruction of the Book of Abraham. We begin with the cultural realm captivated by Egyptian Antiquities with Napoleon’s discoveries and how such discoveries influenced minds in 19th-century America. We trace collections of papyri and artifacts being studied and exhibited all over the country right in Joseph Smith’s back yard. We briefly cover how the Church acquired the Egyptian Antiquities collection of mummies and papyri which later became the Book of Abraham as well as the translation process. After that we continue to follow the line of possession of the collection and how it came into the possession of the Brighamite LDS Church in November of 1967. After that we have on Jake Farr-Wharton of iFriends to talk about a recent article from the Sidney Morning Herald covering the Protect LDS Children campaign. Jake is followed by a brief “Angel’s Trumpet” segment about a recent headline from Mormon-newsroom.org telling of the Church’s apology for institutionalized and doctrinal racism. On this episode, we invite an actual Mormon historian to offer context and perspective on the timeline. John Hamer grew up in the church but eventually came to join the Community of Christ. He’s been studying Mormon history for decades, abundantly evident when listening to any podcast he’s featured on, and we simply can’t ask him enough questions. We cover in detail the transition time from Kirtland to Far West in 1837-38 as well as the social pressures existing between the Mormons and the Missourians. We end with a big discussion of the schism crisis after Jo’s death with some of the largest break-off sects (Strangite, Cutlerite, Rigdonite, Parrishite, etc.), then finish with the reorganization that gave the RLDS church its name. We restrained ourselves to 2 hours of talking for everybody’s sake, but there are no promises we’ll keep to the same restriction next time John’s on the show!

On this episode, the Nauvoo City Council spends all day 10 June 1844 deliberating about how to deal with the Nauvoo Expositor. The push through the council a new ordinance concerning libelous publications then spend the rest of the day discussing whether or not the Expositor should be declared a “public nuisance,” and therefore necessary to remove. They side with Joseph Smith in his calls for vote in favor and the marshal, John P. Greene, obeys the Mayor’s orders and destroys the printing press and ransack the office. The Nauvoo Legion were also called to assist the marshal and martial law is declared by the prophet, priest, king, lieutenant-general, and presidential candidate, Joseph Smith. These are all questions we’ll answer by the end of the episode today. This is a story that’s been told a hundred times and they all end the same way. We spend a lot of time going through the Expositor from top to bottom and teasing out subtle points and lessons made in the garnish of the paper. Then Jo and friends are charged again in a Grand Jury with everything they’d already been charged, then proceed to escape during a transfer to Boone County. Don has been researching this topic for the last 15 years and writing about it for the last 2; now his research is compiled into his book “The Lost 116 Pages”. What can we know about a manuscript which as been lost for nearly 2 centuries? What sources has Don used to inform his speculation of the contents of that manuscript? What missing puzzle pieces of the Book of Mormon could be filled by the manuscript? Find out the answer to hardly any of these questions by listening to our discussion, but find out the answer to all of these questions by purchasing his book! On this episode, Joseph Smith again heads to the courts charged with riot along with 17 other Mormon elites. Whether or not this Nauvoo Municipal Court hearing would carry any weight would forecast the actions of the Mormon leadership following it. None of the victims of the crime (destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor printing press) were allowed to testify, insuring this was a kangaroo court which began the trial with the conclusion already in mind. After the hearing Jo spends the rest of the day issuing orders and writing or receiving letters while his bois took affidavits about the movements of the anti-Mormons in the surrounding settlements. Jo intercepts a message stating the dissenters were planning on destroying the press of the Nauvoo Neighbor that night and he sets the Nauvoo Legion out on an overnight guard of his home and the Neighbor printing office. 06 Jan 2017 | Ep 45 – Militant Seekers of Truth | 01:54:27
On this episode, the duration of our discussion lands us in September and early October of 1838. We start with brief introductions to Generals Alexander Doniphan and David Atchison; two non-Mormon allies the Mormons desperately needed when it seemed everybody in Missouri wanted them dead or gone. Jo and Lyman Wight retained these generals for legal counsel prior to a ceremonial preliminary trial held to charge Jo and Wight with mob violence. Rumors were also circulating that the Mormons were trying to ally themselves with the Native Americans to attempt an overthrow of the Missourian Government. Rumors don’t need to be founded in reality to scare the shit out of the public. Diahmen comes under siege from Dr. W. W. Austin’s troops after the Mormons steal a convoy of arms and take three prisoners. After a buy-out of the non-Mormons in Daviess County is negotiated, these anti-Mormon vigilantes lay siege on DeWitt and force its surrender nearly 2 weeks later. Mormons are chased out of their homes with many dying from exposure and illness. Jo had to do something to keep his people from starving…

We discuss what this Mormon revolution would look like, the contrived theological boundaries which justified it, and the deliberate steps taken to carry it out. From the Book of Mormon to the Council of Fifty, Jo sought to capitalize off the plight of slaves and the oppression of Native Americans. 27 Oct 2017 | Ep 74 – Foster Pulls a Pistol on Joseph Smith | 01:37:17
On this week’s episode, we read through a bunch of the first revelation Joseph Smith gave in Nauvoo that made it into the D&C, section 124. Since the passing of the Nauvoo Charter, the Mormons could finally rest easy that they wouldn’t be chased out of Illinois after living there a year like had happened in Missouri, so they set up camp. By that, I mean, Jo gave a revelation dictating the organization of Nauvoo to build it up, starting with the most important parts, like building a house for Jo and his family. Section 124 has a bunch of important names in it so we review most of the names and why they’re relevant as we move through the revelation. After that, Nauvoo holds its first election in February of 1840, electing John Wreck-it Bennett to the office of Mayor and various church elites to the offices of aldermen and councilors. Jo finally had a legally sanctioned theocracy with no looming threat of a Missouri militia to come and take it away like 2 years ago. 04 May 2018 | Ep 101 – For the Relief of Nauvoo Society plus Kate Kelly | 01:42:54
On this episode, the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo is finally established. We walk through the set and setting of Nauvoo in early 1842 being built on nothing more than credit. Men are the providers, while women are tasked with home chores, raising children, and maybe doing a small money-making hobby on the side to keep the house afloat. We discuss women’s roles in 19th-century America and how early feminism caused small movements to rise long before the official beginning of the Women’s Era. We read through the meeting minutes of the foundation of the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo when Emma Hale Smith was elected President. We speculate on Joseph’s intentions when it was first organized and opine on how stagnant and solidified Mormon doctrine today is in comparison to Nauvoo Mormonism of 1842. What does it take to change Mormon doctrine today? We invite on Kate Kelly to discuss her history with the Ordain Women movement.

We begin with a number of people getting sick in Nauvoo, then discuss the various meetings held to carry out the bankruptcy proceedings of prominent Nauvoo Mormons and all the drama with “lost” letters. Then we get into what the newly-elected representatives of Illinois had planned to attempt curtailing the political power and corruption in Nauvoo. William Smith opposes. After that, we go on a lightning round to finish out 1842 so we can begin 1843 in 2019 with a clean slate. On this episode, we invite on Tom and Cecil of the Cognitive Dissonance podcast to talk about the worst presidential candidate in American History, Joseph Smith. From New York to Illinois, everything Jo touched fell into a state of chaos and ruin. By the time we get to his 1844 presidential campaign, he’s won and lost dozens of business ventures, built and dissolved a handful of newspapers, and fully established his Mormon theocracy on the Mississippi. 25 Dec 2015 | SpEdEp 15 – War of 1812 Discussion with Tim and Clara Keyt | 02:59:22
On this episode, we have a very enlightening conversation with two historians about the war of 1812. Transoceanic civil wars, back-stabbings by warring Indian tribes, impressment of sailors, and reportedly invincible armies are some of the topics of discussion. A leader emerges that Joe could have spent hours fantasizing about. How does this war effect Joe, and did he use some of the 1812 circumstances in his own Book of Mormon? Listen and decide for yourself.

11 May 2018 | Ep 102 – Mother’s Day, The Virtues of Our Legacy | 01:08:04
On this episode, we take the opportunity of Mother’s Day to examine the life and struggles of some of the most prominent mothers throughout Mormon history. From Lucy Mack Smith caring for her children in ill health, to Mother Elizabeth Ann Whitney providing a home for Joseph and Emma when they first arrived in Kirtland, Ohio, and well beyond to the women who provided the caretaking, medicine, midwifery, and social structure to build each of the Mormon kingdoms. The actors may get the awards, but everybody else actually making the show run on the back end are often relegated to the footnotes section. Let’s bring them to life again. After that, we have on J.R. Becker with his new children’s book about the skeptical side of death. How do we have these tough conversations with our children when they inevitably arise? J.R. shares some of his personal experience and inspiration which led to his writing the Annabelle & Aiden series. Links:

On this episode, we air an interview conducted at Boston University’s theological department during the Mormon history tour. We get to hear from Professor Emeritus Carl A.P. Ruck of classical history. Ruck has been publishing in the field for 3 decades and sits as one of the foremost historians who has extensively researched certain religious rituals and their use of entheogens. He gives his opinion on whether it’s feasible for Joseph Smith to have used them in the early days of Mormonism. After the conversation, we dive into a discussion about what attendees can expect during this year’s Sunstone Symposium presentation on July 29th, “Revelation Through Hallucination”. Marie Kent, host of My Book of Mormon podcast, will be in SLC for Sunstone as well; we’ll be doing a live show from Squatter’s pub. Check both Facebook pages for more info! Links: Carl A.P. On this episode, we invite on amateur Mycologist Cody Noconi to discuss the history of entheogen use in the human race. Much of the information has been well substantiated by multiple historians and Cody has merely compiled it and brought it to the listening audience. We cover human history from the Fertile Crescent all the way to the enlightenment period, maybe we’ve been stoners for longer than historians think. Once we get into Hermeticism and Alchemy, the connections to entheogen use starts to become very powerful, to the point we can’t ignore its influence. Please take this as a jumping off point to engage in researching this topic for yourself.

On this episode, we invite Sam Young of the Protect LDS Children campaign. Currently, Sam’s petition has over 16,000 signatures urging the LDS Church to change its policy concerning how Bishop’s interviews are conducted. As it currently stands, Bishops frequently ask sexually explicit questions during regular interviews in a child’s development, one-on-one, behind closed doors, perpetuating a cycle of shame and creating situations where sexual grooming is normalized. March 30, 2018 marks the public march to the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City to deliver the petition to the Church along with collected stories from people who’ve been affected by these invasive interviews. Please consider joining us in this grassroots movement, whether you simply sign the petition, share your personal story, or you’re able to make it to the march, Sam needs our support. 15 Sep 2017 | Ep 68 – Motivations of a Broken Mind | 01:32:50
On this episode, we jump right in to adding an incredible well of depth to the character of Joseph Smith by reading a number of excerpts from William Morain’s “The Sword of Laban, Joseph Smith and the Dissociated Mind”. The excruciating pain from his childhood leg surgery coupled with the death of his eldest brother in his late teens had significant impacts on Jo’s psyche, baggage he would carry for the rest of his life. Maybe we can understand the inner-workings of a broken mind by viewing decisions Jo made through child’s eyes. Jo calls the Quorum of the Twelve home from their mission in England but permits Parley P. Pratt (P-cubed) to tarry a bit longer to continue his publishing duties with the Liverpool Book of Mormon and the Millennial Star. The economic outlook for Nauvoo looked good on the surface at the end of 1840, but the whole thing was built on credit and there was a jobs vacuum affecting every Mormon who chose to settle roundabout. After that we invite recurring correspondent, Ryan McKnight, for a Mormon Leaks Minute before dealing with some listener feedback. 22 May 2020 | Ep 208 – A Fateful Crossing of the Mississippi | 01:42:31
On this episode, tensions are REALLY high between the Mormons and anti-Mormons in Nauvoo and Carthage respectively. We begin with John Taylor telling us about his meeting with Governor Thomas Ford about the Mormon side of the conflict. Because Ford was surrounded by enemies of the church as Taylor was telling the story, with affidavits included, the men scarcely let Taylor get a word out without calling what he said a “God damned lie”. Taylor returns to Nauvoo carrying Ford’s letter to Joseph Smith, which told Jo to surrender to arrest or the militia would be in Nauvoo before nightfall. Jo resolves to run away with his brother, Hyrum, and his closest advisor, Willard Richards, along with his hitman, Porter Rockwell. They cross the Mississippi under the cover of night and reach the home of a Mormon outside Nauvoo where they make camp for their journey to the “Great Basin” beyond the “Rocky Mountains”. The arresting posse of 30 men arrive in Nauvoo that morning to arrest Joseph and Hyrum, only to return to Carthage empty-handed, forcing Governor Ford’s hand to call the militia into Nauvoo to search for the fugitives. On this episode, we cover the major sprouts of Mormonism which sprang from the fertile religion Nauvoo soil. From the Strangites, to Whiteites, to Josephites, to Brighamites, to Godbeites, and back to Brighamites again, every major faction of Mormonism seems to have a highly polarized stance on polygamy. Politics plays it’s role as laws are passed in attempt to outlaw the twins of barbarism, slavery and polygamy, largely aimed at curtailing the religious overreach of the Mormon theocracy in Utah. On this episode, we examine the immediate impact and fallout of the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor. The media throughout Illinois explodes at the overt act of Mormon tyranny and fascism. Joseph Smith is arrested by a constable from Carthage on a warrant issued by a judge from Carthage, but he dodges a hearing at the Carthage courthouse by holding his own kangaroo court hearing in Nauvoo. He exchanges letters among various church leaders all over Illinois. Meanwhile, the anti-Mormons in Carthage and Warsaw hold various meetings in reaction to every development in Nauvoo and pass resolutions in response. A “war of extermination” is inevitable and imminent. 20 Mar 2020 | Ep 199 – Lawful Dissent | 01:26:05
On this episode, we discuss the Law family. William, his wife Jane, and his brother Wilson, converted to the church in the mid-1830s and moved to the burgeoning city of Nauvoo in 1839. From that point forward, William and Jane were elevated to high-ranking levels of Mormon and city leadership. Joseph Smith and William Law became good friends and coworkers in Nauvoo government and military duties. But, something changed. By late 1843, William began to bristle about how much political influence Joseph Smith was gaining. By January of 1844, William was dropped from the Presidency of the church (Jo’s left-hand man). William, Jane, and Wilson Law eventually became looped together with the dissenter movement within the kingdom. They finally chose to act and formed their own sect of Mormonism in Nauvoo, collected affidavits of those wronged by the Nauvoo leadership and Joseph Smith, and established an adversarial printing press. The Higbees, the Fosters, and the Laws establishing this rival church and expose printing press would catalyze a sequence of events which would lead to the deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. 31 Jan 2020 | Ep 192 – Called and Numbered with the Chosen | 01:08:08
On this episode, propaganda flies all directions about the Mormons. A New York Tribune article from January 1844 made waves across the nation with some vicious claims about the Mormon empire in Nauvoo. The article was picked up and reprinted in many news outlets, especially in the cities neighboring Nauvoo. In answer to this, the Quincy Whig received pushback from Mormons for publishing the Tribune article, but the Whig made a commitment to journalistic integrity. A Mormon wrote a letter to the editor of the Whig which they indulged him by publishing it. After all of this, Hyrum Sidekick-Abiff Smith, in the midst of a legal dispute over polygamy and slander, published an article in the Times and Seasons which carved out a future of Mormonism that openly practiced polygamy. 27 Dec 2019 | Ep 187 – The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis pt.2 | 01:23:30
On this episode, we continue reading through our recently published article in the Journal of Psychedelics Studies titled “The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis”. In this segment of the paper, we discuss many candidate entheogens Joseph Smith may have employed in the early church as well as the symptomology commonly associated with these various candidates. Also discussed is Luman Walters, an occult mentor of Joseph Smith in the 1820s. We utilize the information established in the candidate psychedelics section to inform a discussion of the first-vision experience in the early 1820s. An entheogenic-lens offers an interesting view into certain passages in the Book of Mormon including multiple instances of death and rebirth symbology, easily interpreted as the common experience of ego-dissolution when using entheogens. Further, the therapeutic effects of mitigating PTSD and depression symptoms may have provided a unique allure to these plant medicines by Joseph, the entire Smith family, and the early Mormons. 21 Feb 2020 | Ep 195 – King Follett Discourse pt. 3 A Legend that Never Dies | 01:44:57
On this episode, now that we know the man behind the discourse, let’s finally discuss the King Follett Discourse. This is widely known as one of Joseph Smith’s greatest theological sermons culminating 14 years of an evolving and expanding doctrine. From the days of early Mormonism, based on the Book of Mormon and basic Protestant tenets, Joseph Smith had vacuumed up and acquired many fields of philosophy and religious studies and harmonized them with his own. The King Follett Discourse articulated the deepest points of his latest version of Mormon doctrine and taught mysteries which we kept secret from most by 1844. The long-term impact of this discourse has set Mormon doctrine into a class of its own and generated decades of speculative theology from generations of Mormon scholars and historians.
