03 Apr 2022NAAFI Break with the Military Wives Choirs - Sing Share Support00:57:07

The Military Wives Choirs is a registered charity and network of 75 choirs in British military bases across the UK and overseas, bringing women in the military community closer together through singing. With over 2,200 members, the MWC network is tri-service  and any woman with a military connection can join including those currently serving, veterans, mothers, sisters and daughters, empowering women from across the military community. The organisation is also a subsidiary charity of SSAFA.

The first choir held their first rehearsal in April 2010 in Catterick Garrison. It was the idea of two Scots Guards wives who decided, whilst their husbands were deployed in Afghanistan in 2009, to put up posters at the Garrison to actively encourage and look for women interested in singing together, to help support and give the wives a focus whilst their husbands deployed. They engaged a well-known local music teacher and set about putting together a choir made up of wives, girlfriends and servicewomen and so the first choir was formed. A letter was written to choirmaster Gareth Malone looking for help and support with the choir; at that time he was receiving acclaim for his BBC television programme The Choir and felt that this was an idea that could be replicated.

We are back from a Summer recess, with a thought provoking conversation with Mike James, RAF Veteran and former PTI, who has established his own business, in his own words, based on his ‘Gut feeling’.

It was a surprise that our conversation leaned toward the ability to learn how to deal with suddenly having’lottery’ type money.

Listen to how two former RAF PTIs delve into the challenges of post military Self Employment and how to build a following on Social Media.m

11 Sep 2022NAAFI Break With Stu Waddington - Self Employed or Business00:53:01

This weeks guest is former RAF PTI and founder of STAR Development UK Stuart Waddington, who was my interviewer for the 1yr episode of NAAFI Break, so I was delighted to have him back to discuss the journey and his business experiences.

An area of career choice that is overlooked by many Service Leavers is Self Employment, but the difference of setting up a business vs Self Employment is not always obvious.

Great insights, real lived experience and a little PTI humour.

Please share to anyone with a Forces connection who wants to know more about the Military to Veteran transition.

Bio

Founder of Star Development UK, and host of the “#Leadership – What’s on your Mind?” Podcast, Stuart Waddington delivers leadership and transformational development programmes and one-to-one coaching to high performing teams, individuals, senior managers, CEO’s and other top performers.

With a strong background in sports that saw him earn a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science, Stuart’s interest in high performance and the links between body and mind extend beyond the playing field into the business world and other key areas of life. He continues his mindset coaching and mentoring work with sports teams and elite athletes; but offers his guidance and experience to all seeking to excel. A natural people person, Stuart uses his experience to identify and overcome issues that are preventing people and teams achieving their full potential in any discipline.

Stuart left the RAF in 2018 having served 12 years delivering leadership training and physical training to basic trainees, instructors, senior officers and specialist teams across all three of the Armed Forces. He founded Star Development UK to apply his military experience to civilian situations.

To build on his experience outside of his “military bubble”, he embarked on a successful collaboration with the University of Cumbria, teaching life skills to students on the cusp of entering the working world. He also engaged with owners of growing businesses who found themselves seeking guidance with the unfamiliar demands of team leadership. He also worked as an associate delivering development training programmes to management teams within multiple government departments.

25 Sep 2022NAAFI Break with Kris Milne- More than just a Corporal00:40:48

I often get asked about my day job and what the connection is to NAAFI a break. Well it’s hard to separate in some ways, as the goal of the NAAFI Break was to shine a light on positive lived experience of the military to Veteran transition and at JobOppO we are always trying to bring the lived experience of Veterans in the ‘Changing Gear’ to our OppOs. We talk to those who have successfully managed themselves and others in the 'Changing Gear' and explore the issues that arise and how to negotiate them.

So this episode was one I recorded for JobOppo, but I felt it was too good not to share to the wider audience via NAAFI Break.
In this episode I speak to Kris Milne, Australian Army Veteran  and champion of Veteran causes, throughout his post military career and about changing the perception of 'being just a Corporal' by the individual themselves and Employers.

A great conversation, thought provoking, honest and insightful.

You can find this episode and more great guests in JobOppo House App and on our Website Resources.

02 Oct 2022NAAFI Break with Roxanne Brind00:46:39

In this episode I peak to Roxanne Brind, RLC Army Veteran about joining a family, where the MIlitary Wives took on the role of surrogate mother to the young single soldiers on base in Germany and how that feeling of family was hard to find on leaving the Army.
We discuss the changing of priorities and trying to settle her children in one area.

Roxanne articulates really well the challenges of recognising her own value in the next phase of her career.

09 Oct 2022NAAFI Break with Will Stone - Standing up & serving his local Community00:40:29

When I started NAAFI Break, it was always to speak to the 'Above Average Joe's' (my definition)  who go about their business, achieve success and help others in the Military to Veteran transition. I am always drawn to the stories of those who have decided to 'Give Back' and what the difference is between those who move forward and upwards, versus those who struggle and become angry about their Military career,  due to a lack of progress or promotion. The attitudes and mindset shift is fascinating to me.

What is it that drives us to make changes and lead to a successful transition?

Will Stone brings, gritty, honest and energetic insight to the NAAFI Break.

23 Oct 2022NAAFI Break with Paul Breen - Never more than 8 feet from a Veteran!00:47:23

A chance meeting, taking the rise out of each other within 60 seconds, it’s almost a sport, but in reality it’s the mutual respect between Veterans. So when I first met Paul Breen at the inaugural Berkeley Marathon UK, it was a typical Army to RAF conversation.

Here is an Army Veteran, Kings Royal Hussars, who has faced the challenges around transition which initially took him on a downward spiral. His marriage suffered and his own health and well-being too. However his Army career gave him the resilience to make changes and say to himself ‘ I got through that, I can get through this’

Resilience
Adapatability
Willingness to get the job done
Can do attitude

A great insight into the reality for many Veterans when they leave behind a whole being existence and start a new career.

30 Oct 2022NAAFI Break with Tom Rose - When you need a back up plan,00:48:06

100 episodes after Andrew Rose, former RAF PTI and colleague appeared on the opening episode of the NAAFI Break podcast, episode 101 brings his son Tom Rose onto talk about facing the premature end to a budding professional football career.

The pathway to be a property and investment business is a squiggly one, but the resilience and willingness to make sacrifices is very similar to those leaving the Military.

Tom gives his memory of being a forces kid, moving, settling and being independent away from home, before his future career was abruptly ended.

His work with footballers and high net worth clients has some lessons for Service Leavers and Veterans when it comes to handling finances!

Some great lessons and advice for our Community.

06 Nov 2022NAAFI Break with Ellen Plumer - Of course I learnt to drink port!00:35:56

Ellen Plumer, enjoyed career success, the highs and the rewards, but gave it up and went travelling. On returning to the Uk took a job in the 3rd Sector as a stop gap. Almost 20 years later she is Head of Employer Services and Partnerships at Ben Automotive Industry Charity and a Trustee of Scottys Little Soldiers the charity for bereaved military children and young people.

We chatted about the parallels between military skills and those needed in the 3rd Sector and the work as a Trustee for Scottys Little Soldiers, that we are both part of.

Could your next role be in the 3rd Sector after the Military?

20 Nov 2022NAAFI BREAK- 100 lessons shared, 100 experiences of the Transition from Military to Veteran00:24:15

It seems like a milestone to reflect on and summarise what has been shared on the NAAFI Break podcast so far.
The original aim was to shine a light on the transition from the Military into a successful second career, this still remains the purpose. The guests and topics covered, have taken me to uncover some fantastic insights and life stories, that highlight the impact on the person, their families and showcase the incredible skills and traits our Service Leavers and Veterans have.

I also signpost new listeners to past episodes and themes that stand out, although every episode and guest has added valuable stories to the mix.

I have used this episode to pose some questions and thought provoking ideas, to you the listener. What I really want to get in return are your thoughts and reflection of your own situation and Transition journey. Please leave a comment or email me directly dominic@joboppo.co.uk.

27 Nov 2022NAAFI Break with Rach Williamson - I AM (INVICTUS)00:39:07

Nature or nurture? When it comes to resilience and adaptability, some people develop the traits early in life. If we all had an easy life there would be no need to be resilient?

Rach Wiliamson, is an RAF Veteran, who before joining had to shift her energies into a different pathway after her Olympic dream disappeared, joining the RAF to 'see what would happen'.

Another setback, another layer of resilience and change required,  with retraining to a new trade due to a training injury early in her RAF career. we discuss the journey through career change, overcoming adversity and always bouncing back.

The journey so far, is impressive to say the least:
RAF Representative Rugby, Invictus Games Gold Medallist, Invictus Team UK Captain, Help for Heroes Ambassador, Recover Support Officer Royal British Legion, Role Model.
Of all my guests, this is a fantastic insight into setting goals, moving forward and finding a new purpose.

04 Dec 2022NAAFI Break with Matt Simmons - A Good Apple00:39:31

For the first time I have invited a previous guest back to the NAAFI Break podcast. A year ago I came across a Veteran who was stirred to action by the Afghan Refugee crisis and he decided to do more than make an online donation to help. So began EMS4Afghans and a year of serving again. With the momentum building, global events created an extension to the original cause and Bridge to Unity was formed to support the Ukrainian situation.
Matt Simmons has had time to reflect on his post RAF career and has come to some clear conclusions. I felt I had to uncover more from him and share the story.

Please like follow and share to anyone with a Forces connection.

11 Dec 2022NAAFI Break with Craig Monaghan - Comfortable in chaos00:42:40

Founder of The Spearhead Foundation former Rifleman Craig and I first met on a rugby pitch 10 years ago. I had no idea of the personal journey he was on from his medical discharge from the Army following injuries sustained in Afghanistan.

The experience of that day and his journey since are great insight into the mindset and attitude he has. In his word he feels normal when surrounded by chaos. Success after service is relative and varied, but talking to Craig and charting his achievements to date are, in my mind an indicator of success.

Personal growth and self awareness are a regular theme in the guests we speak to, this episode emphasized this further.

18 Dec 2022NAAFI Break with Sean Foley The EQCommando - A moment on a ridge00:57:32

Sean Foley, is the EQCommando. A former Royal Marine, he has crafted a career, launched off the back of a moment of stark realisation on a ridge in Kuwait.
His journey hasn’t been linear, more of a squiggly one, but he walks his own talk. He is comfortable in his own skin.

There are moments of honesty and the guts of   what’s behind his outlook, that will resonate with others, but importantly it’s his lived experience and honesty as he reflects that is of most value to Veterans and Service Leavers.

The highest ranking guest to have joined me on the NAAFI Break, not that it is of huge significance, but  I have been curious to see a different perspective and approach to the transition process. What is more comforting and enlightening,  is that it is clear that rank has no bearing on post-service success and the challenges are consistent across all ranks.
Simon offers some excellent observations about translating your military experiences into confidence for your next career choice.

09 Apr 2023NAAFI Break with Roger Green - Standing up for others00:43:55

It is always invigorating to hear the stories of second career success, but even more so when that person not only transitions well, but then ‘gives back’ to help the ne t generation of Service Leavers.
Roger Green is a man with an infectious energy and enthusiasm to share his experiences and help others, a trait which can be traced back to his early military training days, as the older cadet.

The detail and planning Roger went to when planning his transition is a great example of using your military training and skills to great effect.

Roger and I are working on further support for the Veteran Community in my day job with JobOppO.

His energy and desire to give back are what I describe as ‘A Good Apple’

08 May 2023NAAFI Break with Peter Lewis - ‘Work on yourself too!’00:47:31

I’m joined by Peter Lewis, an Army Veteran and Chief People Officer at SuperNova Capital. A Long way from the 16 year old, big fish - little pond, into the Army and a rude  awakening with a dodgy suitcase on arrival at Recruit Training.
Peter is a podcast host in his own rite with his ‘give yourself the chat’ podcast that is worth checking out too! https://open.spotify.com/show/5PM5xspBqr2QTkhQ3K5qqu?si=iy_A7NHpQteGDFDUgfdYPA

Peter provides honest self reflection of how he has learned as much about Leadership since leaving the Army as he did during service, as well as recognising the need to prioritise working on yourself before deciding on the next career move.

Another Insightful and authentic share of lived experience from a Veteran.

02 Jul 2023Carl Simpson -Finding a new way to 'Fizz'00:43:16

Leaving the Military is different for everyone, with many distancing themselves initially before feeling the pullback to reconnect or give back to the Veteran Community. One thing that seemed part of our DNA while serving is being physically fit, albeit for some because there was a mandatory fitness test to pass every year. So why do so many people struggle to maintain their daily activity when they leave? I can't profess t have the silver bullet, my own post-service activity has been a rollercoaster of extremes (it's up right now!) My guest this week is Carl Simpson, an RAF Regiment Veteran who has become a Personal Trainer, using his unique lived experience to carve out a niche, appealing to other male Veterans.

Carl shared his own lived experience, how he has built his online PT business, and shared some insights and advice for those who have fallen out of love with 'Fizz' and beat themselves up about not being able to do what they used to do.

A thought-provoking and insightful conversation for anyone who has left the military but isn't leading their healthiest of lives today!

28 May 2023NAAFI Break with Dorthe Jacobsen - Helping families understand the serving soldier00:42:24

This week my guest is Dorthe Jacobsen, a Dane who has contributed to a series of publications available to the Danish Military to help them understand the impact of their service, deployments etc on their family.
It looks through the lens of the children of different ages and highlights how behaviours and experiences can create an aftershock.
The implications of the serving soldiers behaviour can be destructive and the books help to prepare both parties for what could happen and ensure good communication within the family.
The parallels to the transition are evident. Dorthe has personal experience of this and it was insightful to hear the work that has been done in Denmark Perhaps there is a need to have something similiar in the UK?
Please comment if the subject and conversation resonate with you

11 Jun 2023NAAFI BREAK WITH Ria Jackson - Through a different lens00:42:23

This week my Guest is Ria Jackson, Blogger, Advocate and founder of The V Word, who I would describe as a ‘Doer’. Using her own lived experience to trigger her drive, to create a safe space for  female Veterans to share their different lived experiences.
Bringing the different perspectives into the open, is vital for society, not just exclusively the Armed Forces, to learn how to support the needs of our female Service Personnel both in Service and in the transition to civilian careers.

If like me you have daughters, granddaughters or sisters who may decide to join the Armed Forces in the future, wouldn't you want to know they are accepted, supported and treated with respect and with fairness?  I served during period of time (85-99) where I can recall events that were unacceptable then, never mind now. Let's not contribute to the culture of  finding a carpet to sweep it under.  Our female Serving Personnel and Veterans deserve to be heard. I encourage you to follow up with The V Word podcast.

Another great guest with unique insights and experiences to share to our community with the hope it helps those coming up behind.

Please share to anyone with a Forces connection.

06 Aug 2023NAAFI Break with Angus Peacock- A boy from Croydon01:00:37

The NAAFI Break Podcast has covered many aspects of the transition from the military to a second career, always leaning on the 'truth' and lived experience of those who have served or connected to our Veteran Community. That is why when a guest opens up and expresses their emotions, it is a privelidge to bring their story to the wider consciousness. I have often asked guests if they joined to get away from the life they had or to seek a new adventure and it throws up many reasons for joining. This weeks guest is Angus Peacock, Coach, Leader and Royal Navy Veteran who has made the journey from 'The dark side' of Croydon life via the Royal Navy, China and now lives in San Diego. His career in the Royal Navy saw him commission, but it is his post military career that throws up the most interesting insights.
The effect of military service can have long lasting impact, not solely through PTSD,injury or medical discharge, but in the perception of self and behaviours that can be both positive and sometimes self destructive. Recognising your strengths and weaknesses is crucial in moving forward effectively.
Not every Veteran, was involved in 'Operations' or fired a weapon in conflict, many served during the queiter times in our military history, but still gave up part of their life to serve their country, always prepared to do what was necessary.  It has been uncovered that many left the military because the Operations finished and the thing they most wanted in thier military career was not going to be available. Those that we not in conflict are just as worthy of the title Veteran and deserve recognition.
In over 120 episodes not often does the word 'shame' feature in the lived experience of our Veteran Community, but Angus Peacock explains why 'not doing enough' compared to those who served in conflict throws up some interesting points and his personal validation of his militar career and his part in the development of others was a long time coming after he left the Royal Navy.
Honest, open and insightful, this conversation was everything I hoped the NAAFI Break would be when it started in 2021.

Please like, comment and share to anyone who wants to understand or Veteran Community and the experiences of transition.

03 Mar 2024NAAFI BREAK with Mark ‘Benny’ Hill - Continual Education and Service00:39:07

The NAAFI Break podcast highlights the transition from the military into second career success. The measure of success is subjective and different for everyone, although it is common to define it in many cases as achieving fulfilment by finding a new purpose. Within the Veterans Community there are many examples of ‘giving back’ and when someone leaves the Military and is successful a strong desire to ‘send the elevator down for the next person’ . Mark ‘Benny’ Hill is one of those people, driven to help, to continue to serve others and he has succeeded in negotiating his own transition, to be able to be in a position to continue serving with a purpose.

Another insightful and honest conversation with Mark that I am grateful to have had.

07 Mar 2021NAAFI Break - Grab a brew with Dean Gray (RAF Regiment)00:28:17

I'm Dominic O'Sullivan a 15 year RAF Veteran who served as a Physical Training Instructor from the mid 80's. I have launched the pod to bring aspects of the transition process from the Military and some of the people who have made that transition work for them.

As we continue Series 1, highlighting the skills and traits of our Veterans, I want to introduce you to Dean Gray. He is what I call an 'Above Average Joe' and his journey takes him from 17yr old Recruit to IT Project Manager working with Blue Chip Companies.

What I loved about Dean's story was the length he would go to secure the job, (normalised in his mind by going the extra mile through his military career). His personal discipline and resilience has stayed with him from his RAF Regiment 2 Squadron days.

Now we are in Series 2 highlighting the skills and traits of our Veterans, I want to introduce you to Mark Lane an 'Above Average Joe' and the journey  that took him on a 37  year long service career and is now helping Veterans through his work with Active Plus in the charity sector. In his own words, he didn’t plan the transition as well as he could, his honesty is clear, but he has used the opportunity that presented itself to find a fulfilling and rewarding  purpose.

16 May 2021NAAFI break with The Rowing Marine (Lee Spencer) I wanted to be brave and average!00:55:31

Welcome to the NAAFI break podcast, where we shine a light on the transition process from the military. We speak to Veteranfamily about their experiences and the challenges they faced on leaving the Service and finding a new purpose.

We have looked at the transition through several lenses, this week we change again, to look at the end of the Service career that is thrust open the individual by injury. Lee Spencer is by my definition an Above Average Joe, who growing up wanted to be a brave person. His journey is both raw, emotional and inspiring, with total honesty as he speaks.

Following a traumatic accident which saw him lose his leg, he is now an ambassador for BLESMA and his sole purpose is to keep the injured service personnel in the public consciousness, with incredible feats of human endurance and speaking to others about his experiences.

Please share to anyone with a Service connection or who is interspersed in understanding more about what our Services families have to offer.

There is a bonus episode linked to this in which Veteranfamily read the Rudyard Kipling poem“Tommy” discussed by Lee during his interview.

18 Jul 2021NAAFI break with Bernie De Souza - Invest in yourself00:42:28

The  NAAFI BREAK PODCAST has reached 1500 downloads with over 25 episodes since I started. It has been a catalyst for some great connections and conversations so far. Why?

Transition actually means more than
leaving the service  - for some it alludes to a period of mourning, stepping away from a ingrained vocabulary  and relationships. At the best, this served as an all embracing culture that made service personnel secure and valued and gave a purpose.
The transition the process  has to be understood and learned -it is more than finding a new job!

There are recurring themes, at times our guests are scarily frank and there are sensitive discussions with veterans who have experienced the darker side of ‘transitioning’.
There are those who have experienced overwhelming hurt and disappointment dealing with remnants of culturalisation, that will hit a chord with many.

We explore and discover how Veterans achieve personal growth, find a purpose and often this is seen in support to other veterans, which we celebrate. Success in transition is not judged merely by the size of the salary, it is about fulfillment and purpose.

The subject matter visits both ends of the spectrum - those who the military support and nurture and go on to achieve some semblance of normality and look back on their time with a smile and those who have have had to negotiate, (eventually successful) the barriers which are on the path.
It is not uncommon to find that, you are no longer a big shot and no one understands or cares what you did or what you were and it is sobering, for some a source of anger and frustration - this can be a call to action for those considering leaving, to prepare and soften the blow!

In this episode we meet Bernie De Souza, Author, Keynote Speaker and Business Coach with over 20 years experience. A former RAF PTI, Bernie took the initiative and invested in his own future to create his own opportunities and footprints. A slice of luck, hard work and seeing an opportunity combined to create a successful second career.

I hope you continue to follow and share the transition stories and the messages from the guests, so that they reach those leaving or Veterans who are considering their next stage. #military #podcast #veterans #suicideprevention #support #community #culture #connections #share #people #resilience #growth #success #employeeengagement

01 Aug 2021NAAFI Break with Cara Button - Taking off the Elite Sports ‘uniform’00:37:40

The  NAAFI BREAK PODCAST has been a catalyst for some great connections and conversations so far.  I have been fortunate to find some inspiring guests, who have shared their personal experiences of the transition. It has become apparent that their are many angles that we can look at the transition from, even from the outside, through the eyes of those who support the transition process too, without having worn a military uniform themselves, but who are skilled in the understanding of transition. It doesn't just apply to the military, everyone experiences some form of transition process in their career at some point.
In the coming episodes I will be bring these views and experiences to the table alongside the personal journeys of those who have left the service career behind.

Today it's a timely Olympic connection with a 'bonus' episode featuring Cara Button, Senior Manager for 'Game Plan' part of the Candian Olympic Committee and delivering resources with Elite Athlete support. Cara supports athletes with goal setting, career development, education and the all important transition planning. Life beyond sports career, to develop mentally stronger athletes, who apply what they have learned to the betterment of themselves and their communities.
The parallels to the military transition are incredibly close.  The transition the process  has to be understood and learned -it is more than finding a new job!
