Thomas J. Colbert is an American consultant, writer, producer and former media executive. He is the co-author of The Last Master Outlaw, a book that documents his five-year cold case investigation of D. B. Cooper suspect Robert Rackstraw. The book became the subject of a documentary on the History Channel which Colbert exec-produced. He was a story researcher for CBS and Paramount Pictures and founder of media service Industry R&D. He now heads The Case Breakers, a group of 45+ investigative specialists who volunteer their time to help solve the 250,000 unsolved cold cases in the U.S. You can also see him on the latest Netflix documentary, D.B. Samuel ‘Mad Sam’ DeStefano was a gangster who became one of the Chicago Outfit's most notorious sociopathic killers. Chicago-based FBI agent William Roemer, considered DeStefano to be the worst torture-murderer in the history of the United States. The Outfit used the mentally unstable and sadistic DeStefano for the torture-murders of many people, including Sam’s own bother. However, due to DeStefano's deranged mental state, the Outfit never let him become a made man. At least one Outfit insider also claimed DeStefano was a devil worshiper.

Blackbeard, aka Edward Teach, Thatch or Treach, is one of history’s most famous pirates, who became a huge figure in American folklore. Little is known of Blackbeard’s early life, and his origins have been left to speculation. Blackbeard was first heard of as a pirate late in 1716. The following year he converted a captured French merchantman into a 40-gun warship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, and soon became notorious along the Virginia and Carolina coasts and in the Caribbean Sea. Before his death in November of 1718, Blackbeard was only an active pirate for less than two years. So, why is his legend still so well known?

In September 1974, 31 year old Michael Taylor and his wife Christine began attending a Christian Fellowship Group. Over the next few weeks, Michael became an enthusiastic member of the church. What happened next is difficult to gauge. Michael's breakdown, and his erratic behavior in the days that followed, led the church group to believe that an exorcism was in order. On October 5th, they subjected him to a battery of attempts to cast the demons out from him, screaming at him until around 7:00 the next morning. During the court case that followed, one of the preachers involved would state that they'd managed to exorcise over forty demons from Michael, leaving behind only three, associated with "murder, violence, and insanity." A few hours later, police were at the Taylors' home investigating a murder. Michael had been discovered roaming the streets naked, covered in blood and screaming about the Devil. Inside the family home, Christine's body lay mutilated. What happened to Michael Taylor?

Collier Landry was 11 when his father brutally murdered his mother and buried her in the basement. Landry was only 12 when he took the stand at his father's trial and testified against him. The Travis Walton incident was an alleged abduction of Travis Walton by a UFO on November 5, 1975, while he was working near Snowflake, Arizona. Walton reappeared after a five-day search. The Walton case received mainstream publicity and remains one of the best-known alien abduction stories even though skeptics consider it a hoax. Walton wrote a book about his purported abduction in 1978 called The Walton Experience, which was adapted into a 1993 film.

The nun, Sister Mary Janina, came up missing in 1907 and most everyone in town was in on the search, including bloodhounds and even a clairvoyant. Father Edward was dead set to find Sister Janina's body.....and he did. Sister Janina’s body was discovered 11 years after her disappearance in a shallow grave in the basement of the church. Zigmund Adamski, a 56 year old miner, went missing from his home near Wakefield, England, in June 1980. Five days later his body was found 20 miles from his home at a coal yard in Todmorden. On the back of his head, neck and shoulders were mysterious burns which attracted lots of attention, along with the fact, he was found on top of a 10 foot pile of coal with no coal dust on his body and no evidence of foul play. Twenty-six-year-old Deborah Poe vanished on February 4, 1990, during the graveyard shift at the convenience store where she worked. Police verified that she had waited on customers until 3:05am. At 3:50am, her friend came to the store and found it empty. When police arrived, they found her work smock folded behind the counter. The cash register was locked and there was no evidence of a robbery. There also appeared to be no signs of a struggle. Her car was found parked in its usual spot and nothing appeared to be disturbed. Police soon determined that she had most likely been abducted...

In the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Guards admitted two men posing as police officers responding to a disturbance call. The thieves tied the guards up and looted the museum over the next hour. The case is unsolved; no arrests have been made and no works have been recovered. The FBI has valued the haul at $500 million, and the museum is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the art's recovery, the largest bounty ever offered by a private institution.

In 1865, at the age of nineteen, a girl named Mary Roff who was mentally ill died in Watseka, Illinios. Thirteen years later, another Watseka girl, Lurancy Vennum, almost a stranger to the Roff family, started showing the same type of behavior as Mary Roff. Reportedly, on February 1, 1878, Mary Roff possessed Lurancy's body and remained in possession for 15 weeks. She took over Vennum's body and she behaved like Mary Roff. She did not know Vennum's parents any longer, and wanted to go "home" to the Roff's. When she did, she recognized every old object in the home while describing past events from Mary's childhood. Was this just some elaborate hoax; or is there something more to it?

On May 1st, a body was found inside a barrel at Lake Mead, just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. The remains were found near Hemenway Harbor. Investigators believe the victim was murdered sometime in the 1970's or early 80's. Officials say the victim died from a gunshot wound. Then, as Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department continues to investigate, on May 6th, a second set of human remains were located at Callville Bay. Police believe this victim was not murdered. Experts say more discoveries at the lake are likely as water levels continue receding.

Robert Baron was last seen alive on the night of January 25, 2017, after he dropped off his son off at home after leaving his restaurant. Investigators found blood and a tooth in the restaurant. His car was found a short time later, less than a mile away. Detectives say blood was also found inside the car and there was mud on the tires. Four years later, there's still no sign of Robert Baron.

The Skystone was discovered in 1990 by Angelo Pitoni, an archaeologist and geologist, in Sierra Leone, West Africa. March 24, 1994: Matt’s ninth day of training for his new job. That morning, he arrived at work and parked in the middle of the lot. As he exited his car, Matt Flores was shot once in the back of the head at point-blank range. He probably never even saw his killer. And incredibly, even though there were 22 people in the parking lot at the time, nobody else did either. Then the investigation was held up by bad luck. Despite the presence of several security cameras in the parking lot, the killing itself took place in a blind spot of the cameras. So, why would someone want Matt Flores dead? Family and law enforcement couldn't even come up with a motive.

On September 7, 1987, Tom Young closed up his bookshop and along with his dog, Gus, disappeared. Nine months later, a new resident of this tiny town, Keith Reinhard, opened an antique shop at exactly the same location. On August 7, 1988, Keith closed up his shop for the day. In 1865, at the age of nineteen, a girl named Mary Roff who was mentally ill died in Watseka, Illinios. Thirteen years later, another Watseka girl, Lurancy Vennum, almost a stranger to the Roff family, started showing the same type of behavior as Mary Roff. Reportedly, on February 1, 1878, Mary Roff possessed Lurancy's body and remained in possession for 15 weeks. She took over Vennum's body and she behaved like Mary Roff. She did not know Vennum's parents any longer, and wanted to go "home" to the Roff's. When she did, she recognized every old object in the home while describing past events from Mary's childhood. Was this just some elaborate hoax; or is there something more to it?

In 1928, under the advice of a woman named Nellie Noll aka The River Witch of Marietta, John Blymire believed that he had been cursed by Nelson Rehmeyer. Blymire and his accomplices broke into Rehmeyer's home to find his spell book and break the curse. They were unable to find the book, but did find Rehmeyer himself, whom they killed and mutilated in hopes that this would lift the curse. The three men then set fire to the house, hoping to remove remnants of the curse, as well as to destroy evidence of their murder. However, the house did not burn down as they had hoped. This led to many people further believing that Rehmeyer was a witch and that his power prevented the destruction of the house. The resulting trial drew national media attention and became known as the "witchcraft murder."

44-year-old Jerold Haas' skeletal remains were found in the woods of Ohio in 2018, seven weeks after he was reported missing. His thigh bone was broken, but the cause of death is not known. Megan Lancaster has been missing from Wheelersburg, Ohio since April 3, 2013. In 2020, former Portsmouth city council member and attorney Michael Mearan was arrested on a total of 18 charges spanning human trafficking, racketeering and compelling and promoting prostitution. The Lancasters believe Mearan had something to do with Megan Lancaster’s disappearance. Her sister-in-law, Kadie Lancaster, found names and phone numbers kept by her missing sister in color-coded notebooks. The entries included notations such as "dance for" and "men who give money," and included Mearan's name and number.

Annie was a 16 year old from Fairfax County, VA. On October 31st 2008, Annie failed to make contact with her parents at the end of the school day. Upon returning home, Annie's father received an automated telephone message from the school saying that Annie had never arrived at school that morning. Two days later on November 2, a person discovered Annie's lifeless body behind a dumpster, in the housing projects of Perkins Homes which is a high-crime Baltimore neighborhood over 50 miles away from Annie's hometown. At that point the investigation became the responsibility of the Baltimore Police Department, who were certain they were dealing with a homicide despite reporting "no signs of physical trauma" on the body. Among the garbage detectives located another item: an empty bottle of Bactine spray, with the lid removed. Another piece of evidence surfaced a few days later. Annie's white Volvo was found abandoned at a nearby gas station with no immediate signs of a struggle. Police were able to lift a single smeared print from the car, which they quickly matched to a known offender in their database: a local teenager named Darnell Kinlaw. During his interrogation, Darnell claimed that he and a few of his friends had found the Volvo with Annie inside by chance, and decided to take it for a joyride after depositing her body behind the dumpster where she was later found. He insisted that Annie was already deceased by the time they came across the vehicle and has consistently maintains to this day that neither he, nor his friends, had any involvement in her disappearance or death. Police carefully scrutinized the empty Bactine bottle that was found alongside her body. Even more significantly, Annie's DNA was found on the open rim, yet her fingerprints were nowhere to be found anywhere on the bottle. The manner of death was ruled a suicide.

On May 27, 1999, Dale Williams went missing after he apparently received a phone call from a stranded motorist requesting assistance. Williams owned a body shop in the town of Nucla, Colorado at the time. Five weeks later his 1994 white Ford truck was found submerged at the confluence of the San Miguel and Dolores rivers, but there were no sign of Williams. 22 years later he's still missing without a trace.

Jonathan Paul Luna was an American lawyer found dead under mysterious circumstances in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania while serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in Baltimore, Maryland. Luna had been stabbed 36 times with his own pocketknife and then drowned in a creek next to his car. Investigations have proven inconclusive, and there is debate on whether Luna's death was murder or suicide.

Gunner Lindbloom was born into the Tocco family of Detroit and became an enforcer by the time he was 20 years old. He was incarcerated for extortion, bank robbery, armed robbery, kidnapping, weapons violations, and several other crimes. Michelle Knotek is an American convicted murderer from Raymond, Washington. She was convicted in 2004 of second-degree murder and manslaughter for her role in the torture and deaths of Kathy Loreno and Ronald Woodworth, who were both boarders in Knotek's home. Michelle Knotek was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Her husband David Knotek, was paroled in 2016 after serving 13 years. The Knoteks' crimes made national headlines due to allegations of abuse and torture.
