Our guest today is Dr. Karen Shenoy. Dr. Shenoy is the Associate Director of Veterinary Affairs with Hill’s Pet Nutrition. She’s held several roles throughout her career, including one as a full-time wildlife veterinarian. “I said I’m a veterinarian. And so then I asked ‘Does everyone know what that is?’ And then I looked at the girl and said, ‘If I brought my dog to you would you play with him?’ And that frown turned upside down and she smiled. And when I tell you the lightbulb turned on for me. I immediately left and went over to the director and I was like ‘Do you guys do career day here what do you do? I need to come and talk about veterinary medicine and bring my dog’.”

After that she moved to the west coast where she has held various clinical roles, started an organization to help homeless and low-income families care for their pets and pursued positions in the Public Health space. Her current roles include Manager of Santa Cruz County Public Health’s Communicable Disease Unit, Veterinarian and founder of Healthy Pets for All and relief veterinarian at various clinics in the Santa Cruz area. We dig into all of this and learn so much through our discussion. Dr. DeBaene truly inspired us throughout this episode. She is a tremendous advocate and ambassador for the veterinary profession, and we cannot wait to share this journey with you.

“There was an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 associated with people eating tiger meat sandwiches or cannibal sandwiches. It’s not actually tiger, it’s not tiger meat but that’s what we heard, so when we are at the health department, we saw some lab report coming in of the same strain of O157:H7 and that triggers us to initiate some kind of investigation”

“I think I was sort of Vice President of the class. And my primary role senior year was setting up the vet school happy hour and so I think I took it on mostly because Kinkos was right next to Dairy Queen and Thursday was dollar blizzard night and that’s when I would go up and get blizzards and photo copy the signs to paste all of the vet school that showed where we were to get together on Friday nights”

From here she spent time as an associate veterinarian and as a relief veterinarian before starting Steers Veterinary Services. Dr. Steers continues to be involved in organized veterinary medicine and has been a speaker at many conferences as well as a board member for the Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative. Our guest today is Dr. Austin Leedy. Dr. Leedy is a captain in the US army and a 2016 graduate from Auburn University. We had a great conversation and learned how she became interested in the US Army and what life has been like since graduation. Our guest on today’s bonus episode of My Veterinary Life Podcast is Dr. Jonathan Runstadler. Dr. Runstadler is a professor of Virology, Immunogenetics, and Disease Ecology in the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. We had a great time learning more about infectious diseases and brushing up on some of our virology knowledge. It was incredible to learn how quickly his lab pivoted from working on influenza research to working on COVID-19 studies. He even shares some of the latest research they are working on and what they hope to accomplish. This is a really great way to learn yet another way veterinarians are making a difference during the pandemic!

“I’m the first and only veterinarian to be chief of staff of the office of the Surgeon General. But it’s again another testament to the DVM degree.”

Our guest today is Dr. Michael Blackwell. Dr. Blackwell is a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Tuskegee University. He has had a truly incredible and inspirational career which has taken him to places he never expected. Following in his father’s footsteps, he started out in a mixed animal practice in Oklahoma, after that he spent many years with the FDA. He then moved on to become the first, and so far, only, veterinarian to serve as the chief of staff in the office of the Surgeon General. He also spent time as the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee. He is back at the University now and working on programs to help provide affordable care to all pet owners. We also talk about how being a part of a minority group has impacted his veterinary career and why he took certain rolls even if it wasn’t where he initially saw himself going in veterinary medicine. It’s a great conversation and we are so excited to share this journey with you!
