A writer who never dreamed of writing fiction? An avid reader all her life, an editor, reviewer, speech writer, Max Folsom never envisioned herself an author, a mystery writer.

Todays guest is Robert Young. A native of Tennessee, he grew up watching his father conduct investigations as a Special Agent with CSX Railroad Police. Wanting to follow in his footsteps, he joined the Metro Nashville Police Department in 2007 upon graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Criminal Justice. For more than a decade Robert served in many capacities within the police department, including; patrol division, flex unit, crime suppression units, countywide narcotics, and the Drug Task Force. In March 2018, he retired from law enforcement and started his own private investigations and securities firm, Covert Results. Over the course of eleven months, Robert and his team put together one hell of a story; A book based on a true wiretap case where Robert was the lead Agent. The case, set in 2014 and 2015 had a major impact on the city of Nashville after a record cocaine seizure worth more than 3 million dollars. The book titled “Gray: Rise & Fall of 1422,” It chronicles cocaine, corruption, money, politics, and even death. In March 2018, he retired from law enforcement and started his own private investigations and security firm, Covert Results.

She was his age when she went missing in 1989 and she lived in the city next to where he grew up. It was and is a story that looms large over the community. He spoke with people he trusted and began setting up interviews with all the major players in the case. The podcast is called Who Killed Amy Mihaljevic? He appeared in Investigation Discovery’s documentary, The Lake Erie Murders: Who Killed Amy MIhaljevic? in December 2018.  When Mark Edward Langley was 9, he moved to a south suburb of Chicago, where he lived until 18 and his father was transferred to Houston, TX. Langley took a job with B. Dalton Booksellers and begun his love for reading.  Langley has always felt a kinship with the American Southwest.  When he was young, his parents took him on vacation out west where his heart and soul were touched by the beauty of the landscape and the wonder of its people. When he was older, he began reading Robert B. Parker, Mickey Spillane,  John D. McDonald, Ernest Hemingway, Tony Hillerman, and more recently, Craig Johnson of Longmire fame.   But it was when he took a two-week trip into the West of his youth in his thirties, that he realized he had found his true home.  Researching his debut novel, Path of the Dead, he drove from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Glacier National Park, Montana, traveling through the beautiful and iconic scenery that was to become the book's majestic backdrop. Upon revisiting New Mexico, doing research for his second novel, Death Waits in the Dark, he had the wonderful opportunity to meet with some of the Navajo people and have an open and respectful conversation.  Langley is an award-winning author of the Arthur Nakai Mystery Series, with Death Waits in the dark winning both as a finalist in the American Book Fest Awards 2020 and winning the coveted Feathered Quill Award for Best Mystery of 2021. His third novel in the series, When Silence Screams, will be released in August of 2021. He is currently writing his fourth novel of the series, Broken Glass, due out August 2022. Langley and his wife, Barbara, divide their time between their home in Indiana and New Mexico.

Paul Kemprecos' fiction-writing career owes its start to the bad navigation of an 18th-century pirate. For it was in 1717 that a ship named Whydah went aground off Cape Cod, reportedly carrying a fabulous treasure. Samuel Bellamy, the ship's captain, was drowned along with most of the crew. In the 1980s, three salvage groups went head-to-head, competing to find the wreck. He was working for a newspaper covering the treasure hunt. The controversy over the salvage got hot at times, and he thought there might be a book based on the story. He developed my own detective, an ex-cop, diver, fisherman, and PI named Aristotle "Soc" Socarides. He was more philosophical than hard-boiled. His first appearance was in "Cool Blue Tomb," which won the Shamus Award for Best Paperback novel. After many years in the newspaper business, I turned to writing fiction and churned out five more books in the series. Clive Cussler blurbed: "There can be no better mystery writer in America than Paul Kemprecos." Several months after the release of "Bluefin Blues," Clive called and said a spin-off from the Dirk Pitt series was in the works. It would be called the NUMA Files, and he wondered if I would be interested in tackling the job. I took on the writing of "Serpent," which brought into being Kurt Austin and the NUMA Special Assignments Team. Austin had some carry-over from Soc, and another team member, Paul Trout, had been born on Cape Cod. The book made The New York Times bestseller list, as did every one of seven NUMA Files that followed, including "Polar Shift," which bumped "The Da Vinci Code" for first place. After eight NUMA Files, He went back to writing solo. He wrote an adventure book entitled, "The Emerald Scepter," which introduced a new hero, Matinicus "Matt" Hawkins. In 2013, He brought Soc back again in a seventh Socarides book entitled, "Grey Lady." After that book, he wrote a sequel to the first Matt Hawkins book, entitled, "The Minoan Cipher," which was nominated for a Thriller Award in the Best Paperback category for 2017 by the International Thriller Writers. The eighth Soc book, "Shark Bait," incorporates the aforementioned story of the Whydah, its doomed captain Samuel Bellamy, and his lover, Mary Hallett. My guest to today is Joseph Wambaugh. Joe is a bestselling American writer known for his fictional and non-fictional accounts of police work in the United States. Several of his first novels were set in Los Angeles, California, and its surroundings, and featured Los Angeles police officers as protagonists. He has been nominated for 4 Edgar Awards (winning 3), and was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.

The son of a police officer, Wambaugh was born in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and married at 18. Burt specializes in personal injury and defective product investigations for the plaintiff. He has been licensed by the State of Florida as a private investigator since 1981. Burt has served in a variety of positions in several professional associations. He was a two-term president of the Florida Association of Licensed Investigators and also held other board positions for almost ten years. He served two terms as the national director of the National Association of Legal Investigators after having completed two terms as its Region 3 director. Burt is a recipient of the Al Stone Award for Excellence presented by the Florida Association of Licensed Investigators. He was also designated Investigator of the Year for 2006 by the Florida Board of Certified Investigators. My guest today is Frank Zafiro Frank served in the U.S. Army from 1986-91 in Military Intelligence as a Czechoslovak linguist. In 1993, he became a police officer in Spokane, Washington. During his career, he worked as a patrol officer, corporal, and detective before entered into leadership roles, becoming a sergeant in 2002. He was fortunate enough to command patrol officers, investigators, K-9 officers (and their dogs!), and the SWAT team. Frank retired from law enforcement in 2013 as a captain in order to write full time and to teach. From 2013-17, he taught law enforcement subject matter at the community college and university, and leadership as a national instructor for a prominent police institution. He also occasionally teaches a series of writing workshops. Frank earned a BA in History from Eastern Washington University in 1998, and an MS in Administration of Justice from the University of Louisville in 2012. Frank began writing seriously at about thirteen. In 1995, he started a draft of Under A Raging Moon, which would become the first book in the River City series of crime fiction. Since then, Frank has completed multiple novels set in River City, a fictional version of Spokane, Washington, such as the Stefan Kopriva mystery series. Paul Rubin's career began in 1980 as the courts/police reporter for the Sierra Vista Herald/Bisbee Daily Review in southeast Arizona, and he spent most of his career as the senior reporter at the weekly Phoenix New Times, where he became one of Arizona’s most celebrated journalists. During his 27 years at New Times, he was selected as Arizona’s Journalist of the Year three times and was runner-up eight other years, including 2012--the year that the paper laid him off for economic reasons. Lori Duffy Foster is a former crime reporter who writes fiction and nonfiction from the hills of Northern Pennsylvania, where she lives with her husband and four children. She was born and raised in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, where a part of her heart remains.

Scott is a licensed private investigator in Utah and Colorado. Moreover, he is a prolific author and speaker. He is an Army veteran and served with the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels) in the first Gulf War Afterwards; he attended the University of Texas at San Antonio. He graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice and Security Management. While in college, Scott began working for one of the largest private investigation firms in Texas.
