20 Feb 2021 | Bassist Rhonda Smith (Prince and the NPG, Jeff Beck) | 00:14:01
With an enviable career that has spanned over two decades, it is no surprise that Rhonda hails from musical lineage. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the family moved to the French and Jazz-influenced Montreal while Rhonda was still a child. There, she was surrounded by the sounds of piano riffs, her mother’s instrument of choice, as well as a lot of rock & roll. As a child, Rhonda and her three musically-inclined siblings, learned how to play the baritone horn, keyboard, guitar, and of course, bass. “My older brother is the reason why I play bass. He brought a bass home one day and told me not to touch it.” In an effort to deepen her connection to music, Rhonda attended McGill University in Montreal where she studied jazz performance. During her college stint, she began touring as one of a small group of female artists within the local male dominated rock music scene. This experience helped to build her chops when it came time for Rhonda to win the respect and admiration of her male counterparts. She went on to work with many notable Canadian artists including Claude Dubois, Daniel Lavoie, Robert Charlebois, and Joanne Blouin. She won a coveted Juno Award (The Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for her work with Jim Hillman and The Merlin Factor. A chance meeting with Sheila E. at a music convention in Germany opened the doors to Rhonda’s lengthy tenure with his Royal Badness, Prince. “Sheila knew that Prince was putting a new band together so I gave her my press kit and she sent it to him. I didn’t hear from him for 2 months and I thought he wasn’t going to call… but thankfully he did. I flew up to Paisley Park and my audition was basically a jam session with him and a drummer. Suffice it to say he liked what he heard. The same day he had me in the studio recording bass parts on the Emancipation album.” Having received International acclaim for her various contributions and collaborations, it wasn’t long before Rhonda took the United States by storm. In addition to the near decade she spent along side Prince, Rhonda has performed with the likes of Chaka Khan, Beyonce, T. I., Erykah Badu, Patti Austin, Patrice Rushen, Brenda Russell, Lee Ritenour, Larry Graham, Patti Labelle, Little Richard, Najee, Candy Dulfer, Rachel Farrell, Kirk Whalum and George Clinton. With an innate desire to extend her reach, Rhonda has managed to step outside of music and broaden her imprint. She has been featured in numerous music videos, appeared on the covers of Bass Player and Bassics magazines and even spent stints with The Martin Short Show and The Wayne Brady Show. She has 3 Platinum Plaques on her wall and in 2004 played for 1.4 million attendees over 88 sold-out dates on Prince’s wildly successful Musicology Tour. Despite her bevy of accomplishments, there was yet another frontier that Rhonda was compelled to conquer. Recording Artist. Released in 2000, “Intellipop” marked Rhonda’s first release as a soloist. Taking the incalculable experience of working alongside some of the industry’s most revered pioneering talents, along with a treasure trove of perfect melodies, Rhonda skillfully packaged it all in a disc that earned her the respect she rightfully deserves. RS2, Rhonda’s sophomore CD, is a breakout and breakthrough record that beautifully...
04 Feb 2021 | Amy Lynn and Alex Hamlin Interview | 00:29:26
It’s no surprise that Amy Lynn Zanetto brings star power to the stage whenever she performs live, fronting her band The Honey Men. With a career in musical theater that includes a 10-year stint in the cast of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the New York City-based vocalist also has an established track record as a bandleader. At its performance at the Milford Arts Council last year, Amy Lynn & The Honey Men “blew the roof off,” according to MAC officials. So by popular demand, the rock and R&B ensemble sporting a three-piece horn section made a return engagement to the MAC on Feb. 22nd. Amy Lynn & The Honey Men have toured throughout the United States and often gig up and down the East Coast, averaging 30 shows last year. Zanetto and her husband, Alex Hamlin, who plays baritone sax and does all the horn arranging, started the band about 10 years ago. The two also perform as a duo and write songs together. 30 Jun 2022 | Grammy Award-Winning Producer/Keyboardist Monte Moir (Morris Day and The Time, Janet Jackson) | 00:38:51
AS A MEMBER OF THE LOCAL BAND FLYTE TYME, HIS KEYBOARDS PROVIDED A DRAMATIC BACKDROP FOR SUCH MINNEAPOLIS SUPERSTARS AS ALEXANDER O’NEAL AND CYNTHIA JOHNSON, THE DIVA VOICE WHO LOFTED LIPPS INC TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS WITH “FUNKYTOWN” IN 1980. HIS TRACK RECORD AS A COMPOSER AND PRODUCER INCLUDES “THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE”, ONE OF JANET JACKSON’S BREAKTHROUGH HITS FROM “CONTROL” IN 1986.Moir remains one of the core members of the Time, the band who played comedic and funky foils to Prince in “Purple Rain”, and the group now elevated to cult hero status in the new film, “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. While still in college, Moir began playing with the outfit, which was retooled by Prince into the group fronted by Morris Day and featured another set of musical legends-in-the-making, bassist Terry Lewis and keyboard player Jimmy Jam. After releasing tow stellar records (their self-titled first album and What Time Is It?) and barnstorming the country as the opening act for Prince, they hit their commercial stride with “Ice Cream Castle”, the album which featured both of their Purple Rain singles, “Jungle Love” and “The Bird”. Even Prince was taken aback by the group’s success. In 1986, he told a Detroit radio interviewer, “They were, to be perfectly honest, the only band I was afraid of. They were turning into, like, Godzilla.” Buoyed by their success, Jam and Lewis left the Time to concentrate on producing, guitarist Jesse Johnson and front man Morris Day also enjoyed solo success, and Moir struck out on his own as well. He became the man behind the scenes of such records as “If You Were Here Tonight” by Alexander O’ Neal and Deniece Williams’ Dove Award nominated CD, “From the Beginning”, which featured Moir’s “All I need”. In the years since, Moir has divided his schedule between roadwork with The Time (a reunion album in 1990 called Pandemonium yielded another hit single in “Jerk Out”) and writing and production work with some of the most stellar names in R&B. To date, Moir has collaborated with Gladys Knight and the Pips, Junior, Thelma Houston, Deja, Mica Paris, St. Paul, Ruby Turner, Cheryl Lynn, Force MDs and Patti Austin. He has received tow platinum and seven gold record awards for his work. Years of forging hits for others convinced Moir to step out on his own into the limelight, and “This Side of Paradise” brims with the promise of the memorable compositions which have gone before. “Here”, he says, “I’m able to take a musical idea from conception all the way through to completion and express myself in ways I sometimes can’t when writing for others. Also, being able to step outside of the box that the music industry likes to place around people is empowering.” Songwriting remains first and foremost for him. “Songs, especially personal ones, are a reflection of thoughts and emotions a person feels about his or her condition at a particular time. The process of translating those thoughts and emotions into a musical from has always fascinated me,” he muses. ___________________________ Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Prince featured the "Upper Room with Joe Kelley and Gi Dussault" on his official website www.npgmusicclub.com. 29 Jan 2021 | UK R&B Singer Junior Giscombe Interview | 00:38:21
Norman Washington "Junior" Giscombe (born 6 June 1957) is an English singer-songwriter (frequently known simply by the mononym, Junior) who was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States. He is best known for his 1982 hit single, "Mama Used to Say". CAREERGiscombe was born in Wandsworth, London, and was a backing vocalist with Linx between 1980 and 1982. When turning towards a solo career, he was first billed simply as Junior and he scored a #7 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1982, with "Mama Used to Say". His follow-up single, "Too Late" also made the Top 20 in the UK. "Mama Used to Say" was also a Top 40 Pop hit and Top 5 R&B in the United States, earning him a "Best Newcomer" award from Billboard magazine. Sometime (most likely) around 1984 and 1985, Junior Giscombe recorded (and very possibly co-wrote) an unknown number of songs with Phil Lynott, the former leader, vocalist and bass player of hard rock band Thin Lizzy. Lynott died in January 1986 and the songs were never officially released. Most remain as demos, but one of the songs, "Lady Loves to Dance", was mastered and nearly released before being pulled by the record company. Some of the songs are available on YouTube, including "What's the Matter Baby" (Giscombe provides backing vocals) and "Time (and Again)" (Giscombe shares vocals with Lynott). After a period outside the charts, he made a brief return to the Top 10 in 1987 when he sang a duet with Kim Wilde on "Another Step (Closer to You)". He also became involved with the formation of Red Wedge in 1986 with Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Paul Weller, and had been a part of The Council Collective with The Style Council, Jimmy Ruffin and others for the 1984 fundraising single, "Soul Deep" and in 1992 appeared on stage at the 1992 Labour rally in SheffieldSheffield_Rally singing Curtis Mayfield's[[1]] 'Move on Up'. Later Giscombe became better known as a songwriter for various artists, including Sheena Easton. He is currently a DJ with internet radio station Solarradio.com, although he is not listed on their website. Giscombe is the uncle of British comedian Richard Blackwood, who sampled "Mama Used to Say" on his single "Mama – Who Da Man" in June 2000.

25 Jan 2024 | Funk Legend FOLEY (Miles Davis, George Clinton) Part 1 | 00:29:28
Foley was born in Columbus, Ohio. Growing up he listened to Sly and the Family Stone, and after his mother bought him a bass (at age 12) he started playing with local bands. In 1987, he had a phone conversation with Marcus Miller, then Miles Davis's bass player, and afterward sent him a tape of his music. Weeks later he got a call from Davis, who'd heard the tape and asked Foley to send him a copy: Miles Davis was looking for a guitarist, but at that time Foley had been working on getting his bass to sound like a guitar. By May 1987 Foley was touring with Davis, and played with him until the fall of 1991. In 1993 he played a lead bass solo on Mint Condition's R&B Top 40 hit "So Fine" and the interlude track "Gumbo" from their album From the Mint Factory. In 1993, during his time at Motown, Foley released 7 Years Ago...Directions in Smart-Alec Music. The album included "If It's Positive".[4] The Cité de la Musique showed a Miles Davis exhibition from October 16, 2009, to January 17, 2010, that included Foley's "lead bass". Foley has also toured and recorded with funk legend George Clinton and engineered for Prince. 06 Jan 2022 | 94 East (Prince, Minneapolis Sound) Interview | 00:44:44
Pepé Willie's band – 94 East – will always be remembered as the band that gave the young Prince Rogers Nelson his first studio experience – let's face it, a good enough reason to be remembered. What's often overlooked is the skill and talent of Willie's ensemble and the influence it had on the developing 'Minneapolis Sound' – not to mention the influence it had on the developing Prince.“ – Quote from Snapper Music 94 EAST was originally formed in the 70s by Pepé Willie. The group was named after Interstate 94; and “East” acknowledges the connection between Pepé’s roots in Brooklyn, NY, and Minneapolis. Pepé was raised in a family of singers and musicians and learned the business of music in the 60s working with his Uncle, Clarence Collins, founding member of Little Anthony & The Imperials – 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Little Anthony and the Imperials were at the height of their career with hits like Shimmy, Shimmy, Koko Bop; Going Out of My Head; and Tears On My Pillow topping both the R&B and pop charts. Pepé watched and listened, absorbing everything he could about the business and the making of hit songs. Pepé hung out with the likes of the Temptations and the Miracles, the Supremes, Chubby Checker, Marvin Gaye, and many others. He then began writing and recording on his own. It was this experience and knowledge that he brought with him to Minneapolis. Pepé moved to Minneapolis in 1974 and met Marcy Ingvoldstad, and Kristie Lazenberry. Marcy and Kristie were singers and started working with Pepé doing background vocals and writing. Together with Wendell Thomas (bass), Dale Alexander (drums), Pierre Lewis (keyboards), and Pepe’ on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, the first iteration of 94 East was born. Later, Andre’ Lewis (lead guitar) joined the group and Dale was replaced with Bobby Rifkin (later known as Bobby “Z”, drummer for Prince’s band, The Revolution). Currently, 94 East is comprised of the three core members – Pepe’, Marcy and Kristie. While working on 94 East’s demo, Pepe’ started working closely with his then-wife’s cousin, Prince (Rogers Nelson) and his band, Grand Central (Andre’ Cymone, Morris Day, William Dowdy, and Linda Anderson). Pepe’ hired Prince to record on 94 East’s tracks, known historically as the Cookhouse Five. PMI’s behind the scenes presence and significant contributions to the development of the Minneapolis music scene had a profound effect on the birth and consequent growth of the Minneapolis Sound and it’s part in American music history. 94 East released Minneapolis Genius 94 East featuring Prince; The Historical Recordings in 1985 on Hot Pink Records. In 1995, 94 East released an 2-CD set on the UK label, Charly Records, titled, Symbolic Beginning. The songs from this 2 CD-set have been licensed and sold all around the world giving 94 East an international following. In 2008, 94 East released 94 East featuring 10:15 & Fortune Teller Remix with Prince on Guitar on their label, Reo Deo (digitally distributed by Entertainment One). Two songs from this CD, 10:15 and Fortune Teller, were originally recorded at Sound 80 Recording Studios in Minneapolis. In 2010, 94 East released The Cookhouse Five, the original 1975 session, This 35th anniversary commemorative CD not only reflects the incredible talent of the young musicians of 94 East, but also the incredible talents of a 17-year old Prince. Most recently (2011), 94 East released the single, Leaving You Behind. 94 East’s music is characterized as positive, upbeat R&B/Pop with Hip Hop and Rock, appealing to a wide variety of listeners. They currently perform both track shows and full band shows. Their band includes Matt (“Doctor”) Fink on keyboards -- former Prince and The Revolution keyboardist, Marshall Charloff on guitar – an accomplished performer and songwriter who plays many instruments, a young talented drummer -- Brandon Johnson, and Ace Mack, a veteran bass player.

Tours with Prince: The Gold Experience/The Ultimate Live Experience (1995/96), The Interactive Tour (1994), Act II (1993), Act I (1993), Diamonds & Pearls (1992), Nude Tour (1990) Albums with Prince: Diamonds & Pearls, Symbol, Come, The Gold Experience, Chaos & Disorder, The Vault: Old Friends For Sale, New Power Soul, Gold Nigga, Exodus, Emancipation, and Crystal Ball / The Truth Well known to those in Prince’s world is the fact that Sonny taught Prince how to play bass. When Prince first put the NPG together, he personally drafted a press release for his new publicist that stated, “Also new in the band is Prince’s musical idol, Sonny T. Sonny served as a role model for Prince growing up in North Minneapolis. Self-taught – Sonny can play or sing anything he hears – soul, jazz, classical – anything! Sonny plays bass in the N.P.G. although he doubles on every other instrument.” Sonny was the featured vocalist on New Power Generation releases, Exodus, and Gold Nigga. Following his time in the NPG, he became a member of Nick Jonas and the Administration (a project created BY Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers) along with other former members of the New Power Generation, drummer Michael Bland and keyboardist Tommy Barbarella. Sonnny had played with the Family, the house band at a community center called “The Way” that was one of Prince’ favorite haunts in his youth. In fact, both Sonny and Prince performed together on the Lewis Brothers’ 1979 track, “Got to be Something Here.” But ironically, Sonny sang lead vocals while Prince sang background vocals and played rhythm guitar. ______________ Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Prince featured the "Upper Room with Joe Kelley and Gi Dussault" on his official website www.npgmusicclub.com. 14 Jan 2021 | Guitar/Vocals Jazz Duo Tuck and Patti Interview | 00:24:52
For 41 years this unique, genre-crossing vocal/guitar jazz duo has cast its passionate musical spell worldwide, capturing the hearts of lovers, the respect of jazz buffs and the jaw-dropping awe of guitarists and singers. To understand Tuck & Patti, start with the wellspring of love within them, then their music begins to make perfect sense. Married 38 years, Tuck Andress and Patti Cathcart continue to stoke the fires, not only of their own love, but also of their love of life and their passion for making music together. They have a long-standing tradition: Minimalist arrangements featuring Tuck's extraordinary virtuosity and Patti's rich mezzo soprano. Patti, renowned for her remarkable ability to touch hearts directly with her voice, exudes the soft, centered yet powerful graciousness of a gospel singer; Tuck almost wears his brain on his skin, anticipating the thousands of musical decisions he'll have to send to his ten fingers during the course of a performance. Seeing the virtuosity and complexity of Tuck's guitar work, most are surprised to learn that Patti is the actual writer, arranger and producer. Without even blinking, Tuck-the-problem-solver brags, "Patti writes and arranges; I am just the orchestra."

03 Jan 2024 | Life As A NYC Singer-Songwriter with Scott E. Moore | 00:18:04
Scott E. Moore is a veteran singer-songwriter and guitarist. He's also an accomplished video producer-director-writer and film composer, which he does through his boutique production company WingTip, inc. He works a lot - on a lot of different things: from performing his own music to playing guitar for others to creating diverse high-end video projects for major clients to scoring other people's film and TV work. In 2013 he co-composed and produced 2 hours of gorgeous meditation music for Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey. His business card says "soulful storytelling with pictures and sound," which pretty much sums it up. Scott calls his sound "Americana Soul." His rootsy blend of blues, folk and r&b - as well as his vibe and chops, have made him a comfortable fit performing in venues large and small alongside a diverse group of acts, such as acoustic blues virtusoso Kelly Joe Phelps, Americana crooner Raul Malo (The Mavericks), jazz artists Tuck & Patti, French pop star Tété, folkies Patty Larkin, Steve Forbert, Melissa Ferrick, roots rocker Rhett Miller (The Ol' 97's) and New Orleans band Cowboy Mouth...and even musical comedic legends The Smothers Brothers. And many others. Every few years Scott makes a record. Many longtime fans and followers feel "Home Bittersweet Home" is his strongest. Recorded in East Nashville with producer Neilson Hubbard (Glenn Phillips, Garrison Starr, Stray Don't Sleep), it's a moody, groovy, and lush-sounding collection of Scott's confessional tunes. The songs are driven front & center by Scott's signature sultry, intimate vocal and acoustic guitar, with atmospheric touches of real strings and steel guitar - all anchored by a band consisting of Hubbard's pop-like keyboards and guitar, Marco Giovino (Robert Plant, Patty Griffin, Tom Jones) on drums, James Haggerty (Josh Rouse, The Autumn Defense, Original Blues Brothers) on bass, with Scott adding his bluesy electric playing. __________________ Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Prince featured the "Upper Room with Joe Kelley and Gi Dussault" on his official website www.npgmusicclub.com. 07 Feb 2021 | Saxophonist Candy Dulfer (Prince and the NPG, Dave Stewart) | 00:22:55
It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 26 years since Candy Dulfer rose to fame with her high-profile collaborations with Dave Stewart (the worldwide number 1 smash “Lily was here”) and of course the legendary Prince, whose tongue-in-cheek recommendation (“When I want sax, I call Candy”) in the "Partyman" video made the world sit up and notice the young, glamorous and talented sax player at his side. Their collaboration continued over the years with many studio sessions, TV show appearances, award show performances (including the Grammy Awards), and concert tours around the globe, including Candy joining Prince’s NPG band as a permanent member for his record-shattering Musicology tour & album. Candy has been fortunate to work - both in the studio and on stage - with some of the biggest names in music, including Van Morrison, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Mavis Staples, Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and many others. Despite these high-profile collaborations, Candy mainly focused on her solo career, starting her own band at age 13 and touring the world ever since.
12 Feb 2021 | Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Mavis Staples Interview | 00:24:46
Best known as the lead vocalist of the Staple Singers, a family soul-gospel ensemble that flourished from the 1950s through the 1970s and beyond, Mavis Staples has also released a series of albums as a solo artist. Her voice, not a gospel power-house, was instantly compelling with its deep-like-a-river quality of moral conviction. Over her long career, Staples won other musicians, including Bob Dylan and Prince as admirers, and her solo work, which had never quite found its course among the shifting winds of musical fashion, won new recognition with the release of her 2004 album, Have a Little Faith. In 2005 Staples was set to accept a Grammy award for lifetime achievement on behalf of the Staple Singers, of whom she was the last surviving original member. Mavis Staples was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 10, 1939 (or, according to some sources, 1940). Her father, Roebuck "Pops" Staples, had grown up on Mississippi's Dockery Plantation, a key site in the development of the blues, and had learned to play the guitar from the great early bluesman Charley Patton. After he moved north to Chicago in 1936 he began to organize gospel quartets after finishing work at a meatpacking plant, and it was gospel that Mavis Staples heard at home. "He used to play records by the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Soul Sisters, the Blind Boys of Mississippi as well as the Blind Boys of Alabama, but after I heard [gospel great] Mahalia [Jackson] sing 'Move On Up a Little Higher,' I had to play her music every day," Staples told Greg Quill of the Toronto Star.
