05 Sep 2019Ep 113: Olivia Harrison01:02:10
“Olivia really kicked ass. She is a beautiful person. His son, Dhani, is a beautiful kid, man. I’ve seen him recently. He is doing very well — very strong and inspired. Olivia had the hardest job in the world, because she loved George more than all of us, and she really took care of him and cleared the path in front of him, behind him, and inherited that crazy life, you know.“ - Tom Petty Today’s episode is all about Olivia Harrison. Olivia Trinidad Arias met George Harrison after beginning a flirtation over the phone while she was working at his company A&M records. For George, the connection was immediate and would go on to last until the end of his life, and beyond. Olivia never meant to marry someone famous, let alone a Beatle, but her grounded nature and shared passion for meditation as well as a similar sense of humour to George made her a perfect match. Tune in to hear all about this inspiring love story born out of a chaotic period in George’s personal life; a romance that turned into a divine union lasting far beyond the confines of this astral plane. Learn about the woman who inspired so many of George’s songs such as, Dark Sweet Lady and This is Love, and who was by his side while he tended to his many gardens and as he left this world. Thank you to Andrea from Harrison Archive for providing such incredible quotes and resources for this episode. 30 May 2019Ep 107: Interview with Rita Rae Roxx01:19:18
Way back in episode 64 Chanty told Lynx all about Rita Rae Roxx and her incredibly fun memoir Once Upon a Rock Star: Backstage Passes in the Heavy Metal Eighties – Big Hair, Bad Boys (and One Bad Girl). This time around we couldn't have been more excited to chat with Rockin' Rita herself! A friend wrote in Rita’s 1982 high school yearbook: “I hope that someday you will meet your true David Lee Roth … and become a rock and roll queen.” Well, she DID and she IS. Rita's extensive scrapbooks of backstage passes and personal photos are a record of a lifestyle that rock fans only dream about. After leaving Omaha and moving to LA, Rita pursued heavy metal bands throughout the 1980s and well into the 90s. She eventually traded rock stars for movie stars and did a stint in a stand-up comedy. After leaving LA with more memories than any single person could ever experience, Rita returned to her hometown and is a hard-working mom who is active in her church. RIta still goes to shows and supports bands in her community, and you can hear all about it in today's show!  Make sure to check out Rita's websitehttp://www.onceuponarockstarbook.com/ & follow her adventures on Instagram and Twitter @RitaRaeRoxx Learn more about your ad choices. 12 Dec 2019Ep 120: Audrey and Hank Williams01:07:23
This week we travel back in time to the 1940's & '50's where Hank Williams shook the world with a new sound dubbed 'Hillbilly Rock' Hank may have had an incredible voice and song-writing skills like no other, but without the strong willed women who surrounded him the world may never have known. As a child it was his momager Lillie Stone pushing him to be all he could until he met the love of his life and muse for all of his songs, Audrey Mae Sheppard in 1943. With Audrey by his side Hanks career skyrocketed. She booked the interviews, tours, created his rockabilly image, was involved in (and came up with the ideas for) all of Hanks business proposals and even joined the band onstage now and again. As Audrey once said "He was lucky with a God-given talent, and I was lucky with a few brains." Career wise things couldn't have been better but behind the scenes things weren't as rosy. An alcoholic since he was just an early teen, Hanks addiction, and the mood swings that came from it had the couple in constant turmoil. Life certainly wasn't easy, but it did make for great songwriting material. Research for this episode came from the book Still in Love with You: The Story of Hank and Audrey Williams by Dale Vinicur and Lycretia Williams (their daughter!). Learn more about your ad choices. This week the Muses discuss sisters Jean and Chrissie Shrimpton and their lives as public figures in the Swinging London scene. Dubbed the World's first Supermodel, Jean appeared on every magazine imaginable in the 60's. Muse to her then boyfriend, photographer David Bailey, Jean rose to the top of the fashion world where she dominated the scene for the next decade. Her younger sister Chrissie was also a model, but it was her relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger that catapulted her into the public eye. Their 3 year relationship became a source of material for Jagger who would go on to write many not-so-friendly songs about the beauty. Tune in to hear their story! This week Chanty's presents the story of Patsy Cline based on her biography Patsy Cline: Honky Tonk Angel by Ellis Nassour. As a child, Patsy knew that she would grow up to be a famous singer. Patsy didn't wait for doors to open for her, she kicked them down and carved a path for herself. Patsy was ahead of the times in both her singing, musicianship and feminism. Patsy lead by example, showing other women in the industry what it meant to stand up for yourself. Patsy was a generous and loyal friend as well as a loving mother. 13 May 2021Ep 161: Linda McCartney01:12:19
This week we discuss the life and career of Linda McCartney along with her relationship with Paul. Daughter of showbiz attorney Lee Eastman, Linda grew up with deep respect and fascination for the arts. By her late teens an interest in photography led her to New York City where she began her career shooting all the most respected musicians of the 60's. Linda's naturally gifted eye and her ability to connect to her subjects made her a favourite of anyone she happened to shoot and made her photographs some of the most intimate portraits you can find. When Linda first met Paul McCartney she knew she'd found the one. The pair would marry within 22 months, just as The Beatles were coming to an end. What should have been a time of celebration was instead marred by Paul's depression as well as the fan and media scrutiny over their marriage. Linda became Paul's support through this time and through their love he found another collaborative partnership. While Linda never aspired to be a musician, Paul wanted her by his side and over the next decade they would perform together as Wings. If they had thought that the scrutiny over their marriage was rough, they had no idea how bad it would get, from their own friends nonetheless, when Linda joined the band. Through it all they remained together growing stronger as the years progressed. By the 80's Linda had found a newfound passion for Animal Rights and helping to spread the word about vegetarianism. Linda would put out multiple vegetarian cookbooks as well as her own incredibly successful meatless frozen foods line. She is considered to be one of the leading activists to publicly bring attention to animal rights and initiate change before she succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 56. This week we discuss the life and career of Rita Coolidge. Rita Coolidge has had one hell of a career. Harmonizing with her sisters since before she could talk, it was only natural that Rita would begin her journey as a backing singer, helping to support artists like Delaney and Bonnie, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and many more. From there Rita began an impressive solo career, releasing over 20 albums since 1971. Not just a talented singer-songwriter, Rita was also a muse to the likes of Leon Russell who wrote Delta Lady as well as A Song for You to show his appreciation and Stephen Stills with Cherokee and Sit Yourself Down. Rita also made music with her husband Kris Kristofferson. During their 9 year relationship they would release 3 albums and earn 2 Grammys. 15 Jul 2021Ep 170: Cherry Vanilla01:03:55
This week we discuss the exciting life and career of Cherry Vanilla. Cherry Vanilla has certainly lived life to the fullest. At just 19 she was one of the first, and certainly youngest women managing major clients at an ad agency (Think Mad Men!) while also breaking barriers as the first female DJ in the NYC nightclub scene. After watching the documentary Groupies Cherry had "At last had a name and a vision for the role I'd been dying to play for so long, along with an awareness of a sisterhood of like-minded role models.” Cherry wasn't just a part of the music scene though, she also participated in the "Theatre of the Ridiculous" working with people like Jayne County and many regulars from the Warhol factory scene. In 1971 she starred in Andy Warhol's London production of Pork. It was while there that she met David Bowie, who had yet to break onto the American charts. When Bowie and his manager Tony Defries were looking to establish a New York office for his company Mainman they knew exactly who to call. All Cherry's previous work experience made her the perfect woman for the job. She would become Bowie's main PR spokesperson and later move up to VP of their audio/visual division, helping to solidify his place as a rock n roll icon.If all that weren't enough, by the end of the 70's Cherry would hit the stage herself, becoming immersed in the new punk scene and releasing 2 albums herself. Cherry's incredible passion for life, love and music is inspiring and after checking out the episode make sure you also purchase her fantastic memoir, Lick Me, where ever you buy your books! 30 Sep 2021Ep 172: Patti Johnsen Part 201:08:12
This week I am joined once again by the magnetic Patti Johnsen in a discussion on what being a true groupie means. You may remember our previous interview with Patti Johnsen, alumni of the Rainbow Bar & Grill as well as the creator of the Groupie Round Table, or perhaps you remember her name from the fabulous chapter she has in Pamela Des Barres book Let's Spend the Night Together. We previously discussed her time touring with Van Halen, meeting George Harrison, her decade long job at the Rainbow, the formation of the Groupie Round Table and rock n roll "Holy Grails". This time around Patti and I discuss the term groupie, what it means to us and it's misconceptions. We also discuss rock n roll decadence, "Almost Famous" tour moments, her incredible friendship with Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister, and what it's like to wake up next to Billy Idol! Patti is one of a kind, she is naturally beautiful inside and out and has the truest groupie soul. It's always such a pleasure to talk to a true groupie sister and I'm so happy she came on again to share more from her incredible past. Patti is also the speaker of one of my favourite interview quotes...."Just because you haven’t fucked a rockstar doesn’t mean you’re not a groupie. A guitar, a Les Paul comes off the assembly line, it hasn’t been played yet. Does it mean it’s not a guitar? Of course it is! And you put that in the hands of a rockstar, you just wait to hear that fucker sing! You are still a groupie because once you get in the hands of a rockstar baby, wait to hear you sing.” If you haven't listened previously, you can listen to our first discussion back in Episode 108. This week Chanty returns to hear the story behind Grace Jones' life and career. Growing up in Jamaica wasn't easy for Grace. Raised by her extremely strict and religious relatives, it wasn't until she was a teenager and moved to America to be with her parents that she began to see a world of possibility. With her incredibly striking looks and a strong ambition to make a career for herself, it was natural that Grace would enter the world of modelling. It didn't take long though for Grace's passion for music and art to take center stage. After being signed by Island Records and finding a perfect collaborative partner in Jean-Paul Goude, Grace took the world by storm, mixing music, fashion and art into eye catching and shocking performative pieces. She would go on to release 9 albums, tour the world, and make her way onto movie screens in just the first decade of her career. Grace truly is a walking piece of art. 06 Apr 2019Ep. 103: Laurel Canyon00:56:41
On this week’s episode, Chanty takes you back to a time when eucalyptus trees hung in front yards, people went cabin to cabin playing each other their new music, and musicians would gather at the store to smoke on the wall, have a chat and see where the night took them. We’re going to LAUREL CANYON. Using Michael Walker’s book Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll’s Legendary Neighborhood, Chanty tells Lynx about this neighbourhood that inspired some of the biggest artists of our time. How can a place in time be a Muse? In a Muses first, we discuss how a time and place in rock and roll history could be the inspiration behind bands getting together (hello, Crosby, Stills and Nash), how relationships were formed and how this musical oasis turned darker as the generations passed. Today you’ll hear about Frank Zappa’s log cabin, Chris Hillman arriving at the Canyon, Josh Tillman mistaking it for Topanga Canyon and so much more. Have you ever wondered what Joni Mitchell’s house looked like back in the 60s? We’ve got you covered! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
12 Nov 2020EP 141: Interview with Miriam Linna01:14:32
We are so excited to share our interview with the magnificent Miriam Linna. Miriam has been making her mark on the music world since 1976. Together, her and Billy took their passion for music to the next level, first came their fanzine, Kicks, then came Norton Records, which focuses on amazing rockabilly & garage reissues from the 50s-70s. If that weren’t enough, Miriam’s love of literature led to the formation of Kick Books, their publishing company. Miriam talks with us about all this and Kick Books latest masterpiece, Mind Over Matter: The Myths and Mysteries of Detroits Fortune Records – written by Michael Hurtt and Billy Miller himself. In this week's episode, we chat with Lydia Criss, author of the book, Sealed with a Kiss. Lydia is the first wife of Peter Criss of KISS, ever heard of them? We had a great time chatting with Lydia about meeting Peter when he was Peter Criscuola, how their young love blossomed and being a part of the phenomenon that would become KISS. Lydia was there at the very beginning, supporting Peter while he pursued his dreams of rock and roll stardom.  Lydia tells us about how Peter created the cat man character which was inspired by their pet cat which they shared together. Lydia’s memoir is also like a wonderful scrapbook, documenting home photos of their life, relationship as well as the band’s evolving look. What was it like hanging around with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley? It's all here! We also discuss the part she played in the creation of the song “Beth”, what it was like to witness KISS become one of the biggest bands in the world, travel the world, rub shoulders with celebrities, lose herself in that relationship, and find herself once again. This is a story of young love, whirlwind romance, excess, rock and roll and a woman finding her own place in the world. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

19 Sep 2019Ep 114: Francoise Hardy01:20:28

Adored by both the public and fellow artists (Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan were big admirers!) and with a career spanning close to 60 years (both onstage and screen), Francoise's talent and beauty had lead her to Muse status. In it she discusses both her career and her personal relationships including her unique 52 year long relationship to fellow French Icon Jacques Dutronc. 22 Jan 2021EP 146: Uschi Obermaier & Patti Hansen00:42:21
New network and a new episode format! This week we each present one Muse, Uschi Obermaier and Patti Hansen. What legendary rockstar do they have in common? Keith Richards of course! When Uschi Obermaier first emerged on the scene all of Germany was in awe. Model, actress and overall wild child, she would become the poster child for the sexual revolution. Everybody wanted to meet her, from political activist Ranier Langhans, to Jimi Hendrix and of course The Rolling Stones, Uschi would inspire a generation to live free and enjoy life. "Don't dream your life", she once said, "Live your dreams." Discovered at the young age 16, Patti Hansen began a career as a model, working with A-List photographers for all the biggest magazines. It was on her 23rd birthday at the height of her career that she would meet Keith Richards but it wasn't until later that year, at Keith's 36th birthday party that the pair would officially connect. Forty-two years later and the pair are still going strong! Make sure to check out Lipstick and Vinyl for more amazing podcasts! Uschi: 00:04:35 Patti: 00:22:12 Learn more about your ad choices. 02 May 2019Ep. 105: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen01:16:22
“They were two lost souls who had found each other, Their relationship came out of their inability to find what they wanted in the outside world. They were on the same wavelength. They fit each others needs. They were dependant on each other. They cared for each other. To them, what they had together was genuine love.” - Deborah Spungen In this episode we shine a light on the iconic punk duo Sid and Nancy. A lot has been said about the pair over the years, and while researching for this episode we were shocked at how negative the media has painted Nancy who at heart was a troubled, very young woman. In this episode you'll hear all about their lives pre-punk, how they came together and how their equally self-destructive behaviour would be their downfall. Using both Deborah Spungen's book And I Don't Want to Live This Life: A Mothers Story of her Daughters Murder and Malcolm Butt's biography Sid Vicious: Rock n Roll Star, you'll hear a different side to Nancy and discover why Lynx dubbed her "The Yoko Ono of Punk". Make sure you pick up Deborah's book for an even more in depth look at Nancy! For 30% off your first Care/Of order go to www.TakeCareOf.com and use the Promo Code MUSES30! 09 Jan 2020Ep 122: Heart01:15:40
Let’s kick it out and begin 2020 with the story of Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. We’ll take you through over 4 decades of astonishing talent, hard work, love, loss and sisterhood. Chanty read the memoir "Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock and Roll" by Ann and Nancy Wilson and presents it to you today! Ann and Nancy Wilson, only 4 years apart in age, were always close. Moving from city to city and country to country with their family brought them even closer, singing and playing guitar together wherever they went. The sisters found security, and a home in listening to the radio and playing music. When Beatlemania hit, Ann and Nancy didn’t want to be a Beatles wife like the rest of their friends, they wanted to BE the Beatles.  Ann Wilson never had any doubt that she wanted to play music for a living, and things really started to take a turn in her career when she met the Magic Man and moved to Vancouver. Eventually, Nancy left college to join her big sister, and the rest is… rock and roll history! Listen to this week’s episode to hear about all of the Barracudas of the music industry, who else inspired Heart’s songs and lyrics and what being a pioneer in rock was like for two sisters from Seattle.  If you would like to support our show, you can head over to Patreon and donate $5 a month for bonus content https://www.patreon.com/musespodcast Learn more about your ad choices. 01 Nov 2019Ep 117: Interview with Kathy Iandoli01:25:28

She has also held editorial positions at top hip hop websites such as All Hip Hop and BET. 13 Jun 2019Ep 108: Interview with Patti Johnsen01:13:26
If Patti Johnsen's name sounds familiar it may be because you read her awesome chapter in Pamela Des Barres' book Lets Spend the Night Together. We knew right away we were talking to someone special, and cannot wait for you all to fall in love with Patti as we have! Patti recounts some awesome stories about meeting George Harrison, working at the legendary Rainbow Bar and Grill for nearly a decade, her fling with Billy Idol and her lasting friendship with Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. She also teaches us about rock n roll Holy Grails, her groupie round table and has some incredibly wise words for all us groupies out there, whether or not we have bedded a rockstar. “Just because you haven’t fucked a rockstar doesn’t mean you’re not a groupie. A guitar, a Les Paul comes off the assembly line, it hasn’t been played yet. Does it mean it’s not a guitar? Of course it is! And you put that in the hands of a rockstar, you just wait to hear that fucker sing! You are still a groupie because once you get in the hands of a rockstar baby, wait to hear you sing.” Make sure to follow Patti on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/pattijohnsen/ & Twitter at https://twitter.com/PattiJohnsen and check out the Groupie Round Table on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groupieroundtable For $20 off go to www.storyworth.com/muses when you subscribe! 28 May 2020EP 132: Sharon Osbourne01:16:20
While some may think it was Ozzy who introduced Sharon to the world of rock n roll truth is she was partying with the animals long before the Prince of Darkness entered the picture. Daughter of infamous music manager turned gangster Don Arden, Sharon entered the family business as a teen and soon became her fathers right hand man helping to manage bands such as ELO and Black Sabbath. When Sabbath fired frontman Ozzy Osbourne for his drug and alcohol addiction, Sharon stood by his side and took over his management, helping to build one of the most successful solo careers of all-time while also falling deeply in love. While they're love affair has stood the test of time it was certainly not always smooth sailing. Years of addiction and extremely violent behaviour marred their private life, but the pair always managed to pull through the worst of it and will be celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary this summer. Whether you love them or hate them one thing is for sure, Sharon and Ozzy are pure rock n roll. Make sure to purchase your copy of Sharon Osbourne's memoir Extreme where ever books are sold. 19 Nov 2020EP 142: Rosa Lee Brooks and Gregg Wright01:17:31
Today we’ve come together for a very special occasion, and that’s to have a conversation with Rosa Lee Brooks and Gregg Wright to recognize what would have been Jimi Hendrix's 78th Birthday. On November 27th, Kiss The Sky will be playing an upcoming live-stream to honour Jimi Hendrix's birthday that will air on Facebook and other platforms. Rosa Lee Brooks locked eyes with Jimi Hendrix on New Years in 1963 and it was love at first sight. Cosmically connected, the two went on to write and record My Diary and Utee together forming both a romantic and musical partnership. Rosa began singing at the age of two and thankfully, hasn’t stopped. Mentored by Etta James, she brought everything full circle later on when she’d invite musicians into her home and inspire them.  We were so happy to have Gregg Wright join us in the studio for this conversation and some music. He really is King of the Rockin' Blues, and we can’t wait for his new album, Big Dawg Barkin, to be released early in 2021. We are so grateful to Rosa and Gregg for this conversation. You can find Rosa on facebook and at rosaleebrooks.com Find Gregg online, greggwright.com and that’s Gregg with two G’s. Don’t forget to follow Jimy Bleu and Kiss the Sky and tune in on November 27th to see the band perform live on stream, in all their Jimi Hendrix glory. Enjoy the show!  On Friday November 27th from 7pm to 8:30pm Eastern Standard Time, Kiss The Sky presents a live stream of their annual Jimi Hendrix Birthday Bash direct from the historic Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY. 10 Mar 2022Ep 179: Chan Parker00:55:16
This week we dive into the jazz era and give you the life story of Chan Parker. Since the day she was born Chan Parker always had a deep passion for music. With parents involved in the nightclub scene, Chan spent her early years seeing legends such as Rosetta Tharpe, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington perform at all the hot New York clubs. By the time she was 20 she was very well known and admired in the Jazz/Swing scene, and was lovingly dubbed "The Queen of Swing Street". While Chan had many musical admirers over the years it was saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker, who first captured her heart. Being an interracial couple in the 1940's wasn't easy and neither was life with Charlie. Bird suffered from mental illness which was exacerbated by his substance abuse issues. Chan did all she could for Charlie before his passing at age 34. Following Charlie Chan fell for yet another saxophonist, Phil Woods, who she would go on to marry. Listen to hear Chans story. This week the Muses discuss the life and career of Blondie front-woman Debbie Harry. Debbie Harry had no idea what NYC had in store for her when she moved in the late 60's, but she certainly had big dreams. Working at Max's Kansas City she would wait on musicians she admired, while working hard to make her own musical goals come true. It wasn't a quick rise to fame, but when Debbie met Chris Stein and the pair formed Blondie, it was clear that there was something special there, both musically and personally. As Blondie's fame grew, Debbie's growth as an artist skyrocketed. She began a side career as an actress, put out her own solo albums and became one of the most recognizable punk rock icons. 14 Jul 2022Ep 182: Jordan00:58:29
This week were back to share the story of punk icon Jordan. Born Pamela Rooke, Jordan was always an original. Combining her passion for dance, music and fashion led her to Kings Road where she got a job working with Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren at their iconic store SEX. It was there she sparked inspiration into everyone who entered, becoming muse to musicians, filmmakers and fashion designers alike. From starring in films such as Jubilee, to making onstage appearances with the Sex Pistols and Adam Ant, Jordan was at the epicentre of it all. Filmmaker Derek Jarman said it best... "As far as I was concerned Jordan was original. everyone else in the fashion side follows on from her. Even Vivienne and the shop because with Jordan the shop wouldn't have worked. She was the original Sex Pistol. everyone else came in and saw Jordan dressed up and the attitude and it took off from there. She was the godfather, godmother, if you like. She was the purest example of them all" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

13 Jun 2018EP 76: Astrid Kirchherr and Stuart Sutcliffe01:05:51
When Astrid Kirchherr and her friend Klaus Voormann came across The Beatles playing deep within Hamburgs red light district they were gobsmacked – rock n roll simply did not exist in Germany in 1960. Soon they began attending shows every night and Astrid, a gifted photographer, got the idea to shoot the band. With Klaus’ help translating, soon The Beatles were their fast friends and subjects of Astrid’s latest photo sessions- their first official publicity photos. While she connected with all of them, none so much as as the mysterious heartthrob of the group, Stuart Sutcliffe. Wait a minute! There’s no Stuart in The Beatles! Well, in their inception there was, and in no time they were inseparable. Like Astrid, Stuart’s talents lie in his art and together their work flourished. Astrid was his muse, but also highly influential in The Beatles early career. In this episode you’ll hear both Stuart and Astrid’s story, along with The Beatles pre-world domination. 18 Jul 2018EP 81: Cynthia Lennon01:45:04
When Cynthia first met John Lennon he was an 18 year old teddy boy more interested in being class clown and playing his guitar then focusing on school work. Both students at the Liverpool College of Art, Cynthia soon found herself looking forward to seeing him, laughing at John’s sharp wit and swooning when he’d play a tune or two after classes. It wasn’t long before they became a couple, but right from the start Cynthia realized life with John would never be simple. “He wanted me with him for as much of the time as possible which meant that very early in our relationship I had to choose between him and my other needs and responsibilities.” Cynthia chose to put John first even with all that meant. Within 5 years they would marry, Julian would be born and Beatlemania would become a worldwide phenomenon. While fame and fortune opened many doors it also came with a significant price. Fans of The Beatles were now camping outside their home, the press followed them everywhere they went and the loneliness of having John away most of the year was difficult for Cynthia. Even when they were together, attending swanky events and partying with all the hottest celebrities Cynthia could never shake the feeling that she didn’t belong. When John discovered psychedelic drugs, Cynthia began to feel an even greater distance growing between them. Cynthia also had increasing suspicions about John’s fidelity, especially after catching him lying about his relationship with an artist named Yoko Ono. John would continually deny he had any sort of contact with her, so you can imagine Cynthia’s shock upon returning home one day to find them lounging in bathrobes together. “I could feel a wall around them that I could not penetrate. In my worst nightmares about Yoko I had not imagined anything like this. Their intimacy had been so powerful I had felt like a stranger in my own house.” Tune in to hear Cynthia’s story and make sure to check out her memoir, John. 15 Aug 2018EP 84: Grace Slick01:13:25
Grace Slick always knew she wasn’t meant for a more “conventional” lifestyle, but it wasn’t until she began seeing live music and started her own band that she finally felt she’d found her destiny. When her bandmates in The Great Society decided to find their own path, Grace was asked to join her friends in the already popular Jefferson Airplane (& later Jefferson Starship). Grace was well known for her outspoken and badass ways onstage, and audiences loved them. Their music filled the airwaves from the ’60’s – ’80’s (and then some!) and their presence at 3 of the biggest and most notorious music festivals (Monterey International Pop Festival, Woodstock and Altamont) solidified their place in music history. It was a wild ride and Grace embraced all that the 60’s has come to be known for, free love (wait until you hear her Jim Morrison story!), drugs and a whole lotta rock n roll! 12 Sep 2018EP 87: Erin Everly, Stephanie Seymour & The Rocket Queen01:12:57
Axl Rose and his band Guns N' Roses may have been a well known name on Sunset Strip but the band had yet to cut a full length record when he met model Erin Everly. The two became inseparable however right from the start friends could see it wasn’t the healthiest relationship. Their time together would inspire many of Guns n Roses most well known songs, but the volatile nature of their relationship would overcome any good that was there. After their split Axl would meet another model, Stephanie Seymour and repeat past behaviours. Stephanie would also serve as a muse, starring in two of GNR’s most famous videos, “November Rain” and “Don’t Cry”, but their time together would be short lived and lead to an onslaught on court battles for Rose. Then there’s the Rocket Queen(s). Barbie Von Grief was a wild child who would inspire the entire band early in their career. Her continual support as a friend would encourage them to chase their dreams no matter how tough times got. She co-wrote a song that would later only be dedicated to her – Rocket Queen- but it was another woman, Adriana Smith, who would be featured in the song in quite a unique way. Listen to learn more!
