11 Oct 2023A Safe Place to Let Go01:00:34

“I feel so clearly called to death and birth work in this primal way of, like, this is what I'm here for now. All of the logistics of capitalism have not been mastered and would love to put the onus of mastery to someone else to just make it possible for me to do this. Because this feels so like even the gentle way that I'm sometimes feeling guided to death work in this place. I love old people and I love talking to people about their reproductive organs and how all of these things go together. And it just seems like only in weird deathy spaces or weird birthworky spaces do I feel at home.”

A student of life, Avé is a writer, full-spectrum doula, public scholar, and wellness guide. Inspired by traditional healing and aerial perspective, the goal is guiding life with abundance towards death in solace. Oriented towards justice, Avé Lanett chooses transformation. With over three decades of multidisciplinary yoga practice, they have committed their life to sharing wellness. Most commonly known for their political, environmental, and social justice work in the LGBTQ community, their methods are rooted in health through Black Liberation. From birthwork to end-of-life support, Avé enjoys serving as a witness of becoming.

In this podcast episode, Avé shares insights on how they experienced their mother's death, their journey with grief, and the truth that experiencing grief requires the privilege of space and safety.

06 Mar 2024Walking through the Death Portal01:01:52

In this MUM episode, life coach Yvonne Chung shares about her experience with major decision-making alongside uncertainty and fear, the impact of living beyond complacency, and waking up through the death portal.

About Yvonne Chung:

Yvonne is a Korean-American child of immigrants whose work lies at the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern science--the research and the woo. She is a certified coach, self-love mentor, Human Design guide, and dream architect, here to help as many people as she can live fearlessly so they can die without regrets.

Her life has been a series of deaths and rebirths that ultimately led her deeper and deeper into her life's purpose.

In 2017, she quit her corporate job and abandoned the identity and life she was told to have in order to travel the world and discover her own path of purpose and meaning. In 2019, she answered the call of her Soul's Work and began her journey as a coach and guide. In 2021, at 32 years old, she came face to face with her own mortality, catapulting her deeper into her life's purpose.

And in 2023, she left a 7-year relationship and engagement, uprooted her life, and set out on a new life path in Mexico. Over the course of her life, she has had to make choices to leave one life in order to step into another. Life has taught her how to trust the death process and has shown her how deaths (in their many forms) can be initiations and portals toward a more expanded life. Now, her mission is to help as many people discover what it means to really live so they can get to their deathbeds with as few regrets as possible.

04 Oct 2023A Tea Stronger Than Death01:13:35

“This particular residency was a thematic one, and the theme was titled Meeting for Teas. So it drew artists curators and thinkers from all over. We all had this time and space to sit with Tea independently, sit with Tea communally, and talk about tea in all the different ways, including decolonizing as an aspect of tea and tea culture. And I couldn't stop crying the first two weeks when I was there, and I didn't even really know what I was crying about. To a certain degree, I kind of did, because the day that I received news that I've been accepted was the same day my Nai Nai passed away.”

Mimi Young, née Lin, is a Taiwanese Canadian animist spirit medium, Tea devotée, writer, and the founder of Ceremonie. Mimi’s work lies at the intersection of animacy and re-animation, intuition and creativity, using symbolic interpretation and ancient Chinese wisdom practices to commune with the Unseen and invite new possibilities during times of uncertainty and change.

In this podcast episode, Mimi shares excerpts from her limited edition artist's book, A Tea Stronger Than Death: Poems of Hurt and Healing While On Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain.

“Created during the 5-week thematic residency, Meeting For Teas, held at the Banff Centre for Arts + Creativity, located on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain, this collection of poems and illustrations of grey-scaled cyanotypes (sun prints) is both prayer and journey through light, shadow, and verse, giving honour to the painful and healing moments of locating oneself over and over again, with Tea, the departed, and the more-than-human.”

She also has an upcoming sliding scale 6-week transformational writing series titled UGLY WORDS.

25 Oct 2023Sacred Transformation01:03:48

“What I've learned through this work is that I can allow the emotion, the energy, to be in motion. And when I make space for that, it goes away. Even grief. Grief can take longer. There's no time frame here, but it is what it is. But if I can soften and allow that wave to come over me and I give space for it to show up, to reach the peak of the experience and to discharge, I can function much better in the world because I'm not spending so much energy trying not to feel the emotion or not to feel the feeling.”

Kimberly is the visionary Founder and CEO behind Somagetics, a trailblazing company dedicated to enlightening individuals about the profound impact of trauma and providing accessible tools for healing.

With an illustrious career spanning over three decades, Kimberly has worn many hats, including that of a functional nutrition practitioner, a skilled bodyworker, and a compassionate home birth midwife. Through her extensive experience with thousands of clients, she made a pivotal revelation: unaddressed trauma, held within the body, often lies at the core of various health challenges. This epiphany led to a transformation in her approach.

Kimberly is passionate about sacred transformation. In this conversation, she shares her work with terminally ill cancer patients in their dying process and birth midwifery early in her career. These experiences led her to co-create Somagetics, “a trauma-informed, body-based energetic technique that transforms defensive patterns and enables physical and emotional healing.”

In this episode, Kimberly shares, “What excites me now is the possibility of sacred transformations that can happen between birth and death. Currently, my focus is supporting people to transform old, limiting defensive trauma patterns so they can access their true divine essence. We can learn to identify the trauma patterns but identify with our eternal essential self. And that is the place where we create the life of our dreams.”

22 Aug 2023Welcome to Mum: Trailer00:01:44

Death is a vital part of life. It marks the end of every day and season. It’s present in every exhale and goodbye. It guides you through all your life transitions.

Death initiates you into change – the only constant in life. Without it, there would be no growth, no new chapters, no expansion, no transformation.

Each of us are the heroes in our own journeys. We face our fears as we walk into these death portals, shedding old skins, and re-emerge anew. We do this many times in a lifetime. Our stories hold deep wisdom and offer healing.

I’m Ellen Wong – I’m a storyteller and entheogenic death companion. I walk daily with brave souls through death and rebirth.

I invite you to enter this portal of discovery with me. And together, let’s break our fearful silence and uplift our stories of death and grief , so that we can all be inspired to live our lives, LOUD.

Welcome to Mum.

31 Aug 2023Death's Sisters01:13:42

"If we can be with aging, we can also be with death. Right. Like, they go hand in hand. I feel like aging and death are sisters. They're sisters. One moves slow and one moves fast, but they walk on the same path."

In this episode, Xochitl Kusikuy Ashe – a 5th generation Peruvian medicine woman and Ellen's mentor – shares about her relationship with death and how it has been a teacher in her life.

Xochitl describes death as having sisters, which symbolize different aspects or ways in which death can occur. These sisters are metaphorical representations that help us understand death from various perspectives – the Sister of Aging, Sister of Illness, the Sister of Accidents, the Sister of Evil, the Sister of Suicide.

And just as there are sisters of Death, so are there sisters of Life. These sisters are associated with support and embrace for death. They may represent the transformative power of death and the growth that can arise from experiencing loss.

About Xochitl

Xochitl Kusikuy Ashe has been a teacher and guide in one-and-one mentorships, workshops, and ceremonies both in the U.S and internationally for the last 27 years. At 16 years old she became the first female of five generations of men to be initiated into the healing traditions of her Peruvian ancestral lineage. She is a Medicine Woman in the Peruvian Andean tradition and has worked with sacred plant medicines since the time of her initiation.  For the past 23 years she apprenticed under her Godfather, a Mazatec Medicine Man of the ancient tradition of healing with the "Nti-si tho" "Santitos" or Psilocybin mushrooms.

She is a professionally trained herbalist, IFS Therapy Practitioner (Internal Family Systems) and specializes in the ceremonial use of Cacao and Psilocybin Mushrooms. In her practice, Xochitl focuses on the healing of generational trauma and the ways in which that trauma impairs our ability to thrive, create wealth, and have a positive impact on the world.

Founder of Magical Medicine Journeys, an Indigenous women owned retreat company, that offers legal Mazatec Psilocybin Mushroom Retreats in Mexico. Xochitl’s mission is to honor the traditional indigenous knowledge and ceremony of sacred plant medicine and provide the most authentic and powerful life changing experiences.

She is faculty at Esalen Institute, The Microdosing Institute and the Shift Network.

18 Oct 2023The Grace of Surrender01:04:46

“I think part of just the way we're raised or our society is like, oh, well, at least we tried everything we could. I think it's that old adage of, well, we tried everything. Well, sometimes it's not about that. It's not about trying all the medications till you've basically just worn your body out. It's about maybe giving yourself the last few months to just kind of enjoy your life. Where you can enjoy your food, your friends, go to the beach, go see a show. Isn't that how you'd want to remember living?”

Judy Dubko is a Physician Assistant in Hematology/Oncology.

In this podcast episode, Judy shares about her experience working in hematology/oncology and facing death from a medical perspective. She raises the important point that sometimes letting go is a more graceful and compassionate choice than exhausting every treatment option to extend life, particularly when it comes to the cost of quality of life.

27 Sep 2023Grieving “Normal”01:16:12

“As someone even on the journey, and I know there are many people who may hear this transmission who really feel like this aligns with them, but there's a piece that I have around knowing Jaxon. His essence, his frequency, and his beautiful soul are always present there, no matter what his physical experience is going to be. And that I know, whatever direction we go, whatever decision my sister and my brother-in-law make about what's best for their families is the right path. And we're on Jaxon's path.”

Samantha Williams (she/her) is a Reiki Master and Certified Channel with a profound calling to provide companionship and advocacy to both special needs children and their families, inspired by her personal journey with her nephew. As a compassionate witness and guide, she integrates energy healing and spiritual mentorship–supported by rituals for physical, emotional, and spiritual self-care–to nurture both the individuals and the family unit and foster compassionate communication through a network of support that creates space to celebrate each child’s unique gifts and journey.

In this podcast episode, Sam shares about her family’s grief surrounding her three-year-old nephew Jaxon’s impending hemispherectomy and the journey she has been on while supporting her sister Morgan and brother-in-law Ben through Jaxon’s developmental challenges.

This was a heartfelt and timely conversation centered around compassionate support while navigating complex emotions and decisions as a family. And Sam shares an important key piece – that it truly takes a constellation of care to be able to support everyone involved and to honor the needs and the breaking points of each individual.

06 Sep 2023An Uninhibited Life00:59:12

"What does it mean to live uninhibited, especially knowing that your time is coming to an end? I held space for people who are my own age. I held space for people who were older than me. Numerous diagnosis also like Alzheimer's and dementia. And it really made me slow down and learn to be present. I would show up in these spaces. I'd be going into people's homes, I'd be going into skilled nursing facilities. And each experience was like its own container. And again, death is part of that container."

Stacey Schultz (they/she) is a board certified massage therapist and Rosen Method Bodyworker who has had experiences working with people at their end of life in hospice. And through her life journey, she has come to be an outspoken advocate for those who have experienced religious/spiritual harm.

In this conversation, we discuss the challenges of having religious upbringings, the process of questioning our beliefs, and healing from religious trauma. Stacey shares about her journey in leaving the religious community and discovering who she really is, and how that journey is now woven into her healing practice.

31 Aug 2023Rest in Peace Now01:08:04

"We hear celebration of life in reference to funerals when it comes to people's death. And I don't think we should wait until someone dies to celebrate their life. We should learn to celebrate now ourselves, the people we love. Also, why do I have to wait to die to rest in peace?"

Lily Truong is an existential Earthling existing as a first-generation Vietnamese-American queer femme, a squishy human with a squiggly brain psychotherapist, healing arts practitioner, coconut ninja, lover of life, companion of death, dot connector, community builder, rebel anarchist, cool rich auntie, and proud cat mum.

Lily's dad died when she was two. Her partner was murdered in 2020. And her mother died in 2021 on Mother's Day.

Lily has been walking with death her whole life. In this episode, Lily shares about her personal experience with grief while supporting her mother through her death journey, and how this experience has changed her perspective on life. She also talks about how her mother's unexpressed grief affected her understanding of death as a child.

Lily and Ellen discuss the importance of celebrating life now rather than waiting for death, as well as prioritizing rest and peace in everyday life. And they reflect on the transformative nature of grief and the need its expression.

About Lily Truong

Lily Truong is a pre-licensed therapist working in community mental health and private practice, whose ultimate intention is to share the transformative possibilities and benefits of counseling and communal care with those in search of healing. She operates through a social justice lens with the perspective of a first-generation Vietnamese-American queer femme weaving between the intersections of Eastern philosophies of mindfulness and contemporary depth-oriented theories in clinical practice. 21 Feb 2024Becoming a Skilled Griever01:11:16

In this MUM episode, medicine person Ekua Adisa shares about the conscious practice of skilled grieving and the 7 steps in creating a solo grief ritual (get ready to jot down notes!) that allows time and space for the body beyond verbal expression. Both Ellen and Ekua also discuss the non-linear, spontaneous experiences of grief in the day-to-day.

More on Ekua Adisa:

Ekua Adisa is a gender fluid medicine person at the intersection of Black Southern traditions and indigenous African practices that center ancestor veneration, conjure, earth magic, channeling, plant medicine, ritual, and community care. Ekua is also deeply influenced and inspired by the teachings of Native people indigenous to so-called North America, as well as various Buddhist lineages. As an intuitive medium, an energy worker, and a ritualist, Ekua’s pleasure-purpose work is inviting and supporting collective and individual grief work with ritual somatic practices, supporting people to connect with their ancestors for guidance, making and sharing plant medicine, and supporting the dead to transition with grace, elevation, and dignity. As a death care worker, they are excited to deepen into the work of supporting people to confront impermanence and prepare for their own eventual end spiritually and logistically. Ekua has twenty years of experience hosting and facilitating groups primarily in liberation movement spaces, and fifteen years experience as a healing practitioner practicing with various modalities.

13 Sep 2023Two Spirit00:54:09

"I think it's important as an elder queer person and I wear that very proudly, that I do think our stories are important because I didn't come from a place that where we had these tools. So as an elder queer person, it's also not too f*****g late for me to honor it now, right? And to go living this next however long on this plane as my authentic self, including name. And to just do that because I understand the healing frequencies that it sends back. That sends healing back to those that couldn't. And it models for generations to come."

TanyaMarck Oviedo (they/them) is a two spirit, nonbinary, queer, native indigenous person of color and has been in recovery since 1989. They are the founder of Vamonos, a care and harm reduction practice that specializes in working with and supporting: people at the margin, 2SLGBTQ+, substance overuse/misuse, facilitator abuse, psychedelics in recovery, integration support + safety, and breathwork + movement.

TanyaMarck shares their journey of self-discovery and acceptance as a two-spirit individual. They reflect on their childhood experiences, including a summer romance at the age of ten, and how it shaped their understanding of love and identity.

They also explore the significance of an intimate ceremony and the merging of their two spirits, ultimately embracing their whole self and sharing their story to inspire compassion and understanding.

20 Sep 2023Experiencing Death as a Deathworker01:00:43

“Grief can come in all forms of different emotions and expressions. And so we express it in the community, right? You can do it by yourself, but I think it's cool to do it with a friend or in the community because then you witness each other. And that's the ancestral way we're supposed to grieve together and not get freaked out about me screaming and losing my… if you're weeping and screaming, people are coming like, oh, get your s**t together.”

Gris Alves is a Mindfulness Teacher, Thanatologist, Integrated Recovery and Healing Guide, Earth Based Ceremonialist and Trauma-Informed 500HR RYT Yoga Teacher; Host of The Tales of Recovery bi-lingual podcast, and currently training in Gabor Mate's Compassionate Inquiry Therapy Process. She has been leading humans in spiritual, health, and addiction recovery programs for over 27 years. Helping others process trauma, embody and ritualize grief, deconstruct and release limiting beliefs that stem from the social conditioning and programming that hinder our integrated well-being.

In this episode, Gris shares her personal journey in walking with her mother through the end of her life. Even as someone who had formally studied death and grief, she shares that the experience of companioning her mother through this portal was still challenging and also heartbreakingly beautiful.

15 Nov 2023Making Space for Grief01:16:37

“Suddenly I just didn't know who I was without that anymore. It was a real unmooring. But I think that I felt completely untethered to this world. I had nothing holding me here anymore, and that was really weird. I did not expect that. I think I expected to be sad about my dad being gone, but I don't think I expected—I literally do not know who I am anymore, and I don't know what my attachment is to life because I've lost so much of my context that I didn't even know was that big of my context.”

Karen Shih is a fellow first-generation Taiwanese American death doula (in the making), a triple Gemini, and a deeply devoted dog auntie.

In this episode, Karen shares about the death of her father, which led to her stepping out of her career to honor her grief.

Karen shares, “After my dad died unexpectedly in October of 2015, I completely hit pause on my life (which is a huge privilege on a variety on levels that I think most people can't do or maybe wouldn't even choose to do if they could). I quit my job, watched a lot of Grey's Anatomy, traveled to Taiwan, and eventually left New York and my life there behind. It felt like I stripped my life and identity down to nothing and had to start from scratch. The next 7+ years felt like a slow incubation as I navigated my inner jungle and surfaced a path and myself choice by choice.”

07 Feb 2024Liberation through Death + Grief – w/ Ellen Wong00:20:02

“The presence of grief means that we need space, and our need for space means we need to honor our rest. We need to honor these natural cycles. And that is a key piece of our personal liberation effort.”

Welcome back to Season Two of MUM. We ended Season One early in response to the genocide occurring in Gaza.

As we return for this second season, MUM creator and host Ellen Wong reflects on the relationship between personal and collective liberation.

If liberation is being in right relationship with all that is and honoring the natural cycles that govern our bodies and world, then celebrating death and embracing grief must be part of our liberation efforts.

How are you focusing your energy and gifts in service of our collective liberation?

Ellen’s note – the documentary she mentions in the episode is called “Trees and Other Entanglements” and the story she tells is of Carolyn Finney, Ph.D., author and environmentalist.

10 Apr 2024Talismans for Grief01:08:56

In this MUM episode, deathworker Hope De La Mora shares the profound impact of the deaths in Hope's life starting at a young age, the deep grief experienced when we lose our animal soul companions, and how talismans can keep the energy of our loved ones close with us.

Content Warning: We discuss suicidality which may be triggering for some individuals. Please exercise conscious discernment when listening.

About Hope De La Mora:

Hope De La Mora (founder of Hope Ascendant) is a Metaphysical Minister, Ritualist, Death Liberationist, Talisman Maker, and Quantum Healer deploying self-channeled healing and attunement modalities.

Hope grew up in a dynamic way where multiple inputs and cultures informed Hope’s growth and abilities (from both an epigenetic and experiential perspective). This ultimately led Hope to the study of cultural anthropology and history, which continues to inform Hope’s work for both the living and the dying.

Hope and death became friends at a very early age through the untimely (and in some cases intentional) deaths of friends and close family. Between 2010 and 2013, Hope would become the caregiver and death doula for both of Hope’s Grandparents who were like parents to Hope and the primary force cultivating Hope’s development.

However, it was not until the 2020’s that Hope would begin listening to the whispers of this calling to deathwork, finally becoming formally trained through INELDA in 2023, just as Hope was companioning Edward, Hope’s 19 year old non-human guardian + familiar along his walk to the death portal.

Hope’s heartwork is in service to both the living and the dying ~ for the living, the subtle art of unlocking one’s innate metaphysical wisdom + stepping onto one’s path of gnosis, and for the dying, the rituals and sacred memorial objects that provide comfort to the living and a sacred space for the dying. Hope’s service is not just limited to humans, either.

Finally, Hope has a deep calling to expand awareness + advocacy for death and dying praxis in vulnerable populations, such as the incarcerated and the undomiciled, as well as begin conversations on how we may better companion and serve neurodivergent individuals in the process of death, dying, and grief.

29 May 2024Grieving Animal Companions01:03:40

In this MUM episode, Spiritual Medium Jaime Breeze shares how relationships with pets transcend physical life and can continue through reincarnation. Jaime sheds light on how she communicates with animals on the other side, providing comfort to those who are grieving their animal companions, and emphasized the importance of acknowledging grief, encouraging individuals to honor their feelings and the memory of their pets through rituals and journaling.

About Jaime Breeze:

Born with an inner sense of ‘knowing’, Jaime was aware of the Spirit World from a very young age. At 3 years old, she began speaking openly about her past lives and about ‘others’ around her that nobody else could see. By the age of 16, Jaime had begun working with Spiritual Healers that taught her how to develop her natural gifts, harness her insights, and learn different healing modalities. Over the years, Jaime’s fascination with Heaven, reincarnation, and with those who have crossed over, along with her training, has allowed her skills to flourish.

In early 2016 however, Jaime suffered a great loss and battled with her first true experience of grief. After seeking guidance from grief counsellors and therapists, Jaime began to understand that navigating her grief would truly test her in ways she had never been tested before. There were no books to read, exercises to complete or steps to follow in order to help make the pain go away. Even the personal knowledge of life after death still did not bring her the healing or peace she so desperately needed.

Months later while visiting with a friend, an image of a young man who we will call “Luke” appeared out of nowhere in front of her. Luke psychically communicated to Jaime who he was, how he passed and that he needed to deliver a message to his sister who was still on earth. Jaime couldn’t deny what was happening so she quickly started telling her friend all about it. Her friend listened intently to what Jaime was relaying from this Spirit. To Jaime’s surprise, her friend knew exactly who Luke was and was actually friends with Luke’s sister who lived on the other side of the country! Jaime’s friend quickly delivered this sacred message to Luke’s sister whom had longed for some sign from her brother since the day he had passed. Reassured by his efforts to contact her, she now knew that although his physical form had moved on, he would always be there for her in spirit.

Until this point in her life, Jaime had never experienced such a strong connection to a spirit. The energy Luke showed her, the love he had for his sister, and his concern for her was unfathomable. Not only did Luke find a portal of sorts to connect with his sister, he also gave Jaime back her hope and excitement for life again. It was during that moment that other spirits began appearing and Jaime realized she was to be a Spiritual Medium on a professional level. She knew that the time had come to embrace her gift and help both herself and others to communicate with those who had passed. Mediumship brought back a zest for life for Jaime. She now knew she needed to experience and understand what ultimate grief was before the doors to the other side could fully open. She understood now that her past experiences of lost love combined with her true understanding of grief and all its many intricacies gave her the life the purpose, she had long desired. Her intention, her goal, was now clear. Through the deliverance of messages and signs from those departed, she would use her skills to help people feel joy and purpose in their lives again and bring an element of peace and comfort to those souls left on earth to grieve.

About the book “Bloodlines”: Bloodlines is an epic and intimate dive into the israeli apartheid regime from the perspective of an ex-israeli/ex-zionist soldier. Born into a sephardic and ashkenazi lineage of in/famous war heroes and pillars for the state of israel, meital yaniv traces their paternal family narrative from surviving the Holocaust of the second world war to migrating to Palestine and their subsequent indoctrination as zionist colonizers and defenders of the state of israel. yaniv directs our attention to the cycles of history and how genocide not only repeats but grows monstrously in the crevices of state belonging. Through a bold and radical poetics that unsettles language and definition, they foreground vulnerability while traversing the nuance of voice and inner forms of address. yaniv unravels the coordinates of belonging to write in the fissures of israeli identity. bloodlines is an invitation to contemporary israelis to unstitch the military uniform from their bodies and to reckon with their atrocities against generations of Palestinian lives and livelihoods. It is also a demand that the ongoing catastrophes in Palestine end now. With uncompromising courage and in lucid manifestation, yaniv urges israelis to join them in drowning in the wounds of their ancestors as well as the wounds they've inflicted, and in so doing, bring the state of israel and israeli identity to "a loving and caring death.”

The prayer of bloodlines is to bring the israeli identity and state to a loving and caring death.
